Lunari Heritage in Zaun
This is gonna be a reach, but from the little we've seen of Vi and Jinx's mom and younger Silco, I'd guess they were both from the same ethnic group.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In a place like Zaun, where the people are left with scraps, any piece of jewelry sticks out. Vi's mom and Silco are both wearing similar pieces of jewelry. Silco's bracelet could likely be fitted as a necklace since it twice wraps over his wrist. Neither are wearing anything of high quality, but the necklace and bracelet in their respective pictures seem decently maintained if not worn. That's when I thought, these are probably heirlooms.
Tumblr media
In fact they looked pretty similar too, but in smaller scale of the princess's own pendants. I wouldn't bring this up if it weren't for the fact that Piltovans prioritize elaborate art-deco aesthetics, the more elaborately geometric the better (Councilor Shoola). So you would assume even the simplest jewelry would be a square pendant or a straight line. But no, big plain circles, and then I remembered we saw that before, on the princess Ambessa killed. Big bronze circles.
Tumblr media
And when we look at young Vi , you notice that she's wearing jewelry too. A simple necklace with a green (it looks green) gem. And I realized that the princess's necklace was also adorned green gems.
Tumblr media
I'm pulling from scraps, but it's interesting that small things these Zaunites have to adorn themselves (though not for long with the time skips) are similar versions if not simpler version's of the princess's.
Tumblr media
At first I thought this meant that many of the cast were actually of Ionian descent. But then in the Princess's scene a thought kept coming back to me, "Why is Mel wearing purple?". Mel, a skilled diplomat from a young age, typically wears the main colors of the nations she hosts and is hosted by. White for Piltover, Black for Noxus (Ambessa), and always with her signature accents of gold. So if Mel followed her mother to Ionia ,where green is a culturally significant color, why purple? It's because Mel and Ambessa weren't in Ionia, they were in Targon fighting the Lunari.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Lunari are Rakkor tribal people in the Targonian region who worship the moon, and are persecuted for it by the Solari, the religious order that worships the sun. While technically Mt. Targon is influenced by Mt. Olympus and Greek mythology aesthetic, that's more the case for the Solari. Overtime the Lunari aesthetic has been mixed it's originally nomadic culture with East Asian influences. The prominent colors of the Lunari happen to be turquoise, silver, black and purple. It was such a little thing to remember but it made me see connections I hadn't thought about.
Tumblr media
Suddenly everything starts to connect. The bronze coins represent the 3 moons that exist in Arcane's Runeterra. How do we know there are 3 moons, because the Valdiani piece Jinx stole was depicting their planet. In the Valdiani there are 3 orbits circling the Earth, meaning 3 moons (or satelites). Now the engraving on the gold of the princess's necklace makes sense, because it's supposed to resemble the gates at the peak of Mt. Targon. The pendant itself is shaped like the mountain with the gates fitted at the top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frankly, it works for the Princess to have been Lunari and waves of descendants of the Lunari to arrive in Piltover and end up in Zaun. In Arcane, Piltover was created as a safe haven to escape the Rune Wars 200 years from the start of the show. Even after the Rune Wars ended the shipping port has likely seen waves of migrant labor and refugees from the ongoing crisis that occur in Runeterra (*cough*Noxus*cough*). It's likely that many of the current generation of Zaunites are of mixed heritage of the various fleeing people's.
It creates a whole new dynamic of the ways in which Piltover's laws, their Ethos, strips the people of Zaun from their identity and reducing them to tools for the mines. Magic is inherently a part of religious ceremonies and religion in general in Runeterra, especially for the Lunari. How do you practice your religion in a place that has banned the means by which it's conducted? There must have been more people like the Lunari who didn't have a problem with their magic, their problem was that they were being persecuted.
The remnants of family keepsakes brought over as communities fled were clung to as best as possible especially as they had to let go of part their spiritual identity. But even that doesn't seem to have lasted either. Vi doesn't keep her necklace, her mother is dead, so lost is her necklace, and we never see Silco wear his bracelet. They could have been stolen, or at best, hidden for safe keeping, maybe Enforcers get suspicious at the hint of mysticism and suddenly they want to talk.
