A/N: it’s finally here! My heart needed this fluffy fic so I indulged, the characters took me in ways I didn’t see coming so it took me a little bit longer to post (this was supposed to be the first fic I posted here, but inspiration hit with the birthday fics lol.) I didn’t want any angst but still, some happy tears are shared between them.

The memories imprinted on the photo albums never failed to bring a genuine smile to his face and make him reminisce; not even the dust that tickled his nose could ruin these types of moments. He flipped through the well-worn pages, letting memories wash over him. He knows he has changed a lot through the years, but his essence is still palpable somehow; nonetheless, he doesn’t feel the need to alter anything about his personality. He’s loved by the people around him and, for once, he is comfortable and happy with the person—he has come to admit—he has surrendered his heart to.
He smiled, wondering how it would have been if they had met as toddlers, maybe at kindergarten or at school, and gone on beach trips with friends during the summer. His smile would have brightened even more just by seeing you posing beside him, poking his dimples as you are already so used to doing. Kyungsoo just knows deep in his heart that you would love what he’s been planning; he can’t let that little evil voice of doubt and insecurity win this one. You are clueless so far about his plans, but hints from you have also been received and thought through, so that’s what moved him to plan his proposal for moving in together.
“Kyungsoo, son.” He heard his mother’s voice calling from the kitchen, snapping him out of his daydream.
He followed the sound of her voice, appearing quicker than she had expected, causing her to jump in surprise. “Sorry, mom!” he exclaimed, letting out a chuckle as he approached, eager to taste the Yukgaejang, whose enticing aroma had already made his stomach growl.
“Hands off!” his mother scolded him. “I can’t let you get creative with Yukgaejang; your father likes it this way.”
He only continued to chuckle at his mother’s expression as he remembered the last time he tried and failed, earning him a week of an indescribable, odd-tasting soup. Teenager Kyungsoo would have likely tricked you into tasting it as a prank, just to have an excuse to be together in the nurse’s office, but he would have completely regretted his antics the moment he came to realize he liked you.
“Do Kyungsoo, did you hear what I said?”
“Oh, sorry, mom, need any help? Sorry, what did you say?”
Because of his giggles and daydreaming, he could have been doomed at that moment had his mom not been aware of the reason why he was behaving that way, so she only continued to give him the banchan she had served for him to set on the table.
“Have you decided which photos to take with you already?” his mom wondered, noticing the albums on the sofa before she sat down to eat with her youngest son, who was visiting for the day with a peculiar excuse.
“There are a lot. You can tell me which ones you want to keep, and I’ll choose from the rest.”
“It’s okay, you can take as many as you want.” She paused to think. “But do leave me the one from kindergarten where you have that big smile of yours; I don’t get to see it often.”
“Mom, I do smile!” Kyungsoo protested, perplexed at his mother’s bluntness but still amused.
“I know, I know,” she giggled. “It’s only directed to a specific someone nowadays.” And just like that, she delivered her last joke, playfully teasing her son just a bit more.
“Mom!”
The way his eyes widened in surprise amused her so much that she couldn’t help but burst into laughter. “I love Y/N! I truly do, but you don’t visit us as frequently as you used to,” she revealed, honestly.
Kyungsoo put a piece of haemul-pajeon on his mother’s rice at the same time that he offered her the smile she missed. “Ok, I’ll try visiting you more.”
Content with her son’s actions, she continued to eat the seafood pancake with a smile on her face. “Bring Y/N with you too; I miss our drama marathons,” she encouraged.
“I’ll sure do, mom.”

“Oh, they’re here!” You glanced toward the front door, leaving the cookie dough unattended as you rushed to the entrance to let your little guests in.
Kyungsoo chuckled as he witnessed your surprising speed. He went to check on the dough to see if he could help you in any way; he is the one that’s mostly in the kitchen, whether it’s yours or his, but you specifically told him not to do anything since you wanted to share this new recipe with him.
“Uncle Kyungsoo!” your older niece shouted out as soon as she saw him. He waved at her and she ran to embraced him. “Are you making cookies? Can you make them blue like you did last time?”
The shower of questions gave him away, so he tried to plead innocence by giving you an honest smile, which only grew bigger as he saw your two adorable twin nephews next to you. They both happily ran to hug Kyungsoo’s legs.
“I swear I didn’t change or touch anything.”
His ears could have burned to the touch, even when he was telling half the truth, because he indeed didn’t do anything—only thought about it, and got very close to tasting the cookie dough.
“I know those eyes, what are you hiding?” You squinted at him.
“Is it safe to leave my kids with you two?” your sister joked as she closed the door at a dramatically slow pace.
“Ari, he’s hiding something, right?” you kept teasing.
“I’m not.” Kyungsoo couldn’t stop his laugh. It could have given him away, but you know the nuances in his expressions too well. Also, it’s a given that he wouldn’t have had enough time to change anything.
“I’ll give you one chance; you can add one ingredient that you think could make it better.” His smile was like a reward. “He’s been pretending to keep himself busy while I’m making cookies,” you explained the context of the situation before you.
“Kyungsoo-ssi, you’re a chef, and isn’t today your free day?” your sister asked.
He only giggled and proceeded to taste the dough as everyone in the room expected his feedback; even your twin nephews paid attention, probably expecting a taste too.
He surprised himself; it was hard to tell, but there was some kind of ingredient that his palate was enjoying but couldn’t quite figure out because of the sweetness of the sugar and the distinctiveness of the vanilla extract present in the mixture.
“Are these chocolate chips?” he asked once he realized where the new flavor came from. There was a sweet flavor there that just didn’t taste quite like chocolate.
“Nope, they are dulce de leche chips; Ari’s friend makes them.”
Kyungsoo was incredulous but mostly confused. “Uncle, you don’t know what dulce de leche is?” your niece asked even more incredulously than him, making everyone laugh.
At that moment, your nephews started to build up energy and tried to climb up to Kyungsoo’s arms to see what he was eating. It had taken a long time for them to turn hyperactive, but they had been too entertained with his bunny slippers before. Kyungsoo managed to lift both of them to help them grab some chips from the bag that your niece pointed at and let her grab a bunch first.
“Remember the Latin American Festival we went to a couple of weeks ago? We tried dulce de leche with those small crumbly cookies.”
“Oh oh oh, yeah, I remember now. Mhmm, this is good, so good. I’m not doing anything; you even added sea salt, right?”
“Yeah, of course I did!”
“Well, I’m sorry to be a party pooper, but I must leave now,” your sister announced.
“Come kiddos, say goodbye to your mom!” Kyungsoo took them to their mom, but the older one started crying, realizing his mom was leaving. He jumped on his mother as soon as he was close, and it wasn’t long before the little one started crying too.
Your niece approached to try to calm her brothers, but you remembered you had just the thing to distract them so your sister could leave.
“Let’s go play in the camping tent; there are tons of balls to play with,” you told your niece so she could help you convince her brothers since they follow her lead all the time.
“Yes! And can we have ice cream?” She got all of the adults to laugh yet another time, but at least she managed to lessen the crying and desperation so your sister could talk to them and remind them that she needed to go for a while and that she was coming to get them later.
“I’ll go get the ice cream,” Kyungsoo offered. “I can accompany you downstairs.”
“Thank you, Kyungsoo-ssi. You’re so kind.” Your sister accepted his help as she put your nephew on the floor so you could take them to the camping tent you set for them to play in.
Kyungsoo led your sister outside after he took his wallet to go buy ice cream for everyone staying in your apartment.
In the elevator, silence fell, but for the generic music coming from the speakers. Kyungsoo spoke first, "thank you in advance. This means a lot to me."
“You’re so sweet; nobody has ever done anything like this. Y/N loves you like crazy, I can assure you of that, it would totally be the best surprise.” She searched in her bag for an envelope and handed it to him. “This should help with your plans.”
“In exchange, I will take good care of your kids, I promise,” he assured her as he held the envelope and handled it with so much care.
“Of course, you two are a great team. You always do a great job!”
While Kyungsoo went for ice cream, you were doing your best to distract the kids. The twins were like the moon and the sun, so the easier task was to leave your niece to play with the youngest in the tent while you tried to control the middle one, who was throwing the balls and even the toys at your sofa. The space in your living room where you placed the tent expanded to the whole house in about two minutes; all of the toys and balls were all over the place.
Luckily, you had finished the dough and were able to refrigerate it before the baking process, ensuring the mixture remained untouched by the Poké Balls flying about. This allowed you to attend to the children on your own until your boyfriend returned from the store.
You didn’t even need to get your camera to recollect the evidence for your sister because she knew her kids. However, you still took some pictures with your phone to send them to her, as you caught the kids’ enjoyment when they started playing together.
As you were writing to her, your phone rang with a video call from Kyungsoo, and as soon as the kids heard his voice, they all came running to say hi to him. He let out a quick giggle while his cheeks turned red. He hadn’t expected to have so much noise coming from his phone at the convenience store; he even bowed at some people behind the camera, apologizing.
“You can turn it to just a voice call if you feel more comfortable that way,” you suggested once the kids went quiet, expecting to see what their uncle was going to show.
“It’s okay; it’s quick. Just wanted to show these two options I had in mind for the kids.”
“They love the cookies and cream Seoleim—“
“Oh, but I want the banana one,” your niece expressed, creating a double echo from the little ones.
“Uncle, banana,” said the youngest, making Kyungsoo giggle.
“I can bring both, and do you want some vanilla ice cream to eat with the cookies?”
“You’re a genius!” you smiled. “Thank you, jagi.”
Kyungsoo mirrored your smile and waved goodbye. “See ya all soon!”
It didn’t take long for him to come back, so he got to see the chaos you got caught in again when he arrived. He ran to the kitchen before he was trapped by the kids at the entrance, and he gave them their ice cream fast enough for them to run back to you. Kyungsoo quickly hid the envelope in his jacket and put the vanilla ice cream in the fridge to eat later with the cookies. Since it was relay time, it was easier for him to hide the surprise with his belongings when you came to the kitchen to finally start to bake.
Taking care of your niece and nephews was challenging; Kyungsoo couldn’t even lie to himself that it wasn’t, but they were quite adorable and funny. You’ve been doing this for longer than he has, so it seemed to be so easy for you when he first saw you interact with the kids. However, he has worked on it and gotten to improve fast. Such as when your nephew started a tantrum because he wanted to go out to play but Kyungsoo saw it was about to rain. You came into the room to help, but he waved off your help, determined to handle it himself.
With them, he had learned to let loose and have fun, even if he had to act cute or like a clown. Who would have thought he could pull out some moves? Singing was easier, and karaoke rooms were witnesses to that, but he learned to accept that dancing was also fun, and he really wasn’t bad at it. It could be that or the opposite, but your nephew’s laugh was a reward either way.
For you, it was not just the little one’s laugh but Kyungsoo’s enjoyment. His face shone so much when he smiled, and his big eyes turned into little half-moons of joy. You instinctively grabbed your camera and caught as many of those moments as you could. The peace and comfort that he transmitted were priceless. You were happy that it didn’t take too long for you to finish setting the cookie dough to bake because you got to join them just in time, joyful to be able to catch more of Kyungsoo’s dancing and silliness with the kids.
