Comic Todo List
So the sky is the limit now that I’ve got Marvel Unlimited access and I’ve maybe already bit off more than I can chew, but I wanted to go through the series I’ve added to my library on MU and state my interest in them so I don’t forget what I was thinking.
And to be clear, my attention span is super short right now since I just got the app. I like the idea of reading 500 xmen comics in a row…but not yet. So my balking point for issue counts is incredibly low right now but that will change after the first pass of reading a bunch of short series.
Also addendum to my last post: I read like 25 issues of Agent Venom and he’s my blorbo, that was pre college
Man Thing ‘74
22 issues is a bit much for my lack of strong interest here, but I’d like to see some old spooky stuff sometime
Black Panther ‘77
A bit long for how old it is and my current interest but I’ll get around to it.
What If ‘77
44 issues, but some real classics. I wish they had them all in one place.
Contest of Champions ‘82
3 issue crossover, no brainer
Secret Wars ‘84
Short, sweet, never read it all the way
Kitty Pryde and Wolverine ‘84
Short xmen primer
Scarlet Witch and Vision ‘85
12 issues for some classic avengers
Beauty and the Beast ‘85
Seems like a small hidden gem
Strange and Doom ‘89
One shot, easy
Infinity Gauntlet ‘91
Always surprised by how small these crossovers are lengthwise on the core story
Spiderman 2099 ‘92
Long but I want to remember to check out all of 2099
Inhumans ‘98
Short primer on them
Contest of Champions II ‘99
Too funny not to read
Garth Ennis Punisher ‘00

A Beginner’s Guide to Marvel Zombies
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This article contains spoilers for Marvel’s What If…?
Man, Marvel’s What If…? series really does draw you in with a false sense of security, doesn’t it? The first episode is an adorable romance story laced with punching Nazis. The second is a tribute to a late actor in the form of galactic utopia. Then we get the Avengers being murdered, the universe being melted, and now Captain America eating human flesh. Enjoy your nightmares, kids!
The fifth episode of What If…? is a bit of a fanservice choice. For the latter half of the 2000s, Marvel was riding the Marvel Zombies train like nothing else.
While the first use of the concept came in 2005, one could consider What If…? v.2 #24 (What If Wolverine Was Lord of the Vampires?) to be the prototype. The story involved Dracula turning the X-Men into vampires, but Wolverine’s healing factor allowed him to overwhelm Dracula’s control and fight back. He then littered New York City with vampire heroes and humanity’s last hope came in the form of the Punisher wearing Dr. Strange’s cape.
Mark Millar
The first real use of Marvel Zombies was more of a prank than anything else. Mark Millar and Greg Land were doing Ultimate Fantastic Four and all signs pointed to the idea that they were setting up a crossover. Not just any crossover, but THE crossover. Marvel had been adamant about the Ultimate Universe being separated from main continuity, but solicitations and covers made it seem like the two Reed Richards counterparts were going to meet up. Much of Ultimate Fantastic Four #21 played into this with Ultimate Reed conversing with an alternate universe Reed who very much resembled the mainstream one. Ultimate Reed created a portal to go visit him.
What he found was zombie incarnations of the Fantastic Four with Reed asking, “Ever had the feeling you’ve been had?”
Robert Kirkman
The rest of the arc was about Ultimate Reed trying to survive and escape that world with the help of that world’s Magneto. This set the stage for the first Marvel Zombies miniseries, written by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman with art by Sean Phillips (Arthur Suydam did zombie parody covers of classic Marvel art, which would continue for several more miniseries). Initially, Kirkman wanted to do a story about Luke Cage being the last hero alive, playing up his unbreakable skin as a deterrent, but since the Ultimate Fantastic Four arc already depicted Zombie Luke Cage, that was off the table.
Instead, his story involved two main arcs. One was the survival of Black Panther, who – much like the animated What If…? episode – was kept alive, albeit with his limbs being gradually removed for the sake of being zombie food without infecting the body. While the cartoon had Scott Lang’s disembodied head, the comic had a decapitated Zombie Wasp as Panther’s ally. She was never cured of the disease, but she did stop being hungry after a while and came to her senses.
The other story was about Earth’s zombified heroes dealing with the coming of the Silver Surfer and Galactus. A handful of them went on to devour the invaders and absorb their cosmic powers, along with their cosmic hunger. Hank Pym, Iron Man, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Spider-Man, and the Hulk went on to wipe out nearly all life in the universe as the Zombie Galacti. The follow-up was the basis for Marvel Zombies 2.
As for what caused the zombie outbreak in the beginning, that’s where things get a little hairy. The Ultimate Fantastic Four story revealed that a Zombie Superman (recolored to be the Sentry so as not to piss off DC) got so hungry that he punched reality until breaking into an alternate universe and infecting its heroes.
Kirkman and Phillips did a one-shot prequel called Marvel Zombies: Dead Days that suggested that Magneto bartered with some force to unleash the virus on Earth, thinking that it would only target humans and not mutants. Then a later miniseries called Marvel Zombies Return created an alternate universe time-loop where the zombies from Marvel Zombies continuity ended up in another universe, where they caused an outbreak, infected that world’s Sentry, and Zombie Sentry ended up popping into the Marvel Zombies universe to cause the initial outbreak.
Did anybody follow that? I hope so. Either way, Zombie Sentry was never mentioned again. He infected the heroes and then…nothing. Just a loose plot thread. Weird. Though fitting that the Sentry stopped being a threat because people forgot about him.
