If in a plot twist Bton is actually poisoning traditionally published historical romance versus invigorating it lmao....................... Just my fucking luck.
#romance novel blogging#as someone who wants to be published... ideally in HR#it's been pretty concerning to see authors discuss how difficult it is rn in the subgenre#and how much of that is potentially linked with this desire to chase a bton audience#which is kinda antithetical to like... adventurous historical romance#and the vast majority of bton viewers only read quinn's books iF THAT#they don't care about the subgenre#which is fine lmao they don't have to but only publishing books that you can comp to bton#OR publishing books that aren't like bton but marketing them to that audience vs an audience that would enjoy them#is probably really negatively impacting growth atm and it bums me out#more as a writer than a reader#lol i also feel like there's this cyclical issue w new authors#where many who have bold new ideas are having a hard time getting their work out there so the subgenre stagnates#and in turn a lot of newer HR readers only wanna read super established well known authors#it feeds itself because like there seems to be a disinterest in exploration#and just the same few authors constantly recommended#but also... it's really hard to find new exciting different authors#and a lot of new authors especially in trad are mimicking quinn#which i get but i don't think it's working for anyone#idk i try not to panic over it bc let's be real indie/self publishing is probs gonna be the way for....#many romance writers in the future not just HR#but HR also seems to be kinda hard to market w indie because a lot of indie breakout successes#are successful bc of how WILD everyone thinks they are and HR has this decades-long rep of being v conventional#i mean the one good thing is that this shit always cycles in and out w subgenre popularity#nothing stays on top forever and things get rediscovered#but lol i wanna make money off this someday so.#....... sigh#maybe i'll pivot to PNR just in time for that to make a comeback lmao

So the Bill Willingham Steph post crossed my dash again and got me wondering... if you're a writer, what IS the best way to respond to fans (singular or group) that publicly call out your writing at a con? Obviously you shouldn't wish violence on them but since it's not like you can un-write the story, do you ignore them? Change the subject? Argue back?
I mean, I can't pretend to know the BEST way to handle a volatile question in a public space, when saying nothing is not an option.
But I also want to challenge the idea that fans were "calling out [Willingham's] writing," because that wasn't what they were doing. Sure, plenty of people said he was a hack online. But at cons, what they were asking was "Why doesn't Steph have a memorial case?"
I always hammer that point home because it's so astonishing to me now. We didn't want them to bring Steph back from the dead. We just wanted them to memorialize her fairly. We were asking for crumbs, and it infuriated Willingham and DC Editorial. To the point that when they did bring Steph back by revealing Leslie Thompson had faked Steph's death, Tim goes "So that's why she didn't have a memorial case!" They would rather have her alive than give a bunch of (mostly) female fans the tiny bit of fairness they had been asking for. It's just mind-boggling to me now how little we were willing to settle for and how angry it still made DC.
Anyway, the decision to kill Steph was editorially mandated, and the decision not to give her a case was also editorially mandated - neither of those were Willingham's decision to make. (The other objection fans had, the sexualized depiction of Black Mask torturing Steph, was also not Willingham's fault - that was artist Jon Proctor.) Now, obviously Willingham couldn't just say "Not my fault, ask DC" because throwing his employer under the bus would not have been good for his career. But DC also shouldn't have hung him out to dry.
I think ideally with any controversial storyline, the publisher should have a discussion with the creators about the best way to handle questions so that everyone is on the same page. But what happens instead is that creators (underpaid freelancers who are almost all in precarious financial circumstances) bear the full brunt of any anger, blame, or harassment, and the publishers (massive corporations*) get to ignore it.
Of course, in Willingham's case, he was not harassed, but asked a polite question ("Why doesn't Steph have a memorial case?") that he probably could have easily said was up to DC without getting in trouble. But instead he chose to publicly fantasize about committing violence against real women, because he was annoyed. So that's DEFINITELY not the answer.
So in conclusion: in general publishers should step up more, in specific Willingham is a fucking douche.
-
*When I say "massive corporations" I'm talking specifically about DC and Marvel, who are owned by Warner Bros and Disney respectively. Image is not a massive corporation. Also, DC Comics and Marvel Comics are in tricky positions because they are actually small, weirdly ramshackle legacy publishers who in a lot of ways still operate like they did when Marvel had two (2) actual employees, Stan Lee and his secretary Flo Steinberg. They operate on tiny margins, everyone who works there is criminally underpaid, their HR is a fucking joke... So like, none of this excuses editors for repeatedly not supporting their creators during times of controversy (THE FUCKING MOCKINGBIRD COVER, Chelsea Cain is a TERF but that shit was ridiculous), but I think it's also important to remember that when we're talking about the people editing these books on a monthly basis, we're not talking about Bog Iger or David Zaslav - we're talking about someone living in NYC or Burbank working 60 hour weeks on a $45K salary so that Disney has enough IP to make Guardians of the Galaxy 9 or whatever. It's complicated.

Opinion: How to tell your boss about problem behavior at work without being labeled as the ‘difficult coworker’

Opinion: How to tell your boss about problem behavior at work without being labeled as the ‘difficult coworker’
Tumblr media
It would be great if we got along with everyone we worked with, but the reality is that we’ve all been on a team or in an organization with someone (or several people) who we find difficult, perhaps even toxic. These people not only make work unpleasant but there are physiological and emotional costs to toiling alongside them. Georgetown University professor Christine Porath’s research on incivility shows that the greatest impact is often to the person who is being mistreated.
There can also be a financial toll to dealing with difficult people. This is, in part, because the energy it takes often means you have less time and fewer cognitive resources to focus on your career. But it’s also because there’s a risk that, in calling out a colleague’s challenging behavior, you get labeled as the “difficult person.” And when you’re seen as “part of the problem” or someone who is “making waves,” you’re more likely to miss out on opportunities like raises and promotions — or even get fired.
Take, for example, Clara (not her real name), who was brought into a small manufacturing company to revamp their HR department only to find out that one of the company’s partners had no interest in changing. He consistently put down her ideas and accused her of not knowing what she was doing. When she raised the issue with his co-owners, they dismissed her concerns and told her “that’s just the way he is.” After several months of this, she was asked to accept a severance package because the owners didn’t think the “friction was solvable.” As Clara explained “my ‘complaining’ about this owner made me seem like a target and part of the problem.”
Bringing up concerns can be a particularly risky endeavor if you’re a member of an underrepresented group and you’re calling out difficult behavior that is related to bias. This is why it’s so critical that allies speak up.
This doesn’t mean you need to, or should, stay quiet. On the contrary, you can find productive ways to address your colleague’s behavior and escalate issues when necessary — but only to people you know are motivated and skilled enough to do something about the situation. Here’s how to protect yourself:
1. Clearly assess the risks: Pointing out hostile or rude behavior could impact your relationships and standing with your coworkers or boss, your performance reviews, job assignments, or even whether you keep your job. Develop a realistic picture of the danger you’re facing, while also considering the risks of not saying something. What are the consequences of staying silent? Perhaps not speaking up would violate your personal values or by letting the behavior pass, you appear as if you condone it. Or maybe you’re experiencing mental and physical symptoms from the stress, and not speaking up would only exacerbate those.
2. Document transgressions: It’s helpful to have a record of bad behavior, especially if you need to make the case to those in power. When your colleague oversteps, note the time, place, and what was said or done. Don’t just record their actions, write down what you said and did in response. Leaders will be more willing to intervene if they see a pattern of behavior and know that you — and perhaps others — have already taken steps to address it.
3. Choose who you raise the issue with carefully: Ideally, you want to go to someone who has the power and skills to do something, whether that’s your boss or another manager who can provide you with advice, give direct feedback to the difficult coworker, or reprimand them. Who is the right person or department to go to? Your boss? Your boss’s boss? An HR representative? Will they be open to helping you? Will they be discreet? Do they have the skills to give your difficult colleague feedback? Are they sufficiently motivated to take action?
Before approaching someone who you think fits the bill, look into how they’ve responded to comparable situations in the past. Did they give good advice? Did they follow through if they offered assistance? Did they make things better, or perhaps worse? The answers to these questions will help you decide whether it’s a good idea to escalate or not.
Back up your claims
It helps to tie the problems to concrete business results. Articulate how the person is damaging the team’s performance and provide plenty of evidence to back up your claims (this is where your documentation will help). It’s more convincing if your account of events can be corroborated, so confirm that others have witnessed the negative behavior and are willing to stand with you if need be.
Sometimes your endeavors to involve higher-ups might backfire or boundaries you clearly set are violated anyway. In those cases, it’s time to batten down the hatches and focus on protecting yourself and your career. Remember: Whether you’re just starting to address the negativity or you’ve been trying to change things for years, your health and well-being should always be a priority.

