Chapter Five

The tiny amount of sanity Miles still had within Jackal disappeared, locked away in the back of Jackal’s brain until he was strong enough to come back. Miles looked forward once more, taking in the view of the abandoned Stark Tower, set them in his sights. Everything he needed was in there and he wasn’t going to take ‘no’ for an answer.

With a superhuman leap, Jackal raced from rooftop to rooftop, working his way toward the beacon that poked up through the New York skyline, arriving only in seconds. He landed along the top floor, glancing around cautiously. It was clearly being abandoned; tarps and plastic covers on almost every surface, and there was the fact that Tony Stark had famously announced that decommissioning of Stark Tower.

Clearly that was a man who didn’t mind people—even the wrong people—following his every move considering how often he bragged about himself. Didn’t they always warn people be careful what they put out there? It was a wonder Tony hadn’t been robbed blind by that point.

Jackal walked over to one of the blown-out windows and looked down over the city. His eyes narrowed as he watched the busy little ants of New York look continue about their day. When they could be struck down as easily as he did Rachel. But where was the fun in that? When they least expected it?

It was better to see the terror up close and personal.

And that’s why he was waiting for Spider-Man to show up.

Oh anon. Thank you for this. I’m gonna answer for Tavra because I got another request for Onica! Also this definitely has spoilers for the books.

Why I like them

There are SO many reasons why I like Tavra. She’s just incredibly cool. In the books and the show she has this easy confidence about her, and even under extreme stress and adversity keeps a level head. So much of who she is can be defined by her convictions and the people/causes she cares about. She is a loving sister, concerned for the wellbeing of her family. She a princess willing to sacrifice and fight to protect all gelfling and Thra. She is a paladin, protective and brave, dedicated to doing what is right. She is a lover, a friend, and ally, who helps those around her feel surer in themselves just by being there.

Tavra is a character who provides a steadying energy to those in her life. She helps Brea see beyond her youth and naivety, reassures and comforts Seladon, and offers both an open heart and an open mind to all she meets.

Though she can at times be gruff or stoic, she is a deeply caring person. She also has a mischievous and reckless side that is enormously endearing.

In short, Tavra is a wonderfully constructed and multifaceted character driven by an easy confidence in herself and her abilities, a steely and sharp mind, and an extraordinarily compassionate heart.

Why I don’t

 I really don’t like how much she is treated as a secondary character or used simply to move the plot around. By that I mean a significant portion of Tavra’s role in the books and the show revolves around other characters. She’s used pretty frequently only to give insight into someone else’s emotional state, as a tool in their character development, or to keep the plot moving forward. You see this in her relationship with Seladon, her relationship with Brea, her relationship with almost all the book characters, and even in how her independent plot lines are handled.

She’s pretty much only ever around when someone needs something from her, whether that’s emotional support, guidance, a skilled fighter, to be possessed so they can borrow her fighting skills, or when you need someone to became a spider puppet or be an easily kidnapped spider to add tension and drive the story forward.

Though Tavra is the type to keep her business private and put herself in situations that are high risk, it’s honestly ridiculous how often she’s used as plot device instead of treated as her own character. I’d even argue that this way of handling her is totally unnecessary in most cases could be done better.

When she’s one of the three characters to have a defining presence in all four books (along with Naia and Kylan) and is still never promoted to a more prominent position in the story - when one of those four books is spent with her under another entity’s control - when a significant amount of her screen time is when she’s part of the ascendency - when even her own death is more about how it’s affecting her sisters and their relationship than it is her - you start to see what I mean.

On a little lighter note, I also think that in the books she sometimes gets portrayed as serious to a fault. I prefer the easy going, casually joking Tavra we get in the show.

Favorite episode (scene if movie)

I really love that scene where she finds Brea after she’s run away fro the Order of Lesser Service. It really highlights the best of her character. She’s comforting, caring, open-minded, a little funny, a little tough, and unafraid to contradict her mother when she feels it’s right. I love how she trusts Brea from the beginning and provides her with a non-judgmental audience. It’s just such a sweet moment in time.

I liked the scene with Seladon for the same reason. And seeing Tavra get frustrated with her and reassure her all in the same breath offered great insight into their relationship.

I also really loved her in Shadow of the Dark Crystal. She’s such a fucking badass in that book. Tides was great too because we get to see her interact with Onica.

