RB's Japanese racer on his love of saunas, good coffee and - well, food, of course

Fashion

I like fashion. I like to choose my outfit according to my mood or where I'm going. And I like to show my colours, if you like. In short, it feels good to look good.

Food

There's no particular cuisine I like, but for me a good meal is a kind of tool to reduce stress and feel happier. It doesn't matter what kind of food it is - if it's good, I enjoy it, whether it's tacos or sushi. I really like pasta. When I'm in Italy that's what I usually eat. But it's important for me, wherever we go, to find a good restaurant so I can enjoy the food. Because in a way, as strange as it may sound, it gives me the same feeling as driving a Formula 1 car. When I drive, I just concentrate on that. It's not that I don't think - of course I do, especially during the race - but when it comes to driving, it's more about the senses than thoughts. When I'm driving I don't think about anything else. And it's almost the same with food. You just enjoy the taste and flavour - and I really like that!

Nature

We travel a lot and are surrounded by electronics and computers, Laptops, telemetry, data is our world - and sometimes it's just too much. So I like to get away from it all, to go hiking, for example, or just get out into nature and experience a different environment to Formula 1.

Jason Statham

Definitely my favourite actor, especially after meeting him in Abu Dhabi last year. I've always liked his films and Transporter is my favourite - but sometimes when you meet your hero and get to know the person better, you can be disappointed, can't you? It wasn't like that with Jason. He is such a great guy, really nice, talkative, very respectful and really, really strong! He's got everything you need. He's strong, he looks cool, he's bald. I might go bald in the future to look more like him...

Singing

I'm not the one who sings in the shower, but I do sing in the car. I just feel like it, to feel the rhythm, to have fun. And when I'm singing, I feel like a real singer.

Saunas

It's something I like to use to reset. 20 minutes in the sauna, then a cold shower and lying down - at that moment I feel like I'm in space. And it is an incredible feeling. It feels like your body is resetting itself. It feels like all the stress I have, it just comes out with the sweat, so after the sauna I feel fresh. Like a brand new me. It's funny, I didn't really like it before, but my friends kept telling me how great it was. So one day I just decided to give it another try and finally understood what they were talking about. Now it's one of my favourite things to do: just go to the sauna and relax.

Coffee

I have a good coffee machine at home. I like to grind coffee beans in the morning and make myself a good cup of coffee. Good coffee makes my day.

Wine

I don't drink alcohol very often, to be honest. And I'm not a guy who knows a lot about wine, about different types and varieties of wine. I'm not an expert, if you like. But it's nice to have a glass of wine with good food. It helps you enjoy it even more

Apex Legends

I used to play a lot more when I moved to Europe from Japan - and Apex Legends was my favourite game. I don't play as much now, but during my junior career it was a way to keep in touch with my friends in Japan because we were so far apart. Of course you can call and chat, but doing something together, playing and talking at the same time, is a lot more fun.

Football

I sometimes play football with the mechanics, engineers and other guys from the team in Faenza. And I love it. Because first of all I like the game itself, but then it's also good to hang out with the guys from the team - especially considering that it's usually the guys who don't go to races and stay at the factory, so it's also a good opportunity to bond with them.

When Joe comes in the door after work, George isn’t immediately visible on the couch playing video games, and Joe can’t hear the shower running, either.

“I’m home,” he ventures, wondering if maybe George stayed late at work and hasn’t had a chance to drop him a text.

“In here,” George replies, almost inaudible, from the general direction of the bedroom. Joe immediately has a sneaking suspicion of what kind of day it is, but he knows better than to make a big deal out of it. He is equipped for this, now, in the same way George is equipped for the days when he wants to throw his prosthetic into the fucking sea.

“I’m making coffee,” he says, dropping his work bag inside the hall closet. “You want in?”

George’s voice remains the same volume. “Yeah.”

“Whiskey in it?”

“…yeah.”

Joe heads to the kitchen and turns on the coffee maker, puttering around the kitchen until it’s ready. He is careful as he crosses the living room with the steaming mug filled right to the brim, and when he gains the bedroom, he finds George exactly where he expected, flopped on the bed, face down.

“You alright?” he asks, setting the cup of coffee down on the night stand.

“I’m fine,” George says, his voice muffled by the pillow.

“Yeah, you seem fine.” Joe sits down on the edge of the bed. “Do I gotta hit someone?”

