Deconstructing the "Peggy and Molly Friendship" Narrative
Molly the Australian Magpie had been “reunited” with Peggy and the family that stole him as a fledgling and raised him without any wildlife carer license or experience.
Thanks to the Queensland Premier wanting to score some extra points in an election year, he “made it happen.” And legitimised the collective delusion of the public that genuinely thinks that this was a completely okay and reasonable situation. And believed the notion that Molly, a territorial social species of bird that had compromised development and was taken out of his home range, could simply "fly away".
So I went through their Instagram to see how this madness unfolded. It clearly began as a “Peggy” instagram before the stolen fledgling joined in.
These people are so adamant that there were no parents around but I don’t believe it for a second. Molly was a juvenile when he was taken - you always see fledglings around his size and age on the ground foraging for food. Mum and dad are not always around but they are never far away and are critical to a young magpie's developmental period.
They claim that Molly was sick. Yet they never make any mention of taking him to the vet. Molly makes distinctive fledgling feeding calls, the sounds he would have used to beg for food from his parents. It's tragic to see this after seeing how magpies raise their fledglings in my own backyard.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of their first posts is feeding him what looks to be mealworms next to their pet dog. Aussie Magpie Fledglings at this age are learning everything about how to survive from their parents. They fed Molly WITH their dog. What does that teach? That dogs are not only safe but also a potential source of food/reinforcement.
As Peggy’s Instagram becomes Peggy and Molly’s Instagram, this happens:
Tumblr media
Molly gets attacked by other birds. Because guess what? This is a territorial bird who has been removed from his original territory and away from the protection and guidance of his parents.
So, because these people have no idea what they’re doing, they’re Shocked that this would happen and that the wild bird they’re unwittingly conditioning into their pet can’t defend himself.
Tumblr media
But yeah I’m sure teaching Molly tug of war with a dog is exactly the survival skills he needs as a wild bird!!!!!!
(I’m losing my goddamn mind)
Tumblr media
Another “release attempt” fails because apparently we did a whoopsie and let him fly out in a storm??? Yet again, this poor bird is having traumatic experiences in the wild that he was not prepared for and is, unsurprisingly, seeking humans - which he has now associated heavily with food and safety.
Meanwhile, as they’re “raising” Molly, this insanity happens:
Tumblr media
Yeah because that’s why your staffy is spontaneously lactating. She wants to mother a bird. It couldn’t possibly be that she’s had a bird pecking at her nipples and stimulating them or that she might have a serious medical issue. Interestingly, they do take Peggy to the vet. A luxury that doesn’t seem to be afforded to Molly who was also apparently sick (even though he seems to be pretty bright, alert and feeding in all the videos of when he was “rescued”)
Anyway the saga continues with the clear intention of making content now - the socialisation and habituation continues during Molly’s most critical juvenile years. They talk about how Peggy is helping Molly learn how to find food as if they're still intended for him to be a wild bird. But it's clear this bird isn't going anywhere.
At this time, Molly would be learning how to find food, how to socialise with other magpies and he’d eventually be joining a juvenile or bachelor flock where he’d continue to develop his social skills as a social and intelligent bird, wrestling and playing with his flock mates.
But no, he’s learning to mimic barks and is harassing the hell out of this poor staffy. The family just lets it all happen without any sort of support or advocacy for Peggy.
Tumblr media
Haha isn't zoonotic disease vectors and a confused bird with no idea of how to interact appropriately with a dog just hilarious? It’s funny because of the silly caption they made, right?
As their "relationship" progresses, Peggy shows more discomfort.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This dog shows multiple stress behaviours. She is not friends with this bird she is TOLERATING this bird as he pecks at her face. She's rarely relaxed in these "play" interactions. She licks her lips, turns her head, yawns and even bares her teeth. But if it has a cute soundtrack behind it, I guess that means they’re having fun, right?
Even the interactions where Peggy's isn't stressed are still uncomfortable to watch. Molly shows immense frustration and confusion, following and wanting to be involved but being ignored or tolerated.
Molly should be with wild birds, playing how they play and not being merely tolerated:
Tumblr media
Molly had a chance to be homed with a qualified wildlife rehabber or even get the chance to get to live with other Australian Magpies. But because people fell for the story and the media regurgitated it without questioning it for a second - he'll never get that chance again.
Molly was failed by the Queensland government for not being seized immediately. There were numerous complaints as soon as their story started to become viral that this was sending a bad message to the public and that this bird was not being given the care he needed.
It's too late, now. Molly will live in a confused limbo, not knowing what he's supposed to be and will never get to live with his own species.
And all the people that sent death threats to wildlife carers (who were trying to fix the damage caused) will pat themselves on the back about what a good job they did.

How to Enhance Your Dog's Joint Health
Tumblr media
Arthritis refers to the inflammation of one or more joints. In a healthy joint capsule, cartilage protects bones where they meet by providing cushion, while synovial fluid acts as a lubricant to reduce friction when the bones glide against each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, after strenuous activity and repeated motion of the joints, or any trauma to the area, the cartilage and synovial fluid tends to thin over time, allowing the bones to rub against each other and cause pain. Inflammation and swelling builds within the joint capsule, leading to stiffness and issues with mobility. As the inflammation persists, certain chemicals and enzymes may be released that begin to further eat away at the cartilage and sometimes the bone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A snowball effect can tend to follow as a dog becomes less active or more reluctant to move due to arthritic pain, leading to weight gain and putting even more pressure on the joints. While arthritis can’t be cured and is almost inevitable with any active aging dog, there are many ways pet owners can try to prevent its progression, including over-the-counter joint supplements and healthy weight management through nutrition.
A recent study by NC State University reported that 40% of 123 healthy dogs between the ages of 8 months and 4 years had radiographic evidence of arthritis on at least one joint - and from that, 24% showed associated pain. More interestingly, 57% of those dogs who had exhibited any arthritis-associated pain had owners who claimed they were aware something was wrong with their pet, yet only 13% of them were receiving any form of pain management or joint support.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps this is due to a common misconception that arthritis is only a problem found in older dogs. Despite many senior pets suffering from arthritis, it is a degenerative - not age-related - disease. Other risk factors that may contribute to joint deterioration, including genetics, heavier body weight, activity level/exercise, neuter status, as well as diet. Arthritis may typically develop secondary to a musculoskeletal disorder - like hip or elbow dysplasia, or luxating patella - but may also be caused by trauma or infection.
Tumblr media
Symptoms of Arthritis:
Lameness or limping
Decreased activity
Inability or reluctance to jump
Stiffness
Difficult climbing stairs
Changes in behavior (less social)
Compulsive licking of the joint(s)
While these symptoms might seem like an obvious indicator of pain or discomfort, recall that not every dog may exhibit these signs. An x-ray, however, may confirm arthritis by displaying the presence swelling of tissue around the joint, increased fluid within the joint, or even changes to the bone such as thickening or spurs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
More advanced imaging like CT scan or MRI may help to diagnose an underlying cause of the arthritis by assessing the bone structure and surrounding tissues. A joint tap can also be used to assess the fluid if an infection or autoimmune disease is suspected.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today, there are many products available on the market that are geared towards supporting our dogs’ joints - many of which will claim to cure or even prevent arthritis altogether. On the contrary, most nutraceuticals will usually take several weeks to months before reaching therapeutic levels. Due to the lack of regulation on pet products, it can be easy for owners to fall for such marketing and have difficulty determining which product is best for their pets.
Here is a useful podcast that reviews tips on choosing quality pet supplements:
Vetfolio - “Advancing Gracefully with Joint Supplementation”
“Dr. Leilani Alvarez joins Vet Folio Voice to explain the importance of using a canine joint supplement at any stage of life, when needed. She offers insight into the role of evidence-based ingredients, how they can work together to support hip and joint health, and why the quality seal from the National Animal Supplement Council (NASC) can signal the best products for your practice.”
Tumblr media
Aside from having an NASC seal on its label, it would be even more credible if the pet product company has been in business for at least 10 years - assuming the company has had great success and testimonials thus far, along with the financial stability and willingness to recall products voluntarily, if and when a fault was found.
Tumblr media
Another important to detail to look out for in determining the efficacy of a joint supplement is to see if the product has actually been tested on live animals with naturally-occurring arthritis (i.e. not induced arthritis, or on samples in a Petri dish). It is also worth considering if experiments were done on the same species as the one it is intended for use - just because a study showed efficacy on arthritis found in humans, may not mean it will have the same efficacy with dogs.
Effective Ingredients/Nutraceuticals:
Tumblr media
Fish oil - preferably sourced from wild-caught cold water fish - contains high concentrations of EPA/DHA, and is currently the nutraceutical with the most supporting evidence in literature towards managing canine arthritis. Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are major components of the anti-inflammatory process within the joint capsule. These polyunsaturated fatty acids are essential to dogs - they cannot be synthesized in the body, so must be provided in the diet. A 2010 study suggested that OFA supplementation may allow for reduction in NSAID use for treatment of osteoarthritis in dogs.
