a new year's resolution
well, as of 2024 i’ve decided i will no longer be posting on tumblr... this shouldnt be the hugest surprise since ive been pretty critical of staff, the over-monetization of the website, the site culture, and the user experience for the past year and gradually reducing my time spent scrolling the ol’ dashboard- ive even mentioned my intent to eventually leave; well, that eventually is now! gradually ive found myself analyzing the effect that using tumblr for 7+ years has had on me, and the effects of social media in general.
ive never had to write a goodbye letter like this before. while ive joined and left several online platforms over the years, its always been a gradual fade in interest rather than a conscious decision to stop. never have i used a platform as long as ive used tumblr, over 1/3 of my life. ive grown up with tumblr, for better or worse. how do you write a goodbye for that? i guess ill have to try my best. because as important as tumblr was for me, ive recognized the way its hurt me too.
finding other avenues of online self-expression particularly has made me think a lot about this. when i edit my website i feel accomplished, happy, and content, feeling i have put something of myself out into the world, my seed to grow and garden to tend. when i scroll through tumblr i feel as if my brain is mostly idle, and when i do emotionally respond its often out of anger or annoyance, because anger = engagement and social media sites like tumblr WANT engagement. particularly because i have OCD ive found myself upset by certain aspects of tumblr discourse culture, as well- it is basically the Scrupulosity Website and much of the way i react to and interact with media has been colored by my years spent absorbing the viewpoints of said Scrupulosity Website! i even used to look up discourse topics on tumblr just to anger myself on purpose, which is a dangerous road to go down, to build up Enemies and Factions in your mind- this is how discourse culture works. the culture of tumblr teaches you to see the world in black and white, and to feel like youre always in danger of compromising your moral purity or being attacked by the morally impure. If You Don’t Reblog This You Are A Bad Person. even as someone who nowadays tries to stay away from discourse entirely, its still there in the back of my mind, because the way we interact on this website is colored by this. when im online i dont actually want to be angry all the time! in fact i like putting my effort towards more positive stuff. but additionally: tumblr made me unhappy but it also made me an addict
and yeah social media addiction sounds like a silly boomer thing to complain about but one thing i noticed when i started trying to curb my time spent on tumblr was that opening the site was damn near compulsive. we all know those “open tumblr, close tumblr, open tumblr again immediately after” memes but that did describe my behavior pretty accurately. the draw and allure of social media feeds is powerful, if i accidentally click the youtubes short tab ill find myself a half hour later scrolling through random shit i don't care about and asking well how the hell did i get here? i dont even like that stuff! tumblr is no different no matter how much the site tries to coast on the reputation of being the last social media that's a “remnant of the old web” and “has no algorithm”. i like my chronological dash but it is equally as addicting to scroll through the thousands of people ive followed over the years, as it is to scroll through the algorithmic feeds of youtube shorts, because that's just social media!
and kicking addiction is pretty damn hard. before 2023, i made two separate attempts at reducing my tumblr usage and both fell through within a week due to that addiction. for reference this current bought of thoughts about reducing my tumblr usage and making my online/irl balance more healthy, around the start of 2023 when i began working on my website and its taken me an entire year to wean myself off of the hellsite, bit by bit. theres a point where it stopped being a conscious act, and even as i was carefully whittling down how often i use tumblr with extensions like leechblock i still had that compulsion go off multiple times every day, its a really strange feeling. but now that ive found so many more ways to express myself online, i just feel more whole now... i guess what im saying is that when i post on tumblr my first instinct is to complain or wallow about something, when i post on my own handmade blog on my website i always want to talk about things that excite me or make me happy! and its been such a tangible change in the way i think and act and im certain its because of the way social media and tumblr have their own “societal expectations” and structure that is built to feed on this negativity loop.
and a lot of the biggest shifts happened when i began immersing myself in the ideals of the web revival, while creating my own website. finding things that genuinely interested me and niches i want to occupy made me so much happier. i know we make a lot of jokes about having mutuals we never talk to that mean the world to us and i do think that is indicative of something. like, when i post on a forum full of strangers i am engaging with more “face to face” (or the digital equivalent) communication than i do with years-long mutuals. how genuine are these connections, this dashboard, the enjoyment i got from that meme post ill forget in 10 minutes? (not to say that i don’t genuinely care abt my followers and mutuals. ykwim?) i can still get all the things i enjoy out of tumblr in a more curated form via rss feeds; ive been so much more proud of what i post and create and code on my website. what am i here for? i gradually realized that i am losing absolutely nothing when i “miss out” or block tumblr on my phone or what have you.
since starting working on my neocities site ive felt so much creative drive. ive created whole interactive essays and worlds and games and writings and so many things i could never host on social media. my website is a place of my very own, and ive been learning the value of focusing on what i put out into the net compared to what i take from it. its made me feel so much more fulfilled when i spend time online.
and let's not forget about staff. i have broader issues with how automattic in particular has gone about running the site. the ads only took up more and more of the dashboard, and every month it felt like there was some new paid feature doomed to never take off. all while the user experience gradually degraded. using the site without browser extensions to fix the ui and block the ads and tumblr live and all the other shit they threw all over the place makes it look like its ridden with viruses, and i think the fact that its become so normalized to feel like we have to stay in spaces that become increasingly hostile to us, even while the internet is so vast, is really strange (i mean, i also thought that way at first). but Anyway. so much time and effort was spent on features no one liked or wanted in some desperate attempt to get a little extra money, while staff members get in public fights with users who complain about getting monetization shoved down their throat. its so openly pathetic. the merch store had mostly mediocre designs and the digital tumblrmart is absolutely full of useless digital goods with free alternatives. considering this is a userbase that gladly donates to other sites donation drives for hosting costs (i.e. ao3, wikipedia, internet archive), i am shocked that staff never considered the obvious answer of a fucking donation drive once a year or so! the ceo telling people with concerns about the ads being unsafe for epilepsy to “just pay the ad free subscription” is one of the most disgusting things ive ever heard from someone officially representing such a platform. do not be fooled by the reputation tumblr has cultivated: all that it cares about is making money from you. tumblr is “in danger” because it can't turn a profit- because a profit is all they care about!
so why stay here when im happier elsewhere, apart from the addictive compulsion? that's what ive been thinking through for nearly a year, realizing that i have no reason to, and that weaning myself off of the addiction is in my best interest. i can create and blog and have fun online and connect with others and follow other peoples work all without the need for tumblr anymore! and i think id be all the healthier for it.
over the past year ive truly fallen in love with the internet again and ive loved putting myself out there, unrestrained in ways i havent felt since i was very young. but nonetheless ive learned a lot on tumblr, ive had some of the worst and best experiences of my online life, and i dont doubt that i would be a much different person if i had never been a tumblr user for as long as i was. but i had to break out of this shell eventually.
i keep going over this wondering how i can express every feeling in my head, how i can word everything just a little better, how i can make the perfect goodbye. but i think this will have to suffice.
you can still keep up with me online here:
-explore my website: i keep it consistently updated and im always adding new things and writing new posts on my blog! you can even speak to me directly on the site! if you sign my guestbook or use my chatbox ill try to respond :) if theres anything on this list you do id like it to be this one! i worked hard on it! you can even send me chat messages on my homepage! just keep in mind it may not display everything right on most mobile browsers, but it should be mostly navigable...
you can also subscribe to my rss feed. if you don't know what rss is, it allows you to use a feed reader to keep up with updates from sites all over the internet! my rss feed will notify you whenever ive made a new post on my blog or made an interesting edit on my site id like you to take a peek at :0 convenient, right?
you can also email me at [email protected] to message me directly. if you prefer im also “wygolvillage” on discord
thank you and happy new years :) thanks for seeing me off as i sail to a new sunrise <3

So obviously the entire Feanorian Host as a whole is a bit intense about the cause, but I feel like there’s different levels of devotion between their individual followers.
So my question to you is, from least to most intense, which Feanorions followers are the most cult-like and why?
the cultishness absolutely varies by region! i'm being a little facetious when i call them an out-and-out cult, but fëanorian minion culture certainly has... tendencies. the isolationism, the way loyalty to the group supersedes absolutely everything, what they do to those who 'betray the cause,' not to mention how absolutely psyched they get at the opportunity to do murder. still, the precise way that manifests, as well as how intense they are about, does change a lot depending on where you are in east beleriand. surprisingly it doesn't track that much with how tolerant of outsiders each subdivision is, which is most evidenced by:
the gap: maglor and his cronies are easily the most xenophobic part of the host, which is both a cause and a consequence of them having probably the least regular contact with non-fëanorians out of all the armies of east beleriand. paradoxically, this gives them very little incentive to go full cultist; much of the deliberately off-putting stuff the rest of the host does is partially to distinguish them from the outgroup, which isn't something you need to do when everyone you deal with is either part of the gang or an obvious enemy. they still do the elaborate facial deformations, they still have a bit of a Thing about fire, but the thing that's holding them together is much less utter devotion to the cause and much more the organic friendships and kinship bonds between riders
there's a few other reasons why the folk of the gap are relatively less culty. the gap is sparsely populated to begin with, and most of its population is at least semi-nomadic; it's a lot harder to cultivate that kind of obsession when everyone's off doing their own thing most of the time. while the gap doesn't have the highest headcount of mithrim sindar - as stated above, its population is tiny even by east beleriand's low standards - it has more mithrim sindar as a proportion of the population than anywhere else in east beleriand, and the culture of the gap has this big mithrim sindarin focus on community and clan to counteract the noldorin tendency to sacrifice everything for grand ideals. the general lack of new recruits from outside the host only serves to intensify all of this; the riders of the gap fight together because of the spiderweb of social and personal obligations that link them all together, not necessarily because of the cause (though that is still a factor, i want to be clear.) this fairly isolated society held together by individual and familial bonds stands in stark contrast to:
himlad: the thing about celegorm and curufin's people is that they're up against the fuzzy border between east and west beleriand, between maedhros' definitely-not-a-kingdom and the finarfinians' section of fingolfin's defensive line. as such, they're more or less constantly in contact with the outside world, coordinating troop movements, sharing information and resources, recruiting from the same sindarin populations. there's still a clear delineation between the fëanorians and the fingolfinians, partially because there's a lot of mountains between their major centres and partially because this lot actually do have an other to define themselves against and thus a reason to emphasise their own identity, but there's a lot of chatter and petty squabbling and philosophical discussion and a steady regular connection to the outside world counteracting the worst of the cultishness. unlike pretty much any other part of the host, the himlad minions never really lose the sense that they belong to a greater community of elves
which explains what they do in nargothrond. i don't believe that literally every single one of their followers abandoned celegorm and curufin, but i'd buy it was a lot of them, maybe even most of them. it helps that it's specifically the finarfinians their lords are betraying, the people they've - perhaps not fought side by side with, but who definitely always had their backs. even without that, though, the very existence of that relationship means they're used to working with people from outside the host, getting to know them, empathising with them, which is a pretty hefty counterbalance to the specific the-whole-world's-out-to-get-us undercurrent of internal propaganda. by no means was it an instant switch, or an easy one; after finrod got ousted there was a ton of interhost politicking and debate and the occasional brawl as everyone tried to figure out what to do. but the fact that the question was even open says a lot, i think. that probably wouldn't have been the case even in:
thargelion: caranthir’s domain is the most heavily populated part of east beleriand, and the settlement at lake helevorn is the closest thing it has to a city. a significant portion of that population aren’t fëanorians by even the loosest definition; they’re dwarven traders or miscellaneous humans or sindar far enough from the front line of the siege they can just keep on with their lives the way they always have. the fëanorians (and here, more than anywhere else, that’s a fuzzy category; this is the easiest part of the host to join, and the easiest to leave) are mixed in with all these groups, negotiating supplies, managing tribal levies, patrolling the roads, state stuff. out of all the subdivisions of the host, the thargelion minions are the hardest to distinguish from outsiders.
to keep their ingroup coherent, then, they actively mark themselves out. the minions in thargelion are probably the loudest about their collective identity and the cause and the joy of bathing in your enemies’ blood and all that. they have weird midnight rituals and purpose-built meeting halls and elaborate coded language, and while being overly tyrannical about it would be bad for business there’s definitely a sense that they form a tightly knit core which looks after its own above all else. that image is somewhat complicated by the aforementioned blurry edges of the thargelion host - is the sindarin bureaucrat who’s never touched a weapon in her life but plays a vital role in the military administration a fëanorian? is the noldorin freeholder who pays very little attention to the day-to-day minutia of the war but keeps his sword sharp for the hour it is needed? - but the alliance of old soldiers at its heart is a clear and palpable thing, especially when you can feel its eyes. when their hackles aren’t up the minions are perfectly happy to mingle socially with the other peoples of thargelion, though, which sets them apart from:
himring: on the frontlines of the siege of angband, with all the nightmares of the north pressing directly on their spirits, maedhros’ followers stoke the flames of their devotion high. the warriors of the cold fortress are less showy about their fervor than their counterparts in thargelion or even himlad, but the ardour underlying it is markedly more intense; they don’t have much in the way of over-the-top rituals, but they have vast amounts of ironclad unspoken rules they follow unwaveringly. they’re polite to outsiders, sometimes even welcoming, but you never forget that you are, in fact, an outsider, and that himring and its satellite forts form an internal world others can never quite see. even to other fëanorians, they come across as aloof
their fervour also tends to manifest as a deep personal loyalty that borders on reverence towards maedhros himself. all the brothers command respect, of course, they’re all magnetic personalities who draw people in and bind them together, but maedhros’ minions are on a whole other level. they mythologise him, tell stories of his deeds like he personally holds the line against morgoth, treasure the slightest contact with him, hold being called to his direct service as the highest honour of all. most of the new recruits to the himring host are brought in by the vast pull of maedhros’ reputation, from all across beleriand and even from the north. but no matter where they came from, they all understand that they will fight and live and die together beneath the banner of their lord. which is a bit weird, even by fëanorian standards, but they’re nowhere near as bad as:
ossiriand: amrod and amras’ henchelves are considered by the rest of the host to be notably psychotic, which is saying a lot. the minions of ossiriand are utterly terrifying, absolutely fanatical about the cause, the most bloodthirsty murder cult in east beleriand. you’d think the green-elves they share their territory with would act as a calming influence, but in practice the two groups mostly avoid each other, because the green-elves naturally prefer to stay away from these nutbags. you’d think being away from the front lines would lessen the need to solidify their identity through cult nonsense, but in practice it gives them the free time to go full gonzo. most of the horrible rumours you hear about the fëanorians in the rest of beleriand are either specific quirks of the ossiriand minions, or most egregrious in the ossiriand minions. they have an orc pit
or so they’d have you believe. the fëanorians in ossiriand effectively serve as the host’s intelligence division, scouts and spies and saboteurs. a lot of their work is clandestine by its very nature, and they tend to be pretty secretive about what they actually do. half the things you hear about them are probably disinformation, lies they’re deliberately spreading to make themselves sound scarier. hopefully, at least. as anyone who’s chatted with an ossiriand minion knows, they are both eagerly awaiting the fulfilment of the oath, and already preparing for what will come after
(this paradigm does break down after the siege is broken and the union of maedhros fails and the dregs of the armies of east beleriand wind up stuck in the same ever-shrinking territory. still, i think the origins of the survivors are... interesting. the people of the gap were almost completely wiped out in the bragollach, the people of himlad mostly jumped ship with celebrimbor, even the people of thargelion took heavy losses in the nirnaeth. but the people of himring stood firm around their lord, and the people of ossiriand were never really frontline fighters in the first place. minions from the more cultish parts of the host tend to survive longer, and in greater numbers. i feel this could have... consequences)

Midnight Striga: Fairy Tail/Owl House Cross Fic Episode 6 Part 2
Hello, and once again, welcome back to midnight Striga! Thanks for reading!