Favorite line

I’m the fun one.

Also not a line but I really loved the beginning of Tides when she has this kind of breathless anxiety about getting to Onica and the absolute and utter relief she feels when they get there.

Favorite outfit

I like her in her armor, no helmet, no circlet.

I’d throw her circlet away if I could. She just doesn’t pull it off.

OTP

Tavronica. I live and die for them.

Brotp

I loved her friendships with the characters in the books, Naia, Kylan, and Amri.

I also think she and Seladon, if they aren’t already, will become great friends as they mature (assuming Tavra’s still alive).

Head Canon

I have so many…I guess for this I’ll say that when Tavra was younger she made Brea looked well-behaved. She got away with a lot of it because she’s middle child, but she was definitely pretty wild. Joining the paladins helped her get that raucous energy under control and instill her with a sense of discipline.

However, even though she’s calmer and more behaved on the surface she still gets up to plenty of antics.

Unpopular opinion

I don’t know that this is unpopular per se but I do think she and Seladon are close. I actually think they are closer than Brea and Tavra.

Based on looks and personality, I would guess Seladon and Tavra are closer in age than Brea and Tavra. Because of that, I imagine they spent a lot of time together during their childhood, as friends, sisters, classmates, etc. Even when Brea came along, she seems like the type to have been independent from a young age. I think for the most part she would probably have been content to do her own thing while occasionally joining in with her older sisters.

Seladon though, she’s definitely a person who’s stronger and better off with people around to support her. She needs close relationships. We get small moments in the show of Tavra being there for her, acting as her confidant and friend. It’s a quick glimpse evidencing the strength in their relationship. But they are also both adults. They have their own lives and responsibilities - stressful, time consuming responsibilities. This is especially true for Seladon. So they don’t have as much time to maintain their relationship as they each might like. It’s also hard at times for Tavra who feels that while she’s there for Seladon, Seladon’s not always there for her.

As for the few disparaging comments Tavra makes about her in the books…

I think that Seladon, trying once again to emulate her mother instead of figuring out her own leadership style, strived to be more independent and self sufficient in her duties. And this in combination with finding out about Tavra’s relationship with Onica (if only very vaguely) led her to put distance between them and push Tavra away. As a result there’s some bitterness and a lack of shared understanding between them. Though we don’t get to see it resolved in the books, I have hope that the show will do justice to their friendship.

A wish

Yeah I wish for Tavra to be alive and not a spider please.

An oh-god-please-dont-ever-happen

Well they killed her, so…

But if I had to say pick a different answer, I guess I would say something else that very nearly happened. When Tavra was under the ascendency’s control and almost had her own sisters drained, if they’d actually gone through with that I would have been devastated. And if they released Tavra so she had to confront the fact that she killed her sisters…

I just really don’t ever want her to watch the people she loves die helplessly from the sidelines, or even worse manipulated into causing them harm.

Warning: Posted under a read more and marked because spoilers for Far From Home. There ARE spoilers in all of this ficlet as it’s heavily influenced by a scene int he movie. You’ve been warned.

“It’s clear to me that you were not ready for this.”

Peter went up to the roof. That’s where he always went when he needed some time to vent. Not even to vent, venting wasn’t his thing until he was at the end of his rope of emotions. Unable to keep himself from letting everything he kept pent up from exploding. He went to the highest point of the city, the roof of where he just was so that he could put things into perspective.

But what was the perspective telling him now? That Fury was right? That he really wasn’t ready? Wasn’t ready to take on…take on what? Take on the name he could never live up to? Wasn’t ready to be Tony Stark? Wasn’t ready to be the next Iron Man?

Wasn’t ready for anything, really.

“I thought I’d find you up here.” Peter’s eyes shifted to the side, looking at Brady once he finished phasing through the roof and planted himself next to him. Brady stretched out, resting his back against the chimney just behind him, watching the side of Peter’s face. Brady crossed his arms and added, “My mom does the same thing.”

“She likes to brood by herself after being told by one of the scariest men in history everything she already thinks about herself?”

Brady gave a wry smile. “No. When she wants some time to think, she likes to go to the highest point of the city and watch everyone down below.” He motioned with his hand, gesturing to the city of Prague. “It’s a bit different than New York, even different than Central City, but I guess it still works.” He lowered his hand to his lap, “All that other stuff, it never gets easy to hear the things about yourself you already think. Try being a teen mom.”

