it's you, it's you, it's all for you (everything i do) word count: 1.1k
eddie asks about buck's coma dream, 6x11 coda (also the title is from video games by lana del rey because they're playing a video game in this sdlfgjh okay enjoy)
“So,” Eddie says after they’ve both died in the video game. Christopher got it recently and already completed the entire game — a magical quest one that ends with them fighting off an evil wizard that turns into a dragon. Very Maleficent, if you ask Buck.
“So?” Buck echoes, looking over at him. They’re sitting on the floor, backs resting against the couch. Eddie looked at him curiously when he plopped onto the ground, but a couch feels like a little bit of a sore subject at the moment.
Especially when his mom recently bought the largest, ugliest, most uncomfortable sofa Buck’s ever sat on. It’s an eyesore. And it is, unfortunately, taking up half his loft.
It feels kind of pointed. Like the universe is trying really hard to tell him something. He figures he better figure it out soon, because he doesn’t feel like getting struck by lightning or something.
Again.
Point is, Buck wants a comfortable couch. It doesn’t have to be huge, or have reclining seats, or anything, but it needs to feel right. He needs to sit on it and feel like he’s home. Like he can relax and shed some of the pressures of the day.
It might be a lot to put on a couch, but Buck’s willing to wait.
So, basically, they’re on the floor.
“What was I like? In your dream? I mean, I was in it, right?”
“Kind of?” Buck tilts his head, scrunching his nose as he looks at it. “I don’t think you’re gonna like what my subconscious came up with.”
Eddie shrugs, leaning against the couch, head tilted slightly. He’s very pretty, Buck’s been noticing. Not that there has ever been a moment where he thought Eddie was unattractive, but it’s been a kind of new discovery to realize the small smile on his face as he waits for Buck to move on makes his heart swoop.
It’s not a new feeling, either, just one he wasn’t ready to look at, yet. He’s still not quite there, if he’s being honest with himself.
It’s just—
Eddie’s couch fits him, Eddie, and Chris pretty comfortably. Buck’s spent an awful lot of nights (and a lot of awful nights) sleeping on this couch. And it’s not like Buck’s ready to put this couch in his loft or move into Eddie’s house so he can sit on this couch all the time, but. Maybe soon he’ll be okay with…sitting on it, or something.
And he thinks Eddie might grab some beers from the fridge and sit beside him.
“I still wanna know,” Eddie says, low and soft, quiet under the repetitive tune of the video game still playing on the TV.
“Okay,” Buck says. “Well, I didn’t see you.”
“You saw everyone else but you didn’t see me? I thought we were best friends,” he teases.
“We are. You were alive in it. Chim mentioned you.”
“Your subconscious puts Chimney over me?”
I think my subconscious knew that if I saw you and you weren’t the Eddie sitting in front of me, I wouldn’t know how to cope, he thinks, but keeps the words to himself. Rolls his eyes fondly and mumbles a “shut up,” instead.
“No, seriously. Here I’ve been considering you my friend, bringing my son to see you in the hospital — sneaking him into the ICU, by the way, because he wouldn’t leave the hospital without seeing you—”
“Really?” Buck asks, and he hates the awe in his voice. He hates the way, even after all this time, he doesn’t know how to trust that people want him around. Not fully, anyway.
Eddie catches onto it. Of course he does.
“Buck, of course. Chris needed you to come back. We all did.”
Buck hears the silent I needed you to come back. He doesn’t point it out.
He swallows around a tightness in his throat.
“Oh,” he whispers. Eddie snorts, looking at him fondly.
“Yeah. Oh.”
“You didn’t have Chris. In my dream,” Buck blurts.
“Your parents fought for custody and won. You—I didn’t know you. In the dream. Or, you didn’t know me, but, hell, it’s my brain, right? So I knew. I knew you fought like hell to keep him, but your hours in the end—Eddie, I hope you know I don’t think I, like, am the reason you have Chris. You’re the best dad I know, okay? I know you would do anything in the world for him, I was just living in my worst case scenario, and—”
“I didn’t have you,” he says simply. “I would do anything for my son, obviously, but without the right help, without Carla, I can only imagine the kind of hell my parents would’ve given me.”
Eddie’s looking at him so gently that Buck would trip over the feelings he’s spilling onto the floor if he weren’t sitting down.
“You’re not wrong to assume our lives would kind of suck without you, Buck.”
“My life sucked without you. You were the first person I thought of, when I woke up in that dream. You and Christopher,” he admits softly, his words washing over them like a blanket. Eddie scoots closer. Buck can’t tell if the action is intentional or not, he just knows that from one second to the other there’s a new, unmistakable warmth along his side.
“Yeah?” Eddie asks, like he can’t believe Buck. Like he can’t believe he got lucky enough to have him sit here and admit that Eddie and Chris were the first tethers, his first pulls back home.