With a shout, Eda gripped the arm, slamming the attached body onto the ground. Looming over the hooded figure now gasping on the ground, Eda growled. “Now listen here you sneaky bastard, I don’t know who you are but you caaaaaaannnnnnn!?” She trailed off from her threat, shock rising as the hood fell back.
“Oh, hello, Edalyn!” The old woman cheered, flipping herself up and onto her feet. In a blink, she rushed in, pulling a frozen-stiff Eda into a bearhug. “I have so much news to tell you about!”
Luz blinked, eyes flicking between the two, before the features clicked. Eyes widening, she shot Eda a look. “So… this is your mom?” She asked, pointing at the woman.
Shaking herself back into the present, Eda groaned, lightly shoving the woman away. “Yes, unfortunately.” Giving a deep sigh, Eda turned to Luz, gesturing to the woman next to her. “Luz, meet my mother, Gwendolyn Clawthorne, and one of the single most recurring pains in my butt. Speaking of which,” She turned to Gwen, scowling, “What do you want, mom?”
Gwen gave a beaming grin, tilting her head in apparent thought. “Is it really such a shock that a mother would want to see her daughter?” She asked, neither aware of the way Luz tensed at her question. Both Gwen and Luz reeled back at the response she got, however.
“Yes.” Eda bit out, intense bitterness coating her voice. Standing firm, she put both hands on her hips, head tilted up in anger. “Everytime… EVERYTIME!! You’ve visited me since I’ve been living on my own, it’s been to try some cockamayme cure for my curse. And they. Never. Work!! So yeah, I’d say it’s reasonable to be a little skeptical.” She finished, panting slightly at the exertion of her outburst, lightly covering part of her wrist, and the feathers underneath.
Luz desperately held in the urge to shout at Eda for talking about the woman before her like that, but she could grudgingly admit to seeing where she was coming from. However, neither of them were fully prepared for Gwen’s reaction. Gwen gave a tired sigh, a sad smile forming across her features. “I do suppose I deserved that.” She chuckled, reaching up to Eda’s face, tracing a hand across her jaw, much to her daughter’s discomfort. “I promise, Edalyn, I just want to talk. That’s all. Please?”
Eda bit her lip, conflicted. On the one hand, she was sick and tired of being burned by her mother’s antics… and on the other hand, she was sick of her family being in pain, and was honestly wanting to have genuine quality time with her mother for once. Deciding to take the risk and just bite the bullet, Eda sighed, relenting. “Okay, fine! We can talk.” She said, throwing up her hands in exasperation. Turning a raised eyebrow to Luz, Eda asked, “You want in on this, kid?”
Seeing the two witches giving her matching looks of inquisitiveness, Luz blinked, before rapidly shaking her head. “Oh no!” Pointing to Eda, she continued, “You need this a lot more than I do at the moment, and, if that brief back and forth was any indicator, the two of you have enough issues to work through WITHOUT me being thrown in.” She stated, stepping back, arms raised. Shooting Eda a brave smirk, “Don’t worry, I’ll just make a day of it in town. I mean,” she shrugged, “I’ve kinda got to get used to people being suspicious of me in public all over again, why not start now?”
Coming to an agreement (“If you die, I’m selling all your stuff!” “Love ya too, Eda!), the group headed their separate ways, promising to catch up later. Gwen giddily dragged Eda along, who was personally torn between annoyance at the manhandling, and amusement at her mother’s amusement. “Yeesh, calm down, Gwen! You’re gonna rip my arm off!” Eda half-joked. Gwen’s yanks actually did have a real chance of removing her arms, but it’s not like that was a problem with her condition, really.
“Oh, I’m sorry dear, I’m just so excited!” Gwen squealed, a sheepish grin filling her face. “I just…” Her smile turned sad, “I just really wanted to see you.”
Eda gave her own sad laugh. “Don’t worry, I can understand the feeling.” Her mind flashed back to how she was after she and Raine split up, all the nights she wished they were back, wanting to see them. A thought came to her. “Hey, I just noticed… where’s Hawksley?” She asked.
Gwen gave her a mischievous wink. “Oh, he’s just looking after our other guest.”
Eda shot her a look of bafflement. “Other guest!? What are- oh no.” She groaned, as realization set in. Turning her gaze, she was in no way surprised to see Lilith, glumly slumped over a table before them, Hawksley perched on top of her head. What did shock Eda, however, was the bottle of Appleblood Lilith was chugging. Turning accusing eyes towards an unrepentant Gwen, Eda shouted. “SERIOUSLY!?”
Cheerfully whistling to herself, Luz strolled along, using the noise of her whistling to tune out the whispers and muttering all around her. It was honestly a neat trick, but she was well aware it wouldn’t work forever, especially if she ended somewhere more crowded. Scanning the area, Luz was disappointed, if unsurprised, by the sight of parents tucking their kids behind them as she moved past. It hurt. It was understandable, but it still hurt.
Sighing, Luz slipped into the shadows, rolling her eyes when the sounds of the main streetside picked up in volume at her ‘departure.’ Still, the sheer amount of gossip was entertaining, if only for the wild speculations and rantings of the more… colorful members of the local communities. Seriously, her? A shapeshifting giraffe seeking to supplant the Emperor through a false army of Abominations wrapped in Illusions? Pfft! She was gonna have to tell Eda that one, preferably when she was trying to drink something!
Laughing internally at the thought of an Owl Lady Spit Take, Luz tightened her movements against the wall. Her ears pricked at the sounds up ahead; it didn’t sound like the usual rampant paranoia. And if she focused enough, she was almost certain…
“Look, I know things are… really crazy right now.” Amity’s voice sounded out, confirming Luz’s suspicions. “But I honestly think this’ll be good for all of us. The Moonlight Conjuring is an important aspect of our culture, and is a funtime all around. If you all show up while it’s still daylight, nothing should go wrong.” Moonlight Conjuring? Hmm… something to talk with Eda about.
“B-But what if those Oroboros creeps attack again!? I can’t put my parents through that!” An unfamiliar voice questioned, concerned murmurs of agreement sounding in response.
Amity’s voice sighed. “I… I know it’s scary. The things I saw at the Covention, I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget, not entirely.” Her voice took a melancholy note, before firming. “But in a way, that’s why we have to do this!” At the sounds of confusion, she continued. “That attack was supposed to make us afraid, to make us all panic. Something that it’s managed in spades all across the Isles. But for all that Oroboros is powerful, it’s an organization with a finite amount of resources. They can’t be everywhere at once, and no organization would commit precious resources to attack a party for school youths!” The nervousness died down, replaced with cautious contemplation. Luz gave a little smirk; Miss Blight apparently had a way with words, and some serious charisma if they were already changing their tune.
“I’ll go.” A familiar voice said. It took Luz a moment to place it; it was the voice of that girl who Boscha had burned! Her voice spoke up again. “If you can find someone to protect us, just in case, I’ll go.”
“W-Well, that’s fantastic!” Amity said, faux-excitedly. If Luz had to guess, her friend speaking up had caught her flat-footed, and she was trying to get things under control. “And I know just the person to do so! If you all show up before sundown, I promise, on the Blight name, you’ll all have an amazing time!” At that, all potential opposition crumbled, a chorus of agreements and cheers going up. As sounds of footsteps headed off, Luz peaked around the corner. She saw Amity, jerkily waving goodbye to her… friends? Acquaintances? Her face stretched into a plastic smile.
Suddenly, Amity rammed her head against the wall, knocking her forehead against the stone repeatedly, frustrated grumbles coming forth. “Stupid. Stupid. Stupid! Oh, I’ll find someone to guard us, everyone! Leave everything to Amity, everyone! I swear it on my family name!” She slapped her hand against her face. “Titan, what was I thinking!?”
“I don’t think you were.” Luz dryly noted, walking out from her pseudo-hiding place. Amity leapt back, startled. Luz noted how quickly she shifted into a ready position, one arm pulled back to cast, the other slightly pressed forward to defend herself, legs prepped to spring to either side and out of the way. She was honestly impressed, the girl had some athletic experience.
“Oh! It’s you!” Amity exclaimed, relaxing slightly, if not fully. “Luz, correct?” She said, more than asked, extending a hand for a shake. Smirking, Luz complied, giving the girl a firm grip, Amity’s eyes widening at the painless pressure. Schooling her features into a cordial smile, she grinned. “It’s a pleasure to see you again.”
“Really?” Luz asked, blinking rapidly. She had honestly not been expecting that. She cocked her head. “I kind of expected you to be some level of scared of me.”
“Oh, don’t worry, what you represent terrifies me.” Amity said frankly, the sheer honesty in her voice drawing a surprised snort out of Luz. “However,” Amity continued, her eyes focusing on Luz. “I gained a look into your measure during the Covention. You are wild, independant, and freely and liberally resort to violence even faster than Witches and Demons do. But you’re also loyal, caring, compassionate, and understanding, with a strong sense of duty. While I find you puzzling, your traits are those that I find commendable.”
“HA! Glad to hear.” Luz smirked. Her face shifted into a serious frown, contemplative. “You know, I overheard your little problem. So,” She grinned cheekily, “You need to find a bodyguard, eh?”
“Ugh! Please don’t use that phrase!” Amity near-pleaded, hiding her face in her hands. “My family has been going nuts over my safety. I am honestly lucky that they let me go into town without an armed guard of Abominations!”
Luz snorted, blinking at the mental image of Abominations skulking around Bonesburough, scanning for threats and hovering over an annoyed Amity. “Wow, over-protective, much?”
Amity exhaustedly nodded. “Yeah. My parents… aren’t the best, but they do care about me. Even if they care about our image more.” She said, muttering the last part spitefully. Shaking her head, she refocused on the original topic. “But yes, I need someone who’s willing to stand guard for me and those I plan on inviting to my Conjuring.”
“What about me?”
Amity blinked. “I’m sorry?”
“What about having me be your guard?” Luz elaborated, shrugging. “I’ve got combat experience, free time, and you won’t have to pay me!”
“That’s-!” Amity started, before pausing. She brought her fingers to her chin, eyes narrowed in thought. “That could actually work.”
“Really?” Luz asked, cocking her head. “The offer was serious, but I wasn’t actually expecting you to agree.”
Amity gave a grave smile, nodding. “Indeed, I’m willing to agree to this. If you don’t have any requirements?” She asked, eyebrows raised.
Luz paused, thinking. “If you could invite Willow and Gus, I’d really appreciate it.” She finally said.
“Done.” Amity said decisively, typing up the messages on her scroll. “That honestly works out rather well; ever since their actions at the Covention, their popularity has sky-rocketed and my friends have been wondering about meeting with them so this is an excellent opportunity. If that’s all, I will see you at my home before sunset; you can ask Willow and Augustus for directions.” WIth that said, she turned on her heel, marching off. Luz shook her head at Amity’s antics, before turning to leave herself. Neither noticed the group of individuals perched on a nearby building, the apparent leader’s eyes tracking Luz’s every movement.
“Of course,” Eda muttered, staring in resignation at the sight of her sister, chugging away on the table in front of her. Shooting an accusing stare towards Gwen, Eda moodily stomped over, plopping herself down from across her sister, glaring at her.
“EeeeDalyn?” Lilith blearily asked, words slurring slightly. She hiccuped, bottle awkwardly cradled in her hand, the other bracing her against the table. “Since when are you purple?” She muttered.
“Purple?” Eda said incredulously. She turned to Gwen, concerned. “Is it me, or is she…?”
“Absolutely wasted? No, it isn’t you, she really is.” Gwen noted dryly, casually yanking the bottle of Appleblood out of Lilith’s hands, ignoring her weak protests. “I dragged her out of her barracks, kicking and screaming. I believe a few of the Coven Guards who tried to stop me may be in need of Healing. Now, we are going to take the time to stop, think, and figure things out. As a family.” She said firmly, arms crossed.
The bitter snort came from Lilith, of all people, much to Eda and Gwen’s shock. “A-A family.” She chuckled, swaying lightly. “Is that what we are?” She laughed again, slapping the table. “And here I thought we were a bunch of strangers, pretending we CaReD about each other!!”
Gwen and Eda shared unsettled looks. Gwen hesitantly spoke up. “Now, Little Flea, I know I’ve been… distant, but-”
“DO NOT CALL ME THAT!!” Lilith shrieked, eyes wild, before calming down. “I-I haven’t been ‘Little Flea,’” She muttered derisively, “Since you abandoned me!” She accused, fist pounding against the table.
“Abandon!?” Eda exclaimed, confused and alarmed at her estranged sister’s behavior. “Sis, I don’t know what’s been going on with you, but how has Gwen abandoned you?”
Eda reeled back at the bitter anger in Lilith’s face. “She never came to my induction into the Coven, did you know that?” She said, “She never showed up for any of my promotions, any of my awards, anything!! She just, up and left!” Lilith laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. “And here, I learned that she’s been visiting you for Years!! Trying to cure you!”
Gwen’s eyes grew misty. “I have made mistakes, and I apologize for that, Lilybug.” She said, reaching out towards Lilith, unconcerned when she slapped her hand away. “You were always so strong, so independent. I never meant to ignore you. I’m sorry if I hurt you because of it. But that’s why I dragged you both here!” She pleaded, glancing at the two of them. She wrung her hands in nervousness. “I just didn’t want to fail the two of you again. I know I can’t fix the pain between the two of you, and I don’t expect to. I just wanted to get you two together to hash out some ground rules, if that’s okay?” She explained, a hesitant note at the end
Eda and Lilith shared a glance, a moment of grudging understanding passing between them.
Eda turned to her mother first. “Okay, I guess we can do that. But if you’re serious about being in my life for real, I don’t want you coming around with crazy cures anymore.” Her voice took on a tender note. “If you’re gonna come over, I just want it to be so we can spend some time together, okay?”
“And I’d prefer you to visit me AT ALL!” Lilith shouted, some of the slurring fading from her voice. Eda was honestly surprised at how quickly she was recovering; a glance at her neck, and the Healing Glyph tagged onto it explained much; it was forcibly purging the Appleblood from her body, getting her back to normal. Eda winced; Lilith was going to feel like HELL when that thing wore off. “I want you to visit me, ask me about my day, take an interest in my Life!!” Tears pricked at Lilith’s eyes. “I want my mother back!” She pleaded.