Not to be morbid on main, but everyone dies and people are rarely prepared for it. It’s so much easier when you know your loved one’s wishes. So even if you’re a teenager or twenty-three and healthy, I hope this helps you start thinking about end-of-life wishes, because it can happen to us all (both the dying and, rudely, being died upon).
Cremations are an affordable way to subvert the funeral industry, but going this route puts the burden of “the little things” on the family. I’ve learned a lot in the last 36 hours and wanted to pass those things that weren’t on any checklists, because the burden is on you to navigate the process.
Putting this under a cut because it’s so long (although not comprehensive). Obviously some of this is altered because COVID and some is meant to be applicable in some distant, theoretical future when we can go out to lunch again.
Before you die
Think about it, talk about it, write it down
Think about what kind of rememberance you want, if any. If it doesn’t matter, tell people that so they don’t fret about it and grieve in whatever way works best for them.
Communicate now to save your family and friends angst later.
Build an “in case of death” binder, zip drive, google doc with links, etc. Make sure your passwords are up to date so that’s not an administrative nightmare for your loved ones.
Advanced directives. Here’s a great article explaining the types of medical advanced directives and decisions to make before an accident or illness happens, including whether you want to donate your organs.
We lost grandma for about twenty minutes yesteday because we couldn’t find the paperwork and grandpa couldn’t remember where they signed up for services. Death. Binder. Have a death binder/folder/zip drive so no one loses grandma.
Insurance.
You likely have insurance through work, so consider that. It will also expire if you leave your job.
You can usually get, with minimal fuss, a 10- or 20-year term policy with enough to cover your arrangements and debts for less than $20 a month. Death expenses are anywhere from $5-$20k, conservatively.
Talk to your auto insurance agent and score a multi-line discount.
Body snatchers.
If you want to be cremated, talk to a local crematory beforehand and give them your basic information. It can be paid out of your estate (i.e. by your family or a life insurance policy) when it happens.
Most funeral homes (I believe) require pre-payment. It’s super morbid but there are TONS of heavily discounted grave sites for sale on Craigslist if that’s the route you want to go.
Here’s a list of certified green burial sites in the US.
Donating your body to science 101.
Memorial service.
The idea of a “proper” funeral is more or less out the window, especially in the time of COVID. Celebration of life? Religious ceremony (or not)? A picnic at your favorite park? Anything goes, so figure it out now.
When my sister-in-law died, we had a celebration of life at a non-profit who donated the space and had a poker tournament with her ash tin (she lost).
Whether you have strong or no preferences, write that down to guide decision-making.
Memorials.
Traditionally people would donate money in the event of a death to a charity, foundation, or family account, or flowers to a funeral home or church.
Family accounts (like for children) are traditionally done in care of the deceased’s bank but online fundraisers are a thing.
If you have a particular charity you love, add this to your list of wishes.
Food.
Before COVID it was pretty typical for there to be some kind of meal after a funeral. Will this be a restaurant?
This is ultimately up to the family but if you have strong preferences (i.e. no church or Italian food), tell people now.
Obituary.
Writing down the basic facts of your life, hobbies, and accomplishments you want included in your obituary means your family doesn’t have to do a guessing game.
Plants, animals, stuff, etc.
Do you want your clothes to go to a specific charity?
Do you NOT want your stuff to go to a specific charity? (Goodwill is terrible!)
Who will get your car (person, donate, sell)? Want to have your record collection to go one sister? Obviously family will divvy up stuff how they like, but write down any special considerations.
Have a plan for your pets (insurance, vet info, guardianship).
Please organize and digitize your photos if they aren’t already.
If you lose someone close:
Identify the primary griever
Support that person/those people by providing feedback when solicited, running errands as needed, and running interference so they aren’t inundated with all the little things.
Notifying people
Use the phone tree method. Great Aunt M will be happy to help by calling your cousins. Your boss, coworkers and HR. Your mom’s best friend/your adoptive aunt, your mom’s bunco group.
Ask that family not put anything on social media until the principal people are informed. I found out my grandpa died on facebook!
Esp these days, set boundaries for visits (who, where, and in what capacity).
Designate one person to be the primary contact for extended family to keep the burden off the primary griever(s).
Give this persons’ information when the first phone calls are made. It also makes sense for this person to be the travel coordinator.
This person should have a good handle on family dynamics (i.e. my aunt is flying in and would drive my grandma nuts so she’s staying with Mom).
This should be their only task because it’s time consuming.
Food
When people die, people gather, even in the time of COVID. Be responsible but expect a ton of drop by food. Clean out the primary griever’s fridge in anticipaton.
Organization
Start a shared family Google doc or sheet. Consolidate to do lists, anecdotes, important contact information, questions and inquiries, etc.
Pay to have the houses of anyone hosting (gatherings, people coming in from out of town, etc.) cleaned. Or, delegate. This can be an act of service for someone who wants to help and doesn’t mind doing the work.
Find the death binder (hopefully), legal documentation, etc. Get a folder or binder for papers if one doesn’t exist. And start a shared google doc for loved ones to track everything.
Delegate
I know I have said this three times, but it’s important. If you’re a primary decision maker do not be the primary do-er. My mom is the primary decision maker so my sisters and I are doing literally everything else.
Say YES when people ask if they can help you. Look at your running list of to-dos and say yes.
Pay to have the houses of people who are hosting cleaned. It will seriously be such a life saver, or this can be an act of service for someone who wants to help.
Social media
You will need to decide what to do with a person’s social media. Do you start a tribute page? Turn their facebook (if they’re old) into a tribute page for a time? Indefinitely? Things to think about.
Thank yous
Keep a running list of people to thank after via hand-written thank you notes. The link includes guidelines on
who should receive a thank you note (gave flowers, brought food, made donations, helped with arrangements or the service(s), did readings, or went well out of their way to warm your heart or show up)
when to send them (ideally 2-3 weeks after the funeral)
here’s how to write them (it doesn’t matter if you buy fancy, ones or dollar store ones, make sure they’re hand written).
Receipts.
Don’t be the petty biatch your cousins hate, but do save significant receipts to be reimbursed by the estate. (I.e. catering hundreds of dollars of food, paying $250 for programs and thank-you cards like I just did, etc.)
Service.
You will have a million decisions to make including
what kind of service to hold, if any
where to hold it
costs
hymns, readings, and anecdotes to share
who will be pall bearers, readers, vocalists, and give eulogies
Crematories handle cremation only, not the service details.
you will need photo boards (Hobby Lobby has nice black foamcore ones) or a powerpoint (and a way to display it depending on the venue)
a guest or memorial book
a card basket,
memorial cards, possibly programs, and thank you cards
Officiants, musicians, religious institutions, etc. all need to be paid (and tipped) for their time.
If we ever wrangle this pandemic, donating funeral flowers to a nursing homes is a fantastic way to brighten residents’ days.
Obituary.
Obituaries are expected, but traditionally costly ($200-$800). As part of the publishing fee, most newspapers keep the obituary on legacy.com indefinitely.
A funeral home will assist you with this, but the burden will be on you and your loved ones if using other methods.
These take hours to write and many hands does not make light work. Keep it to 2-4 key people. Having the facts laid out will help, and so will looking at other obituaries. I read a great tip which was to write about your loved one in present tense first, then change the tense before submission.
Newspapers will update your spelling and grammar but that’s about it. Cheaper alternatives:
Death notice which gives age, date and location of death, and who is handling funeral arrangements. Our crematory put in the death notice for us because they had her body, but the requirements on this likely vary state-to-state.
Here is a place to put a free online obituary.
Plants, animals, stuff, etc.
Save the plants and pets.
Household misc. are usually not dictated by the will, except in special circumstances or contested items. Closest members will go through possessions first. Voice early if you want something in particular, but understand that you may not get it. That’s ok.
Going through someone’s life is an overwhelming process. You may be repulsed and sad and overwhelmed and amused, all at the same time.
In deciding what to keep, as I’ve now cleared out three houses, I’ve found that quality over quantity is the way to go. The sweet spot? 1-2 sentimental + useful things. My great grandmother’s thimble and juicer? Use them all the time, and I remember her lemonade.
It’s okay to throw away some keepsakes and let things get thrown out or donated, depending on the thing.
Don’t give into guilt if you don’t want the china your Aunt Karen is pressuring you into taking when she doesn’t want it either.
Legal stuff.
If someone dies, there will be all kinds of legal things you will need to do (bank accounts, utilities, debtors, education, etc.), investments or 401k, etc.
This varies too much by state and circumstance to talk about in depth but there are guides to specifically help you.
If someone you love has lost someone they love
Do not give platitudes or ask if they’re ok
Don’t expect a response from someone grieving
Do send a card! It’s so thoughtful. I keep a stack of blank condolence cards and a set of forever stamps in my closet. It doesn’t have to be a $20 card to be special.
Don’t judge someone by how they grieve
Offer specific, actionable help if you’re close enough to give it
I am going to come over and clean at 10, leave the house unlocked
I’m at the store and am going to buy cheap vodka unless you tell me what kind of wine you want
oops I got you an uber eats gift card in your gmail sorry/not sorry
Buy thank you cards with stamps as a condolence gift, depending on the person and situation
Send a plant instead of a bouquet of flowers
Make a donation in the loved one’s name if you have the funds
If the grieving person is someone super close (best friend, sister, etc.) add the date in your recurring calender so you can check up on them this day next year with a card and/or phone call

