Hey, all! Sorry for ghosting you guys for just over two years now. We likely aren’t coming back long-term, but I’m in a spot of trouble and need some help.
The TDLR of this is Ruby had some extremely bad side effects from a pain medication, causing her to become extremely dehydrated and lose a good amount of blood. I had to rush her to the ER vet and the bill this time is too much for me to handle. I need to raise at least 3k. If you want to help us out, I made a
  gofundme.
I will reblog this with added details & a bit of a catch-up.

We are in Bryan Texas for the 2023 ASCA Nationals!
It's hot and humid but is supposed to get cold on Monday. Aayla got taken off Carprofen two days ago and is her normal self, no signs of pain! So we are going forward with the obedience and rally trial tomorrow and seeing where we go from there.
She has assimilated well into my friend's group of dogs. (five others, with minimal issues).
Take a peep at Aspen this blue merle, who holds the record for the most amount of OTCHs with ASCA. (He has OTCH13!!! He also has an AKC OTCH and an ASCA ATCH)

Methotrexate Update
Doctor got back to me about my labs. My absolute monocytes are high but she isn’t concerned. She didn’t explain why (my best guess it’s bc my exercise has increased so drastically in such a short amount of time but idk) She says I can stay at the same dose and she doesn’t need another lab for three months. I have been doing GREAT on it. Hardly any negative side effects.
The stomach pain I’ve had every night for a year is gone.
My post-exercise chest pain that I’ve been going to cardiologist and ER for since Oct 2022 is completely gone (playing and shoveling snow 100% would have set that off)
TMI // My period has been freaking purple since Sept 2022 and I’ve been bleeding so much that the OBGYN thought I had a fibroid rupture. Well I just had my first period on Methotrexate and it’s all back to normal now and the amount was 1/3 what it has been which is a huge relief. It still hurt but I was able to eat and drink which I usually struggle with for the first few days. Maybe the pain will get better over time.
My gums don’t bleed any more when flossing. It just stopped as soon as I started methotrexate.
I’m able to eat and drink a lot more than I was which is great.
I have way more range of motion in my joints (which is making me have more problems with my hypermobility but whatev)
I still have muscle and joint pain but I honestly think most of it is bc I’ve been able to do so much more. I was taking 600 mg ibuprofen 2-3 times a day and my pain was still 7-7.5/10 and now I’m not taking any ibuprofen except maybe once every couple days and it’s a solid 6-6.5/10
Oh and I can take deeper breaths. Like I’m still having low oxygen show up on my oxymeter but for most of my life my ribs have felt like I’m wearing a corset and they can’t expand when I breath in and that has improved so much that I just walk around the house thinking “wow. I can take a breath. Wow” I’m not sure if this is due to my joints and ribs having more range of motion or if it’s connected to the hyperinflation of my lungs that showed up on the X-ray. Idk but it’s awesome and I’m making an appointment with pulmonologist again to double check lung stuff
The only con I’m currently having is the high absolute monocytes which my dr says is fine and I’ve been having really bad night sweats (actually I’m sweating a ton all the time) but I think my body is just like…recalibrating. Usually effects are really seen after a few months so I’m super excited for 2024!
Mandana’s Health Update
Surprise surprise the new vet doesn’t want to prescribe LDN/s
I get why. There are no studies on using LDN for pain in dogs (there are a few cancer studies in dogs which include LDN for pain relief and QOL but whatev) I humored her and tried to use Carprofen but Mandana doesn’t do well on pain meds and always gets an upset stomach after a couple days. This time was no different and she was miserable and vomiting so I took her off it. We discussed all of our options which I’ll list now for reference:
Decrease carprofen from 75mg twice a day to 75mg once a day // not gonna work bc the original dose wasn’t even very effective for managing her pain and I imagine if she’s already having problems with NSAIDs then taking even a small dose every day for years will hurt her.
Try a different NSAID called Meloxicam // we expect the same problem we have with carprofen
Try a different type of pain relief called Amantadine // Used along side NSAIDs (which we can’t do) so not very effective on its own and can have a side effect of urine retention which Mandana is prone to (she gets this as a “rare” side effect of both apoquel and Benadryl so I would rather not risk it, esp since Proin gave her high blood pressure and we had to discontinue it so there would be no back up if she got incontinence again)
Try the new type of pain relief that was just approved in the US called Librela // This is what we’re going to do next. She has an appointment for her first injection 1.5 weeks from now.
Consult with a Neurologist and get an MRI // After we get her back pain approved by our PetsBest insurance we will make an appointment for a neurologist consult and MRI. The two X-rays we have are 9 months apart and show a narrowing of the disc space between L4-5 but the general consensus is that it shouldn’t be causing as much pain as she is in so an MRI will give us a better idea of what’s going on and the Neurologist might have more treatment options for us.
We really want to wrap up some of these big health concerns for both of us before 🐾2025🐾👀 and we are already making a lot of progress so I’m super hopeful!

