One Year Anniversary (Of Becoming A Fandom Writer!)
Today was my upload day for Black, Soft, Unearthly. . .the first fic I ever wrote and the passion that brought me into this fandom!
I remember spending weeks reading and rereading the chapters Magnus turns Lestat, pondering Magnus inner voice and history, outlining my work to include each detail and unspoken truth, to the depths of its beauty and emotion, because they're as extreme as it gets.
And it all started with that iconic quote, as simple and profound as it gets, "I kissed his eyelids. I gathered his soft black hair in my hands."
So, in celebration, here is my painting of Lestat and Magnus, in that moment. . .
Tumblr media Tumblr media
. . .as well as the opening lines from my fic, in the words of the mad alchemist (and lost poet) himself:
-🌕🌹
I am ancient. I understand the future is unattainable. It's not reached. Think of it I can, I will. I have a millennium of meaningless moments, to fly, to drink, to with the morning be closed like the petals of the night bloom, by unseen forces. But reach a moment like this? No.
It reaches me.

How'd It Turn Out?
I finished the Crab Nebula with surprising results. It was easier than expected to turn different color filters into something that fits well as one. I used four color filters—clear, blue, red, and green color filters.
I changed each layer mode to screen. In the end, I duplicated each color filter, making a total of 11 layers that include the Visible layer, the Clear median Blur, and the High Pass filter!
Median blur is used to calculate the neighboring pixels' median, affecting the image's edges and corners. The median blur involves a radius, a neighborhood, and percentiles. I set the radius at 3 to increase the blur while setting the percentile and alpha percentile at 50 to make the tone of the image a balanced brightness while becoming more blurred. Alpha percentile works to achieve this balance by becoming more transparent.
The high pass filter "filters high essential details, and larger scale gradients are removed" (Gimp). Standard deviation, contrast, and clipping are adjusted. Increasing the standard deviation allows more details to be accounted for.
I was happy with this final image because I could clearly see the interaction of each color filter in the final product. A lot of the previous noise had been minimized to the extent that the image's primary focus was highlighted.
My favorite part about the results is the Crab Nebula appearing behind the stars rather than in front. I see the stars popping out at me, but the focus still lies in the colorful nebula.
I would prefer my image to be less grainy, even though it is suitable for a first try.

Weeds of Boise: Boise State University Campus, part two
In part one of this two part series, I introduced you to the Boise State University campus, located in the heart of Boise, Idaho. I’ve been spending the past year walking the campus and cataloging the weeds that I find there. Boise has a fairly mild climate compared to the rest of Idaho, so weeds are generally easy to find just about any time of year. What weeds are present depends on what time…

Why you should join the BSU at FIT
The BSU which stands for “The Black Student Union” is a student ran club at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I have had the pleasure of being a member of the club for the past three years I spent at FIT. I worked my way up from being a regular member to the director of media for the club. I also also one of the two executive producers for “The Black Print” fashion show this past April 2022. Below are three reasons why you, a BIPOC student, should join and actively participate in the club:
1. Networking opportunities:
You never know what kind of opportunities will present itself when you meet new people and find out what their interest are/ what they do.
- Joining BSU is a great way to network and meet new people.
-  Keeping in contact through social media is a great way to keep that connection going (share your Instagram and LinkedIn)
2. Sense of belonging:
Going to a PWI can often be intimidating for those such as myself who came from predominantly black institutes where it was easier to get out of your shell and feel some sense of belonging. That is not to generalize PWI’s, because everyone’s academic journey is different.
- Joining a club with like minded individuals can take the pressure off being a small fish in a big pond.
- Helps boost your confidence and self-esteem
- Develop new friendships that can last a lifetime
3. Opportunities for growth
College is a great time to learn about yourself, what your likes and dislikes are, hobbies etc. What better way to explore your interest than to get involved in a club?
- BSU is a great way to tap into your creativity and see your visions come to life with those around you.
- For example, “The Black Print” fashion show started out as an idea and blossomed into a full blown production in just eight months.
- The entire show was student ran with the help of the Student Activity Board, and we all used our talents and ideas to make our vision come true.
- Build your resume with skills you gained from BSU
- Leadership roles in the club will look great on your resume
That is all! Those are my three key reasons as to why you should join BSU. With the semester now coming to an end, there is still a chance for those who aren’t graduating yet to join next semester, Fall 2022!