Crossovers
The initial Marvel Zombies universe was revisited here and there in several ways. Black Panther’s comic (during when he was leader of the Fantastic Four) journeyed into that universe and dealt with the Zombie Galacti. Ash from Army of Darkness got his own cool crossover miniseries taking place during the initial outbreak. Zombie Wolverine showed up in an Exiles story about a team made entirely out of Wolverine variants. Zombie Deadpool (Headpool) became a major part of the short-lived Deadpool Corps. Marvel Zombies also did a crossover with Marvel Apes.
There was also a one-shot called Marvel Zombies Halloween that revealed that Kitty Pryde and her son survived, while also showing what Mephisto was up to in this reality.
Fred Van Lente
With Marvel Zombies 3, Fred Van Lente started writing and brought the series in a different direction. He introduced ARMOR, a SHIELD offshoot based on dealing with alternate realities. While it still dealt with the Marvel Zombies universe, focus was more on the mainstream Marvel universe as it tried to prevent an invasion. The protagonists for the story were Machine Man and Jocasta. In the follow-up, Marvel Zombies 4, Morbius brought the Midnight Sons back together to save the world from a possible outbreak.
Van Lente’s swansong was Marvel Zombies 5, which was about Machine Man and Howard the Duck venturing into different zombie universes for reasons. After that came Marvel Zombies Supreme, taking place in regular Marvel continuity and featuring Battlestar and Jack of Hearts fighting zombie versions of the Squadron Supreme. Then came the last gasp for the line with 2012’s Marvel Zombies Destroy, where ARMOR sends Howard the Duck and Dum Dum Dugan to fight an alternate reality filled with zombie Nazis.
The Zombie Saga Continues
They did get a shot in the arm a few years later with Secret Wars. The event featured a world made up pieces of alternate Earths, haphazardly connected together. There’s a No Man’s Land on this Earth that’s filled with zombies and homicidal robots. It’s basically a place to dump criminals for execution.
A couple more stories were released, though neither had any connection to the original Marvel Zombies or the stuff with ARMOR. Marvel Zombie was a one-shot about a band of heroes trying to survive a zombie apocalypse, who end up teaming with Simon Garth, Marvel’s Zombie. The ending is…well, it sure is something.
More recently is Marvel Zombies: Resurrection. This one is about the Brood infesting and killing Galactus. The race evolves into a hivemind of zombies, all very interested in infecting Franklin Richards. The heroes for this one include Spider-Man, a Sentinel reprogrammed to be Franklin and Valeria’s nanny, a blind Wolverine, a techno-organic Frank Castle, and a SUPER EXCITED Blade.
Also of note is Marvel Universe vs. The Punisher and its sequels (Marvel Universe vs. Wolverine and Marvel Universe vs. The Avengers). This reality also dealt with a zombie superhero apocalypse, but in a different and more coherent way. Instead of being a virus, it was a bio weapon let loose into the ecosystem. That meant that presumably everyone was going to succumb to it eventually, turning into a savage cannibal. The Punisher, who was inadvertently behind the mess and was immune, would spend his days hunting down and beheading heroes. Also, he’d have to kill Deadpool on a nearly daily basis.
That’s Marvel Zombies in a nutshell.

A/N:  I know I said this would be the last chapter buuuuut....stay tuned for more!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Molly grips the edge of the counter her sink rests in as she takes a deep breath.  She tries to concentrate on the patterns in her bathroom walls as Erik does his work between her legs.
“How you feelin?”  He asks, looking up at her with a slight smirk.
Molly bites her lip, thinking about how she couldn’t believe she happening.  “It’s good, so far.”
Erik nods.  “Bet.  Lift that other leg up a bit.  I ain’t tryna miss nothin, you know?”
He taps her inner thigh with the back of his hand until she got the message, spreading herself further.
“You ever do this before?”  Molly asked nervously.
Erik bobs his head here and there.  “Ehhh, only one time I remember a female being really down for it, but everyone else is like, offended and shit.”
Molly exhales in disbelief, “Aww, for real?  Tsk, this saves me some wrist strain.  It’s nice to be offered, cuz I definitely wasn’t askin, who would?  Just don’t do too much, being an Edward Scissorhands and shit.”
Erik flexed his dimples as he licked his lips in concentration of her center.  He had already put in most of the work already, he just wanted to get to her outer lips a little.
Taking the razor in one hand, he places one finger against her outer labia for a flatter surface area, dragging the blade along her skin with the grain.  The scratchy sound of the razor taking down the stubble is the soundtrack to the room as Molly holds her breath awaiting him to finish.  She wanted to stroke his locs, but figured that would mess up his flow.  He wipes the razor off, repeating the process until she was clean.
Erik nods, surveying his work with pride.  “There’s more than one way to skin a cat, but I think this is my favorite.”
Molly looks down for herself, feeling her freshly shaved exterior.  “Yeahhh, look at that?  You ever thought about doing this professionally?”
Erik stands in front of Molly, doing his shrug with a silly face.  “I don’t think I have.  But when I look into it, you can write my recommendation, in detail.”
Their shared laughter slowly faded into blank expressions as Molly felt herself heat with anxiety.  She studied Erik’s eyes dilating, plush lips just inches from hers, she wasn’t quite sure how to proceed.
Erik licks his lips. “You wanna do somethin else, now?” his voice saturated with testosterone fueled bass.
Molly stares at him, eyes wide, swallowing to keep her voice steady.  “Uh, I think you wanted to watch somethin on the TV….right?”