Finally, maybe a little less related, it is interesting how prominent Piltovans and Zaunites take on day and night aspects. The sun shines over Piltover at their best, begins to set at times of uncertainty. While in the cover of night with moon above, the strongest Zaunites strike hardest. One more thing, it is interesting how Arcane's Jinx has taken on darker tones of purple rather than stick with neon pink. I always have to go back and look at a reference to remember that her pants are purple-er than I recall.
Update: I wanted to include that the large doodle Jinx made on her cup actually looks similar to the Lunari's sigil. And the sigil remains on the cup into the timeskip, also the center moon is made smaller within the crescent like in the necklace. I also noticed Jinx's cup later has more violent bomb imagery around it.

Grammy Night 23’
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"I feel like I'm going to burst the seams of the dress."  Y/n commented looking at herself in the mirror as Lamby's assistant finished zipping her dress, her breasts were almost bursting out of it, a beautiful creation made of Swarovski silver crystals.
“Darling, you are going to be the hottest woman on that carpet.”  Her husband’s stylist praised her  bringing in his hand the fishnet mask with crystals that would go over her eyes and dyed peacock feathers that went on the back of her head. “See if the crystals will get in the way of you seeing.”
“Honey Baby, how do I look?” Y/n turned to see her husband walking into the room, she knew what he would wear, she had seen the sketches but it was another thing to see the final result.  Harry looked hot as hell, the colorful crystal patchwork jumpsuit couldn't be more perfect on him, it showed his chiseled body, the tattoos,  the fantastic chest his fans—and wife—are crazy about, all the hair, the lonely curl... Harry just smiled, the answer to his question was clear in the way his wife stared at him.  "See people, that's why we have three kids."  He joked pointing to his wife,  causing their team to laugh.  “You are a vision Honey.” He said pecking her on the lips, hands going to her waist. “My favorite MILF.” He whispers, kissing her neck.
“Says the man who half the internet calls ‘’Daddy’” She teases.
“Having my kids did good to you.”  He jokes staring at his wife's cleavage.
Y/n just rolls her eyes, a smile still in her face.
“Darling, Sue, sorry to interrupt your dirty talk,  but it’s frosting time, and then you guys are good to go.” Lambert came their way with a jewelry tray.
Before Lamby could start helping Y/n with the pieces of jewelry they'd selected at Tiffany's in NYC the week before, H interrupted him, pulling a chain from his pocket.
“You don't have to wear it today, I bought it as a push present and also celebrate my Grammy nominations, I wouldn't be here today without you, My Love.”  The chain was white gold, delicate with colored stones, and a teardrop diamond the same color as her engagement ring held by a fig.
The woman was speechless, looking from the necklace to her lover of more than a decade.  It was a substantial gift, but Harry had always been generous, and he enjoyed spoiling her since they’re teens and couldn’t afford diamonds. She just turned around, allowing him to fasten the jewel around her neck.  She ran her hand over the diamond, it was the exact same color as her engagement ring—a fancy green diamond almost the same color of her husbands eyes—.
“My Love… this is beautiful, thank you so much.” She turned around, taking his face between her hands and kissing him passionately, trying to express through the kiss all her love for him.
Harry smiled into the kiss, his hands tightening on her hips.
Jeff came in at that exact moment to inform them that the car was already waiting to take them from the Chateau to the Crypto.com Arena.
Lambert and his assistant quickly help Y/n put on all the jewelry Tiffany had borrowed them, the Edwardian choker, which complemented the necklace Harry had given her, a mishmash of earrings—a massive chandelier, followed by a dainty stud, and diamond hoops—in all of her ear piercings, a beautiful Art Deco bracelet mixed with the colorful collection of  tennis bracelets Y/n wore to mark every Mother's Day since the birth of her eldest son.
On her fingers she preferred to go with her usual rings.
Her engagement ring and wedding band were the only rings on her left hand.  While on the right she wore the same 'S' as H on her little finger, a delicate 'H' in colored diamonds, infinity bands of different stones, and a vintage solitaire on her index finger—a Christmas present the kids had picked out with Grandma Anne —.
Lambert's assistant helped her on with her shoes—high-heeled Mary Janes from Gucci—while she was held by both Harrys to keep her balance.
As they were rushed to the car by Jeff, Y/n remembered to turn around and ask someone to remember to pack her breast pump along with the rest of their outfits.