Не совсем понятно, причем тут сайлент хилл, но в целом задумка была неплохой. А так это обычная бродилка (собакокопалка) с хорошей графикой и небольшими элементами хоррора.

Bridgewater State University Observitory
Tumblr media
Earlier this week Jamie Kern, observatory manager and professor,  was kind enough to show her honors astrophotography class the University's observatory (shown above).
The Observatory was first built slightly off the colleges campus back in the 1970s, but was rebuilt in 2011 in Bridgewater State University’s math and science center. It contains a 14-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes cost roughly $4000-$6000.
What makes a Schmidt-Cassegrains telescope (SCT) so special? This telescope has become one of the most popular telescopes due to its versatility, compactness and portability. Its versatility allows users to take amazing photography, observing as well as stargazing significantly easier.
How does a Schmidt-Cassegrains telescope (SCT) work? “Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes are a catadioptric design, meaning they use both lenses and mirrors. They are reflecting telescopes, but they use a corrector lens to eradicate any abnormalities that would result from the mirror alone. The incoming light passes through the Schmidt corrector lens (also called a corrector plate) at the front of telescope.” Which is reflected from a concave primary mirror at the back of the scope. This focuses the light to the front of the telescope where it is reflected again by a smaller secondary mirror. Finally, the light travels back through a hole in the primary mirror to the rear of the scope for visual observing or a camera for photographing.
Source: Starizona
What is the history of the Schmidt-Cassegrains telescope (SCT)? Well for those reading who have good old American nationalism will be happy to know that it was invented by James Gilbert Baker, an american astronomer and lens designer. The design was first intended for a camera in the 1940s. However, Bakers' design wouldn't be used as a telescope until World War II for research for the military.

Strikes for Change
By: Jacob Chauvin
Ethnic Studies as we know, can be a sensitive topic to discuss with some, but gives us the cold hard truth about how our country started with diversity, and how we deal with diversity today. Diversity today, is what separates the U.S., from neighboring countries with its unique views, religious practices, and ethnic cultural values. But what did it take to get us to where we are today? Did it take bills? Laws? Amendments? Treaties? All of those are true, but it came down to each ethnic group’s cohesion and strikes to get each distinguishable movement sparked and ignited. The history of ethnic strikes is so important that we understand because it is within these strikes that made everything possible today, for the ethnic groups that battled poverty, discrimination, and social injustices based solely on their appearance and background.
San Francisco State College Strike
It was November 6, 1968, and few would know that this would mark the first day of the longest student strike in American history. Student leaders that attended San Francisco State College Third World Liberation Front marched with their demands for an education more relevant and accessible to their communities (African American, Asian American, Chicano, Latino, and Native American). This was a five-month long battle that engaged all parties involved in the school, police, and even politicians. Stemming from the original basic rights, protestors moved on to demand power and self-determination. The State resisted of course, but that didn’t stop the activists and they held strong. Though this movement didn’t change any economic or political structure, they strongly affected popular ideology and social relations. They also resulted in the formation of mass organizations and produced a cadre of activists who would continue to pursue their ideals.

Delano Grape Strike
Not all strikes though, however, were at institutions for education. Strikes were also formed for the ways of Filipino workers and Mexican American workers to get better working conditions in California. One is the Delano Grape Strike, which would change the course for immigrant workers who had to work in intense conditions just so grape farmers can meet the demands of the world.  On September 19, 1965, at 430 am in Delano California, 200 Filipinos and Mexicans stood below the NFWA (National Farm Workers Association) offices, holding signs inscribed with one word; “Huelga” (Strike). This strike lasted 5 long years, being disregarded by the Delano Chamber of Commoners. It was 1970 when that fight for the civil rights with Delano agricultural working communities was won. NFWA became a union, changing the name to United Farm Workers.

Standing Rock and Alcatraz Strike
Another distinguishing strike was involving the Native Americans at Standing Rock, and Alcatraz. In April of 2016, the Standing Rock Sioux established the Sacred Stone protest camp at the confluence of the Cannonball and Missouri rivers in North Dakota. Companies began pipeline construction, and as a result, the Sioux began a protest because the pipeline’s draft environmental assessment did not address risks to their reservation’s water supply. Alcatraz is seen as a Historic Landmark and works with individuals and organizations to preserve and interpret its long history of activism.

Conclusion...
Strikes are history, strikes are what bring cohesion and unity amongst the unique ethnic groups involved. It is a way for their voices to be heard in this ever-loud country we live in. Strikes are necessary because if a group does not strike, then how can we be heard?