Erik looks down Molly’s body before returning to her face.  “If that’s it, you may wanna bring that leg down again.”
Molly curses under her breath as she pulls her dress back down, crossing her ankles.
Erik chuckles, “You actin shy NOW is too damn funny.  That’s cool though, I’m bout to head out.”
Molly looks after him heading out her bathroom door.  “Wha-what about a nightcap?  My Netflix list is really thick, if you still wanna chill!”  She gets up to go after him.
Erik picks his jacket off her couch walking for her front door.  “Nah, I ain’t really been into what’s available anyway.”
As Erik turns back to her once more, Molly rubs her arm, wondering how to leave their conversation.  “Um, well, thanks for the shape up?”
Erik flashed his golds, lookin at the floor, “Yeah, thanks for trusting me with a razor after a drink.”
Molly stands there until she squints at him suspiciously.  “And that’s really gonna be it?  My pussy was on full display, and you ain’t tryin shit?”
Erik cocks his head to the side. “You tryna see my dick to call it even?”
Molly wheezes with embarrassment.  “Whaaaaa? Who said that? Don’t try me, ol boy!”
Erik steps to Molly, lookin straight down in her face, “You don’t act like you ready to try a damn thing, witcha shy actin ass,”  Erik says, practically growling.
Molly, gulps again.  Soon as Erik closes in on her, she is a puddle.  “I just don’t know you for real, or what to expect, you know?  It’s-”
Erik shakes his head, “See, you already thinkin too much bout it.  I’m here, you here.  I’m cool, you fine as hell...and I know you think the same.”
Molly kisses her teeth, “Nigga, don’t flatter yourself.”
ERik raises an eyebrow, “I could see it for myself.  The towel was necessary back there-”
Molly pops him in his arm, hurting herself more than him.  “Whatever, boy!  Go on then, I’m good.”
“You good?”
Molly nods.
Erik leans his head down hovering over her mouth.  They look in each other’s eyes for what seemed like an eternity, before Molly closes the gap.  Slowly they sucked on each other’s lips, like ripened fruit.  Molly caught herself leaning into a little further than she consciously meant to, before Erik pulls back.
“Maybe you ain’t so shy.  We’ll see though.  Call me when you need another appointment, Moll.”
Molly closes the door after him, leaning on the doorframe, completely hot and bothered.
----
“And that’s all that happened?”  Issa asks her incredulously over a stack of chicken and waffles.
Molly shrugs, pickin at her food, “Girl, that was it.  My snatch was all there for him to do what he wanted, but all he did was help a sistah out.”
“Well I wish a nigga would offer me some salon care if I needed to clear some brush.  That oughta be a requirement.”
Molly laughs, “Could you imagine niggas going to a trade school to learn that because that’s what needs to be done to get pussy?”
“Shit, they do that for cars, clothes, and shit.  Get some skills that are useful for once, save a bitch a dollar.”
“Right?  So….. I don’t know.  He told me to call him if I need a touch up.”  Molly says.
Issa looks at Molly suspiciously, “Now, did he really say that, cuz he startin to sound kinda….” her voice trails off as she wiggles her hand side to side.
Molly screws her face up, “No, dang!  It’s a euphemism, no doubt.  But, I don’t know….”
Issa shrugs, “I know you not gettin cold feet after he has literally played with ya pussy already.  Somethin backwards about that.”
Molly waves her hands, “I know!! It just seemed too intimate to do that and NOT have sex.  I ain’t ready to be wifin niggas up or nuthin.”
“Girl, I’m sure he playin you as hard as you playin him, so don’t think too much.  Just call him up cuz I know you hate clingy dudes, so make your plans.”
Molly pulls out her phone side eyeing Issa.  “Pssh, whatever, miss know-it-all.  Swear you know somebody life.”  Molly grumbles under her breath.  As she texts Erik, she asks Issa, “What about T’Challa though?  When’s your movie date?”
“Umm, supposed to be tomorrow.  And it’s not a date, it’s just...an outing between colleagues to blow off steam.”
Molly scoffs putting down her phone.  “Is that what we callin it these days?  Is that why you asked me about the vaginal rejuvenation buy one get one free promo on Groupon?”
Issa rolls her eyes.  “Female hygiene/reproductive health is important.”
“Bullshit, you gettin ya walls waxed for a slip and slide.”  Molly quips.
“Ok!  I don’t even know what he is down for.  He from the motherland and everything, he might be saving himself.”
Molly pauses, pressing her fist to her mouth.  “It is the biggest misconception that these foreign fools out here all high and mighty, chaste.  Sure there’s some, but TRUST men are men, across all borders.  Food and women:  serve it up, they eatin.”
Issa talks out the side of her mouth.  “Everyone ‘cept you apparently….”
“Aight you can pay your own meal if you wanna talk.”
“Nooo!  I love you!  You’re so great!  Pussy is bomb, sure he gon nom!”  Issa sings beggingly.
---
The evening of the associate outing with T’Challa was less than an hour away, and Issa took her place at the mirror.  Looking at her fiercest rival, herself, she catches a rhythm in her head and start bobbing, feelin herself.
Yo, I been peeped that you really feelin me.
So the next step oughta come quite  naturally.
You can make ya move, but remember I’m the driver.
Don’t want a minute man, don’t even think of gettin tired.
Movie popcorn too high priced, it’s really wack
So how about you try making this nani ya snack?