In the car, to try and ease Harry's anxiety, they video-phoned the children—who were being watched by Gemma and Anne—Primrose answered their grandmother's cell phone, dressed in a bear onesies that made her look like a teddy bear, showing the TV room to her parents and the snacks gran-gran made, auntie Gemma sitting in the couch  with a sleeping  baby Bluebell, the three months old dressed just like her big sister.  Otto was in the bathroom according to Prim who was chattering non-stop making Harry smile more relaxed.
It always warmed Y/n’s heart that nothing could make H as happy and relaxed as their babies.
They said goodbye to their daughter when the car stopped in front of the arena, Y/n handing over the phone to Jeff to keep. Harry get out of the car first and waits in the doorway to help his wife out and supports her from behind as they make the slightly uneven path between the car and the carpet, his right hand firmly on her right while his left hand was firmly on her hip, and she held his wrist for more balance.  The couple made their way under the screams of fans and the flash of cameras.
It was only when they were already at a certain point on the carpet that Harry placed himself next to his wife and the two started to walk hand in hand.  They stops for photos along the way, but don't do any interviews, heading straight for the cocktail area. The couple interacted with acquaintances and friends, especially those they hadn't seen in a while. The last two and a half years have been crazy, Fine Line, Covid 19, quarantine with two young children, Pleasing, Harry filming and premieres, Harry’s House, Love on Tour and a new baby.  They were busy and it seemed like they rarely had time for their friends, as all their free time was being spent with the little  family they had created together.
Both changed clothes in Harry's designated dressing room before heading to their seats—crystal outfits were cute but impractical when you have to sit for hours, Harry donned a Gucci suit costume made for him, while Y/n wore a silver sequin  Markarian gown matching Harry's shirt. The couple certainly looks gorgeous, always matching theirs outfits in subtle ways.
They have their hands clasped together, she holding his hands so he wouldn’t pick on his cuticles, Harry is quieter than usual allowing Y/n to take the lead and interact with other people—which, having been married to him for nearly eight years, and knowing him since she was born, she could tell it was a sign of nervousness.
She whispered to him how amazing the album was and that he didn't need the validation that it was a little golden gramophone for the world to know that.
Nervousness turns to euphoria when Harry becomes the first winner of the night, taking the award for best pop album.
Y/n didn't even hear Jennifer Lopez's introductory speech, her eyes focused on Harry's handsome profile.
Y/n is the first to his feet when he hears Harry's name being screamed by J.Lo, applauding his husband energetically, the smile on Harry's face is blinding, he takes his wife's face between his hands and kisses her, before continuing to be hugged and greeted by people around the table and nearby. She has tears in her eyes, which the cameras make a point of showing when they zoom in on her at the exact moment when Harry on stage dedicates the award to his wife for being his muse and inspiration.
One of the highlights of the night for the couple was without a doubt the fact that Y/n had been invited to present the performance of 'As It Was'.
In a gold-metal mesh top and long skirt, showing off her midriff, the woman who had become famous at fifteen as Harry Styles' 'best friend' took the stage flanked by her two eldest children, seven-year-old Otto, dressed in a pink suit and beige turtleneck by Gucci and a crochet daisy bucket hat covering his curls, and adorable four-year-old Primrose, twining with her brother in a blue Gucci suit, her curls adorned by a huge crystal bow.
“Many of you fell in love with the next artist to perform here tonight in 2011 when he became one of the members of one of the biggest boy bands in history, he has been delivering hits ever since, amassing fans around the world, and delighting hearts with his music, he is an icon, a sex symbol, and one of the greatest musicians of our time, but for us he is simply the greatest husband and father, it is with immense pleasure that I am here tonight, with our two eldest children, to introduce one of the most authentic, generous, kind artists on the planet, the love of my existence, here, to delight us with his Grammy-nominated song 'As It Was', my husband and father of my children,” She lowered the microphone, allowing the two children to squeal excitedly into the device, “Harry Styles!”
And for the first time in a live performance Primrose was present to say the already famous: ‘Come on Daddy! We wanna say good night to you!' driving the audience crazy.
Y/n and the kids made their way to their table dancing to her husband’s song, the mother of three splitting her attention between walking in her heels and looking where the kids were going, Otto made a short stop dancing with Taylor Swift, and saying something to her that made the singer throw her head back laughing. Y/n greeted Taylor with kisses on the cheek before redirecting her son to their table.