Global Investment Bank Malaysia’s Professionalism In The Workplace: A Guide
If you are beginning your first internship or have several years of professional knowledge, how you portray yourself to people at work is essential. We at Global Investment Bank Malaysia  Malaysia are here to help you cultivate a professional attitude necessary for developing new connections and having a pleasant, successful work environment.
Make an Excellent First Impression People generally establish opinions about people in minutes of visiting them. Therefore, according to Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher Chan's latest study on Professionalism In The Workplace, it is necessary to show oneself professionally. Be conscious of your facial expressions and how others might interpret that. Standing upright, maintaining eye contact, and smiling are essential guidelines to follow. Ensure you're familiar with the workplace uniform policy and standards before you go. Finally, show up on time for important meetings and be ready.
What Exactly Is Professionalism? “At Global Investment Bank Malaysia, our researchers  have established that professionalism generally consists of actions, goals, or attributes that distinguish or designate a profession and a professional individual." Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher Chan mentioned. She also stated that the way you hold yourself, your mindset, and how you engage with people all contribute to your level of professionalism.
For example, employees who are honest, dress the part, & stay cool, calm, and collected are often considered professional. Whether it is your first job or not, there is no justification for being unprofessional. At Global Investment Bank Malaysia, we believe in striving for punctuality, politeness and all attributes that embody professionalism.
On-the-Job Professionalism “Working like a professional provides a favorable first impression, effective interpersonal interactions, and a long-lasting reputation. Time management efficient communication, excitement, task delivery, and proper dressing are critical parts of on-the-job professionalism," adds Global Investment Bank Malaysia scholar Chan.
Maintain Your Cool When Under Pressure It is normal to get upset when things go wrong at the workplace. Still, demonstrate to your coworkers or colleagues that you can hold your cool when need be. According to the Get’em In Business Malaysia’s scholar guidance, your coworkers are more likely to follow a similar attitude that helps them effectively manage stress. It could also come in handy the next time your company is affected by a nightmare.
Instead of working harder, work wiser At Global Investment Bank Malaysia Malaysia, we believe that if you are not already searching for methods to improve your productivity at work, you should make it a priority this year. Trust it or not, entrepreneurs are not only folks like Steve Jobs who turn an industry on its head. Therefore it is imperative that you work wiser, smarter and not harder.
"Let your manager know if you have proposals that might help things operate more efficiently and improve the workplace! They will probably like it, and putting it in place might make everyone's work easier," says Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher Liza Chan.
Recognize when you have made a mistake According to a Global Investment Bank Malaysia scholar, a successful leader is someone others can connect to and respect. An intelligent way to do that is to own up to errors rather than glossing over them or blaming others. When you show your group that you are prepared to accept responsibility when things go wrong, they will be less scared of making errors and more accountable especially when venturing beyond their comfort zones.
Email professionalism According to Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher Chan, after you have mastered the basic format of an email and know how to avoid common blunders, it is time to concentrate on letting your drafts stand out from the slew of emails many individuals receive every day. Here are three ideas to help you get to the next level:
Keep a positive attitude Sending a bad and even neutral email might put you in a difficult situation. As with any textual connectivity, there is the possibility of a misunderstanding. However, Liza, a Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher, argues that "in the lack of further evidence, our judgment typically goes to the bad."
In addition, a Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher said When it comes to unpleasant communication, the tone of voice, the sparkle in your eyes, the great humor with which you intend anything, or even the genuine compassion with which you are delivering feedback are all missing pieces of info.  So be extremely watchful. When you interpret anything as negative, it is likely to come across as much more harmful to someone else.
Make Each Interaction a One-of-a-Kind Experience You don't want to have an email addressed to "Dear [customer]" when you're really in sales. According to Global Investment Bank Malaysia researchers, such an email immediately suggests that the sender is mass mailing you. Likewise, double-check that each email you send is customized for the receiver and that you are sending it to the required recipient.
Even while it may be attractive to utilize templates, it is critical to customize the message and consider the recipient's communication style before sending it. A fast search on Google or a look at the sender's LinkedIn & Twitter feed may help you do this. Put yourself in the recipient's shoes to get a sense of their tone.
Follow Up – Promptly If you write an email, you are probably hoping for a quick answer. However, with the vast number of emails that most individuals go through each day, a quick response is unlikely to be a given. Therefore, a follow-up communication should never arrive sooner than twenty-four hrs after the original email has been sent.
In other words, do not be the individual who makes a follow-up request two hrs after sending it, according to Global Investment Bank Malaysia researchers. In difficult situations, this kind of action may result in you being blocked. "When you take more time and care about the individual on the other end of the mail, you will notice a considerably greater response rate almost instantly.”
Social Media Professionalism “Social media is here to stay, whether you like it or not. It is also the perfect location to establish your brand. Recruiters and HR experts check for red flags like poor language and indicators of drug usage that would indicate you would be a less-than-ideal male or female to have in their offices," Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher Liza explains.
She also mentioned that taking notice of these elements will capture the eye of your supervisor or prospective employer when you consider professionalism on social networks.
Facebook According to the Global Investment Bank Malaysia scholar, hiring managers focus on two aspects of your Facebook profile: your biography and picture albums.
"They will want to examine how you characterize yourself and whether it fits what you said in your resume and cover letter," Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher Chan adds. Thus, any irregularities before the interview might cost you points. Furthermore, according to Liza, they also search for good grammar and spelling in this part to check how keen you are on language.
According to Global Investment Bank Malaysia researcher Chan, "A recruiting manager will be examining not just your pictures but also your descriptions when it comes to your picture albums. A recruiting manager wants to see how professionally you handle yourself. You will want to avoid utilizing profanity, sexual, or adult themes.”
Twitter Who do you follow: According to Global Investment Bank Malaysia analyst Liza, recruiters want to check whether you have any shared connections with individuals in your sector.
Recruiters will look at your tweets to determine whether you give valuable information, provide information related to your profession, or if you use tweets for social media wars. So if you are seeking a job, review your Twitter history and consider eliminating anything that does not portray you in the best — and most thoughtful — light.
Instagram According to Global Investment Bank Malaysia researchers, recruiters will look at the following you acquire. They will also be interested in seeing how kind and sociable you appear to be with your fans. How you respond to them might also provide their insight into your connections and whether you would be a decent cultural fit for the company.
So what about pictures? I'm sure you worked it out by now. On the other hand, recruiters are searching for more than just your photographic capabilities (or lack thereof). They will be looking to see how you portray yourself. Do you respectfully express yourself? Do you publish anything that others would deem inappropriate? These are some of the tips Global Investment Bank Malaysia  researchers encourage each individual to look into.
LinkedIn Posts: No one will employ you if your CV states you are a "contentious worker." According to our Global Investment Bank Malaysia search engine, common writing errors, particularly on LinkedIn, might harm your professional image. Even on more friendly social networks, taking the time to proofread might show that you are a dedicated worker. Getting your language perfection might be the difference between being hired or staying jobless.
If your LinkedIn profile indicates you have worked in finance for three years, but your Facebook page has a photo of you in a Starbucks uniform from last year, that is a major red flag. Lying about your expertise or credentials is never a brilliant idea, particularly when you have the Internet to back you up. On your résumé, tell the truth, and make sure your social media accounts reflect that.
Final Word Finally, Global Investment Bank Malaysia scholar Chan, shared her last thoughts on Professionalism In The Workplace, stating that everyone in the work environment feels valued and has an equal desire for respect. As a result, appropriate professional conduct will contribute to an excellent workplace while also affecting one's image and job success.

Hi! I'm a high schooler considering majoring in creative writing, and I was wondering if there are any tips, pros and cons, advice, etc. you could give since you teach it? :3
Ahhh, I’m excited to get asks like this because I love to hear that people want to major in creative writing–nowadays there’s such a heavy emphasis on STEM careers, and poor English is so often ignored… But I hope I can do this response justice. Please keep in mind that I can only share my own experiences and that the path I’ve taken may not work for everyone!
I guess if you’re in the “considering” stage, the number one thing I would suggest is that you ask yourself two things:
1) What is my “absolute” goal? If I could score my dream job at the end of college, what would that look like?
2) What am I willing to consider doing instead if I don’t score my dream job at the end? What other related careers could I enjoy?
If you’re considering creative writing as a career, your likely end goal is to become a professional writer and make a living off your writing, right? (Some people treat that like a pipe dream, but it’s no less likely, and in fact sometimes far more likely, than any other creative career.) But becoming a writer who is well-known enough to live off your advances and royalties will likely take you a significant amount of time–even if you are published, especially in the early years, you may not be earning enough from your books to pay the bills all by yourself. (If you’ve got a supportive significant other that has a high-paying job, by all means, get them to pay the bills while you build up your writing fan base–then you can repay later when you’re rolling in royalties!)
But you will, at least at first, very likely need to ask yourself: What am I willing to do as a day job?
And I think the answer to that question is really what determines whether or not you should pursue a creative writing degree.
A degree in creative writing is one of the most versatile college degrees you can get. (Certainly I’m biased, but there do seem to be certain degrees that are simply more applicable to a wider field of career options–someone who gets a degree in sculpting can sculpt, for example, but I’m not sure about its applicability beyond that.)
English, like math, is a broad enough type of degree that it achieves some “universality.” A huge, huge number of careers require strong writing and communication skills. English degrees can get you into law school, into marketing and content-writing careers, into teaching careers, into office jobs, into HR and PR positions, into management, and essentially into any position in which writing will be a major component. Demonstrated ability to write well and clearly is a golden ticket to many jobs because it is a skill that many people lack. Even people who might otherwise be better qualified for a technical position can still end up rejected in favor of people who are able to express their skills in a more professional manner!
So getting an English degree/having creative writing for your emphasis is a far, far safer career choice than many people will lead you to believe.
But just because the degree can apply to many fields doesn’t always mean it’s the best degree for those fields–the “jack of all trades” saying is applicable here. There are certain careers that English degrees feed into very well, and others where you’ll have to stretch things a little. So, another question:
Are you interested in any of the following?
Teaching
Writing content/reviews for products or websites
Handling correspondence, such as managing emails for a business
Creating and managing social media accounts
Tutoring/Proof-reading for pay
Technical writing (someone has to write all our user manuals after all)
Managing records or handling public relations
If so, you can probably sign up for a creative writing degree with no real worries. Case closed, problem solved. XD
But if none of that stuff looks remotely interesting to you, you might want to take a deep breath and think about your other options (of which the following are just some):
Skip an undergraduate degree in creative writing specifically, but plan on studying writing in graduate school, such as through an MFA program (a bit difficult but not uncommon)
Double major in creative writing and another field where the day jobs interest you more (difficult but very useful)
Skip formal education for creative writing entirely and go it on your own to become a great writer (not ideal, but also not totally impossible)
Having a creative writing Bachelor’s degree can help you on your way to becoming a professional writer. But it isn’t a requirement to become a great author–in fact, many authors never formally studied creative writing before writing their great novels (Kurt Vonnegut was in science; Ernest Hemingway was a journalist before a novelist, etc.). If day jobs in other fields interest you more, pursuing a degree there doesn’t mean you’ll never write and publish your great novel.
Nor will skipping a creative writing Bachelor’s degree block you from ever studying creative writing later on: in my MFA program, only three of the seven of us in the poetry track had undergraduate English degrees. It is possible to earn an undergraduate degree in a totally different field and then still go on to study creative writing later if you decide that writing on your own isn’t working.
Furthermore, you’re not locked into certain classes at most colleges–you could take a creative writing minor or simply take writing classes as part of your electives, and still get the benefits of the education, while earning a different degree where the day jobs interest you more.
As a personal aside, when I was an undergraduate student, I was very nervous about my ability to succeed in the writing field, and so I decided to go the double major route, with English as my “fun” degree and criminal justice as my “pay the bills” degree. Ironically, almost a decade later, here I am, paying my bills with my “fun” degree. I rarely use my criminal justice degree as anything more than a party trick (people really love to talk about murder). But studying two subjects gave both myself and my family relief, and I did learn many, many things that would later appear in my writing, so I have no regrets.
Basically, what I’m getting at here is: When you think about how you’re going to be paying your bills for 5-10 years after college, what careers can you see yourself doing other than writing fiction/poetry? If none of the things you imagine line up with the “easy to get” English degree careers, that’s a sign that maybe you should at least consider studying something else and just take your writing classes on the side instead. (Or double major, if you’re a masochist like me lol.)
Ultimately, I’m not enough of an optimist to tell you that you should blindly follow your passion for writing and assume it will all work out–the basic fact is you’ll almost inevitably need a day job, at least for a while, and that’s what I think the deciding factor in your major should be.
Nevertheless, one of the biggest hang-ups I hear from people thinking about majoring in writing is that they are worried the degree will be worthless, and that simply isn’t true. Almost all my friends from college were English majors (we flock together) and all of my English major friends are gainfully employed–none of us are homeless or starving or still living off our parents. Some of us might have better jobs (I’m not going to brag–lol jk yes I am–with my professor’s salary I own two houses and am two months from completely paying off my gorgeous 2SS RS Camaro), but essentially every English major I know is doing well for him- or herself. (This may not be everyone’s story though–I’m sure some others have struggled; I just don’t know them.)
The longest time I was ever unemployed since earning my creative writing degree was a period of four months after grad school, when I moved back to southern California and realized the job market there was horrific. THAT SAID, even during my four-month job search, I took an internship at a refugee and immigration center and got the opportunity to help people literally escape human trafficking rings and modern-day slavery, so that was one of the most amazing experiences of my life.I haven’t always liked the jobs I’ve had, but I’ve never felt afraid of not having enough money to feed or house myself since leaving college with a creative writing degree.
You can do perfectly well for yourself with a degree in writing. I wouldn’t even call it a risky choice, at this point. So if that’s the sticking point in your decision to major in writing–that part I wouldn’t worry too much about.
As for advice… ah, this post is really long already. If you want some advice about what to look for in schools you apply to, or what to do if you do decide on creative writing as your major, send me another message and I’ll try to whip something up.
Hope this is what you were looking for!