At the end of the day, once you bid farewell to your sister and her children, reality hit you in every cell of your body. The exhaustion from playing all day, cleaning ice cream from the floor and carpet, cooking, and feeding left your muscles aching. You knew you now had to clean up your apartment, but leaving it all for the next day seemed more appealing than tiring yourself more by tidying it up.
While you were going back up to your apartment, Kyungsoo was picking up the toys that the kids left unorganized. Your sister had tried to get them to pick up everything they played with before they left, but you let them go easily since they seemed to be about to fall asleep in seconds.
You contemplated him once you entered your apartment; he was only bringing up smiles from you lately. “I can clean up tomorrow. I’m too exhausted now, aren’t you too?” you asked.
“I am,” he giggled, but he kept picking toys up from the ground. “I wanted to help.”
“You work tomorrow; rest up,” you said gently as you approached him, until you wrapped your arms around him from behind and rested part of your weight on him.
He stopped, feeling your energy drop. “I’m okay; I’m used to being tired from running the restaurant all day.”
“It was your free day today, though. I made you work too much. Kids and food are not the same.”
“Yeah, they’re not,” he recognized and looked back at you from his shoulder.
You smiled at him and managed to grab his hand. “See, just come with me. Let’s just chill for now. Let’s watch some variety shows and rest,” you suggested as you guided him to the couch and then grabbed the remote to turn the TV on.
You found a traveling variety show you hadn’t seen before, and it got you interested. The hosts were indulging in many unfamiliar and mouthwatering dishes, catching Kyungsoo’s attention. It didn’t take long for you both to get lost in the scenery and seemingly delicious food they showcased, and your exhaustion finally kicked in as you started to feel your eyelids getting heavy.
“Come closer; you can rest your head on my shoulder,” Kyungsoo whispered, and you followed his instructions. He was too content and expectant already. His smile, if only you could see it, might have given something away. His eyes, illuminated by the light of the TV, were incredibly expressive. “You did well today; I enjoyed every single minute,” he continued whispering, gently stroking your hair. All the while, he purposefully concealed that smile and look from you.
“I did too.” You gently grabbed his hand, and he squeezed lightly.
“You can sleep,” he giggled softly. “I can feel you drifting away.”
“No, I’m okay. Got to be here with you until you have to go.”
Kyungsoo knew you were tired, but he was sure something in the tone of your voice sounded different, and he couldn’t ignore the sense of urgency it conveyed. Although he had already planned to stay to surprise you, the change in the way you talked made him more determined to be there for you.
“I can stay; take the day off tomorrow and stay with you,” he offered, without giving much away.
“You’re leaving the kitchen unsupervised?”
It seemed you were still trying to keep your humor up and that nostalgia or melancholy unnoticed, so Kyungsoo tried to keep it up too, saying, “yeah, I can. I’m the chef.”
“I don’t believe you.”
He giggled, seemingly more amused than he is used to, and planted a gentle kiss on the top of your head. “Believe me now?” he asked, his voice filled with playful affection.
“Don’t buy me with your sweetness!”
Like a defiant toddler, he didn’t listen and instead shifted his body to cuddle and have you wrapped in his arms. “I just want to cheer you up,” he murmured tenderly.
There was a pause in your reaction, and suddenly, you held onto his hand again. “How…” you began, your voice barely audible as it caught in your throat. The word trembled on your lips, reflecting a mix of curiosity, surprise, and perhaps even a touch of vulnerability.
“You don’t have to say it if you are not ready.”
“Soo—“
“Rest. I’ll get you to your room and leave if you fall asleep.”

That smell was familiar—the pungent, savory scent of kimchi fried rice—paradoxically evoking only good memories with the people you love. You even smiled before you could open your eyes, but curiosity quickly appeared when you realized you were supposed to be alone in your house at this hour in the morning. Your sister couldn’t have possibly come today after the news she got yesterday. It was the low humming accompanying the sizzling sound of the kimchi rice that made you jump out of bed. The bedsheets fell on the ground, almost making you fall, and the door made such a sound when it hit the wall that it made Kyungsoo jump. The mixture of emotions was a tiny bit overwhelming, but your smile gave away the happiness you felt by seeing him in your kitchen making breakfast.
“You’re awake.”
“You’re here!”
His shoulders slightly went up and down as he silently laughed, connecting his gaze with yours in a way only he could. Your feet were smarter than you, taking you to him to yet again hug him from the back, but this time sharing your happy morning energy with him.
“Careful, you can burn your hand,” he cautioned, moving you both away from the heat.
You pressed your head against his back, inhaling the lingering scent of his perfume on his shirt. “I have you here, so I don’t mind.”
“How can you not mind?” He was surprised by your reply. “It’s painful, and I don’t want you to get hurt. You might even get me to burn the rice, so move, please," he insisted.
You looked at him, squinting, because of his unbelievable-expected, hot and cold reply. His teasing was cruel sometimes, but it really only added to his adorableness. He also said please, so he is forgiven.
“So is this the kitchen you’ll run today?” You had your wits too, and you used them wisely.
“My yeobobangjang, help me out, please?”
“Yeobo?” you chuckled. You were amused by his accidental play with the words bujubangjang and yeobo. He can’t just deny his cuteness, and you couldn't help but be charmed by his playful antics.
"Yeah yeah... I did say that," he giggled, realizing that he had let it slip without much thought. He rarely calls you jagi or jagiya, but yeobo is a whole different level of endearment that you still didn’t expect to hear.
With your help, breakfast was ready a lot faster, allowing you both to sit down and eat together peacefully. It was not a special occasion to celebrate anything in particular, but simply having him there in front of you was enough to make you feel grateful and happy. You also knew that he needed an explanation about yesterday. He wouldn’t ask unless you took too long to say anything, but he would subtly check in to see if you were ready to let him know.
"Thank you, Soo," you said, offering a warm smile and a piece of gyeran-mari. "About last night—"
"Y/N, I don't want you to feel pressured into saying anything," he interrupted gently, his voice filled with understanding. "It's okay if you don't want to tell me. Just… just know that I'm here for you."
You shook your head slightly, trying to show him that you still wanted to share. That’s all you wanted to do last night when you went back to your apartment and saw him. “I’m okay. I was feeling just a bit… I don’t know, sad? Nostalgic, perhaps?” you explained, and you noticed how his eyes were focused on you and whatever you needed to say.
"When we were getting the kids into the car, Ari received a call. Jongseung's mom is sick and was taken to the hospital," you explained, pausing briefly. "I wanted to go with her, but she asked me not to. I felt so powerless in that moment. I think..." you trailed off. Sensing your pain, Kyungsoo reached for your hand across the table, offering as much comfort and support as he could.
"I was sad because it reminded me of mom. I hadn't even thought about her in so long," you confessed, as the emotions were building up inside you. "And then, I also thought about how much Ari took care of me after mom died. I always feel like I should repay her for all that she's done. So, I wanted to comfort her and go with her, or at least help her with the kids... but she just told me to go back home. She said she would update me when necessary."
Kyungsoo jumped off his seat to take the one next to you. He brought his bowl and chopsticks and placed them next to yours. As he settled down, he gently turned you to face him, taking hold of both of your hands. With a small smile and caring eyes, he said, “you do more than enough for your sister; she knows that. You are incredible, Y/N. I bet your mom would be so proud of the person you have grown into.”
The light in his eyes—you swear, it could warm you up for days with just one look. Being loved by him feels like peace and comfort; it’s exciting, and there’s fire and playfulness all at the same time. His kindness fills your heart with so much joy. The tears coming out were not just because of sadness but happiness because of having the best boyfriend in the world. You couldn’t even feel the cheesiness of that statement in that very moment, not when he was holding your every sorrow in the warmest embrace.
“Do you want to do anything today?” he whispered once you seemed calmer. “We can stay in, but if you want to go out, I will be more than happy to take you anywhere.”
“Did you really take the day off?”
Your curious question made him giggle. “Why so surprised? I’ve done it before,” he reminded you in his best attempt to hide his nervousness. Not that he is a workaholic or anything, but it was more due to the whole plan for the day and that he already wanted to tell you all about it.
You slowly let go of each other, and you just smiled at him, knowing how much he has done to schedule both of your lives so you can spend the most time together and never miss anything. It has also taken a lot of effort from you because both of your jobs have always been complicated with free time. “Let’s maybe go for something to eat for lunch; we can just cuddle until then,” you suggested while you held his cheeks and poked his dimples.
“What an adventurer, my love,” he joked at the same time that he carefully dried a couple of tears from your cheek, but he was the only one laughing when you playfully punched his arm. “I love it, I love it, I love you.”
“I love you, dumpling,” you exclaimed as you poked the dimple forming on his face.
“What?” His laugh echoed all over your apartment. “I haven’t heard you say that to me in so long!”
“What? Love you? Yeah… it’s been so long!” you said cheekily, but his antics still moved you, and you fought a smile by pouting.
“You dumb head!”
Your eyes widened at the audacity. “What did you just say?”
“You dumpling!” He also poked at your cheek.
“You didn’t sa—“ He cut you off with a kiss. You relaxed into it even when you wanted to just laugh out loud, but that translated into a smile, one that he mirrored while kissing you.
“We were eating,” he casually whispered while taking a small breath.
“We should probably keep doing so,” you whispered back, stopping him from getting any closer.
“Are you feeling any better?”
“Yeah, thank you.”
“Well, then you can do the dishes when we finish.”
“Yah! Do Kyungsoo!” You crossed your arms, pretending to be mad. “I’m only laughing because you are too. I love seeing you laugh. Also, thank you for cleaning yesterday’s mess, how’d you like to be rewarded?” you asked, teasingly moving closer, noticing your apartment being clean and all in order.
“Ahh stop,” he blushed, holding a giggle. You noticed him clearing his throat. “Let’s finish our breakfast.”
You often find yourself yearning for more mornings like this, with Kyungsoo playfully teasing you and your laughter filling the room. The idea of living together with him has crossed your mind from time to time, but you’re too hesitant sometimes, thinking too much if you’re in the right moment to take that step. You’re also guilty of letting other people own a place in your mind that tells you that it might be too soon, that you should possibly think about marriage first, and that settling down could mean risking your job and whatnot. Those voices really need to be quiet because you don’t see anything wrong with what you two have. Your job couldn’t possibly be jeopardized; two years of relationship is enough for you, and you’ve known him for almost five years already, so you might as well dive right in there and then.
It’s even funny how Kyungsoo is not worried about what to wear to go outside since he has at least five outfits in your apartment, even for someone who is quite simple when it comes to clothing. He even has one of his chef jackets and an apron for his uniform.
All of the getting ready went so smoothly that you could easily picture it all far ahead, but you were easily brought back to the present when you connected the dots of Kyungsoo wearing his faux leather jacket and gloves. You were seconds away from grabbing your camera from your bag and capturing that moment forever. It made sense in a way since you ended up cuddling and doing nothing for so long that you two ended up deciding to go on a picnic in the afternoon, so the jacket would serve well for the cold night, but the combination was surely making your heart flutter.
“What?” He turned around with a smirk on his face after grabbing his helmet. “Got yours too,” he said handing you the other helmet that was next to his.