“My hero,” George mutters. He turns his face to the side so that he can see Joe, but otherwise doesn’t move. “No. I’m just tired.”

Joe, who spends a lot of days just tired of being in his body, too, since the accident, doesn’t have to ask for clarification.

“You want to come kick my ass at Apex Legends?” he asks.

“Tempting,” George says. “Exactly how much whiskey did you put in that coffee? I keep getting wafts of it.” He pushes himself up onto his elbows so that he can eye the mug that Joe set down.

As always, Joe's presence seems to draw him back toward some semblance of cheerfulness, and that clenches tightly around Joe's heart in a way he can't quite articulate.

“Never bring a knife to a gun fight,” he says lightly.

It almost drags a grin out of George, who reaches for the mug and takes a long pull. Once he’s swallowed, he glances down at it again and his lips twitch, a not bad in not so many words. “Maybe the perfect amount of whiskey, actually.”

“Should’ve been a bartender.” I pour based on how your voice sounds when I walk in the door, he doesn’t say. He taps George’s hip. “Move over.”

George stows the coffee safely on the night stand and rolls over onto his back, making room for Joe next to him. The two of them look up at the ceiling together for a moment, Joe folding up George’s hand tightly in his, shoulders and hips and thighs touching, warm and reassuring.

“If I could fix it, I would,” he says at last, quietly and with more feeling that he had meant.

“I don’t need you to fix it,” George replies. “This is good.” He takes a breath, and they lay there in silence for a moment before he speaks again. “Maybe you can get me my big sweatshirt down from the closet door in a minute and we can circle back to me not dressing like Adam Sandler tomorrow.”

“You mean my big sweatshirt,” Joe says.

George squeezes his hand, appreciating the inclination toward a joke – appreciating the not making a big deal. “If a person wears something more than three times in a row, ownership passes to them. It’s like squatter’s rights.”

Joe snorts. “That feels legally binding.”

“I don’t expect you to know these things,” George says. “The state of education in this country, honestly.”

Joe tips his head down to press a kiss against George’s shoulder through his shirt, and then rolls slightly ungracefully to his feet. The big hoodie that he bought when they went to San Francisco last year and he had made the mistake of not bringing a jacket is grey and nondescript, and he snags it off the back of the closet door and brings it over to the bed, offering it to George.

“Looks better on you, anyway,” he says, as George sits up, yanking the sweatshirt over his head.

“One of these days I’ll drag you to an optometrist,” George replies fondly. “But in the meantime, I’ll allow it.”

Ramblings and extended notes follow—

Been trying to write *something* Revtane for awhile, ever since all those seasons ago, but recently playing Apex and with Revenant getting a bunch of lore again it's been getting me more pumped about it.

Always thought Revenant and Octane were like *the* match, one doles out death on the regular and the other is trying to get himself killed as a fun past time. Both of these guys live for the simple pleasure of entertaining themselves.

I don't necessarily think they are good for each other though, I feel like they feed each other's hedonisms so deep it's toxic af but that's where the fun is with them!

It's interesting to note both of them seem to have been abused by their fathers. Revenant mentions this in voicelines, Octane and his 'dad' (or was it grandfather at that stage?) were having a physical row. Neither of them seem well-adjusted in terms of relationships.

I find it just a bit challenging to balance Revenant's comicbook villain sociopathy even though he is built-in with depth. I tried to write him a little more mellow, like a coworker you're nervous about because he *can* do some pretty nasty things, but so far the nasty has yet to do them. He's also showing shades of tsundere in here, because I like writing that lmao I am trying to reign it in though. I don't really like writing the outright sociopathy, I think it's a little exhausting, so even if I wanted to write him as close to canon as possible, I am changing a lot of it I think to suit me a little. Oh well!

I really did not want to touch upon how Kaleb Cross would have been like prior to becoming a simulacrum. Even the official blurbs about Revenant that he used to need a reason to kill? Then he has no morals. I like to think he was eventually bogged down by the lifestyle of being a hitman. It's obvious he killed his dad, but I think his dad wasn't his first kill, but rather he was built up to be a hitman. Hated it. Eventually realized he could kill his dad for pushing him around.

Revenant dressed too well as a skinsuit to be straight idk no straight man can dress themselves like that.

I have a strong suspicion Octane sleeps around a lot. Like a lot. With men. He probably had a fling with one of the band members of the Flyer Liars.