Doki Doki Literature Club! (PC)
Tumblr media
youtube
MWUHAHAHAHA!
Welcome boys and ghouls to a special Shocktober spooky edition of my blog!  Since the beginning of this Tumblr, I’ve gone out of my way to play a scary game to get into the Halloween spirit and this year is no exception!  So I played the dating sim Doki Doki Literature Club!*
*Exclamation point is included in the title and should not be interpreted as off-putting eagerness on my part to play a dating sim featuring cute, almost certainly underage anime girls.  Thank you.
Those of you who don’t spend nearly every waking minute on the internet like I do may at this point be wondering, “Craig, have you lost your goddamn mind?  How is a dating sim creepy beyond the fact that you’re playing it?”  First of all, calling this game a “dating sim” is grossly inaccurate, even though it does share some attributes, specifically the mechanic of choosing the correct dialogue options in order to win the heart of whichever anime chick has the least irritating quirk.  As a matter of fact, calling this a “game” is rather inaccurate too, as it is more of an interactive novel.
Doki Doki Literature Club!, developed and published by Team Salvato in 2017, casts you as Japanese teenage boy who gets pressured by his best friend Sayori to join an after school literature club.  At first reluctant, your nameless protagonist eventually caves in when he realizes the club is comprised of only girls, which would give him the perfect opportunity to perhaps meet someone and “boof” her, as current SCOTUS nominee Tim Kavanaugh would say.
Okay okay that was a low blow - the intentions of your sexually repressed teenage protagonist are probably not quite as depraved as a choleric Supreme Court judge chosen by an orange toddler president.
The other members of the club are Yuri, a shy Goth girl; Natsuki, a sassy Freshman; and Monika, the straight-laced, control freak club president.  What little actual gameplay there is involves writing a poem every night and choosing words that you think a particular girl in the club would like.  For example, if you choo-choo-choose Yuri (which I did because I feel like she’d be into horror movies), then the words you’d select for each poem would revolve around dark, dreary Goth subjects like “graveyard”, “melancholy”, “spiral”, etc.  Little kawaii representations of each girl will jump in approval for each selection so you get an idea of what words please which girl.
This goes on for what feels like an “eternity” (another Yuri word) before the first event occurs that makes you realize... this ain’t a normal game.  I don’t want to spoil anything though, because the only point to playing Doki Doki at all is to experience the twists and turns yourself, but suffice it to say, shit gets REAL.  Then the game starts fucking with you, descending into “creepy pasta” territory (for better or worse), ultimately leading to a clever climax that the game is just short enough (not to mention cheap enough i.e. it’s free to play) to be worth reaching.
In some ways, Doki Doki reminds me of other subversive, though much more entertaining and clever, games like Frog Fractions.  It’s a deconstruction of the dating sim, designed to make the player feel bad for thinking of teenage girls as trophies to be won through calculated manipulation.  It’s not as preachy as I make it sound, but it’s not exactly subtle either, with each girl’s “quirk” that presumably appeals to the player slowly escalating to the point of ideally making you feel guilty.  It’s entirely possible this was never the intent of the developer and I’m emotionally projecting.
Either way, Doki Doki is an interesting novelty, but I would only recommend it to the very, very patient.  In order to fully experience the game, I would also encourage you to play it with headphones (as sound design is a major part of the creepy effects in the later half of the game).  Also, play the game like I did - at your desk during lunch break, constantly nervous the game will throw you an unexpected hentai sex curve ball right as a co-worker walks by, causing you to have to visit HR (again) and get lectured about visiting inappropriate sites on your work computer.

Finding the Ideal Position
Play to your strengths by focusing on a position where you will utilize your skills in the best way possible.
Determine what you value in the workplace.
Balance human behavior and business acumen.
Determine what your transferable skills are.
Understand what your “zone of genius” is.
Resumes Have Changed
Many people have what is called the “autobiography syndrome.” In other words, they put their whole work history, in great detail, on their resume.
Your resume should not be set up like life story, Wikipedia page. Rather, view it as a sales document. It is designed to sell you, not be written like the next great American novel.
In many cases, less is more. But the content you include needs to tell a compelling story. To learn more on how to develop your resume, search for great positions and interview, be sure to visit www.madelinemann.com
Utilize the power of you LinkedIn profile to showcase your expertise. LinkedIn is a powerful platform that is very underutilized by many job seekers. Not sure what to do? Visit Madeline’s website to enroll in the FREE LinkedIn Webinar.
Reverse Engineer
As you build your profile and your resume, think in terms of the end result. What type of position do you want to secure? Based on your personal and professional values, what companies are a fit for you and of course, you for them.
Reverse engineer the process with the end in mind and aspects of your career and personality that support your desire for a specific type of position. Focus on the type of role you want to contribute to.
Showcase Personal Interests and Passions
In the past, job seekers were taught to keep their personal life personal. Today, your hobbies, interests and passions can play in your favor. For example, if you are passionate about animal rescue, and have been involved with a sanctuary on a volunteer basis, this can play in your favor in the job search. Especially if animal welfare is important to the organization. If it’s a vegan organization, there’s a solid chance animal welfare will be important.
Research is Worth Its Weight in Gold
Learn as much as you can about the position you are targeting. As well, research organizations you have in mind because the position may be a great fit, but the way the job is set up may not be. For example, if you’re seeking a position that allows you to work closely with a team and the position is remote, the position may not be a fit.
Or, if being home at night with your family to enjoy dinner together is important, but the position require you be on sales calls into the late evening due to time zone differences between you and company clients, this may not at all be a fit.
Connect Beyond the Profile
One of the best resources available to job seekers today is the ability to connect with high level executives on platforms like LinkedIn. Real connections can go far. Even if you don’t connect directly with the CEO or hiring manager, there may be others in the organization you can connect with; the very people you can build connections with who can help you move forward in the process.
Growth of Vegan and Plant Based Business
Over the last few years, there’s been substantial growth of vegan owned and operated companies. There is every indication that the vegan industries and markets will continue to grow, which puts vegan job seekers in a great position.
Never has there been a better time for people to find truly meaningful work.
More companies are focusing on what their mission actually means to their teams, the customers and clients, donors, and their local, national, and international position.  They are driven to promote lifestyles that promote high levels of sustainability.
If You’re in a Career Shift
If you’re planning on making a career change, start your process as soon as possible to determine what type of organization you want to join. What is the position that you would bring the most passion and contribution to? Set up your LinkedIn profile to showcase your attributes and experience as they pertain to the position you are interested in.
Connect, really connect, with people in the organizations you would be a great fit for. By “really connect” avoid sending out dozens of connection invitations without a personal note attached. Give a reason to the other person as to what motivated you to reach out.
Many people find this intimidating when it is actually about making friends and connecting.
Avoid randomly sending out your resume and do what Madeline refers to as the “Low Volume Job Search.” This is a proprietary process she teaches about how to be incredibly thoughtful with your approach. Nurture relationships because even if a dream company doesn’t have an opening that is a fit, the people you connect with may know of other companies that do.

What Republicans Voted Against The Repeal Of Obamacare
Latest Partial Repeal Effort Dies Before Deadline
A breakdown of the moment John McCain voted against repealing Obamacare
Another Senate attempt to repeal portions of the Affordable Care Act has ended, this time before going to a vote.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced a GOP-led health care bill would not go to a vote after three Republican senators said the bill did not have their support. In July, a similar partial-repeal effort died when Sens. John McCain, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against it.
The latest bill, spearheaded primarily by Sens. Bill Cassidy, R-La. and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., ;would have taken funding that is used under current law for Medicaid expansion and insurance subsidies and used it to fund block grants to states. A preliminary analysis by the Congressional Budget Office said the bill would have reduced the deficit by $133 billion by 2026 as well as resulted in millions more uninsured people compared to the current health care law.
McCain and Collins, along with Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., publicly voiced their opposition to the Graham-Cassidy bill.
Proponents of the bill only had a few weeks to gain enough support before a temporary process that allows health care legislation to pass in the Senate with 50 votes rather than the usual 60 ends on Sept. 30. Graham called it the GOP’s “best and only chance” to meet its goal of repealing Obamacare.
Until we see new movement on his promise to repeal Obamacare, we’ll continue to rate this Stalled.
Republicans Plan Healthcare Vote; Obama And Tv Host Denounce Bill
6 Min Read
WASHINGTON Senate Republicans announced plans to vote next week on their latest bid to scuttle Obamacare even as a popular comedian who has become part of the U.S. healthcare debate denounced the bill and former President Barack Obama on Wednesday warned of real human suffering.
President Donald Trump, who has expressed frustration at the Senates failure thus far to pass legislation dismantling Obamas signature legislative achievement, said 47 or 48 Republicans back the bill, which needs 50 votes for passage in the 100-seat Senate, which his Republican Party controls 52-48.
We think this has a very good chance, Trump, who made replacing Obamacare a top 2016 campaign promise, told reporters during an appearance with Egypts president in New York.
Kentucky Senator Rand Paul opposes the bill. At least five other Republicans are undecided on it: Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska, John McCain of Arizona and Jerry Moran of Kansas.
Republican Senator John Thune on Fox News said: Were a handful of votes short of having the 50 that we need.
As they worked to gather enough votes to win, after prior legislation failed in July, congressional Republicans and the White House were on the defensive after Jimmy Kimmel used his late-night TV show to blast the proposal and call Republican Senator Bill Cassidy, one of its two sponsors, a liar.

Republicans Have A Health Plan Finally
The House Republican Study Committee has come out with a viable plan.

For the past ten years Republicans in Congress have been largely AWOL on health care.
If memory serves, there has never been a hearing to showcase the victims of Obamacare. Nor has there been a hearing to show how sensible reforms could make the lives of those victims better.
When it came to legislation, the GOP only had two ideas: either abolish Obamacare entirely or toss it to the states. Neither approach actually solved a health care problem. They just allowed Republicans in Washington to wash their hands of the issue and pass the problems along to someone else.
Until now.
The House Republican Study Committee has accepted the challenge and delivered. In a 68-page document, it identifies the worse problems in our health care system and shows how they can be solved.
The proposals are bold, impactful and easy to understand. Here is a quick summary.
Personal and portable health insurance. In an ideal world, if people like the insurance they get from an employer, they would be able to take it with them from job to job and in and out of the labor market. Under the Obama administration, this practice was not only illegal, employers who bought individually owned insurance for their employees faced huge fines.