Peter shook his head. He faced front once more, eyes shifting over Prague. Brady was right, it wasn’t New York, but it was something. Anything that’d give him the chance to stop thinking about what he didn’t want to think about. About what Fury just had to bring up.

Brady took in a quick breath and added, “Anyway, Fury asked me to come up here to see how you were doing. He wanted to apologize for how he snapped at you.”

For a moment, Peter perked up. Hope swelled into his chest. He looked to his friend and, tentatively, asked, “Really?”

Brady lifted an eyebrow. “Dude, we’ve been friends for how long? Do you not get my sarcasm at this point?” He paused when Peter’s shoulders slumped, the force of his weight shifting forward practically knocked him off the roof he hardly had to use any of his strength to hold onto. “How are you feeling?”

Peter shrugged. Silence stretched between them for a long time. It wasn’t something weird between them. They could sit in silence as easily as they could talk a mile a minute about the newest video game that came out, or whatever city event they were going to. It came with the territory of going out into the field together, sometimes something as little as a look would convey an entire plan of attack against whomever they were trying to stop.

This time, however, Peter couldn’t handle the silence any more than he could handle the emotions slowly building up within him. A small volcanic eruption just waiting to go off. He sighed heavily, muscles twitching, waiting for him to bust out any and all ballet moves that would leave him dripping sweat, working to catch his breath, and too exhausted to even think of what was bothering him anymore.

The words slipped out before he could stop them. “I didn’t think I was going to have to save the world this summer,” he finally blurted. “I know it was a possibility, and I know this makes me sound like a jerk, but I had a plan with MJ and…” he spread his hands. “Now it’s all ruined.”

“And?” Brady asked. Peter glanced at him, was startled to find how seriously Brady was looking at him. “You’re not a jerk for wanting that, Pete. What we do is hard, we see things we do things, we make choices. People look up to us and then…” his eyes darkened and shifted aside. As if there was something too painful to talk about. “Even if you win a battle, sometimes they die. You’re my friend, dude, you really do have to think about what you signed up for…” he shrugged. “But at least you got a choice.”

“What do you mean?” Peter asked. He watched his friend closely, feeling something between them shift. “You had a choice.”

“No. I had a legacy.”

A legacy? What did that mean? A legacy was something to look forward to. Living up to a name that was bestowed upon someone. To something so great that was almost like you couldn’t deny it or else…you failed everyone. Let everyone down. Peter rubbed his hands together, palms sweating. So he does get it, Peter thought. The burden it took to carry it all on his shoulders, a name he’d never expected to be placed on him.

To The Next Tony Stark.

But it was Brady’s nervous fidgeting that caught his attention. He’d never seen his friend that nervous, then again. They didn’t always talk about things like this. Being that vulnerable with each other. Almost as if, with their partnership, they kept having to be strong for each other. Now they had no choice, not when there was so much at stake.

“Look, dude. My mom got her powers when she was eight. And she worked hard to make sure she was able to balance her life as being normal and to help people with her powers. It was hard, keeping it a secret from everyone. But she never kept it a secret from me.” Peter’s eyebrows rose in surprise. “Since I was born, she didn’t hide her powers from me. I don’t know, maybe it made us closer.”

Peter swallowed hard, nodded once. He understood the thought. He remembered how badly he’d wanted to keep his identity away from Aunt May because of…because of everything. Because of what happened with Uncle Ben, because of what happened with his parents, because he didn’t know how she’d react if anything happened to him. And yet, the relief he felt over her finally knowing his identity was so strong he nearly fell to his knees after all the screaming back and forth from Aunt May’s initial discovery. He had no idea how she’d react if he’d told her the truth in the first place.

Especially knowing Tony was involved.

And Peter had seen how close Brady and his mother, Cadence were. They were more like best friends than mother and son. Just as he felt with Aunt May…though there were still some things he kept her an arm’s length away from.

“But she worked hard to make sure everyone who didn’t have the means to protect themselves had someone to advocate for. Then she met my step-dad, Barry. Barry had a rough life, his mother was murdered, his father was framed for her murder and spent years in prison, and yet Barry still worked throughout his life to clear his name before doing the same. Then he became a meta like her, became the fastest man alive who practically lives off of justice and helping those that don’t have a voice. I got my powers the same age my mom did, when I was eight.”