I definitely see him and Seer having a fling too, but Octane doesn't *do* relationships, which I think suits him and Revenant. Not sure if I want to explore that in fic though.

Future chapters def involve them getting to know each other better? in a sense. I feel like Revenant follows Octane around lmao. Maybe also scenes about Revenant's current headache problems.

(Name) is a new legend who recently joined the Apex Games and was practicing in the firing rage. She let out a growl of frustration as she kept making mistakes with holding the gun and missing the targets completely.

She huffed and took a breath before aiming her sentinel towards a target. "C'mon...just one..." (Name) whispered to herself as her index finger hovered over the trigger. As she took the opportunity to shoot her foot slipped from under her which made her fall face first and miss the shot once more.

You stood there in silence staring at the ground, then let out a loud yell of frustration before getting up and throwing the gun roughly onto the ground. You're breath was unsteady with anger as you felt small tears pricking at your eyes.

"Woah, be careful with the gear mate!" You turned towards the voice swiftly which seemed to surprise the man since you saw him jolt backwards slightly. "Bloody hell! You look like...bloody hell!" He said.

You recognised him. Fuse. You've seen him play in the games on your TV before you joined and admired how he played. "You there mate? You alright?" He asked, you could hear his Australian accent pretty damn clear.

You moved some hair out oof your face and picked up the gun you threw. "Not really, I just can't get the hang of these snipers and sub machine guns and I'm frustrated about it." You muttered as you turned to look at Fuse.

He put a hand towards his face while thinking. "Alright mate, I'll help you" he smirked. "What? Why?" You asked. He started to walk towards you and grabbed a R-99 fro himself and a second one for you. "Why not? Nothing else to do right now so why not help you out hm?" You didn't protest so he continued.

"Here, let's practice with close range first" he handed you the R-99 which you took  without a word. He laughed. "Am I not getting a thank you mate? Just kidding, you can thank me later with a drink maybe." He shrugged his shoulders and motioned you towards the close range targets.

"Alright, show me what you've got mate!" You looked at him unsure but aimed at the target anyway. As you took your shot several rounds you finally hit a target with a bullet and you smiled. "Hurray I got one!" You smiled. "Good job mate, but uhhh, we're still going to need to work on your aim." He said as he pointed out the several bullet marks on the ground.

You're smiled dropped in sadness. "Oh." Fuse noticed how sad you sounded and went up to you. "Here let me show you how to hold the gun properly" he said as he guided your hands to the correct positions with his own. You felt the cold metal from his arm as it brushed against yours which made you slightly shiver.

His face was close to yours as he aimed your arm towards the target. Only now, you started to take in his features. His chocolate brown eyes and his (killer) moustache, his sharp jawline and how some loose strands of his hair fell on his head. You never realised how good he looks till now.

You're face felt warm. We're you blushing?! You started to panic. Just then Fuse looked you in the eye. "You alright there mate?" He asked kindly. Which made your ears warm. "I'm fine!" You responded a little too quick for your liking. He smirked. "Whatever you say!"

He helped aim the gun again in your hands. You properly focused this time. "Try shooting now" Fuse said letting go of you which slightly disappointed you since you enjoyed his touch.

You quickly realised what the hell you were thinking about and quickly shook that thought out of your head and looked through the optics and took a shot. This time you got a proper headshot and the target dummy fell down. You smiled brightly and did a few little jumps of joy forgetting that Fuse was behind you watching with a proud grin on his face from your reaction. Fuse muttered a small "cute" under his breath.

You heard Fuse mutter something and turned towards him embarrassed since he saw your little happy fit. Fuse immediately saw the blush on your face and thought that you heard him mutter under his breath which immediately made him feel hot. "Uhhh, you did great mate-! Just keep practicing and try out more weapons!"

Fuse quickly collected himself before speaking again. "If you ever need more help I'll help you out best I can but I've gotta go now!" he smiled. You, who was still embarrassed quickly nodded your head in acknowledgment and muttered a quick 'thank you.'

Fuse nodded and started to walk away. "I'll see you around (Name)!" He called as he neared the exit which made you surprised since you hadn't told him your name. You watched him walk away until he turned around and yelled.

"You have a nice arse!" He winked and quickly left the firing range leaving you a blushing mess.

Ok biased opinion but YESSS. Like there's a good amount of lore in the game, though it's fps, each character has a personality, there's diversity and representation, canon LGBT ships and characters???? Super great interactions btwn characters, imo fun gameplay for yk, fps. (So ofc u get the player that isn't rlly a team player, but what fps doesn't have an abundance of those?)

