NotMISpecies- Invasive species webinar series
Invasive species pose a threat to Michigan’s environment, economy, and sometimes even human health. The upcoming NotMISpecies webinar series explores how agencies, universities, and locally led organizations are working together to protect Michigan’s natural resources through the Michigan Invasive Species Program.
Tumblr media
Anyone concerned about the impacts of invasive species or interested in the techniques used to control them is encouraged to attend as experts examine species-specific actions, innovations in research and technology, and programs designed to help communities prevent and manage harmful invasive species.
A question-and-answer period will follow each presentation. Recorded versions of all previous NotMISpecies webinars are available at Michigan.gov/EGLE/Outreach under “Featured Webinar Series.”
Upcoming webinars in the series
February 7, 9 to 10 a.m. Lobster mobsters: An update on Michigan’s red swamp crayfish response
Though sometimes called “mini-lobsters,” invasive red swamp crayfish are anything but sweet. Once they show up in an ecosystem, they quickly take over, leaving little or nothing for the locals. Dr. Lucas Nathan, aquatic invasive species coordinator for the Michigan DNR, is intent on turning the tide of infestation in southeast Michigan. Join him to hear about recent advances in research and management of this combative crustacean.
March 21, 9 to 10 a.m. Rowing the boat: The Michigan Invasive Species Program 2022 year in review
The hearty crew of staff, partners and volunteers that make up the MISP navigated through some rough waters in 2022 with new detections of beech leaf disease and spotted lanternfly in the state, but they also managed to make a lot of headway. The program’s communications coordinator, Joanne Foreman, will highlight response efforts, prevention, outreach and survey work undertaken in 2022 to protect Michigan’s natural resources from the effects of invasive species.

We had an awesome visit to ogunquit on our way home yesterday! It has been 10 years since we went there for our honeymoon. It was fun to reminisce as we walked the marginal way connecting with many wild plants along the way! The last two pics was the view from the restaurant we went to in perkins cove. Things are buddin’ & bloomin’ down at the rainsoak at the bottom of the driveway 🤗 . Autumn Olive beginning to bud, mole poblano sage continues to bloom & blow out the color balance of my camera, & the 3 different types of mint are rippling along the surface everywhere, ready to explode 🥳 . I call it a rainsoak, but really we don’t get much rain—yesterday & today will probably count for 10-20% of our raindays this year 😢 . Don’t forget to plant pollinators that bloom over winter! They’re #BeeUtiful & the hummingbirds are very appreciative & all abuzz about them 🤓👍 . #SpringIsComing #BerryGoodBuds #AutumnOlive #Berries #MolePoblano #Salvia #Sage #Mint #RainGarden #WinterGardening #NorCal #Zone9bGardening #Zone9b #Permaculture https://www.instagram.com/p/CMSInh1AXQ9/?igshid=edqw6ikhsqoj

Latest local forage — hickory nuts, chestnuts, and autumn olives. I’m planning a hickory pie, similar to a pecan pie — though shelling hickories is a painstaking process, so this will be a very small experiment. The chestnuts are in the freezer now and will find many uses this winter—soups, desserts, fritters— the possibilities are endless. The autumn olives have been juiced and cooked slowly into a concentrate that reminds me of tamarind, only fruitier and sweeter. I’m thinking of making a chutney, its flavor rounded with prune and cumin and lime, garam masala and ginger. Last week I juiced wild grapes and made a dark, deeply flavorful syrup, thickened with chia seeds into a makeshift grape jam. And also I made apple sauce from the tart knobby fruit of abandoned trees in my neighborhood, with a bit of maple syrup to sweeten. And last night I steamed and ate—with lemon and tahini dressing— the tasty leaves of evening primrose, “weeds” that grew prolifically in the un-mown paths of my otherwise neglected garden. In other words, I’ve been celebrating harvest time, and the gifts of Mother Nature. Because that’s job number one for humans—to celebrate and appreciate what we’re given. . . . #harvesttime #forage #newenglandfall #newenglandforaging #foraging #chestnuts #hickorynuts #autumnolives #autumnolive #naturegifts #naturegift #autumnharvest #wildfood #wildharvest #eveningprimrose #gratitude #homestead #homesteadlifestyle #ctlife #ctharvest (at Connecticut) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGG3AleHzI0/?igshid=1s4ic59mxj5jm

When we cleared the property nearly 20yrs ago for building, we left 2 Autumn Olive bushes in the backyard because they smell soooo good in spring. Every April/May they are loaded with blossoms that fill the air with a pervasive sweetness that even reaches into the house if the windows are open. But there's a price for those couple of weeks of sweet scent - these invasive shrubs come with 1 to 2 inch thorns! . #flowers #ig_flowers #instaflowers #flowersofinstagram #flowerpower #flowerporn #nature #autumnolive #flowerphotography #9vega9 #9vega_flowersart9 #inmyyard #inmygarden #flowerphotography #nature #naturephotography #canonphotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CA3GHqzJicv/?igshid=1liylbztr6t8y

Autumn Olive (Elaeagnus umbellata) flowers under the half moon. This tree fixes atmospheric nitrogen in the soil and bears a massive amount of tart sweet fruit that has up to 18 times more lycopene than tomatoes. The other day, the Preserve Manager from Natural Lands Trust was passing by (one of their preserves butts up against the field where I grow) and told me this tree from East Asia and Russia produces fruits with a very low fat content just before winter, so if our native birds choose to eat these fruits they will not fatten up enough for a cold winter. It made me think about our diets and how we rarely eat what our ancestors ate OR what is in season where we live, and that probably weakens us too. Well, meanwhile I’m determined to get these berries before the birds this year. #elaeagnusumbellata #autumnolive #autumnoliveflowers (at Newtown Square, Pennsylvania)