“Yeah. Always. Fought to come home, y’know.” Buck hopes it comes off casually. Hopes it comes off like his heart isn’t lodged in his throat, like maybe the 118 is his home, but Eddie seems to get it, anyway.
Eddie knocks their shoulders together, and it’s a quiet promise. They both know, he’s pretty sure. They both know they’ve got something going, something good, something with a couch and a house and a family. A love Buck doesn’t have to die to experience.
But it’s not the right time. Close. Just hovering around the corner. Buck can be patient for once in his life; Eddie’s worth everything.
He picks up his controller, silently asking if he wants to go again.
Eddie nods, but his finger hovers over the play button. His brown eyes are warm and dark when they land on Buck’s, and it takes mental effort to remember he needs to keep breathing when Eddie smiles at him — soft and fond and flushed a peachy pink.
“For the record,” he says, clearing his throat like the words don’t know how to come out. “I always fight to come home to you, too.”
Buck’s character dies three times in a row, the words home to you on an endless loop in his mind.
Yeah, he thinks. Knows, really. Soon.

40. little known bia lore is that it used to be 41 but i archived a larry one shot i wrote sophomore year of high school before i started posting for shameless LMAO
What's your total ao3 word count?
338,716

i did not know these were my top five lol
Do you respond to comments?
not as much as i'd like :( there really are only so many ways you can say thank you, but i do try!! especially when the fic is first posted. i just get so many that it gets overwhelming to keep up, but i appreciate all of it soooooo soso much i mean that i really do.
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
probably some spec? i'm a "happy ending or bust" kinda guy tho idk if i have anything

What are your writing strengths?
my lit professor says i write good metaphors? which i'll agree with, i like the way i describe inner monologues.
What are your writing weaknesses?
smut in many ways but especially in the sense of "oh my god can the english language please pretty please come up with a new synonym for cock i can't do this."
also, i have a hard time writing dialogue that feels organic to me? i think the end result works out fine but it doesn't come immediately
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
i'm fluently bilingual and do switch between english and portuguese in conversation, so it does feel realistic for a character to do that, but it's down to personal taste when i like it or not
First fandom you wrote in?
well. phan.

STRAIGHT EDDIE FWB YOU ARE SO LOVED BY ME!!!!!! wishing to be the friction it's my magnum opus. i almost called it my prima donna because those words are the same in my mind.

Fanfic Writer Questions
thanks for the tag @optiwashere!
If you're reading this, consider yourself tagged! But here is one more for the road: @collegeoflore
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
Apparently I have 20? That's news to me lol. I would have guessed like 10 to 12. I've used this AO3 account for a while, I guess.
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
62,119 words, according to the statistics.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
Currently, only Baldur's Gate 3. Before that I was writing lightcanon for League of Legends.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. And They Were Roommates
2. To Muzzle a Gith
3. Misfit and Nomad
4. I Thought About You
5. Workouts in a Winter Hellscape
Damn. Some of these are callbacks.. Not too surprised, though. These either have popular ships or popular fandoms. LoL lightcanon in 1, 3, and 4 make sense to me, even if I'm embarrassed by the writing in them. Continually shocked by To Muzzle a Gith. I guess Shadowzel is that popular? I don't know. I have so little desire to write for them again and the writing in it makes me cringe, tbh. Same with #5 LMAO. You couldn't pay me enough to reread the fics I wrote in highschool.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Yes, always! Well. If someone comments on something really old I might not? But only because im scared they'll ask me to update it lmao. But in general, yes! I love talking and hearing what people liked!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
If I'm including the 20 QOTD Challenge fic (and i am because this is my post), I'd have to give it to Nerves, ch19 of that challenge. I mean, its a flashback scene about killing a childhood friend (and maybe lover) for a crumb of an uncaring goddess' attention.
It's pretty much the only piece of angst I've written that doesn't have some overtone of hope to it. I'm hoping to work it into my act 1 rewrite because I like it so much.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
To me, its Savoring Seconds from the challenge. It's bittersweet but after everything those two have been through... It's the happiest I can envision them ever being. Maybe that's just my bias tho :P
8. Do you get hate on fics?
No? Do most people get hate on fics? I haven't had anything of the sort. Hard to imagine what that would even be like..
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Yes, I do. Outside of To Muzzle a Gith, I think I write pretty tame stuff? More emotional than anything.
10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
A Common Song was really the only crossover, but even then.. it was really just a League of Legends fic with a cyberpunk2077 au. It had some good ideas tho.. maybe I'll return to it some day.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I've noticed?
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Nope!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Not really. I've helped with brainstorming before but that's really all.