Peter blinked in surprise. He couldn’t even imagine what it would be like if he had his powers when he was that young. When…when his parents were still alive. Peter closed his eyes, swallowing hard at the hazy memory of his parents. When was the last time I thought of them? Peter asked. He could hardly remember the last time he was to even think of his Uncle without immediately squashing it.

“It was cool at first. ” Brady shifted, crossing his legs the other way, scratched at his neck. “I just wanted to have cool powers, I didn’t think of anything else. But then I had the weight of…the weight of everything on my shoulders. The responsibility. I couldn’t go a day without some sort of anti-meta measures coming up in my school, kids were consistently being pulled out when it was found they were potentially metas, curfews were established, and it became scarier to go to school. But I still wanted to help my friends the way my mom helped other people. So, I tried to make sure they knew safe places to go, being kids that were metas it wasn’t something easily kept a secret. Because all the adults were making decisions for us.

“And I kept that up, along with going out into the field more. Seeing more and more of the fights against other metas my mom and Barry went through.” Brady gestured toward Peter. “Of course, it was nothing like “The Snap” or becoming a war criminal like Captain America. But facing the end of the world just about every year for the past eight years doesn’t help much.” He took in a breath so deep his chest swelled. “I can’t live up to the things they’ve done…but if I don’t try, it’d all be for nothing. All the training, all the expectations and work that’s been put on me since my powers were revealed themselves. I didn’t have a future in anything but being a superhero.” He sat up and poked Peter on the shoulder. “I’ve had that on me since I was a kid, probably since I was born, but you’ve had a choice, Pete. You’ve had a choice since you first got your powers and Tony Stark came to you to start his ‘internship’. You have the choice to be the ‘next tony stark’. I didn’t. I was always destined for this.”

Peter briefly closed his eyes, leaning and rubbing his hands over his face. “But we’re always putting everyone in danger.”

“Us being alive is what puts them in danger,” Brady pointed out, voice turning as dry as the air around them. Peter chuckled to himself. If Brady was making a joke about it, he was already starting to feel more like himself already. “By this point I’m surprised I haven’t keeled over from the stress of it all. It make make things easier for them.”

Peter let out a snort-laugh. “How can you always be sarcastic like this?”

“To mask the trauma I’ve gone through.” Brady said it so quickly, with such a lighthearted air that Peter wasn’t sure if he was kidding or not. “All that therapy does wonders.”

“It’s nice to have someone to talk to about this, you know?” Peter finally said. He looked to Brady. “You never really mentioned any of this before.”

“I don’t like to talk about it,” Brady admitted. “I mean, thinking that I saw my mom die in front of me, twice, kind of ruins the mood, y’know? It makes me a hit at parties.” Then he turned serious once more. “They think they don’t put pressure on me but…it really sucks, dude.” Brady rubbed the back of his neck. “Having powers is cool, the responsibility of what I have to live up to definitely isn’t. Fury might think you’re not ready but…honestly, I think you’re more ready than anyone else I’ve met.”

Peter smiled. He didn’t quite believe it but…at least the volcanic eruption had quelled down to a simmer. “Thanks, man.”

“Any time,” Brady said. He let out a quick sigh, relieved to change the subject once more. Silence stretched between them once more. So long that Peter almost jumped—almost—when Brady finally spoke up to add, “And besides, if we survive this you’ve got all summer to kill Brad.”

Peter laughed.

favorite thing about them: i agree with all the good things that have been said about martin blackwood in this tag recently, but my own favorite part, i think, is his choices. He seems to be a scared, oblivious, naive doormat but as the seasons go you realize how self-aware he is and how deliberate he is about insisting to keep things going, to be brave, to stay by Jon’s side, to take risks, to confront things or to not confront, to trust, to hope… So, it’s probably his willpower, probably?… the gay part is my second favorite thing.

least favorite thing about them: ……….. i probably wouldn’t like him in real life if he were my coworker and i hate that;;;;;;;

favorite line: oh there are soooooo many, and I’m in love with the entirety of MAG22, 39, 117 and 118, but it’s probably (“Why are you here, martin?”) “Well, well, Prentiss is out there and you can’t run so—”. THE FACT THAT THIS IS HIS INSTANT REPLY. I already adored this boy but this is where I knew he really was a cinnamon roll, too pure for this world.… that one “I’m sorry” and continuation from MAG40 is very high up that list too though, as you know. And all the “Please.”s :))))

brOTP: spider george MELANIE&BASIRA (I WISH) AND TIM (I WISH)… dark canon give us the times he went over to tim’s house and was Forbidden to mention jon and they just had a good time