Gwen turned a watery smile towards the two of them. “I think I can manage those requests.” She said, a pleased smile on her face. She grew serious. “Now then, If we are going to act like a family, as a whole that is, I am going to be doing my motherly duties, and establishing some rules for the two of you.” She stated, nodding even as her daughters groaned. She continued, ignoring their annoyance. “The rules are simple; Eda, you are to no-longer deliberately antagonize Lilith. If the two of you run into one another, you are to keep a civil attitude and in no way try to anger or upset her. Lilith, you are to cease your attitude in attempting to bring Edalyn in under the guise of being cured. If Edalyn is brought in, it is to be because she is a criminal and flouting the law, not out of an inane desire to cure her. Besides, I strongly doubt Belos would do so in the first place.” She finished, feeling a smug satisfaction at her daughters’ matching look of dumbfounded shock.
“B-But! He promised me!” Lilith said, whined really. “He gave me his word!!”
Eda groaned, even as Gwen raised an eyebrow. “Lilith, Belos’ regime is built on his Coven System, something Eda’s very existence stands in challenge to,” She said gently, “There are no circumstances in which he will EVER cure her. If you bring her in, he will have her thrown into the Conformatorium, and nothing more. He has all the leverage, and all the authority, and you have nothing that could compel him into curing her at your behest.”
Lilith shakily pulled herself to her feet, staggering off, a mumbled excuse echoing as she rapidly walked off, tears in her eyes. Gwen sighed. That had gone about as well as she’d been expecting.
Eda turned an impressed look towards Gwen. “Well dang, Mom! Didn’t know you were such a rebel!”
Gwen shot her daughter an unimpressed look. “I’m not.” She said primly.
Eda had a look of disbelief. “Really? Because you didn’t have a problem calling out Bonehead on his crap.” She said snarkily.
“That is because I am under no delusions as to his nature.” She said, “Belos’ rise to power and initial rule was tyrannical and cold, utterly without mercy. I, and many others, chose to join his burgeoning power because it was literally either him or complete chaos and anarchy. Not everyone can survive it as well as you, Edalyn.” She said archly, almost daring her to protest.
Eda opened her mouth to do just that, but paused, considering. Ultimately, she sighed, pushing herself away from the table. “Yeah, that’s true. I still hate him, and I always will, but I can get why people shacked up with him, even if I disagree with him on principle.” She grudgingly, painfully admitted. Giving her mother a level look. “This, as short, weird, and awkward as it’s been, was nice. I really hope you keep in touch for real, okay?” She said softly, before walking away.
Gwen just smiled, tears of relief and sadness filling her eyes. It wasn’t much… but it was a start.

Survey #378
“come as you are, as you were, as i want you to be”
Have you ever dreamt in another language? No. How long will you try out something you don’t enjoy before giving up on it? It really depends, but in most cases, admittedly very quickly. What’s something you recently realized or discovered about yourself? *shrug* What’s the most interesting news you read or received recently? What about the most depressing? Not in a good way really, but it was certainly interesting to learn I have such severe sleep apnea. Like, I was certain I didn't. The most depressing would be uhhhh... I guess Jason's mother's death, but I don't know how "recent" you'd consider that by now. Would you let politics get in the way of a relationship? It depends. Some beliefs I absolutely would not tolerate (like anti-LGBT), others I would just agree to disagree with. What is one way in which you need to learn to control yourself? I need to get better at controlling my mouth when I'm extremely upset. Do you use a photo editor? I use Lightroom and Photoshop for photography. Is your dad overweight? No, I think he's actually underweight. Ever been honked at? Yes. What’s the name of the most recent baby a friend has had? Easton, I think? An old middle school friend had him. Have you ever taken medication to help you fall asleep faster? Yes, but they never work for me. How did your parents pick your name? I dunno. If you had to move to another country, where would you move? Canada. Do you have a balcony? No. Who is a singer that has given you chills? Man, I get chills easily with music. David Draiman from Disturbed, his cover of "Sound of Silence" is BREATHTAKING. That's number one. There are many others, they're just not coming to me at the moment. Do you have a drone? No. What was the spiciest thing you’ve ever eaten? Some wings at Buffalo Wild Wings. I got some crazy hot sauce. Have you ever discovered something gross in your food at McDonalds? No. What was the last thing you used sliced bread to make? A sandwich. How long did your shortest relationship last? Like a day lmao. Would you rather have a trampoline or swimming pool? A POOL!!!! I've talked before about how I want one so, SO very badly to exercise my legs without having to worry about sweat, and I can take a break the very moment I need to. Do you own a Snuggie? Yeah, somewhere. Do you listen to any unsigned bands/singers? Who? Yeah, quite a few on YouTube, but my favorite in Jonathan Young. He is SO damn talented. Who is your favorite video game character? Pyramid Head from the Silent Hill franchise. What kind of pictures do you post on Facebook/Instagram/Snapchat most frequently? Mostly of my pets lmao. Have you ever been on vacation with a significant other? No. Have you ever considered “unplugging”/taking a significant period of time away from technology? No. I know I'd never stick to it. Do you prefer to watch a documentary that is about a situation/event or a documentary that is more of a personal character study/biography? The latter. Meerkat Manor comes to mind with that, and everyone knows how much I adore that show. There was also one about rhesus macaques I fell in love with. Basically, I love animal docs, haha. Can you think of a recent time in which you might have been better off resisting, but you did something because you “just couldn’t help yourself”? Probably eating something. When you are getting to know someone, do you tend to worry that the other person will lose interest in you once they get to know the “real” you? Yyyyep. What is something that you would like to do, but really aren’t able to because of your location? (e.g., see art or get a certain job) Man, a lot of things. Photograph meerkats is a biggie. What sort of job do you think is best suited for your skills? Is this an in-demand position or something you’re unlikely to actually get? If I could actually handle the heat and was in good shape to traverse the outdoors, I think I'd be a great wildlife biologist. Even more though, if I could beat my social anxiety, I would ADORE being an animal educator with kids. Do you believe it is the responsibility of businesses, or prominent business leaders (think Bill Gates) to take the lead on social issues whether by using their influence or their money? Saying it's their "responsibility" sounds unfair and puts a lot of weight on their shoulders, but I do feel they should by their own volition and kindness use their position for good, such as through monetary assistance and other things. Have you ever gone to a job interview and realized that you didn’t want the job? Yep. Have you ever asked that someone sacrifice something (a habit, relationship, job, etc.) for you? A habit, yes. Looking back it was stupid as shit. What would you call your body type? Ew. Has anyone ever hacked your accounts before? Yes. Do you enjoy big holiday dinners? Considering I spend them with my sister's bigoted, homophobic, and racist in-laws, not especially. I always feel very uncomfortable and disliked among everyone for being the "black sheep" among 'em. Is your vision good? God no. Even with my glasses, it's very poor. I need a new prescription badly. Do both of your parents have jobs? Mom has something of the sort, like she cleans a local church for a small pay, but it's not really a "job." She's still recovering from cancer, getting her strength back up and such before she can handle a consistent job. Dad's had a job for as long as I've lived. What is something you’ve always wanted a boy to do for you? How heteronormative. But whatever. It's so fucking cheesy, but singing a cute song to me while slowdancing sounds so super adorable to me. What food are you craving right now? I am craving something sweet like you wouldn't believe. It's annoying. Have you ever been in a car accident? Yes. Do you have a lot of scars? Yes, but most are very negligible. I just scar extremely easily. Last person you saw other than your family? My primary doctor. Last movie you’ve seen in theaters? The The Lion King remake. Who was the last person you played a video game with? Ummm I think Girt. Last game you played at an arcade? Zero clue. What was your favorite nursery rhyme as a child? I THINK I particularly liked "The Itsy-Bitsy Spider?" None stand out strongly, though. What is your favorite cousin’s first name? I don’t have a favorite cousin. Would you prefer to travel around the world by yourself or with a friend? I think with a friend to prevent loneliness, but at the very same time, I see a great beauty in traveling on your own. Just taking new things in, seeing so many different cultures, beautiful scenery... I feel it'd be a great chance for exploration of insight. Remind yourself how small you are, that there's a much, much bigger picture than your own problems, that people are so unique but hopefully share common morals... I see a lot of poetry in it. Do you like the smell of coffee? It's one of my favorite smells. If you have a favorite photographer, can you describe their work? I can't possibly pick. I watch literally hundreds on deviantART, and many of them absolutely blow my mind. What’s one aspect of your life that did not turn out as you expected? My lack of a career. Outside of school, have you ever used a thesaurus? Well, online ones for writing. When you see a good-looking girl in skimpy clothing, what is your initial thought? I envy her confidence, like gotdamn girl. Have you ever been in a lighthouse? No. Are you on a laptop or desktop? A laptop. What color is your shower? White. Where do you order your pizza from? Domino's or Little Caesar's. What was the name of the last dog you pet? We've been calling the dog we're holding right now Zoe. Have you ever had anything stolen from you? Yes. Have you ever seen the White House? I don't think so, but it's possible I have when we've driven up to New York, but from a distance. How about Niagara Falls? No. What do you like in your salads and what dressing do you prefer? I just like regular iceberg lettuce with some bacon bits and ranch. Man, that sounds good right about now. Any posters of a band on your bedroom wall? Yeah, Metallica and Marilyn Manson. Do you think it’d be cool to have your body mummified after you die? No. I couldn't rock the mummy look even if I tried, haha. Can you tell the difference between a Scottish & an Irish accent? Not really, no. Can you read music? I used to be able to. Do you work the night shift? I don’t have a job, but if I did, I absolutely do not want to work the night shift anywhere. Have you ever slept over at your best friend’s house? Yes. Is your mother diabetic? Are you? She is, but I'm not. Would you like to learn how to make ceramic pottery? It'd be cool, sure. Ever sang someone to sleep? No. Who did you last kiss? My cat. Why did you last lie? I don't recall. Probably to just avoid confrontation with Mom. What do you put on your hamburgers? Cheese, ketchup, and mustard, generally. Who do you think cares the most about you? My mom. Have you ever sent a dirty picture? No. What’s at the center of your dining table? Honestly, we sit in there so rarely that I don't even know. I think we might have nothing, actually. Have you ever started a rumor? No. Do you like being outside? If it's cool, yes. What’s your favourite condiment? Maybe ketchup. Or honey mustard. Who sang/played the last song you listened to? Chris Motionless is the singer of Motionless In White. I don't know if that's his real last name, though. Do you like yoga? I used to. Now all the bending and shit would make me dizzy as hell with my "how are you still alive" level of low blood pressure. Do you always carry breath mints? No, but I do carry Tictacs with me, but they're for my dry mouth. It forces you to salivate, so it helps. What do you think your reaction would be upon entering the White House? I don't really know. I honestly don't even know how it looks inside. Thinking about it, I'd probably be more scared than anything, waiting for a bomb to drop or some shit lmao. Have you ever grown your own sea monkeys or dinosaurs? OH MY GOD I LOVED those!!! I definitely did! Have you ever thrown a game controller (or the game) and broke it? No, I've never been the type to do that. If I'm SERIOUSLY getting mad, all I do is tighten my grip. Did you ever own an Etch-a-Sketch? Yes. Do/did you ever have glow-in-the-dark stars on your ceiling? I believe so. What movie were you really worked up for that ended up disappointing you? My answer is Warcraft, but only because the fucking orcs' voices were so baritone that I couldn't understand them almost ever lmaooo. Like I had a mild idea of what was going on because of the game, but still. What part of a paper is hardest for you to write? The intro, or the conclusion. Both are difficult to me. Like I want to compose a gripping beginning as well as an end that doesn't just repeat everything I've already said and ends on a strong note. Does it bother you that almost everything is done on computers now? No. KFC Chicken: original or extra crispy? I don't like fried chicken. Think about your first kiss. Did you have any idea what you were doing? I mean, I guess? Like I'd seen kisses enough to know how to give someone a peck. It just came naturally. Did you get Happy Meals just for the toys as a kid? Not just for the toy, but it's the main thing I wanted, sure. Have you ever seen your parents cry? If so, how did it make you feel? Seeing my mom cry absolutely destroys me. I don't want her to hurt EVER. Especially if it's seriously unfair bullshit that has her upset, I also get very angry (not at her, of course) and protective. I've seen Dad tear up once, back when he was telling us about his mother's funeral, and I felt immense surprise more than anything. He does NOT cry. How do you feel about animal testing? It's fucking disgusting and barbaric. Find a different goddamn way. Do you add condiments to your ice cream, or just eat it plain? If I'm having vanilla, I'll usually add chocolate syrup. Have you ever witnessed a crime? Yes. What’s the coolest personalized license plate you’ve ever seen? I'm forever gonna get a kick out of this one that just said "omw," haha.

Part 2: Leader x Hero
A continuation (here) as requested by @silverwhisperer1 !
Assuming another continuation is requested, I will be naming these characters, and when I do, I'll make a key as to who is who so there's no confusion!
******
"So I see you had a nice time running off again," Teammate commented, not bothering to even look at Hero as she cooked bacon on the stove.
"You can't just assume that I went off and got myself-"
Finally turning with a raised brow and cruel smile, Teammate said, "I heard you hissing in the bathroom. Leader, make sure to change her bandages daily. You don't want any infections, Hero."
Hero took a seat on a high stool behind the long island. The team's base was located in an old refurbished bar on the coast of a more or less private beach. It wasn't so private that rebel teenagers didn't stop by and graffiti the walls before taking prideful selfies with their work. It was those times that Teammate 2 got the team's Rottweiler riled up and barking viciously.
There were many aspects of the team Hero loved, but there was always the nagging piece of her that wanted to be alone. Alone was comfortable. Being alone meant she didn't have to rely on anyone but herself, which she would admit now, was becoming a little rocky. But that just meant she needed to work out more, right? Work out, get a harder shell. And maybe she could work on strengthening her powers, or capabilities as the team called them.
Once upon a time, Hero was the only person she knew with powers- capabilities. Even the people she fought weren't able to counter Hero's attacks. She moved so quickly, she could hardly be seen. But now...now everyone was adapting. Hero had actually been caught the one time, and not only was she caught, but she was rendered- well, she was rendered human. When you use powers for so long, you begin to rely on them. Simply sprinting isn't helpful anymore.
That was perhaps one thing Hero was grateful for about the team. The reason they called powers capabilities was because it made the idea of not using them easier. If you are simply capable of something, you can acknowledge that it's maybe not necessary to use them nonstop. Hero was getting to the point that she used her speed to run to the bathroom. She could have walked to the bathroom no problem, but she had powers and what were they worth if she didn't use them for anything? But that was exactly why she came to rely on them. She'd forgotten how to walk normally.
A hand landed on Hero's shoulder and she followed the arm attached to it to look at Leader. "You alright? You're spacing out again."
"Yeah, yeah. I was just...thinking." She added, "About how things were before the team. In a positive light though. I still run off and do things you say are foolish, but I'm learning." She explained her previous reliance on her capabilities, and how on her last runoff she didn't use them at all. It was likely the reason she got so injured, but it was exposure, she thought. Hero needed to get used to not using them, to only use them when absolutely necessary.