New name alert, you can her goldfish
Make this pussy smile back, dip in my well and make a wish--
Issa sighs heavily, “Why you so damn horny?”  she touches up her eyebrows as her phone goes off.  T’Challa texts her saying he is on the way to the theatre.  Issa confirms, saying she is too.  She spends another fifteen minutes touching up her face and taking pictures for the ‘gram before heading out in her car.
Issa bops to her Frank Ocean, getting good vibes and feeling completely full and ready for this night.  It was really starting to feel like a stress reliever.
Suddenly a bump hits her tire.  Issa stills herself as her car rolls violently and rickety down the street.  The rhythmic plop of her tire with every rotation signaled she just made herself a flat tire.
“Shit, shit, nooo!”  Issa curses out loud as she pulled over to the first lear space she could find on the side of the road.  Getting out she begrudgingly surveyed the damage: completely flat.
“Fuck!  Why me!”  Issa yelled to the sky as she clopped over to lean on her car in frustration.  Alone in a cute outfit with brokedown transportation at night wasn’t the best situation for her to be in so she pulls her phone out to call T’Challa and cancel first.
He picks up on the first ring.  “Hello, Ms. Issa.  Are you close?”
Issa picks at the hem of her shorts.  “No, I gotta give you a raincheck, I’m sorry.”
T’Challa sighs disappointed.  “Ahh, did you have other plans then?”
Issa double checks her surroundings.  “I wish I did right now, but no I’m not trying to skip out, my car just gave up on me.”
“Oh, do you need a ride?”  T’Challa asks with a little more perkiness.
Issa pauses.  “Uh, I guess, if you don’t mind?  I don’t want to put you out since you’re already there.”
“Oh no!  It is ok.  Please, just let me know where you are.”  T’Challa says.
She can hear his keys jingling as she tells him her address, going back in her car to wait.
T’Challa’s car pulls up behind hers.  He gets out leaning on her driver’s side.  “That’s a nasty flat.”
Issa sighs, “I needed new tires anyway.  I was waiting for a bonus at work, but why not now, right?”
T’Challa looks at her empathetically, stroking his chin.  “Life has a funny way of doing things like that.”
Issa nods, looking at the time on her phone, groaning with disappointment.  “The movie already started.  We won’t get another showing for another two hours.  I knew I should’ve let you go on home instead of getting me, now that we can’t make the show.”
T’Challa wears a long face.  “I was really looking forward to that show about….the dog?”
Issa chuckles, “Yeeaah, that meets the robot and they save Wall Street?”
T’Challa smiles, the apples of his cheeks invading his facial structure.  “Ahh, an Oscar worthy film, indeed.   Shame to miss…..well at least let me take you home then.”  T’Challa opens her car door as he guides her to his.
“Thank you again, I really appreciate it.”  The ride to her house was quiet.  Issa wasn’t sure what to say since the night was presumably over, but it could also not be over.  She was a grown woman, without a curfew or a parent at home, who could tell her what not to do.  But she certainly didn’t feel comfortable enough to have him burn his gas to turn around and go somewhere else now.  Issa sneaks a look over a T’Challa concentrated on the road.  His arm outstretched, toned and shapely with not so humble muscles.  His long, knuckly hands grip the wheel, subtly massaging the rim.  Issa checks her phone to pass the time, coming up with a game plan as he pulls up to her spot.
He drops his hands to his lap, looking over at Issa.  “Well here we are, Ms. Issa.  If you want to go get your car in the morning, let me know.  I don’t mind at all helping out.  Do you have a spare?”
Issa shakes her head, “No...responsibility isn’t my strongest characteristic.”
T’Challa smirks, “I don’t see you that way at all.  You have many talents as I have seen, and you are a great help to me and the team.”
Issa cheeses, “Well, if you say so, I’ll take it!”
T’Challa leans his head on the headrest.  “It’s true, you are a smart woman.   That’s how I know we can be a success.  It’s not lost on me the cultural differences between me and the community here, but with you as a liason, I can make sure no one is offended or lost in my accent.”
Issa chuckles, “It’s all good.  That lady and her kids were really just looking for a fight.  People aren’t always at their best when accepting help so expect some struggle, but I hear you, no problem at all to bridge that gap.  As for the accent, keep that.  It’s a great ice breaker.”
“You think so?”
“Oh yeah.  People perk up to it automatically to listen closer, so if you have meaningful shit to say, it’ll land quicker.  Plus it’s sexy as…..”  Issa’s voice fades as she catches herself saying too much.
T’Challa tucks his lips and nods, looking ahead as they sit for a while in silence.  Issa cursed herself for getting too forward but also, it had to be said; or at least she convinced herself of that.  How else could she try to lay claim to him without a little flirting?  Issa wasn’t ready to call it a night, so she worked up some inner hood nerve.
“So, you wanna come up or nah?!”  Issa asked with a little too much bass in her voice.
T’Challa looked at her half like she was crazy but slowly smiled.  “You would like some company?”
Issa clears her throat nodding, “I mean, sure.  I’m reclaiming my time!  Just cuz we can’t see a new movie doesn’t mean we can’t hang out.  If you want to, you got the green light….”  Issa’s voice trails off as she studies T’Challa’s reaction.
He takes his keys out of the ignition.  “That sounds like a wonderful idea.”
Issa and T’Challa make their way up to her place, going in she turns on the light.  “Sorry for the mess.  I stay unprepared for company.”
T’Challa stands surveying the surroundings.  “Oh, it’s alright.  I’m just content to be invited.”
Issa picks some clothes off of the couch and cups from the table.  “Please, sit.  Do you drink?”
T’Challa sits, picking up a pillow, studying its design.  “Occasionally; I wouldn’t mind a glass.  Who is this?”