Tumblr media
Green lipped mussel is a shellfish from New Zealand that obtains its nutrients from phytoplankton minerals in sea water. It is another natural source for OFA - specifically eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA), which can’t be found in other common oily fish. Unlike EPA and DHA, ETA not only has anti-inflammatory properties, but has also been shown to block certain pathways for short-term pain.
Tumblr media
Egg shell membrane, normally a protective layer over a growing embryo, contains high levels of glucosamine, chondroitin, collagen, and hyaluronic acid. These are utilized to support connective tissue repair, helping to improve function muscular function and diminish soft tissue pain that may be a source of overcompensating for a joint injury.
Tumblr media
Boswellia serata, also known as “Indian frankincense” is a plant native to India, Africa, and the Arabian peninsula. In 2004, a group of dogs with confirmed joint disease in Switzerland received Boswellia extracts at a dose of 40mg/kg once daily for 6 weeks. After two weeks, 71% showed significant reduction in severity of lameness and stiff gaits - dogs had less difficulty while moving, as well as when getting up after a long rest.
Tumblr media
Astaxanthin is a red pigment that can be found in salmon and red marine algae. It is an antioxidant which protects cells from damage and inflammation, helping to boost overall immunity and energy. There have been previous studies which showed that astaxanthin contributes to restoration of bone homeostasis, showing potential for counteracting joint injuries.
Tumblr media
Vitamin D3 is important for supporting healthy bone structure, including the subchondral bone. Dogs cannot absorb Vitamin D3 from the sun the way humans do, so is typically absorbed from dietary sources.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, although extracted from the hemp plant, should not be confused with hemp oil. Further, it cannot legally cannot contain more than 0.3% THC, or otherwise make your dog high. Depending where you live, you may not even be able to find or purchase such products for your pet. Although it is still a very controversial ingredient in some areas, it may still work as an anti-inflammatory by interacting with pain receptors through the endocannabinoid system. A study done in 2018 showed that CBD oil administered at 2mg/kg twice daily can help reduce pain and increase activity in dogs with arthritis. However, owners should make sure to avoid purchasing CBD pet products that do not have the NASC seal - those that have not been stamped may contain heavy metals like lead or not be appropriately labeled to display its proper dose.
Dr. Sarah Wooten, veterinarian and certified canine rehabilitation and pain practitioner, reviews a few more commonly suggested ingredients for joint health in this article -
“Joint Supplements for Dogs: The Helpful vs. The Hype” https://www.dvm360.com/view/joint-supplements-dogs-helpful-vs-hype

Some dogs, unfortunately, may not be able to tolerate some of these supplements that add higher levels of fat to their diet (i.e. those prone to pancreatitis, or that have trouble with weight gain). Instead, they might benefit from a prescription diet that contains higher levels of OFA, yet still lower levels of fat within the complete formula.

Royal Canin Advanced Mobility
Hill’s j/d Joint Care
Hill’s j/d Mobility

Why Good Doggies Are Also Bad Doggies
(And What That Means For MyHouse.wad)
There are two dogs in MyHouse.wad. One's a sweet, harmless puppy, and the other's a relentless, deadly hellhound. Both of these dogs reside in what's commonly known as the Brutalist house, a vast concrete structure that shifts in size from small to large as you explore it.
The smaller dog, quite naturally, provides little in the way of an obstacle, and indeed its presence is surprisingly uplifting in such a bleak, sad game. It's the big, two-headed brute, the "Bad Doggy", that aims to prevent your progres; it's swift, deals a lot of damage, and takes a lot of firepower to subdue. It rules the space it resides in with an iron jaw, and will not take no for an answer. Your only options are to avoid it, or to kill it.
But there's a catch - kill the Bad Doggy, and the Good Doggy also dies. And while this does open up a loophole to allow you to deal with the Bad Doggy with no risk - killing the Good Doggy yourself - the fact remains that an innocent creature's life has to end for your journey to become easier.
Of course, you know this, and likely opted to "spare" the Bad Doggy so that the Good Doggy could join you on the beach at the end. And yes, the sight of our canine friend napping by the waves does help to complete the sense of a "good" ending - or at least, a "peaceful" one.
But... have you ever stopped to consider what this actually means? How, rather than being a throwaway device to make you feel sad, or a lazy reference to Tom's fear of dogs, this "Good Doggy"/"Bad Doggy" actually serves to reinforce the core message of MyHouse.wad?
Consider these dogs again... or rather, consider this dog. Singular.
There is one dog in MyHouse.wad. Sometimes it is a Good Doggy, playful and diligent and affirming to our wellbeing. Other times, it is a Bad Doggy, aggressive and domineering and striking fear into our hearts. Kill one, the other dies. You cannot separate the two. Where the Good Doggy goes, the Bad Doggy must inevitably follow.
How do you stop a Bad Doggy from being a Bad Doggy? You can't, not entirely. A Bad Doggy is bad only in the context of its owner's view of it. A doggy that shreds the furniture, is overly-aggressive in its interactions with its owners, jealously guards spaces and important objects, is deemed bad because of its actions. When it exhibits behaviours that are more paletable to the humans that care for it, it becomes a Good Doggy.
As a child, Tom was scared of his family's pet dog. Viewed through the lens of a terrified young boy, a dog that might be only the most loving and attentive creature, excited to play with someone similar to it in size, may appear vicious and unrelenting, causing fear and injury with its exuberent actions and disregard for its own strength. These experiences, whatever form they might have taken, left a visceral impact on Tom, as we see in his sketchbook containing the multiple-headed hellhound.
What happened to that dog? Was it ever rehabilitated? Did its status as a Good Doggy outweigh the trauma it potentially inflicted upon Tom's psyche? Or... did something else happen to it? Were its actions deemed too harmful, too Bad, to continue living with its owners?
We can only speculate on these points, but they do serve to provide an answer to the above question on how to stop Bad Doggies - you get rid of them. Give them away, abandon them, put them to sleep. Problem solved. But that doesn't just remove the Bad Doggy from the picture - it also eliminiates the Good Doggy that can provide comfort and companionship, as well as any potential future joy that same doggy could bring to its owners.
Which brings us back to the beach, and our Good Doggy having a nice nap there. Of course, I'm sure you've realised, it's also the Bad Doggy.
But what exactly does that mean for our "perfect", "happy", "peaceful" ending? Are we going to be savaged on the beach the moment we let our guard down, having fought so hard for the happiness we were so desparate to recover? Of ocurse not. But consider what its potential presence means for the future.
The Good and Bad Doggy are inexorably linked. To have the potential for joy and companionship and love, you must also accept the possibility of pain, conflict and loss. For better or worse, the bad has to come with the good - either you have both, or you have nothing at all. That's why there's no dog at the fake beach - that ending represents attempting to escape bad things altogether, but the world that results is unsatisfying and devoid of meaning. The reason things hurt so much is precisely because of the joy that came before it. Denying pain and sorrow is no better than giving up on life.
To live a meaningful life, we sometimes have to accept people as they come, warts and all.
Happiness, as Steve opines at the end of his journal, has to be fought for. But the fight doesn't stop just because you won once. Having resolved to come to terms with the world as it is, the world where your dearest friend has died, you therefore choose to re-enact that battle every single day. Some days it's easier. Some days, it's torture. That's what being alive is all about. That's what makes the moments of peace, the moments when Good Doggies really are Good Doggies and nothing more, all worth it in the end.
Thank you for reading :)

A Little Batty
Here it is... my @cssns contribution! It's late because I've been burned out, and it was originally going to have art by @spartanguard and be betaed by @ohmakemeahercules, but because I didn't get anything done until the last minute, I didn't want to impose.
--------
A Little Batty
Emma’s nights volunteering at the Storybrooke Bat Rehabilitation Center (locally referred to as ‘The Belfry’) weren’t something she’d ever imagined herself doing. She was no Disney princess; she didn’t have a natural rapport with animals. But The Belfry was her sister-in-law’s baby, and who was Emma to resist Mary Margaret’s pleading eyes? And she had to admit, any animal that let you roll it into a little burrito was cute.
Plus, her nights fell on the nights Henry was over at Neal’s. Though she didn’t think she was one of Those Moms who missed their children whenever they weren’t around, Emma admitted to herself that she was lonely when he was gone. Their creaky old house suddenly felt big and empty, and it became too much for Emma. At least at The Belfry, she could socialize without going to the effort of getting dressed up and going out in public.
Ruby was already there when Emma arrived. Unlike Emma, she did have a way with animals (“Not all animals; just creatures of the night,” she’d joked) and was the best at handling the animals when their cages needed cleaning.
And then there was Mary Margaret, who really was a Disney Princess, and you couldn’t convince Emma otherwise. All animals loved her, and she loved all animals.
They were gathered around Mary Margaret’s desk, discussing distribution of chores (Emma was not on cage-cleaning duty tonight, thank goodness) when they were interrupted by the arrival of William Smee, the man in charge of the local marina.
