#but not seeing Marcy and Sasha’s parents isn’t one of them

So, you find it weird we legit never see Sasha or Marcy's parents on Amphibia in the show's entire run despite being teased twice?
Honestly? Not really.
I mean I def would’ve loved to have seen them and how they reacted to everything their daughters have gone through, but Sasha and Marcy’s parents don’t matter to the overall narrative.
The show was never about Sasha and Marcy’s journey’s in their entirety. They’re side characters to Anne’s story.
For as much as they contributed and grew on their own, Anne is still the central character and the Plantars are the other main main characters. I know that’s probably not what a lot of people want to hear or agree with but that’s just the truth.
Could we have still seen Sasha and Marcy’s parents anyway? Absolutely.
Did we really need to for the show to tell its story? No.

How would you give a brief summary of how Amphibia, intentionally or not, exhibits Marxist themes?
could you expand on the marxist allegory in amphibia?? from what I could tell it was your bog standard (no pun intended) "fight the power" cartoon plot. the most marxist adjacent thing I remember is that one hop pop gag, I'm interested to see what I missed
no offense guys, but im kind of amazed that anyone could miss such an unsubtle, crucial theme of the show??? and i really don’t think it’s unintentional. this is the same guy who wrote the episode of gravity falls (“the golf war”) about the exploitation of labor, that included one of the best lines in the show: “but isn’t that cheating?” “pacifica’s rich, mabel, she’s cheating at life.”
the world of amphibia presents us with three distinct classes: the rural workers who are the backbone of society (frogs), the police/military (toads) whose job it is to exploit the workers for the elites (newts) and crack down on any unionization efforts / solidarity movements among them, and the walled-off urban bourgeoisie in newtopia who benefit from the exploitation of the working class and their colonial enterprises. again, this really isn’t subtle!
as the daughter of thai immigrants who own a small business and rely on the support of their local community, anne is able to bridge the diasporic gap between herself and her parents through her experience as a total outsider in wartwood who ultimately builds a strong connection with her community and learns to take pride in her work of making and providing food. conversely, marcy’s role in newtopia parallels her experience as the daughter of upper middle class multiple generation taiwanese americans, thinking that she has fully established herself in this welcoming metropolis due to her hard work and intelligence, only realizing that she is simply another exploited pawn of the ruling class’s imperialist mission once it is too late.
back home, sasha used her whiteness to protect her best friend(s) from racism, as well as knowing exactly how to weaponize her pretty blonde girl privilege to get away with petty crimes such as vandalism and shoplifting, and (misguidedly, imo) assumes that her presence will automatically protect anne from getting in trouble as well. as a toad, sasha learns through her friendships across classes (anne and marcy are frogs and newts, respectively) that solidarity movements beyond the arbitrary class divisions designed to keep them in line while the monarchy profits are the only way to truly resist imperial conquest, that shutting down working class revolutions for the benefit of those imperialists is merely the illusion of having power. her first attempt at overthrowing the monarchy fails because she simply wants to replace the monarch instead of dismantling the system, but it is her resistance movement in which she allies herself with frogs, toads, and newts that she is finally successful in her mission.
yes, hop pop yells “eat the rich!” while dropping a guillotine, but it is his role as a farmer and the pride he takes in his work, his unfailing honesty and humility as a local businessman, the work ethic he instills in his grandchildren, the way he isn’t afraid to stand up against their greedy and exploitative toad mayor, and the way his resistance makes him the face of a revolution so existentially threatening to the toad order that they feel the need to execute him that makes him a marxist icon.
hop pop serves as a contrast to grime, a positive role model who demonstrates the value of honest work (even if anne never particularly takes to farming, she does clearly find value in making food for people, especially as a way for her to share her culture with others). grime on the other hand is a terrible role model for sasha, as he relishes in the privilege he does have through his exploitation of others instead of questioning his role in society and the ways in which he is exploited for the benefit of the empire. sasha is the one who teaches him about the importance of solidarity movements, while he encourages the kind of selfishness, greed, and violence that toads are taught to value.
when marcy meets hop pop, she already has an understanding that farmers are the backbone of society, the relational importance of the natural world, and the significance of community-building and worker solidarity in running a functional society, but she is also duped into overemphasizing her role as a single individual, which becomes her downfall. while she genuinely wants to do good for a world that has helped her, welcomed her, and shown her kindness, she has been taught to place too much faith in her own intellectual capabilities, and it is her mind that becomes exploited– and is used to exploit– for the purposes of the empire. marcy would never want to exploit the working class, colonize and destroy other worlds for their resources, destroy the environment, or use violence to keep people in line, but darcy, who uses her mind and body like a puppet, makes sure she has no say in the matter.
while andrias is the current ruler of amphibia (and mind you, his reign has lasted 1000 years), the core is the final boss to defeat because andrias is merely the figurehead of the empire, while the core represents Empire itself. (again, it’s literally called The Core! it’s not subtle!!!) while many people took issue with the seemingly simplistic way the final fight between the core and the trio went down, you have to remember that it’s ultimately a metaphor about the power of class solidarity against an imperialist legacy that would rather preserve its hollow illusion of greatness than actually serve the people who live there. the core can’t believe that anne would sacrifice the stones, the tool/weapon that allowed them to colonize other worlds in the first place, which they call “amphibia’s greatest treasure,” but anne reminds them (and us) that amphibia’s greatest treasure is not its capacity for power, but the people, the communities that have come together to support her and one another.
amphibia is a show that is fundamentally about change. ultimately, its intersecting discussions of class, race, imperialism, and resistance come to a head in the finale when the importance of embracing change is underscored not only in the personal growth and development of each character, but also in the way its characters (specifically anne) are unafraid to give up everything they know and love for the sake of revolution. make of that what you will.