“For a second, I don’t know why, I forgot you own a bike—a motorcycle type of bike.”
“You make no sense.”
“Never mind, let’s go.” Your thoughts were better kept inside your head, so you just put your helmet on and hopped on the bike. You felt the chuckle in his belly while you were trying to hold on tight. You always enjoy how comfortable he gets, but at the same time, he has made you blush way too much in just one day.
The change from summer to autumn felt more present in the past few days. The ride on the motorcycle exposed you even more to the change, as the weather was feeling nicer and you were not feeling like your head could burn from the heat inside the helmet. You held on even tighter and closer to Kyungsoo as you felt more comfortable along the ride. Somehow, you suddenly had flashbacks to the very first time you hopped on his motorcycle. You were just friends then, but now that you realize it, the feelings were catching up to you, and that was one of the first times that you thought about him differently.
You reached the first stop, which was his house, so he could leave his motorcycle parked. You had nothing really planned for the picnic, but you decided you were having it at Yeouido Hangang Park, so you would take the bus instead of worrying about parking. Kyungsoo had suggested the picnic and going to the Yeouido Bamdokkaebi Night Market, which surprised you a little, but it sounded great since you two hadn’t really had a cute romantic date in a while.
“Could you go pick up Meokmul and Hoochoo at the daycare?” Kyungsoo asked once he took his helmet off. You got lost in his eyes for a second, but then you noticed the ends of his hair were slightly damp and his nose was a little bit sweaty. He looked like his dogs, so you giggled.
“Y/N?”
“Oh, sure! Yeah, I’ll go.”
He shook his hair, hypnotizing you once more. You were completely lost and hadn’t even thought of fixing your own hair, but his hand found the rebellious lock on your left side and patted it back down. The proximity made you shiver, which made him giggle.
“Wait for me there; I’ll just go for my bus card and some stuff for the picnic.”
He dared to approach and give you a kiss on your forehead. Kyungsoo might have suspected it, but there was no denying that he had you eating from his palm from the moment you realized he had gone all bad-boy-look with his outfit today, just to match his motorcycle, just to tease you, just because—you wouldn’t know, but you’re more than grateful for the blessed view.

Haeun was at the reception today, so she waved at you with a wide smile on her face.
“Hey, Y/N! How have you been? Are you here to pick Hoochoo and Meokmul?”
You nodded happily, and when you reached the reception desk, you gave her your ID. “Haeun! It’s so nice to see you again. We’re taking them for a walk.”
Haeun’s eyes widened. She really was like a puppy taking care of a lot of other puppies. “Oh, they’ll be so happy! Come with me,” she invited, handing you your ID back after processing the discharge and calling a coworker in to take her place at the reception while you two went to get the dogs.
You trailed behind her as she led you down the hallway to the seating room, where the dogs' belongings were securely stored. "Hoochoo has been asleep for about twenty minutes now," she informed you, searching for the dogs' leashes. "Meokmul has been playing with Toben and Vivi," she added, providing you with an update on the dogs' activities.
“Oh, they’re here too?”
“Yes, she was lucky to have them here to play with. They’re really the best of friends.”
“Did Hoochoo have fun too?”
“Yeah, she played for a while but got sleepy after eating,” she giggled and pointed towards the playroom to let you know she was going in.
It was nice to hear that they were having the greatest time while you kept their dad away for a while. When you met them, there was an instant connection between the three of you. It had only taken a few seconds, and Meokmul was the first one to like you. Hoochoo was initially shy, requiring Kyungsoo’s gentle intervention to help the little puppy open up.
Funny enough, Haeun was the one who had introduced you to Kyungsoo when you coincidentally arrived at the same time to pick up your dogs. The three of them were harmoniously playing since they had already been friends for weeks. It just so happened that the owners hadn’t met yet. The bond that you all created was so strong that the loss of your dog two years ago was truly felt by them, but that only brought you closer to Kyungsoo and his dogs.
Meokmul had possibly smelled you or heard you because the barks in the distance were definitely too familiar. The little one ran towards you, making Haeun struggle a little with the leash, and the special treat you had taken from their bag didn’t help either. You showed it, and she ate it before you picked her up.
“I’ll go get Hoochoo with the carrier in case she’s still asleep.”
“Yes, thank you, Haeun!”
“Meokmul-ie, how are you? Hello, little sunshine!” You heard a chuckle behind you after cutely talking to the hyperactive dog on your lap. It was Kyungsoo, showing his most joyful smile. He was holding a little picnic basket, which made you wonder just how impromptu it would actually end up being. Knowing him, it probably didn’t even reach one percent.
“She woke up; she’s energized now, so—“ Haeun entered and stopped when she caught sight of Kyungsoo. “Oh, Kyungsoo-ssi! The two parents coming for their little girls; how cute!”
The both of you giggled and smiled at each other before bowing your heads to Haeun. “Thank you, Haeun-ah,” you said as you grabbed the double carrier and Kyungsoo took Hoochoo’s leash. “Let’s have a coffee together soon, yeah?”
“Welcome! We definitely should, just text me when you’re free. Have a nice day!”
“Enjoy your day, Haeun-ah!” Kyungsoo waved goodbye before he held your hand and led you outside.
The afternoon skyline was gorgeous, looking like the sunset was beginning soon enough. You contemplated it and squeezed Kyungsoo’s hand, to which he reacted with a chuckle. The reason was not important; just hearing that low, sweet chuckle of his was enough to make you feel all cozy and calm. You strolled along the sidewalk with your two beautiful dogs until you reached the bus stop, where you had to get the pups in the double carrier.
Kyungsoo scratched Meokmul behind her ear as she looked a little anxious. “It’s okay, it’s okay. Promise it won’t be long, little one.” He talked soothingly to calm her down.
He kept scratching her ear on the bus ride so she wouldn’t start barking nervously, and you gave her some treats to entertain her. Hoochoo received some too, but she was at ease in the carrier, all warmed up and happy with the company of Meokmul. The ride was indeed short, but Meokmul calmed down easily thanks to both of your calming attentiveness.
Once at Yeouido Park, you got both of them out of the carrier so they could walk along with you. Kyungsoo smiled at them and then at you. The picnic basket was on the floor next to the carrier, so the two little dogs couldn’t help but inspect it with their noses. “Ready for our date, little ones?” he chuckled.
Meokmul and Hoochoo barked as if they were answering him, waving their tails expectantly. You managed to take a picture of the three of them right in that moment, and when Kyungsoo looked back up, realizing you just took a candid photo, you said, “they know something’s up. What have you got planned, Soo?”
Kyungsoo’s eyes twinkled mischievously. “Ah, it wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you. For now, let’s walk; we’ve got some food to gather for our picnic.”
“So there’s nothing in the basket,” you commented suspiciously.
Kyungsoo only laughed, shaking his head as he took the dogs strollers in one hand while the other searched for yours. He squeezed once he held it gently, looking for something in your eyes that made him smile so brightly. You were curious now, but you decided it would be even more entertaining if you waited for whatever he planned for the night.
You set off down the busy lane with one pup each, Kyungsoo not letting go of the picnic basket, and you holding the carrier. The street food market bustled with delicious aromas and a lively atmosphere filled with people’s laughter and small chatter.
You stopped at a tteokbokki stand once the scent translated into flavor in your mind. The draw was so strong thanks to the warm feeling it gave you just thinking about the taste of the soft rice cakes in your mouth. You asked the vendor for a medium serving to take away, and Kyungsoo put it inside the picnic basket. It was hard not to peek, but he was too fast at closing the cover, nervously giggling.
A dumpling stand caught Kyungsoo’s attention; he approached and looked back at you, smiling knowingly. You immediately poked his cheek. “What do you think about these dumplings, Chef Do?”
“They look delicious, right?”
You marveled at his expression, reminiscing on your requested class all those years ago to your newfound friend, who looked at you amused at your concentration with his cheek full of dumpling flour. Kyungsoo’s weakness was food. “I do see one delicious dumpling,” you teased, holding his gaze with fire in your eyes.
The words caught up in his throat, so he swallowed thickly before his voice could come out shaky. His ears heated up, and he tried to look anywhere else. He still giggled, knowing you were taking your chance at teasing him, just like he did earlier when he knew you were staring at him with those dreamy eyes because of his choice of clothing.
Luckily, the woman serving the dumplings caught his wandering gaze and asked for his order; otherwise, he would have melted in front of you. After ordering two servings of dumplings, one steamed and the other fried, he managed to pull off a playful smile at your teasing words once his heart settled. He found your gaze still lingering, your eyes glowing with glee and something deeper; he could only hope it wasn’t just his longing playing tricks on him. All of the surrounding noise drifted away, and he found himself present with only you there in that moment.
He wished to reach for you and confess everything he had planned for the night, but his question still weighed with uncertainty and insecurities, so he needed a moment of complete confidence and the setting he had already pictured. The crowd would make him nervous even when no one paid the minimum attention to them. There were still some more steps to take to reach that longed-for destination.
Kyungsoo was more than reassured when he felt your hand on his arm. You didn’t have to say a word; the slight scrunch of your nose when you smiled and the warmth of your gaze calmed his anxieties. With you, he felt not only seen but understood—a comfort that had been hard to find all those years before you came into his life.
Too soon, the order was ready. With a kind smile and a bow to the sellers, he thanked them and packed away the dumplings. Hand in hand, you continued your wandering stroll along the market, picking whatever snack you desired. Since you found some fried chicken and already had tteokbokki, you two decided to pass by the convenience store and buy some ramyeon for the perfect food setting.
It didn’t take too long to reach the camping and picnic area once you had all of your food. Kyungsoo found a great spot near a tree, where you managed to settle before the last bits of light from the sun touched the sky. He had come prepared, as you had expected.
“Let me rearrange everything; close your eyes,” he asked you as you finished getting the little ones in their carrier since both of them were tired from playing all day and walking along the market with you two.
You were surprised to hear that since you two had already set the blankets on the grass, and he had taken out his wooden house-shaped lamp and put it next to the picnic basket. You still carried on, hopeful for his surprise.
After setting the folding table and carefully displaying the indulgently selected feast with flickering candle lanterns and fresh strawberries he had brought from home, he asked you to open your eyes again.
You swiftly opened your eyes, and they mirrored the light coming out of Kyungsoo’s as you traced over all of the little details and felt your heart warming up. “Soo, jagi, it’s beautiful,” you breathed. “It looks even more appealing now.”
Hoochoo’s head popped out of the carrier, hearing the both of you laugh together. She now looked hungry, so before you started on with your meal, you gave her some of hers. Meokmul was fast asleep, it seemed, but halfway through your dinner, she woke up asking for food.
With full bellies and hearts lighter, conversation turned reminiscent, noticing how many moments you had referenced from your friends to lovers relationship beginnings. Although short and recent, you managed to get enough closeness that led you to develop such strong feelings for one another. Kyungsoo knew it was time now that the momentum was clear with your talk being about you two.
The sweet and careful touch of his hand over your cheek soothed you into a pleasant mood, interrupting your giggles with his gesture. Whatever he needed to say or was thinking about, you lovingly gave him all of your attention.
“Y/N,” he started. “I have a surprise for you,” he smiled.