14. What's your all time favorite ship?
This.. is tough. I change fandoms too often for something like this 😭 If I had to pick a bg3 ship... Laz/Karlach. Is it cheating to say my OC ship? Probably. But fuck you, its MY post. I've cried multiple times on the bus just thinking about these two, no one else had quite the strangle hold on me. (I was thinking abt Karlach's funeral btw).
15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
A Common Song. I was cooking on some of those ideas but I was FAR too ambitious lmao
16. What are your writing strengths?
I'm... Not totally sure, to be honest. Its hard to read your own stuff and see what's uniquely strong. If you have any thoughts, please let me know!
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I don't think my writing has much rhythm to it. I'd like to work on that. Also my grammar is shoddy at best. English classes were always my lowest grades :,)
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
For fantasy languages I think it's fun! It can add a lot of depth and creates a lot of insight to a characters culture. Dabbling with Drowic for example was a lot of fun.
But like, a real language? Naw. I don't know any other languages so unless it was a phrase I knew a character said in canon.. I wouldn't want to risk a shoddy google translate.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Uh. It was either Invader Zim, Mass Effect, or SAO? I'm not totally sure. This would have predated AO3, when I was in middle school or something. I've tried to find those fics but I think they're genuinely lost.
Probably for the best lol.
20. Favorite fic you've written?
Currently, it is Snowfall. Once I post it, I think it'll be the act 1 rewrite.

20 Questions for Fic Writers
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
on my profile 32, i think? (but actually 35)
2. Whats your total word count?
59,890 tho i do have like 56000 more words in orphaned works
3. What fandoms do you write for?
primarily Jujutsu Kaisen, i had some ideas for other fandoms but those remain as wips... honestly after this tsumiki one im not sure i will be writing for a while siebjfneofneod
4. What are your top five fics by kudos?
there's a fire in my brain and im burning up (itadori)
this tired old machine is a-rumbling (higuruma)
the devil's after both of us (itafushi)
oh, lay my curses out to rest (tokyo students + shoko)
oh, ashes ashes dust to dust (nobamaki)
(this makes me upset im not gonna lie cuz looking back and reading these im struck by how mid they are but sjdbdkneodks its whatever)
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
i do for the most part !! i love receiving comments and i want people to know how much i appreciate it :) i also love when ppl reply to comments i leave on their fics so i want to do the same
6. what's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
ummm my Curses series was more one-shots without actual plot.. and as many of those were shibuya or post shibuya they were all pretty angsty beifbekdjeodk. i wouldnt say any have this kind of ending because then there would have to be a story. but i would say the saddest one ive written is 'keep running for the sink but the well is dry'
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
'light of a new morning' for sure. this one actually had some kind of development i would say. also i have bias because this is one of the only three ive written that dont totally suck. though the tsumiki wip im working on for sure will have an even happier ending
8. do you get hate on fic?
im not popular enough for that lol
9. do you write smut?
no
10. do you write crossovers?
i had one in mind a while ago but it escaped me... i never have before but that doesnt mean i never will, even if it is unlikely
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
i dont think so
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
no but id be honored if so. especially if it was one im proud of
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
no, but im open to the idea
14. whats your all-time favorite ship?
i go through phases so i cant really answer this lol. my interest waxes and wanes. rn though im really obsessed with uroyuki and in a satosugu phase
15. whats a wip you want to finish but probably won't?
there is a shokohime wip i started two or so years ago about shoko's backstory and the developing of their relationship up until the present but at some point there was a research aspect to it and i thought 'ill do it later'. and then i never did 💀 id like to continue it but i still lowk think it will sit there.. i dont have enough motivation to do research ekdbfkenfkdk
there is also a trigun one i started, it was kind of plotless, just vibes, but i wasnt able to get their dialogue right and idk. maybe when i get into a trigun phase again ill find inspiration and continue
16. what are your writing strengths?
i think im good at describing a scene and emotions. im good at making this kind of poetry
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
im soooo shit at dialogue and even when im not shit at it i keep overthinking it and ruin it anyway lol
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
i mean ive done it (but i orphaned those... lol) and im doing it now for the tsumiki wip so its fine i guess. but id only do it for languages that i know and if not, after profuse grammar checking. also ofc it has to make sense within the context of the story
19. first fandom you wrote for?
septimus heap eiebdkwbdkebd it was so bad
20. favorite fic you've written?
ill do you one better and say three... and these are the not-mid ones
light of a new morning (tsumiki and itadori)
after hours (mob and reigen)
before-the-storm bloom (uroyuki)
my writing style changed a lot and i think these ones emulate the way it is now the best
idk 20 writers but tagging @that-was-anticlimactic @zukkaoru @blackhallow and anyone else who wants !!