Issa pulls out a bottle looking back at him staring at the pillow.  “Oh that’s Frank Ocean.  Have you heard him?”
T’Challa shakes his head.  “No, but you must think highly of him.”
Issa screws her face up as she pours some cheap moscato.  “I mean, he cool.  I just really liked the pillow.”
T’Challa reads her reaction.  “You don’t have to be embarrassed, it’s cute.”
Issa nods and whispers a cheer to herself at being called cute as she walks the glasses over to him.  “Yeah, I’m a big music head.  Nicki Minaj is around here somewhere but she may be on time out anyway.  Gettin all loud and outta pocket.”
T’Challa laughs into his glass as he sips.  “I see.  Well, it’s nice to see someone laying down the law in their home.”
Issa gulps her drink as his vice dropped to a sexy octave.  “Mhm!  That’s me!  All business round here.”
T’Challa leans forward putting his drink down.  “Well we aren’t on the clock now, thank goodness.  This week was very crazy.”
“The craziest!  But that should be a sign that it’s on the way for the better now.”
T’Challa turns to Issa, looking at her a little too long.  “Wise words from an attractive woman.”
Issa was internally screaming at this blunt response, but laughs it off to keep the mood light.  “Well the lighting in here is deceptive sometime, and I had a pimple this morning, so...”
“No joke, don’t sell yourself short.”  T’Challa says as he leans towards Issa, who was not ready, but became completely ready to try him on.  They embrace slowly.  His lips plush against hers, his hands remain at a gentlemanly section of her leg as her heart beats out of her chest.  The associate outing just got a little personal.

X-Men

Why The MCU Is a Crowning Achievement (and Why Endgame is So Cool)
By Don Hall
I remember learning to read from Marvel comic books.
The Fantastic Four. Spider-Man. The X-Men. The Avengers.
I learned my words from them. I started with the pictures and would ask my mom what the words meant and she’d patiently walk me through enough of them that my interpretive skills honed in on the stories of ordinary people gifted and cursed with enormous abilities doing their best to navigate their relationships while alternately saving the world over and over became the mantra of my upbringing.
First and foremost, my literary education from Marvel comics spawned a love for science fiction in general. I read Asimov’s Foundation trilogy in fifth grade. I didn’t understand whole sections of them but I read them nonetheless. By the time I was in sixth grade, Huxley’s Brave New World, Vonnegut’s The Sirens of Titan, and Dick’s Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? sat on a shelf next to The Amazing Spider-Man #206 (Peter Parker Goes WILD!), The Avengers #181 (Still Only 35¢!!), and the King Size Special Fantastic Four (Twice as Many Pages! Twice as Many Thrills!).
When I was eight years old in 1974, my first black girlfriend and I bonded over our mutual love of Luke Cage. When I was nine, Mike Eddie (who was two years older and a bit of a juvenile delinquent) and I would go out to an abandoned housing project and kick in the drywall in reenact Wolverine vs. Hulk fights. He was a foot taller than I but I was always the Hulk.
The 1981 release of Fantastic Four #232 (“Back to Basics”) introduced John Byrne to the storyline and I lived through the trauma of Reed Richards and Susan Storm having a miscarriage, the Thing quitting the team and She-Hulk becoming his replacement. The formation of the West Coast Avengers. Vision marrying the Scarlet Witch. Jean Grey becoming the Dark Phoenix. The Giant-Sized crossover team ups with splash pages that were huge, epic and often included almost everyone battling things out on the same canvas.
Sometime around my sophomore year in high school, my boxes and boxes of comics (none in any kind of sale-able shape because I’d read each one so many times they all looked like they’d been, well, read a hundred times by a grubby, dirty kid) went into the basement. I was in high school and the social weight was just too important.
“Just because you have superpowers, that doesn’t mean your love life would be perfect. I don’t think superpowers automatically means there won’t be any personality problems, family problems, or even money problems. I just tried to write characters who are human beings who also have superpowers.” — Stan Lee
Sure, I read DC comics as well but they seemed sillier to me. Batman was cool but he was super rich and I had little in common with Bruce Wayne. Not like I did with Peter Parker. I enjoyed Superman but the existence of Krypto and Mister Mxyzptlk felt more comic and less book. That said, in 1978, when Christopher Reeve flew and saved the world by spinning time backward, I felt like the movie was made just for me. So much so that in 2006 when I saw the homage to Reeve and 1978 in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, I bawled like a baby as the credits and music started the film. Unlike almost everyone else on the planet, I loved and love Superman Returns.
More than Star Trek, more than Star Wars, it has been the creation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that has been the filmic journey I’ve been waiting for since I started to use language. The many attempts at the Fantastic Four onscreen have been pretty much crap yet I still kind of loved them anyway. The first time I saw Hugh Jackman bar fighting as Logan in Singer’s X-Men movie, an electricity went up my spine and the hair on my neck stood up because here, finally, was a real life version of the character I had followed for decades.
For a moment, let’s look at the ridiculous improbability of Marvel’s achievement.
What became known as the Marvel Era (when the comics company went from being known as Atlas Comics to Marvel) began in 1961 with the launch of The Fantastic Four. A lot can be said (and has been) about Stan Lee but with his incredible sense of timing, he introduced superheroes designed for an adult audience rather than the silliness of earlier comics creations. His heroes were not gods or from outer space (at least not at first) — they were humans gifted with extraordinary powers who still squabbled, dealt with betrayal, the consequences of fame, paying bills, self-doubt, depression, alienation on societal levels. His heroes grappled with the assassination of Kennedy, with the Vietnam War, and the Civil Rights Movement.