An extra chair was brought over for Otto—who was at the next table greeting Lizzo and Adele.
Prim sat in Harry's chair waiting for daddy, and Y/n wouldn't even insist that the little girl sit on her lap, as she knew she couldn't compete with her husband when it came to their children. When they least expected it, Harry was back, in his Gucci suit—and not in what Otto was referring to as ‘daddy bedazzled Chewbacca costume’.
"Surprise!"  Y/n sings to her husband as he lifts their daughter up, making the little girl giggle, and sat with her on his lap, kissing their daughter's cheek, and fist bumping their son.
It was a surprise she had been planning for over a week, at times she was afraid someone would let it out, especially Prim, who was known in the family for not being able to keep secrets—just like her daddy.
“Thank you, Honey Baby.” He thanked his wife with a peck, his whole face lit up with the appearance of the children. “You look godly.” Harry  complimented her, eyes roaming all over the outfit, he knew what a big step it was for his wife to wear something so daring after three pregnancies, despite her beautiful body—especially in his eyes—Y/n was insecure about her stretch marks.
“Thank you, my life.” She pulled his hand to hers and kissed the back of his hand.
They watched the awards half-heartedly, at every turn Otto and Prim brought their parents' attention to them with funny anecdotes, and Y/n was having to keep a hand on their son's shoulder to make sure the boy didn't wander off. The family of four cheered when Lizzo was announced as the winner of Song of the Year, Otto ran with open arms to the honorary auntie congratulating her for the award, he didn't even care that 'daddy' had lost, auntie Lizzo had won!
With every moment that passed, anxiety rose, Y/n was confident in her husband’s album—the album she had inspired—, while Harry was sure Album of the Year was between Beyonce and Bad Bunny.
She shook Harry's hand as Noah Trevor took the stage to announce the final awards of the night, asking fans of the nominees to join him, when the comedian asked Harry's fan to read the name on the envelope, Harry broke down with gratefulness, disbelieve, joy…
Prim clung to her father's neck screaming that he had won.
Y/n stood up applauding her husband, Otto hugging his mother's hips showing his father’s  twin smile, dimples and all.
Harry got to his feet after composing himself, smiling Primrose hanging on his neck with  her legs curled around his hips.
Harry kissed his wife with a huge smile, ruffled his son's curls, hugged Jeff, Tyler and Tom, Lizzo, who filmed everything excited.  The singer took the stage with his children and their two producers, he put Prim on the floor so he could hug his fan and accept his award, Primrose and Otto hugging him on either side.
“Shit…well, shit.”  He looked at his children. “Sorry kids.”
H was speechless, Y/n could see it from a distance.
Jeff wrapped a arm around her when she started to tear up.
Harry was so humbled and grateful, and this was such a huge moment in his career, and she was so proud of the man she had married.  The boy from Holmes Chapel who worked in a bakery and always came to pick her up with cupcakes in his hands and flowers he had picked from the neighbor's garden. Her husband was a three times Grammy Award winner, and he had just owned the biggest award of the night.
The woman frowned as she heard people in the audience yelling negativity at her husband, how Beyonce should have won and some yelling at him to get off the stage.
This was his moment, it wasn't his choice to win, two thousand of his peers had voted and chosen him, chosen Harry's House as the best Album. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you don't have to be an asshole.
 Treat People With Kindness.
She was happy to see Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Shania, Lizzo, H.E.R and Adele giving him a standing ovation, and hearing his shaken speech.
He once again dedicated it to her and their kids, calling them ‘his home’. Y/n quickly joined her husband backstage, arms going around Harrys’s neck, as his hands found her hips. The couple smiled at each other before kissing passionately, his team applauding the moment.
“I’am so proud of you, My Life.” She held his face in her hands. “You did it! You put out an amazing album, delivered a killer tour, 2022 was your year, and you deserved that Album of the Year award!” She states brushing his nose with hers, a huge smile on her face before kissing him again.

c1930 Gay Frères 18K Collar
An intricate filigreed collar necklace in 18K yellow gold made by the Swiss jeweler Gay Frères. The company was best known for producing high end watch bracelets for Rolex, but throughout the 19th and 20th century, they also produced exceptionally well-made and inventive jewelry pieces. This collar wears beautifully and moves as fluidly as silk. The design is reminiscent of French necklaces from the 1890s, but the detailing is distinctly Art Deco. Weighs 60.1 grams.

