Honey bee, by request. One of the many endangered life forms of the modern era, canaries in the coal mine of environmental destruction. Random share: if I had loads of free time I would draw a portrait of all the beloved pets that ever dies and give it to the humans that loved them in appreciation for their interspecies love. We need so much more interspecies love on this planet. There was a time in my life when I was so miserable and angry. I didn’t like anyone. I didn’t like myself. I didn’t want to be with anyone. Conversations were the worst possible torture. So I went for long walks and practiced loving individual trees. I rarely touched them, I just admired and appreciated and cared about them. It helped. . I just posted the following on my facebook along with the video in my insta profile highlights called “Drawings”: In October I started giving away art, posting a piece at a time on Instagram and on my amyKstudio facebook page. I wasn’t sure how it would go, if I’d feel impoverished parting with all these things, embarrassed because no one wanted them, or inspired to make more. Since then, I’ve offered up 111 pieces of art. 88 have been claimed. Some surprises: 1. Some people prefer to pay. 2. Shipping and coordinating pickups are a lot of work. 3. I feel lighter and more alive and inspired with every piece that goes out the door. 4. I like giving away art. I also like being supported to do more. So, a new experiment: all of these drawings are now available for purchase, you name the price. I mean, really, whatever feels right to you. And please don’t decide that something you want is worth more than you can afford, because that’s not the kind of artist I am, and you deserve to have art. On the heels of the Derek Chauvin verdict I felt a lift of hope. Then I read about the shooting of Ma’Khia Bryant, which hit me like a punch in the chest. We humans have so much work to do, so much healing to do. Rather, I should say, we white people have so much work and healing to do, to recognize the fear we carry, the arrogance, and how that translates into violence. And also the compromises we accept to our humanity by numbing out to the pain and suffering of others. Perhaps the place to begin is to grieve all the nonsensical damage we see and feel, our own anger and sense of powerlessness. Perhaps the place to begin is to carve out a space in our lives to contend with it all, beginning with whatever discouragement comes up at the prospect of putting our already strained attention on one more difficult thing.