18 April 2023
Ivan and I checked out a park here in our new home town. I was a little worried about off-leash dogs here but everyone I saw on the trail was super polite and moved off-trail or leashed their dog while we were passing each other; Ivan and I did the same when we saw a man running toward us on the trail with his bully mix. Trails are starting to green up with more leaves and flowers. I feel so impatient this year waiting for the leaf canopy to return. Every year by the end of the Winter it's like I've forgotten what a forest looks like when it's completely alive-- all the ferns and tree leaves and little plants in the undergrowth. Ivan is still hanging in with about 45-60 minutes being his max on walks before he starts limping on his right shoulder. He definitely looks a lot better since starting Carprofen/Welactin/Dasuquin.

2nd plea for SANDLOT in Baltimore City, MD:
Handsome hunk of a 97b German Shepherd is smart, obedient, and has done well with other dogs - BARCS, Baltimore MD
- Handsome Hunk in Need -
Sandlot- 3 years, altered male, 97lbs
3-year-old Sandlot might be the biggest hunk at the shelter currently!
This large boy is super strong, but only typically pulls when he wants to say "hi" to other dog; otherwise, he's a fairly easy walk. He's a nice fella, obedient and eager to please, especially when treats are involved, and he has a reliable sit and takes treats gently. Like most dogs, Sandlot enjoys being told what a good boy he is and getting lots of praise.
When tested off-leash in the shelter's play yard, Sandlot was somewhat tense/intense when greeting other dogs, but was overall pretty tolerant and enjoyed chasing. The person who found him as a stray also noted that he did well with their resident dog and seemed interested in playing.
Upon examination, Sandlot appeared generally pretty healthy, but did have some diarrhea, so was started on dewormers and probiotics. He was also recently neutered, so is currently on Carprofen for pain management post-op. A full medical summary can be provided upon request.
Unfortunately, Sandlot is quite stressed in his kennel (pacing, barking, and jumping up and down). Our vets and behavior team decided to start him on trazodone and gabapentin to help for the time being that he's still in the shelter, but what Sandlot really needs is to get into a home.
Sandlot is available immediately for rescue pick-up.
Please let us know if your organization can help!
Thank you,
The BARCS Rescue Team

Bubblebean health update:
Vet Appointment
- she's getting blood tests to make sure she can remain on her arthritis pain meds + apoquel
- i'm still uncertain if apoquel helps her, but it doesn't hurt and i have no idea where to go from there
- on the bright side, carprofen does help her move with less stiffness. It's not a miracle worker, but i'm glad it helps!
- she yelled 2-3 times when pooping, which is odd since she got her anal glands expressed recently, but luckily, they had enough time to do that, so hopefully they can help her!

Fic Update (PLEASE READ)
Hey guys, this is going to be kinda long and rambled so I'll put it under a cut. I would really like if you read through it for a bit of a life update. Also you can meet one of my dogs.
I am still working on Dona Nobis Pacem, I promise you that. However, some things have been progressing in my life that has DNP on the back burner.
I have a pack of dogs, as I am a working dog handler/hobby dog trainer and have worked in the veterinary industry a bit due to this. One of my personal dogs, Brekker, has developed a leg issue. This is going to kind of go deep into it and the veterinary issues if anyone is interest. If not, feel free to skip over it.
In early September, Brekker landing weird during disc comp practice and injured his back right leg. He wouldn't put any weight on it, but being a Belgian Malinois, he doesn't really show pain so it was hard to gauge the severity of it. I ended and brought him home, making sure to give him some carprofen and watched any further issues.
After about three days, I made a vet appointment. Physical exam came back inconclusive so we continued to monitor and planned to take x-rays after the weekend if it still didn't get better. Our fear was a possible ACL/CCL tear due to him landing, or an issue with his hip. We ended up running the x-rays (since we had planned on getting them done anyways) and found nothing abnormal in the hips/knees.
I made a follow up appointment when his hock joint began swelling and becoming more tender. That's when we found a bone lesion in his hock joint. Every dog owner's worst fear came to light: cancer. Not just any cancer, but an extremely aggressive, usually fatal cancer called osteosarcoma. However, this was odd placement and we wanted to keep running tests.
The problem with osteosarcoma is it's very aggressive. Once you find it, you usually have about six months left without treatment. It metastasizes very quickly in the lungs and there's nothing that can be done. There are currently vaccine trials being conducted alongside chemotherapy patients that are showing some good results, so I immediately reached out to them.
From there, we did a bone biopsy to rule out tumorous tissue because we still had another option. A rare fungal or bacterial infection called osteomyelitis, caused when a bone fractures and gets infected. This usually leads to septic joints and bone lesions that look like osteosarcomas, but are in a different location. While the biopsy came back negative on tumor cells, it was still inconclusive with the infectious results. We also did a bone tap with was inconclusive due to contamination with a blood vessel.
Now that I am $7k in the hole with him, I'm moving to an orthopedic and surgical specialist team that will be rerunning all these tests (and I will have to continue paying for) to see if we can get a positive for the infection. Then we treat with steroids and antibiotics/antifungals.
We still have more tests top run (like a blasto urine EIA to overrule the blood fungal panel) and more meds to add on so we're a bit stressed over here.
Anyways, thank you for reading through the ramble. I am working bit by bit to get chapter six out for you guys. Here is a picture of Mr. Brekker so you can see the baby we are working hard to treat.