“Another one?” you genuinely asked, immediately interested in all of the possibilities.
He nodded. “You could say so, yeah.” His hand lingered on your cheek, but with a light stroke on your cheekbone, he shifted towards the picnic basket.
From an outside bottom compartment, Kyungsoo reached for a gift box, carefully handing it to you. He looked expectant as you grabbed it, the corners of his lips forming a slowly growing, hopeful smile. His features were divine, lighted up by the candle lanterns, and you couldn’t wait long to see what he was gifting you.
You looked at the photo on the cover; you captured that moment just a few weeks ago at Kyungsoo’s house. It had been such an ordinary day, but you had matched sweaters on, completely unintentional. Meokmul was on his lap, and you were holding Hoochoo, who licked Kyungsoo’s chin and made you laugh. The view of such a lighthearted moment, as well as your guess at what could be inside the book, brought happy tears to your eyes almost immediately. As you looked back at him, you caught a watery shine in his.
“Why am I crying? This is just the first look at your gift,” you sniffled.
Kyungsoo chuckled, amused at your reaction, but he embraced you to try and soothe your crying. “It’s okay if you cry; just promise it is out of happiness. My intentions were never to make you hurt.”
“It’s happiness; I’m excited to know what’s inside.”
Kyungsoo was already beaming at seeing you so moved by just the cover alone. He dried your tears and planted two kisses on your forehead. “Open it,” he urged softly. “I hope you like it. I tried to do the most I could within my creative possibilities.”
You giggled softly. “You are creative, mostly in the kitchen. You’re a genius chef, and I’m so lucky to have befriended you,” you advocated for him, honestly.
“Befriended,” he simply repeated and chuckled.
You continued to open the photo album, still wrapped in his arms. He wasn’t stopping his surprises, it seemed. The first two pages of the book had photos of both of you as kids; you could see why he chose those pictures, and the caption soothed you and filled you with so much gratitude and love for him.
Were we destined to find each other? Our connection seemed to exist earlier than we could imagine, no matter where we were.
His sweet smile was timeless. You could see yourself meeting Kyungsoo as a kid at that beach, running around and playing on the shore where small waves washed over your feet. It wasn’t the same one, but something in the pictures looked as if they were taken at the same place, day, and time.
“I saw that picture at Ari’s house a couple of months ago. Undeniably so, I knew I had seen something similar before. I had my picture at home, so when I returned that day and searched for it, I could only think about how many more could show such similarities,” Kyungsoo explained, talking near your ear.
You lifted your hand to caress his cheek. “You’ve been crafting this since then?” you asked.
“Not right then, but I had been looking for pictures, and then the idea came. Mom and Ari helped quite a lot,” he chuckled. “Just yesterday, I finally got your childhood pictures so I could add them.”
You kissed his cheek and continued to flip through the pages. Pictures of you two at different schools but with similar smiles, different cities but the same colors in the sky, different dogs but the same pose. Your lives seemed somehow planned and destined to blend; your eyes kept pouring down tears of joy when you reached the page where your early encounters started to appear—all those pictures you took.
A picture of you two at the first New Year’s party with his parents specially moved you. You were still just friends then, but he invited you over since he was also carrying out the first celebration at his new apartment.
You told me about your mom two days before, and I wished with you that she was there with us. But you must be her mirror; I can see her in you from the little details you’ve shared with me.
Kyungsoo held you tighter. He hadn’t anticipated in the planning and crafting of this gift that you could be sensitive about your mom on this day, so he consciously kept you wrapped in his arms. He felt how you squeezed back, embracing the reassurance he was trying to give you.
“Thank you, Soo,” you managed to say, but while it’d be easy for you to find words to express your feelings, this time there were not enough.
“Turn the page,” he said, his voice cracking. You moved to face him, and he smiled through the tears. “I have something to say,” he managed to speak calmly, in spite of his rushing emotions.
You followed through and flipped the page. A carefully crafted collage portrayed the photos you sent him—while you took care of Hoochoo and Meokmul, or just a nice picture of a sunset you saw—along with letters while he was enlisted and some of the ones you took on his day offs.
Kyungsoo took a deep breath, and you carefully held his hand. “I…” he started but stopped when he felt his tears coming down; you cleared them carefully and softly smiled. “That time of my life was hard to get through. I don’t think I thanked you enough for being there and all that you did for me.” He finally found the right words as he brushed his thumb over your hand.
“All those letters, all those pictures, all those moments you shared with me—you gave me the hope I lacked. I told you many times that I had fallen for you slowly and carefully, but it was on my mind every day,” he smiled tenderly. “You have no idea how much I love you. I learned to say whatever is on my mind because of you; if I hadn’t said those words to you, I probably would have lost you.”
You slowly shook your head. “No, I was too head over heels for you already. I wouldn’t have let you lose me.”
He giggled and kissed you softly, taking his time to marvel at this moment with you and trying to release the last of his nerves. “Could you take a look at the last page?” he asked, breaking away for a moment.
Eager to know what that last page offered you, you turned it over and smiled. The last picture, a copy of one of your photography class projects where you captured the concept of “home,” greeted you; it was Kyungsoo’s side profile while cooking in his restaurant’s kitchen. Next to it was a photo he had taken of the two of you when you visited his friends in Busan.
You looked up at him, wondering, searching for the answers in his joyful gaze. Kyungsoo held your hand at the same time that the two little pups woke up. Both of you couldn’t help but giggle, thinking they must have wanted to be a part of your moment, so you grabbed Meokmul, and he put Hoochoo on his lap.
Clearing his throat, he began, “Y/N, I’ve been thinking about this for awhile. Whenever I’m with you, no matter where we are, I feel at home. You are my home and safe place, and I want to have you as close as I can… would you like to start living together?”
He was a mind reader; you couldn’t help but reach to lovingly cup his face. Meokmul wanted her space with the two of you, so she started licking your hands and Kyungsoo’s cheek in the process. The both of you laughed while Hoochoo wagged her tail. “Of course, Soo!” you exclaimed between giggles.
When you could breathe easily and the pups calmed down a bit, you ran your fingers through his hair. “You’re also my home. You’ve loved every part of me, just as I have loved every part of you. Would you believe me if I told you I have also been thinking about it?”
His eyes widened, and a silly laugh escaped him. “I would actually believe it, but how are we so in sync?”
“I don’t want an answer; I just want us to keep working this way,” you admitted.
“You’re so wise,” he kissed your cheek. “Thank you; you’ve made all of my dreams come true just by being you. I can’t wait to wake up each day and see your beautiful eyes and fall asleep staring at them too.”
You pulled him close, softly brushing your lips against his; he placed his hand on your neck, his thumb slightly brushing your earlobe. Your lips met softly and slowly, making you feel at ease, like coming home—him—your home. “Thank you for loving me; it’s the greatest gift I’ve ever known.”

“The moments where common ingredients combine and mingle, and where they are newly born with different tastes, are fascinating and pleasant. The moments where I share this taste that I made myself with good people, are precious and joyful. To me, that is what cooking is. Mingling.” - Kyungsoo (Off The Grid, 2022)

Tumblr media
It’s been exactly 8 weeks since you stopped speaking with THE Do Kyungsoo.
Yes, you meant Do Kyungsoo the idol, the talented chef, the amazing singer and also THE best friend, not to mention THE imbecile.
Silent treatments, were a common occurrence especially with the stubbornness you both shared when it comes to giving in for the greater good. However this was the longest period of silence that you both had gone through and frankly for you, there’s no room for truce.
The reason behind it couldn’t be more trivial.
Three weekends before, you had gone on a blind-date with a mutual friend, both of you were set-up by one of your colleagues. The date went smoothly, he was a polite gentleman who offered to pick you up and took you home. Before the date, he asked about your food preference too, in which you appreciated the gesture. Overall, he’s an all rounder and you’re totally sure you’d like another date with him, even if both of you weren’t looking for anything serious. It was just nice to have someone to spend your weekend with.
You were astounded to say the least, that the  very nice gentleman sent you a set of fine bone china mugs with penguins on them, your favourite animal, duh. He also sent a letter, mentioning your love for coffee and penguins and how he’d thought of you when he came across the mugs a while ago. He wished that you would use the set to enjoy your morning coffee every morning.
On a given Sunday, Kyungsoo was supposed to come over to your place for a playdate since you haven’t seen each other in forever. He arrived with groceries and snacks for a pasta cook-out, he always mentioned that you were always too thin and too cold for his liking–that’s why he’s always so keen to feed you delicious and nutritious meals, even though you really didn’t like eating in general.
You both settled on the dining table with each a cup of tea in hand and a plate of cookies that he’d baked beforehand, they were oatmeal and vanilla almond- with the least amount of sugar, suited to your liking.
After a much needed catch-up session and a plate with nothing left more than cookie crumbs, you helped him prep the ingredients for his anchovy pasta. In which, you chose to casually slip the bomb of ‘I’ve met a nice guy, we had a couple of dates, he was such a gentleman, he even gave me these super cute mugs.’
At your narrative, Kyungsoo replied with soft hums and nods before replying, “You know y/n— I really think he might be taking advantage of you.” He nonchalantly said while stirring the fettuccine, calmly raising the pasta strands with a fork to check how they’d cook through.
“W-what? Where did that come from?”
“Why else would he be showering you gifts like these?” He waved around the penguin mug in front of your face in an irritating manner.
You gasp at his groundless accusation, “Soo! He’s clearly just being a nice- decent human being! How could you accuse him of such things?!”
You were literally in disbelief. Your best friend was usually the logical one in the friendship and having him belittle a guy like this, left you perplexed. He had no reasons whatsoever to insult a stranger, more so-your date.
The timer rang before he had a chance to reply. In his relaxed composure, he turned off the stove and strained the pasta, moving them to the pan next to it. He continued cooking for a while, mixing the fettuccine with the pan-seared anchovies and tomato. If you haven’t been friends with him for all these years, you would probably be left speechless at how he just left you mid-conversation to tend to his cooking- but here you are, still amazed at how engrossed the man is in finishing his dish before anything else. He added the last touch of basil before facing his back to the kitchen counter as he faced you with a judging look, crossing his arms in front of his chest.
“Y/n… You really are gullible sometimes, huh? He gave you a set of mugs and now you’re so swooned that you’re defending him? Over me- your best friend?” He half mocked you and rolled his eyes, giving off a much less of a smirk.
“W- what?! I am not! I can’t believe you right now? Can you hear yourself and how ridiculous you’re being right now?”
“Me? Ridiculous? What’s so ridiculous about protecting a best friend from strangers she just met!?” He exclaimed, shoulders shrugging showing his indifference.
“He- he’s not a stranger! I told you! Why can’t you be happy that I had a good date?” You sassed back.
“I’m a man and I can see right through him! He’s just a jerk wanting a hookup from you!” He raised his voice.
“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me!” You barked at his accusations.
“I got a nice date once and suddenly I’m gullible?” Anger seeping through your every word. You weren’t thinking clear anymore, all you see was red, you can feel the rage rising in the back of your head,
“You know what Soo? I’m sorry! I’m so fucking sorry that you’re jealous- and so fucking sorry for you because your glamorous idol life left you love deprived!”
