GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Columbia Pictures
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: In the shadow of the iconic New York City firehouse, the Spengler family reunites with the original Ghostbusters. In a new location in Queens they delve into a top-secret research lab, where advanced ghost-busting technology awaits. However, an ancient artifact's discovery unleashes a horde of ghosts, plunging the city into a deathly chill. The only hope for salvation lies in the combined forces of the old and new Ghostbusters as they battle to protect their home and save the world from a looming second Ice Age.
REVIEW: Set after the events of "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" in 2021, "GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE" is a compelling addition to the franchise. It deftly blends elements from the original characters, the animated series, and the computer games, resulting in a movie that caters to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.
In the sequel to the Ghostbusters franchise, Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman's screenplay skillfully interweaves original and new characters, allowing each one to shine. The ghostly threat in this film is a formidable and epic menace, similar to a Bond villain. A variety of new and classic ghosts provide diverse challenges. Key locations include the firehouse, Ray Stantz's Occult bookshop, and the New York Public Library on Fifth Avenue.
At the heart of the story is Phoebe Spengler's struggle to balance being a teenager, a Ghostbuster, and her family relationships. This dynamic adds depth and substance to the narrative as the new characters become integrated into the Ghostbusters universe. The film offers a highly satisfying tale and includes numerous Easter eggs that fans will appreciate.
The production values of the movie are superb, featuring a mix of practical and visual effects that bring depth to the Ghostbusters universe. Winston Zeddemore's company offers a blend of old and new equipment, along with Phoebe's unique technological creations. The props are meticulously designed and crafted to enhance visual aesthetics. The ghosts are a well-executed combination of computer-generated imagery and enhanced puppets. The cinematography, framing, and editing contribute to the film's atmosphere and energy. Composer Dario Marianelli delivers a score that pays homage to Elmer Bernstein's original composition while introducing new elements. The music complements the action, creates ambiance, and adds depth to the characters. And of course, no Ghostbusters movie would be complete without the classic theme song by Ray Parker Jr.
The original cast members have aged gracefully, and the screenplay caters to their strengths. Bill Murray remains eternally youthful, embodying an older version of Peter Venkman with the familiar snarky attitude. Dan Aykroyd exudes the wisdom of an old sage, Ernie Hudson grounds the group, and Annie Potts delights as a witty yet mellowed Janine Melnitz. Their combined presence transcends fan expectations.
Contrastingly, the Spangler family—composed of Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace—portrays a natural family dynamic. Paul Rudd tones down his performance from his Marvel character Scott Lang, resulting in a more genuine and organic comedic portrayal. However, the spotlight shines brightest on Mckenna Grace as Phoebe Spengler. She portrays a complex teenager grappling with various issues. Her character is fresh, intelligent, and sympathetic, clearly reflecting her lineage as Egon Spengler's granddaughter.
The latest installment in the Ghostbusters franchise, "Frozen Empire," surpasses the accomplishments of "After Life." It reunites the original cast and introduces new characters, resulting in an exciting adventure that also delves into the backgrounds of the characters, bringing them up to date. The movie sets the groundwork for the establishment of the "Ghostbusters Corps" through the character of Winston Zeddmore, broadening the universe and creating opportunities for future narratives. Given the popularity of episodic storytelling, it's plausible that a Ghostbusters spin-off series could emerge on streaming platforms if the fans turn out for this film. If not, there is likely at least one or two more films in the works.
Regardless, it’s an exciting and gratifying ride that I plan to take a few more times while in the theater. The anticipation and excitement that accompanies the thrill ride is palpable from the moment I step into the theater. The atmosphere is electric and charged with a sense of adventure that captivates me. As I settle into my seat, my heart races with anticipation, knowing that I am in for a wild and unforgettable experience.
GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE’s twists, turns, action and suspense left me exhilarated. The special effects create a vivid and awe-inspiring spectacle. The sights, sounds, and sensations all come together in perfect harmony, leaving me mesmerized and fully engaged. As the credits came to an end with a final musical touch of the Bernstein score I was left with a mix of emotions – a combination of exhilaration, satisfaction, and a lingering sense of wonder with a touch of sadness. As I left the theater, I carried with me the residual effects of the cinematic experience – a renewed sense of energy and a profound gratitude for the opportunity to have embarked on an extraordinary adventure with Ghostbusters young and old.