Marvel invented the ComiCon in 1975. They created their own Code when the Comics Code started restricting storylines about drug abuse and civil rights. The multiverse of crossovers was intense but by the middle of the 1990s, Marvel filed for bankruptcy. The industry was glutted and the Marvel Universe was too unwieldy. In 1998, with new money, the Marvel Entertainment Group was formed, pulled the company out of red ink, and cooperated with outside movie studios to create the Blade Trilogy, X-Men, and Raimi’s Spider-Man triptych. The first Marvel film was in 1944 with a fifteen-chapter serial featuring Captain America, and the company didn’t revisit the movies until 1986 with Howard the Duck. In 1989 and 1990 they gave us The Punisher and another shot at Captain America, both turds.
The cinematic attempts were spotty and infrequent and were, with a few exceptions, unremarkable.
Then came Iron Man. Kevin Feige saw the film and decided on the post-credits sequence introducing Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury and the most improbably huge series of cinematic dominos came into play.
“The Avengers films, ideally, in the grand plan are always big, giant linchpins. It’s like as it was in publishing, when each of the characters would go on their own adventures and then occasionally team up for a big, 12-issue mega-event. Then they would go back into their own comics, and be changed from whatever that event was. I envision the same thing occurring after this movie, because the Avengers roster is altered by the finale of this film.” — Kevin Feige
When 2012’s The Avengers finally arrived, it was as if I had been waiting my entire life for it.
Twenty-one movies. Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk. Ant Man, Black Widow, Dr. Strange, Hawkeye. The Falcon, War Machine, Captain Marvel. The Black Panther, The Winter Soldier, Loki, The Guardians of the Galaxy. Spider-Man. A collective $18.6 billion in ticket sales. All one giant continuous storyline. All leading up to a singular massive crossover film.
There are some duds in the mix. The first two Thor films were lackluster but the decision to keep him in the MCU lead to Thor: Ragnarok, which is one of the best films in the twenty-one complete with a reference to the Planet Hulk storyline and suddenly making one of the least cool Marvel characters ever cool. Iron Man 2 is rough and Avengers: Age of Ultron is like watching the whole series struggle with how to set the stage for Endgame.
Sony finally allowed Marvel to include Spider-Man and Michael Keaton’s Vulture is amazing. Black Panther was not only a great movie but a jewel in a cultural shift in Hollywood. They had to go to Netflix to get Daredevil, Luke Cage, and The Punisher right but those shows are good.
When I was a kid, I loved The Planet of the Apes series but the only way to watch Chuck Heston find himself on future Earth where apes could talk was on network TV with the infrequent marathons. My mom would set up a card table covered with a sheet in front of the 20-inch screen. I’d get a pillow, soda, and a bowl of candy and watch all night long.
With Marvel, I don’t need the card table or candy but I still feel like a wide-eyed kid when I boot up any part of the MCU.
I can’t wait for the final chapter.

9 key moments in the Black Panther's 50-year evolution
Tumblr media
The Black Panther hits theatres this week, and the hysteria and hype surrounding the movie is very, very real.
Starring Chadwick Boseman as the Black Panther and directed by Ryan Coogler (Creed), it's the first film in the Marvel Universe to feature majority Black actors, be helmed by a Black director and be set in a (fictional) African country. Not since Wesley Snipes' Blade has a Black superhero been given such a red-carpet treatment.
In fact, Snipes recently revealed that he tried, unsuccessfully, to get a Black Panther picture off the ground in the '90s.
"I think Black Panther spoke to me because he was noble, and he was the antithesis of the stereotypes presented and portrayed about Africans, African history and the great kingdoms of Africa," he told the Hollywood Reporter. "It had cultural significance, social significance. It was something that the Black community and the white community hadn't seen before."
WhileBlade, released in 1998, ended up being the first hit film based on a Marvel character. Black Panther is on track to be another runaway success, both financially and in its cultural significance. Just take a look at the hashtag #whatdoesblackpanthermeantome, which shows zealous fans remarking on the significance of seeing positive Blackrepresentation on the big screen (everybody owes it to themselves to watch this particularly joyous reaction).
But it was a long road to get here. Below, we trace the key moments in the history of the Black Panther.
The Coal Tiger
Marvel founder Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby are credited with first coming up with the idea for Black Panther in the mid-'60s, although Kirby's original design and what we see today are drastically different. In fact, even the name was different during the conceptual stage, with Kirby originally calling the hero Coal Tiger.
The Coal Tiger was a regal, albeit old fashioned-looking hero with no mask, complete with a bright yellow jumper and matching boots overtop black tights. Thankfully, this version never made it to print and only exists as a conceptual sketch, seen here.
Tumblr media
The original concept for the Black Panther by Jack Kirby. (Marvel)
"I came up with the Black Panther because I realized I had no Blacks in my strip," Kirby said in an interview, highlighting the fact that even during the civil rights era — a time when Black musicians saw unprecedented crossover success — Black representation was still a huge blind spot in comics. "It suddenly dawned on me — believe me, it was for human reasons — I suddenly discovered nobody was doing Blacks. And here I am a leading cartoonist and I wasn't doing a Black."