The damage was done. You’ve said it and now you only wished you could take it back. You stopped yourself as you covered your foul mouth with regret. Your eyes were shaking as you looked at him with remorse.
He stared back at you, eyes unmoving. He was sometimes unreadable like this. It was in his character really, the unpredictability and the stealth gaze, often left you wondering what’s going on inside his head. He clicked his tongue once, enough to startle you and diverted your whole attention to him. He hummed, another habit of his. You mentally braced yourself for the storm coming.
“Love deprived?” he darkly chuckled, your penguin mug on the counter, under his hold.
“That’s the lowest you could do?” His smirk wiped away from his face as he gave a flat expression while pushing the mug away from the counter with force.
The scene flashed before your eyes, the penguin-faced mug hitting the floor, the clashing sound of china in contact with the marble floor rang through your ears. You gasp in shock as the mug shattered in pieces and there was nothing you could do but stare at the once cute cup.
You had your mouth hanging open- speechless, unaware that you were shaking. The crime scene unveiling in front of you left you appalled and you wondered if this person is the best friend you’ve always known your whole life.
“Shame. You could’ve done better Y/n,” he pauses, “Maybe you’ll realise that you have better options than Mr. Penguin Mugs.”
Your body kept shuddering as you tried to gain composure,
“Get out.” You trembled.
“Two can play a game, Y/n” His voice taunting yet his face stoic, staring at you.
“Out!” you screamed at him
So much emotions were whirring inside of you that your eyes water. Anger? Yes, a lot of rage was brewing in you but disappointment and sadness was an understatement.
“WHO the hell are you and what have you done to Kyungsoo!” Your sudden voice must’ve taken him by surprise as his eyes were back to normal, you walked up to him hitting his chest with little to no energy,
“I don’t want a fucking asshole as a friend! You’re not welcome here!”
If you were angry seconds ago, now you feel like crying.
“Leave!” as you pointed at the door, gesturing him to leave.
Kyungsoo bent down to pick up remnants of the penguins face, slowly placing them on the counter, like it could change a thing.
His next action took you by surprise as he scooped the rest of the broken china with bare hands to throw the shards to the nearest bin, hurting himself in the process. You found that a bit later though, when a drop of blood stain was evident on the lid of your trash can.
He exhaled a breath, “Eat. Do not skip meals. Don’t be stupid. Call me when you stop being foolish.”
You wordlessly trembled, standing with no more energy in your figure as he exited your apartment.
Ever since the messy encounter with him 8 weeks ago, a lot had changed.
You stopped contacting Mr. Penguin Mugs a week after your fight with Kyungsoo, you just didn’t have the heart to deal with the lovely man and it broke your heart (a little) that you threw away the chance to be with a nice guy. But a certain someone did fill your thoughts during that time, a certain imbecile with heart-shaped lips that you would really like to hate.
Again, you had your fair shares of silent wars with him but this one hurts the most, or at least your pride did. You could recall his last memo of him, asking you to not skip meals but you decided that Do Kyungsoo was not the boss of you. You didn’t care, you weren’t gonna listen to him.
The fight did trigger you and even though it was childish of you to purposely skip meals, you began to refrain from eating at all. In the back of your head, you knew better than this, you were better than this, however without Kyungsoo by your side to aid you, you faltered.
In the past years, you had a history with disordered eating. Coming from an almond-mum and a Korean all girls school, appearance was something vital to maintain, yet it resulted in you finding ridiculously dangerous ways to abstain yourself from eating.
It was a rough patch but all those years, Soo was there for you. He’d do the cooking, the persuading and the gentle praising, making sure he won’t overwhelm you. Kyungsoo might seem reserved and unreadable at times but he was full of care, too much even- to the point that you felt like a walking ‘handle-with-care’ sticker.
After you recover, you’ve managed to fix your relationship with food a bit better but there are times where the wounds would open up. You haven’t relapsed in a long time now, having to attend coaching sessions for healthy intuitive eating programs and having Soo on the sidelines to support you.
Nevertheless, your relapse now was justified that at this point you were blinded by hurt. You were in pain and no one was there to aid you this time.
It doesn’t take a genius to figure that the constant meal skipping would lead to fatigue, weight loss and eventually malnutrition, which is exactly what you’re suffering right now. The worse thing than losing your best friend is this, but hey you’re experiencing both of them at the same time! In your defense, you did try to get better, drinking spinach juice to try to fill the anguish hunger in your stomach, just to throw it all up again.
Honestly back then, when you experienced disordered eating, spinach juice was your holy grail that kept you full for longer hours without having to physically chew anything. Yet as your metabolism went to shambles, your body wouldn’t cooperate with any of the food you intake.
Kyungsoo wasn’t doing any better.
Seconds after he looked at your startled face and stepped foot out of your apartment, he wished time travel existed. He admits that he was an asshole but he didn’t mean to get things that far and he’d say those things to protect you even though he failed to project them in a nicer-manner (which was totally why he’s at fault, he knows this too-by the way). He wanted to apologise the next day-though he thought that giving you space would be a better option as he was scared to hurt you further. What he didn’t expect was the silence that went on for weeks.
Kyungsoo busied himself, he had his filming schedules packed as tight as possible and he picked up projects like they were cherries on trees. Even the members were astonished when he brought up his contract to join a variety show, which was so unexpected of him.  All the time not talking to you left him confused, if he was really trying to protect you or if he was jealous of you, or your date. He tried brushing it off, but you were always on the back of his mind. He’d try figuring out how he feels about you but that would spiral in a worse direction, he didn’t have the heart to admit that he misses you, his best friend.
On the sixth-week mark of your cold war, you were admitted to the hospital for severe malnutrition and extreme weight loss. Chanyeol was the one who hospitalised you.
Chanyeol—who became friends with you because of Kyungsoo–had visited you a couple times after the fight to check up on you. You wanted to turn your back on him and his hospitality but the friendly man with cute giant ears was so hard to refuse.
Initially, Chanyeol’s visit were out of concerns due to the fight you had with Kyungsoo, but the visits became frequent when he noticed you became leaner by the day, your moves were slower and it was visible that performing simple task were difficult for you.
He tried his best to discreetly offer professional help, even though he wasn’t aware of your disordered eating history, he simply wanted to help without offending you, in which you declined politely, saying you were fine.
That day, even with arduous attempts to conceal your weakness, your body soon gave up after opening the door for Chanyeol. Given your conditions, you had no room to refuse anymore as Chanyeol carried you to the hospital. The only thing you managed to muster before blacking out was,
“Don’t tell Kyungsoo.”
On the week you were hospitalised, Kyungsoo was busy filming somewhere in a rural area in Japan. It was a fresh experience, a breath of fresh air for his career yet all he could think of was you.
The eight-week mark had passed and after two weeks of being hospitalised, it was a shame that you didn’t show signs of improvement regardless of the constant IV that kept you at bay. That’s the thing with relapsing, you know this, nothing will work unless you want to get better—and you haven’t found a reason to do so.
But it was a little bit bearable when Chanyeol came in to visit, sometimes bringing other members with him to cheer you up and give you extra encouragement. You particularly love when he brings Minseok along, the older was the most well-mannered of the bunch and he just feels like an older brother.
—
The sliding door of your hospital ward suddenly slammed open, you instinctively diverted your attention to the door, finding a familiar figure walking in with eyes ready to shoot lasers at you.
“W-what the fuck?” you eyed him. “Why the hell are you here? What are you doing here?”
You were surprised at your energy to snap at the man whilst you half-sat on a hospital bed with an IV attached on your hand. And here I thought I was weak.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that? Why the fuck are you here?” he retorted, “I heard you’re sick but I’m surprised that your stupidity still tags along after 2 months.” he scorned, his bluntness never goes away huh?
“W-what? What did you say to me?”
“Even though we’re fighting and you’re mad you could’ve hit me instead. Yell, scream, curse at me- I couldn’t care less if you did,” he paused, “but why would you starve yourself again?”
By the tone of his voice, although you could pick up his anger- his disappointment, you really didn’t want to put down your ego.
“I’m not here because of you, idiot. Now what are you doing here? Go away” You countered him.
“Are you blind? As you can see I’m visiting a friend. A very sick and a stubborn one at that.” he managed to scoff at your act. You rolled your eyes, not even baffled at this point.
“No one told you to. Now, leave.” you pointed at the door.
“A little tall birdie did, he begged me to come.” he stills on the ends of the hospital bed
“Well, thanks for coming but you are really uninvited here. Please follow the door to exit.” you gave him a sarcastic smile.
“And if I won’t comply? What are you gonna do?” he taunts back. “Would you tell Chanyeol or Sehun to take me away? And why do you think they’ll comply with your request? They’re scared of me more than of Junmyeon-Hyung,” he looked around the room before focusing his eye-contact back to you.
“The only thing you could do to kick me out in your sickly state is call the nurse… that’s if, you’re willing to bear the consequence of reporting an idol?” he rambled.
“Oh you little shit..”
“Don’t you little shit me,” he mocked back,
“You know, Chanyeol might’ve given away your conditions but he’s certainly not the one watching MY reality show for the past weeks.”
You mentally cursed.
He gave out a laugh, before continuing in a stern tone,“The only person logged in my SBS account is you. Did you miss me so badly that you liked all those clips using my account?”
“Do better, y/n.” he finished, before abruptly leaving the room.
You were left astounded, just like the moment he exited your apartment 8 weeks ago. But this time, not long after, he came back bringing what looked like a lunchbox. He quietly sat down on the chair next to your bed while opening one of the containers, you only could stare at him in confusion.
Do Kyungsoo was indeed unpredictable.
“Do better, eat better, y/n. So you can fight me again.” He spoke up before offering a spoonful of porridge to your mouth. You gazed at the spoon in front of you before shifting back at him. You silently refused.
“Open up,” he said softly and you did. There was something about his voice that made you comply with his requests, like it was laced with care and concern.
You opened your mouth and carefully swallowed his cooking. The taste wasn’t foreign to you, it was his pumpkin and sweet potato porridge. He made it for you every time you’re upset, making the dish your ultimate comfort food. After the first spoonful, you were bracing yourself for a reflux but it never came, you were able to stomach his food just fine.
“Good girl” he praised you before handing another scoop to your mouth, asking you to have more.
As you ate quietly, he spoke,
“You need to do better than this y/n. You need energy to curse at me- hit me…and that’s why you need to eat to recover,” his forehead creased as he expressed his thoughts yet it didn’t stop him from feeding you every spoon.
“It’s- It’s so frustrating you know? Looking at you like this… I-I almost lost it when Chanyeol called saying you’ve been admitted for two weeks! I was in Japan and I never wanted to pack my bags so quickly..”
“Y-you..You’re so frustrating-“ he let out a breath he unconsciously held. You could see his eyes weren’t as calm, like he had other complaints he’d like to express but he held back. With the last spoonful, he closed the container and discarding it back to the lunchbox.
He softly muttered, “Rest well, I’ll be back tomorrow,” he gave a quick peck on the crown of your head, an action that surprised you, before leaving the ward.
He did come back the next day and the day after that, and another day after that. He made sure that he was the first sight you see in the morning.