Republicans On The Affordable Care Act

In the 2012 Republican Part Platform, Republicans spoke out against the Affordable Care Act, stating that the Democrats used it more as an assertion of power than they used it to improve health care conditions in this country, and in doing so they detrimentally damaged the health of this nation. The Republican Party views the requirement for United States citizens to purchase health insurance as an attack on the Constitution. They believe that the financial burden it would bring upon the country, and specifically on individual states, through the expansion of Medicaid is unsustainable, and will harm the nation as a whole. The act was so firmly opposed by the Republican Party that not a single Republican voted for the final version that Obama signed into law.

What Now For Obamacare
There are not thought to be any further plans for a new bill to repeal Obamacare because the skinny repeal was seen as the only measure Republicans could get through Congress.
However, lawmakers could revive the issue and take it up later in the year.
Following the vote, President Trump tweeted: “As I said from the beginning, let ObamaCare implode, then deal.”
Mr Trump’s position on healthcare reform has varied – he has spoken out at various points for Obamacare being repealed, repealed and replaced, or being allowed to collapse by itself.
In his statement, Mr McCain said Obamacare was in a state of “collapse”, with healthcare premiums “skyrocketing” and providers “fleeing the marketplace”.
He criticised the way Obamacare had been passed by Democrats using their Obama-era majority and called for senators to “return to the correct way of legislating” with input from both parties.
“We must do the hard work our citizens expect of us and deserve,” he said.
But Texas Senator Ted Cruz insisted the fight was not over.
“Mark my words, this journey is not yet done,” he said.
Gop Senators Announce Final Chance For Obamacare Repeal
Republicans vote to repeal Obamacare
On the same day that Sen. Bernie Sanders introduced a single-payer health care bill, four senators on the Republican side of the aisle unveiled what they called their last attempt to roll back portions of the Affordable Care Act.
The bill, spearheaded by Sens. Bill Cassidy, R-La., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Dean Heller, R-Nev., and Ron Johnson, R-Wis., would replace federal funding currently being spent on Medicaid expansion, tax credits and subsidies with block grants, which state leaders could decide how to allocate. It would also end the medical device tax as well as Obamacare’s individual and employer mandates.
Graham, in reference to Obamacare repeal efforts, told congressional Republicans during a Sept. 13 press conference, “This is your best and only chance to make it happen.”
To pass the bill, the senators face a fleeting window of time. A temporary process that Republicans have been relying on to advance health care legislation in the Senate with 50 votes rather than the usual 60 votes will end on Sept. 30.
That process didn’t quite work on July 28, when a bill to repeal portions of Obamacare died on the Senate floor after Republican Sens. John McCain, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski voted against it.
President Donald Trump applauded the new bill in a statement released after the press conference.
The bill is not a full repeal of Obamacare.
It is not yet clear if the bill has enough votes to pass the Senate, so for now we continue to rate this promise Stalled.

Affordable Health Care For America Act
This article is part of a serieson
The Affordable Health Care for America Act was a that was crafted by the United States House of Representatives of the 111th United States Congress on October 29, 2009. The bill was sponsored by Representative Charles Rangel. At the encouragement of the Obama administration, the 111th Congress devoted much of its time to enacting reform of the United States health care system. Known as the House bill, HR 3962 was the House of Representatives chief legislative proposal during the health reform debate.
On December 24, 2009, the Senate passed an alternative health care bill, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act . In 2010, the House abandoned its reform bill in favor of amending the Senate bill rel=nofollow>reconciliation process) in the form of the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010.
Democrats Sought To Put Gop Colleagues On Record With Symbolic Vote
Democratic congressional campaigns have already made health care an early focus of their 2020 messaging, and House Democrats bolstered that effort Wednesday with a symbolic vote that sought to once again put Republicans on record on the issue.
Eight Republicans sided with Democrats on the nonbinding resolution, which the House adopted, 240-186.;The measure condemned;the Trump administrations support for invalidating the 2010 health care law in its entirety.;The Department of Justice, in a new filing last week, backed a Texas judges decision to strike down the law.;
Three Republicans; New Yorks;Tom Reed and John Katko and Pennsylvanias Brian Fitzpatrick had voted in January to authorize the House general counsel to intervene in the lawsuit to defend the health care law. All three also voted for the resolution Wednesday.
One Democrat 15-term Minnesota Rep. Collin C. Peterson bucked his party and voted against the resolution. Hes one of the last Democrats remaining in the House who opposed the 2010 health care law and is likely the last Democrat who can hold his heavily agricultural 7th District seat.
Democrats were otherwise united in supporting the resolution, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee launched positive Facebook ads touting their vulnerable members votes to protect families with pre-existing conditions.

Don’t Miss: What Is The Number Of Republicans And Democrats In Congress
First Steps To A Repeal Are Under Way In Congress
The quest to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act began even before Donald Trump was sworn in as president.
More than two weeks before Trump’s inauguration, the Senate made its first move, approving a procedural motion on Jan. 4 to start debate on a budget resolution.
Passing a budget resolution is a key step in repealing President Barack Obama’s signature health care law. It allows the Republican majority in Congress to repeal sweeping portions of the law with just 51 votes in the Senate. This process, known as reconciliation, saves the majority from having to round up the 60 votes required to break a filibuster — a much tougher challenge.
On Jan. 12, the Senate passed the budget resolution itself, 51-48. Every Democrat voted against it . The only Republican to cross party lines to vote with Democrats was Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who had expressed concerns about repealing the law without a replacement ready to go.
The budget resolution includes instructions that provide the tools necessary to repeal the law.
Among other things, it instructs the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to submit legislation to the Senate Budget Committee by Jan. 27.
Still, using reconciliation to repeal the Affordable Care Act has its challenges. While the ACA has a multitude of provisions, the reconciliation process can only address matters related to federal spending and taxes.
Still, this is enough to rate this promise In the Works.
Premium Subsidies And Affordability
Tumblr media
The ACAs premium subsidies were designed to keep health insurance affordable for people who buy their own coverage in the individual market. Premiums for individual market plans increased alarmingly in 2017 and 2018, although they were much more stable in 2019 and 2020, and rate changes for 2021 appear to be mostly modest. But premiums for people who arent eligible for premium subsidies can still amount to a substantial portion of their income.
The individual market is a very small segment of the population, however, and rate increases have been much more muted across the full population .
Democrats have proposed various strategies for making coverage and care affordable. Joe Bidens healthcare proposal includes larger premium subsidies that would be based on the cost of a benchmark gold plan and based on having people pay only 8.5% of their income for that plan . Bidens proposal would also eliminate the ACAs income cap for premium subsidy eligibility and provide subsidies to anyone who would otherwise have to pay more than 8.5% of their income for a benchmark gold plan. This would eliminate the subsidy cliff that currently exists for some enrollees.
The 2020 Democratic Party platform calls for a public option health plan that would compete with private health insurance carriers in an effort to bring down prices, and lowering the eligibility age for Medicare from 65 to 60.
Don’t Miss: What 10 Republicans Voted For Impeachment
How Many Republicans Voted For Obamacare
The Affordable Care Act, also called Obamacare, received no Republican votes in either the Senate or the House of Representatives when it was passed in 2009. In the Senate, the bill was passed with a total of 60 votes, or 58 Democratic Party votes and 2 Independent Party votes. The House passed the legislation with 219 Democratic votes.
The Affordable Care Act received 39 votes against it in the Senate, all from Republicans. One senator abstained from voting. In the House, the ACA received 212 votes against it, with 34 coming from the Democratic Party and 178 from the Republican Party. There were enough votes for the ACA in the Senate to prevent an attempt to filibuster the bill, while the House vote required a simple majority.
The ACA originated in the Senate, though both the House and Senate were working on versions of a health care bill at the same time. Democrats in the House of Representatives were initially unhappy with the ACA, as they had expected some ability to negotiate additional changes before its passage. Since Republicans in the Senate were threatening to filibuster any bill they did not fully support, and Democrats no longer had enough seats to override the filibuster, no changes could be made. Since any changes to the legislation by the House would require it to be re-evaluated in the Senate, the original version was passed in 2009 on condition that it would be amended by a subsequent bill.
Directive Ending Key Subsidy Threatens Obamacare’s Viability
After failing in several attempts to pass legislation overturning the Affordable Care Act, the Trump administration took a big step toward undercutting the law Oct. 12 when it said it would no longer continue funding a class of widely used subsidies without congressional appropriations.
The payments in question are known as “cost-sharing reductions.” They were intended to ease copayments and deductible costs for millions of low-income Americans who have purchased insurance coverage on the Affordable Care Act online marketplaces. The estimated cost of the payments was $9 billion next year and nearly $100 billion over the next decade.
The payments have been subject to a legal dispute since House Republicans sued in 2014, arguing that the Obama administration was improperly paying the subsidies when no money had been appropriated for that purpose by Congress. The House Republicans’ lawsuit was initially upheld in federal district court, but the case has continued to work its way through the courts.
In its announcement, the White House specifically cited the legal case as the reason for ending the payments. Insurers had been expecting a new round of payments on Oct. 18.
Health policy specialists agreed that the impact could be serious.
Experts said that lower-income Americans would be hurt the most by the change.
But ending the subsidies could have other indirect impacts, experts said.

Republicans Fail Again To Kill Off Obamacare In Senate
By Susan Cornwell
5 Min Read
WASHINGTON – U.S. Republicans on Tuesday fell short yet again in their seven-year drive to repeal Obamacare, in a bitter defeat that raises more questions about their ability to enact President Donald Trumps agenda.
The party was unable to win enough support from its own senators for a bill to repeal the 2010 Affordable Care Act and decided not to put it to a vote, several Republicans said. The bills sponsors vowed to try again, but face steeper odds after Sunday, when special rules expire that allow them to pass healthcare legislation without Democratic support.
We basically ran out of time, said Senator Ron Johnson, a co-sponsor of the measure with Senators Bill Cassidy, Lindsey Graham and Dean Heller.
Republicans have now repeatedly failed to deliver on their longtime promise to roll back former Democratic President Barack Obamas signature domestic accomplishment.
They have yet to achieve any major domestic policy successes in Congress this year, which could hurt their efforts to retain control of the Senate and House of Representatives in the November 2018 congressional elections.
Republicans widely view Obamacare, which provides coverage to 20 million Americans, as a costly government overreach. Trump vowed frequently during the 2016 election campaign to scrap it. Democrats have fiercely defended it, saying it has extended health insurance to millions.