"You're doing great, my sweet." Leader acknowledged her troubles, her struggle with reliability and trust. It was something he took note of often, because it came up often. He would reassure her whenever she needed though. It wasn't a bother. Leader loved Hero and just because she was going through a tough time didn't mean he loved her any less. In fact, it was her struggle that made him even come to fancy her at all. Or rather, it was the strength she had in fighting those struggles that he admired. Despite the stressful things Hero did- like trying to fight new crime on her own- he knew that it was somewhat necessary. He only wished she would at least take backup with her from now on. She didn't even have to use the backup unless it was absolutely needed.
"Bacon's done!" Teammate hollered, despite the majority of the team already being in the kitchen. "If ya want eggs, you can make 'em yourself," she declared before plopping down on another stool and already shoving a piece of bacon in her mouth. Teammate made a face then explained as she saw Hero's amused look, "That piece was burnt."
Teammate 2 pushed the doors open from the sleeping quarters' hall. "You burnt it?" Then, "Yes!" He didn't wait another beat before sliding in front of the stove, stealing the most blackened pieces of meat. Now it was Hero who made a face of disgust. Teammate 2 was odd like that; he loved everything burnt. Popcorn, bacon, hamburgers, caramel. He claimed he loved the tang and that it did 'funny dances on his tongue'.  Teammate liked to joke that he had a 'hidden stash of some loopy stuff' under his bed.
The final member of the team strolled in slowly, holding a newspaper. He released the paper with a hand to push his thin-framed glasses up.
"You know, you'd probably learn about the news much faster if you watched it instead of read it," Teammate jested at Teammate 3.
His response was to recollect his paper in both hands. "Maybe for you," was all he said. Teammate 3 had the capability of, easily said, speed reading. He took in information- words and numbers- faster than a machine. He could finish an entire newspaper, images included, in just seconds if his hands could only move that fast. Hero offered to help him turn pages, but he always said he could 'manage on his own'. He reminded Hero of herself, but in a more cold and callous way.
The speed-reader slept most of the day. He had alarms set so that he could eat and read his newspapers. He read more than one each day- some in different languages, specific to differently cultured cities within the states- so that he had a very large idea of what was going on, what could potentially need the help of the team of heroes. The mass amounts of sleep was to throw away the trash, like silly rather than political cartoons, and only retain the important information he read.
Hero hadn't realized Leader left his stool until he was now returning with two plates of bacon. "Thank you." She smiled big, cheeky.
"Of course, m'love."
"Now why can't you bring me plates of bacon, Teammate 2?" Teammate huffed.
He laughed. "Because you have legs and I have no use wasting mine. They're already deteriorating. They won't do so more at your expense." Teammate 2's capability was a little more harmful than everyone else's. Every other hero on the team could use their capability whenever, no consequence. Teammate 2 had the unfortunate trait of having thin blood. And no blood thickening medication helped, most likely because he had capabilities that counteracted what the medicine did. Whatever the reason, medicine didn't help. When Teammate 2 used his powers, his blood thinned further, his skin shriveled, and sometimes it didn't always return to flushed skin. His feet were practical bones; it's why he always wore shoes, even in his sleep.
Teammate huffed. "Teammate 3?"
"No," he said, not looking up from his paper. He'd already turned the pages various times. Hero figured he was probably reading a completely different paper at this point.
"Alright, fine. Guess I have to get my own second plate of bacon."
There was the sound of a crash on one of the televisions in the bar. The whole team turned around, even the speed-reader, who said shortly after turning, "I could have told you that was going to happen if Teammate hadn't been distracting me."
"Hush it!" Teammate said quietly and worked to mute the other t.v.'s.
On the news, there was a building crashing, pieces falling off and undoubtedly meeting the ground crushing whatever- whoever was beneath and couldn't get out in time. It was only a matter of time before the whole building fell and who knew how many people were inside of it?
Leader said hurriedly, "Hero, go. Use your capabilities. Go, go, go." She didn't wait to hear the other orders, to know what her teammates would be doing. She ran.

Part One Part Two
_
When Bucky stepped into the kitchen his mother was in her usual place at the island. What worried him was that his father was behind her chair. Bucky knew well enough to take his seat across from his mother. His father eyed him the entire time, a look of disdain on his face that was reserved specifically for Bucky. Bucky's father was better than him in every way. Taller, stronger, more handsome, smarter, and infinitely more talented. A silence hung in between the three, the kind that pulled tighter the longer you held it until you reached a point where it would be painful no matter how it was broken.
"I can't believe you. Right now, I honestly could care less if you were found dead in a ditch. In fact, that might be an improvement to our current situation."
A glob of spit landed on Bucky's face. He didn't dare wipe it off. He felt the telltale sting of his father's slap across his face, then again on the other side of his face. His father's rings digging into his cheek and brow bone. He knew there would be blood. There was always blood when his father punished him. Especially now. Last night's fresh wounds would easily be reopened.
"Stand."
Bucky did as he was told, moving far enough away from the chair to give his father room enough to be able to circle him comfortably if he wished to. Bucky would be cleaning the floors later. They were lucky the tile was brown. A white tile would be much more difficult to clean.
"You were with that fucking zombie again."
His father accentuated each word with a blow to Bucky's face.
"They are disgusting."
A fist.
"You are disgusting."
A knee.
His father's rings stamped images onto his body. They would resurface later in the form of bruises. He grabbed Bucky's wrists, nails piercing the skin.
"I thought you learned your lesson after yesterday boy."
He threw Bucky on the ground collecting the skin of his wrists under his fingernails. He slammed his foot into Bucky's back as a preventative to stop him from getting up.
"Don't lie to me boy. If you tell me you learned your lesson I don't want to see it again."
A series of kicks fell onto his back and sides. The beating couldn't have lasted more than a couple minutes, but it felt like hours. It felt like it would never end. His mother didn't participate. She merely watched, sipping her martini and occasionally checking her watch, as if this was just a slight inconvenience to her. In all likeliness it probably was.
"Stand."
Bucky again did as he was told. Any other time he would've submitted. But he didn't want to not see this zombie anymore. He wanted that kindness. He needed that kindness.
"May I speak, sir?"
His mother and father exchanged glances before he gave a curt nod.
"I wish to explain the reason I am associating with the monster."
His mother's eyebrows raised, eyes widening.
"You mean you did not wish to create a friendship with it?"
"No ma'am. Of course not. I just have him do tasks for me. He's like a servant. That's all I'm using him for. He is a filthy zombie. I would never want to be around him otherwise. I promise."
His mother looked to her husband. Being the reasonable one out of the two he had hoped that she took to what he said. She could convince his father of anything.
"You know, dear. That isn't a terrible idea. That's very resourceful of you son."
His father laughed. A rare sound coming from him. It was deep and loud. It wasn't happy. It induced no joy, hearing it. Quite the opposite. The rumble instilled a deeper fear into Bucky.
"Why didn't you say that before we taught you your lesson, boy? Now clean up and do whatever it is you do. God knows you're never home. Just be quiet; we're going to bed."
"Yes sir."
His mother and father left the room. Bucky was able to let out his breath. The first thing he did was clean the blood away from his eyes as best as he could. He made quick work with the mop, disposing of the end and replacing it once he had cleaned the pools on the floor.
_
The sounds of the night filled the air. Homemade windchimes hung outside. They didn't sound good or look particularly impressive, but they were an important part of zombie culture. Art deco in general was a huge aspect of zombie culture. They turned trash into something creative and beautiful. It decorated their houses and their lawns. It was a thing of pride. The windchimes currently jingled unceremoniously. Crickets sang their songs, exchanging melodies with the frogs and the cicadas. Although there technically wasn't a curfew the Z Patrol would still chastise zombies for being out at night so Zombietown was always quiet after sundown.
Of course, on such a beautiful night it would have to be disrupted. The sound of something hitting the chair that served as a window cover rang out. Zeb turned over, covering his head with his pillow. The metal tang continued.
"What the hell." He mumbled.
He threw his blankets off and shuffled to the window, pulling the chair off its nail. In the dirt, down by his stoop stood Zebina. She beckoned him to come down. Zebina never went out after dark. She didn't even go to mashes. Zeb didn't even think she stayed up past ten o'clock. He swung his legs over the railing and hopped into the ground.
"Bina, what are you doing here?"
"The wolves, they're having a campfire. They invited us."
Zeb wrinkled his eyebrows. Zebina, most likely sensing his confusion continued.
"We hung out while you were at your cheer stuff. So are you coming or not?"
"I- yeah."
They hurried to the outside of town where they were met by a wolf named Wynter. The two seemed close, sharing inside jokes as they made their way to and through the forbidden forest. As they approached you could hear howls and laughter. A large fire raged in the center of several wolves. Zebediah didn't love fire. He wasn't scared like some zombies, but he tended to stay away from it. Zebina, on the other hand, was fascinated; she loved fire. She went immediately toward it, greeting other wolves. She was uncharacteristically social. Zebina didn't have a lot of friends; she and Zebediah had been friends since elementary and had just stayed close. She didn't have time to make friends; she had to study. Yet, she already seemed close to them.
Now alone, Zebediah looked around, spotting a semi-secluded spot away from the fire to sit. He decided he'd wake up a little bit before joining the group. Before he got the chance, a wolf came over to him. He remembered her name was Willa. She was kind of scary, but Zeb smiled at her anyway.
"Diah right?"
"Zebediah, yeah."
Zeb moved over to allow her to sit.
"Bina talks about you a lot."
"Oh God, what does she say?"
"Bucky? That asshole?"
Zeb sighed. "Zebina doesn't understand why I like Bucky so much."
"Neither do I."
Willa raised an eyebrow. She looked bewildered. People usually were. He got side eyes whenever he called to Bucky. Zeb shifted into a more comfortable position. This would be a long conversation; he could tell.
"She doesn't pay attention. Nobody does really. I don't blame them. We're all so caught up in our own lives; we don't take the time to look at what's happening with people. Nobody looks behind the brash exterior. He's either a monster or he's a cheer god."
Willa's face wrinkled into something between anger and confusion.
"He is a monster though."
"No. He's not. He's not a cheer god either. He's just a person. A person with thoughts and feelings. A person who makes choices based on things that have happened to him."
"Don't you ever just feel like all your kindness is wasted?"
"Sometimes, yeah, but everyone deserves kindness."
Willa didn't seem happy with his answer at all.
"But he treats everyone, including you, like crap."
She stood, throwing her arms in the air and pacing.
"Kind of, but also kind of not. It's an act. Next time your around, pay closer attention to his facial expressions, to how he words his sentences. Just look closer, I implore you."
Willa stopped to look at him and chuckled.
"You're so nice. Forgiving. You're just like Wyatt." She shook her head, then looked back up at him. "I don't like Bucky, but your decisions are your own. I think whatever this is will go down in flames. I do wish you the best though, you seem like a good kid."
"I'm older than you." Zeb jested.
"I'm wiser."
"Are you though?"
Two shared a grin before Zeb thanked her.
"I am quite tired and I certainly wasn't expecting this conversation tonight, so I think I'm gonna head out."
"Do you need walked back?"
Zeb shook his head before walking over to Bina, informing her of his departure. She managed a 'later loser' before resuming her conversation. The wind was comfortable compared to the humid heat the season brought. Instead of going home, he decided to head into Seabrook.
Willa wasn't wrong. Before this week, Zeb had only his speculations to go on that Bucky wasn't as bad as he seemed. It was childish of him to hope for something more with him. But he stood by his decision that everyone deserved kindness. Especially the people who didn't get it.
He wandered for a couple minutes before he saw a familiar form. It was Bucky. He looked awful. Something was wrong.
_
He supposed adrenaline was the only thing keeping him from passing out. He staggered through the streets. The streetlights blurring together into streaks of light. The houses and trees blurring into paint strokes. He didn't know why he didn't dress his wounds before he left. He needed to get out of the house.
Bucky ran into a solid object. Zebediah.
"We have to stop meeting like this."
Bucky needed to tell him about him helping him.
"I need to talk to you."
Zebediah looked him up and down. There was worry in his eyes, the same kind that Addison gives him.
"You need to get fixed up. Come on, we have stuff at my house."
He started to walk away.
"No, I'm fine I-"
"Bup bup bup. We are going to fix you up and then you can say whatever you needed to say."
Zebediah softly grabbed his fingers, urging him to follow him. He complied.
He didn't know why he was surprised when they walked through the gate. This was where all zombies lived. Zebediah would be no different. He had been here several times before, never really looking at the scenery, just thinking about how to impress his father. It was all trash. All of it. The house they walked in was barely put together. It was such a contrast to what he was used to. Even inside of Zebediah's room it wasn't much better. Everything in it looked as if it had been taken out of the trash. His nose wrinkled when he realized most of it probably was.
He didn't complain that the bed was uncomfortable, although it definitely was. Zebediah stood in between his legs. He had rags, tape, cotton sheets, a bowl, and a bottle of alcohol.
"It's the best I can do. We don't have any antiseptic, so I'm so sorry. This is going to hurt a lot. Tell me if you need me to stop."
Zebediah cradled the back of his head, wiping the blood from his face. He was soft. The rag dusting over his skin. His eyes fluttered closed and he was calm. Nothing could happen to him.
"Grab my arm if you need to."
Bucky didn't need to grab his arm. He wasn't a baby. Then the sting came and Bucky's eyes snapped open. He squeezed Zebediah's forearm. Hard. Zebediah looked into his eyes to make sure he was okay to continue, then covered the cuts that were still bleeding.
"I need you to take your shirt off."
Bucky started to, but he struggled. He couldn't get his arms over his head. Zebediah reached to help him, grabbing the hem of the collar.
"I can do it myself."
He didn't mean to snap. He just- He didn't need anybody's help. Zebediah removed his hands. Bucky messed with it for a couple of minutes before getting it off. Zebediah began to wipe the blood off of his abdomen. He kneeled in front of him, one hand on Bucky's lap. As he assumed, there were bruises everywhere. Little stamps imitating his father's rings. It stung again. Bucky grabbed his arm. He was certain he was hurting him. Still, he didn't complain. He simply circled to his back.
"There's nothing on your legs, is there?"
Bucky shook his head. The air was freezing when Zebediah took his hand away. He handed Bucky his shirt and left to put everything away. He did feel better, not great, obviously, but better. He wasn't covered in blood. That was good.
Bucky's eyes looked to the doorway as Zebediah entered. He sat on his bed and Bucky turned so they were facing the same way.
"Who did this to you?"
Bucky didn't answer. He knew the question would come up. He wanted to answer, but he knew what would happen if his parents ever got wind of it. To be fair he'd be dead meat if his parents knew where he was right now. Before he could decide Zebediah spoke up again.
"Were you in a fight?"
Bucky shook his head.
"Was it- Was it your parents?"
Bucky didn't say anything. He didn't nod or shake his head. He just stared at his toes, hands fiddling in his lap. It was a while before Bucky built up the courage to say anything at all.
"Please, don't tell anyone."
"But we need to help you. I can't just sit and do nothing."
"Just, please."
Zebediah's face worked, but he nodded. Neither of them spoke for some time. Bucky thought about what he said earlier, and the building curiosity forced him to ask.