Also there's sm like potential I'm just. Attachment lmao. Like imo, even though I started being into it for the lesbians, I'm maining Mirage and I fucking LOVE everything Abt him. He's such and enigma I wanna dissect him. And even though he's supposed to be funny man™️, his backstory is....dark, to say the least.

Also Bangalore has the nicest fucking voice, when she says "I got you." It's like. Like you feel PROTECTED I dunno that line just gets me every time!?! Valkyrie has some gay AF lines and says "Who loves you baby?" Every time you say thanks, and gosh. Gosh I'm like you do valk U DO–

They're heart-warming reminders that sometimes you can meet people online and form a friendship with them that survives the test of space, distance, timezones, ups and downs, and grief.

It's hard to believe 10 years have passed since we've known each other, but here's to 10 more years of more laughs, more jokes, and more joy. Thanks for being a great friend!

1 - Zathran's People Needed Him (SWTOR)

This is one of those memories that we often refer to amongst ourselves. The comedic timing between our comments is great.

1.25 - Gaerwen Aurell and Zathran Ijaat (SWTOR)

This was the friendship dynamic duo that started it all. Countless AUs spawned from these two, countless stories, and eventually, we both took the dive and merged our SWTOR legacies/families together into one universe.

1.5 - Zath Finally Gets Nightmare Brontes Wings (SWTOR)

Zath was one of the last people in the guild to earn the NIM Brontes wings lmao -- but when they did, it was great!

1.75 - Barsen'thor Buddies (SWTOR)

Barsen'thor Buddies was created as a guild for Zath and I originally. We were just a two person team until we decided to recruit people raid and pvp with us. We recruited people from the server and from tumblr in the olden days. We used to raid regularly and achieved many raid oriented goals. Some highlights include discussing whether this scene from National Treasure could be considered iconic to talking about OCs to labeling bad pugs as the proverbial "Steve."

2 - Almost Instant Regret (Overwatch)

Throughout our Overwatch 1 career, Zath often played Zarya would use the Graviton Ultimate to set up team wipes for me while I was playing Hanzo. I got really cocky in this game, but Zath had my back when someone tried to spoil my play of the game...

3 - Zath Becomes Superman (Overwatch)

The Iron Giant has nothing on this.

4 - Zath Panics When I Scream (PUBG)

Notoriously, in my early days of playing battle royale games like PUBG and Apex, I would get jumpscared easily by enemy players. I tend to scream/panic first, shoot second, give Zath information third. Not really helpful for your teammates! But this has become kind of a meme between us even though I no longer get jumpscared (as often).

5 - Check Your Corn-- (PUBG)

Zath doesn't get jumpscared often, but when they do... Well, make sure you're prepared with backup clothes. Sound warning on this one.

6 - Hacksaw Ridge (Apex Legends)

In this epic, thrilling match from the early days of Apex, Zath played Lifeline and learned the hard way what it takes to be a field medic in a battle royale game. I love this memory because it features some of Zath's funniest one liners, Zath saving the day countless times over. It also features a good old instance of me getting jumpscared.

7 - That Was a Mozambiqueeeeeeee (Apex Legends)

It's not often that Zath breaks the sound barrier with their voice, but lo and behold... sound warning on this one :P

8 - Thaeus and Ziael (World of Warcraft)

I think of our WoW OCs, Thaeus and Ziael have had the most development and story-based growth. A druid and a deathknight, who would have thought that they could fall in love? They are one of my favorite pairings because of their personalities and their dynamics. Zath has created a death knight character who subverts many of the typical tropes we see with these kinds of characters. Thaeus is kind, warm (in spite of being a *frost* death knight), and loving towards Ziael and his family. He is Zath's favorite of their large swath of OCs and played characters. It goes without saying that Zath is an excellent death knight and it's been a pleasure to see how Thaeus has grown in both retail as Zath's perpetual tinkered character and now in Classic as one of the guild's highest parsers.

9 - Rated Battlegrounds with Zath Leading (World of Warcraft, Retail)

Zath always was a champ leading our RBG team. This is my favorite game recorded from that era. This game has a little bit of it all. People ribbing Zath playfully. Zath and I bantering over Frost Mage being good, for once! Ultimately, this game was a win where everyone had fun.