Emma thought at first he’d come specifically looking for her as sheriff, but he’d only nodded in greeting and headed straight to Mary Margaret.
He was wearing the thick gloves he used for dock work, and held what looked like a ratty old beach towel cupped in both hands. “Mrs. Nolan! I found a bat down at the docks. I didn’t know what else to do with him, so I brought him straight here.”
It was unusual for Smee to be working this late at night, especially past the tourist season, and Emma instinctively wondered why. She mentally scolded herself; she needed to stop being paranoid; not everyone did things for duplicitous reasons. Like her ex.
“Let’s see what you have,” Mary Margaret said. She opened the desk drawer and withdrew a set of the thick leather gloves they used when handling the bats. Smee pulled away the top layer of the towel, just enough to reveal his captive without releasing it.
Emma expected a large brown bat; they made up most of the local bat population, and thus most of The Belfry’s residents. She wasn’t prepared for when the towel fell away from a sharp, fox-like muzzle and huge eyes, topped with large, pointed ears.
It was a fruit bat. A rather large one, at that. It stared calmly back at them with its wide, dark eyes, and twitched its ears. It seemed completely unbothered at being a bat-burrito, suggesting it was accustomed to being handled. It yawned, exposing sharp canines, one of which had a small chip in it.
“Where did you find it?” Mary Margaret asked as she pulled on the thick leather gloves.
“He was down at the docks,” Smee said. “Nestled in a coil of rope. I almost missed him, but he squeaked at me. It’s like he wanted to get my attention.”
The bat squeaked, as though it were chiming in.
“He didn’t even put up a fight. He was easy to catch - you’ll see why,” Smee said as the last of the towel fell away, leaving the bat exposed in Mary Margaret’s hand. Annoyed, the bat spread its wings, and Emma ducked out of the way of the enormous right wing.
It was only after she righted herself that noticed his left wing, which Mary Margaret had caught and was gently holding. It was only half the length of the right, ending with a club of scar tissue just below what would have been the wrist. Mary Margaret was examining it critically, frowning.
“It’s an old injury,” Mary Margaret said, releasing the wing. The bat gave her a sour look and tucked it to his side. “No way he’s been living wild. He’s probably someone’s pet; a sailor, maybe, since you found him at the docks. He’s definitely used to being handled.”
He was also very obviously a ‘he,’ Emma couldn’t help but notice when the bat rolled over onto his back, his rear towards Emma. He looked towards her, gave a startled squeak, and wrapped his wings around himself.
Emma needed to stop anthropomorphizing the residents, because there was no way he could be embarrassed by accidentally flashing her.
“We’ll put him in one of the isolation cages for now,” Mary Margaret decided. “Just because he seems healthy now, doesn’t mean there’s nothing wrong with him. Ruby, I brought a banana for a snack; it’s in the break room if you could grab it for me, please?”
“Do you have any idea where he came from?” Emma asked Smee. Fruit bats were illegal to have as pets, and while Emma didn’t think the owner would get more than a fine, they could lead to a larger illegal animal trade organization. “Anyone new around the docks?” It was the wrong time of year for it, though; most of the boats that came to Storybrooke for the summer tourist season had departed in the last few weeks. It was possible one of them had left the bat, but that meant he’d been on the docks fending for himself for at least a week. He look too healthy for a pet that had been abandoned that long.
“We have one ship that’s wintering over for repairs, but he’s not the bat’s owner,” Smee said. He seemed very certain of this, but there was something shifty in his gaze as he said it. Emma prided herself at being good at detecting lies and Smee…wasn’t lying, not exactly, but he wasn’t telling the truth, either. Before Emma could pursue it further, however, Mary Margaret interrupted.
“Obviously, he can’t be released into the wild,” Mary Margaret sighed. “He seems pretty docile; we can probably put him in the bat educational program, assuming he’s healthy and remains easy to handle. Thank you for bring him, Mr. Smee. We’ll take good care of him.”
Smee took this as his cue to leave, but not without an odd backward glance at the bat.
Emma told herself the bat did not nod at Smee.
Ruby returned with the banana and began to peel it. At the sight of it, the bat began squeaking and straining towards it. “Someone’s hungry,” she cooed, and held it out. The bat’s mouth opened wide, and he tore off a chunk that looked like it should have been too large for him.
They let him eat as much as he wanted while Mary Margaret held him. When he was finished, consuming almost the entire thing (How? Emma wondered. Where did he put it all?), Mary Margaret said, “I need to feed the others. Emma, could you get some gloves and put this guy in the furthest isolation cage?”
Emma grabbed another set of gloves. “Isn’t he too big?” The cages were designed for much smaller brown bats; he’d be cramped.
“He should be okay for a few days. And since he can’t fly, we don’t have to worry about too little space. He should have enough room to spread his wings, at least.”
The bat chittered, and licked banana mush off its muzzle. “We’ll have more fruit for you tomorrow,” Mary Margaret promised. “A variety. How do you feel about strawberries?” She chattered on as she transferred him to Emma.
The bat squeaked excitedly.
Which was a valid reaction to strawberries, but couldn’t be in response to Mary Margaret’s words. Right?
Could bats pick up words, like dogs? Maybe he did understand ‘strawberries.’
Emma carried the bat to the back area, past the large, open enclosures that housed the permanent populations, as well as the wild ones that would be released as soon as they were ready. The isolation cages were smaller, designed to make it easy to catch a bat that would need constant care and observation.
She opened the door of the last cage, the largest, and gently lowered her hands. It took some prodding to move him off her palms, and at last he moved with great reluctance. He crawled across the floor of the cage to the bars, and immediately began to climb them to the top, unhindered by the missing finger bones of his wing, then crawled around the top until he found the perfect spot. He anchored his feet in place and dropped his body until he was hanging upside down, eye to eye with Emma. Then, with a great yawn, he pulled his wings around himself until only the tips of his ears were visible.
“Stay out of trouble,” she told him.
Emma could have sworn he’d winked at her.
~oOo~
Emma stopped by the marina at the end of her shift, curious if the bat’s owner had returned. Her attention was drawn to a ship she hadn’t seen before, a massive wooden ship that looked like it would be more at home in the Caribbean than in Maine. It was moored at the largest dock, and Emma saw it had no sails, nor any rigging. It must have been the ship Smee said was staying over for the winter, since that was the only reason to derig it. She hadn’t expected anything so… spectacular. The ship was gorgeous. She studied it curiously for several minutes, wondering who would own such a vessel, then shrugged and headed towards the main office. The door was locked, however; Smee had already left, and there was no one else on the docks.
She shrugged and headed to The Belfry.
Mary Margaret was already there, feeding the residents. It alway icked Emma out, to see her gentle sister-in-law feeding the ecstatic bats their mealworms.
“How’s our newest resident?” Emma asked.
“He was just waking up when I checked on him,” Mary Margaret said. “He looks alert, with no obvious signs of illness. The vet stopped by earlier to take some samples, so we should know soon if there’s any diseases we should worry about.” She frowned. “There was a bit of blood in his cage, but the vet couldn’t find any injuries. Did you cut yourself when you put him in the cage last night?”
“No,” she said, but examined her hands anyway.
“Huh. Well, if you’d like to feed him, there’s a bowl of fresh fruit in the fridge for him.” Mary Margaret grinned. “At least you’ll be able to feed this one without screaming,” she teased.
Emma scowled, because her revulsion to mealworms was totally valid, thank you very much.
Ruby had thrown a mealworm at her.
It had gone down her cleavage.
Emma was never going to touch a damn worm again.
Emma found the bowl of fruit, snagging a chunk of melon for herself before picking up the bowl and carrying it to the quarantine cage.
He was clinging to the bars of the cage when she arrived, his nose pressed to the fine mesh between the bars as though he’d been waiting for her. When he saw her - or, more likely, the bowl of fruit - he began to squeak excitedly.
Emma was charmed.
The name ‘Killian’ had been written on the paper taped to his cage, in fancy penmanship that Emma didn’t recognize.
“Killian, huh?” Emma asked.
The bat squeaked.
“Okay, if you say so.”
She snagged another piece of fruit - a strawberry this time, much to the bat’s indignation - then placed the bowl at the bottom of the cage. Killian quickly climbed down and hopped into the bowl, quickly losing himself in fruity bliss.
Emma laughed, then went to help Mary Margaret finish up.
“Who named him Killian?” she asked.
Mary Margaret frowned. “I thought you did. The name was there when I got here, and you were the last one to see him.”
“If I’d named him, it would be something like ‘Batty,’” Emma pointed out. “Or possibly ‘Dracula.’” She shrugged. “He seems to like it, so we may as well keep it.”
Mary Margaret gave her a strange look. “I’m sure he doesn’t care,” was all she said.
~oOo~
Killian’s test results came back clean. As long as his phlegmatic temperament continued, he’d be introduced to the other bats, though he’d be kept in a cage alone to accommodate his disability. He seemed fine with this; the smaller cage was beside the bigger one, so he could watch and communicate with the other bats if he chose. It also had bars that were easier to grip and climb. For a fruit bat with full, functional wings, it wouldn’t be ideal, but since Killian couldn’t fly, all he needed was enough room to stretch his wings to the fullest without touching the bars.