AMP UP YOUR EMPLOYEE MONITORING ETHICS IN SIMPLE STEPS
Tumblr media
Employee monitoring is by far the most considerable method to keep track of employee activities during working hours. But does it interfere and disturbs the privacy of the employee? And is it even legal to monitor employees at the workplace? Even if it is legal, then to what extent is it considerable?
To clarify all these concerns, you need to have a closer look at the workplace monitoring ethics. You require to grab some ideas on how far it is ethical to manage the employees by keeping records. When workplace monitoring ethics comes into action, it is necessary to understand the tactics to do everything within the legal boundaries.
EMPLOYEE MONITORING AT WORKPLACE
Tumblr media
Employee monitoring is all over the place in 2021. We all know the reasons behind it. As the entire world is undergoing pandemic situations, employees get advised to work remotely. Now the managers must keep a check on their teams. All thanks to the technology. It introduced us to some of the best employee monitoring software that makes the entire process uncomplicated.
Monitoring includes various aspects to check and record the activities of employees. It incorporates features like screenshot monitoring, website and app usage monitoring, keyboard monitoring, and most importantly, productivity monitoring and management.
But yes, let me tell you, even if the higher authorities use various software to manage and monitor employees, everything goes behind the scenes. The employees remain unaware that they are getting monitored. But it is legal. Always keep this in consideration.
Monitoring employee activities and remembering their passwords do not go hand in hand. Employers own no right to trespass the employee’s personal information even if they have the reach to it. The entire goal of employee monitoring is to create a productive environment and not data breaching.
IS THERE SOMETHING CALLED INTENTIONAL UNETHICAL EMPLOYEE MONITORING?
Tumblr media
Higher authorities will never do something unethical. They never grow these intentions. But they always wish to protect all their business data and never want anyone to interfere. In turn, this sometimes goes off the track. At times the employers forget to consider the ethics of employee monitoring. And as we know that there are plenty of employee monitoring tools available, it also creates room for unethical monitoring.
Mostly the employers try to stay away from all these. But it creates significant trust issues within the employees. They think it might take up their personal information, and they end up losing interest in work. Demotivation, unproductivity, and distraction are all that it leaves behind. So, employers must have ethical employee monitoring and maintain trustworthiness.
WHY IS IT NECESSARY?
Tumblr media
If we consider the case of remote workers, they do not visit the traditional workplace regularly. So the managers must use an employee monitoring tool to monitor them. The device provides detailed reports of the activities of the employees throughout the working hours.
But if the remote employee works on the personal workstation, the employers get an opportunity to interrupt their personal information. So this might bring some concern within the remote employees. But if the higher authorities go for ethical employee monitoring, things become more cut and clear.
You have to make things transparent for your employees. Tell them why they need to install an employee monitoring software, and there must not be any issue if they do so. If not, what are the benefits, and what actions will you take if someone misuses it. It is necessary to clear everything out. Otherwise, they will always remain a little skeptical before installing it.
CONSIDER THE CONSEQUENCES
Tumblr media
There will be some consequences if you start walking on the wrong path. Let me show you some of the possible outcomes you have to face if you choose the unethical way of employee monitoring.
DATA BREACH
We keep our personal and professional life apart, but will a monitoring software understand the difference. Most of the employees feel insecure because they fear that there might be some tampering with the data. And even after knowing it, while would someone take the risk? Again if the employers keep checking on the employees throughout the working hours, they might get their hands on all the data stored.
The employees will have a lot of queries if they are getting monitored for the very first time. If there are so many issues, then why not start tracking employees without their consent. Make sure you never have these thoughts! It can get you into serious trouble. Not only will you lose the trust of your employees, but you might also get yourself into facing legal actions.
The most efficient way is to honestly let your employees know that they are getting monitored and do everything legally.
DECREASE EMPLOYEE TRUST
Yes, this will top the list because once they see their employees are into some illegal activities, they will lose trust and interest in working for your company. So do not do anything secretly. You have no right to check on personal emails, social media messages, or any other notification popping up. Again it can happen from the employee’s end too.
Some employees involve themselves in malpractices like sharing out the confidential data of the company. But if you consider every employee to have a similar mindset, you can never find a solution. Hence, go for ethical workplace monitoring rather than indulging in illegal accomplishments.
And, of course, there is a difference. Employee monitoring is tracking the progress of the project on which the employee is working. It makes no sense to get into every detail and information of the employee. It would create a wrong impression whenever your employees get to know about it.
SUSTAINING WORKPLACE MONITORING ETHICS
Tumblr media
Here are some practical ways to monitor your employees ethically.
CONSIDER THE LEVEL OF EMPLOYEE POLICY
Sit down with your HR’s and design a proper employee policy. The policy must include the reasons to monitor the employees. The next thing is to mention what exactly will get observed. Keep everything transparent. Again you have to introduce the different monitoring types like capturing screenshots, website and application usage, and keystroke logging.
Let the employees know which websites and applications get considered as unproductive for the tool. Accordingly, they will receive productivity alerts for not working efficiently. Also, let them know about the hours they will be kept an eye on.
STICK TO THE RULES
Even if it is legally permitted to track the employees if working remotely, keep following the rules. You have no right to go beyond the laws and check on every information of the employee. It might put the company’s reputation at high risk. Hence, you have to stick to the rules provided by the government. It will help the entire process to keep running smoothly.
REALIZE THE NEED FOR MONITORING
To need to make your employees understand the need for monitoring. May it be your in-office employees or remote employees, they should realize why employers keep track of every activity they perform. If you let them know about everything, they might not have any issues getting employee monitoring software installed in their system.
THE MOST ETHICAL WORKPLACE MONITORING SOFTWARE- EMPMONITOR
Tumblr media
We have been talking about employee monitoring software throughout the article. By now, you must have made a clear picture of the best employee monitoring software that you need for your company. Let me put your imagination into words.
EmpMonitor is the most ethical employee monitoring software that monitors each activity of the employee during working hours. It also provides a productive report which shows the details of employee’s assignments. It offers productivity alerts if an employee is remaining unproductive throughout.
Tumblr media
Again the tool has some extra added features like screenshot monitoring. It helps receive screenshots of different time intervals. It helps in more precise employee monitoring. It also provides a detailed report of the website visited and applications used during office hours.
Tumblr media
Keystroke logging is another remarkable feature provided by EmpMonitor. It constantly keeps monitoring the keypunches of the employee’s workstation and dispenses a report. Hence, you can check which employee is working and who has left the workstation ideals for hours.
Tumblr media
The employee time tracking tool also helps in marking the attendance of the employees. Hence, it can monitor them right from logging in to logging out from the workstation. There is no need to invest in any other tool for maintaining the attendance record of the employees.
Tumblr media
Were you considering all these points while imagining the perfect employee monitoring tool? If yes, then you have just landed at the right place. EmpMonitor is one of the best employee tracking tools that acquire all these features and monitor employees ethically. It also offers a free trial, so do not miss the chance and grab the opportunity right away.

Five Reasons Startup Boards Fail To Add Value
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/five-reasons-startup-boards-fail-to-add-value-2/
Five Reasons Startup Boards Fail To Add Value
Done right, a start-up board should help to drive growth
Ask any seasoned startup founder and they’re likely to have a horror story about managing a startup board. “I once had a board member who would come into every board meeting and argue an incredibly strong point of view,” recounts Joe Cohen, serial founder of businesses including Seatwave, who now chairs a number of fast-growth businesses. “And then the next meeting he would come in and argue the exact opposite. It was hugely disruptive, but I couldn’t get rid of him.”
Cohen’s experience is not uncommon amongst startups, most of whom start to think seriously about their board once they raise angel or seed funding. Investors are usually offered – or request – a board seat in exchange for their cash, and the increased governance brings a whole set of new responsibilities and challenges – which aren’t always welcome. Many early-stage entrepreneurs feel that they have enough on their plate already, without justifying their decisions in board meetings every month.
But done right, a board can be a huge asset for founders, giving them access to external expertise, senior experience, and skills that they may lack within their own team. It can help with decision-making, hands-on business development, and act as a driver for growth. Yet, there are a number of common mistakes that founders and directors make, which mean that boards fail to add the value that they’re capable of and, in extreme cases, actually cause more problems than they solve.
Death by reporting
A common misconception amongst founders is that the board is a forum for reporting, with no time given to discussion, insight, or planning. Boards do of course have a governance role, particularly when it comes to big decisions around fundraising, budgeting, and M&A. But their real value lies not in looking backward through reporting, but in planning for the future, solving problems, and adding value around strategy.
Scanes Bentley, an independent chairman and non-executive director, says that this is particularly the case when businesses are at a very early stage. “If they’re a smaller business they want contacts and rainmaking, along with support and advice about raising money,” he explains. “Governance is normally third or fourth on that list. They’re under no obligation to show clear documentation all the time, particularly in the early stages.”
As a result, much of the work should be done between meetings, through an ongoing dialogue with board members about challenges and strategy, while meetings are used to consolidate and finalize decisions. Furthermore, founders shouldn’t expect to introduce anything new in board meetings but should have thoroughly prepared the ground beforehand, to maximize the time they have.
“More inexperienced founders often think that decisions get made at board meetings,” says Cohen. “But actually, the meeting is just about codifying decisions that have already been made and discussing key challenges facing the business. It is never good to introduce completely new information at a board meeting, so don’t send something right before and expect a decision, because it just won’t happen.”
Board overflow
Another common issue is that startup boards are allowed to become too big and cumbersome, as founders bring in more and more investors, all of whom are offered a board seat as part of the deal.
“I’ve seen up to eight investors on a startup board, plus the two directors before they even think about having an independent non-exec,” says Bentley. “A couple of years ago it was seen as being quite cool to be on the board of a talked-about startup…. but when you’ve got an overloaded board you have a lot of egos and it’s hard to get any value out of it.”
Experts recommend that around five board members is ideal – an odd number to make voting decisive. Founders should therefore do a regular review of who will really add value as the business evolves and have an honest conversation with their board members about whether the relationship is still working for both parties. And when there isn’t space on the board, but investors are keen to be involved, a good compromise is to appoint them as observers or members of an advisory panel, to limit the number of people who have a controlling role.
“Board observers are probably the most infrequently used, prized thing that founders can do more of,” says Sujay Tyle, Co-Founder and Former CEO of the recently acquired Frontier Car Group. “You have to invite them to meetings and have them in the room, but you don’t have the complexity of them having to vote, and you still get all the value-add, more than just a typical investor. I would encourage founders to use board observers more liberally than they are probably used to doing.”
Investor “showboating”
Boards can also become a power game between egos to show who has control, rather than being used as a tool that adds real value to the business. If an investor decides to throw their weight around, founders understandably find it hard to put their foot down and this can lead to them feeling bullied and, in some cases, pressurized into making the wrong decisions for the business.
According to Bentley, this is often the consequence of having too many board members: “Everybody is trying to be the smartest person in the room, and it ends up being a quasi-management team and it’s hard for the CEO and CFO to push back against these very successful people,” he explains. “And although it’s usually done in a nice way, you often get people trying to showboat and the CEO comes out feeling beaten up, or that it’s a waste of time.”
Board members aren’t there to tell founders what to do, but instead to listen and offer advice, based on the context provided by the management team. Roelof Botha, Partner at Sequoia Capital, who currently sits on the board of Eventbrite, Evernote, and Tumblr, amongst others, had it right when he said: “A board member doesn’t have the nuanced detail, hence should be careful in terms of being prescriptive…. they should be shock absorbers, not amplifiers.”
Ulrich Schmidt, CEO of Pretty Social Media, believes the key to keeping the board under control is to ensure that roles are clearly defined at the outset: “The board should be involved in strategic decisions, for example budgeting for an expansion or a new product,” he explains. “But they shouldn’t get involved in operational or HR decisions. And if they are getting involved in execution then there needs to be clear accountability, and management needs to be in charge.”
This is something that less experienced board members sometimes struggle to grasp, so first-timers need to listen a lot and ask careful questions. The chairman or independent board member also has an important role to play in helping to control meetings, ensure discussions stay focused, and rein in anybody who oversteps the mark.
“As an independent, my role is often, initially politely and then less politely, to try to shut down unhelpful conversations,” says Cohen.
Optics over strategy
The above issue can be exacerbated by the fact that startup boards are frequently staffed by the wrong people, often because founders want a ‘name’ on their board, irrespective of how much time that person will put in or how much value they will add. As Kate Zatland, Founder and Managing Partner of Forme Partners, a board headhunting firm, says: “A lot of the time, if you look at venture-backed businesses, it’s quite a lot of optics rather than getting down to what you’re trying to achieve and what’s needed.”
Instead, startups should think about the skills and recent experience they actually need, based on what their short-term objectives are, for the next 12 months or so.
“At series A to C, you need people who are really going to help advise on a hands-on basis, rather than give a birds-eye view,” Zatland explains. “So, for instance, if you’re talking about European expansion, you wouldn’t get somebody who has global US experience with several exits under their belt. You just need to think about how you conquer Europe.”
Nina Nærby, Managing Director at Leadership Advisor Group, advises startups to map out the competencies they need in the business, based on where the current gaps are, so they can identify board members who complement the current management and investor team. “Once you’ve got your investors, map it out so you can see what competencies you have and what you are lacking. Then with the last couple of board spots you can be really specific,” she explains.
Schmidt agrees, explaining that he only takes on board members who can contribute something very specific to the company. “We always have something in mind when we’re looking for a board member, whether that’s access to the market, technical knowledge, or access to a partner network. We define a project for them to help with and agree how they will do that and how long it will take, and we hold them accountable against certain targets. We need someone who is working, and if they aren’t working, that they can at least open doors.”
Lack of diversity
Like any team, company boards benefit hugely from having a diversity of voices involved, however, research shows that 75% of companies between Seed and Series B only include management and investors, without an independent director. And while a lack of independents won’t always be an issue, particularly when founders and investors have a strong relationship, it can make it more likely that the board won’t act in the best interests of the company.
“Having an independent board director, appointed by the founders, is something I didn’t do early enough,” says Tyle. “These are folks who can bring a tremendous amount of value-add, and you can typically get an industry veteran… and they represent the founders’ interests. So, it’s another advocate for you.”
Furthermore, even when boards do include independents, there is a tendency to hire from within existing networks, without thinking about bringing in people from a diversity of backgrounds. The result is one-dimensional thinking and poorer decision-making, while Nærby argues it can also increasingly impact fundraising: “It isn’t good to have just British, white, male if you want to attract investors,” she says.
Like every aspect of starting a business, getting the maximum value out of a startup board can be a steep learning curve, and each founder, or founding team, has to develop their own style and decide what works best for them. But dedicating time to getting it right early on, and then nurturing your top team as the business evolves, will ensure you always have the right support – whether that’s in the boardroom, via Whatsapp, or on Zoom – to make your business the best it can be.