ST. JAMES MIDDLE SCHOOL--AFTERNOON.
Lily is at her locker, grabbing her things in preparation for going home at the end of the school day. Her friend Priscilla is leaning on the locker next to her, scrolling through her phone.
Priscilla: "Better hurry up if you wanna catch the bus, Lils."
Lily (smirking as she zips up her backpack): "No need. One of my moms is coming to pick me up and told me to wait here until she arrived. Although, it IS about 5 minutes past when she said she'd be here..."
She looks down at her phone, scrolling through her messages while turning herself towards Priscilla. Suddenly, a commotion ensues near the school entrance, and loud music starts being played. Lily looks up to see many students in that area freeze in confusion and skepticism, as well as...
Lily: "Oh no."
Priscilla: "What?"
Lily (sighing, dropping her head): "You'll see..."
Leaning past Lily, Priscilla catches sight of what Lily saw: Sasha, resplendent in black leather jacket, aviator shades, medium-length dress, and flowing blonde locks, is making her way down the hallway towards them in an exaggerated slow-motion swagger, nodding her head and shooting the occasional finger gun at several of the staring students. Behind her, Marcy is holding up a large boombox, blaring out Queen's "Cool Cat" for the entire school to hear. At length, the two of them reach Lily's locker just as the song fades out. Sasha leans against the other locker next to Lily with one hand. Priscilla is doing her best to stifle a giggle.
Sasha: "Hey, Lilly! Ready to head home with your SUPER-cool moms?"
Lily (hand over her eyes with her forehead scrunched up): "...why are you the way that you are?"
Sasharcy get an earful from Anne when she comes home and Lily tells her what her (Anne’s) wives did to embarrass her (Anne’s) “beloved oldest daughter”.
After the aquarium field trip incident, Anne tries to make sure Lily’s rep isn’t damaged by either of the Trio however she does know understand her parents when they did embarrassing stuff in front of her classmates

Fics and AUs Masterpost
Hey there folks, this is where you can find stuff in the Stash. Not everything I’ve posted will be here, just works that are larger, that I’m fond of, or at least I think aged rather well.
Sorted by fandom (original fiction stuff will get its own post once more is ready), and then series. Multichapters will have a wordcount.
Mostly a mix of A Hat In Time, Amphibia, Promare, Brave Animated (Netflix), Fire Emblem, and other fandoms I’ve not done more than one fic for.
A Hat in Time
Beingverse (AU Tag) -WC: 97,671 -Status: Complete -Masterpost. Divided into main fics of the series, meta/worldbuilding posts, and fanart/fanfic of the series made by others. Take a look at it! -Summary: When Snatcher stealing Hat Kid’s soul goes sideways, they’re stuck in her body, while her unmoored soul rampages as it possesses Snatcher’s own vessel. They need to set things right- if they can work together, that is. They grow closer in their adventures- including realizing that there is something far stranger to Snatcher than existing as a mere ghost. -Lots of worldbuilding, found family of the brotherly Snatcher variety, and the more you learn of the titular Beings, including one of our main characters, the more you see why the AU is named for them. -Note: Beings are an original species, and while they bear a significant role in this au, they are meant for original fiction/novel format that’s currently in-progress. Please bear this in mind when it comes to creative credit.
The Thirteenth Crusade (AU Tag) -WC: 94,315 -Status: Complete -Summary: Classic low-fantasy AU. Mu wishes to destroy the Mafia occupying her home island and terrorizing the townfolk, and will go so far as to ally with a dragon- one of mankind’s enemies from the Crusaders’ War seven centuries past- whose soul is trapped in a book in order to do so. Snatcher, for his part, just wants his body back, so he can find a child that was long lost to him during the war. -Art from: rindomness, abstractbabble, lemonadesoda, ruthlesslistener
Dwelling of the Ancient Gods: -Status: Oneshot, complete. -Summary: The Twilight Bell is a trap, and it’s alive. Hat Kid meets a part of it. Kind of a precursor/test phase to Beingverse concepts, you’ll find the first explanations of Beings here.
Fear and Fable, All The Time That Passes: -Status: Oneshots, complete. -Summary: A pair of oneshots for @/doodledrawsthings “coffee shop” au. First up is Luka’s late night forest stroll that ends with some hikers getting the scare of their lives- if not from him. Second is the trio finally having a successful ‘date night’ now that they know their friend isn’t exactly human.
Love Language: -Status: Oneshot, complete. -Summary: For @/lemonadesoda’s Hide and Seek verse! The translation software goes on the fritz for a bit, so Hat Kid and her adopted parents bond by learning each others’ native tongues.
Duality: -Status: Oneshot, complete -Summary: A noncanon crossover of Beingverse and @/toxic-lavender’s au. Snatcher and Hat Kid get lost. Super lost.
Amphibia
Theophagy: -WC: 21,235 -Status: Complete -Summary: Marcy kills the Core while it’s still in her head. There are... consequences. Some good, some bad, some unknowable and strange. -Art from: curseoftheduck
Quantum Crucible: -Status: Oneshot, complete. -Summary: The Shadowfish beneath the palace attempt to talk to Marcy, and their warnings are misunderstood- but not forgotten.
Automata Theory (AU Tag) -WC: Who knows at this point lol -Status: In progress -Summary: During the Core’s upload into a new host, something goes drastically wrong for it, and Marcy escapes. Just... not in the way one would think.
Down Below (AU Tag) -WC: 36k -Status: Complete, currently posting -Summary: Down in the tunnels underneath Newtopia, hunted by the Night, Sasha has a bad time. Psychological horror au diverging from True Colors, with inspiration from the pre-s3 speculation about The Night. Co-parenting this au with @midnightcrossroads- go check him out! -Art from: curseoftheduck, marcyminmin (link 1, link 2), calamitykiller
Catachresis -WC: 30k -Status: Complete -Summary: Three human children vanish from a park in Los Angeles, and there is no trace or written runaway note to be found. Three warm-blooded monsters appear in Amphibia, and nobody can understand what they're saying. Language barrier au -Art from: Vryfmi (character sheets, basement union, comic), brushbanditarts
Deed Forborne -WC: 23k -Status: Complete -Summary: The invasion forces depart for Earth before the resistance can reach them, leaving them stranded on Amphibia and their enemies out of reach. Weeks later, Marcy Wu opens her eyes to see her home planet for the first time in months. AU focused Marcy on Earth and the Boonchuy parents. -Art from: curseoftheduck
Scenic Route -WC: 18k -Status: Complete -Summary: Sasha and Grime manage to rescue Marcy and use the Calamity Box as an escape route... But it doesn’t exactly have GPS, so they end up dropped in the middle of Bumfuck Nowhere, TX. Sasharcy-focused, canon-divergent.
Promare
Day One Dark: -WC: 50,876 -Status: Complete -Summary: Hundred Years AU- The Great World Blaze occurred a century ago, rather than thirty years ago. Before a Freeze Force Detention breakout, the mole died, so the escape is untrackable. Send the Scourge, Send the Swarm: -Status: Twoshot, complete -Summary: Lio breaks out of Fennel a few hours too late, and Parnassus is already in the air.
Fall like Fire: -WC: 5,879 -Status: Complete -Summary: Thyma lives fic. That’s all you need to know.
Fire Emblem
Witness the Death of Winter: -Status: Oneshot, complete -Summary: It's the nature of people to help those in need, and to seek help when they need it. Dimitri, after escaping from Fhirdiad, only does so once.
The Fortress that Walks: -Status: Oneshot, complete. -Summary: Outsider POV of the March to Deliverance. Mycen gets yelled at and it’s very satisfying.
In Loco Parentis: -Status: Twoshot, complete -Summary: Trying to wrench the outrealms into some semblance of logic in order to show parts of Shigure growing up.
Brave Animated Series (Netflix)
Death and Taxes: -WC: 14700 -Status: Complete -Summary: In the immediate aftermath of Morewant’s crowning, there are many adjustments to be made. And that’s not even considering the growing army on the demons’ doorstep.
Principle of Least Time: -WC: > 20,000 -Status: In progress -Summary: After a slip-up with Desire Queen’s cave crystals, Dragon Brave and Chief Brave end up in a vision of the fateful night where Morewant began his reign. However, this vision is quite strange in other ways...
Others/One-offs
Where the Sword Was Covered and Dust Had Grown: -WC: 19,751 -Status: Complete -Summary: Long ago, two kings killed one another for the throne. At the Pokemon League, thousands of years and a lifetime later, two kings faced each other for a throne. Pokemon BW Gameverse. Doodliest Catch: -WC: 2,577 -Status: Oneshot, complete -Summary: Dungeons and Daddies, a coda to season 2 episode 39 written after it came out. So, your new friend managed to manifest themself into a form that isn’t big enough to swallow planets, even if just looking at their shifting reflections of your most deeply-buried anxieties is enough to give you a bit of a migraine. Now what?
Divine Right: -WC: 7,442 -Status: Complete -Summary: Guardians of Ga’hoole, Hagsfiend!Coryn AU. Nyra pokes her beak too far into nachtmagen, and her chick hatches... rather haggish.