When he continued to be easy to handle, they decided it was safe to hold him without gloves. He seemed to like this, settling into Emma’s hands contentedly.
That was how she found out that bats <i>purred.</i>
“Oh,” Mary Margaret said. “He really likes you! Guess you’re his official caretaker from now on.”
Killian continued to purr in her hands. Emma decided maybe this wasn’t so bad.
Because he was so comfortable with people, even seeming to prefer their company, Emma took to carrying him around the sanctuary. Sometimes he’d be burritoed in a blanket, other times he’d drape over her shoulder, that incredibly long intact wing lazily hanging down. He seemed very curious about the computer whenever she played around with it at the desk (officially ‘doing paperwork’ for the sanctuary, but actually looking at memes) and she’d see his wide, dark eyes staring at the images.
He seemed especially interested in the staffing schedule.
Emma was also the only one he allowed to ‘fly’ him. It was something they did with elderly bats, holding them and carrying them around the sanctuary, wings spread, as if they were flying. Killian seemed bemused by the whole process, but allowed himself to be carried around.
Especially since the reward was always a bowl of fresh fruit - and gentle ear scritches from Emma.
~oOo~
Emma hadn’t intended to start dating again. Her divorce from Neal had been messy; he hadn’t been willing to let her go, despite his affair with his now-girlfriend Tamara. She thought she was done with men.
And then her sister-in-law introduced her to Walsh. They’d met when Mary Margaret had gone to the new furniture store in town, and she’d been charmed by his politeness.
Emma had tried to refuse Mary Margaret’s efforts to set them up, but then David had joined in. Her brother had thus far sided with Emma, and had talked Mary Margaret out of multiple attempts at a set-up. For him to approve of Walsh? That meant something. So Emma had reluctantly agreed to the date.
Walsh felt… safe. He was polite, respectful. Not particularly adventurous, which would have been a big turn-off once, but now it had appeal. Best of all, he didn’t argue with her every decision. She’d forgotten what it was like to be in a relationship with no drama.
One date became two, and plans were made for a third.
~oOo~
Emma arrived late to the sanctuary on the night of her second date. She hadn’t wanted to be out so late, but Walsh had admitted to being something of a night owl, and didn’t really eat until around nine in the evening. Emma had had to have a pre-dinner before dinner, because she knew she’d starve to death if she waited that long.
But she’d had more fun than expected. And eating later in the evening meant fewer diners, which had made the restaurant more intimate.
She’d liked it.
And the dim interior made it harder to maintain eye contact with Walsh. She’d noticed that he had a really intense gaze, and tried to meet hers as often as he could. It was… uncomfortable, for reasons Emma couldn’t really explain.
Emma put it out of her mind as she turned her attention on the anxious fruit bat, who was perched with his muzzle sticking out of the cage. At the sight of her, he gave several ear-piercing shrieks.
“Sorry! Sorry!”
Killian gave her a sour look.
“Hey! Don’t give me that! It’s not like you can tell time!”
He continued to glower.
“Okay, sorry!”
He tilted his head, considering. Then, with a sound that was almost a purr, he extended his right wing towards her thumb, snagging it with his clever little finger, and pulling her hand closer. He was about to pull himself onto her hand when he suddenly froze.
His nose twitched, wrinkled, and he bared his sharp little teeth. And then he did something he’d never done before.
He hissed.
Emma jerked her hands back. “Whoa! What’s with you today?”
He continued to stare at her as though she smelled rancid, and he wouldn’t come near her. Rather than stress him out further, Emma let him be. It wouldn’t hurt him to miss a night of flying.
~oOo~
A bat’s rejection shouldn’t have stung.
Killian continued to be edgy the rest of the night, so she left him alone.
After her shift, Emma realized she was too restless to sleep. Maybe it was a lingering excitement over the date, or maybe Emma really had taken Killian’s tantrum personally, but she didn’t want to go home. It was Neal’s weekend with Henry, and she couldn’t face being cooped up in that empty house.
So she went to The Rabbit Hole, Storybrooke’s only nightlife scene. She drew a few glances as she walked in, but they lost interest as soon as they saw she was off duty. She went straight to the bar and ordered a strawberry daiquiri, because apparently hanging around a fruit bat made you crave fruity things.
She’d been there maybe ten minutes when someone sat beside her. A richly accented voice that definitely did not send a shiver down Emma’s spine asked for a rum.
Emma waited until he’d been served his drink before turning to him and asking, “New in town?”
He turned, and Emma’s breath hitched when she met those blue, blue eyes. “What gave it away, Love?” he asked, amused.
English accents turned her into putty. Especially when combined with a smoldering gaze.
Mistakes had been made.
“I know everyone in this town,” she said. “You stick out like a sore thumb.”
“Oh? And who might you be?”
“I’m the sheriff,” she warned him.
“And you don’t take kindly to strangers ‘round these parts?” he mocked, adapting a twang.
“We’re fine with strangers - so long as they don’t bring trouble.”
He grinned, flashing sharp teeth. “And I look like trouble?”
Emma arched an eyebrow.
His smile widened. Oh, he knew exactly how he looked.
“Killian Jones,” he said, offering his hand. Emma lifted a brow when, instead of shaking, he brushed his lips across the back of her hand. “A pleasure to make your acquaintance.”
She hmmphed, refusing to be charmed by his old world manners.
Emma’s eyes fell on his left wrist, where a thick leather brace supported a rather alarming looking metal hook. His gaze followed hers. “Forgive the hardware,” he said. “Crude, I know, but it’s far more useful sailing than a more delicate prosthesis or a false hand.” He pulled his arm closer to his chest, not quite hiding it, but at least making it look less threatening.
His name wasn’t the only thing he had in common with their fruit bat.
“Are you a sailor, Mr. Jones?”
“Killian,” he reminded her. “Or Captain Jones, if you prefer to be formal. And I’m actually a pirate.”
Emma scoffed, then realized, “That old-fashioned ship in the marina! It’s yours!”
Killian nodded. “Aye, the Jolly Roger,” he said. That seemed a bit too on point. “I do charter sails for history buffs, as well as doing movie and television appearances. You’d be surprised what people will pay for a two-week Caribbean cruise with a dashing rapscallion like meself.” He grinned, and once again Emma had the unsettling thought that his teeth were very, very sharp.
“And what brings you here, Captain?”
“My ship is in need of repair, so I’m going to winter over in your lovely town,” he said.
“Odd; Granny Lucas didn’t mention taking in any lodgers,” Emma noted.
“I’ve made other arrangements,” Killian shrugged.
Maybe he’d leased a place, then. The cottages were usually only available to lease to summer tourists, but she wouldn’t be surprised if one of the owners made an exception.
“You don’t happen to own a bat, do you?” she asked suddenly.
He blinked rapidly, blindsided.
He had beautiful eyelashes.
“Like…a baseball bat?” he asked slowly.
“Never mind,” Emma muttered. She pulled a couple of crumpled bills out of her pocket and set them on the bar. She stood up. “Nice to meet you Mr. - Captain Jones. I’m sure I’ll see you around.”
“I didn’t get your name,” he said. It wasn’t a demand; rather, a polite inquiry. He was allowing her to be mysterious if she chose. Not that it would be hard to find out her name, since she was the sheriff. Still, she appreciated it.
“Emma Swan,” she said.
“See you around, Swan,” he said, low and throaty, and she totally did not shiver.
She left before she could embarrass herself.
~oOo~
Emma’s third date with Walsh led to a fourth.
After each date, Killian-the-bat would give her that angry hiss, and Emma wondered if he were somehow jealous that someone else was taking her time.
But he’d eventually get over it.
Which was probably a good thing, because they had their first school visit of the semester, and if he’d been cranky, he’d have missed out on having dozens of adoring children who cooed at him and gave him all the fruit he could ever want.
Though he wasn’t too crazy about being touched by their sticky fingers. But he allowed it, showing more patience than Emma had ever had.
She saw Killian-the-human several times over the next week; usually at the bar, once, coming out of the hardware store with items she assumed were for ship repair. Each time, he gave her a significant Look that she couldn’t read.
And then it happened, on a night when Emma was walking out of Granny’s diner with a bag full of carryout containers and a couple of donuts in preparation for an overnight shift at The Belfry.
After three weeks of casual conversation, Killian asked her out for a drink.
And Emma…she wanted to go.
Even though she barely knew him, she felt a spark with him, something that was more than just the thrill of his smoldering gaze.
“I’m actually seeing someone,” she said.
She hadn’t meant to sound regretful. She shouldn’t feel bad about dating Walsh, right?
“You don’t sound so certain,” Killian observed.
Dammit. “No, I am,” she said firmly. “He’s…nice.”
“All right,” Killian said. “I’ll see you around then, Swan.”
