so i’ve been thinking about Willem’s actual goals with ascension and insight. theres a note you can find in the lecture hall that says “Master Willem was right. Evolution without courage will be the ruin of our race.” This sort of reads as Willem having the ‘courage’ to take the leaps needed for ascension, most likely experimentation, which makes sense considering the Garden of Eyes enemies you encounter outside of Byrgenwerth. But the way it’s written is confusing; if anything the Healing Church, Laurence, and even Micolash were the ones who had the ‘courage’ to do what was needed to ascend (more experimentation, abandoning Byrgenwerth for their own institutions, etc.). And also, who would have written this? Out of the main school of thought within Bloodborne Willem was definitely the most careful regarding what needed to be done for evolution.

So then I looked into the LastProtagonist retranslations of the original Japanese text, to which the note instead read:

ウィレーム先生は正しい。情けない進化は人の堕落だ

“Professor Willem is right. (The) wretched evolution is man's downfall.”

That adds a completely new context. The ‘wretched evolution’ mentioned in the text could be interpreted as his fear of the Old Blood that Laurence believed in, and the transformation of men into beasts is what is destroying Yharnam. But here me out, okay:

Ascension to me exists on a sort of spectrum, and adding more insight or blood furthers your transformation from just being able to perceive the truth around you to a genuine metamorphosis into an entirely new being. I think Willem was fervently against the extreme side of ascension, and instead wanted to just perceive the Great Ones as they were. Insight is tied to being able to see and understand concepts and beings larger than you, and before you bring in the concept of insight being used for a physical transformation it makes sense that “lining the brain with eyes” would primarily involve increased perception. Willem never wanted to be a Great One, rather he just wanted to understand them in a way his mind could understand.

The schism between him and Laurence was not because of differing paths to ascension, but fear of evolution as a whole. Laurence flies too close to the sun and thinks he can become a god, rather than just a general difference in theory thar could’ve worked hand in hand.

I think this also adds an interesting new perspective to Willem’s adage. "We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open." It's interesting how directly blood is associated to humanity in this, and so I think it's Willem’s way of reminded laurence that our blood is what makes ur human and gives us or humanity, and coveting god blood and injecting goes completely against the laws of nature. As for "our eyes are yet to open", i think it old either be read as Willem saying that humans are not ready to ascend and our hubris blinds us from that fact, or even better that humans are not made to ascend bc we live on the basest of planes, that is our place in the universe. The most we can do is at last perceive the mysteries around us, not able to grasp it but isnt it enough to just know what these things are? Yknow?

This would also mean that Micolash’s school of thought aka using insight to complete a physical transformation would make it a sort of hybrid of Willem and Laurence’s theories. He believes in the use of insight, but also in a more hands-on approach to reaching godhood via experimentation that Laurence was more inclined towards, and would’ve even partaken in since he was apart of the Choir at some point in time.

Yeah, the whole thing on bio kids and adopted kids and the approach towards legacy is really gross. Especially since it obvious that DC is trying to have their cake and eat it too. All those stories about found family with adopted kids gets thrown out the window the instant a bio kid shows up. Cass can't be Batman because that's reserved for Damian, Chris Kent is removed as Superman's son and becomes evil when he shows up again, etc.

It's especially weird with Damian in my opinion. because i feel like sometimes DC really markets him as the heir and bruces "real" son but also they keep behind the scenes trying to make him evil or just doing the weirdest shit imaginable there. Then there is shit like DCeased that make him Batman that are awful and also ship him with cassie sandsmark. this whole "bio kid problem" started with Damian yeah but with the Damian story it had something to say. When Damian(10 and traumatized) kept trying to prove himself as the real son the point was that he was wrong. and his journey in healing and stuff made him into a healthier person and also made him not want to be batman. I think DC really saw damian and was like oh man we should do a bio legacy character(completely ignoring any of the damian nuance) and made Jon Kent which... yeah. I'm not super into a lot of the superfam fandom but of my mutuals/pals that are I've seen that a lot of them don't like the lasting affect Jon has had on the superfam( and also HATE the erasure of Chris Kent)

This mixed with the now revealed Trinity leads to my main problem which is DC's marketing of these characters. With playing into them inheriting their parents legacies, and centering them as succesors ignoring like... everybody else.

Ok so sin #1 - Until i got highkey invested in Cyrus i didnt really get paladins- I've definitely not enjoyed playing them before in dnd, so its been soooooo much fun trying to explore the implications in bg3! SO with me not getting the paladin thing, i was thinking of a bard multiclass more for the narrative potential- someone growing beyond their oath and being ok with it. Something something, the fighter becomes a supporter and realises they are more than a knight in shining armour. (Not that Daeris sees himself as a knight per say but this was what I was building off!!)

ANYWAY. for Daeris this is super on the tables, especially after Alfira!!! if its ok its time for MEGA rambles but the situation made me feel things.

Daeris lets Alfira join camp happily, knowing he cannot shepherd all the tieflings to Baldur's Gate, but this sweet girl who bared her heart and made it into song, while sharing a new skill with Daeris but a day earlier? he could make room for one more.

only hours later she's dead on the floor, pooling with blood, in a ritualistic killing of pure brutality, and his hands are stained with her blood. His only memory he could conjure up being how scared she was.