The plantars: when being likable isn’t enough
Okay, so I see a couple of post about how the plantars are ignored by the fandom and that they, not Sasha and Marcy, are the true main characters. This is not me trying to negate anyone else’s beliefs, I’m just stating my viewpoint.
The truth, the reason the plantars are ignored in favor of the trio(and I apologize for being blunt here) are not interesting characters.
I mean, they don’t really change all that much over the course of the series. Sprig repeatedly gets into trouble and suffers no consequences from it, nor does he learn any lessons. The extent of hop pops growth is he learns to like new things. Polly is the only one to grow In a substantial way, by taking care of frobo, but for some reason the show decided to stop focusing her after friend or frobo, receiving only one focus episode in season 3.
What’s more, even when they do show signs of deeper characterization, it only comes up when it’s relevant to the plot. I mean, when it was shown that Sasha’s parents are divorced, it explained so much about why she is the way she is. Meanwhile, hop pops backstory gets explained…and then dosen’t become relevant again until all in.
Even worse, they also get a ton of focus episodes. The problem is that these episodes neither progress the plot nor further their characters arcs in a meaningful way, but instead to go on wacky misadventures. Even Anne, the main character, felt like she was playing second banana to them.
Looking back, I bemoan the fact that so much time could have been better spent on more interesting characters, not just the trio but other amphibians. In season 1, we could have gotten a lot more episodes dedicated to Anne bonding with all the wartwoodians, ultimately leading to them respecting her. But instead, we had sprig violating ms croakers privacy and hop pop trying to brainwash his grandkids.
Now I don’t think the plantars are bad characters by any means, I think theyre likable and fun enough. But likability alone isn’t enough to justify the amount of focus they had.
I think the problem is that the executives wanted them to be mascots for amphibia, and thus didn’t want them to stray to far from their initial personalities. It could also be because the writers are attached to them do to them being the season one main cast, and thus gives them preferable treatment despite not doing much with them.
It just…sucks, because they’re are signs that the plantars are deeper than they appear. But the show is afraid to meaningfully expand their characters in the long run.