10 - Zath Podfics (Control 2019)

Zath has started reading some of my fics out loud. Honestly, this has been one of the greatest gifts they have ever given me. Hearing my stories outloud has helped me overcome some of my own imposter syndrome as a writer. When I hear Zath reading my stories, it shows me that I am a good writer. I hear the cadence, the intended tone of dialogue, the humor within humorous scenes. Normally I'm so detached from what I'm writing because I'm so immersed in it already. Having an outside perspective bringing the scenes to life has been a tremendous gift, one that I know has been produced with love, passion, and care.

Just for funsies, here's a quick primer on my God of War fanfics, for anyone who's interested in reading them. So far everything has been written PRE-Ragnarok release, though I definitely have plans for more stuff.

will the circle be unbroken? is the series where I've been sticking all the interconnected fics I wrote and assumed would be non-canon once Ragnarok hit. They're not NOT canon, but I definitely had Kratos open up about a lot more than he had in canon and also assumed Thrud was the oldest daughter. So less canon divergent than my usual but don't expect them to align with Ragnarok 100%. I'll probably be borrowing fic canon from these in my Ragnarok follow up fics so long as it doesn't contradict Ragnarok canon.

memories of mother is a series I've been working on exploring Laufey's story. It has a lot of overlap with the "will the circle be unbroken" but has also been like. Planned out and stuff, lmao. I'm going to be continuing this one and integrating Ragnarok canon, but it won't be fully canon-canon. If you're new here, just know that happens with me a lot.

hammer of the gods / will drive our ships to new lands is a crossover series I started back when I played Apex Legends. I don't play Apex anymore but I've kept writing this because I'm emotionally attached to them now. It is very non-canon for Apex Legends and also not Ragnarok canon, but people like them, so there's that. (If you regularly comment on my crossover fics know that I love you.)

I also re-wrote Fallen God because I hated how Fallen God went and wrote Mimir's first meeting with Kratos and Atreus from Mimir's POV. It's the most canon thing I've written yet.

So yeah, that's my fics, I have more ideas incoming, hope you enjoy them!!!!

I main Bang and Path pretty much since forever. Bango is a great jack of all trades for solo queuing, and Paffy is just fun. Grabble is the most fun thing in a shooter probably ever. I'm very looking forward to his passive rework so he can have a better place in [incel voice] The Meta in the future.

For flavor alone, Rampart is stand-out bc she's actually funny in a way vibbo games very rarely manage to be. Path is a delight all the time. He got a new intro line recently that riffs off one of Bang's dumb, edgy ones and that delights me. I was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable Loba became under the Gamer Veneer of "idk, a hot lady." Playing Bango for thousands of games means I do begrudgingly love her in like a (derogatory) (affectionate) kind of way. Would sure be nice if she could have a W in her personal life sometime this century lmao

Worst characters for gameplay and flavor are Caustic (camp meta sucks) and Valk (in need of a total character overhaul, never should have been added to the game in the first place). Thank you Respawn for giving me so many gays to choose from that I can actively dislike the one who reminds me of every smarmy, un-funny jackass who talks down to people on Twitter and calls it a personality.

Apex is a battle royale where you play in groups of 3 with over 21 legends to choose from each with their unique abilities and their own personalities and stories there are also many different weapons to choose from

unfortunately most legends are locked when you start but by playing and leveling up you can unlock them when you get the hang of the game or if you want you can spend money on the currency called Apex Coins to instantly unlock legends or buy from a rotation of cosmetics in the store

In game after leaving the drop ship you have to find you weapons or equipment on the ground but you can find a variety of different weapons of various ammo types such as: Light, Heavy, Shotgun, Sniper, and Energy pretty much anywhere you look there will be at least 1 weapon

You can use the games firing range to find out which weapons you prefer or practice using the different legends abilities that you have unlocked

A weapon that I recommend as a starter weapon if you can find it is the R301 Carbine or R301 for short has easy to control recoil with decent damage output it’s an iconic weapon that a lot of people enjoy myself included

The Legends all have abilities that you’ll have to learn to use they’re all unique and can appeal to different play styles

The lore is updated frequently as well if you’re interested in that through in game events or through their social media giving insight to the characters lore and background as well as having a new story in game every season

The main bits of story for each of the legends is called a “Stories From The Outlands” or “SFTO” for short they focus on a single legend and gives us background for their character and how they ended up at the Apex Games