Thanks for the tag, @as-dreamers-do! :)
Last Song I Listened To: So You Are Tired by Sufjan Steven's. Spotify alerted me that he had a new song out so I had to check it out! I used to be big into his Illinois and Michigan albums back in the day, and his first set of Christmas albums (though my roommates hate those) but I haven't really checked out his newer stuff. Good song. Sad, painfully fragile. Just what you want from him.
Currently Watching: We finally managed to get Only Murders in the Building to work on the TV so we watched the first episode of the new season tonight! Started Mentopolis last week, finished up the first season of Fantasy High this week, and my gym show is Kimi no Todoke because I needed something sweet and harmless.
Currently Reading: I just finished The Q by Beth Brower (who also wrote my best beloved Emma M Lion) so I'm sort of between books at the moment. I should probably start the next Annotated Austen, which looks like it will be Mansfield Park... which I read last year and almost don't feel ready to reread even with annotations? I might need a bit longer or to wait until I've finished one of the poetry books I'm in the middle of (Selected Poems of Mark Strand and Jenny Joseph's The Thinking Heart). ...and I'm following the Blue Castle book club tags, with no intention to follow along in the book because I reread that last year too. I just love seeing people's reactions! ...oh blast, and I forgot I still haven't finished Our Lady of Kingdoms.
Current Obsession: I'm back in an HP RPG, Marauder Era this time so... I'm really interested in the 70s at the moment and everything my characters are into (poetry, folk music, art deco jewelry, disco) even if I don't always have time to research. Deeply obsessed with D20 and Brennan Lee Mulligan (and Worlds Beyond Number! So good! Please release this week's episode!) And this feels like it's meant to be about media but in the summer I want to eat fruit all the time and right now I'm very into frozen grapes. So delicious, so refreshing.
Tagging @magnetocerebro , @scarvenartist and @melliabee and anyone else who wants to do it!

The History and Evolution of Costume Jewellery
Costume jewellery, also known as fashion jewellery, has a rich and fascinating history that spans centuries. This article explores the evolution of costume jewellery, from its origins to its modern-day popularity. We'll delve into the historical significance, cultural influences, and the materials used to create these beautiful adornments.
Early Origins of Costume Jewellery
Costume jewellery's history can be traced back to ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, where both men and women adorned themselves with colorful and intricate jewelry. These early pieces were often made from materials like beads, shells, and semi-precious stones. They were used not only as decorative items but also as symbols of social status and religious significance.

Renaissance and Baroque Eras
The Renaissance and Baroque eras brought about a resurgence of costume jewellery in Europe. During these periods, elaborate and ornate designs were created using various materials like glass, enamel, and faux gemstones. The growing popularity of masquerade balls and theatrical performances further fueled the demand for costume jewellery.
19th Century: The Birth of Costume Jewellery
The 19th century saw the birth of the costume jewellery industry as we know it today. With the Industrial Revolution, manufacturers started producing affordable, mass-produced jewellery. This allowed a broader audience to access fashionable accessories, regardless of their social class.
Art Nouveau and Art Deco Movements
The Art Nouveau movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought a shift towards more natural and organic designs. Costume jewellery pieces featured motifs inspired by nature, such as flowers, insects, and animals.
In contrast, the Art Deco movement that followed embraced geometric shapes and bold, modern designs. This era introduced the use of materials like Bakelite and plastics, making jewellery even more accessible and affordable.
Mid-20th Century: Hollywood Glamour
The mid-20th century marked a period of Hollywood glamour, and costume jewellery played a significant role in this era. Film stars and celebrities popularized large, statement pieces, often adorned with rhinestones, faux pearls, and colored glass. These accessories added a touch of elegance and extravagance to the silver screen.

Shopworn, Thief of Spades alternate timeline drabble, ukus, T+
I was thinking about ToS and Alfred being a bench jeweler and like... Arthur really would have known immediately if he fingerprinted Alfred because bench jewelers' hands get very busted up.
So this takes place in that alternate timeline where Alfred completed his apprenticeship and became a highly acclaimed jeweler and famous jewelry designer and moved to London and met Arthur without the context of being a criminal and they are in love, etc etc.