Day 2 - Favorite Character
Amphibia has a plethora of great Characters, with the Calamity Trio and Andrias being as well developed characters as Avatar ever had(Which is impressive. Most western animated shows since then, tend to only have one or two truly outstanding characters, while Amphibia has 4, and unlike nearly everyone else, it has no bad characters). So the question is then, which i find most compelling and interesting?
Tumblr media
The answer in my case is the human mess that is Sasha Waybright.
I have always had a soft spot for characters who deeply cares about the people around them, but are absolutely terrible at showing it, always messing up because of their own flaws as people, and Sasha might be the single best example of that archetype i've ever seen.
Sasha, like any great protagonist, is someone who defines the idea of "The Human Heart At Conflict With Itself", with her two defining traits: her deep, burning, passionate love for the people she cares about, and her deep fear of not being in control constantly warring inside of her.
Tumblr media
Sasha is someone who has an amazing ability to make people love her, and one thing i absolutely love, is that her assessment in "Prison Break" that if you get someone to love you, they'll do ANYTHING for you, goes both ways.
Tumblr media
Because if Sasha loves you, she will die for you. No questions asked.
Which is juxtaposed with her greatest flaw. Because for all that Sasha's powerfull love for other people being one of her defining traits, her greatest flaw is her fears.
Like Marcy, Sasha's greatest fear is being alone, but while Marcy's fear is rooted in her personal inability to make new friends, and the sense that Anne and Sasha are the only people who will ever accept her, Sasha's fears is rooted in her fear of not only being alone, but that she deserves to be alone.
Sasha is willing to go incredible lengths for the people she loves, but at the same time, she NEEDS to feel validation from them.
Tumblr media
Sasha's deep rooted control issues are rooted in 2 overall big personal flaws, both originating in the split up of her parents, and the disintegration of her relationships with both of them.
Sasha is so dependant on the people she actually loves and care validating her efforts, that the moment it seems to her they reject her, she feels like they're attacking her personally.
That she wasn't good enough, that they can get by without her, and thus she is unimportant to their lives. Just like she feels she was ultimately unimportant to her parents.
Tumblr media
"Not while Anne and Marcy are getting by without me!"
Sasha is terrified of the past repeating itself. Of the people she loves moving on, and leaving her behind. That she deserves to be left behind, and that she is not worthy of being loved.
Tumblr media
And so she overcompensates. She demands people always listen to her, never giving an inch of compromise. And so she always ends up gripping what she has so tight that it breaks, again, and again.
She just wants what is best for everyone! Why can't they see that!?
But love is about more than just wanting what is best for everyone. It requires compromise, talking things out, and above all, respecting the wishes of the people you love even if they don't always line up with yours.
Despite all her good intentions, she always ends up hurting the people she loves, because if she isn't in control, then things might go "Wrong". They might repeat themselves, and she might become alone again.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And so it all comes crashing down eventually, when Sasha finally overstep herself one time too many, in a cruel, calculated manner and Anne, the person she loves more than anyone else, has finally had enough.
And she tells her in no uncertain terms that Yes, you are a horrible person. You are awful. You don't deserve my love.
This is the moment Sasha's entire journey has been building up.
She is at the top of the world! Having finally achieved the level of control that only a monarch has. And then, Anne crushes her completely and utterly.
In one short conversation, Anne brings Sasha to complete Rock Bottom as all her worst and deepest fears come true all at once. And worst of all, she knows Anne is right. This IS her own fault.
It takes the rest of the day and night to sink in, but she knows.
Tumblr media
The thing about hitting rock bottom though, is that when you hit it, you have nowhere to go but up.
Sasha's entire journey up until "True Colors" is her internal conflict between her love for others, and her desire for Control.
And in the end, she came to the conclusion that control, the means to feeling safe, was meaningless, and redundant. Sasha always had Anne's love, her endgoal. She didn't need to prove herself worthy of it. And by tring to control everything, she in the end, only became someone who was unworthy of Anne's love.
And so she resolves herself to be better. She makes the choice to change. To take the step into becoming worthy once more of the love and adoration that Anne had for her.
Sasha's journey is my second favorite of Amphibia as a whole, and i love her internal conflict with herself, and the way it always blows up in her face as she makes mistake after mistake, until finally, she reaches a turning point where she has lost everything, and resolves herself to be better.
My favorite aspect, is her relationship with Anne and all it's many, many aspects for good or ill.
And as such, she is my favorite character.

Owl house AU I guess?
A while ago I had a dream where all of my favorite characters from books, tv shows and movies went to Hexside. And I did also, so I got to meet them all. And I decided to draw some characters as if they were in the The Owl House world and went to Hexside. So anyways here’s Ladybug, Chat noir, Marcy, Anne and Sasha all in The Owl House world (in my mind). A little more about my ideas for this and a coven color code so you can figure out what covens I put them in under the cut. Also btw the Plagg and Tikki drawings are not mine. I can’t draw kwamis XD so if anyone does know the artist can someone please tell me so I can credit them. Thank you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ideas
Plagg and Tikki are Ladybug and Chat noir’s talismans
one of the birds on Sasha’s sword is her talisman. Or it’s one bird and it can color change
Chat noir is some unknown half cat demon being??? I don’t know how to describe it XD
The Calamity trio has their calamity powers but no one really knows how they have them. In my mind maybe they have something to do with the gem pins on their uniforms?
I can’t decide if Ladybug and Chat noir still have their Miraculouses and I don’t know how they would use them in TOH world. If anyone has ideas I’d love to hear them!
In my dream I hung out with Marcy and Chat noir but I don’t really see them being friends. So I think Marcy would hangout with Luz. And I think Amity and Ladybug would hang out. If anyone else more friend ideas please share :)
Okay unrelated but in reality if anyone has any ideas about this AU idea please tell me. I would love to hear ideas
I would imagine Ladybug’s yo-yo would be her purse but it maybe could be weapon she uses to fight stuff sometimes. I don’t know lots of stuff goes on in Hexside. She might need it
Chat noir definitely asked Ladybug to Grom :3
Chat noir and Ladybug don’t actually go by Chat noir and Ladybug they do go by Adrien and Marinette but that’s just how I’m writing this I have no idea why though XD
Chat noir would still be a model (guess the teenagers of the boiling isles thought that half cat demon things were cute and weird)
Gabriel isn’t a half cat demon thing so no one really knows why Chat noir is
Gabriel is probably an ally of Belos
Ladybug’s family owns a magical bakery with interesting and magical treats
King saw Chat noir one day and now they’re besties XD
Marcy wants to know everything and anything about the boiling isles and magic. That’s why I think Luz and her would get along great
Sasha was probably in the friend group that had Boscha, Skara, Cat and Amelia
Chat noir acts more like more like Chat noir than Adrien
Anne’s parents own a restaurant and is probably good friends with Ladybug’s parents
Ladybug and Chat noir umbrella scene in boiling rain. They probably both got burned a little bit
Marcy likes to ask Luz about the human realm and finds it fascinating. Gus and Marcy share human realm ideas and Marcy is probably in the human realm club
If anyone would like more drawings or ideas/writing? of this AU or have specific Characters they want me to draw (They have to be appropriate though) I would take any requests :)