OTP: /jon, /happiness, /only good things happening to him from now on

nOTP: any woman, he strictly gay in my heart

random headcanon: he’s a shockingly skilled liar. he might panic and be unable to keep it up when confronted about it, he gets stressed when he thinks too much about it, but he’s very good at weaving detailed but simple, believable lies and keeping them up long-term and never getting mixed up in them, never getting details wrong… and it’s an ingrained reflex that comes to him naturally by now. He’ll lie about random things about his childhood to make it sound like the typical childhood of a happy kid, and go to ridiculous lengths to keep it up, even though no one would care enough to check. He has three made-up friends from college that he sometimes “goes out for drinks with”, and he does go, so he can say “oh they’re late” if he runs into someone there. He once recounted a warm childhood story about his mother teaching him how to make a Polish meal, and when he went home he learned the recipe.

unpopular opinion: my reading of 118 is that he knew that, he expected that, hurt like fuck but he was fully prepared and a part of him still completely in control and calculating and estimating time the entire time. Like, he needed a minute to get back up, but yeah, that went as planned. He’s taken by surprise by the mention of Jon because that seemed way too insignificant and obvious to him to be an option.

favorite thing about them: yeah it’s definitely the voice huh

least favorite thing about them: he… has fucked up. i mean it’s hilarious, but also takes some of the terror away. well it’s also terrifying to know sometimes he does things even he agrees he’d better not have done;;;;;

favorite line: shockingly, MAG92′s “[PLEASURED EXHALATION]”. though “Yes, I’m calling to report a crime in progress.” is still hysterical too and there have obviously been some also amazing lines from him since then.

brOTP: …………..peter? sortof.

OTP: ->jon, but like, for a given definition of the term

nOTP: i’m tempted to say melanie and yet. i’d be interested. but kldfjkdslfjsdf i’m still mostly “LEAVE HER ALONE” in canon.

random headcanon: uhhhhhh. right, i’ll say this one here i guess: he has a glass eye which makes everyone wonder at first (like Shadow about Wednesday in American Gods) which is glass and which is the real one. This accidentally makes his “I only have two eyes, after all” an even worse “haha third eye” joke.

unpopular opinion: EVEN IF HE’S NOT 65+ HE DOESN’T LOOK THAT YOUNG!!! MAKE HIM OBVIOUSLY MIDDLE-AGED OR MORE AND DISTURBINGLY ENTICING

song i associate with them: they’re both just elias->jon and. 1) i promised i looked for something else but… i really have to say take me to church. 2) to make up for that have The Royal We by the Silversun Pickups (tho that’s mostly jon pov)

favorite picture of them: this one by @centaurianthropology, still not QUITE my headcanon elias but the closest i’ve seen yet, and also, super rad

favorite thing about them: RUTHLESS, she’s such an unexpected and SO refreshing female character.

least favorite thing about them: uhhhh that she’s dead i suppose

favorite line: “[…] I feel almost… bad, but there’s ten years yet before I can afford a conscience.” not the question but i also really love the line “and Gertrude’s eyes turned cold.” and its delivery.

brOTP: leitner and adelard dekker sound like it? also the statement-giver from Crusader, i didn’t care much about the content but that episode was such a delight to listen to, I love old people…

OTP: Mary Keay

nOTP: idk. nah. nop. bring on all the terrible gertrude ships

random headcanon: jude perry was kinda mad she didn’t get to kill her herself and burned down a few buildings to celebrate/make up for it.

unpopular opinion: the pretending to be gerry’s mother was 100% a joke on mary (and gertrude/mary) and completely unrelated to Gerard himself, she didn’t feel much for him. … knowing this fandom that’s not even unpopular.

song i associate with them: uhhhhh i had to look for this one but oOOOHHH yes: Bones by MS MR. also Mr. Zebra by Tori Amos is her (+ mary) driving elias insane (and for bonus fitting points i originally knew it from a best-of album titled “Tales Of A Librarian”)