This time, he brought chicken soup. Sadly, the smell didn’t react well with your body as you instantly gagged. He immediately rushed you to the bathroom, pulling your IV off in one smooth motion in the process, leaving you unscathed even with the sudden movement .
You managed to hold it in until you reached the toilet bowl. As you threw up, you helplessly cried, Kyungsoo kept still and supported your figure by the elbows. He softly grasped your hair away from you while you hurled the contents of your stomach. The action left you breathless, exhausted as tears stained your face while you slid down the bathroom floor, you really didn’t have any energy left.
You pity yourself for your relapse, it felt- disgraceful of you to do so. You hid your face with your hands as you sobbed. Fucking disgusting, you told yourself.
Kyungsoo was distressed seeing you like this, especially the fact that he might have some contributions to your relapse, it was even more upsetting for him. He didn’t hug you, he was too much of a coward for that. So he did what he could. Kyungsoo grabbed some napkins and a glass of water outside and came back into the bathroom. He kneeled down to gently tap the hands covering your face, signalling that he’d like to see your face. You slightly look up to see a calm attentive face, care- radiating from his eyes. He wiped your tears and then your mouth, offered you a warm glass of water in which you accepted without repulse.
Both of you stayed quiet for a while before muttering, “Let’s go back to bed.”
He helped you stand up, tucked you back in the hospital bed and called the nurse to reattach the IV he skilfully dismantled. The nurse went berserk on him when she learned of the incident. The situation was truly unpredictable but his actions could’ve seriously injured you. He mumbled his apologies as he nodded in regret while listening to the nurse’s scoldings. Not long after, she left both of you to your own devices.
“Don’t say anything, please?” you quietly begged while looking at him.
Today felt like your turn to burst. He nods without hesitation, firmly holding eye contact with you.
“I’m tired Soo…” you audibly exhaled, tears welled on your already puffed eyes.
You took your time to look at the light blue colour of the hospital blanket, then shifted your eyes to the ceiling of the ward while trying to find words to carry on the conversation.
“I am-“ you stuttered, “f-fuck. I’m fucking tired, you know?”
You just… didn’t have the energy as your tears flowed through your hollow cheeks, dropping to your chin and eventually wetting the blanket. His eyes never left you, catching each and every of your pained expressions.
You had lost your spark, the burning passion and gleam behind your eyes were gone. Your being felt hollow, just a soulless body- empty, dull and glum.
He despised it, the dullness in your eyes. He hated it with all his heart, knowing his efforts were meaningless since he couldn’t stop you from getting worse. He loathes the fact that this time, he was helpless when the love of his life, his best friend, his light, is giving up in front of his eyes.
“Soo…” you whispered, reaching out for his hand with sorrowful eyes. He instantly held yours, warmth emitting from his hold as he looked at you with so much care. Even intertwining hands with you broke his heart at the coldness of your touch.
“Do better, okay?” you let go of his hand from your hold.
The wet tracks of your tears hadn’t stopped yet you managed to prop up an expressionless gaze as you stared at him. You were in pain, so was he, and you didn’t want to hurt him more.
He knew what you meant, he knew what you wanted him to do.
He knew exactly what to do, not that he wanted to.
He was your lifeline, a drug to salvation- You needed to heal without him.
He didn’t understand, he had so many questions formulating in his head but he knew better than to pry. He was hurt but prying meant hurting you further, which was the last thing he’d do.
He stood up, kissed your cheeks, stroked your hair and pecked the crown of your head one last time before heading out to the door.
He slammed the sliding door hard, hopefully to let you know how wrong of you to ask him to leave. But he never looked back, because he was too much of a coward for that.
a/n: should we do a part 2 ??

random but what are ur fav friendships in exo :0
i love this question i love talking about my fixations with exo dynamics so ty for this <3
top one is chanyeol and kyungsoo because it was the first friendship that really caught my attention with exo.. they are the closest dynamic in the group along w xiuchen if we're being real but exols are too dumb to see it. no one and i mean no one brings out kyungsoo's pliant side more than chanyeol. fuck kaisoo cause chansoo is where it's at
i love baekhyun and minseok together because minseok is so caring yet ridiculously and fondly annoyed by him <3 their cat and dog dynamic is delicious. minseok will make baekhyun breakfast while grabbing him by the back of the neck to put him in his place and i think that's beautiful. like i live vicariously through minseok tbh
i'm also the #1 beagle line stan like nothing gives me more joy than chanyeol jongdae and baekhyun being insane and annoying together. when they gang up on suho? chef's kiss. also chanyeol being the maknae of 92 liners don't look at me. chanyeol's meant to be the youngest <3
junmyeon and sehun is a big one too. like sorry but the seho shippers are literally so well fed no one in that group is as whipped for sehun as junmyeon.. it's horrible to see sometimes
my fanboy and chum chum can't be overlooked like sorry but exo sc is forever <333 i love chanyeol just accepting his relationship with sehun is basically him forfeiting any hyung privileges like he is the definition of gentle giant omfg. sorry
i also love baekhyun and sehun. baekhyun and kyungsoo. baekhyun and junmyeon... uhh most combinations with baekhyun are my favorite sorry i can't help it
lastly junmyeon and minseok as the de facto hyung line and how they interact with the rest of the group (this is where i deeply miss lay cause he was also such a hyung to the rest.. seeing the younger ones following him around like puppies was so good) i really like their dynamic too

Up in Smoke (The Sweet Version)
Tumblr media
Genre: EXO
Characters: Kai x Female Reader
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1.4k
Summary: Your boyfriend tries to cook you an anniversary dinner–which goes very wrong…or very right?
A/N: Happy Secret Santa reveal to my giftee @merinaart as part of the @exols-silver-christmas! I hope that you like my gift! I was very inspired by your love for Kai (and your adorable guinea pig!). I’ve enjoyed getting to chat with you over the last couple months! I decided at the last minute to make a “sweet” version of the story and and then separate “spicy” version later on because there were too many ways this story could have gone! So here’s the “sweet” version for you from 🍭-anon!
~*~
“Babe, why do I smell smoke?”
The acrid smell of burning told you what your eyes couldn’t: your boyfriend was in the kitchen again. When he’d insisted on the blindfold, you’d felt butterflies in your stomach, giddy at the thought of what might be coming. Dinner in Itaewon? Wine tasting? A romantic walk by the Han River? The possibilities were endless and after two years together, your thoughtful boyfriend never failed to sweep you off your feet. For your first anniversary together, he’d hired a private chef to cook you a delicious five-course dinner, then you’d dreamily walked through the snow together hand-in-hand, sharing sips of hot chocolate.
It had been the perfect day.
This time around, Jongin had been incredibly secretive about what he was planning. But you knew something was up when you’d caught him sneaking around the apartment after he thought you’d gone to bed, or coming home with mysterious bags that he ferreted away somewhere. You were more than curious to know what the night might bring.
Despite your lack of vision, the clang of pots and pans and rhythmic slice of a kitchen knife told you Jongin had something different in mind this year. And you weren’t sure how to feel. Honestly, the man was a menace when it came to the culinary arts. You snorted, recalling the incident two months prior when he’d scorched the bottom of your wok so bad you’d had to throw it out. Fortunately, the recent installation of a fire extinguisher at least meant he couldn’t realistically burn the apartment down.
When your inquiry went unanswered, you tried again.
“At what point will I need to stop, drop, and roll?”, you said, giggling as the sound of chopping ceased.
Jongin’s footsteps drew closer, until you felt his knees bump against yours. “Ha, ha, very funny, jagi, he chastised playfully. “Kyungsoo taught me how to make this one, so it won’t be like last time, I promise. And I only burned the first one,” he added hastily.
He leaned in and gave you a quick peck on the lips before skirting away, skillfully avoiding your coy attempts to entice him back down for more. Sliding his hand down to rest on your lower back, he led you into what you assumed to be the dining room. A chair squeaked against the floor as Jogin pulled it out and instructed you to sit.
You could feel Jongin’s warmth seeping into you from behind and you jumped when his lips grazed your ear.
“I wanted today to be special for you, for us,  _____–”
Your heart sped up at the sound of his voice. It was hard not to get distracted when he was so close to you, the feel of his arms around you never failed to make you melt.
“Voila!” Jongin exclaimed,  theatrically pulling the blindfold from your eyes.
On reflex, you squeezed your eyes shut to block out the dim light from the chandelier. After a few seconds, you hesitantly cracked an eye open, and you saw it.
Square with rows of tiny indentations and little flecks of dark green and orange, you weren’t sure what to make of the charred–ahem–crispy item perched alone on the large, white plate. You cleared your throat, cognizant of the way Jongin was looking at you looking at his creation. Eyes gleaming with pride. Expectantly waiting for your praise.
You chose your words carefully, trying to make sense of what you were seeing, while not shattering your gentle boyfriend’s heart.
“Jongin, baby…what’s–uh–on the menu, tonight?”
He laughed, as though it was obvious. “It’s a fried rice waffle, silly!”
You looked between the hockey puck on your plate and your sweet boyfriend’s face, grateful for once that you’d taken that god-awful acting class in college.
“It looks…”, you struggled to find the right word, “...interesting…”
Jongin’s head bobbed enthusiastically. “Are you gonna take a bite?”
You nodded with what you hoped was realistic enthusiasm.
God, you sucked at acting. You failed that acting class, don’t you remember?
It was worse than you imagined.
Way worse.
You broke off a piece, chewing gingerly, all while Jongin intently watched your face, waiting for your reaction. All at once, your tongue was hit with a spectrum of flavors and textures–bitter, crunchy, hard, soft, and the overwhelming taste of spring onion. Just…bleh…
“So?” he asked, leaning forward, eyes wide in anticipation.
The glob of “waffle” stuck in your throat at his question, and you swallowed hard to push it down,
“It’s..um..very crunchy…and…um…onion-y?”
Jongin’s face fell.
“It’s awful,” he moaned, covering his face with his hands. He sat down in the chair next to you with his shoulders slumped, the very picture of dejection. “I never should’ve taken cooking advice from Chanyeol and Sehun,” he muttered, almost to himself.
You froze. “I thought you said Kyungsoo taught you this recipe.”
Jongin looked up from his hands and worried his lower lip.
“He did…but then Sehun showed me a TikTok and Chanyeol had a waffle iron…and I just…messed up. Why can’t I cook like Kyungsoo?” he moaned.
He looked so sad, your baby. And he had tried so hard for you tonight. You stood from your chair and folded him into your arms, resting your chin on his head.
“Jongin,” you started, “you and I both know that would be asking a lot of the universe. Be the most handsome and skilled dancer in all of K-Pop and be a good cook? You’d be just too amazing to be real.”
Jongin chuckled beneath you, reaching up to stroke your cheek.
“Besides,” you continued, “Kyungsoo has his strengths and you have yours. Affectionate. Kind. Generous. Smooth on the dance floor. So handsome,” you listed, punctuating each compliment with a peck on the lips.
Your boyfriend hummed in the back of his throat, a slow smile spreading on his face.
“Actually, ____, there is one more thing I have planned for tonight,” he said with a mysterious smile.
