I didn't know it was the Beano's 85th anniversary today, so I only had time to throw a quick picture together, but it felt wrong to do nothing. The Beano was definitely the biggest inspiration for me making my own comics when I was a kid, and who knows what I'd be doing now without it. Working at a bank, maybe. Imagine.

I wonder if my ‘Dennis The Menace Fan Club’ (and ‘Gnasher’s Fang Club’) membership is still valid?

Sonic the Comic Liveblog: Issue 56
We start off by returning to this prison break story!
I don’t doubt that Sonic has the reaction time to catch a whip mid-lash, but surely it still gotta sting a bit?
It’s actually a Tardis
I mean, that quip wasn’t far off: same deal as a Tardis with the travelling thing, just not through time too
Yes, I’m sure a rectangular box with heavy cargo in it and a passenger on top is very aerodynamic
I’m not gonna put the actual image here, but this issue’s fanart section is themed around Sonic characters in worldwide traditional/historical outfits I’d guess you say? Anyway, the very first one is China inspired and the way it’s drawn? Yikes.
My reaction to the fact the editors decided to publish that particular reader’s drawing is ‘disappointed but not surprised’. I’ve seen examples of casual racism of Asian people from other British comics (such as the Beano) published around the same time period, so this isn’t like, completely out of nowhere but still not nice to see.
Moving on from that heavy topic and going back to the Chaotix story. As I said last time I refreshed on the story of Knuckles Chaotix and tbh while Metal Sonic is a significant part of that game’s story, I still don’t get what the deal is with these two small Metallixs
I was half-tempted to bring it up last issue but now that it’s continuing this issue I really gotta say it; in almost every single panel of this story, Nack is making this exact fucking pose. Why??
Between issues I also took a look at the manual for Knuckles Chaotix; it says Espio ‘has a temper’ while Charmy is ‘surprisingly sophesticated’. Quite the difference from their later personalities in Heroes onwards.
Nack: screws up then decides ‘fuck this shit, I’m out’. Is he just in this story because they couldn’t come up with a tie-in story for Sonic Triple Trouble?