Note
You think it’s good writing for the traumatized abused child to be forced to move with her parents and leave her dreams behind because it’s “reality””???
sure, that’s one way to interpret the episode and what i said about it.
nothing takes away from the trauma and hurt that marcy faced both on earth and in amphibia. no one can deny that marcy was so hurt that she was willing to get herself and her friends trapped in another world for an indefinite amount of time when there was any risk that she’d lose them. sure, we could have a show about how this thirteen year-old marcy gets to spend eternity with her best friends and happy “forever.” but that’s not what this show is about. no, this show is about growth and change - anne’s whole narrative is about learning to do what’s right even when it’s hard, to be honest when lying would be so easy, and choosing to fight for what she really believes in. sasha’s arc is about choosing to change for the better - also being honest when it’s hard, but more importantly, putting your faith in the people you care about. wartwood’s whole motto was about being slow to accept and slow to change, and yet they rally together with newts and toads to fight together. marcy’s arc is all about learning to see what’s around her and accepting reality for what it is.
change in the environment causes change in the person. being zapped to amphibia together was a major change and we see how much its changed our trio, especially the first time they reunite. they’d spent so much time apart, trying to survive in this new world, and in their reunion they try to go back to their “normal,” but their “normal” was never healthy and sustainable - it was deeply problematic and not really good for them. and change in and of itself isn’t inherently good or bad - we see that especially between anne and sasha. growth in the self comes from a recognition in a challenge to negative aspects to our character. anne’s initial character was challenged - she couldn’t live with the plantars the same way she’d been living her life up until then. this challenge in her character allowed for her to change, and she had the support of her whole frog family to become better, to find out who she was, and to grow into the anne we know now. season 1 is literally all about her growth, about how she keeps messing up but she learns how to fix things and take responsibility. that’s the whole point of “frog of the year.”
sasha was enabled - she grew powerful and wicked strong - and she learned that her manipulation and controlling nature was a good thing. she didn’t grow for the better because this part of her character wasn’t challenged - in fact, the worst parts of her were encouraged. negative aspects of her character were first challenged in the s1 finale during her fight with anne, and she wears the scar of that memory, but instead of recognizing this as a flaw in who she is, she sees this as a flaw in her strength and preparation. if she was better, if she was stronger, then anne wouldn’t have fought back against her. she doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with who she is - “i like who i am,” she says during the family dinner. only after true colors do her negative traits really get challenged. after learning of her deceit, anne doesn’t trust her. andrias gets ahold of the box. she watches marcy get stabbed. they all get separated. this time, she realizes that it wasn’t her lack of strength or ability, but rather, her behavior that led to this catastrophe. anne telling her off and telling her that she’s a bad person really got her to recognize the negative parts of her character, and so finally, sasha chooses to change for the better - to grow - because she knows what needs to change.
marcy was also enabled - she was never asked to change. her silliness, her curiosity, her playfulness, her intelligence were parts of her that were encouraged and were taken advantage of by andrias. andrias encouraged her fantasy of adventure with her friends with his proposition. her toxic character flaw is the unwillingness to change and refusal to accept reality. marcy never faced the consequences of that until she was stabbed, put in a nightmare, and then possessed. she was so caught up in living this fantasy that she didn’t realize how it was hurting the people she cared about. in “all in” we see her fantasy - the core gives her everything she could ever want - and at first it works because the core erased the memories of the consequences of her actions. but she remembers, and yes, it upsets her, but she learns the price of her wanting to live in this fantasy and unwillingness to change. she took anne and sasha away from their lives and used them as her playthings - she didn’t consider their lives. we see the creepy versions of them in her fantasy world, like they’re just little puppets. and yeah, it’s understandable that she doesn’t want to move away from them, but just because she doesn’t want things to change doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t.
“the thought of losing you was so…big,” marcy tells them after she wake up next to them, “i was afraid that if we weren’t together, we wouldn’t be friends anymore.”
“things change. we can’t stop it. but nothing - nor distance, nor time - can break the bond we share. because nothing can take away the memories of the time we shared together,” anne responds.
and that’s the key. marcy’s able to return to consciousness because she learns to reject the fantasy that aldrich gave her. she finally accepts that change will happen - change already has happened, and staying the way she was has resulted in massive pain and destruction that she hadn’t intended. yeah, moving away sucks, especially with family that maybe didn’t treat her very well. but this all happened because she wanted to stay with her friends, because she was afraid that she’d lose them forever. but they’ve been apart for so long now, and they’re still with her, by her side. they’ve all changed, and life’s not going to stop throwing shit at them. they’re all going to keep changing, but they’re saying to each other that they’re going to be with each other through it all - somehow, someway.
what would staying now do? they’ll have to go their separate ways physically eventually - that’s how life is. what would they do after high school? college? when they get jobs? as much as they love each other, it would stifle their growth to keep their life as stagnant as possible. if anything, having this space and making them realize what they really mean to each other would help their friendship. they can’t take each other for granted when they don’t see each other all the time anymore. they’ll get to show up for each other and reach out when they need the other - because it’s not just a matter of convenience. sure, for some, distance makes them grow apart - it be like that sometimes - but especially with the growth that our characters have done, i’d like to think that the distance would let them really appreciate each other.