He led you to the couch in the living room and gently pressed on your shoulders for you to sit. Telling you to wait, he flipped the lightswitch, plunging the room in darkness. Suddenly, the room was dimly illuminated by a string of clear fairy lights, the soft tones of “Peaches” drifting through the surround-sound speakers.
“Pretty girl, you’re like peaches…it’s a soft embrace…a sweetness that spreads in my mouth…feels good to be the bad guy…”
Jongin leapt into action, his body like water, flowing through the movements like he was born to do. His eyes held yours as he flew and you knew every word of this song was meant for you. Without warning, Jongin sprung forward, pulling you up from the couch and into his arms. As the last notes faded away, you simply swayed together, enjoying each other’s nearness.
Jongin squeezed you close and whispered words of love in your ear. You held his face between your hands and counted your blessings that this wonderful man had found his way into your life.
You stretched on your toes to give him a kiss, only to be rudely interrupted by the sound of the doorbell.
“Were you expecting anyone, babe?” you asked, glancing quizzically at the door.
Jongin shook his head, just as perplexed.
You waited as he walked to the entrance and you could hear the muffled sound of a voice on the other side. The door closed and Jongin came back with a takeout container. Inside you found a feast of your and Jongin’s favorite foods–fried chicken, roasted duck, bibimbap, and tteokbokki–along with an expensive bottle of wine.
“Did you order this?” you asked.
He shook his head, shrugging his shoulders  “No, but the delivery said it’s bought and paid for, so…”
Across the room, Jongin’s phone lit up with a text:
“Jongin-ah, just a tip: never take cooking advice from amateurs like us. Enjoy your meal 😜.
~Chanyeol and Sehun”
“Wow, just wow,” Jongin explained sarcastically. “Can’t trust anyone these days.”
“Except me,” you added, batting your eyelashes playfully.
“Except you,” he agreed. “Well…shall we?” he said, motioning towards the food.
You nodded. “Might as well,” you said with a smile.
“Happy anniversary, jagi.”

A romantic and fluffy slice of life fic for my lovely Secret Santa giftee @dreamylittlesugarcube
Pairing: Kyungsoo/Reader
Words: 4.390
---------------------------------------------------
“Empathy” was a nice little restaurant that opened a few weeks ago. First you saw a moving company bring in all the furniture, accompanied by a young man around your age. You watched them from your window, seeing as you lived right above the now newly opened restaurant.
You lived in your apartment for quite some time and this was the first time that the small place directly under you was rented out.
Your friendly neighbour from down the hall told you, that there once was a restaurant but the owners had to give it up due to old age. So it probably was only appropriate that a new restaurant opened in it’s place.
Sadly you hadn’t had the chance to check it out yet. After a long day of talking and interacting with many people you just liked to relax a little bit at home. That’s not to say that you didn’t like spending time with friends and having a fun time out getting drinks, but you also enjoyed a quite evening on your own, watching some random series or cooking and baking something for yourself. You apartment might be small, perfect for one person, but your kitchen was your marvel. Baking and cooking was an important part of your life so you didn’t spare any expenses when it came to your kitchen. Your parents only shook their head when you told them how much you spent on that. Still, you didn’t regret it one bit.
It was Saturday morning and you stood in your kitchen making some breakfast for yourself, when you saw the young man again. It was the same man which you had seen when the moving company came to bring all the furniture.
He might be working at the restaurant… you thought to yourself.
Curious you looked out of the window to catch a glimpse of him. He had short black hair and wore a hoodie and jeans. From the distance you couldn’t make out anything more, like his face or his height. The only truly noteworthy thing were the huge and heavy looking bags full of groceries he was carrying all by himself.
Shortly after he opened the door to the restaurant and walked inside. You scrambled some eggs and poured them into a hot pan, the man already forgotten.
It was Friday late in the afternoon and you just came back home from a long day. It was raining and your shoes were completely drenched. You cursed and fiddled with your keys to open your front door. As soon as the door closed behind you, you let out a long sigh. Originally you’d planned to buy some groceries and cook something warm and filling for yourself. This torrential downpour just stopped you from taking the detour to the supermarket so now you didn’t have anything to eat for tonight.
“Brilliant…” you murmured to yourself.
You took off your jacket and your shoes and let them out to dry. You stood awkwardly inside your apartment, unsure what to do about the food situation now.
“Maybe a cup of tea first…” you went to your kitchen to grab a teabag and a mug when you suddenly saw the sign of the newly opened restaurant right underneath your window. You fiddled with your teabag for a second before putting it back into it’s container. The mug also was put into it’s usual place.
You walked to your entrance hall and grabbed a dry jacket and a new pair of shoes. You checked your bag for your purse and your other necessities and left your apartment.
“It might be time to check out the new restaurant. Let’s see if it’s any good.” You smiled to yourself, relieved that you would get something warm to eat tonight.
The doorbell jingled and a warm gust of air hit your face when you entered the restaurant. It was a cosy little place with only a few tables. The name “Empathy” fit the atmosphere of this establishment. At the end of the room you could see the open kitchen with a bar running around it and some chairs to sit on. The chef was preparing some food that smelled delicious. He was standing with his back towards you. He was slender and had an apron tied around his small waist. The chef also seemed to be on the smaller side height wise. But before you had the chance to observe him some more a server came over and asked you with a blinding gummy smile: “Hi welcome to Empathy. Seat for one person?”
You peeled your eyes away from the chef and looked at the server with a friendly smile. “Yes please. Only one person.” The server nodded and brought you straight to the bar which wrapped around the open kitchen.
“Is this place all right?” You nodded and noticed the name tag he had on his apron. “Yes thank you Minseok.” He gave you that gummy smile again and handed you a menu.
“Just call me when you found something.” Minseok smiled at you again and left for the next table. There were some tasty sounding dishes on the menu and it wasn’t easy for you to choose one. In the end you decided on something warm and filling and Minseok came over to take your order of soybean stew.
While you were waiting for your dish you observed the chef again. His moves were clean and efficient. He was clearly a professional when it came to cooking. Just when you were sipping on your water the chef turned around and you did a double take. Luckily you didn’t choke on your drink but it was a near thing.
“Oh, it’s you!” you blurted out after swallowing your sip of water. Surprised by your outburst the chef looked up and indeed it was the young man you’ve seen a few times during the last few weeks. The one you observed from your window with the huge grocery bags.
“I’m sorry, but do I know you?” he asked. His round eyes widened behind his horn rimmed glasses. You felt the heat climb into your face when you realized that you disgraced yourself in front of your new neighbour. Your new very handsome neighbour… For he indeed was handsome with his short dark hair, pillowy lips and smooth, tan skin. Even his eyes were mesmerizing and drew you in. You only realized that you’ve stared at him for longer than you should have, when he cleared his throat.
Your eyes widened and you stammered: “I… I mean I think I’ve just seen you around you know? I live right above this restaurant and… yes.” You smiled, embarrassed about this whole situation. Realization dawned on his face.
“Ah well then. Nice to meet you neighbour.” He nodded at you and put the dish you ordered right in front of you. You hadn’t even realized that he tried to bring you your meal before you pulled this little stunt.
“My name is Kyungsoo.”
“Oh, nice to meet you Kyungsoo!” you also told him your name.
“Well then, enjoy your meal.” he said with his smooth and gentle voice. You thanked him and grabbed your cutlery. As soon as you tasted the first spoonful of his soybean soup you were in heaven. It tasted better than any soybean soup you’ve eaten before and you let out a moan of contentment. As soon as this sound left your mouth you heard a small laugh. Your head whipped up and you directly looked into the twinkling eyes of Kyungsoo. His full lips were curled into a little smile and you could see that he was clearly amused but also a tad bit satisfied.
“Well, I’m glad you enjoy your meal.” His voice was full of teasing and your face got warm again. It seemed as if you wouldn’t catch a break today. Why did you have to embarrass yourself in front of this handsome man not only once but twice? Usually you were more composed than that. You swallowed your nervousness and squared your shoulders.
“The food is really tasty. I might have to come back every day!”
Kyungsoo grinned at you.
“I’m looking forward to it, neighbour.” With that he ended this little tragedy you manoeuvred yourself into and went back to cooking. Even though you felt embarrassed for the rest of the evening you swore to yourself, that you would definitely be back soon.
After you finished your soup and Minseok took your money you put on your jacket and stood up from your chair. Before you left though you couldn’t help yourself and called out to Kyungsoo.
He turned around to you, a questioning look in his eyes.
“See you tomorrow, Kyungsoo!” The corner of his mouth turned upwards.
“See you tomorrow.”
You left the shop with a spring in your step.
It became routine to eat your dinner at “Empathy”. You always sat right at the bar where you could overlook the kitchen and watch Kyungsoo prepare the dishes for the costumers. You loved how concentrated he was and how his nimble fingers prepared each ingredient with love and care. During all these evenings you ate at the restaurant you got to know him better. You now knew that Kyungsoo wasn’t just a chef but the owner of the place. Minseok was one of his best friends who sometimes helped out during rush hours.
If you were honest with yourself you enjoyed Kyungsoo’s company probably more than you should. He was kind and soft spoken, yet could get quite scary when things didn’t go to plan. Still, you admired him. A few weeks earlier it still might have been able to prevent this crush from truly developing but you just didn’t want to. He was someone you could see yourself with. You just weren’t sure if he felt the same. Kyungsoo was hard to read if he didn’t want you to. Despite that you hoped that one day he might show you that he liked you as well.
During one of your regular visits at the restaurant you exchanged numbers with Kyungsoo. You wheedled his number out of him and now you texted him from time to time. He wasn’t a fan of texting, saying it was too bothersome to type. So you were quite surprised when you got a text with his name one afternoon.
I know it’s really short notice but do you have plans tonight?
Your heart started racing, you felt butterflies in your stomach. You couldn’t believe what you just read. Just to be sure you read his message again.
Was he asking you out? You squealed and jumped around your apartment. Out of breath and with shaking fingers you typed a reply. You didn’t want to seem too eager so you just wrote one small sentence.
Depends on why you’re asking… :)
Your phone chimed only a few seconds later. You opened the message with sweaty hands and a fluttering heart.
Minseok is sick and I need someone to serve tables tonight. I don’t know who else to ask.
Your excitement vanished. Why did I think that he would ask me out on a date? You thought. Of course it’s not that. Your heart started slowing down and the huge grin you sported only a few minutes before vanished without a trace. You sighed and opened your messages again.
I’m free tonight. When should I start?
Even though Kyungsoo unknowingly just crushed your hopes you still couldn’t leave him hanging. He was a dear friend in need of help and you just couldn’t stand the thought of him having to manage the restaurant all on his own.
Would 6 p.m. work for you? Thank you, I know why you’re my favourite neighbour.
You laughed.
I’m the only neighbour you know.
But yes, 6 p.m. is fine!
You waited for a reply but none came. You laughed a little, fond and amused. That was just typical for Kyungsoo. You put your phone away and went to the bathroom to get a shower. It wasn’t that much time left before your impromptu shift started and you didn’t want to look like something the cat dragged in in front of Kyungsoo’s costumers.
6 p.m. arrived faster than you thought possible and you stood in front of Kyungsoo who explained to you the inner workings of his restaurant “Empathy”. You weren’t completely new to serving tabled so you were confident in yourself.