This is really off the cuff, I just thought it would be cute.
other drabbles from this timeline Luck of the Draw Forehead kiss prompt
♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎♠︎
"Fuck!" Alfred jumps back, dropping the piece he's working on in the laser chamber with a clunk. Platinum requires such high heat in order to work with it that any laser beam glancing off of it rather than hitting the point Alfred is trying to solder is liable to hit his hand--which this one did.
It's a burn he has certainly felt before, particularly when he was an apprentice, but he hasn't been at the bench much since the move into the larger shop. His workshop here at home has been collecting dust for an embarrassingly long time now, including the laser welder and it occurs to him then that he should probably get the argon tank swapped out.
Arthur walks in to see Alfred nursing his hand and his brow furrows. "Are you alright?" he asks. "That 'fuck!' was especially loud... and they are rather increasing in frequency. Should you not stop for tonight? it's getting quite late."
Alfred huffs a mirthless laugh. "I got myself with the laser, again," he laments. He sighs and almost turns away when Arthur drags over the rolling chair from his bench, biting back a whimper when Arthur gently takes his hand. "This is humiliating," he mumbles.
"Why?" Arthur asks, mostly rhetorically. "I'm certain this happens to all jewelers, right? You're out of practice because you've been attending to other things which are also important." His fingers examine Alfred's hands and his eyes examine the conflicted expression on Alfred's face.
"It's not just that I'm out of practice," Alfred replies. "It's that my hands have healed up so much. Or at least they had. When you're at the bench all the time, you get scars and callouses and that makes it easier." He looks down at where Arthur is holding his hands and jerks them away. "God, they're so awful now, don't even look at them."
"I've noticed the change well before now," Arthur says. "And I've seen them like this before, though, yes, this is worse, but recreating an antique art deco bracelet for a famous actress is a worthy, ambitious project."
"Art nouveau," Alfred mumbles with a slight smile. He knows Arthur knows the difference given that Arthur works on many art and jewelry theft cases.
"And she was so insistent that you be the one to do it, not one of your jewelers at the shop... and apparently she was quite persuasive with her low-cut top and giggling flattery," Arthur continues, trying to sound annoyed and trying to contain his laughter.
Alfred grins just a little bit wolfishly. "I'm an easy mark, what can I say?" He glances back at the laser chamber, reaching in to make sure the bracelet is alright. It's very intricate piece, the original was made with diamonds, but Alfred will be fitting this one with rare, red spinels. The famous client wants to have it for Valentine's Day and Alfred has been working on it almost non-stop to complete it in time--so much so that he has neglected the very special project he has been working on for Arthur.
He exhales, exasperated, "I should have had one of the others do this. They're just as good as I am, if not better. She wouldn't have known the difference." He absently rubs the burn, though most of the sting is gone. The tips of his fingers are black from working with the torch, there are callouses forming in all the places they had previously healed and between harsh chemicals and washing his hands constantly, his palms and knuckles are dry and chapped.
"Come here," Arthur instructs, taking Alfred's hands in his again. He caresses them soothingly. "I know that despite what you feel right now, this project is exciting and interesting for you, so I think you would have been disappointed in yourself for not taking it."
Arthur is right, of course. "I know. It's just... on the one hand,... ha, I feel like I should be working at the bench more so that my hands don't get so soft, but on the other..." he blushes brightly and looks down, "you probably don't want me to touch you when they're like this."
Alfred tries to pull away again, but Arthur holds him this time, now partly focused on how soon they can make time to put their hands on each other. "Don't be ridiculous," he murmurs. Alfred's hands are a strange juxtaposition to the rest of him, though not in a bad way at all. Alfred loves glamour, loves being invited to high society parties, loves wearing designer dresses and glittering jewelry, but his hands, especially like this, seem to ground him. They're evidence that Alfred isn't someone merely concerned with sparkle and artifice, but that he has passion and drive toward something more solid. Alfred is a jeweler, a tradesman above all else. Arthur kisses Alfred's knuckles and then presses Alfred's palms to either side of his face and, as he suspected, he doesn't mind the roughness one bit. "A world does not exist in which I don't want you to touch me," he says quietly, but very firmly.
Alfred's insides melt, nearly the same temperature as the laser, but this burn is one he enjoys. "Aren't you smooth, Inspector?" he coos cheekily.