"Earlier, you said we have to stop meeting like this. What did you mean? How do I know you?"
Zebediah chuckled, although Bucky couldn't think of what could be funny in this situation. Was it obvious? Was he forgetting some huge event?
"A couple years ago I was out past curfew. I heard somebody knock over a trashcan."
Bucky remembered the night he was talking about, not necessarily what he had done wrong, but certainly the punishment. Thinking back on it, Bucky should have known that the boy was a zombie. He hadn't gotten a good look at his face but he had been staring at his hands. Which were gray. And his clothes, no Seabrook citizen would go out dressed like that, even at night. Even then, he still thought about that encounter every now and then. He remembered his voice. It had lowered since then but it still had that same quality. This beautiful melodic tone that sucked you in, made you listen. How in the hell had he not recognized it?
"It's getting kind of late."
Bucky stilled at the thought of going home.
"You could stay if you like."
He let himself sink back into the bed, nodding his head gratefully.
"I don't have extra blankets or anything, but you can take the bed."
Zebediah went to leave the room and Bucky panicked. He couldn't be in here alone.
"Wait," Zebediah turned to look at him. "Could you sit by me?"
His eyes widened. Bucky shied away from his gaze, rubbing his hand on the back of his neck. It was his turn to be surprised when he felt the bed dip. Zebediah sat at the head of the bed, leaning against the wall. Bucky hesitantly moved to sit next to him. They sat silently for a while before Zebediah started talking.
"You know, you're gonna be great someday. Not that you're not great now. You're gonna get out of Seabrook. Find a big house, probably like four bedrooms with a pool in the backyard.  You'll get a membership to the gym down the street."
It was soothing. So soothing that Bucky couldn't help but let his eyes close and his mind shut off.
_
Zebediah was in the middle of his story when Bucky fell on his lap. He pet his hair. This is why he did it, why he was so ceaselessly nice. Because you never knew what someone was hiding. Aware that his position was not the best for his back he tried to shift Bucky as best as he could into a lying position. He was going to sleep on the couch, but Bucky grabbed his arm. Zeb could've pulled away if he wanted, but he didn't want to hurt Bucky in any way. He laid on the bed, careful not to bump him. He was hyper-aware of every single move he made. He didn't want to do anything that could further injure him or make him uncomfortable.
Zeb had settled into a half-sleep when he felt an arm wrap around him. He startled awake before remembering Bucky was here. This was a dream come true. Zeb managed to settle back into a comfortable dream state.

(p1) okei, what i think I can gather about you from your art/writing,(bare in mind i haven't read your long fics/most drabbles yet tho). Your 200+ OC's of different nationalities show you want to live in a thousand cultures, have a thousand lives and live in every part of history, but as you cannot, you have 200 OCs which is almost like containing 1000 souls (very relatable tho).... But 200+ OCs and your longest AU's are massive, show yeah 👀👀 And you enjoy ships that bicker... cos....
(pt2) cos the intimacy needed for that is HUGE. You love the 'i love you, i hate you, but i cannot escape from you' -> bonus points if it's history, language or culture that ties your ship together. Additionally: -completed devoted to the one they love (and would suffer for them) is a dynamic that interests you -u think the italian language is hot af -i get the feeling that michele is either how u want to be loved (idyllic love), or michele is how you love, cos that's your comfort ship (sic/ire)
1. That's pretty accurate! I have this fear that I'll never have enough time on this earth to do what I want (but I've been working on getting rid of that fear. There's enough time). I'm so fascinated by the world that we're living in, what used to be and how it relates to what is. The endless multiplicities of identity that a group can contain or even an individual.
So indeed, I make OCs based on what I learn about the world and in turn the OCs give me a good way to interact safely with the knowledge I find. It's a perpetuum mobile of creativity and knowledge.
And history is just the entirety of human experience on this planet, so trying to breathe some more life into it via Historical AUs is one of my favourite ways to engage with it. I love writing term papers as much as trying to apply the scientific findings to actual people. (I think one of my favourite things may be Sexuality in the res publica AUs, the do's & don't's that aren't the same as they are now. I freed Michele & Lovino from their catholic guilt, only to immediately constrain them with the class & gender expectations of the Roman Republic lmao).
2. I never thought about it like that, but yes! I enjoy bickering because it's an admission of closeness! You can't have friendly bickering if you're not close! (Which is why Hugo & Alois Are Like That. I enjoy them constantly mocking each other greatly, but it's never friendly and it always ends in a mess).
My family had and has its shares of problems, but I know that we love each other. Immensely. We're also that kind of family to constantly poke fun at each others, so I think that's why I instinctively resort to this kind of dynamic, with any kind of close relationships. It's not the ONLY one, because that would be boring, there are so many more ways to express love and it naturally doesn't suit every kind of character.
(I just remembered when we were at the lunch table and my dad spotted a magpie on the stable roof.
Mom: " ... why are my curtains pulled back again?"
Dad: "So that I can watch magpies.")
Here are some more non-romantic examples from my work/with my characters:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
AA(The last one was a response to a tiktok that was basically "Asking your nice friends for fashion advice vs asking your mean/honest friends for advice")
3. I DO love the "i love you, i hate you, but i cannot escape from you". Maybe also for personal reasons, we're not getting that private on here. It's one of the inherent tragic aspects of Hetalia that has fascinated me for a long time: They're human and they feel like humans, but they lack part of their free will. They somehow have to survive entire lifetimes, loving and hating and remembeand worse, they have to bear decisions they themselves don't necessarily make. The relationships they form with the only other people like them, whether it'd be bonds of platonic, familiar or romantic love, the only solace and stability might have, may be snatched away from them. It can turn to hate or grow cold or another nation can disappear afterall and there is nothing they as individual people could have done about it. It's a double-edged sword - You tie yourself to someone who could be your raft as well as sink you to the bottom of the ocean.
I inevitably ended up keeping this kind of relationship in my "Like Father Like Son" Universe. Now, quick disclaimer - I am not saying they are solely the victim of their circumstances. They're all criminals in my AU and I have zero patience for making excuses for the Organized Crime. I worry greatly about the problematic aspects of my work and am well aware of them. The last thing I ever want to do is actively romanticize the Mafia. I want to add for the following part, too, that I draw as much on the real world as possible, but the structures of the organized crime in LFLS are a little more reminiscent of Monarchy or Aristocrazy.
With that out of the way however, the worldbuilding in LFLS mirrors their existence in Hetalia. Escaping their position would come with great dangers, even though their existence as is will never allow them true happiness. They're different from the people around them and there is a special connection between the Hetalia characters as bosses here - All of them inherited this position. They all basically suffer under the same yoke, they all are faced with the same difficulties. And, like in Hetalia, some of their decisions are out of their control. Business overrides their private life. They have to look out for their own people and families, for their own survival, so they may hurt the ones they love. And yet, and yet, they cling to one another. Try to make it as functional as possible. Take the pain for the relief. It's not pretty, but it's fascinating as an onlooker and fictional tragedies are also a great outlet for one's own emotions.
4. That also kind of ties in with "completed devoted to the one they love (and would suffer for them) is a dynamic that interests you". Hells yeah it does, because two people losing themselves is beautiful. Yes, it can be toxic, yes one should take care of oneself and have boundaries. But unconditional love is something I believe we all yearn for and I hope I one day get to devote myself to someone else again, as much as is healthy.
Again, it's also not just perfect for lovers, but for siblings and guardian figures. Paddy would lay his life down for Harry, Charlie & Soph. ("There's no pain that I won't go through/Even if I have to die for you" - Starset; "I love my children more than anything in this life! I will chose their happiness over mine, every time!" - Slightly changed version of Congratulations from the Hamilton Mixtape).
Gilbert who's so eager to be here for Ludwig and to protect him; to take anything off his brothers shoulder that he can.
And on the romantic side, is there anything better than two people simping head over heels for each other??? Or when a character wants to kiss/fuck another one so bad that it makes him look stupid??? I also love more quiet, more serene relationships, but to appreciate their calm, you have to make a storm to compare them to. All storm or all calm only gets you bored and exhausted.
5. Hell yeah do I think the Italian language is hot af, who'd disagree with me? It also unlocks emotions that were previously unavailable when I listen to Italian music. (German does the same. There is just something to each language that it can express certain feelings in a way like no other). YOU tell me that you listen to Shimmy Shimmy by Takagi & Ketra and aren't hypnotized by Giusy's voice. No other soundtrack for my Sicilians, Greeks and Turks fooling around on a beach and being highly erotic with each other.
6. Hm, this may be tying in with 2 again. I think I'm more of a Harry, personally, to be honest! (Nerdy, got aggression problems, cheeky, hothead, can't really cook). I think SicIre is my comfort ship because it's the type of love my parents had. It's what I am most accustomed to and there's also just a beauty in not caring what the rest of the world has to say and doing your own thing. And Harry isn't the prettiest bloke on the block and will probably never think of himself as beautiful, but that is fine because Michele looks at him like a sky full of stars. And the entire world can tell him Michele's a bastard, Harry won't listen to them. From a hetalia standpoint, these two are islands who had to suffer a lot from foreign occupation and being regarded as backwards & weird. Sicily tries to keep the autonomy it has and makes sure that others know they aren't like the mainland and Ireland fought hard for its independence from the British empire. From a LFLS standpoint, Harry embraces Michele with all of his past baggage and jagged pieces. Harry is the first person Michele never fell out of love with, the only one, and he's here to reassure Harry that he is worth caring for every step of the way.

Next Round: Crowns & Hops on Creating Space for BIPOC Beer Entrepreneurs
Tumblr media
Airing between regular episodes of the VinePair Podcast, “Next Round” explores the ideas and innovations that are helping drinks businesses adapt in a time of unprecedented change. As the coronavirus crisis continues and new challenges arise, VP Pro is in your corner, supporting the drinks community for all the rounds to come. If you have a story or perspective to share, email us at [email protected].
In this episode of “Next Round” VinePair Podcast host Zach Geballe speaks with Crowns & Hops Brewing Co. founders Beny Ashburn and Teo Hunter about their 8 Trill Pils Initiative, four new flagship beers, and what they’re doing to combat systemic racism in the craft beer industry.
While Black Lives Matter has recently shined an essential spotlight on the need for Black and Brown representation in the drinks world and beyond, Teo and Beny have been advocating for the Black community for several years and began creating safe spaces well before 2020 BLM activism.
Most notably, they recently created their 8 Trill Pils Initiative to provide funding for new Black entrepreneurs within the beer industry. The name alludes to a report released by the Kellogg Foundation, which makes a business case for racial equity. The study found that most industries’ lack of diversity and inclusion is a result of systemic racism, and that if we focus on racial equity today, our country stands to see a GDP impact of $8 trillion.
By partnering with BrewDog, Ashbury and Hunter have helped raise $100,000 in grants available to Black-owned craft beer businesses — but it doesn’t stop there. The Crowns & Hops founders have been working hard to encourage conversations about diversity and inclusion in craft beer, in which less than 1 percent of breweries are Black-owned.
In this episode, they discuss the harms of cultural appropriation, their relationship with craft beer, and how consumers and producers alike can improve BIPOC access to craft beer and brewing.

Zach: From Seattle Washington, I’m Zach Geballe. And this is “Next Round,” a VinePair podcast conversation. We’re bringing you these conversations between our regular podcast episodes in order to examine how we move forward as a drinks business during the Covid crisis. Today, I’m talking with Beny Ashburn and Teo Hunter, co-founders of Crowns & Hops. Thank you both for being here.
Teo: Thank you.
Beny: Of course. Thank you.
Z: Let’s start where I love to start these conversations, which is how did the two of you first get into beer? Were there any particular beers that stand out as being influential, or experiences? How did you come to the beer world?
T: Well, first and foremost, thank you for even having us in this conversation. I think anytime we have an opportunity to talk about our platform, the movement that we’re a part of, and ultimately our business, is great. So thank you for that. Personally, I got into craft beer over a decade ago. I’m going to say probably about 12, 13 years ago. I think with a lot of individuals, primarily in the entertainment industry, a lot of people here in L.A. are not from L.A. So one of the things that was pretty common was people seeking out local beer, and I just wasn’t aware of that concept. So once it was introduced to me, I just kinda got bit by the bug. I would say the first beer that really changed things for me was Pliny the Elder. But fast-forward about five, six years after that, I met Beny. And Beny and I started to realize that there was just a lack of diversity and culture in craft beer. Because at the time we were dating, and we would visit a few local places and often saw that we were the only people of color. And just being in the industries that we were in I think that that appeared to be a unique opportunity for us to say something. And I’ll let Beny chime in and talk about her experience at that time.
B: I think when me and Teo first met, again, the funny joke is we met on Tinder. So we always say we’re the most successful slash unsuccessful Tinder couple of all time. I wasn’t that familiar with craft beer. Like most people of color, Black people, I knew beer from the Heineken and the Coronas and the malt liquors, et cetera. But Teo really introduced me to the world of craft beer. And for me, the excitement about it was more of the culture and the community aspect of it. He brought me to the Stone facility and I didn’t even know that something like that could possibly exist where you can have families hanging out playing games but also drinking this wide variety of different styles of beer.
And I think that’s what I fell in love with, which made it really easy for us to partner to help identify “How do we create a lot of these same safe spaces and this culture for Black people, for Brown people? How do we do that?” And that’s really how we started. By curating experiences and content that truly opened up, and expanded the palate, and preserved the culture for people in the craft beer space. And that’s what we’ve continued to do all the way up until today.
Z: Awesome. So on that topic of creating space and protecting the culture, did you find when you were getting into craft beer, and as you’ve continued down this path of trying to create these spaces, that there was a lack or is a lack of diversity? Something that’s a tough question to ask, I suppose, but is it the idea that there needs to be spaces that are more inviting to people of color? Or is it more just that breweries need to be inviting to everyone?
B: I think it’s a little bit of both, right? I think it’s the lack of ownership. It’s the lack of overall consumers that you see physically inside of breweries. And then it’s the lack of overall understanding of what craft beer actually is. And I think that’s where it starts, and we don’t think it’s been personally people absolutely excluding Black and Brown people from the craft beer space.
It’s just, you don’t know what you don’t know. And a lot of breweries you’ll see are in a lot of areas and communities of color. So if you walk by a brewery, and you don’t see anybody in there that looks like you, oftentimes you’re not going to go inside. You’re not going to feel comfortable. You’re not going to want to be a part of it. And that’s what we need to change. And that’s how we’re moving forward. And that’s how we really led into our 8 Trill Pils initiative and dealing with racial equity. But I’ll let you explain more about that.
T: Sure. And one of the things that I think is unique about both Beny and I is we really approach it from two different perspectives. I kinda came in from the craft beer connoisseur position. A Black man appreciating craft beer and befriending, and really working to build trust with a lot of the craft breweries in my community. And Beny really approached it from just being brand new and not knowing anything outside of what she was experiencing for the first time. That was not only through her lens, but through seeing me negotiate space, and obviously you can only solve a problem or an issue if you recognize it. And that’s probably been up until this point the biggest hurdle. People did not recognize it as an issue or a problem.