Top 10 most effective social media tips & tricks
You know it: as an entrepreneur you regularly see tips that you can use for your social media. Often there are so many tips that you can no longer see the forest for the trees and may therefore not be in action mode. Using social media in the right way is not about quantity, but about quality. In this blog I share 10 effective social media tips & tricks that you should know to use your social media well for optimal visibility of your company.
1. Bring focus
If you shoot at random, you won't hit anything. This also applies online. The social media is bursting at the seams with posts and contributions. The busier it gets, the more difficult it is to be found and seen. To ensure that you can still reach your ideal customers, you need to know everything about them.
This is possible, for example, with personal marketing. That is marketing aimed at one or more specific people in your audience. To do this, you create a fictional person on paper (or your computer) and bring it 'to life', as it were. You are very specific in the description of this person, your ideal customer.
In this way you get to know this fictional person so well that you know exactly what the person needs, wants, wants to read, wants to buy, wants to learn, what problems he / she has, what questions are involved, etc.
In addition to the target group you are targeting, the topic you post about is also important. Preferably choose a niche within your field about which you often share your expertise. It is not wise to talk about everything by betting broadly. Keep it small and go for that niche.
Have you not yet clarified your niche? Or do you want to refine your existing niche? Then answer the following questions
What topics am I passionate about?
In which fields do I see myself as an expert?
Which questions (within my field) are often asked of me?
2. It's all about timing
When is the best time to post a post or contribution? Actually, the answer to this question is different for everyone. In any case, it is important that you do not just put the posts online, but that you focus on certain moments that have been considered.
It is a matter of investigating for yourself when your target audience is online. Put yourself here again in your fans and followers. What does their daily routine look like? Take the persona you created again as a reference (see tip 1). What time does your persona get up? Does your persona work in the office or at home? How does your persona go to work? Does your persona have children? At what times are they likely to be online?
Then check when your posts get the most views and interaction. Test that for a while. Publish your content once on different days and times (morning or evening). Compare the results of your research and then draw your conclusions.
Different social platforms are also frequently visited at different times. Of course, there has been some research into the best times to post. This shows that it is best to post a message on LinkedIn, for example, on Thursday. The best times are between 7am and 8am in the morning or between 5pm and 6pm in the evening. Monday and Friday seem to be relatively less convenient.
Facebook peaks at around 9 a.m. and one at around 10 p.m. In winter, it is a little earlier in the evening.
Finally, you can also analyze the statistics. This gives you important information, such as about the times when your posts were viewed.
3. Vary the shape of your content
Use the different forms to make your content as attractive as possible to everyone. One prefers to watch videos, the other prefers to read and yet someone else would like to listen to your story in a podcast.
I will comment on videos here. Because using videos is a golden move on social media. They also say: content is king and video is queen. Because image and sound ensure that you attract plenty of attention. Provide content that stimulates your target group.
Or - even better - go for live videos: they provide much more interaction than regular videos. That doesn't have to be complicated. For example, answer a frequently asked question in a live video. You can create a series of single questions and answer a question every day in a live video. Simple, but effective.
By the way, pay attention to the use of links in your posts. The social media platforms preferably want the user to remain active on the platform for as long as possible. With a link in the post, the user may be gone in no time. So don't put too often links in your posts.
4. The title is gold
The title of your post or blog is very important. The reader decides at a glance whether he wants to continue reading or not. Therefore, use power words in the title. These attract attention, so that the reader 'lingers' and becomes curious. That is exactly what we want.
Power words often seem a bit exaggerated to you, but they do work. So use them. Take this title, for example: "7 Free Blogging Tools You Must Have Tried". You guessed the power words in this title. 'Free' and 'absolute' and indeed, 'must'.
The words in the example work as follows
personal: (which you absolutely ...).
decided: ('must have tried'). You are convinced.
emotional: absolutely.
powerful: Free.
Make sure every title you publish immediately contains at least one strong word or phrase. Finally, it is smart to include a good keyword in the title, which is searched by your target group.
5. Use exclusivity in a targeted manner
Exclusivity (or scarcity) is a very powerful marketing ploy. This principle works like a charm. Just add a counter to your offer that counts down. Scarcity fuels the well-known fear of missing out (or: FOMO). That's the fact that you can regret something you didn't do (quickly enough). Shops use it day in, day out. Because people start stocking up as soon as there is (in their opinion) a shortage. Just think of the recent events surrounding toilet paper in connection with Corona 😉
You can already create that scarcity with words in your text or on your image that reflect exclusivity for a certain group of people. For example, consider the following:
Only a limited number of places available.
Exclusive access.
Pre-order.
Only for members.
By only giving a certain group access to something, this group feels privileged. The same also applies to discounts, events or products that are made available exclusively for a specific target group. The great thing is that people from this group unconsciously associate this exclusivity with a positive feeling about you and your business.
You can also use scarcity to promote your product / service. Imagine you are giving training soon. By indicating that only 7 places are available (of the 25), you create scarcity. People are now going to register earlier than they would if this was not listed.
You can also use special words with your promotion or offer. These are words that evoke a feeling of scarcity: think of 'limited edition', 'one-off offer' or 'only valid for 1 day'. After all, discounts are always good, as long as they are valid for a certain period. Pay attention to this and state this clearly. Make the most of this handy and simple social media marketing trick.
6. Make grateful and smart use of hook-up moments
Catch up moments are days on which you as an entrepreneur can jump in. A very famous one is of course Black Friday, or think of the usual holidays. Did you know that there are countless other options that you can tap into as an entrepreneur?
Keeping up with current events is a great smart way to work on your online visibility. Catch up moments are useful anyway to give you inspiration about which to post. In addition, current topics often have a higher reach. Social media - such as Facebook - often give priority to personal posts with current content.
It does require some creativity in the beginning, but you can probably find a hook for certain days on which you can pick up from your business. Often there is a twist.
7. Spread your opportunities and bet on multiple social media channels
There are now many different social media platforms on which you can work on your visibility with your ideal customer. Think of Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Pinterest. Even TikTok is already used for business.
Your ideal target group can often be found on multiple platforms. Make sure you can be found there and post regularly. Some entrepreneurs are only on LinkedIn, because according to them the target group is there.
Take HR managers, for example. You will indeed find it on LinkedIn. But: in their spare time they may also spend a lot of time on Pinterest for their hobby. Or on Facebook for social contacts or Instagram for inspiration. If they come across interesting information there for their work, it will certainly attract their attention (even if it is outside working hours).
Spread your opportunities and go for optimal visibility by profiling yourself on different platforms. It will take you more time, but if you do it right, it will definitely pay off.
In addition, it is not inconceivable that at some point a social platform can disappear again. Think of MySpace or Hyves. They were successful, but eventually stopped. That is another reason to spread your activities on social media platforms.
8. Interaction is the keyword
With interaction you involve your fans / followers in your company and that is of course what you want. Whatever you put in your post; always give people the opportunity to respond to that. There are many ways to generate interaction. You can do this in a simple way by asking a question . If you do not do this in your post, you deprive your fans / followers of the opportunity to respond.
Try to keep the question you ask accessible. As a rule, easy questions are always more responsive than difficult questions:
Who gives you inspiration?
What are you going to do this weekend?
Who would you prefer ...
Presenting a dilemma always works very well. That can be a dilemma of your own. Or a dilemma that one of your customers or your employees is struggling with. For example: which color, which slogan or which location. If you have physical products, it is nice to show pictures of the products.
Just ask for a like or comment. For some it can sometimes still be a barrier to ask for a like or a response. This is experienced as a bit loud and intrusive. In my experience, posts that explicitly ask for a like or comment have much higher engagement than comparable posts that don't.
Finally, a type of message with which you can also make nice posts: the 'Fill in on the dotted line' post . You start a sentence that ends with an open part. Then you ask your fans to complete this sentence. They feel heard and involved.
My favorite soup is …….
I like the summer because ……
My favorite relaxation time is….
The first thing I'm going to do in the garden this weekend is ……
Responses guaranteed!
9. You are your company
People do business with people. Everything you do (or don't do), say or write affects your audience. Your audience is going to like you, your company, your product, your brand if you are personal and yourself.
You are a brand yourself. This also applies to a company with several employees and even a large company. Because a company also has character. Just think of HEMA or Coca Cola.
So: your marketing stands or falls with… you! You are very important in your marketing. So stay authentic and be yourself. On social media it is very much appreciated when people are themselves. If they share joys and sorrows (personally and professionally). Because the more personal you are in your posts, the more comments, likes and shares you will get.
Just follow your intuition and let your 'authentic you' come back in all your content. Make sure you have a certain degree of recognizably. This can be done by choosing specific subjects and by using your corporate identity.
10. Use the power of repetition
Did you know that the best marketing has one central message, which is then explained in different perspectives, points of interest, interests and substantiation? In order to really stick, a message has to arrive at the recipient several times. If you want people to remember your message, you have to repeat it (more often).
Entrepreneurs think far too often: I have already posted that on my social media. Or: I've already written about that. Often a specific subject is only highlighted once. That's a shame. Because you can endlessly repeat your central message that you wanted to share.
You can easily reposition something that worked well. Look in your statistics for your posts that received a lot of responses and engagement. If necessary, take a different angle on that topic and post it again. Remember that your potential customer needs repetition to go for you.
Repetition also saves you a lot of work. Since those posts were already doing well, they will likely be well-received.
Repetition is a really powerful persuasion technique. Take advantage of that! Because repeating your message ensures that your audience will remember it better and it can help to convince them to go for your product / service. In addition, you create a positive feeling with your fans / followers with subtle repetition.

