Honremos la primer publicación con un personaje shakesperiano icónico en el mundo del arte, Ofelia...
Gertrude "There is a willow grows askaunt the brook, That shows his hoary leaves in the glassy stream, Therewith fantastic garlands did she make Of crow-flowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples That liberal shepherds give a grosser name, But our cull-cold maids do dead men’s fingers call them. There on the pendant boughs her crownet weeds Clamb’ring to hang, an envious sliver broke, When down her weedy trophies and herself Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide, And mermaid-like awhile they bore her up, Which time she chaunted snatches of old lauds, As one incapable of her own distress, Or like a creature native and indued Unto that element. But long it could not be Till that her garments, heavy with their drink, Pull’d the poor wretch from her melodious lay To muddy death."

Arthur Sze | Midnight Flame
#ArthurSze #asianheritagemonth #poetry
At midnight, he can’t see the white picket fence or the tomato stalks, shriveled, in the garden, though he knows the patio, strewn with willow leaves, plumes of tall grasses, upright and still; and, as he peers into the yard, he senses a moment wicking into flame —  walking up an arroyo, they gaze back across the Pojoaque valley, spot the glinting tin roofs, cottonwoods leafing along the…

DAY 1: Salix lasiolepis
Date: 8/28/2019
Time: 9:40 AM
Location: Lower Arroyo Park, along Arroyo Seco Trail
Route:  Along the Arroyo Seco Trail, about 200 feet past the large cement water fountain/pool on the western side of the trail in front of the coast live oak previously observed.
Weather: About 75F.  Hot and sunny with little shade to cool down.
Habitat:  Salix lasiolepis was located within riperian environment.  Arroyo Seco was visible behind the tree.  Lot’s of shorter scrub plants surrounding it, some cottonwoods of varying sizes around.  Salix was the home of several insects, mostly ants.
SALIX LASIOLEPIS - ARROYO WILLOW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Saliz lapiolepis leaves are long and pointy towards the end. They are a classic light green color on top and a more dull green on the bottom.  The edges of the leaves aren’t sharply serrated, but they do have little bumps along the edges.
The tree itself is a multi-trunked tree with several smaller trunks coming together to create the image of a large tree.  Salix lapiolepis is considered a large shrub.
Salix lasiolepis is a dissiduous tree, meaning that when winter rolls around, it will drop its leaves and become bare.  This plant requires more water than plants such as quarkus or malosma - it’s normally found in a riperian environment (meaning that where you find a salix, water is somewhere nearby).
While looking at this salix, I noticed a lot of ants going up and down its branches and around its leaves.  The bark of the willow tree contains salicin which converts to salicylin acid - used to make aspirin. The ants surround the willow protecting its bark, and feeding off it - this interaction is called mutualism. I tasted the bark and noticed it had a bitter taste
Some fun facts about willow:
I mentioned earlier that its bark contains salicin which is similar to sallicylic acid - used to make aspirin
Willow stems have been used by indigenous cultured worldwide for dental care.  You take a stem, fan out the edges and use it as a makeshift toothbrush!
Willow bark was also used to make rope.

“Death isn’t much,” she said. She was sitting on the sand, with feet out straight in front, arranging short willow twigs into bundles, tying them with fluffy cotton string that she had twisted by hand. They had found a calf in the arroyo that morning; small black ants were already making trails across the head, from the nose to the eyes. The belly was bloating out as the sun climbed higher in the sky.
“Sometimes they don’t make it. That’s all. It isn’t very far away.” She looked up at him intently, and then continued.
“There are much worse things, you know. The destroyers: they work to see how much can be lost, how much can be forgotten. They destroy the feeling people have for each other.”
He took a deep breath; it hurt his chest. He thought of Josiah then, and Rocky.
“Their highest ambition is to gut human beings while they are still breathing, to hold the heart still beating so the victim will never feel anything again. When they finish, you watch yourself from a distance and you can’t even cry - not ever for yourself.”
He recognized it then: the thick white skin that had enclosed him, silencing the sensations of living, the love as well as the grief; and he had been left with only the hum of tissues that enclosed him. He never know how long he had been lost there, in that hospital in Los Angeles.
“They are all around now. Only destruction is capable of arousing a sensation, the remains of something alive in them; and each time they do it, the scar thickens, and they feel less and less, yet still hungering for more.” She gathered up the bundles of twigs and started walking southwest.

Listen I know it's like 6 weeks too early to engage in this brand of hyperanalytical hiatus crackheadery, but apparently this is happening anyway, and I need to talk about Eddie Diaz and willow trees as illustrated in 4x12 (Treasure Hunt).
Okay so stick with me. It's definitely nothing and yet it stuck out enough on my re-watch for me to have Opinions about it. Yes, nitpicking over inane details that ultimately probably mean nothing is how I am coping after that finale.
We know there's a lot going on in the poem that the chaotic shithead writer left behind, and yet something that feels constantly repeated about it is the section about the willow trees. And this section is often referenced BY Eddie. Four different times, if my count is correct. So maybe this means nothing, but idk, when he could talk about literally any other part of the poem and he keeps coming back to those willow trees, I get sus. So naturally I did some researching, and here are my findings:
"The willow tree gives us hope, a sense of belonging, and safety. Furthermore, the ability to let go of the pain and suffering to grow new, strong and bold. The image of the willow tree is our path to stability, hope, and healing."
And I'm sorry but if that 'ain't Eddie Diaz's journey then I don't know what is. And here's the specific fucking symbolism attached to the Arroyo Willow, which Eddie specifically mentions to Buck and Taylor:
"The willow grows long, straight shoots in the spring. These shoots are highly flexible and resist breakage. It symbolizes grief – (bending) and recovery  – (bouncing back)."
I don't mean to scream but IS THAT NOT EDDIE DIAZ TO A FREAKING T? Somebody hold me because I am screaming.
Anyway, do with that what you will, I love searching for and overanalyzing stupid symbolic bullshit, so 9-1-1 is a feast for me.
Thank you @emofrxnk for engaging in this crackheadery with me
