6 Helpful Gift Brainstorming Ideas
Tumblr media
Looking for gift ideas this holiday season? Unsure what to get?
Shopping during the holiday season can be a challenge in itself without considering your budget or time limit. Assuming you have some time left before the holidays sneak up on you, here are some helpful tips to helping you find the right gifts for the right people.
Think of What Qualities Come to Mind When You Think of That Person
When you're shopping for someone, as easy as it is to have the logic if "I like it, they'll like it" it doesn't always apply. When you're reminded of this person what triggers that thought? Did something related to a food or drink they like show up somewhere in your life? Gift them that food or drink or maybe some decorative or funny drinking glasses or kitchenware to go with it. Did their favorite sports team pop up somewhere and you thought of them? Get them some memorabilia or sports themed merchandise. Or did you think of them when a specific hobby comes to mind? Get them some supplies to support that hobby or something themed around that hobby like an ornament. Really stretching the boundaries of the influence this person has can help you brainstorm limitless gift ideas.
2. Sentimental Gifts Are the Most Memorable Gifts
Think of those events both good and bad that happened this year; Was there anything you could have done to help them? Did they just start a new chapter in their life? Did they just achieve something? Some examples of items in this category could be framed photos, money to help with expenses, items to help them with any major event happening in their lives, an ornament to remember an event or to let someone know they're not alone, or something you noticed them eyeing when you spent time with them last.
3. You Can Never Go Wrong with Necessities and Self-Care Items
Items like blankets, pillows, socks, calendars, foods, drinks, desserts, and self-care items like candles, and skin care products, never go out of style as they're always needed. Although any of these things can be mixed and matched according to what you think the person you're shopping for would like, sometimes thinking of what this person will do with the items helps. For example, if you know the person you're shopping for is stressed, try giving them a small collection of gifts that would help them relax. To name a few examples, perhaps a bath bomb, some wine, a candle, CD, blanket, and/or facemask.
4. Plan It Around a Theme
If you know the person you're shopping for really enjoys a specific activity, place, or thing, try making an assortment of gifts around that theme. For example, if you're doing a secret Santa at work and you know absolutely zilch about this person, try making a basket of items around something basic like a movie night themed basket. That basket could include popcorn, a DVD of your choice, chocolate, and maybe something festive like candy canes and hot cocoa. Or to name another example, say you know this person loved their trip to Ogunquit, Maine and can't stop talking about it, try making an assortment based off of their trip. To name some examples of items for such an assortment: a themed mug, an ornament related to the state or place, perhaps a gift card to use at one of the shops or restaurants in that area, and maybe something unique from one of the local shops in that area.
5. Gift Cards & Money
A lot of people would prefer money or gift cards over something they won't be able to use, like most gag gifts, but from the gift giver's perspective it can seem uninspiring or impersonal. That's why it is a good idea to pair a giftcard or money with something small or sentimental, or have the giftcard be towards one of their favorite shops.
6. Gag gifts
These are always a safe bet if you want something more tangible than money or gift cards, but know your humorous boundaries with the person you're buying for as you don't want to overstep any boundaries. These items could include a witty saying on drinking glasses, coasters, or napkins, or could very well be something out of the ordinary like a bitcoin themed ornament or something to make light of the pandemic.
Final Thoughts
Now that you have some ideas going, it's important to remember it's the thought that counts, not the item. No matter what you choose to do this holiday season, don't forget your values and what truly matters this time of year.

My mans back there was shadow boxing and I missed it because I was trying to get the sign in focus with him doing his thing back there. Instead, I got him contemplating the ocean. Disappointed I didn't get the shot I was hoping for given the scenario. Maybe this is a reminder that "Nailing critical focus" isn't actually THAT important. FWIW, that sign is most definitely perfectly in focus so at least I did something right.
*Ran out of “funnies” (I’m not actually funny, sorry). But it’s Portra