Emma released a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding. That had been harder than she’d expected. And a little part of her had feared he wouldn’t respond well to being ‘friendzoned.’
She watched him walk away, swaggering, then turned and stepped forward - into something very solid.
Walsh.
A deep frown was etched into his features. Emma wondered how long he’d been standing there in the dark, and if he’d heard everything.
“Who was that?” he asked.
Emma didn’t like his tone. Clearly, he had been eavesdropping.
“Just someone wintering over,” Emma said. “We talk occasionally.”
“He seemed to want to do more than talk,” Walsh said. His jaw was clenched, and Emma frowned. Oh, no. They were not going to do this.
“It doesn’t matter what he wanted,” Emma said coolly.
“Come to dinner with me,” Walsh said. It wasn’t a question.
Oh, hell no. She was not going to put up with this possessive bullshit.
“I have other plans,” she said.
“Like what?” he demanded.
“That’s none of your business,” she snapped.
Something flickered across Walsh’s face, then he abruptly deflated. “Sorry,” he said. “I know I have nothing to worry about. I just don’t want to lose you, Emma.”
Emma studied him, all senses on alert. But he seemed sincere enough. Still… “We’ll discuss this tomorrow,” she told him wearily. “Right now, I have to get going.”
She made it to The Belfry just as Ruby was leaving for the day. “I left some bags of popcorn for you for later,” she told Emma as she pulled on her coat. “There’s some Milk Duds, too.”
Emma grinned. “You’re the best, Ruby.”
“I know,” the other woman grinned toothily.
Nights at The Belfry tended to be long. Emma only over-nighted once a week, and she used the time to binge watch shows. The last time she’d done it, Killian-the-bat had sat on her shoulder and squeaked at the screen.
She’d just checked the bats and was about to put a bag of popcorn in the microwave when she heard the front door open.
Emma froze. She could have sworn she locked it.
And then a familiar voice called, “Emma?” and she relaxed. Marginally. Why was Walsh here?
“Walsh, hey,” Emma said cautiously. “We don’t really allow guests this late at night.”
“I’m not a guest, I’m your boyfriend,” he reminded her.
Emma went over to the front desk, sitting on the edge. Her hand crept over to the lamp on the corner.
“That doesn’t matter. You shouldn’t be here.”
“Why not? Is he here?”
Nope. Not doing this.
“Walsh… If you’re going to do this, then I don’t think we should see each other anymore. I’m not going to put up with someone who doesn’t trust me and stalks me at work.”
Walsh leaned back, staring down at her. But he made no move to leave. Emma braced herself for the inevitable meltdown.
Instead, he threw back his head and laughed.
At her shocked look, he said, “Did you think that would hurt me? It’s a relief, actually,” Walsh said. “Having to pretend to be interested in you is draining. You’re too abrasive, and you don’t trust anyone. Which, admittedly, was the right choice here. But it’s over now, and my master will reward me well.”
His eyes were red. Not bloodshot, but glowing a baleful crimson. “What the fu-”
Then their eyes locked, and Emma felt…something. It writhed around in her mind, clawing into her, leaving her feeling dirty. He was inside her head somehow, and she wanted him out, out, OUT!
Emma jerked her gaze away, and Walsh snarled.
“Why isn’t this working?” Walsh fumed. “You should be mine!” Then he smirked, showing off far too sharp teeth. “Guess we’ll have to do this the fun way, then.”
Emma reacted. Her hand flew to the heavy lamp on the desk corner, and she flung it at Walsh’s head. He didn’t react in time, and it hit him squarely in the forehead.
He didn’t even flinch.
It should have taken him down, or at least disoriented him long enough to continue attacking or escape. No man should have taken a direct hit to the head and just shaken it off.
He wasn’t normal.
He wasn’t human.
So Emma ran.
Her lunge to the side caught Walsh by surprise, and he didn’t immediately react. It bought her a few precious seconds to dart through the door leading towards the cage room.
There was an emergency exit in the back of the sanctuary. Emma sprinted towards it.
Walsh stepped out of the shadows, blocking her path.
<i>How?!</i> How had he gotten in front of her? It wasn’t possible!
“I’m not here to kill you, Emma,” Walsh said in exasperation. “I’m just going to take you to my master.”
Killian shrieked, beating his wings against the bars of his cage. Walsh ignored him.
“But…nobody said I couldn’t rough you up a bit.” His hands extended towards her, tipped in razor sharp claws.
Killian fell silent.
Emma dropped to the floor and kicked her leg out, hitting Walsh in the knee with bone-breaking force. It didn’t do more than stagger him, however, and he quickly recovered. Emma rolled away, but misjudged her direction and slammed into one of the cages. The bats inside fluttered their wings in agitation.
Walsh lunged towards her.
And then Walsh crashed to the floor. Something bumped and rolled across the floor, coming to a stop before Emma. Walsh’s head, the red fading from his eyes as they slowly dimmed.
Standing over the body was Killian, the human Killian, dressed in black leather and wielding what looked like a pirate’s cutlass. “Are you all right, Love?” he asked.
His eyes had the same red glow as Walsh’s.
“What the fuck?” Emma shrieked.
Killian gave her a crooked smile.
A fang poked out from behind his lips.
“Apologies, Love,” Killian Jones said. The red was fading from his eyes, though the sharp fangs remained. “I’ll clean up the mess.”
Emma just stared at his teeth.
One of them was chipped. Just like Killian-the-bat’s.
“You’re…you’re…”
“A vampire, yes,” Killian said. As if it were the most normal thing in the world. But Emma supposed that made more sense than what she’d been about to say: You’re my bat! “As was your…boyfriend.”
“He wasn’t my boyfriend,” Emma muttered. “It was just a couple of dates.”
“Mmph.” He crouched down, examining Walsh’s body. Then, to her horror, he dragged his finger through the small pool of blood and put it in his mouth.
“He’s a neophyte; probably not more than a year since he was changed. Which means his master has to be close by, because a vampire this young seldom strays far from his master.” Killian studied her closely. “Which means he was specifically sent to seduce you. I wonder why?”
Emma didn’t want to think about that. She didn’t know, she wasn’t special.
“You somehow resisted his attempt to control you,” Killian continued. “That’s a rare gift.”
”You should be mine,” Walsh had said.
“How can you be a vampire?” There was a shrill edge of panic to her voice. This was too much, far too much.
“It’s a long story,”  he said. “I won’t get into that tonight. All you need to know is that I hunt vampires like him, those who break our laws and hunt humans.”
“But… I’ve seen you during the day.” Walsh, on the other hand, she’d never before sunset. She’d just assumed he was a night owl, not a freaking <i>vampire</i>
“I’m over 300 years old. I’ve developed an immunity to sunlight. I don’t like it, but I can go out in it.”
“Three hun-” Her brain stuttered to a halt. “Are you actually a pirate?”
Killian chuckled. “I have been called such, yes. I prefer ‘dashing rapscallion.’”
“You would,” she scoffed.
“There’s that spirit,” he said approvingly. “It’s a lot to take in, I know.”
She tried to back away, forgetting in her panic that the cage was behind her.
“I’ve been here over a month, and you haven’t had any mysterious deaths or illnesses related to blood loss, aye?”
There hadn’t been, actually. The town had been as calm as it always was after the tourist season ended. That didn’t mean Killian didn’t do his hunting elsewhere, but she hadn’t heard anything from the nearest towns, either.
“So…you’ve been living in town as a bat and a human for a month, and no one even noticed?”
“The werewolf knows, but she and I reached an understanding.”
“The…the werewolf…” Emma repeated faintly.
“The lovely Miss Lucas,” Killian said. “She figured out what I was fairly quickly, but we came to an agreement.”
“Ruby…is a werewolf…”
“Aye. She’ll probably be furious that I told you, but she will vouch for me. She knows our laws, and how strictly we enforce them.”
This was all too much. Emma had snapped. She blurted out the next thing that came to mind. “Shouldn’t you be a <i>vampire bat</i>?”
Killian looked pained. “I don’t have the most fearsome bat form, I admit.” And then his expression became lascivious. “But I’m certainly one of the biggest.”
Of course you are, Emma thought.
Emma’s hands were still shaking. She clenched her fists, hoping to hide the trembling.
He noticed, however, and his face softened.
“I mean you no harm, Swan,” Killian said softly. “I rarely need to partake in human blood, and then only with willing donors. This town is safe from me.” His gaze went to Walsh’s corpse. “His master, however, seems to have no such qualms. It appears we were right about his intentions.”
“Is…is that why you’re here?” Emma asked.
“To find his master, yes,” Killian said. “We suspected that a powerful old vampire was no longer keeping to our laws, and I was dispatched to track them. So I’m afraid you’re stuck with me for some time. Though I suppose you’ll want me to find other accommodations,” he added regretfully. “Pity; you have some lovely fruit.”
Emma assumed that was supposed to be an entendre, but when she looked at his expression, she realized that, no, he actually meant fruit. What kind of vampire fed on fruit? “You can stay for now, until you find something better,” Emma offered. “Although, you will have to put up with the Bat Education Program,” she finished apologetically. “Mary Margaret wants to make you the star. But somehow, I don’t think you mind being the center of attention.”