Hi there!! I haven’t been in reading ac fic for a few months (I got very burned out, and I had low spoons and the only thing my brain could concentrate on was my fav movie, Tron: Legacy, so I watched that 20 times and then went through the Entire Ao3 Tag, front to back, back to front, I think I’ve read all of it at this point), but!! Today I started to slowly get caught up on your fics. I am now up to date on Eagle of Alamut and absolutely I am in love with it so so so much. I just. Ugh. Everything about it is so good. (I also love that you have it tagged as probably not a slow burn and it’s 60k+ and they haven’t met yet lmao. It’s a slow burn, but not because they are dancing around each other but cause they haven’t met yet lmaoooo).
I then read The Assassin, The Ghost, and The Heir, which was. Really good lol. I haven’t played GoT yet (I want to tho), and so I think the characters where a bit hard to follow for me personally, but I love all the moments with Darim and Desmond, and I loved Darim’s pov a lot.
And I’m probably gonna put Beloved Moon on my kindle to read, tomorrow?? Or maybe tonight who knows, I am in a reading mood, and my insomnia has been acting up so I’d probably have an update for you at like. 3 am lmao. (You might not remember me, but I was that anon who read The King, and the entirety of fiat mihi in one day, back before it had Altair’s pov chapter. So yeah. I read Fast. Oof).
I am, right now tho, rereading The Second cause it’s one of my all time favorite fics ever. And then I might reread Project Eurydice, cause those are also some of my favorites of all time, lol. A lot of your fics are on my favorites list 😅🥰
Ahhh, anyway, all this to say thank you for making such amazing fics!! I love them all so much, my favorite trope is time travel fix it, and you always do it so well <3 <3 <3 I’m also just giddy that my dumb adhd brain is letting me read AC fic again, and I guess I wanted to share, oof. Sorry for rambling at you, and I hope your week goes well!! 🖤🖤🖤
I’m glad you’re feeling better and please focus on your health first. My fics will always be there for you whenever you feel it. :)
Oh man, the ‘slow burn’ in Eagle of Alamut. Yeeeeaahhh… I’ve had comments about how it should count as a slow burn already. XD
I still remember I read one that was like: ‘this is hardcore slow burn, other slow burns wish they were this slow, and slow burn goals’ and I’m like “It’s… I mean… it’s not like I’m sure yet just how fast and how hard Altaïr is gonna fall in this one but… uuuhhh…”
I promise, if it takes a while for Altaïr to fall, I’ll change the tag to “holy shit it is slow burn i’m so sorry” XD
(But, teecup, when will Altaïr appear?) Uuuhhh… I might… be planning to do it… in a specific special date? Maaayybbeeee???
I’m glad you enjoyed The Assassin, The Ghost, and The Heir, I really enjoyed writing Darim’s POV and his interactions with Desmond (if you can, you should play GoT. It’s a really good game… although I don’t have any leg to stand on with my opinion since I grew up watching Kurosawa Akira films so the bias is definitely there. Even the PS4 version is so beautiful. If you can’t though, watching let’s play with or without comments is an alternative you can look into :) It’s very old timey samurai movie vibe).
Oh man, then I hope you enjoy quickly reading all the fics you haven’t read yet, hahahaha.
Aaawww, I’m so happy to read that and it always makes me smile knowing you guys reread the fics I write. The Second is probably one of my personal favorite Yew Branches but that’s mainly because it’s the first one I wrote and I had so much fun writing Desmond getting such a loving family. (Also, I’m a sucker for Darim and Desmond interactions of any kind XD)
Oh, man. Project Eurydice. Ngl, Old Master is still one of my favs mainly because it’s a 50k fic all posted in one chapter and it’s the only fic that AO3 was like “hey, dude, I know you’re trying to update but I can’t, there’s too much, you’ll be seeing this error-try again later page a lot, sorry, man”. It’s the main reason why any fics that exceed 30k get the multichapter fic treatment. (sometimes, I do still think if it should be better if I edit it to be multichaptered instead). I had hoped to write a new fic set on that one around Ratonhnhaké:ton’s birthday but April was… well… March and April were not cooperating with me this year. Maybe some other time. We’ll see XD
Feel free to ramble all you want here in my ask box or even in AO3. I always try to answer them with a bit of a ramble of my own XD

The Grishaverse Ship Survey Results
So! After all of that, we finally have the results! What is the general opinion on the ships in the Grishaverse? Well, that’s for you to read below! It’s actually pretty interesting and, while some parts make sense, there were definitely some parts which... surprised me... Anyway, onto the results!