Is it me or was Anne’s ‘epiphany’ about how she and Sasha treated Marcy completely unearned and way too convenient; Our first mention of her thoughts on the betrayal in the same episode they encounter Darcy, when it should’ve been much earlier?
Because not at all throughout all of season 3 do we get any indication that Anne has reflected on Marcy’s betrayals; To the point where defenders of the season even theorized it was because she was repressing True Colors, but apparently not! We don’t get a single moment of Anne thinking about Marcy’s motives nor do we see her reflect on how she’s badly treated another friend, with whom she could transfer and apply that lesson towards Mar-Mar. Like the letters to Sasha and Marcy’s parents, it just feels out of nowhere and unearned.
Which also gets me into a gripe I’ll never get over; We should’ve gotten an episode with Sasha and Marcy’s parents. It would literally be the PERFECT way for Anne to address and reflect upon Marcy’s betrayal, and thus build up her forgiveness, by exploring Marcy’s home life and how that motivated her. Have Marcy’s parents break down as they admit they didn’t pay enough attention, or have Anne realize they still don’t with how they moved away. Make Anne understand why Marcy valued her friends so much because she didn’t have parents who cared (unlike Anne), make Anne then ponder if SHE treated Marcy right, if her parents didn’t! And Sasha’s reluctance towards forgiveness has the added context of her missing out on this important learning experience.
It’s not just a missed opportunity to me, it feels like a perfect necessity that the writers just opted not to include because... I dunno, I guess we need a Spider-Man reference for an entire episode that badly? Because Molly Jo must be established in that episode, because she’s totally that relevant and necessary to Escape to Amphibia, as if the FBI isn’t so incompetent the writers could’ve easily written a plan without her. Same applies for Hop Pop’s Hollywood shenanigans, because establishing Hubert Humphrey is DEFINITELY worth leaving out a Sasha and Marcy’s parents episode! Giving buildup and nuance to Anne’s forgiveness of those two, who needs that?!
Wow. Tell us how you really feel.
No but seriously I agree with you on just about everything you've said, especially Sasha and Marcy's parents not being touched upon once in season 3 except for the letters Anne wrote during the Christmas special. I'm just gonna come out and say it: having the parents move away (at least that's what's heavily implied) feels like a really lazy way of avoiding having to discuss Sasha and Marcy.
And since I'm on the topic, here's an issue I haven't really discussed: the Boonchuys not contacting Sasha and Marcy's families kind of makes them look like assholes. The girls have been missing for months, with their families living every parent's worst nightmare of not knowing if their daughters are dead or worse. And because they didn't contact them when Anne returned, the Boonchuys are basically just letting the Waybright's and Wu's continue to live that nightmare. Yes the explanation of the girls being sent to another world is pretty out there, but they have proof of that in the form of the Plantars. And we didn't even get so much as a throwaway line from Anne like "Hey, let's not tell Sasha and Marcy's parents I'm back until we can get their daughters home safely too." Just a simple line like that could have made a world of difference.
So yeah, not bothering to address Sasha and Marcy's families is just one of many issues with how the narrative in season 3 handled those two. Matt has been extremely tight-lipped about the girls' families because of "spoilers" but given that we're at the freaking finale and there's still no sign of them, I have my doubts that they can add anything meaningful to the story at this point.

Been seeing some criticism toward Sasha having conflicting feelings being mad at Marcy, since she got them stranded in Amphibia, calling it mean spirited or outright hypocritical. As for my two cents, I don’t see it that way, as this is supposed to be the point here for Sasha. It is dramatic irony after the crap she has done, but in all fairness too she never got the chance to really speak her mind whatsoever about Marcy’s betrayal, either. Sasha has been so focused on building the rebellion, trying to make herself a better person, fixing her friendship with Anne after everything that’s happened, and most importantly become more honest about intentions, surrounding why she wants to help them this time.
In True Colors Anne got the chance to voice her heartbroken disappointment toward Marcy’s actions, whereas Sasha was beyond angered at her and couldn’t find those proper words to describe it. That’s always been a key issue of Sasha she has struggled with, overall. Sasha has plenty of compassion in her, hence the rebellion to save Marcy from Andrias, but always had serious anger issues. It’s why things went down the way they did in True Colors’ run time. Sasha was impulsively going to maliciously tear Anne away from the Plantars as a personal, “Fuck you!”, to her at one point. Honestly, I loved the way they wrote this moment here with Waybright because it shows issues of her nature don’t go away with the flip of a switch. Sure, she wants to become someone anyone deserves to have for a friend now. However, it doesn’t change a simple fact, she’s been hurt by Marcy too and those scars of betrayal affected her, as well.
Tumblr media
I mean, Sasha was the first one to break away in frustration against Marcy’s desperate pleas to be understood after all. This action speaks loads of the weight Sasha carries from these revelations about Marcy, as a whole. Sasha obviously wants to save her dear friend, although now that she is reaching said final destination there’s another anxiety Waybright hasn’t spoken of, how it’ll affect their bond permanently afterwards. Sasha has been so laser focused on defeating Andrias and saving Marcy from the tyrant there hasn’t been any time for her to properly reflect on all these game changing perspectives. Anne has been able to have plenty of time, considering she was temporarily back on Earth. Granted, Anne was pushing herself to an unhealthy level in rushing to get themselves back to Amphibia, but my point is Boonchuy got moments of relaxation with her parents. Sasha never got many moments of mental peace, due to how severe conditions have become in Amphibia recently and it seriously shows.     Sasha has been fighting for her life, as well as Wartwood’s denizens, to stay alive long enough, until Anne returned to really kick things into high gear. These thoughts may have been lingering in her mind for awhile, but Sasha chose to ignore them. It wasn’t until they finally set their big plan into motion finally that these bottled up feelings resurfaced because it needs to be stated now. She wants to save Marcy, but restoring their connections to a healthy status quo? That’s a gigantic different matter Sasha has been too afraid to confront head on aloud. Can she be forgiving against Marcy ripping her away from a normal life, or learn to understand, much like Anne has, why her friend did this all stuff in the first place? Sasha may have changed, but old habits die super hard, as they say.
Tumblr media
It’s very true to life when you want to change for the better, where unfortunate other qualities can rear their head once again when circumstances become terrible. Sasha’s anger comes from an understandable place of hurting, which Anne doesn’t judge her for feeling this way. Just as Anne understands why Marcy got them sucked into Amphibia, she empathizes with Sasha’s plea to an extent. Anne isn’t going to demonize Sasha for feeling conflicted because Boonchuy knows forgiveness isn’t easy. Anne once again shows her best quality in understanding others’ perspectives, showing how far she has come from Season 1′s humble beginnings. Anne understands these concerns about the future because she felt that exact way about giving Sasha another chance. Anne’s best quality is her empathetic nature shining brightly here for Marcy & Sasha.
I love this scene so much because it captures how rough friendship can be. Anne isn’t focused anymore about the actions of what one does, but the why they commit them. Anne realizes Marcy was getting ignored by Sasha & herself staying passively silent in solitude and feared permanent separation, her own issues about the betrayal aside. Anne isn’t going to let her own anger blind her from seeing the bigger picture, as it once did in True Colors when Sasha tried to warn her, regarding Andrias’ real intentions about what he plans to do with the box. This scene is a prime example of Amphibia’s greatest strength, character growth.

