Oh, truly a treat for me! Is almost as if someone I know sent this in. Hmm so suspicious haha.

Originally I had something a little different going on for this one, but I decided to scrap it and include a few other personal hcs of mine that I haven't gotten to introduce yet. Like the migraine thing. Not to project, but you cannot tell me that Aizawa doesn't get ocular migraines. The man's quirk is focused on his eyes for goodness sake. (And because of my own migraines, there was a lot of heavy editing and mixing and matching my notes from last week that actually made sense, so sorry about the delay and if this seems a little off.)

Also!! Very very excited to include Nemuri! She's one of my favorites and I haven't really gotten to do much with her beyond mention her here and there in a couple other posts. So it was so nice to be able to give her more focus—she deserves it! I think she would be a really awesome cg, because we've seen how deeply she cares about people and watching them grow emotionally, so it tracks that regression would be a coping mechanism that she really supports.

Very gently, Shouta smoothed his hand into the small of Midoriya's back. He tipped the boy forward, onto his hands and knees, on the carpet. When the little thing stared up at him, Shouta patted Izuku's head and crossed the room, to the snacks.

Shouta crouched down behind them, his hands open to receive him.

“Midoriya,” he called. “Midoriyaaaa…”

Midoriya tilted his head.

“You know what to do, Midoriya,” Shouta encouraged. “Come to Papa please.” -- One of Aizawa's friends just had a child. Watching the happy new parents stoked Aizawa's parental instincts. But Aizawa's a loner; he's more likely to become the next prime minister than to father a kid of his own. Then one afternoon he sees Izuku behaving oddly, and everything clicks into place.

“You guys wanna see my baby?”

Now, times might’ve changed, but neither Sam nor Mike had forgotten who they were talking to…so they were more than just a little hesitant to see whatever ‘baby’ Josh seemed so invested in.

Ashley had always had her words, Chris had his spatial awareness, and Josh? Well Josh…Josh was a builder. A creator. Saying ‘artist’ was maybe a step too far, going out on a limb a bit too shaky to support weight—the things that came out of his mind were usually much too bloody to be considered ‘art.’ But they were something, all right. They were…something.

They were not particularly excited to follow him out to the garage, was the moral of the story. In fact, it was almost as though all those old, forgotten instincts had kicked back on with the force of a jet engine, turning their blood to cold fire in their veins. Still, lunch had been…okay (awkward, sure, strange, sure, but okay), and they were both at least reasonably sure they wouldn’t be walking into an out-and-out murder den, so…so they followed.

To see the baby.

“See, one of the biggest problems with horror today,” Josh was saying, continuing the monologue he’d started as they’d finished the last of their lunch, sounding every inch the same as he had a decade ago, “Is that people rely wayyy too much on CG shit. And like, sure, use that crap when you need it, right? But don’t rely on it, that’s the fastest way for you to fuck yourself. Nah, practical effects are where it’s at. The Thing? Eraserhead? Shit, even Jurassic Park, look at that. That’s the stuff that sticks with people! The shit that looks real because it is.”

From just in front of them, Sam watched Chris and Ashley catch each other’s gaze, roll their eyes, snicker. Chris raised one of his hands and flapped his fingers like the mouth of a sock puppet until Ash bumped him with her hip.

“So you bet your ass we’re making a concerted effort to go back to those days. The days where effects were actual—” Josh paused before opening the door, fixing Chris and Ash with an exasperated stare. “You two done, or…?”

“It’s just precious when you get all obsessive,” Ashley joked, reaching up to playfully pinch his cheek. She pulled away just as he went to bat her hand from his face, suddenly the leader of their expedition. There was a click, a buzz, and then lights flickered on to reveal the interior of the garage.

Life was weird, Sam thought. Life was really fucking weird. Ash sure hadn’t thought it was ‘precious’ when Josh’s obsession had been building a murder house to torment them in. How was it, exactly, that things could change so much while simultaneously staying the same? What even was that? She didn’t get to dwell on that for too long.

The garage was hotter than the rest of the house had been, the air heavy with a faintly chemical smell that brought to mind shop class and a photography darkroom all at once. It looked…well, not to put too fine a point on it, but it looked like a goddamn charnel house, shelves piled high with body parts and vats of…she didn’t actually want to consider what was in the vats. Heads, arms, legs, bones, things that were probably meant to look human, things that absolutely did n—

“No,” Sam said, the word out of her mouth before she even realized she was talking. “No. Nonono.” Her arms seemed to fling themselves into the air, her entire body frothing with adrenaline. She’d only seen it from the corner of her eye; she hadn’t turned, hadn’t gotten an actual look at it, but that was enough. That was more than enough. In a heartbeat, maybe less, she was on the other side of the threshold again, standing in the frigid air of the a/c.

“Sammy!” Josh sounded disappointed, but that was absolutely not his main emotion. If she had to name that, she thought it would have to be delight. “Come on.”

Mike was next to her again, seemingly teleporting straight out of the garage to join her. His face had gone white as marble, and unless she was imagining it, Sam thought she detected the slightest tremor in his hands. “Fuck no.”

That time Josh laughed the good ol’ belly laugh they remembered so well. “I’ll take that as a compliment! Realism is, after all, what we aim for here at Hidden Basement Studios.” He turned to the other two, shrugged, waved to one of the shelves. “Show ‘em one of the hands or something,” he sighed, sounding not at all put-out. “There’s no accounting for taste,” he added under his breath, reaching up to adjust…something on the horrible, lanky thing looming in the corner.

And true to form, Ash brought over a monstrously familiar thing—a glove she slipped on to show them how cool it was, how realistic, that the actor wearing it would still have full articulation of all five fingers despite them being so long, so narrow; that even though the nails capping each finger tapered into a talon making them seem that much longer, it was still light enough that it was nearly unnoticeable.

Mike and Sam didn’t hear a word of it. Not a single, solitary word.

From that angle, they couldn’t see the thing in the corner, the thing Josh had been so excited to show them, the horrendous creation of resin and foam latex and whatever the fuck else it had taken. They didn’t need to see it. They knew it was there and that was more than enough.

If there was anything Josh was good at, it was his props. It was a talent—a gift, some might say—but nothing about that skeletal monstrosity was good or right. Accurate? Oh, it was accurate. It was fucking accurate, to be sure.

Her throat too tight and her head too shaken up to get hung up on things like politeness, Sam cut Ashley off mid-finger-bending-demonstration. “How…” she started, her voice (and breath) catching at the spot just past her soft palate. “How do you guys live with…that…in the house?”

Josh snorted. “Aw c’mon, don’t be that way Sammy! Already told you—” He paused just long enough to turn, giving the hunched form’s head a delicate pat. The motion was enough to make the great, milky bulbs in its eye sockets gleam as they caught the overhead lights. “It’s my baby.”