Killian grimaced. “I’ll tolerate it. But only if the children wash their hands,” he growled
“She’s calling you the ‘am-bat-sador,’” Emma warned.
”Bloody hell,” Killian groaned. “But it will help me guard the children. They’re preferred victims of rogue vampires,” he concluded grimly.
A shiver went down her spine, and this time it wasn’t because of his accent.
Something evil was coming to Storybrooke.

As someone who is disturbed by deer antics around my house (standing on two legs, heads poking out of bushes and just staring at you) if I saw a deer in a harness with like canine teeth and/or thorns sticking through it and murder in it's eyes, I probably would mind my own goddamn business because that thing is some cryptid living his best life and I'm not gonna mess with it.
Rural people know you leave that thang alone.

by Troy O. Fritzhand
Details have emerged of how a dog in one of the IDF most elite units saved the lives of six soldiers in Gaza, as the wounded recount the canine’s heroism.
In an interview with Hebrew media, Sergeant N. of the Oketz Unit, a counterterrorism force that uses specially trained dogs for their missions, talked about how his dog Ziggy was killed by two Hamas terrorists in Khan Yunus early in January.
“I entered the house with the force of the 101st Paratrooper and Engineering Battalion. We did a scan on the first floor, I insisted that the devoted dog Ziggy also do a scan on the second floor of the residence. As soon as he came down the staircase of the house in Khan Yunis, the terrorists shot at him, and Ziggy was killed on the spot. He saved my life and the lives of six other fighters who were in the building,” he said.
In the process of the close range combat, N. and some of his unit mates were injured. He told reporters that currently he is “Hospitalized in the orthopedic department, suffering from a problem with my knee, which received a terrible blow from shrapnel. I got a lot of shrapnel on my left side from a shot, but I am making progress here in the rehabilitation department, and I especially miss my dog Ziggy, who was with me from a very young age… My hero and beloved dog Ziggy, who was close to me for a year and a half, saved my life and the lives of the other fighters.”
Ziggy’s body was brought back to Israel, where it is sitting in a refrigerator for burial as soon as N. and those from his unit have recovered, so they can be present for the funeral. N. added, “I hope I will recover soon and then I will come with the friends he saved and bring my hero dog to the burial… and, of course, I will return to our amazing unit.”
The IDF’s canine unit is revered around the world, with many countries, such as India, even purchasing some of the dogs to assist their forces. The dogs are specially trained to attack and neutralize terrorists. The dogs are Belgian Shepherds, and have the ability to search for weapons, find explosives, and save people buried under rubble. At the end of their service, the dogs are usually taken by their handlers for civilian life.

The Ultimate Masterpost/Masterlist of Wolf Books And Resources
Introduction
Hello hello, and welcome to the ultimate post on wolf resources, brought by me, a person with too much free time who recently had coffee for the first time in years and I can feel it. Before I start I want the reader to know that this will be a very long post, so be prepared! Maybe grab some water or something as you may be here for a while. (ending note, it took me five hours plus a few minutes to make this, it’s long).
So a while ago I made this post upon being asked for book recommendations on wolves, and I happily provided a brief but not entire list. I wanted to create a more extensive list, but have yet to have an opportunity to do so. Now that time has passed, I’m finally going to be making it. I remember how hard it was to find solid resources when I first started personal research on wild canids, so hopefully this post can help other wide eyed individuals who are hungry for the good Knowledge.
I few disclaimers before I start: 1. this list is not at all an exhaustive list of all resources, as there are likely many more I am leaving out. 2. Along with that, I am not an expert, I am simply someone who is neurodivergent and needs something to tether me to the real world or else I will lose it who has some free time and a deep love for animals, especially canines. I am pursuing a degree in wildlife conservation and rehabilitation, but even that is the extent of my knowledge. 3. This list will mainly focus on books, but if I have time I will add some other resources to (ending note: I had time :) ).
Without further ado (adieu?), it is 11:20 in the morning while starting this, lets get on with the books!
Quick Side Notes
Real quick, the following are names you will want to keep an eye out when researching wolves:
- Rick McIntyre (wolf interpreter; has recorded more sightings of wild wolves than any other person, he has a treasure trove of information and it is a dream of mine to meet him one day, now retired)
- L. David Mech (wildlife research biologist; focuses on large carnivores, mainly wolves, A+ dude who I would love to meet one day)
- Douglas W. Smith (wildlife biologist in YNP; project leader of the Yellowstone Gray Wolf Restoration Project, another dude I’d love to meet, now retired)
- Mark Bekoff (biologist and animal behavior extraordinaire; I’ve seen some info   such as intense vegan ideas (?), but I don’t think he would be labeled as an ARA, on the advisory board for Project Coyote (which I’ve heard has some ARA tendencies though I’ll have to double check), has worked with Mech)
- Thomas McNamee (author; served on the board of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition, I don’t think he’s a biologist but I may be wrong)
- Carter Neimeyer (wildlife biologist; was also a trapper for the government and a wolf recovery coordinator in Idaho, now retired)
- Daniel R. MacNulty (assistant professor and I think biologist?; involved in the Yellowstone Wolf Project since reintroduction (1995), hard to find info on but he created a very important book along with others Wolves on the Hunt which will be covered in this post)
- Other: Nate Blakeslee (author), Jim and Jamie Dutcher (authors), Aldo Leopold (author and biologist), Ernest Thomas Seton (author and naturalist), Daniel R. Stahler (biologist, YWP lead biologist to be specific).
Another note is that I was originally going to create a google doc with more info on these books, including ISBN numbers, cheapest ways to find the books, basic info, etc. but I realized that I could also put that here to prevent me doing extra work as this post already has so much. I will list the Amazon (hate the mega corporation, but I realize its the only option for some) and Thriftbooks, but eBay, Abebooks, and others may be of use too. Note: This post was written and published on 7/25/23, so prices may vary in the future!
I also may add that at the end of the majority if not all of these books is a long reference section filled with amazing resources. I usually highlight any of interest and save them in a doc for future use!
Some of these books are older and may be more expensive. If the book is old enough, sometimes there may be a pdf of it available online, all you need to do is google it! To find only PDF’s, search up the following: filetype:pdf (insert book name here).
An example using a real book is as follows:
Tumblr media
I am all for supporting authors, so I’d recommend buying said books to read if possible instead of using certain sites that allow you to use them for free. Unless it’s like, a mega corporation run by shitty people, then have at it.
Lastly, the longer ago the book was published the more you should fact check it with more recent information. I’d venture to say anything before 1981 or perhaps even 1990 should be fact checked, juuuuust in case. For example, a the first book listed under books to avoid was published in 1981, and is now considered outdated. I am going to include books published before or around that just to see how ideas and theories on wolves have changed over the years.
Now that we got that covered, it is 12:03 PM, on to the books!
American Wolf by Nate Blakeslee
Tumblr media
This book is an amazing source about wolf 06′s life, aka 832F, in YNP.  Not only does it follow the anonymous identity of the hunter who killed 06 and gives an insight on his part of the story, but it also follows the ordeal of wolves in court during 06′s life (2006 - 2012) and has personal insights from Rick McIntyre who followed and recorded data and sightings on 06 from her birth to death. I will warn you though, every time I read and reread this book I am brought to tears because of 06′s beauty and final days, as well as the reaction even the biologists had upon her death, who usually are professional and try not to be emotionally invested in the animals (which isn’t always the case). All above, a 10/10 book which will leave you stunned and amazed and bawling.
Find it at a bookstore or on Amazon for $13.99 and Thriftbooks for $4.39 to $5.79.
The Alpha Wolves of Yellowstone Series by Rick McIntyre (not in order, The Reign of Wolf 21, the Redemption of Wolf 302, The Alpha Female Wolf, The Rise of Wolf 8, and more to come!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rick McIntyre is a name you will see a lot on this list, namely for his knowledge on wolves, which he not only got from viewing wolves in the wild every day for roughly 9,000+ days but also from working in YNP, beginning as the worlds first Wolf Interpreter with the social/public side, and then along with the biology side of the project. His books cover the in depth lives of the wolves he’s watched over the years along with various science tidbits and research. An all around 10/10 series from someone who you may just catch watching wolves in the park early in the morning if you’re in the right place at the right time! Note: will also make you cry.
You can find some of these at a bookstore, but I’ve had hard luck with others. Wolf 8 and Wolf 21 are usually in stores, but the others are usually bought online via Amazon or others.
(In order)
- Wolf 8: Amazon $17.95, Thriftbooks $13.89
- Wolf 21: Amazon $17.95, not seeing any on Thriftbooks at this time
- Wolf 302: Amazon $25.99, Thriftbooks $17.49
- Wolf 06: Amazon $17.99, Thriftbooks $22.40
Wolves on the Hunt by L. David Mech, Douglas W. Smith, and Daniel R. MacNulty
Tumblr media
This book may just be the biggest published treasure trove of information on wolf hunting accounts there is. From elk and bison to beaver and snowshoe hares (and fish!), this book covers real life, in the moment accounts of wolves hunting their prey. It covers wolves in YNP, Voyageurs National Park, Isle Royale, Glacier National Park, and so on and so forth, giving you an array of wolf hunting behavior in various areas. A must have that took me a while to get through.