Fuck Disney.
That’s it that’s the post.
Very much fuck disney.
They canceled The Owl House.
They hardly advertised Amphibia and did nothing to stop the True Colors leaks.
They wouldn’t allow Alex Hirsch to put queer characters in Gravity Falls until the last episode, and even then it was speculative.
They wouldn’t let Daron Nefcy give queer characters speaking lines in SVTFOE unless it was their last appearance, and even then they were side characters - one of them had like three words as lines.
And still, they put The Owl House in their pride section, they put Amphibia in their pride section, they put Gravity Falls and SVTFOE in their “pride” section because acknowledging our existence is “being an ally”. Yes, it really is being a good ally when you don’t even put a non-binary character’s proper pronouns in the subtitles. It really is being a good ally when you don’t even know the ship name of the most progressive queer ship in the history of disney. It really is being a good ally when you put three colors in a heart and proclaim that “representation”.
It isn’t.
Fuck disney. Put that in your tags. Fuck disney.

I live for the holy trio of creators:
Alex Hirsch - icon, once threatened to kill the Chipmunks in a film called Waterchip Down, created the legendary Bill, voices the horror Hooty.
Dana Terrace - utter icon, openly pirates her own show, gave us a queer kiss (multiple) in a disney show, wrote lines into her show having a go at Disney, made it canon that Amphibia and The Owl House are in the same universe
Matt Braly - icon, plays the “I grow tulips” icon Chuck, made it canon that Amphibia and The Owl House are in the same universe on a different occasion to Dana doing it, killed three teenage girls.

tbh i find it kind of weird when people act as if sasha was a “mean girl” or “bully” at school. it’s pretty clear that the reason she was popular was specifically because she knew how to make people like her by being nice and friendly to them and making them feel good about themselves. she and anne are (as usual) very similar in that regard, their social savvy stemming largely from their natural friendliness and ability to make people feel special and welcomed (the way anne made sasha feel that first day they met on the playground). it’s kind of funny that this is somehow framed as a sinister trait when sasha is able to befriend the toads guarding her, because remembering peoples names, interests, and being friendly with them is nothing but a good thing, even if you don’t genuinely care about them (and it’s clear she does care about the toads she’s befriended, just not as much as she cares about anne and marcy). the reason that sasha is higher on the social hierarchy than anne is because anne is a brown immigrant whereas sasha is a conventionally attractive white girl (she’s also more feminine than anne, and presumably wealthier, which also plays a not insignificant role). the only person we see her actually be mean to is that girl who was being racist to anne. she bullies bullies (or as she would call them, “evildoers”). amphibia understands that the most popular girl in school may be a blonde cheerleader, but she earned her social status through being friends with everyone, not through being a bitch to them.
the only person we actually see sasha be a bitch to is anne. and to be clear, it’s not because she sees anne as her minion or her inferior. it’s obvious that sasha loves marcy, but she can sometimes be kind of dismissive towards her, and i think it’s because she’s subconsciously resentful of the idea of anne not giving sasha her full attention. she wants anne all to herself, so as much as she loves marcy and gets along with anne’s parents, she also very much wants to establish herself as the most important person in anne’s life, even though marcy was anne’s best friend first, and anne’s parents genuinely love her (a fact which she can’t seem to wrap her head around. healthy parents??? sounds fake). it’s why sasha is so fucking mean to sprig, she feels like sprig somehow “stole” anne away from her. what makes sprig a good friend to anne is that he always wants what’s best for her, whereas sasha only wants what’s best for anne when sasha can provide that for her. sasha is a bad friend to anne, but it’s because anne is her favorite person, her lifeline, and she’s too insecure to trust that anne would still choose her if sasha wasn’t constantly asserting all the ways she can serve anne’s needs. sasha is terrified of the fact that she needs anne more than anne needs her, so she sees herself both as anne’s humble servant/knight in shining armor/prince (utena vibes) but externalizes this role as the person who knows what’s best for anne and thus has to make all the decisions in their friendship. this can seem counterintuitive, but ultimately it’s just her insecurity manifesting in controlling behavior because deep down she’s convinced that if she isn’t dictating the circumstances of her loved ones, they’ll leave her (she probably blames herself for her parents’ divorce too, and wants the semblance of control in her friendships because it's clear she craves that feeling of security she fundamentally lacks).
there are no clear cut “heroes” or “villains” in their relationship, simply two young girls with low self-worth. anne, sasha, and marcy all have to learn to be secure in and truly love themselves to grow as people. their insecurity and codependency made them stagnate in unhealthy ways, but learning that they have value outside of what they can provide for other people, even when they’re alone, is crucial to their collective development. anne and sasha both saw themselves as the inferior in their relationship, and it’s anne’s insistence that there doesn't need to be a leader and a follower, but that they’re equals, two individuals coming together instead of one single entity that must operate in perfect sync at all times, that is actually what allows them to ultimately be more in sync than they ever were before.