Arthur meets his adorably flushed face with a mischievous twinkle in his emerald eyes. "If you come to bed, I think you'll find I can be a bit rough as well, actually."

Jewelry House Histories: Bulgari
Bulgari – or Bvlgari – is synonymous with the glamour and decadence of Rome, the city where the jewelry and watch brand was established in 1884 by the Greek silversmith Sotirio Voulgaris (Bulgari). It soon thrived, thanks to British tourists who were visiting Rome as part of their Grand Tour.
Some telltale signs of Bulgari’s design are the references to imagery, architectural details and silhouettes from ancient Rome. The Bulgari logo is often spelt Bvlgari, in reference to the classical Italian alphabet.
Snapshot of Bulgari Jewelry over the last century
Sotirio Bulgari’s sons, Giorgio and Costantino, joined him in the family business and proposed a new direction away from watches and silverware, and towards high jewelry. The creations of the 1920s reflected French high jewelry traditions – platinum and diamonds were the order of the day, with a focus on Art Deco designs. The following decade saw more geometric diamond motifs, often set together with coloured gemstones. But by the 1940s, the house had established its own style with plenty of yellow gold, geometrically abstract designs and graceful curves.
With the vibrance of the ’60s, Bulgari brought a pop of colour to contemporary jewelry. The focus, for Bulgari, was on the visual impact created by their jewelry, regardless of the value of the gemstones. This focus on unparalleled color and pattern set Bulgari apart from their more conventional contemporaries.
As Rome’s reputation as a glamorous party town rose, so Bulgari bold, trend-setting statement jewelry became sought-after by an international clientele. The early 1970s took the maison to Europe and the US, where the next generation of the Bulgari family made sure that the brand catered to the tastes of modern women. Iconic pieces from the ’70s include the Bvlgari Bvlgari watch, released in 1977 and the Trombino ring.
The ’80s ’90s saw Bulgari launch versatile, modular pieces designed to be worn from morning to night, such as the Parentesi collection, which borrowed a detail (the travertine junctions) from the Eternal City’s pavements for its signature motif.
Throughout its history, unusual materials, such as steel, porcelain, silk and even wood, have elevated Bulgari creations above many of its contemporaries. The house’s bold use of colorful gemstones was much admired – and imitated.
Today, the brand excels at everything from fragrances and luxury hotels to high-end watches. When it comes to the brand’s timepieces, instantly recognizable, iconic designs meet outstanding mechanical workings. The maison has partnered with Girard-Perregaux, one of the finest Swiss watchmaking manufacturers, for its technical work. It also acquired the Swiss watch companies, Daniel Roth and Gerald Genta, among others, to help it produce luxury watches with quality elements and mechanisms.
A Hollywood Hit
During the booming decades of the 1950s and 1960s, Rome – and Bulgari – were put firmly on the map by films such as Roman Holiday and La Dolce Vita. During their time in Rome, stars such as Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman and Grace Kelly discovered the Bulgari shop in Via Condotti and became ardent fans of the maison. Bulgari jewels have since been spotted in Hollywood films, such as Casino with Sharon Stone and Mission Impossible starring Tom Cruise. Spectacular pieces have been trotted down red carpets at the Academy Awards, the Golden Globes and film festivals from Cannes to Venice.
Elizabeth Taylor glitters in Bulgari
The actress Elizabeth Taylor glittered in Bulgari jewels – it was one of her favourite maisons. The sumptuous Bulgari pieces perfectly matched her aesthetic and were a prominent part of her vast jewelry collection. She visited the Condotti store often, especially while filming Cleopatra in Rome. Many of the pieces were gifted to her by her husband, Richard Burton. Taylor’s jewelry collection went under the hammer in 2011, setting records for the most valuable sale of jewelry in auction history. Bulgari bought back nine pieces, which have become part of the Bulgari Heritage Collection.
Key Designs
Bulgari “Serpenti”
In ancient Rome, the coiled serpent symbolized wisdom and immortality. Bulgari has employed the snake motif throughout its history, using it in their lavish, polished yellow gold snake wrist watches, first designed in the 1940s, its diamond-encrusted head covering the dial of the timepiece. This design has since undergone multiple incarnations in various metals, from gold to steel, and can now be wrapped around the wrist several times.