“And lastly you need to put on this apron.” Kyungsoo showed you the apron he wanted you to wear. It was a dark grey one which only wrapped around your waist. Kyungsoo looked at you with his head cocked to the side, contemplating something.
“It might be a little bit big on you. Minseok normally wears this one so I’m not sure if - “ You interrupted him. “Hey! I’m not that small. Look!” You made yourself as tall as you could and looked him straight into the eyes. His eyes started to form crescents as a heart-shaped smile took over his face.
“I see. Then maybe it might fit. Let me try.” Kyungsoo gripped the apron tighter in his hands and took a step towards you. Your eyes grew large. The both of you never were that close before. You could even feel his warmth and his breath tickling your face. He was still looking straight into your eyes and he leaned even closer to your face. You jolted as you felt large and warm hands around your waist. He guided his hands around your hips, directly to the small of your back. You were mesmerised and didn’t dare move even a little bit. You heart was racing inside your chest and your breathing was getting unsteady. His fingers swiped along your back where he was tying the apron. You got lost in his eyes and you felt his fingers still. For only a second you thought that he might lean in to kiss you but he closed his eyes, took a deep breath and slowly de-tangled himself from you. You instantly missed his warmth and his arms around you. He felt so strong and safe. You could have stayed like that until the end of the night.
Kyungsoo stepped away from you and looked around the kitchen while his hands played with the ends of his own apron which he had donned before you. He cleared his throat and took a deep breath. If you didn’t know better you might think that he was bashful. He looked at you again and then at the apron he so charmingly put on you. A small smile found his lips again.
“Well it seems like you were right. You aren’t that small.” And he was right. The apron fit you quiet well and you looked at him, satisfied.
“I told you so!” This childish response was followed by a deep laugh from Kyungsoo. You couldn’t help but laugh with him. After the two of you recovered from your small laughing fit he got serious again.
“Then we can start now. The first costumers should arrive soon.” You nodded and took your place at the register. When you heard Kyungsoo call out to you, you turned around.
“Thank you, really. I don’t know what I would have done without you tonight.”
“It’s my pleasure.” And only a few seconds after you answered him, the first costumer arrived. The night was a blur after that and when you came home that night you were dead on your feet. When you fell into bed you could feel the first fingers of sleep already gripping at you and you fell asleep with a smile on your face, thinking about Kyungsoo tying this little insignificant apron around your middle.
When you awoke the next morning you saw a notification on your phone. Surpirsed –  because who would write you on a Saturday morning – you opened the message and saw it was one from Kyungsoo. You were awake immediately. You sat up and rubbed your eyes to get all the sand out of them and then promptly read his message.
Thank you again for yesterday.
Do you have plans tonight?
You groaned. How could he send you the same question twice in a row? A little grumpy you replied
Don’t make me help out again tonight!
I’m totally knackered…
You only had to wait a few minutes for his reply.
I actually wanted to repay you for yesterday. But if you don’t have time I can see if I’ll find another date?
You couldn’t believe your eyes! He wanted to repay you? How?
I mean I’m free tonight…
You stared at your screen and waited for a message to plop up. You didn’t have to wait long. Your eyes roved over his reply hungrily.
Good. Please come to the restaurant at 8 p.m.
You couldn’t believe your eyes so you quickly typed
I thought you didn’t want to make me work. :(
Three little dots appeared, indicating that Kyungsoo was writing something in return.
I won’t, please don’t worry.
And unbidden grin forced its way onto your face. You couldn’t wait to see what he had planned for tonight now that he reassured you again that you wouldn’t need to work.
Alright Soo… then I’ll be there.
I’m glad. See you tonight.
After this last message from him you fell back into bed and let out a long breath. You couldn’t wait for tonight and the surprise Kyungsoo prepared just for you. Your poor little heart started fluttering again and you felt anticipation rise within you.
Evening came faster and yet slower than you wanted. You were nervous, even though you didn’t know exactly why. You knocked on the door of the restaurant, because it was already closed. Kyungsoo opened you soon after.
“Hi…” You said. He stepped aside to let you in and as soon as you came inside you saw a nicely decorated table. Kyungsoo put up some candles and prepared a table for two. It looked very intimate and cosy. He even strung up some fairy lights. You could see that he took great care in decorating everything and you felt very touched by his effort.
Suddenly he spoke up. “I hope it’s alright that I prepared a nice dinner for us?” He seemed a bit unsure, as if he was scared that his efforts would scare you away.
“It’s lovely, thank you.” You gave him your best smile and you saw that his shoulders relaxed the tiniest fraction.
“Come sit,” he beckoned you. “I’ve already prepared everything.” You followed him and sat down.
Kyungsoo went to the kitchen and soon after he came back with a big bowl of soybean stew. You happily hopped around on your chair. “My favourite!” You exclaimed. He sported an indulgent smile on his handsome face.
“I know.” He didn’t say anything more, just went to the kitchen again and brought a bowl of soybean stew for himself. You impatiently sat in your chair, waiting for him to wish you a pleasant meal. Finally he uttered the blessed words.
“Enjoy your meal.” As soon as this sentence left his mouth you tucked in. You hadn’t tasted his cooking in way too long. Even though you came to his establishment nearly every day, each day without his tasty cooking was one wasted in your opinion. As soon as the first bite entered your mouth you were in heaven.
“Why does it always taste so good?” You moaned around your spoonful of soup. Kyungsoo watched you with his face supported on his hand. He had a gentle look in his eyes as he watched you eat. “It’s made with love.” He whispered. “Hm?” You looked up from your bowl and swallowed. “What did you say?”
“I said it’s made with love, that’s why it tastes like that.” The atmosphere changed. Suddenly the air felt charged and the light from the fairy lights seemed more intimate, almost romantic. You put down your spoon and truly looked at Kyungsoo. He hadn’t even started eating. Instead he was watching you with his deep and soulful eyes. You didn’t move, you barely dared to breathe. It felt as if you were on the edge of something huge, something monumental.
And your feeling proved true, when Kyungsoo stood up and walked over to your side of the table. You looked up at him, heart hammering in your chest. You felt breathless.
Kyungsoo slowly lifted his hand and brought it to your cheek. He softly and gently laid his hand on your face and his thumb started caressing your cheek. Your eyes fluttered closed. You couldn’t believe what was happening. Was this a dream? It felt like it. Kyungsoo stopped stroking your cheek so you opened your eyes. A question in them. Why did you stop? He mustered you, intently. And as slowly as he lifted his hand, he leaned towards you.
Your eyes got bigger and it felt as if no air was reaching your lunges any more. He came ever closer and as soon as you could feel his breath on your face your eyes drifted to his sinful lips. They were closer than ever before and you could admire them in all their beauty. They would be perfect for kissing. Pillowy and soft. Kyungsoo noticed you watching his lips and you felt his breath hitching on your skin. You looked into his eyes again and in them you saw a kind of certainty, a kind of resolve. Your hands moved without your consent and you gripped his upper arms. They felt lean and muscular under your hands. As soon as Kyungsoo registered your touch he leaned in further and whispered in a husky voice that sent goosebumps all over your body. “Last chance to stop this, darling.” But as soon as this endearment left his lips you knew you were hopelessly lost.
You didn’t move away, you even leaned a little bit further in. This was what you dreamed of. What you yearned for all these last weeks. Feeling his touch, his warmth. Hearing his endearments. Kyungsoo noticed you getting closer and you saw relieve in his eyes. But a second later all you felt were his warm and soft lips on yours. Your eyes fluttered closed, you were fully emerged in the sensation of his full lips resting against yours. Kyungsoo breathed out a shuddering breath and immediately after he gripped you tighter, his hold on your face tightening and a hand sneaking to your neck, bending your face upwards. This caused the angle of your mouths to shift and Kyungsoo started kissing you in earnest. He was a good kisser. He softly engaged you in your kissing and playfully teased your lips with his wicked tongue. You sighed, unable to resist his charms. As soon as your lips opened, Kyungsoo used his opportunity and sneaked his tongue inside your warm mouth. He tasted like peppermint toothpaste and something uniquely Kyungsoo. You were addicted immediately and never wanted this moment to stop.
Way too soon he slowed the pace of the kiss. He was only pecking your lips now and even though the kiss was more than innocent at the moment you felt as if he brought you to other spheres. You yearned for his touch, his kiss for way too long. Even some little pecks were bliss to you.
After a last soft peck he stopped kissing you completely. He took your face in both his hands and leaned his forehead against yours. You opened your eyes and looked directly into his face. His lips were glossy and swollen from the kiss you just shared and his eyes glimmered with fondness and affection. Yours mirrored the same emotions. Your hands slid up his shoulders and your softly gripped his neck without breaking eye contact. The two of you stood there in this position for a few more seconds until Kyungsoo released your from his hold and straightened himself out again.
You looked at him, never once did your eyes leave his face, searching for a hint to his emotions. But you didn’t need to worry. In his eyes shone adoration and his lips were curled into an endeared smile.
“Darling.” This word again. His voice sounded husky.
“Yes?” Your voice wasn’t much better. You cleared your throat. That elicited a wider smile from him.
“That’s not how I planned this evening to go if I’m honest.” He admitted.
“No?” You asked a bit unsure. “How did you want it to go?”
Feeling your uncertainty Kyungsoo grabbed your hand and interlaced your fingers. His hands were so much bigger than yours and you marvelled at the difference. He squeezed your hand and your looked back at him. Trusting, hoping.
“I wanted to eat some nice dinner with you. Then some dessert and after that I wanted to ask you a very important question.” You heart fluttered.
“What question?” You couldn’t help but ask. He took a deep breath and squeezed your hand again, as if he was nervous. His eyes were shifting around the room. Still you gave him all the time that he needed and patiently waited for his answer.
“I wanted to ask if you’d like to go on a date with me?” This sentence completely blew your mind. You never thought that he might be interested in dating you! That your crush might be reciprocated. But it seemed as if your feelings weren’t one-sided. As soon as you processed his question you immediately nodded your head. You couldn’t contain your happiness and started skipping on your chair.
“Of course! I’d love to go on a date with you!” You blurted out. Even though you were a little bit embarrassed about your outburst, the blinding heart shaped smile on Kyungsoo’s face let you forget your embarrassment.
“How about tomorrow?” He asked. He seemed eager and happy about your consent. A warm feeling spread in your chest and something akin to contentment settled in your heart.
“That sounds lovely. But before that…” Kyungsoo looked at you imploringly. “How about another kiss?” You grinned at him mischievously and he laughed his pretty, deep laugh.
“Everything for my darling.” And then he leaned in and gave you a kiss you might never forget again.

I feel like they probably arent but I want to know if any of the exo members are atleast somewhat gay icons in any way💔💔💔
kyungsoo is beloved by gay men! probably much of exo desired by gay men but idk anything except for kyungsoo cuz it's so funny that his primary demographic is gay men and moms.
sehun is extremely gay but like in a sugar baby with celebrity chef and b-list actor boyfriends way. he has stated many times that he likes men and that he likes suho specifically (and tao back in the day) but it got so thoroughly buried by exo-ls it was mind boggling.