What’s Sasha’s little brother like?
Still unsure if I wanna keep this headcanon but here’s what I have so far:
At the time the Trio reconnect and shortly afterwards start dating, he’s 7-8.
He thinks Sasha is the best and coolest older sister. Granted the scars, tattoos, swords and armor helps but he’s still right. Sasha absolutely adores her little brother and mostly took care of him when he’d be staying with his dad in weekends.
He’s met Anne and Marcy and think they’re cool too but while he likes playing games and drawing with Marcy, he doesn’t like Anne’s frogs, especially her EarthFrog!Sprig (“gee, I wonder where he learned that from?” “Hey, don’t blame me. I never told him about Sprig”)
He hasn’t learned yet that his dad is a bad parent and so he still looks up to him. Sasha is waiting until he realizes the truth and will be there to help him work through the issues with their shitty dad.
He’s on the school soccer team but wants to be in drama so he can meet actors like the ones his dad works with.
Seeing Anne and Sasha spar one day when coming over, he thought they were fighting for real and went to try and defend his sister but hit himself in the face. Luckily they were using wooden swords at the time and so there wasn’t any major damage.
He understands the concept of his older sister dating and eventually marrying two girls. He however got into a fight once with older kids who thought it was weird, he lost but Sasha scared them off.
His best friend (besides the handmade toad plushie Sasha made when he was a baby) is a girl which Sasha found out is the step-daughter of Anne and Marcy’s old school bully.
His mom treats him well and he wants for nothing but isn’t spoiled. He can be a bit selfish like all little kids but is genuinely a good kid.
When he and Sasha fight, Anne can’t help but be reminded of Sprig and Polly
That’s about all atm. Again, Idk if imma keep this headcanon but at least if I have a few incorrect quotes that have or reference him then this might help explain it a bit.

The amphibia finale is amazing and actually works. Sasha, Anne, and Marcy were middle schoolers when this started. I actually laughed when Sasha said she and Anne drifted apart because it’s true! Friendships rarely pass the test of time. Our calamity trio were barely decent friends and the one thing high school and college do is expand your world. The ending is realistic. While it crushes my heart, I’m glad that the music box is gone. It’s rare for a tv show, much less a kid’s cartoon, to have such a definite stop. There is no going back. Anne is dead.
Now, just because the ending is great doesn’t mean it was earned. The pacing on this show is jank. I’ve complained about it at the end of season 3a but most of the plot relevant information was shoved in last minute. Sasha and Marcy never really interact and we don’t get to see their relationship. Marcy barely gets any development and what we did get lasted five seconds and came out of nowhere. One minute we see inside the core, the next Marcy realizes she was wrong to lie to her friends. Where did that come from? I get that Disney hates “serialized” shows but The Owl House sure would’ve loved to have a full season 3.
Andrius caving after Leif’s letter pushes believability. The “secret” spell was an absolute ass pull to kill Anne. There was time to establish what was seen in the finale. We never see Marcy and Sasha’s parents, we don’t know how they reacted to the letters Anne sent. The Boonchuys clearly never talked to them. There was so much that could’ve been done but instead we get tonal whiplash, two hop pop is sad that he isn’t famous episodes, and a midsommar homage.

Amphibia Week-Day 2-Favourite character
One of the strongest aspects of Amphibia are the characters and their relationships. This series goes beyond just exploring the main characters: Secondary characters have their own background, personalities and conflicts that complement the main character’s growth too. A good example of this is ¨Anne and Wally¨. The episode focus on Wally but it’s about Anne’s insecurities as well. If have to choose my favourite character, or well, characters, that would be the main girl trio (Anne, Sasha, Marcy). Yes, it’s a very common choice, not surprising considering a huge part of the show is about their complex friendship and the toxic elements that are present in it. I’m going to talk about each main girl, explaining briefly the reasons why i like them so much.
Anne Boonchuy
Tumblr media
Anne is main star of the show and the audience main P.O.V. of the story. Unlike other protagonists in animated shows, she starts as a selfish, self-centered, lazy, mean and irresponsible. Matt Braly talked a few times about how he wanted Anne to be written this way, thus creating a character that heavily dislikes being stuck in this fantasy dangerous world. While Anne is a bit more simplistic than Marcy and Sasha, she still someone easily to care about due to her character arc and growth over the course of the three seasons. The main of her arc is about self acceptance, forming her own identity and being more confortable with herself. It’s a conflict many can easily relate to, specially when you are used to have other push you around. I think another thing i like about her character is that she feels very down to earth. She isn’t positive about everything all the time. She also has this mischievous side to her, which makes her a funnier character.
Marcy Wu
Tumblr media
When it comes to Marcy, it’s not difficult to guess why people like her. She is funny, adorable and awesome in some ways. She is a very relatable character for me and many others in the fandom. One of the main reasons is because she shares traits that are common with neurodivergents such her passion for topics she likes, her wanting to learn about everything, her clumsiness, her escapism and her issues with connecting to other people. In many ways Marcy is a desconstruction of the fantasy isekai hero you usually see in videogames and anime series. She gets accepted quite easily in Newtopia, is given a special treatment by the king and she is considered a hero in the city. Marcy implies in occasions that for her this feels like being stuck in those videogames she likes so much to play. Her living in Newtopia is dream come true for her. All this is used to critize her extreme escapism that goes to the point of unintentionally doing harm to others like tricking her friends and making them get stuck in Amphibia for months, She later gets betrayed by her adult figure in this world, King Andrias, who turned out to had been manipulating her Marcy the entire time. This happens in ¨True Colors¨, episode in which she gets crushed by the reality that Amphibia isn’t like those videogames she used to play.
Sasha Waybright
Tumblr media
Sasha is an very interesting case of a character since while on the surface she reads as a mean girl, the series goes beyond that archetype and develops her in a way that makes her stand out from those other characters. Sasha’s main conflict is her affection for the other girls vs the need she has for being in control of every situation. Anne has expressed how Sasha has been pushing her around for years, sometimes making her do things she didn’t like. Much like Marcy, Sasha has abandonment issues and is afraid of losing the people she cares about just like it happened to her parents. What’s fascinating about her is that she doesn’t see herself entirely as a bad guy. She talked to Toadie that she pushes her friends around because she wants for is best for them, meaning that she believes she is helping them. Ultimately, her arc is about her realizing how she has been toxic towards Anne and Marcy all these years (especially Anne). And now she is trying to make up for this by being more compassionate, let other be themselves, and be firm only when she needs to.  ------ Aside from the main girls, i really like the Plantar family, the old trio (also called divorce trio by the fandom), Anne’s parents, Grime, Olivia and Yunnan plus some Wartwood secondary characters