Everything in this post can be split into:
The Grisha Trilogy
Six Of Crows Duology
The Nikolai Series
Shadow and Bone: TV Series
Most Enjoyed Ships
Least Enjoyed Ships
Crack Ships and Shipping Discourse
Notes from the Survey
(note from mod emily: i tried to bold all of fritz’ comments, but i might have missed a few! be aware there are two of us analysing here :))
The Grisha Trilogy
The first book series we asked about was, of course, the first chronologically: the Grisha Trilogy. The most popular ship, with 83% voters for this series selecting this, was Genya/David (Fritz was glad to hear that; Yes I am). This is likely due to the lack of alternate romantic interests in the series, which seems to be a major issue for Alina’s ships. It also seems to be one genuinely enjoyed by most fans, in contrast to Darkling/Alina and Mal/Alina (each around 30%) and Nikolai/Alina (just under 20%), for which I have definitely seen plenty of debate. The second and third most popular ships for this series were Tamar/Nadia (55%) and Nikolai/Zoya (47%). Interestingly, Genya/Alina (43%) and Zoya/Alina (30%) ranked surprisingly high, especially considering how few of my friends and associates I hear talking about them. Good for them!
Honourable mentions:
Alina/Sun (no doubt inspired by that crack fic I wrote a while back) (Still havent read that out of fear)
Alina alone (a common concept among those surveyed, though most mentioned it later)
Zoya/Genya or Alina/Zoya/Genya
Six Of Crows Duology
This series was a little less divided, I would say. Predictably, Kaz/Inej came out on top with a whopping 96% of voters (:relieved:), with Wylan/Jesper next (90%) and Nina/Matthias just after (83%). None of the others really came close, despite Nina/Inej gathering 35% of the votes and Colm/Aditi at 25% (yeah, I’m not sure why that was so popular on AO3 either, but nobody really has objections so I assume that’s why it amassed so many votes). As Six of Crows is decidedly less divisive about ships and doesn’t have such controversial ships (more on that later), it seems the fandom agrees with canon pairings and the votes are... pretty unanimous.
Honourable Mentions:
Jesper/Wylan/Kuwei
Polycrows (platonic or romantic)
Kaz/Inej/Nina
Whoever didn’t read the instruction about this being for only the book series and put Jesper/Milo. I will never escape.
The Nikolai Series
This one is a little harder for me because I actually haven’t read this... so over to Fritz for analysis! But first, the stats. At 85%, the most popular ship is Genya/David, followed by Zoya/Nikolai at 77%. Tamar/Nadia and Nina/Hanne draw at 61.5% and Nina/Matthias has 56% voters onboard. There’s no real honourable mentions for this one, sadly. Hello Fritz here! Read the books and very glad to see Genya/David as the top ship as it damn well should. Although still a bit surprising since its more of a side-arc of the two and only ties in with the importance of the story at a specific chapter that I feel like I don’t need to elaborate about, if you read Rule of Wolves. (I believe the popularity of the ship also sky-rocketed due to ROW) Following of course Zoya/Nikolai, the high ranking makes sense, it is the main ship and lets be honest they deserve it <3
I think the only really surprising thing about this is the high votes for Nina/Matthias since [SPOILERS CROOKED KINGDOM] he’s dead so I feel like people should move on from that. Nina/“Hanne” having not as high a ranking as I would’ve thought, but with Matthias still being in the frame I guess we shouldn’t be surprised either.
Shadow and Bone: TV Series
This one is really interesting, with the exclusive show watchers now taking part! We have 89% voting for Kaz/Inej, 76% for David/Genya, 71% for Matthias/Nina, 67% for Ivan/Fedyor (that’s a thing???-->Yeah they had a few somewhat sweet interactions in the background-->nvm i watched it you’re right fritz) and 62% for Mal/Alina. What’s really surprising is how high Malina is compared to Darklina, with Darkling/Alina at 36%. Who knows, maybe Fritz’ analysis can shed some light on this?
Yes yes Fritz to the rescue: First of all we have to see their interactions a little different from what we already knew of them by the end of episode 8. I still think it is a surprising number, since the Darkling in the show isn’t as nasty as he was in the books BUT over all his actions are now seen on TV. We all thought the deer antlers were a necklace amirite? Well no apparently not, the darkling used the worst kind of small science to fit Alinas collarbone to the bone and out comes a gruesome sight: a reason why many people might have started thinking: Wow what a disgusting person he is. And on the Malina “ship”: Mal finally has personality!! jkjk :eyes: Mals and Alinas friendship has been portrayed way better in the show and I believe that the people noticed more chemistry between them especially by the end of season 1. So I’m still a little surprised Darklina has such a low ranking (what with him being all sweet and cuddly in the middle of the show) but it makes sense and the Malina ship as well. Their vibes are just *chefs kiss* and thats coming from someone who didnt even like any of these “ships” <3
Loving the quotation marks for the word ‘ships’, Fritz. Over to the honourable mentions!
Honourable Mentions:
Jesper and Milo (isn’t milo a goat? guys, why?)