Rather, they would continue to snowball it into something that’s political or something that is taboo to discuss or to talk about. And if you keep a problem or a dilemma in that taboo space, to where you can’t even have an opportunity to have a discussion or explore it, then it’s impossible to solve it. There’s no way to solve that. So I think Beny and I, we always try to create a space to not only talk about it. But as most times at any craft beer bar, the likelihood is when people start talking about things, it ultimately will come down to one or two things: “How are you doing? How’s your family doing? How’s your kids doing?” And, I think that’s where we really leaned into the concept of our racial equity initiative, 8 Trill Pils.
Z: Yeah. Can you talk a little bit more about that? I know you’re giving away money for Black people in the beer industry, but maybe you can give a little more detail.
T: Sure. The concept came from a report that we read that was written by the Kellogg Foundation on a business case for racial equity. And it was one of the first times that we saw as entrepreneurs an actual case study that was created that showed the benefit of accomplishing racial equity and, and ultimately what the report identified is that most of the lack of diversity and inclusion is a result of systemic racism. And if we start to diminish that, and if we start to focus on diminishing the areas that eliminate the opportunity for someone to be productive — so in housing, in education, in criminal justice, in entrepreneurship and employment or all domains that there tend to be disparities for people of color, there’s probably going to be a lack of productivity.
So, our goal was to really try and impact that as much as we could as entrepreneurs and shed a light on that, so that people understood that accomplishing racial equity isn’t a zero sum game, but rather, as an industry and as a community, we get stronger, for ensuring that these disparities don’t exist in those domains.
So, we created the 8 Trill Pils fund, which was a figure that they called out based on if we focus on racial equity today, our country stands to see a GDP impact of $8 trillion. And you know that clearly is something where we all win. And we kicked that off with an 8 Trill Pils beer and 8 Trill Pils Fund that is supported by BrewDog, and I’ll let Beny get into some of the details of that relationship.
B: Yes. So 8 Trill Pils, and then going into the fund and BrewDog. So, two years ago we were recipients of BrewDog’s development funds. So they have been really supportive of us in everything that we’ve been doing, which has been great. Even before Black Lives Mattered, so to speak.
So as part of our 8 Trill Pils initiative, they are working with us for this $100,000 grant that we like to say we’ll be giving back specifically to Black-owned craft beer businesses to help them financially, in terms of sustaining growth and really establishing their businesses inside of the craft beer space, as less than 1 percent of craft breweries are owned by Black people. We would really like to make a dent in that number and change the conversation. And our fund is opened up to more than just brewery owners. Because as we know, opening a brewery can be extremely expensive. We’re talking specifically to Black-owned craft beer businesses who want to just take space inside of craft beer. So that could be just a taproom, or a bottle shop, or even a mobile craft beer truck. There’s so many ways and points of entry. We really want to help change the narrative in the industry to have more cultural and physical ownership inside the space.
Z: I’m curious, you mentioned all the various ways in which systemic racism creates these massive challenges and also hampers entrepreneurship and opportunities for economic growth. I’m wondering, one of the stories I’ve heard many, many times from craft brewers is, “Oh, you know, I got started homebrewing” and we know that Black homeownership is a huge challenge in this country. You know, as with everything else, there’s just incredible inequality. Are there ways that Black people or other people of color who may not have a garage, or a space to homebrew in the way that might be commonplace, or in areas that are more densely populated, and there’s less space period. Are you doing anything or working to create that base of “brewing know-how” that feels critical to developing a brewery? You know, you have to know how to make beer to start out there.
T: Sure. Well, I think one, you have to consider the privilege and or the mechanisms that would need to be in place to allow someone an opportunity to understand how they could brew beer. And to your point, it helps to have a garage or a space to be able to do the beer itself. And also when you first got exposed to the concept of brewing, traditionally people were exposed to it in college, or they’re exposed to it because a family member did it, as well. If it’s intrinsic in that community for information and or exposure to happen on that, then you have to look at why there wouldn’t be that type of exposure in the first place. And that’s where we ask for people to investigate. I think one of the things that we also have to consider is, we weren’t the first person or the first Black-owned brewery.
We weren’t the first Black brewers. There have been amazing individuals in the space, to include homebrewers, that we probably have never heard of. I think what we then challenged people, especially the income and industry to explore, is again, what was the paradigm that allowed for someone to not only pick up that passion or pick up those skill sets, but also to develop it? To grow it, to have the audacity to say, I’m going to try this out. And if it doesn’t work, I’m not going to lose it all. I think a lot of people might project that they had that amount of risk involved, but ultimately, there are a lot of brewery owners that I know of that had homes, that had a mortgage paid for, that inherited capital, or whatever the case might be. That’s not every situation, but it’s more often than not. And I think one of the things that we ultimately tried to do with our initial entry into the industry was to provide a level of exposure, because ultimately once you get exposed to something you investigate it yourself.
And that’s what wasn’t happening, Zach. There was a lack of exposure, a lack of opportunity, a lack of opportunities to gather and celebrate something that ultimately you can make at home.
Z: I want to shift gears a little bit and just ask about something else that feels very topical right now, although obviously has a long history, not just in beer but, I don’t know, America? And that’s this idea of cultural appropriation, especially in beer. And I would just love to hear from the two of you, your thoughts. I don’t even necessarily have a question other than just an observation that I’ve seen plenty of examples of Black culture being appropriated in white spaces in beer. And I would be curious to know each of your thoughts.
B: Yes. So, there’s been a lot of that that’s happened over the years, particularly in craft beer. Knowing that a lot of these cans are “limited edition” and they’re kind of “one-hits,” the amount of culture or misappropriation of culture that’s used to sell beer quickly happens quite often. A more recent example is Evans Brewery put out a beer called “WAP.” What did it stand for?
T: Wet Ass Pilsner.
B: Right. And used pretty much Cardi B and Meg Thee Stallion’s likeness completely.
T: No, they used it exactly.
B: They used it exactly. Let me be very clear. They used it exactly. And with no regard for the culture of what that actually represents to the community. They’ve not said or done anything as it relates to even discussing or mentioning all of the issues that are literally going on right now in this country. But yet, they took something super specific, something very personal and popular in the Black community, and used it to sell beer. And that happens pretty much all the time. And I’m sure Teo has more to say to that.
T: Yeah, and this is where the problem lies. The argument that we’ve heard and that we’ve seen — to include from Evans Brewery — was that it’s an ode or a parody or in some way to poke fun, which we get. We’re not without a sense of humor, we understand that people have a love or appreciation for something. In this particular case, it took the exact acronym. It took faces of Black and Brown women, that don’t appear anywhere within a way they project their community and their current company. To us again, if you just look at the sheer definition of cultural appropriation, it is essentially using someone else’s culture and identity for benefit by a dominant culture.
And if you look at that from a craft-beer lens, the reality is no one would have heard of that beer if it wasn’t for them using that acronym. Regardless if they shifted it or if they used their image, it’s really unfortunate that you have to argue against an industry that clearly understands what it means to protect your IP. What it means to protect an idea. And for someone to not understand the difference between leveraging someone’s culture, especially a culture that does not have the significance — again, less than 1 percent of all breweries in the country are Black-owned. So where are the checks and balances going to come from if it’s not going to come from the industry internally? And unfortunately Vinnie and I, there may be a few other influencers, are part of the few that have dedicated ourselves, regardless of the impact, to drawing awareness to this. Because it ultimately is theft, and it’s even more so when we’re in a climate like we are in today to where people now have a clear understanding of what systemic racism is and the impact of it. So to culturally appropriate, especially in this era, is just completely ridiculous.
Z: And you mentioned the current climate, too, and so I wanted to ask about that as well. Do you get the sense that maybe — setting aside the last example, because obviously that is one side of it — but has the discussion about a lack of especially Black ownership in the craft beer space become easier? At least maybe more digestible for people, particularly white people? Since the re-emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement and a lot of conversations happening in spaces all over the country and in all kinds of different industries, have you noticed a change, or is it still the same uphill battle?
B: Yes, we’ve absolutely noticed, but I think what’s so crazy is the first step that everyone noticed is that there aren’t any Black consumers or Brown consumers, even in your brewery. So, we’re moving into the space of ownership because that’s progressively how this evolves. But I think the first jarring thing that everyone identified was, “Wow. We didn’t even realize there weren’t Black people in our taprooms or having our beer, or in any part of our consumer base.” And that’s where it started. And now we’re evolving into creating more space where ownership is an option, and I’ll let Teo chime in.
T: To your point, would it expose the most specifically in craft beer? Just saying that you weren’t a racist isn’t enough as it relates to doing the work that’s needed to dismantle white supremacy and racism. I think many breweries started to understand that they were essentially creating havens for racist activity and rhetoric and thought. And I think if you look at the pillars in craft beer being community, being selfless, being supportive of small business and entrepreneurs and mom and pops, it’s all centered around protecting and creating safe spaces for the community.
If you as a business owner do not take actions to be anti-racist, then you were essentially creating the space for people that experienced racism to not feel safe. And I think that’s probably one of the biggest things that the industry has finally started to understand, in addition to understanding that wearing a “Black People Love Beer” shirt isn’t a sign of racism. It’s a sign of showing that a conversation needed to be had. And also a sign of saying, “Look, I’m open to having a conversation about why you might be experiencing a lack of diversity and our thoughts on how we can solve it.” And Beny and I have been pretty consistent about that for the past six years. So I think if anything, it truly amplified what we had been doing the entire time and why we were doing it and why it was really for the benefit of everyone. Because at the end of the day, we all win if there’s more craft beer drinkers. Right, Zach?
Z: Absolutely, and I think it’s important to note, what you said about creating spaces that are actively anti-racist as opposed to, “Whatever, we’re just a brewery. We don’t think about those kinds of things.” This is important and something for listeners to note, for sure. But I am wondering, too, obviously it’s a bigger conversation or a longer answer than we can get into in all detail here, but besides things that I would assume are meaningful — but I don’t want to assume too much — whether it’s signage or the PR presence on social media, that may indicate an avowed anti-racist stance, are there other things that breweries can do? What are some ways that they can be more inclusive? Maybe especially if they’re not aware so far in the ways that they haven’t been inclusive.
T: I think one, we don’t ask that anybody pander, we’re not looking for people to all of a sudden adopt a culture or become something that they are not intrinsically. I mean, that’s ridiculous. What we are asking for people to do is to not treat this like it’s something political and to not treat this as something that we can’t discuss and can’t have a conversation about. It’s exactly why we created the 8 Trill Pils Initiative. To give individuals, industry leaders, industry professionals — everything down from a CPA to a law firm to a brewery that just wants to help — an opportunity to help people that are interested in creating these spaces and growing this community, and an opportunity to contribute in any way that they can. It doesn’t always have to be monetary. It doesn’t always have to be time, it could be mentorship. It could be offering the services or paying for some services so that someone can have their books looked at. Whatever the case might be.
I think it’s a matter of understanding that there is a disparity in resources, and what we can do in terms of filling that gap with regards to what a brewery can do, specifically. Again, I think messaging says a lot. Especially if you are in a Black and Brown community, and I think Beny can probably speak to a few of the strategies as it would relate to making sure that when you showcase community, that you’re actually showcasing the community that you’re in versus just a community that’s in your living room.
B: Yeah, I think, a lot of it comes from just having employees and people that look like the community physically working inside of the space. It really does change how the consumer interacts with the business. Really, just having any kind of relatability inside the space really changes the tone of the overall business. And that’s really just the first place to start. Let’s get more people in the door that look like the people that you physically want inside of the space. In terms of marketing and promotions, a lot of these breweries are now leaning towards social media just to talk to consumers. If you’re only promoting consumers that look one way, how are you expecting anybody else to care or get involved or want to support your brand? Because they won’t feel like you’re supporting them. And those are just some very basic ways to change the conversation and change how you’re seen in the space. But you know, as small as those are, a lot of people aren’t even acknowledging or identifying. That’s step one. That’s how you can move forward.
T: In the digital space, I guess the best way to say to any brewery or anyone: Change your algorithm. And stop creating a situation where you’re only looking at the things that only serve you and look like you and sound like you. When you change that algorithm and when you consider something that’s bigger than just you, that’s community. And I think that’s what we would ask for breweries in this community to do.
Z: Gotcha. Let’s talk a little bit more about what you all are doing right now, not that these efforts are not obviously hugely important, but my understanding is besides the 8 Trill Pils, you make some beer. What is the status of that? And how is it going in this very strange year of 2020?
T: Yeah, it’s definitely strange. But I think Beny and I really focused on creating a plan of essentially contracting, because what we realized is that there was nothing on the shelf that really represented who we were and who we are as a community. So we wanted to deliver on a promise of making sure that the Black community, that people that love hip hop, that people that love culture, had a product that they could support. That has alignment with the founders.
So we’ve been able to really get some exciting recipes throughout California, some parts of Oregon as well. We’re in about 400 retail locations right now that can be found through our store locator or beer locator on our site that you can access on your phone as well. But the goal has really been just to work with our team and put out some incredible recipes. This month coming up, we have four flagship beers. A stout called Urban Anomaly. IPA, which is already out now, called Elevated Cipher. Go out and get it. Pilsner, that we have called Beat Messenger, and we are going to make BPLB, which is our hazy IPA, one of our flagships as well. So they’ll be on shelves all together for the first time at the beginning of November. So we’re excited about people getting these recipes as we continue on a path of working towards our brick and mortar.
Z: Awesome. Well, I really appreciate the two of you taking the time. Super-interesting and insightful and meaningful conversation. And I certainly encourage people, if you’re curious to learn more, to check out our other content on VinePair that we have written about Crowns and Hops.
T: You guys actually made one of the coolest illustrations of us, which is pretty cool. I think we’ll probably blow that up in the brewery at some point
Z: You should put it on a can! Actually, I don’t know that I can sign away the art. But like I said, I really appreciate your time and insight and look forward to revisiting some of these topics down the road — hopefully, as the craft beer industry has progressed and evolved.
B: Absolutely
T: Vote early everybody! Vote early, and especially, if you don’t mind me saying, make sure you’re reaching out to your grandparents, your great-aunts and uncles, and people that can’t, and help them as well. This is definitely a time where we need to make sure that everybody’s voices, regardless of what they believe, are heard and that they just don’t assume that it happens automatically. So we’re excited about, and motivating people to do that. And Beny, any last words?
B: In addition to that, if people are able to mail in their vote, know that there are very specific mailboxes that are safe and guaranteeing your vote will make it and be counted. So please consider that as well if you are not able to get to the polls.
Z: Yeah, absolutely. Voting is a fundamental part of living in a democracy. And if we don’t all do it, democracy stops happening. So thank you both so much. And, I look forward to talking to you again in the future.
T: Likewise, Zach.
B: Absolutely. Thank you.