Find it at a bookstore or on Amazon for $54.00, not seeing one on Thriftbooks.
War Against the Wolf: America’s Campaign to Exterminate the Wolf by Rick McIntyre
Tumblr media
I know I’ve spoken highly of all the books on here so far, but I cannot emphasize how important this book is. War Against the Wolf is the end all be all of history accounts of how society in the US’s views have shifted and altered throughout history. From the moment white people came to the US and starting killing wolves, to the present day, it covers a lot, really helping you understand what wolves have had to go through. !!Trigger Warning/disclaimer for this book!!: I will note that a lot of topics touch on the cruel and terrible treatment of the wolves, coyotes, various wildlife in America, and the Indigenous in this book. If you have a big sensitivity to animal abuse and cruelty, maybe skip this one, as it covers horrendous treatment of animals. Regarding Indigenous peoples’, the book will mention a few ways the Native Americans were treated poorly, whether it be through being paid less for bounties for animal carcasses, to the scalping of the Indigenous along with wolves and others (yes you read that right, wolves and other carnivores such as cougars and coyotes were scalped by mainly white dudes who wanted them for a bounty). Though this book is very important in understanding the trials wolves have faced, it is not worth triggering yourself.
Hard to find in bookstore, if possible, but it’s $25.19 on Amazon, not seeing one on Thriftbooks.
A Society of Wolves: National Parks and the Battle Over the Wolf by Rick McIntyre
Tumblr media
This book is somewhat of a beginner-ish/introduction to wolves. It was made around the same time as wolves were being/thinking about being reintroduced into YNP. It covers basics, like the life and growth of pups, the pack dynamics, hunting behavior, etc. but nothing too in depth. It’s a bit of a lighter read, but still a very good one!
Very hard to find at a bookstore, if possible, but on Amazon for $18.69 and $6.89 on Thriftbooks.
Decade of the Wolf: returning the Wild to Yellowstone by Douglas w. Smith and Gary Ferguson
Tumblr media
It’s been a hot minute since I read this one, but from what I remember is has “portraits” of wolves, AKA snippets of their life in YNP. It has a fair amount of details regarding their lives and iirc some insight on their behavior. It’s truly a sweet book and really made me think about their individual lives and quirks more than I already did.
Haven’t seen it in a bookstore, but maybe? On Amazon for $16.95 and Thriftbooks for $6.69.
Books That I Have Yet to Read or Haven’t Read in a While
Now, here is a list of books I’ve read too long ago to recall correctly, or just haven’t read at all. These books are also important, and I’m excited to get my hands on them (whenever that happens) or reread. This list won’t be as in depth as the above one, but it will lead to certain links that’ll give you a description of said books.
A Wolf Called Romeo by Nick Jans
About a wolf who befriended various dogs in Alaska (wolfdog speculation?). $13.99 on Amazon.
Vanishing Lobo: The Mexican Wolf in the Southwest by James C. Burbank
About the disappearance of Mexican wolves in the south/southwest. $3.72 on Amazon.
Canids of the World: Wolves, Wild Dogs, Foxes, Jackals, Coyotes, and Their Relatives by Dr. Jose R. Castello
About various canines throughout the world. DISCLAIMER: Through a few sources and research of my own I have discovered a few things about this book: 1. the coyote section is very poorly put together and one shouldn’t take too much info from it, if any, due to many inconsistencies and mistakes. And 2. there is a section on foxes about arctic foxes specifically, but the animal pictured is actually either a silver marble color morph (no, not a Canadian Marble fox as that is not a thing and so help me if I see it again I will smack someone on the head with a stick) or a Georgian white color morph on a red fox (pretty sure it’s the marble but don’t quote me on that!) and is NOT a arctic fox. All that being said, probably don’t rely on this book too much without other info, sources, and double checking claims. $21.99 on Amazon.
Biology and Conservation of Wild Canids by David W. Mcdonald and Claudio Sillero-Zubiri
Not just about wolves, but a great in depth read on canids. $37.83 - $88.00 on Amazon just for a paperback.
The Wild Canids: Their Systematics, Behavioral Ecology and Evolution by Michael W. Fox
Not entirely sure what this book entails, but I’m looking for it anyway! $26.95 on Amazon.
Wolves: Biology, Ecology, and Conservation by L. David Mech and Luigi Boitani
A very good and must have book for canine lovers in general. $30.00 on Amazon.
Wolves of the World: Perspectives of Behavior, Ecology and Conservation by  Fred H. Harrington and Paul C. Paquet
Although very expensive, I’ve heard good things about this one, so I’m betting it’s worth it. $72.95 on Amazon.
The Grand Lady of Yellowstone: & Other Wolf Stories by Brad A. Bulin and Carolyn Bulin
A lovely book on what I believe is mostly wolves in YNP, but could also be about ones elsewhere. $14.95 on Amazon.
Wolf Island: Discovering the Secrets of a Mythic Animal by L. David Mech
Another lovely book by the legend of a biologist himself. It’s also more recent, so it’s likely to have up to date information.
The Wolves of Minnesota by L. David Mech
$23.04 for paperback on Amazon, cheaper in hard cover.
Wolves of Denali by L. David Mech
$27.02 in paperback on Amazon.
The Arctic Wolf: Ten Years with the Pack by L. David Mech
$29.80 hard cover on Amazon.
The Way of the Wolf by L. David Mech
$17.46 on Amazon.
Wolves of Isle Royale by L. David Mech
Want a break from the Yellowstone wolves? Check the books based in Minnesota out! $28.24 on Amazon.
Yellowstone Wolves: Science and Discovery in the World's First National Park by Douglas W. Smith
$32.55 on Amazon.
The Wolves of Yellowstone by  Michael K. Phillips and Douglas W. Smith
$19.99 on Amazon.
The Killing of Wolf Number Ten: The True Story by Thomas McNamee
$11:94 on Amazon.
The Return of the Wolf To Yellowstone by Thomas McNamee
$9.65 on Amazon.
Wolfer: A Memoir by Carter Neimeyer
A book on a wolfer (a name dubbed to one who kills wolves, usually way back when with violent techniques) turned advocate. $8.62 on Amazon.
The Wisdom of Wolves: Lessons From the Sawtooth Pack by Jim and Jamie Dutcher
The book I am currently reading. Not about wild wolves but instead about a pack that was captive bred and brought in for a film. $11.99 on Amazon.
Books on Wolves to Stay Away From
The following book(s) are things that are either poorly written or completely and utterly false. Keep an eye on these and take what they say with a grain of salt.
The Wolf: The Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species by L. David Mech
This book was amazing at the time of it’s publishing, but throughout the years Dave Mech even admitted that he wasn’t fond of it’s popularity, mainly due to the section on “alphas” and wolf hierarchy that we now deem false. For these reasons I probably won’t read this book and wouldn’t really suggest it due to it’s outdated material.
Online Resources To Look Into (and Avoid)
The following resources are sites or other material you can use to find more information on wolves:
- The International Wolf Center (where I get a lot of my wolf news)
- The International Wolf Center YouTube Channel (a great place to observe and learn about wolf behavior, body language, etc. while you watch the ambassador wolves on camera interacting. Their FB is mainly promotional stuff but it also is a good source for information on upcoming events about wolves)
- The Wolf Conservation Center (they have a YouTube channel too, but I have yet to actively check it out, but I’d suggest looking into it for fun just in case. I think the FB group is similar to the IWC’s FB as mentioned above)
- The Voyageur's Wolf Project (the wolf study project in northern Minnesota)
- The Voyageur’s Wolf Project YouTube Channel (lots of trail cam footage and cool stuffs!)
- The Voyageur’s Wolf Project Facebook (here me out; FB is a cesspool BUT the VWP actually have a lot of very good posts on their page about the wolves they work with, just, maybe be wary when going into the comment section)
- I am hesitant to share this because I don’t want a sudden rush of people joining to clog up systems, but it’s still a good tool. If you go to this site or this FB page, you may be able to get access to the ancestry and lineage of the wolves of YNP, available on ancestry.com. I think you need an account on the site, but hopefully you don’t absolutely need to do the genetic test for yourself in order to access it. If you are able to figure out the instructions, please be kind, courteous, and not pushy when you contact the person who runs it because they are a person too.
- Bonus: You know I have to plug my favorite game; if you’re into more casual learning, the video game Wolf Quest, a game I’ve played going on 12 years now, is completely based on realism down to the genetics and behavior of the animals in game. The developers get a lot of their information from the IWC and wolves in YNP, even directly from biologists! Their blog also shows some interesting facts being implemented into the game, so it’s a win win.