Which social media platform is for you?
Tumblr media
As the world stands today, social media is an inexpensive way to keep in touch with your audience. If you've had a look around you can see that there are a great number of different social applications and networks (if you want the very long list of social media sites have a look on this Wikipedia page. This is useful as it has numbers of registered users on each platform and Alexa page rankings included!). These all have different audiences and fulfil a different 'need' for their audience and for the people posting. Here’s our short list of the top 3 types of social media including an example of what platform this could be: Social networks - people and businesses, connecting with people (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter...) Media sharing networks - for sharing images, audios and videos (instagram, YouTube. Tiktok...) Discussion forums - for people and brands to share views and news (Reddit, Quora...) We have accounts on most of the above (and more), but obviously to publish content on all these would be a full time challenge. It may seem overkill, but being up to date on these networks and sharing your knowledge, helps to build social currency. Social Currency is all about reputation (much the same as brand is) it's a measure of your influence on both social networks and offline, and the degree to which your output is then shared by your target audience and others.
Let's look at a few platforms then...
So, let's skip through each of these platforms one by one, giving a very brief flavour of what each network is about, who the audience is and what sort of messages work well on each. One thing to bare in mind across all platforms though is to remember that 'social media' is very much social. Don't spend all your time talking about yourself and your business. If possible we always recommend the 80:20 rule: 80% posts related to your business area (even vaguely), but not directly promoting it20% can be promoting your business more specifically, but still make it 'more conversational' LinkedIn - In the past company pages within LinkedIn used to be viewed primarily as HR landing pages for people looking for jobs. LinkedIn as a whole used to be where professionals could find their next role - through making relevant connections. A lot has changed, and although this is still how some people use it (though better than before) the network is also becoming a great place to help drive business from. It's also becoming a platform to educate your audience of your products and services and in turn, raise brand awareness.
Tumblr media
This is very much a professional to professional network, with men slightly more likely to be LinkedIn users than women (57% of LinkedIn users are male*). Here is where a specialist business of service can get technical with your chosen audience, you can talk shop or post articles direct from your website without any changes. Facebook – On the face of it, it is great way for people to keep in touch with family and friends. It is social media for everyday use. In terms of a business, it can be great for building brand awareness, after all Facebook is one of the largest social media platforms in the world. Remember to post links that interest people though - a post about an accountancy firm will stand out between two pictures of kittens acting cute! - not in a good way. Facebook can drive traffic to your website through posting links and by targeted ads. Ads (which cost money) can get your brand in front of a very specific audience – target specific demographics, based on location, age, gender and interests. To gain traction with your audience, it is best to post fun items in amongst your more business focussed elements.
Tumblr media
Twitter – is a platform that provides access to millions of users (330 million monthly active users*) all over the world. It tends to be more popular with 'educated' individuals. I was once explained that Twitter was like walking into a noisy pub and being able to listen in on each of the conversations (at the time, in 140 characters). The challenge with Twitter is that it is very much a global platform. Your followers could be all over the world, very few of them (if you're a local business) could be your target audience. Through using hashtags you can help the transition from global to local. Though it is very much dependant on your audience using them too. If you market to these people appropriately, then you stand to gain a great amount of exposure. Using a post scheduling platform may help make using Twitter more manageable as the more you post the more audience you gain. Remember - liking, mentioning and commenting on other peoples tweets is a simple way to connect with other users.
Tumblr media
Instagram - is a key platform for younger audiences (67% of people ages 18-29 use Instagram*) and is consistently adding new functionality for business users. It’s an extremely visual platform, in fact it's pretty much all about imagery. As it has become more and more ubiquitous, every small business should consider using it. You should share images of your products in a setting that would be more reflective of your audience. Short videos are ideal of your products in use. Give people a taste of your world, but as well as this, reflect their world. Consider using Instagram Stories, where you can post recorded videos, still photos, live videos etc. As with most platforms liking, mentioning and commenting is a simple way to connect with other users. Also the use of hashtags is again a great way to help your target audience to find content. YouTube - Since its launch in 2005, YouTube has become the goto platform for video content (YouTube has 2 billion monthly active users*). Nearly 500 hours of video are uploaded every minute! A key thing to think about is your audiences age? (71% of people aged between 26-35 use it*).
Tumblr media
If you're going to create content, try and think about what are the sorts of YouTube videos you watch, why do you watch them, what makes them keep you engaged to the end? Remember though, a regular YouTube viewer only spending on average, 11 minutes and 43 seconds per day* on the platform, so it's best to keep content on the short side. As well as the usual likes, links and commenting, think about creating playlists - organise (yours or others) content through a list (perfect for retail or services). Another way to help grow your channel is to share videos regularly on your other media. TikTok - this is a relative new kid on the block. Launched in China in 2016 is is now one of the fasted growing social platforms in the world. With an audience now of more than 800,000,000 active users (yes, that is 800 Million) TikTok's mission is “to capture and present the world’s creativity, knowledge, and precious life moments, directly from the mobile phone. TikTok enables everyone to be a creator, and encourages users to share their passion and creative expression through their videos. Bascally, TikTok is about making and viewing video content. Creativity and individuality are key. Videos can be uploaded or created from within the app, with users also having the option to live stream. From within the app users can add visual filters, time effects, transitions, stickers, emojis, and much more.
Tumblr media
The target audience really is the under 30's (Roughly 50% of TikTok’s global audience is under the age of 34 with 26% between 18 and 24). Marketing was slow to jump on the TikTok band wagon, but now brands like Nike, Pepsi, Lush (already having 117k followers) and Skittles have open accounts. It has even got to a point where online giants: Buzzfeed are recruiting youngsters to cover the US elections on TikTok! The good news is that if you're going to create content, there most definitely an audience, though it may be in India (which accounts for 43% of new TikTok users) or China (in 2019 80% of the time spent on the platform was from Chinese users). However this is a platform with is still growing, get in there early and you could reap the rewards. As with other social media, make sure your content is fun or if your brand can stand it - outrageous. Take full advantage of the in built advertising possibilities: Infeed native content (like in snapchat), Hashtag challenges (takes some of the stress out of building a hashtag following), Brand takeovers (take over the TikTok for the day) or Branded lenses (like the 2d and 3D lenses within Snapchat). Reddit - First off, Reddit dislikes marketers. That said, if you can find a way to market to the mainly male audience it can reap rewards. There are only two reasons someone goes to Reddit: to get information or to have fun. And they go there in their droves. Reddit has 85 Million global monthly users, with 64% of them under the age of 30. One thing that will help is to chose a 'subreddit' that links to what you do and get to know the users there. Ask a question, be helpful or just make people laugh, but become part of that community. The more you get to know them and the more they get to know you the better relationships you’ll build and the more attention your business will receive. It's a tough audience, but could be great in the long run.
Tumblr media
Quora - is basically a site where people ask and answer questions. These questions could be anything, from the serious: What is the impact of logo design on brand recognition?, to the abstract: What does the Coke logo mean?. Everything has to be one of the two. With more than 300 million unique visitors every month, Quora is a weighty platform. In some ways the same as Reddit, Quora relies on an upvoting system. The more people that upvote your answer, the more exposure your answer gets. The great thing about Quora is that every answer is searchable through Google, allowing your answers to link back to your website. The thought leadership opportunities in this platform are immense.
Tumblr media
What next?
Well, the above are only a few of the platforms out there. Really which ones you go for is up to you. Have a look around each platform, see if there are other companies that are like yours visible, see if the tope of people that you see as your audience are visibly engaging on the platform. See the sort of content that's being produced. This will help you come up with content of your own. Make it as original as possible and make sure it 'feels' like your brand. Remember though, companies may have a whole team behind their posts - so don't be too hard on yourself. Think of your audience, make a plan, and where possible stick to it - plans are always meant to be broken though - so be flexible and think on your feet!