What is Spiritual Health?
by: J.A. Shaheed
Have you ever listened to someone speak about their spiritual practices and been at a loss as to what exactly it is they talking and how their use of crystals helps them with it? As if you’re grasping at straws trying to wrap your brain around this seemingly elusive concept? Have you just not gotten this thing called spirituality everyone seems to be talking about lately?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
Spirituality refers to any personal practice that connects you with a greater good and allows you to take time to put things in perspective, giving you a greater understanding of your true feelings and beliefs. Essentially, spirituality refers to people’s journey towards wholeness and peace and what that journey looks like as well as the end goal is unique to each individual. Because spirituality is personal and largely defined by the individual, it makes sense that some people can get lost and confused by the ambiguity of spiritual practice; whereas some people use prayer as a way to practice spiritual wellness others may be very big fans of reiki and aura cleansing—there is no one clearly defined way for one to practice being spiritual.
Being so dependent on the individual, spirituality can be practically anything, but it is not religion.
Many people have the tendency to conflate spirituality with religiosity when the two are in fact separate concepts. Religion refers to an organized belief system that typically includes shared values about God or a Higher Power, whereas spirituality is not confined to religious traditions or even a belief in God. Again, spirituality refers to the practices one takes to recenter themselves on days where the world seems to be spiraling out of control.  A person can be religious and spiritual, using a religion as a medium to achieve a state of peace, but religion is by no means a prerequisite for someone’s spiritual journey.
Diverse Perspectives
Because of the many health benefits that have been shown to be related one’s spiritual wellness, it is important to debunk this myth about spirituality and religion. In order to do just that, I spoke with three different women with varying degrees of religiosity to find out how spirituality played a role in their everyday lives.
Tumblr media
Jennifer Green, a non-denominational Christian
For me I think spirituality means having some type of connection to something that’s higher than you or greater than you and somehow letting that weave into your everyday life.
The benefits of being spiritual? Girl. So, I definitely would say that when I feel connected or am in a state of spirituality, I tend to worry less because I start to take things into perspective… What I’m doing right now isn’t going to be for the rest of my life, whatever trial I’m going through right now isn’t going to be permanent. Things happen, that’s just how life is, we just need to adapt and be okay with it and know that there’s a future ahead.  And then also, for me, it’s really important that I don’t depend on myself and really say that everything depends upon me, but rather acknowledging that there are other things going on that are out of my hands.
One good way for me to practice being spiritual is by writing in my journal. I have a daily journal that I don’t write in daily–but I want to –and it’s just me like… for example I’m Christian so I’ll write to God every time I can. And I’ll just talk about my day or how I’m feeling or anything that’s happened as well as giving thanks for the things that I’ve seen and sometimes asking what’s ahead. And I sometimes go to church, not so much while I’m at school, but when I’m at home I try.
Tumblr media
Gina Mundy, raised in the Southern Baptist church, but has mover further and further away from it over the past ten years.(PC: Gina Mundy)
Spirituality to me means wholeness and my mind and my body is all a part of that, but keeping myself positive, kind of encouraging myself throughout the week, that part I think comes from something that’s not very tangible… It’s like you’re adding more water to your cup or adding more something. That is what spirituality is to me;j  spirituality is  the content of that cup and the cup is my body.
In terms of practicing spirituality? For me I was raised Southern Baptist which is something that I’ve moved farther and farther away from over the past ten years, but I think there are still parts of that that I really deem important to my spiritual health. One of those is listening to gospel just on a regular basis. It’s one of my favorite things to listen to when I’m exercising because not only am I working on my physical health but it also helps with my mental health and those together really boost my spiritual positivity. It also keeps me encouraged and really pushes me to do better, to know that I have great potential which I sometimes think is easy to forget and just get bogged down in the details.  So for me it’s really listening  to music.
Another one of my favorite things, and it’s like going back to my childhood, but one of my favorite books in the bible is about Esther and it’s my absolute favorite. I would get bored in church and read the book of Esther and I love watching all the documentaries and movies surrounding her so I also do that. I look at really awesome quotes and one of my favorite things to do is read something that actually has nothing to do with spirituality, but it’s one of those things that makes me feel more full and more aware of myself in the world.
As for the impact spirituality has on my overall being, I feel lighter, I don’t feel so worried. I feel more capable of handling the stress in my life. I feel like okay, I can do this. It’s just easier. It’s why I enjoy running because I feel like it’s this connection to nature and to myself and so I feel more in tune with what’s going on around me. I feel like I’m a better person to myself and to people around me.
Tumblr media
Tatianna Nelson, raised Catholic, but no longer considers herself to be religious in any way. (PC: Tatianna Nelson)
I guess I would say to me, spirituality is about your overall health because I feel like.. this is a hippy dippy answer, but I feel like your spirit refers to your mind and body as one rather than two separate things. I also guess it’s just that idea of oneness as well as working on yourself.
How I practice spirituality? Well I’m super into astrology so, that’s one thing I do. I feel like most people would say meditation and I’ve been doing really poorly at mediating or doing yoga which I really like because it also incorporates that idea of the whole mind and body as one thing. And you can’t separate yoga from the mind or else that would be cultural appropriation. Like, why would I do yoga as just a form of physical health? But yeah, even though I haven’t been keeping up with it I do like those things as well. As for other practices, I’m looking more into crystals; I’m not completely sure how that helps with spiritual health per se, but one of the people I follow on Twitter, Mysticxliptick, is always talking about crystals and selling them so I’m interested.
For me, spirituality is really helpful with mental health. I think spiritual and mental health are also kind of one in the same because your mental health can affect your entire being and your spirit is that being.
Back to spirituality in general though, I’m not really that religious in any way, but for people who are, prayer is also a form of meditation and that’s part of keeping up your spiritual and mental health. Typically the first thing that pops into my mind when I think of spirituality is a bunch of hippy dippy stuff, but anything you do to be calm, to just be present in where you are and the moment you’re in is important to not only your spiritual health, but general health overall.
The narratives provided by Green, Mundy, and Nelson clearly highlight the diverse ways in which spirituality can be practiced. Being the most religious of the three, for Green religion was deeply intertwined with her conceptualization of spirituality—her belief in a higher power and the habit of writing to God every day—whereas for Mundy, religion played more of a supporting role. Unlike Green, her overall concept of spirituality was not defined by a existence of a higher being, but the gospel music and Bible stories she read as a child still impacted the ways she achieved a sense for wholeness. For Nelson, her practice of spirituality fell more in line with the stereotypical “hippy dippy” perceptions of astrology, crystals, and yoga and these practices still worked for her without the incorporation of religion.
There are so many ways to be spiritual—there’s no need to let religion confine or exclude you.
The Importance of Spiritual Health
Relating back the benefits of establishing some form of spiritual health, despite their different approaches to spirituality, all three women reported similar benefits: the ability to put things into perspective, an improvement in mental health, greater encouragement, and the ability to be more present in the moment. These benefits  fall in line with research on spirituality that has shown spirituality to help with relieving depression, managing stress, and restoring ones sense of purpose, again highlighting the importance of tending to this aspect of health.
At the end of the day, whether you choose to incorporate religion, take hikes, check your horoscope, or write in a journal, it is clearly important and highly beneficial to pay mind to your spiritual health. One of the best things about spirituality is that it’s personal and defined by the individual so you don’t have to wait for someone to tell you how to be spiritual—just go out there and find what works for you!
In writing this post I thought about what helps me achieve a sense of wholeness and peace and my answer was poetry. As a Muslim, I am still trying to work my way up to praying five times a day, but when focusing on the less religious aspects of spirituality, some of my go-to poets for when I’m in need of calming include:
Rumi
Nayyirah Waheed
Nikita Gill
Rupi Kaur
e.h.
Additionally, for those interested in the “hippy dippy” side of spirituality, here are some people you may want to follow:
The Hood Witch
Hey Fran Hey
Mysticxlipstick
Finally, a mental health professional I found to be very helpful when looking into the importance of spiritual health was Jose M. Cervantes, who took a very intersectional approach in considering how different people develop and practice spirituality.
“…the specific language of spirituality is guided by one’s ethnicity and culture; gender defines the form of that essence; sexual orientation defines the attitudes and reactions; disability defines the level of compassion and service.”
-Cervantes and Parham, Toward a Meaningful Spirituality for People of Color: Lessons for the Counseling Practitioner
Cervantes’ research on the intersections of cultural diversity and clinical spirituality can be useful to anyone interested in learning more about how people of color uniquely experience and benefit from spirituality.
Stay healthy, be happy!
much love,
J. A. Shaheed

Survey #377
“you’re such an inspiration for the way that i will never, ever choose to be.”

Life as I know it, for now.
Hi All,
I’m back, and I wanted to explain my absence in writing recently, why I’m back and what I’ve been doing.
After searching for months after I graduated Uni, I got myself a full-time job (Waheyyy!) A job that is full on, but each day is different and has allowed me to develop. So in some aspects of life, I am keeping my mind and wallet full.
This is also the reason for me writing less and less- well it’s not the job’s fault, it’s mine really. I had well and truly joined the cycle of millions of people around the world. Getting home of an evening, sitting down and watching some mind-numbing reality T.V, rather than get off the couch and do something to broaden my mind. And believe me, I am still actively trying to change this.
Like a lot of us, I have also promised myself I would get fit, and go to the gym, forcing myself to do some (if any) exercise. Like many people, my form of exercise was walking to and from the fridge (until I fell ill- but that’s a different story) or from the loo to the tele. Whilst I was in Vegas I decided I will push myself to go.
I also haven’t blogged in a long time due to fear. What would I write? Who would be interested? Would I get laughed at or offend someone? But at the end of the day, I am doing this for me more than anyone. This is MY online diary, dang it. I’m the one inviting you in and I am happy to discuss my writing with those who are open and willing to listen as well as speak. All those keyboard warriors beware- I have a degree in International Relations and I’m not afraid to use it. J
If I’m also honest, during this time I have suffered a lot of anxiety. Which is difficult to explain and talk about. I know I have had it for a long time and I think for the most part I am good at hiding it, however I am not sure I am there enough to discuss it yet. I will do my best to explain in another blog at some point soon.
For now, I can only assume most my triggers for anxiety have been my own fault, from bury my head in the sand.  It is difficult to overcome ; the triggers change each day. But since last year I have taken the time to face these issues heard on.
I have, for the first time in a long time grown a back bone and let go of things that made me unhappy. I sorted out things that, despite imagining them going away, weren’t. I started with sacrificing things- a big apology to my family for this, as I decided it was time to sort out my looming university overdraft over Christmas, not a good move, but well worth it for the long term. I promise you all that ‘this time next year we’ll be billionaires’ and I will buy you the presents you all deserve.
I lost people along the way, I stopped becoming a door mat for ‘friends’ who had no regard for my feelings or others, unless it was to use me as a scapegoat or for when they wanted help. Friendship goes both ways. And believe me this was hard, especially living in a small town with only a few limited people I could socialise with. But I realised that only being friends with people in the same geographical location as you, or you’ve grown up with doesn’t always work out. The small town dynamics seem to breed an atmosphere that unless you’re engaged, have kids or have moved in with your other half by the age of 24 you are less of a person, immature and need to sort your life out.
I do absolutely believe it takes courage to have kids and become someone’s wife. I’m not for a second suggesting it is ever the easy option. But it is very hard to explain to others why these are just not for me, not yet anyway. I suppose my frustration comes out when others don’t understand why I would rather develop myself, work hard and travel rather than settle for the ‘picket fence.’
Not there is anything wrong with it, but for me it’s not on the top of my list. I want to travel, meet new and interesting people and ‘find myself’ (it’s a cliché I know.)
I now have very few, but precious friends to me (they know who they are and I love them for it) who despite our family and life differences support me and are always a phone call away. So, a massive thank you to them, I love you guys. And when/if I ever get married or have kids, or whether I’m half the globe away, I know you will be right by my side, as always. <3
What have I been doing other than work and writing?
I have been blessed with being able to travel.
In the last 4 years I have been to Portugal, Holland, Egypt, Turkey and the U.S. Each was an amazing and lifechanging experience. I’ll explain more below.
I made my first trip outside of Europe and travelled with James to Egypt and it was unforgettable. We went in 2014 and 2015, which probably weren’t the best times to go, due to the political and social unrest in the country. And it would be true to admit that travelling to Sharm El Sheikh wasn’t exactly getting into the deepest, darkest parts of the country that would spark a lifechanging story, but truthfully it was.
Whilst we were there I went Scuba diving and learnt about the importance of conserving marine wildlife (mainly from James, who is actually a genius and knows something about everything!) I loved every second, and I came back from the excursion convinced my life dream was now to be a marine wildlife photographer. Yes, I know. I am a flighty and indecisive individual, but I will, will, will get my PADI Licence and go diving in as many places as I can.
I tend to remember the stories of those I meet whilst I travel, and it was no different than when we had a conversation with one of the bar staff. It turns out he was 19, the same age as James, to which he got very angry when he found out. If I remember correctly he was told by his manager to go and take a break during one of our conversations.
We asked him what the matter was, worrying that we had offended him in some way, but he apologised and said that it was not the case at all. The fact we were around the same age as him and able to afford to go away to a 5* resort upset him. The Arab spring and aftermath of political and social unrest back in Cairo where his family lived, had left him in a very difficult position. He was working miles away from home, at the hotel we were staying at so he could provide and support his family. He also had a wife he was supporting, who was by coincidence studying at university back in the U.K, who he only saw 2-3 weeks a year.
Remembering this conversation, reminds me of how lucky I am and hating myself for taking the opportunity to go away for granted. It is easy for us in the western world to distract ourselves from other cultures, and states’ realities, so long as we have our smart phone and the latest IPad, what more could we want in life, right? Whilst other countries are in the middle of civil unrest, their objective and subjective security are at risk and we sit back and worry that having 1 more mouth to feed would mean we’d have one less cheeseburger we’re able to eat from Maccy D’s.
Millions of people back in 2014 and even more to this day are risking their lives in order to gain what we take for granted. And the problem has only become worse not better. So, share the luck and wealth people, and good karma will come your way!  Those who need help are not only thousands of miles away, but on your doorstep, so if you convince yourself that the middle East, Africa or other war torn starts are ‘too far away’ - go to the streets, and if you see someone who needs help, give them a handshake and a listening ear.
In 2016 I also went to Turkey- Yeah, yeah I know. It does seem like I often go looking for trouble.
But anyway, it was another country where I felt more welcome than places in Europe. Me and James, as always did a lot of excursions and had the most amazing time. I think this was the point where I decided that if I ever had a hen party, I would much rather go diving, do water sports or dirt biking than making cocktails. Take note girls!
As usual we didn’t tend to lay about on the beach for long and wanted to look around Icmeler, to which point we met Assad, a shop owner down one of the town’s side streets. He was a lovely chap, and was pushing for us to stay and speak to him and have tea, despite it being light out and them fasting for Ramadan. He was keen to play the host and find out more about us. We kindly declined the offer for tea, until we could come back and enjoy some with him in the evening. However we did stay for a short time and spoke to him about the persecution of Muslims and the ever present issue of extremism and the creeping social unrest Turkey.
He wanted peace as much as those from the western world did. He doesn’t support the cause of extremists, nor did he support the generalisation of his religion, where he had grown up with teachings of peace, respect, and love. It was an honour to speak to him and find out about his life, his family and share stories with him.