He washes his hands first,scrubbing his skin raw trying to think of how this happened. He barely sleeps, her fear haunting him, but that's not the only thing. His oath, holding fast despite the depravity, but Ilmater's prayers have gone quiet. There is no guidance, with his oath feeling hollow as it still holds. She wasn't who he was hunting, she wasn't the face of his vengeance. So why does the divine still course through?

He confesses to the killing, before swiftly making an effort to give her a send off, a burial with the hopes that any of his divine powers will help her journey. The scrutiny of his companions only making his holy oath feel more fraudulent.

Daeris finally remembers the song Alfira was writing, in memory of Lihala. He remembers how the spare lute played effortlessly in his hands, despite having no recollection of ever holding a lute before. He thinks it to be a coincidence, but then a stray thought... why not, alongside a burial, give the charming young bard a proper bardic remembrance through song? It's the least she deserves. Anything to replace the fear she felt as the lasting memory in his head.

And so, with his faith in his oath beginning to wobble and a lute, Daeris begins to write a song, forcing himself to remember her as purely as he can. to his surprise, it comes as easily as the urge to kill, and feels just as holy as suffering should.

top 10 funniest mental illness bits in my life is getting into arguments with my therapist repeatedly over not getting a diagnosis for something debilitating me and then going to college and taking an online test (with her encouragement, and on a zoom call WITH HER talking over every question and its accuracy to the condition etc) that says You kind of have this condition. and she was like yeah you might have tendencies. and despite literally insulting her over this very topic before i just go Oh okay that makes sense ^_^ and then i no longer believe i have these tendencies at all. girl WHAT ?

he scoffed, slamming his palms on the table as he dramatically stomped away. “he should win an award with all that drama.” you sneered, eyes practically rolling into the bag of your head.

Luke snorted from beside you, hiding an amused smirk with his chewing as he gave you a look, eyebrows raised. “what!” you yelled, a smile taking over your features again.

he shrugged, failing to hide his laughter as you playfully shoved him, your own laughter following suit. “nothing, nothing!”

you laughed, eyes brightening with fiery joy. “why are you laughing at me, Luke?” he smiled, eyes tightly scrunching as he scooted himself closer to you, erupting warmth throughout the both of you.

“it’s just funny,” he reasoned, suddenly breaking your eye contact to stare at his empty, devoured plate.

your eyebrow raised, interest peaked as you shoved him again, his head instantly turning back to you. “what is?”

“your attitude.” he quipped, very, very slight fear etched in his words.

“my attitude?”

“yes your attitude. like- you’re so sassy to everyone.”

you scoffed, eyes scrunching up. “well, everyone but you.”

Luke thought for a second, realization crossing over his face. “yeah. everyone but me. why?” he asked, smirk returning and eyebrows raising in anticipation.

“because I like you.” you answered, voice strong despite your weary insides, hoping Luke would fail to understand what you were truly saying.

he softly chuckled, his sweet smirk reappearing. “yeah, cus’ i’m special.”

you snorted, “yeah, you really are special.”

Luke scoffed in offense, and now it was his turn to shove you, dramatically crossing his arms at your words.

“whatever, Sparks. you’re just a hater.”

you laughed, dragging your body closer to his as the two of you continued firing snarky remarks back and forth.

neither of you seemed to notice or care about the stares from the campers around you.

it was unlikely that anyone would understand your unexplained softness towards the hermes boy. they just didn’t understand you like he did.

emmy imagine doing a fit check for suna on your lunch break or something and he’s just hyping you up the whole time (in his own way) while he’s on break from practice 😕🫶🏻

(inspired by me doing a fit check like literally rn while I wait for my friend to show up LOL)

IM GONNA LIGHT MYSELF ON FIRE-

You just prop your phone on the bureau, fix your hair a little bit and press the FaceTime button, smoothing your shirt and taking a deep breath in. The phone rings a few times, and you chew on your lip, fiddle with your fingers, suddenly very shy about showing your boyfriend your outfit, and-

“WHOOOOOO!” A loud cheer echos through the room, and you giggle and cover your face. “That’s my baby! WOOF! Hell yeah dawg! Gimme a twirl. C’mon. Spin for me, doll.”

You do, and he winces dramatically, “ah! My heart! Give it back!”

“Rinnie!” You snort, beaming happily at him. “You really love it?”

“Love it? Baby-“ he leans towards the microphone, “I’m being tame right now because Washio is right next to me.” He turns the camera slightly to show just a frame of Washio, who’s pinching his eyes.

“Thank you,” a gruff voice answers over the line.

“Hi, washio!”

“Yeah. Hey.”

Rintaro turns the camera back to him, “alright you looked to long, my turn again.” He smirks as you kick your shoe up to show him, and he licks his lips slightly, “you look really good, baby. Wanna give that big forehead a kiss.”

“MY FOREHEAD? Have you seen yours!” You scoff.

He rolls his eyes, “this isn’t about me. Go have fun with your friends before you ruin the mood.”

“Okay, stink,” you hum, grabbing the camera. “I love you so much.”

“Love you more, smelly.” He brings the camera to his lips for a dramatic kiss, and you roll your eyes as you place a small peck to the camera. “That was hot.”

“Sure was, rinnie.”