Nadia/Marie (huh that didn’t appear anywhere else)
One person had several - Kaz/Inej/Jesper, Dubrov/Mikhael, Dubrov/Mikhael/Mal - and yeah, you can really see the show differences in these mentions right? (whose dubrov...and whose mikhael...)
16% actually voted for Inej/Alina which is wild to me because of book context (they did have chemistry in the show tho :cowboi_smirk:)
Another person with several! We have Nina/Inej, Genya/Alina, Zoya/Alina, Zoya/Genya/Alina. Very sapphic. Good for you.
Kaz/Jesper and Nina/Inej all in one
That’s a lot of honour and mentions but it’s so interesting to me and I think you should see too
Most Enjoyed Ships
The most enjoyed ship was Kaz/Inej. This had unparalleled support, being at 35%. Jesper/Wylan, which was next on the list (23.5%) and Nina/Matthias (18%) were also pretty popular. Most of the others were quite low, though interestingly Mal/Alina only had 1 vote (plus one for the show version). Overall, the SoC ships were a lot more popular in this section, which makes sense - this part is really about your favourite ship, and those were more unanimous in the last sections.
Least Enjoyed Ships
Most people said Darkling/Alina, which got 47% of the NOTP votes. A lot more people disliked Darkling/Alina than liked Kaz/Inej. Make of that what you will, but I take it as a somewhat general agreement among many of you guys. Mal/Alina was also strongly disliked at 22%, but around a half or more of these were clarified to be about the book version of the ship specifically. They really must’ve upgraded in the show! Jesper/Kuwei and any other Darkling ships were also voted by a few, but all of these pale in comparison to the anti-Darklina votes. Shoutout to the person who said Apparat/Anyone. I agree, though it’s not something I thought of before seeing this response. Also one person said they didn’t like the poly ships, which I hope meant just the ones mentioned earlier and not all poly relationships in general... Another shoutout to whoever said Kaz/Heleen, because why did I have to read that. A fun question, all in all!
Crack Ships and Shipping Discourse
I love talking about crack ships, so let’s start with that! This time, I really don’t want to have to count and list because... well, let me show you:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that sums up the sheer variety, to be honest. Then again, it would be rude not to mention that the most popular were Jesper/Milo, Darkling/Nikolai and Alina/Sun. (If you’re still confused about that last one, I take full responsibility.)
YES KAZ/KRUGE I SUPPORT!!!
Honourable mention to this:
Tumblr media
which was a lot to take in, and:
Tumblr media
Now for the discourse. Yep, the part you probably came for.
Actually... maybe you didn’t? Looking at all of these responses, I see a lot of people genuinely don’t care about ship wars and so on, and often enjoyed the books regardless of the romances involved. Quite a few disapproved of the ongoing (though small) wars between Darklina and Malina, and others had a similar line of thinking, saying we should maybe stop focusing so much on it. You guys are right. I know this is a ship survey, and the conclusions should not include that shipping isn’t as important as we make it (Yes it should), but... that’s where it’s at.
And then again, a lot of you guys expressed disapproval for Darkling/Alina, discussing how it is often one-sided and manipulative and overall unhealthy, so I could be completely off with that last one. Some people mentioned that they ship this but as a slightly different version that the one given to us, recognising the flaws of the canon ship.
Someone said they headcanon Tolya as aroace (OMG YES!!). We need more aroace characters, so thank you for that headcanon :) We also have a few gay ships mentioned here, and one person telling us they love Malina. Yes, you’re right - it’s pretty unpopular, it turns out. Someone else said Alina should’ve been single, and I agree, actually!
One person rickrolled me here. Thankfully, Youtube’s ads saved me. *wipes forehead*
I leave you all with this, in the end:
Tumblr media
Notes from the Survey
Statistics Stuff:
The top ships were taken from AO3, so some ships may be more focused on in other books and may not provide accurate statistics for an earlier series.
The main circles this was sent around may have had bias as most people are from the same discord server, which has debated these topics in the past. Hence certain ships may have lower-than-average results. In future, this could be improved upon by sending this to other servers and areas of the fandom.
Personal bias may be present in the analysis, though I have tried to minimise this in the more formal sections.
Observations and Notes from Me:
You guys really don’t like Darklina. Or you love it. Usually one or the other. Wow.
Be glad I didn’t talk about any of the cursed ships in this. The things I have seen... ()
I thought more people would rickroll me, ngl.
What Surprised You Guys:
Kaz/Inej/Jesper
A few of you guys saw some of those cursed ships, and that surprised you. Well, me too!
Nikolai ships being in the TV Show section at all, what with his character not being in the show (yeah what was up with that huh tztz)
Inej/Alina
The existence of The Severed Moon
Darkling/Nikolai(/Alina)
How fun the quiz was :D
Things You Sent Me:
Bee Movie copypasta
“Nobody expects The Spanish Inquisition!”, except via an AO3 link
A fun fact about enzymes! I liked this one
Fic recs for Feriku and Sarai (esp for Wylan/Jesper shippers)
Another rickroll
Nice compliments :) aww you guys
I asked everyone for some kind of placeholder name and never used it. Sorry! But hey, anonymity, right?