The Black Panther vs. the Black Panther party
The Black Panther made his official comic book debut in the Fantastic Four, Vol. 1 No. 52 in July 1966, which is the same year the Black Panther party was founded (though some months later). While the comic book and party were not affiliated, they both tapped into the social consciousness of the day, especially in light of recent events such as Malcolm X's assassination and the Watts riots in California. Despite being across the country from each other — Marvel in New York's garment district, the Black Panther founding members in Oakland, Calif. — the comic and the party became intertwined. They both served the need to represent Black Americans, with Marvel choosing to do so by introducing the character of T'Challa, the leader of a fictional country called Wakanda.
"At that point I felt we really needed a Black superhero," Lee told the Huffington Post in 2016. "And I wanted to get away from a common perception. So what I did, I made him almost like [Fantastic Four's] Reed Richards. He's a brilliant scientist and he lives in an area that, under the ground, is very modern and scientific and nobody suspects it because on the surface it's just thatched huts with ordinary 'natives.' And he's not letting the world know what's really going on or how brilliant they really are."
An African utopia
To Lee's point, Wakanda is an African country that was never colonized, due in part to its advanced technology that allowed Wakandans to hide their country from the rest of the world. This idea of an African utopia remained throughout the comic book's history, echoed in the rallying cry "Wakanda forever" from the 2018 film, one that has since been embraced by the film's stars.
From his first appearance, readers were introduced to the Black Panther as both a superhero and the leader of a nation that was technologically superior to the U.S. due to its wealth of vibranium, the fictional metal that is used to construct both Black Panther's suit and Captain America's shield. These are all important factors to the Black Panther's backstory that have remained consistent to this day, even as the Black Panther storylines, over the decades, became more American-focused.
"T'Challa — the Black Panther and mythical ruler of Wakanda — has always struck as the product of the Black nationalist dream, a walking revocation of white supremacist myth," Ta-Nehisi Coates, the Atlantic journalist and author who helmed the 2015 Black Panther comic, wrote at the time.
The first Black superhero
The Black Panther was originally drawn with a cape and open cowl, similar to Batman, which also showed his skin colour. However, Kirby ultimately redesigned his costume, darkening his suit and introducing a full face mask, a look that has remained more or less consistent throughout the character's history. You can see both versions of the cover below.
Even though it was apparent to readers that the character was Black — the Black Panther removes his mask within the pages of his first appearance in Fantastic Four — it wasn't until 1968 that you would see the colour of T'Challa's skin on the cover of a comic book: when the Black Panther appeared in issue No. 52 of The Avengers in a cowl (a partial mask that showed his jaw). This was important because the Black Panther was, in fact, the first Black superhero to appear in a mainstream comic book, predating other mainstream Black heroes, such as the Falcon (1969), Luke Cage (1972) and John Stewart as the Green Lantern (1971). The cowl was short lived, however, and the Black Panther soon returned to his more traditional full-coverage costume.
The Black Leopard
Over time, Marvel got weary about being so closely associated by name with the Black Panther Party, so they changed their superhero's name. It didn't go over well.
Beginning in Fantastic Four No. 119 (February 1972), the Black Panther briefly tried using the name Black Leopard, explaining it with an awkward bit of dialogue within that same issue. While commenting on the name's "political connotations" in the U.S., T'Challa is careful to say, "I neither condemn nor condone those who have taken up the name — but T'Challa is a law unto himself." It's a speech that sounds like it was taken straight from a Marvel press release, written with such hair-splitting caution as to not offend either side while still distancing the character from the political group.
Tumblr media
Readers were not fans of the change, and the renaming didn't last long. Neither "the readers nor the creators cared for the new name," Lee told Alter Ego magazine in 2011.
And while Marvel shied away from the politicization of the Black Panther name, many of the superhero's more popular storylines were in fact very political. In the same issue where the Black Leopard name is introduced, T'Challa travels to the fictional country of Rudyarda, a thinly veiled stand in for apartheid-era South Africa. Even the country's name is based on famous British colonial writer Rudyard Kipling, author of, among other things, "the White Man's Burden." In one of the final scenes from this issue, the Thing even smashes through segregated doors before leaving the country in a heavy-handed metaphor for the politics of the day. The Black Panther name may have been too political for Marvel, but the issues of the day certainly weren't.
'Wakandans stop being refugees from a Tarzan movie'
Fast forward one year to 1973, and the Black Panther officially stars in his own run of solo books as part of the uncomfortably named Jungle Action series.
The Black Panther's run in Jungle Action ran from September 1973 to November 1976 and was critically acclaimed, even pioneering a format that's the norm today: a self-contained, multi-issue story, a.k.a. the graphic novel. Called Panther's Rage and penned by Don McGregor, it was conceived as a complete novel told over 13 issues and introduced the antagonist Killmonger, a key character played by Michael B. Jordan in the film.
McGregor was encouraged by Marvel to include more white characters, so in January 1976, he did just that — though perhaps not in the way his editors had in mind — by facing the Black Panther off against the Ku Klux Klan. Captain America may have famously punched Adolph Hitler, but he never drop kicked a member of the Klan in the face quite like the Black Panther (see image at top)
Over 20-odd years, McGregor would introduce other extended Panther storylines (Panther's Prey; Panther's Quest) that helped develop the backstory of Wakanda and T'Challa's character in much more depth. Readers learned more about T'Challa's strength as a leader of an advanced nation, and how he deals with the constant threat from both imperialist and interior forces.
"These stories are where Wakandans stop being refugees from a Tarzan movie," writer Evan Narcisse so aptly points out.