CAST: Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton. CREW: Director/Screenplay - Gil Kenan; Screenplay - Jason Reitman; Based on the 1984 film “Ghostbusters” an Ivan Reitman film written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis; Producers - Ivan Reitman, Jason Reitman & Jason Blumenfeld; Cinematographer - Eric Steelberg; Score - Dario Marianelli; Editors - Nathan Orloff & Shane Reid; Production Design - Eve Stewart; Costume Designers - Alexis Forte & Ruth Myers; Special Makeup & Live Action Creature Effects Designer - Arjen Tuiten; Special Effects Supervisor - John Van Der Pool; Visual Effects Supervisor - Geoffrey Baumann; Visual Effects - Clear Angle Studios, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Industrial Light & Magic, Barnstorm VFX & Territory Studio

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, the Spengler family returns to where it all started – the iconic New York City firehouse – to team up with the original Ghostbusters, who’ve developed a top-secret research lab to take busting ghosts to the next level. But when the discovery of an ancient artifact unleashes an army of ghosts that casts a death chill upon the city, Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their home and save the world from a second Ice Age.   Previously had a December 20, 2023 theatrical release before getting pushed to March 2024 due to the writers and actors strike. (7/28/23) Co-written and directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House, City of Ember, Poltergeist, A Boy Called Christmas). (12/6/22) Co-writer Gil Kenan gave a brief update on the project and what to expect, saying: "We’re writing as quickly as we can. We had the story before we finished Afterlife. And we have been crafting this with as much care as it took to build Afterlife into a worthy sequel." Adding that Ernie Hudson's Winston will have a much larger role this time 'round, saying: "The character of Winston Zeddemore and Zeddemore Industries figures strongly into the future of Ghostbusters." (7/5/22) Carrie Coon returns as Callie. Paul Rudd returns as Grooberson Mckenna Grace returns as Phoebe. Ernie Hudson returns as Winston. This project's codename is said to be "FIREHOUSE" which is an obvious reference to the original Ghostbusters HQ in Manhattan, which is also where this sequel is said to take place. While they haven't officially signed on yet, the main cast from the previous movie, including Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd are all expected to return. Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife) is back to co-write with Gil Kenan, but it's unclear at the moment if he'll also return to direct. Aside from this live-action sequel, a new animated Netflix series and an animated movie reportedly featuring all new characters is also in development. This is the latest sequel and fifth Ghostbusters movie overall (if you include the 2016 all female Ghostbusters). Sony Pictures releases Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in Theaters on March 22, 2024. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Bustin' Makes Me Feel Meh
The Spengler family returns to the iconic New York City firehouse where the original Ghostbusters took ghost-busting to the next level. When discovering an ancient artifact unleashes an evil force, new and old Ghostbusters must unite to protect their home and save the world from a second ice age.
Grab your proton packs and don your ecto-goggles, for we’re about to embark on a spectral adventure into the realm of cinematic disappointment that is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. Yet another relic from the nostalgia vault, this movie embodies the soulless cash-grab trend, where creativity is sacrificed at the altar of shallow fan service. Prepare to confront the epitome of corporate filmmaking, where originality is but a distant memory. So beware as we dive into the psychomagnotheric slime where even the best of Ghostbusters would struggle to exorcise the demons of disappointment.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire presents a muddled narrative grappling with its own identity crisis. Is it a coming-of-age family drama veering into queer-baiting territory? Or perhaps it aims to unravel the mystery surrounding its MacGuffin while attempting a "remake" of the beloved original? The truth: it attempts to juggle all these elements, resulting in a disjointed and overcrowded storyline that merely spins in circles. None of these subplots are allowed to breathe, failing to grasp the essence of what made the original Ghostbusters so memorable. The charm of the original Ghostbusters lay in its simplicity—a buddy comedy featuring friends embarking on ghost-busting escapades, inadvertently saving the world along the way. Yet, Frozen Empire is so fixated on the spectacle of ghostbusting that it neglects character development, relationships, and cohesive storytelling. The magic of the original, fueled by the chemistry among its cast and their impeccable comedic timing, remains sorely absent. While Afterlife at least attempts to capture the essence of the original, Frozen Empire loses itself in a flurry of special effects and forgets the heart that made Ghostbusters truly special.
Even the formidable ensemble cast couldn't salvage this movie from its shortcomings. Despite their commendable efforts, Paul Rudd and Carrie Coon valiantly endeavor to inject life into the script with their comedic flair and charm, yet their talents are ultimately constrained by the limitations of the material. Regrettably, they find themselves woefully underused, their potential squandered by the lackluster writing. Finn Wolfhard, on the other hand, feels like a mere afterthought, barely making an impression throughout the film. Mckenna Grace, while giving her all, struggles to recapture the brilliance she displayed in Afterlife, hindered by a shallow teen angst subplot that fails to do justice to her talent. The stark contrast between her character here and her previous role makes it challenging for her to fully immerse herself. However, when Dan Aykroyd graces the screen, his infectious enthusiasm is palpable. His genuine enjoyment of the material shines through, infusing his performance with a sense of joy that is contagious. Similarly, Patton Oswalt's portrayal of the enthusiastic librarian exudes a genuine passion for the role, adding a spark of excitement to his scenes. Their enthusiasm serves as a bright spot in an otherwise lackluster cinematic endeavor.
Regrettably, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire falls short of capturing the magic that made the original 1984 film a timeless classic. Instead of prioritizing storytelling and character development, it becomes fixated on the superficial allure of ghostbusting spectacle. Ironically, the movie dedicates only two scenes to actual ghostbusting—the opening sequence and the belated appearance of the villain in the final act, a staggering 85% into the runtime. While there are sporadic moments of enjoyment and a nostalgic nod to the practical effects of the original, they are sadly insufficient to elevate the film beyond its inherent mediocrity. In essence, it feels as though the movie would be better off consigned to the depths of a ghost compactor, destined to fade into obscurity for eternity.
