I know that 15 second gifs and vids are fair use. Various rights holders in Germany were extremely pissed about the German government allowing even this much. There were protests in Germany back in 2019 but especially conservative politicians were basically huge pissbabies about it, claiming the protesters were paid by google, that nothing would change and were generally very offended by so many teens and people in their 20is criticizing them. (1/2)

Continuing: This whole issue revealed how many German (and European) politicians had a very dated idea of how the internet works and sharing on the internet works. Anyway, back in 2020, Germany proposed a law that was relatively progressive despite the limitations, but the music rights holders, publishing industry etc. got very angry about. What they want is no fair use whatsoever of ANYTHING. The Germany government caved to a degree, hence the 15 seconds, small file size for images etcs. (2/2) That being said, if it hadn't been for the protests and activism, the German law would have gotten even worse. As it is, despite their crappy behavior, German politicians were conscious of younger citizens hating the law, so there are at least some safeguards in there for users. France has none, for example, because France had so many internal political issues back then, that this topic kind of went under. (I/II) Poland has filed a lawsuit against article 13/17 and the European court will decide whether this article goes against fundamental rights, but it'll only be decided in 2022, by estimate. Anyway, if the article is struck down, each country will still have to adjust their laws individually, since the article is basically a guidance with which each country has to formulate their own law to fit the article's requirement. So more drama on the horizont. (II/II).

I am very curious to see how other countries will handle it and how much freedom they are going to give people. And also how this will affect non Europeans, either through websites making big changes or countries wanting to adopt this idiocy - which I hope they won't. Hopefully, we'll get a more detailed and clear list of dos and don'ts soon. Right now it's just hard to tell what's okay and what isn't. Man, all of this makes my voting desicions even harder this time around..

Election time and the copyright reform

Do you remember the whole Art.13/17 debacle, and #saveyourinternet, and how many politicians in many countries voted for that absurd copyright reform that only benefits huge ass editorial groups while jeopardizing our freedom of speach? 

Remember how tumblr was in a riot and the world was ending? Right, this is finally time to use all that energy and make them pay. European elections are finally here and we all can NOT vote for those who chose to ignore our voice. It’s even more fun if we let them know (politely!!) via twitter or e-mail why we’re not voting for them.

KEEP ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING IN MIND

How politician behaved regarding the copyright reform is just one aspect of the matter. Always remember that some people who voted against the reform are at the same time supporters of racist and seixist policies. Some of them want to let the immigrants die at sea, others are retrograde conservatives, others are against abortion. 

So take your time to cross some datas and choose responsibly! 

ONE LAST THING

Go to vote even if you don’t know how to vote. If you don’t feel represented, it’s your right/duty to say so. Let your vote blank. A high number of blank votes could trigger a pressure that may still have some results. if you don’t go parties will know that you’re looking somewhere else and they’ll think they’ll have the freedom to do as they please.