A couple things to avoid is, of course, Facebook groups and general social media things. The above groups mentioned may be okay (just be wary of the comment sections), but any sort of media that seems problematic, AKA people interacting with wildlife, any ARA behavior, general endangerment of animals and other people, should be avoided. I’d also venture to say that anything that really pushes the dominance/alpha theory is a no go. I know some biologists still use the term loosely, but that’s for a few reasons that I will make a post about in the future.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I hope this post was helpful for as many people as possible. My instinct is to try and keep this information, frankly because I’m worried something bad will happen if I share it, but my therapist says that’s just anxiety, so hopefully she’s right.
Of course, you do not have to look through all the books and resources here. These are all from my personal research and I try to be thorough; you will not be any less of a “smart” person by not looking into everything.
(tw slight mental health talk ahead, just for this paragraph) So... yeah! It’s 3:23 PM as of now. I’ve spent roughly five hours on this post and I hope it helps maybe just one person. Wolves have quite literally saved my life, in fact the first time I read Rick McIntyre’s books I was in an inpatient hospital for an eating disorder. The wolves and their stories reminded me that I have to keep going, not for me, but to help them. I’m doing better now, and am planning a tattoo in wolf 8, 21, and 06′s memory for helping me through that dark time.
Anyway, enough with the sappy stuff, go on and gain some knowledge, I hope this helped! <3

'Pompeii ' pt3
Warnings: mentions of ptsd, war, and angst
Yeah, so just like the konig one, this is only to get one more part due to the fact that I wanted this to be a more so bitter sweet and cut to the chase type fic. But don't worry the longer ones are on their way
The blinding lights that seemed like the heavens gates opened up and beamed down onto your eye, utterly filling it with blurred circles and twos of everything. And then a snarl erupted from your lips at the blurred faces above you as you lunged upward with an impeccable view of the adrenaline swimming through you to fight at whoever was blurred in your vision until a harsh grip held your shoulders and utterly pinned you still back down against the beds groaning metal frame and mattress that seemed to drowning you. Everything burned. Everything rang. Everything was buzzing.
You were..
Alive?
Your focus then snapped back into reality, almost like a whiplash, and then everything went...quiet. So utterly quiet...the calm before a storm it seemed.
And then you saw a pair of blue eyes boring down into your own.
"Simon?"
It's been months and months of hunting down the rest of the cartel. And months and months more of rehabilitation due to your undying stubborness to stick with 141 even with a knurled face and one eye. And Ghost...no.. Simon was there every step of the way. You made it out of there barely alive, and they said, with a broken rib and almost a snapped spine... lucky they said. Lucky. But..it didn't take away your ability to shoot.. or even utterly be even perhaps a better soldier It seemed. Gave you an edge. And made you like a rapid dog with the wrong things.
And that just happened.
Price was smoking a cigar and got too close to you and then your blind spot, and once the smell hit you..
All you saw was the room filled with dirt and the smell of blood as you recoiled and swung yourself frantically in pain in the chair. Your vocal cords raw and pain stricken your eye tumbled to the floor and all you felt was excruciating pain and your face was pinned..and the smell of Burning flesh filled your nostrils as a cigar was all that was your other eye saw before it snapped shut as you reared around mad with pain..
it was too late for Simon, who was sitting right next to the two of you... and he watched as your pupil dilated and your scarred side of your face that now reveled quite the sight of some of your side teeth, including your lower jaw and upper, canines, gums, and tongue as well, and traveled up to the now empty and healed hole of an eye socket... roll into a snarl, more so your teeth baring as you twisted at Price and the white of your eye showed pure utter horror as strangled noise came out of you. Followed by a noise of a stool clattering the floor, Price yelling and the noise of a loud thud. You had whammed him right in his face, and Simon had almost ran out of his chair while the others checked on Price, and you practically reared out of your chair, panting harshly as you hit the tiled floor with a thud and Backed up like a spooked animal would frantically against the drawers of the kitchen. Your eyes were wide and horrored as you realized what you had just done. And then you saw the look in Prices' eyes change from being practically gobsmacked to a soft sorry look as he realized what had just happened.
Tears pricked your eyes as the images just utterly fluttered through your skull, and all you saw was Ghost veer into your vision.
And then he looked over his shoulder before snapping back to you as you spoke,
"Fuck! Price I'm sorry....I'm so sorry"
And then Price, as he was getting up, spoke, as he left the room, practically and evidently going to the infirmary to get it checked out with the knowledge that you had drawn blood,
"Easy kid, you didn't. There's nothing wrong, I should've known to stay away from ya on that side let alone with a cigar."
And with that He was gone.
And so was everyone else.
Just you and Simon.
And then, you felt yourself unable to even breathe, and as a harsh pant filled you lungs with gasps, a harsh hand gripped your chin to look him in his eyes. Your eye wincing as it struggled to focus on just one eye or let alone anything else in the room.
"Easy there, hey,Hey! Just look at me. I know you can still see my eyes through the mask. Focus there. You're fine. Your ok. I got you now. I got you."
And with a choked sound, you utterly just hugged the man, and you both sat there as you cried into his shoulder, and your breath returned..and you two sat there long after you had stopped crying, with you sniffling and him just sitting there holding you as he lowly whispered small words of encouragement and kindness? All you felt was the rumble of his chest as he spoke..his breath..his heartbeat
And slowly, by the steady and strong beat of the man that held you, you had been lulled to sleep.. and you found yourself with the best sleep you've had for months after the incident.

might be some controversial takes about Hazbin/Helluva under the cut but honestly I really don't know what the popular consensus is about any of it. I'm gonna try to keep these short but here's a list of thoughts I have so far.
-I'm interested in where Hazbin could go. The concept of rehabilitation for sinners and how the meaning of rehabilitation could change, as well as the unbalanced power of heaven vs. hell and who are the true sinners is very interesting.
-I don't find myself laughing at the humor of any of these shows. It feels like the kind of humor that's only supposed to shock you with the vulgarity. Which is only really funny to a teenager, not the intended adult audience.
-the music is hit or miss, mostly miss. The Hazbin pilot songs I particularly did not enjoy.
-the animation and design are nice, tho I'm not really sure who to credit with that, as I have been made aware that Vivziepop tends to take "inspiration" from artists in an informal manner.
-really do not like the sound design. The noises are obnoxious, the volumes are all over the place and there have been times where I cannot hear what characters are saying.
-voice acting is pretty good. I understand that fans got very upset when a lot of the actors for Hazbin had to be recast with union members and tbh I'm not bothered by that. Support unions.
-im worried about what they're gonna do with Vaggie. She's starting out as the partner to the main character but she's also been established as the "PC" character who annoys the fan favorites Angel Dust and Alastor.
-I'm not at all interested in Alastor, he looks like a satire of the Vivziepop style.
-Angel Dust is interesting, and I'm not too bothered by seeing an openly and overtly queer character, even if it's not sanitized. I am a little concerned about how quickly his character depth was revealed long before the first season is even finished. Could Viv really not wait to talk about Angel Dust that much? What will be left to explore in the show?
-also like, we are getting a LOT of content for Hazbin including a spinoff already on its second season, tons of merch and lots of droplets of information that end up on the wiki BEFORE the first season of the show is even out and it doesn't feel right, like the crew is celebrating the success of the show before its even out. Weird stuff. Not sure if it's gonna bite them in the ass yet.
-the Helluva pilot was not enjoyable at all and I didn't actually start watching the show until the second season
(here comes the big one)
-I actually don't mind too much what's being done with Stolas. It makes sense that a person with very few friends and trapped in an arranged marriage with a cruel partner would make the decisions that he has, regardless of whether or not they are the right ones.
-What I am concerned with is if the story with Stolas was planned from the beginning, or if it was decided later on to recontextualize his character when they crew decided they liked Stolas more than as just a cutaway gag in the pilot.
-Moxxie and Millie are... okay. On one hand it's nice to see throughout everything Moxxie has been through, as well as literally being in Hell, he still retains his kindness, empathy and love for his wife. Millie is... okay, but I get the feeling that she exists to keep Moxxie from becoming the series punching bag, like as compensation. Or a way to inject some "wholesomeness" into our main characters. I keep hearing that a Millie episode is on the way, but I don't know what really to expect.
-as a furry/scalie who isn't into canine anthros, I'm not into Loona.
-I'm interested in seeing more of what the other rings of Hell look like, tho I fear that the Gluttony ring is going to be filled with fatphobic jokes.
-The action scenes are usually pretty cool, tho with the Vivziepop style it can be a bit eye-strain-y for me.
-vivziepop stans are scary. seeing them jump to her defense whenever she faces a major criticism is frustrating and it only incites a bigger wave of criticism. see this post if you want my extended thoughts about it.
-this series is being produced, written and released in a way I don't think I've ever seen so I'm gonna try to keep an open mind about it, but that does not mean I'm gonna enjoy it blindly NOR am I gonna nitpick it. I'm gonna keep up with it and maybe share more of my thoughts, tagged accordingly and under 'read more' lines.