Closing Statements
If you got this far (I feel like ive been sitting here for hours), thanks for reading! This was fun to do and I hope you enjoyed all of this too! The survey is still open for anyone who hasn’t done it but wants to. If I get a huge amount of new responses, I might update this post! But for now, adios!

alrighty megs i am asking you 1, 9, 10 but also for writing as well if that's different, 16, 28, 39, and 44 -hazel
hiya hazel! thanks for stopping by, i hope your weekend has been going well :))
1. how long ago did you start reading fanfic? writing fanfic? answered here, but i can answer in terms of 5sos fic! my ao3 history is a hard thing to gauge with bc i reread so much (and it only lists fics once for the last time you opened them, right? or am i thinking of something else) but according to that i started reading 5sos fic in early november 2020 which feels right bc i know i'd had this blog since august and it took me a while to warm up to the idea of rpf. i started writing fic in mid-december i think? early mid-december? idk somewhere around then
9. tag three fic writers you think are underrated/unknown in the fandom/fanfic community. gosh okay i have like, little awareness on how "big" writers are (and also i tend to just gravitate to fic writers whose work i trust and are established which means i don't get out of my bubble a lot) so i'm def leaving out people who deserve shoutouts but @valiantnerdtm is great and big susan summer is absolutely slept on (i'm holding off on reading the newest chapter til i'm in the right headspace but i am so excited!!) and while a lot of nyms stuff is Not Safe For Megs(tm), everything of nyms that i've read has been very good. @bandsanitizer did a wonderful job on the fic she wrote for me with fic exchange is just *chef's kiss* and i'm excited to see how her fic portfolio expands! @4thbrighteststar is a new face in the world of 5sos fic whose work has not blown up as much as it should yet (i mean have you read her ghost of you fic??? the fact that it has less than 20 kudos is a crime)
10. what's your favorite fandom, character, or pairing to read fic for? answered here, but i do have to admit that while i don't look at pairing when picking fics to read, i do think i naturally gravitate more towards lashton and malum plots? i think it's just that storylines that people choose to write for them are usually the ones i'm most interested in (also they were the pairing everyone was writing the most when i first started reading *and* they're what several of the authors i like tend to write more of than others) so as much as i'd love to say i have zero bias in terms of pairing,, i'm working on balancing the scales tho!
16. do you research for your fics? if so, how deep of a rabbit hole have you gone down by accident when researching? i research when i have to. i'm not really a big fan of it, which is why i try to write fics that aren't super research heavy (one of the many reasons i don't write many "canon-verse" fics) but i do it when necessary. probably the biggest rabbit hole was when i did some, uh, "hands on" research for seeing things in a different light where i actually went out and bought a watermelon and hacked it open with multiple oyster shells and lots of help bc my upper body strength is not it boss. also def the most dangerous thing i've ever done for writing bc my brother's friend who helped for a bit has a deadly shellfish allergy and he scraped his hand up on the shell so it could have ended very badly lol. but everyone was fine! only minor injuries occured and the watermelon tasted very good :))
28. how do you deal with writing pressure (ie: pressure to update, negative comments, deadlines, etc)? when it's influenced by external factors, i try to take a step back whenever possible. that's why i'm doing my whole "24 fic challenge" thingy, bc i saw how i was starting to fall into certain unhealthy thought patterns when it came to posting fic and how it was received and yada yada so i took what i could control and tried to set things up in a way that will keep the way i feel about my work healthy! (we'll see if it actually works once i start posting tho lol) as for things i can't control,, i kinda just don't deal with them very well? kldjflksd that sounds bad but also my resting state is worrying so most of the time i just sorta power through it while trying not to scream lol
39. what’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on? my dialogue! it's usually one of the first "positive" critiques i get whenever i'm in a critique group, and i think most of the time writing natural-sounding dialogue comes very easily for me
44. rant about something writing related. idk if this is the kind of rant you're looking for since it's more of, like, a personal vent, but i am really supremely tired of how hard it is for me to just. sit down and type words into a doc. it's not something that i only struggle with when i'm in a slump, it's something i deal with every time i write, even on "good writing days" and it sucks! i know it has a lot to do with how my brain is wired (aka not in a neurotypical way lol) but it's just frustrating! i would not be a slow writer if it was based on typing speed alone, but i am because i can rarely put a decent amount of words in one wip in one sitting. i wish i could, but i can't! it makes me want to take out my brain and go over it with a scrub brush and some dish soap but alas my skull does not have hinges and that is generally recommended by doctors. such is life.