I took that accursed veterinary pharmaceutical exam again:
General Knowledge Test: 11/11 Practical Application Test: 10/10 Written Test: 14/15
Verdict: PASSED yeeeeaaaah who knows all about the effects of sunlight on furosemide, how many times a day to give cefpodoxime, why you shouldn't handle incurin without gloves, the average mg/kg dosage of carprofen for an adult dog, the generic names for all of the OTC antacids, why fluralaner shouldn't be given to animals with a history of seizures and and why prednisone will definitely kill your cat?
ME.
Also levetiracetam is the worst drug name to have to spell.

Sending this to everyone who reblogged that post from jackamazinglynn: it is a scam.
Paypal account linked (Jacklyn Webb) does this regularly, creating new blogs soliciting donations for a new sick cat each time.
That tumour, as one of my followers pointed out, is on a dog.
The veterinary invoice is for an animal called Chanel, not Zoe, though that's not as suspicious as the list of medication doses for an animal in the 40-60lb (18-27kg) range, i.e. a medium sized dog.
List also includes canine medications generally not considered suitable for cats (Carprofen).
aw shit, thanks for letting me know. i wish trusting people on here was easy to do, but people like this ruin it for everyone else. i appreciate u 💖

So as time draws closer to nationals I learn more new things that change how I want things to go.
With ASCA you can enter a higher level than your dog is at if you want and gain Qs for their lower level titles for agility. For example Aayla has not done regular with ASCA but I entered her in Open instead of novice because she has an excellent title with AKC and is rather good at agility.
Now I just learned that at nationals there is an ACE Senior HIT award. But the dog must be in the same level of all three classes. Aayla is in elite for gamblers and jumpers, which means she would have to be in elite for regular. Which she can handle the courses and it would mean that it would spread out agility more.
Instead of running four agility classes and an utility class on one day, she would do two agility classes and rally Masters one day, two agility classes and utility day 2 and two agility classes day three. I was already contemplating scratching an agility class or two when it was four agility classes and utility just because that's a lot. Yet if I could spread it out that would be nicer and makes her eligible for HIT. (I know there are going to probably be faster dogs, BUT Aayla has a high Q rate and is fast! I think she has a chance!)
But at the same time I wonder if running agility before utility the following day is a good idea...the utility class is more important than the agility at this point in her career.
Then again this is all dependant on how she feels and if her leg is fine.
Today we finally have her back to her normal! No stiffness or limping this morning! So there is hope that she is recovered! Still going to rest her and keep her on carprofen for a few more days.

Ah fuck, maybe they got me. Normally I never interact with posts asking for money, but this one messaged me specifically so I looked into it. They had a populated blog so it seemed to not be a fake account, I didn't look further :( if it helps reassure you, I have very few followers, like 20
Sorry to anyone who interacted with it from me

A health update for Sophie:
She’s finally kicked her upper respiratory infection I think. Still snoring a bit but energy is back up and breathing is normal when she’s awake.
She went to the vet yesterday due to a new mass on her lip and weird pussy bumps in her ear. She also messed in the house so I had them run her urine just in case. She’s been drinking a ton of water lately and her urine was really dilute so we did a blood panel as well. She also has been weird about eating her breakfast which is not her norm either.
The good news is that the vet doesn’t think anything is really too wrong with her! The mass on her lip is in the same place of some inflammation on the other side so her vet said she thinks anything malignant is unlikely to be that symmetrical. She chalked the lip and her ear stuff up to inflammation acting ~weird~ and I got some topical stuff for her ears. Blood was all normal with no indications of kidney disease or anything else. She also started us on gabapentin to see if that helps Sophie’s mobility more than just the carprofen.
I was able to get Sophie to eat 2/3 of her breakfast today so fingers crossed we can get back onto her painkiller schedule and it’s uphill from there. Don’t let your dogs grow old folks it’s expensive.
