I think it's best to understand the rhetoric of BHI, spread via Kanye most recently, as a manifestation of Christian supersessionism. It's one of the oldest anti-Jewish doctrines: that Jews no longer exist, Christians are our successors, and we are the "synagogue of Satan."

In a sense it's banal. Just about every ethnicity has a cult of people claiming their ethnicity is the real Jews/Hebrews/Israelites, and this is rooted in something fairly universal to Christianity, the idea that Christians have replaced Jews.

Pale's been getting real scary again! While I was brainstorming what is going to happen next in the story (I've finished 9.5, the ending of which made me shocked beyond belief), in the meantime I thought it'd be fun to do some color coding of the locations featured in Pale! Which so far, not counting realms, have been Kennet and the BHI. I consider the BHI to be coded with blues and purples, and Kennet to be coded with yellows and reds. I also included a bonus sketch of what being an innocent is like in Kennet. Perhaps also a bit of a Montague sketch? I dunno.

Black Hebrew Israelitism is a decentralized movement of various different so-called churches or synagogues of varying cooperation with each other. The main unifying doctrine of the BHIs is the belief that African-Americans are the biological descendants of the ancient Israelites.

Generally, the term "cult" refers to individual places of worship or groups thereof, rather than entire movements, but an entire movement can be described as "cultic" One mark of a cult is dismissing all criticisms out of hand. Most BHI groups do this; when non-black people criticize the movement, they are said to be "Edomites," and when actual African-Americans criticize the movement, they are said to be "house servants" (the actual insult they use involves ethnic slurs) or "bedwenches."