[1/6 (Sorry!)] Lately I've seen posts in the vein of "Don't leave unsolicited concrit that's just called being an asshole" and that culture is a bit puzzling to me. Personally, I write long comments. Rarely under 100 words, usually 400-1500 (I hit the AO3 character limit all the time), almost always after re-reading the work (I read a lot on my phone but re-access the fics on my laptop for comments). I talk about my reaction to the story, gush about the ship, quote fave parts, all that stuff.
[2/6] As a writer myself, I also pay a lot of attention to people’s style and the technical aspects, and this is what I sometimes give concrit-like opinions about. Not story choices or headcanons, not random typos or anything, but I might say “I had a bit of a hard time following who was saying which lines in this section” or “the changing tenses in this part threw me off the loop for a bit”. I try to frame those things as personal opinions and say it’s up to the author if they want to -
[3/6] heed the advice or not. I’m not advocating the “tough love” type of feedback, either. At 14 I was targeted by some random adult in dA who methodically ripped apart everything I uploaded for months. I responded politely but I was pretty upset by her constant barraging disguised as helpful advice. (I just went to see her profile and interestingly she hasn’t been active at all since I eventually blocked her) So I know that the concept of concrit absolutely can be abused and how that feels.
[4/6]But in the past months I’ve seen a lot of people say that even 1-2 slightly critical sentences in a 1000+ word comment invalidates all the positives and “just leaves a sour taste”. Obviously I can’t say what people do or don’t feel but…I was honestly surprised by this mindset. I always assumed that when I write “Let me hear your thoughts” on my notes, it means “tell me what’s good and what’s bad”. Now I feel a bit weird about the positive comments I have - are they holding something back?
[5/6] Thing is, what made me quit writing for 5 years was not crushing feedback, but deafening silence. If I could choose between someone honestly engaging with my work, including its shortcomings, and not saying anything at all, I will take the criticism any day. I feel that explicitly asking for concrit deters the keysmashers and the cute one-line commenters, so I haven’t done that (I already say I welcome pretty much all feedback in my profile, but it seems no one reads those in AO3).
[6/6] Of course feedback is subjective and readers have no way of knowing what the author was thinking. BUT, I’d like to think readers are intelligent humans whose subjective views CAN be helpful. This is not a simple issue, and I’ll probably be even more careful about commenting in the future, but I simply can’t agree with posts that pretend there is zero difference between tearing a story apart and mentioning one suggestion in an essay of praise. (Some PM system in AO3 would be great tho)
First of all, thank you for your very thoughtful and well-phrased ask, dear anon. I always fear that i don’t do that kind of ask justice but i’ll try my best, sorry for the time it has taken me.
There’s been very different arguments in this debate, (check #the great comment debate), and i think you’re far from the only one with this opinion.
I do too think that there’s a difference between “tearing a story apart and mentioning one suggestion in an essay of praise“, as you said it, and i think the kind of feedback you described yourself as giving would be well-received by a big majority of writers.
And as I mention here and there, i think that assuming friendly intent is crucial to internet interaction, that lacks so much of the intonations and cues we use to understand what someone means.
I also sometimes fear that this entire debate leads to readers chosing not to give feedback at all, rather than risking hurting sensibilities, and well … that’s really not the point. “[C]rushing feedback” or “deafening silence“? Both are toxing to fandoms, both kill the joy in creating, but i really think there’s a lot of room to navigate in between.
What i try to do is get writers to make it a habit of specifying in the author’s notes what kind of feedback you enjoy. It seems to me the only reliable way of producing statisfactory interaction for readers and writers, to make up for the huge variety of attitudes towards fandom and feedback. Some of you may remember i’ve suggested it as an AO3 feature a long while back, but in the meantime just an author’s note with “I love all kinds of comments, long, short, criticism or not” or “Comments make me happy, but please no bashing” could do wonder to clarify things for the readership.
Also, if this can reassure you, i really don’t think your readers were holding back when they said positive things, nonnie.
Personally, when i read fanfic i just… genuinely don’t pay attention to potential flaws and weaknesses? That’s not the way i engage with the material. When reading fanfic, i’m more likely to spot gorgeous sentences, funny bits and great worldbuilding, and to try and remember them so i can tell the writer.
The more awkward or dull parts just..don’t register much, i kinda gloss over them and don’t try to actively keep them in my mind. It’s completely different when i beta-read: there i pay attention to both what i really like and what i’m indifferent towards, i’m in a very different mindset.
I don’t think that “positivity bias” makes my comments less honest.
Pffffuh, this has turned into unstructured rambling, sorry for that (but also my browser has crashed three times so i’ll just put the blame on that). Hope you continue to delight writers with long, thoughtful reviews, those are SO nice to get