Last but not least of the amazing holidays I have been on is our recent trip to Las Vegas, where the family and myself went away so that my Mum and Neil could get married and we could have a family break. I learnt some amazing things from unexpected people, our helicopter pilot who took us around the Grand Canyon knew so much about the history, geology, and geography about the area, and allowed me to take some breath-taking pictures of the scenery.
I got the chance to see my cousin and his lovely wife and get to know them a little better. Growing up I was always seen as one of the younger ones, so it was great to chat to them and listen to how their lives had changed since Ryan moved to the States. I appreciated seeing Ryan, who understood how awkward and English I am compared to the American way of in depth conversations rather than a smile and nod, especially in elevators. Thank you for sharing Mum and Neil’s wedding with us, and sticking around, just so we could hang out. I will definitely be coming to Missouri once you’ve settled in and I’ll bring James with me. J
Whilst on a quick break so I could vape (I know it rhymes but I don’t have a better way of saying it) I met some unique characters. I wanted to say a big Thank you to Earnest, who is the person I least expected to be a 54-year-old Psychology Professor at Alabama University. Speaking to you and finding out your background of teaching, the military and travelling, as well as the reassurance that you don’t always have to belong in one ‘place,’ was unexpected, but needed.
As well as this it was great to meet Ellie from London, and have a conversation with her and David from Mississippi about the difference in Western cultures, Real Estate and Guns. It was actually refreshing to know that although the rest of the world might group us into one category there are major social, political and economic differences between the U.K and the U.S. Whether I agree with these is a different story all together.
So, what’s new with me? Not a lot that I can show (other than the above) but mentally I feel in a great place and I feel motivated to allow myself the space to become a better and less closed off individual. My outlook on life has changed over the last year, and I hope with optimism and support from those who are close to me I can continue to tell my stories and look forward with anticipation to whatever comes next.
My Bucket list for the next year:
·         Get PADI Licence,
·         Join and adult language class
·         Go to the Gym
·         Write first Screenplay.
·         Capture more moments on my Camera
 Speak soon!

Brian Eno: Weve been in decline for 40 years Trump is a chance to rethink’
The revered producer has been at the centre of pop since the days of Roxy Music. But dont ask him about the past hes more interested in how to reorder society
Brian Enos new album is called Reflection, and what better time to reflect on an astonishing career? Or careers. Theres the first incarnation of Eno as the leopardskin-shirted synth-twiddler who overshadowed the more obviously mannered Bryan Ferry in Roxy Music. With his shoulder-length hair and androgynous beauty, there was something otherworldly about Eno. He was as preposterous as he was cool. So cool that, back then, he didnt bother with a first name.
After two wonderfully adventurous albums he left and Roxy became more conventional. There followed a sustained solo career, starting with the more poppy Here Come the Warm Jets, progressing to the defiant obscurity of his ambient albums and on to commercial Eno, the revered producer behind many of the great Bowie, Talking Heads, U2 and Coldplay records.
There is Eno the visionary, who helped conceive a 10,000-year clock and invented an influential pack of cards called Oblique Strategies that offer creative solutions for people inapickle. There is Eno the visual artist;Eno the activist, tirelessly campaigning for a fairer world; and Eno the philosopher, endlessly thinking of ways in which to bring thisnew world about.
We meet at his studio, near Notting Hill in west London. It is a mix of the minimalist and maximalist. Minimalist in its big white empty spaces, maximalist in the numerous books carefully filed away (library-like sections for African, Asian and European art), old-fashioned hi-fi equipment, a parked bike, and his own Rothko-ish artworks.
Eno, now 68, could not look more different from the louche glamour-puss of the early 70s. As his music became more pared down, so did he. The head was shaved, the makeup washed off and the feather boa dispensed with. Nowadays, he looks like a stylish academic.
His assistant asks me to join Eno athis table. Ill just be 40 seconds, finishing off my lunch, Eno says. He takes a mouthful of fruit salad. Just 30seconds now. There has always been something fastidious about him. His interviews tend to be 45 minutes long precisely. One journalist said that Eno had interrupted their chat to play him an Elvis Presley record that lasted two minutes and seven seconds, and then added two minutes and seven seconds to the interview sothe journalist wouldnt be shortchanged. At the same time, Eno loves to embrace the random. As a producer, he encourages artists to pick up Oblique Strategies cards to alter the path they are taking. Itell him I have brought a pack with me in case we find ourselves struggling. He smiles, flashing a gold tooth. That will be just the job, I should think, he says.

Eno talks slowly, calmly, eloquently. He would be brilliant on Just a Minute no repetition, hesitation or deviation. His voice is as soothing as his ambient music. He was christened Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno. You might assume he was an aristocrat, but his father and grandfather were postmen. And my great grandad actually, he says enthusiastically when I mention it. And my two uncles.
Did he ever think that was his destiny? Well, I did go into communications, didnt I? He laughs. Youre a sonic postman? Yeah! I help people communicate with each other in one way or another. When I was in my mid-30s, and my mother and father were living in a house I had bought for them with the proceeds of my music, my mum said: Dad and I were talking. Do you think youll ever settle down and get a job? Hahahhaha! She said: You could get a job in the Post Office. In the office! You know, not trudging delivering mail.
Eno decided he didnt want a regular job when he saw the effect it had on his father. He did shift work. It was a three-week cycle, mornings, afternoons and nights. I realised years later he was in a permanent state of jet lag because his eight-hour work day was shifting every week. I remember him coming home from work and sitting at the table; my mother had just put the food down and he fell forward, asleep. I thought even if I have to turn to crime, I wont get a job; the horror of being that exhausted and doing your work just to keep things going; the lack of freedom inyour life.
His Belgian mother had spent the war in Germany building planes in a labour camp. Eventually she returned to Belgium at the end of the war. It took her three months to get back. She arrived in Dendermonde near Brussels weighing five stone.
He has been talking quietly and beautifully about his parents. So it comes as a shock when I ask where his string of first names comes from, and he explodes. God, are we going to do any interesting questions? This is all bollocks. I mean Im not fucking interested at all in me. I want to talk about ideas. Can we do any of that?
He picks up one of the Oblique Strategy cards, and bursts out laughing. He shows it to the two women in the studio. Hahaha! How about that? Hahahaha! Take a break!
Take a break, they echo. Hahaha!
Arent they brilliant? Eno says. Fancy that.
The more they laugh, the smaller Ifeel.
Shaping the future: Enos Oblique Strategies cards. Photograph: Brian Eno
Eno says he hates talking about himself. Im not interested in that personality aspect of being an artist. Its all based on the idea that artists are automatically interesting people. I can tell you they arent. Their art might be very interesting, but as people they are no more or less interesting than anybody else. And Im really not at all interested in talking about Brian Eno. His ideas, however, I think have something to recommend them.
So what is Brian Eno working on at the moment, I ask. Im interested in the idea of generative music as a sort of model for how society or politics could work. Im working out the ideas Im interested in, about how you make aworking society rather than a dysfunctional one like the one we live in at the moment by trying to make music in a new way. Im trying to see what kinds of models and and structures make the music I want to hear, and then Im finding its not a bad idea to try to think about making societies in that way.
Could he be more specific? Yes. If you think of the classical picture of how things were organised in an orchestra where you have the composer, conductor, leader of the orchestra, section principals, section sub principals, rank and file the flow of information is always downwards. The guy at the bottom doesnt get to talk to that guy at the top. Almost none of us now would think that hierarchic model of social organisation, the pyramid, is agood way to arrange things.
In other words, he says, society should be built on the more egalitarian model of a folk or rock band, who just get together and do their thing, rather than a classical orchestra. Cant you see, he says with the passion of a visionary, if you transpose that argument into social terms, its the argument between the top down and bottom up? It is possible to have a society that doesnt have pre-existing rules and structures. And you can use the social structures of bands, theatre groups, dance groups, all the things we now call culture. You can say: Well, it works here. Why shouldnt it work elsewhere?
He has called himself an optimist. In the past. I ask him if he still is, post-2016. Yes, he says, there is a positive way to look at it. Most people I know felt that 2016 was the beginning of a long decline with Brexit, then Trump and all these nationalist movements in Europe. It looked like things were going to get worse and worse. I said: Well, what about thinking about it in a different way? Actually, its the end of a long decline. Weve been in decline for about 40 years since Thatcher and Reagan and the Ayn Rand infection spread through the political class, and perhaps weve bottomed out. My feeling about Brexit was not anger at anybody else, it was anger at myself for not realising what was going on. I thought that all those Ukip people and those National Fronty people were in a little bubble. Then I thought: Fuck, it was us, we were in the bubble, we didnt notice it. There was a revolution brewing and we didnt spot it because we didnt make it. We expected we were going to be therevolution.
He draws me a little diagram to explain how society has changed productivity and real wages rising in tandem till 1975, then productivity continuing to rise while real wages fell. It is easily summarised in that Joseph Stiglitz graph. The trouble now, he says, is the extremes of wealth and poverty. You have 62 people worth the amount the bottom three and a half billion people are worth. Sixty-two people! You could put them all in one bloody bus then crash it! He grins. Dont say that bit. (Since we meet, Oxfam publish a report suggesting that only eight men own as much wealth as the poorest 3.6 billion people in the world half the worlds population.)
Eno himself is a multimillionaire, largely because of his work as a producer. He wouldnt be one of the 62, would he, I ask. I certainly wouldnt be, he says with a thin smile. No, Im a long way off that.
He is still thinking about the political fallout of the past year. Actually, in retrospect, Ive started to think Im pleased about Trump and Im pleased about Brexit because it gives us a kick up the arse and we needed it because we werent going to change anything. Just imagine if Hillary Clinton had won and wed been business as usual, the whole structure shed inherited, the whole Clinton family myth. I dont know thats a future I would particularly want. It just seems that was grinding slowly to a halt, whereas now, with Trump, theres a chance of a proper crash, and a chance to really rethink.
Reflection is his 26th solo album, and his first ambient release in five years. Does he think there is a particular need for its soothing qualities at the moment? Well, I think this is quite a good time for it, he says.
I am not sure I get ambient its pleasant but dull; nice to have on in thebackground while you are working. Thats exactly what I want it for myself, he says, delighted. I do a lot of writing, and one of the ways I have of writing is by starting to make a piece of music of that kind and then, while Im carrying on writing, Im thinking: Theres a bit too much of that and not enough of this. So I go in and fiddle around with ita bit. I keep adjusting the music until its helping the writing, and then I adjust it less and less.
I had read that he initially made ambient music to help him when travelling, because he was frightened of flying; that it was supposed to be a kind of audio Mogadon. No, not Mogadon. One of the things you can get from music is surrender. From a lot of art, what youre saying is: Let it happen to me. Im going to let myself be out of control. Im going to let something else take over me. And thats what he wants to happen with this music.
That desire to surrender is interesting because, in many ways, he seems so controlled. I mention the interview with the Elvis song. Well, thats fair, isnt it? Its controlled but not controlling. You asked me whether Im controlling. Thats different to whether Im controlled. I think controlling would be if I said to the interviewer: Im taking some time out of the interview to play you something, but fuck you, Im in control here, so piss off. I didnt say that. I said Im taking some time out of the interview to play you something, but since you didnt request that, Im not expecting you to lose that time. Of course, I work in a role that could be seen as a controlling role as a producer. But, in fact, Im not that kind of producer. What I want to do is make situations where were all slightly at sea because people make their best work when they are alert, and alertness comes at the moment when you feel youre on the edge of being out of control. Youre not alert when youre settled and you know exactly what youre doing.
Ah, the collaborations. Much as Iadmire Eno the thinker and activist, like most of his fans it is Eno the collaborator/producer I love. And this is what I have really been looking forward to talking about. Like many middle-aged pop enthusiasts, I owe a huge debt to Eno. He has shaped so much of my favourite music from the first two Roxy Music albums, to Bowies Berlin trilogy and Talking Heads Remain in Light. Just as fascinating is his ability to mentor the more obviously commercial Coldplay and U2.

Who has he enjoyed working with most? Pause. Probably Brian Eno! Hehehe! I keep returning to him. No, really, I say, which collaborations does he look back on with most satisfaction? Idont look back much, to be honest. Whenever I look back at music, I think how I could have done it better.
Is there nothing that makes him think, God, I love that? Well, I suppose every collaboration continued because I liked doing it. Some of them are funnier than others
Which ones? Erm Uch. I dont want to talk about this. I so dont want to talk about this. And again, an explosion. Look, weve got a few minutes left. Lets talk about something good.
Thats controlling, I say.
Its not controlling. Its just fucking boring. I have to keep myself awake. Im tired.
I dont understand, I say I dont even know what is so fucking boring that you are refusing to talk about.
I just dont want to talk about history. All that shit! You can find all this in other interviews Ive done. Ivebeen 40 years talking about other people Ive worked with. No, sorry. Imjust not interested.
Doesnt he think the idea that the interview should be entirely about the present and what he may do in the future is a bit unreasonable?
But you can do research, he says. And calm, measured Eno has turned into irascible Eno. Thats your job! Research! You can look through thousands of interviews Ive done where Ive talked about all of this. Thats your job! You get paid for it. I dont get paid for this, by the way!
I get paid to ask people questions, Isay.
OK, well, youve asked me and Ive said I dont want to answer them. Thats a fair deal, isnt it? I know what you were after, he says, and I dont want to go there. I dont want to go intoa historical gloss on my career because that is not where my thoughts are right now. Im thinking about something as were talking that were not talking about and I dont want to lose it.
What is he thinking about? That piece of music Im working on in there which I have been playing today and making changes to in between interviews.
Was he thinking that I was asking about Bowie?
I know you were.
Well, I kind of was and wasnt.
Well, you kind of were, he mocks.
No, I say, I was thinking of any number of the great collaborations, including Bowie.
Im not interested in talking about any of them. And I think it would be considerate of you to say: He doesnt want to talk about that, so there are plenty of other things he could talk about; hes quite an interesting guy. Then he tells me exactly how Im trying to trap him. I could ask him a million other questions, but I know because this would make a headline, so Im going to fucking ask him about that.
I think thats unfair, I say.
All right, sorry, that is unfair, Eno says.
Weve spent most of the time talking about politics.
Only because I asked you to, he replies sullenly.
OK, were going to have to have to wrap this up now, the publicist says.
I dont want to wrap it up on a badvibe, Eno says, talking fast and breathing heavily.
But weve ground to a halt. Im not sure that even his Oblique Strategies could help us now.
Im sorry, he says. Im very tired today because I didnt sleep last night. And I knew I was going to be ratty, so Im sorry about that. But I really dont want to spend the rest of my life Im now 68, so I might have another 15 to 20 years left talking about my history. So, given the little time Ive got left on this planet, I would really love to focus on some of the new things Im doing.
What new stuff have we not talked about that he would like to talk about, Iask. Silence. I point to the serene orange lightbox image in front of us, and ask if thats a recent piece of work. Yes, thats one of my new pieces. Yes, this is stuff Ive been doing for hospitals, he says. I was invited to make some of these for rooms where people are spending a long time in stressful situations. With that he calls the interview to an end.
Reflection is out now on Warp.