The Black Panther becomes cool, with some help from Chandler Bing
Following an unsuccessful solo run penned by Kirby, sales and interest in the Black Panther character waned during the '80s. Storylines became more cliché, adding very little to make the character stand out from other Marvel superheroes. Then, in the '90s, Christopher Priest took up the mantle and reinvigorated the character completely.
"[Priest] had the classic run on Black Panther, period, and that's gonna be true for a long time," Coates told New York magazine for a profile on Priest titled, "The Man who Made Black Panther Cool."
As such, Priest's run also introduced some fairly major changes to T'Challa's costume, with gold accents around his neck, wrists and waist, plus the return of his cape, giving the character his most regal look yet. Priest, more than anyone before him, focused on T'Challa as a king, so the superhero was going to look the part.
Tumblr media
It's important to note that Priest was the first Black editor/writer to be hired by either of the big two comic brands, Marvel and DC. After some ups and downs, including leaving Marvel for DC, Priest was offered Black Panther in 1998. This was the beginning of a trend that saw many prominent Black artists take the lead on the Black Panther.
"I was a little horrified when the words 'Black' and 'Panther' came out of Joe's mouth," Priest later wrote. "I mean, Black Panther? Who reads Black Panther?"
Needless to say, Black Panther's history did not inspire Priest — "His supporting cast was a bunch of soul brothers in diapers with bones through their noses," Priest wrote — but he was eventually convinced to take the job, provided one detail: he wanted to create a white protagonist. In Priest's own words: "go to the wells of snarkdom, for the snarkiest snark I was capable of. Social politics as interpreted by Richard Belzer, Dennis Leary or Dennis Miller."
Inspired by an episode of Friends (yes, that Friends), Priest created a character based on Chandler Bing. Everett K. Ross was a paranoid, incompetent government employee tasked as a diplomatic escort for T'Challa, who was portrayed as a superlative statesman by day and merciless vigilante by night. The Black Panther series morphed into a mix of political thriller, satire and traditional superhero story, told through the sarcastic point of view of Ross, with an emphasis on T'Challa's cunning wit, strength and sense of justice.
"This was how the book achieved its small cult following," Priest writes.
To Priest, T'Challa wasn't simply a superhero, and the Black Panther was more than just a superhero title.
"People had not put as much thought into who and what Black Panther was before Christopher started writing the book," Coates says in that same New York magazine interview. "He thought that Black Panther was a king."
The formula worked, and Priest's run lasted for 62 issues, becoming the defining interpretation of the character.
Introducing women warriors
In line with his expansion of the Wakandan universe, Priest also introduced another major cast of characters to the Black Panther universe — the Dora Milaje, T'Challa's fierce and all-female personal bodyguards. They are some of the deadliest women in the Marvel universe, but in Priest's initial run, they were also depicted as ceremonial "wives in training," an idea that has not aged well.
Based on Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell, the Dora Milaje were, at least in the early days, often depicted as femme fatales in short skirts and high heels. Thankfully the movie jettisons that aspect of the Dora Milaje background, focusing instead on the women's efficiency as warriors and, even more so, as key characters to the development of the story.
Tumblr media
"I think the presentation of women is both fierce and very much feminine," Danai Gurira, who plays the head of the Dora Milaje, Okoye, in the film, tellsq. "I loved the way the women were shown being people that reach their fullest potential and live in it with a fearlessness and don't lose any part of being women. The myth is that's what happens, or women have to disguise their strength and I love that this is a world where that is just not the case."
In the 2000s, Reginald Hudlin, a writer, director and producer (his breakout film was 1990's House Party with rappers Kid 'n Play), focused on Black Panther's "street cred," drawing inspiration from Batman, Spike Lee and P Diddy. One key development from Hudlin was the creation of Shuri, T'Challa's younger sister and a tech genius who is played by Letitia Wright in the film. In the comics, she even replaces T'Challa for a time as the Black Panther and ruler of Wakanda.
This era emphasized, above all, the power and agency of the women in the Panther universe, a theme expanded on even more in the books to follow and film. Hudlin's run was also used as the basis for an excellent animated series, which ran on BET.
The extended Black Panther universe
When Coates picked up the mantle in 2016, he expanded on what Priest and Hudlin had built, but also subverted readers' expectations of the character to that point. In an interview, Coates describes fans needing T'Challa to be like Denzel Washington— "He's supposed to be smooth and effortlessly do x, y, and z." — but for Coates, it was also important to show T'Challa as flawed. "You got Denzel ... [but in] that movie where he's a drunken pilot."
Coates also focused the action back on Wakanda, questioning the very systems that held the otherwise utopian country together. Under Coates, women were made more and more crucial to the overall story, focusing more on their actual lives rather than how their characters relate to T'Challa.
Coates even ventured to develop the Panther universe in more depth with a spin-off, World of Wakanda, written with Roxane Gay (author of Bad Feminist, Hunger) and Yona Harvey, the first two Black women to write a series for Marvel. One storyline focused on the romance between Ayo and Anneka, two women who are also the driving forces to a Dora Milaje-led resistance that results in a civil war.
World of Wakanda, however, was cancelled after six issues. Even with a best-selling author and National Book Award winner, perhaps even that was too much for the traditional comic book-buying public. The series was cancelled due to poor sales, with Marvel Studios' vice president even commenting at one point that "people didn't want any more diversity."
Although with 2018's Black Panther already breaking box-office records, this theory has been proven wrong. For a character that was, at its core, created in order to the reflect the times and to combat discrimination, it's a fitting next chapter for the Black Panther.

Spider-Man 3
X-Men (?)
Ant-Man 3 (?)
Staremo a vedere…
