The Office: Preptober 2023 - Snowflake Edition
Preptober will start on Monday 18 September 2023 and run until 31 October 2023
You may or may not have come across the Snowflake method by Randy Ingermanson, who tells us he is the mad professor of fiction writing. The snowflake method is based on the idea of writing a small amount and then expanding it again and again until you have your outline and, ultimately, your book. Throughout Preptober I will post the steps outlined on his website for people to complete: along with me. The idea is to have an outlined novel ready for NaNoWriMo.
How am I doing this challenge?
I am going to be using this challenge to prepare for NaNoWriMo and I will be going through all the steps.
How am I preparing for this challenge?
I am going to read the book that accompanies this method How to Write a Novel Using the Snowflake Method.
The Office: NaNoWriMo 2023
NaNoWriMo will run from 1 November 2023 to 30 November 2023.
And now we’re ready to start. 50,000 words. 1 month.
How am I doing this challenge?
I will be trying to complete NaNoWriMo in 2023. I managed this last year, but failed the two years before that. I’ll post my word counts and project.
How am I preparing for this challenge?
I will be completing the Preptober challenge above to get ready. I’ll also have a playlist and some materials that help me ‘get into the flow’ for writing. Artists often do a warm up before they start work, and I find doing something like that helps me too.
The SNUG: Do IT DECEMBER 2023
This challenge is about getting things done. The year is drawing to a close. Remember that list? The one you wrote in January? Spend some time finishing something from that list. Or finish your NaNoWriMo novel. Or anything else you want to get done in 2023. Do it.
How am I doing this challenge?
I wrote a list of things I wanted to do in 2023. I’ll be ignoring that completely and coming up with a list of things I want to get finished by the end of the year that is achievable.
How am I preparing for this challenge?
I have a couple of ideas already and I’ll be working to see if I can get them to an achievable state. For example, I set myself a reading challenge, which I need to keep working on if I want to be able to finish it off in December.

The real fears driving procrastination - and five tips to overcome them

I was talking to a good friend on the phone today and discussing how I’ve struggled with anxiety, procrastination and perfectionism. I realised that often I am afraid to really try something and give it my best shot, in case it fails. But then I also concluded that it would be better to try my best and fail quicker, so I can at least move on to a new project or opportunity faster. 
Sometimes, it’s a matter of timing, and we need to have self compassion. In my case, physical illness has been a significant barrier. Also, mental health can hold us back, and there’s no need to beat ourselves up. Sometimes, we need to do more developmental work, to be fully ready to create something and put it out there in the world.
Sometimes it takes a level of vulnerability we are not ready for, as we don’t feel safe and secure enough to take those risks. And sometimes we have very good reasons for that. For example, writing and blogging about one’s personal life can feel extremely vulnerable. It’s okay to not be in the right headspace to do that. Putting your art out there can feel so risky, as it’s like you’re putting yourself out there to be judged. 
This can be a really tough challenge, especially when it comes to creating income - because it can be tied to our basic fears and traumas around survival. If we try out all our creative ideas and they don’t work, then what if there’s very few options left? It’s a scary thought, and I often would rather not face that. Yet I am coming to the acceptance that there is an even higher cost to not facing fears.
I remain stuck. I remain paralysed. I don’t give the world my best, or really live my purpose to the fullest. 
I also may never really know if a business idea or creative project is going to be fruitful and successful. Wouldn’t it be better to find out, so I can keep refining my ideas and trying something new or different? A similar principle can apply in dating too. It’s often better to just ask someone out and get a clear yes or no, so you can move on without pining after them and spending too much mental energy wondering about it. 
Of course, some pursuits are primarily for personal fulfillment and contributing to the greater good. They don’t necessarily have to make money or be popular to be meaningful. But if you need to generate more income, then earning matters.
As well as that, it’s easy for me to get caught up in what other people think. Will they judge me if I fail, or see me as a “loser”? These thoughts are enough to stop anyone in their tracks. 
Even fear of success can loom large, unconsciously. We may wonder if others will be envious or judge us for being successful, and for taking up space. This is a particular struggle for many women. Or we may fear that if we succeed, people will discover we are an impostor, and we won’t be able to keep it up.
Here is the advice I would give myself - and to anyone else facing a similar dilemma:
1. Accept the possibility of failure, and try to reframe it as a good thing. It’s best to test an idea and find out quickly whether it’s truly viable, especially when it comes to creating a profitable business or income stream. Once you give something your very best shot, then you can let it go without any “what ifs” or regrets.
2. Accept that people are going to judge you, and it’s actually okay. Obviously, most people aren’t thinking about you as much as you imagine. But even if they do judge you, it doesn’t have to hold you back. I like the famous Theodore Roosevelt quote:
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
3. Get help and treat any underlying anxiety or other mental health issues that may be holding you back. ADHD and executive dysfunction can also be a real struggle for many. Support and insight from close friends, mentors, coaches and therapists can make a world of difference. Accountability buddies and mastermind groups can be fantastic for staying on track with your goals, too. 
4. Aim to be outcome-independent as much as possible, by setting goals and congratulating yourself for ticking them off - even if you don’t actually sell anything or get likes on social media. Find a way to reward yourself for meeting your goals, and for putting your best foot forward.
5. Some ideas and projects are best kept as hobbies, creative outlets and a source of personal fulfillment beyond money. Just because something is not financially successful or popular does not make it any less worthwhile. (Or even if it is financially successful, you may decide you don’t want to ruin the fun of your hobby by making it into a business venture.) And the sooner you figure that out, the clearer your next steps will be.
I hope that you too can start to dig deep, and ask why you put things off. Or why you can’t seem to start them at all! However, the most important piece of advice I would give is to have a great deal of self compassion, and approach the parts of you who are scared or fearful with loving kindness.

The Four-Ingredient Recipe For Actually Getting Things Done
Tired of making to-do lists that you can’t seem to complete, despite your best intentions? You’re in good company. Most of us make these lists to keep track of all the things we need to tackle in the near future, but our to-dos can easily get out of hand, making it hard to check everything off the list.
Ayelet Fishbach, professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, has spent her career studying the science of motivation and she knows what it takes to achieve more. She’s literally written the book on the subject, “Get It Done: Surprising Lessons from the Science of Motivation,” and her decades of research can help you finally get through your weekly to-do lists.
If you have a handful of big goals to accomplish each week, Fishbach recommends her “four-ingredient recipe” to help you get them done:
Set the goal right - That means setting goals that are intrinsically motivating. She explains that an approach or “do” goal is better than an avoidance or “do not” goal. For example, “go to a morning Pilates class” is more motivating than “don’t oversleep.”
Monitor progress and switch your focus in the middle - When you reach the halfway point of your to-do list, look back at how much you’ve accomplished and what you still need to do. Then readjust your plan as needed to help you finish up. Lots of us lose steam in the middle of pursuing our goal, so refocusing at that point can help.
Your goals should balance each other - It’s not helpful to you if your goals undermine each other and specific goals should fit in with everything else you want to do. If your overall plan is to eat more healthily, it’s best to take that trip to the ice cream shop off the list.
Seek social support - There’s no shame in asking for assistance. Let the people around you who want you to succeed give you a hand when you need extra help.
