Hello, I spiraled through reading all your time travel au comics and can i just say, your art is just so charming. I love how you write your posts, they remind me so much of reading fancomics back in the day and just having fun with putting characters in silly situations. There's so much work put into it and at the same time its just FUN yknow
Thank you!
the biggest inspirations on my writing style were probably the unreasonable amount of YS Kids (i really wish more kids had read this bc i re-read a bunch of them recently and they still hold up, but i literally don't know anyone who's even heard of it) and Calvin and Hobbes i read as a child, as well as foxtrot, pooch cafe, breaking cat news, and the original Eddsworld comics, but the Far Side has also instilled me with a great respect for single-panel and visual humor, and i've been trying hard to recreate it
i also adore classic cartoons, especially looney toons and popeye, but i also love the ridiculous slapstick of the muppets bread commercials and the three stooges. (the first home alone movie is also great in this regard)
my artstyle is really heavily inspired by Chynna Clugston (i would literally spend hours tracing over panels in Queen Bee as a little kid), Edd Gould (just look at how i draw mouths lol), Jhonen Vasquez (probably where i got my obsession with block shading), and Paul ter Voorde (hence my love for clean black lines) i also adore Dave Gibbons' work, he heavily inspired the way i do traditional illustration, specifically my coloring style. more recently, (like several years ago but still) ROTMNT got me to start fucking with line weight and more expressive faces.
sorry abt the long rant i just love talking about my inspirations :]

MICHELLE PHILLIPS REVEALS WHAT SHE LEFT OUT OF BOOK
Marilyn Beck, Special to the News/Sun-SentinelSUN-SENTINEL
'Never in my wildest dreams would I ever consider it."
That is what Michelle Phillips has to say about writing an autobiography.
True, the dusty-rose blonde who sang her way to fame with the Mamas and the Papas in the '60s has California Dreamin' due to be published by Warner Books next May. But the tome is about the famed folk-rock group and that's all. It concludes in 1968.
We won't be reading any heart-stopping revelations, she says - although she does cover such subjects as the group's drug use. "We came in about the time the psychedelics were introduced ...
"I tried to tell a very '60s story with, hopefully, a very '60s backdrop. I tried to tell how it was then: the way people felt and the way they thought and the way they voted; where they lived and who they hung out with and what they wore. I tried to paint a picture," says Phillips, who worked out her story with the aid of writer and ex-Beatles publicist Derek Taylor.
As for the past 16 years, "writing about that is just not something any of the people in my life would want. I don't think it's really important for any reasons to tell stories about boyfriends. It's unfortunate," she says, laughing, "because I have some great stories. But it's bad taste - declasse."
There's no question that Phillips' life after '68 has been chock-full of the kind of drama that makes publishers drool.
Her various romances have made for plenty of tabloid fodder. Married thrice - to
John Phillips,
Robert Burch [radio exec],
Dennis Hopper - for eight days
her celebrated liaisons have included Jack Nicholson as well as the  actor Grainger Hines, the father of her 3-year-old son.
PARTNERS:
Grainger Hines (1981–1984)
Geoffrey Tozer (1987–1996)

Steven Zax, as was.
Tumblr media
Steven Zax (1938 - 2017, plastic surgeon, who in his youth was a music producer) — Lived with Michelle Phillips from 1999 until his death in 2017. They never married.  De-facto stepfather of Chynna Phillips, Austin Hines and Aron Wilson.
There have also been traumatic times.
Six years ago, Phillips was trying to obtain legal custody of Tamerlane Phillips, the son of her ex-husband, John, and his (now ex) third wife, Genevieve Waite - and Michelle was accusing them of child-stealing.
But she refused to say at the time why she was going to such extremes. John Phillips' drug-dependency problems were later made quite public by John himself, after he (and his daughter, Mackenzie) joined a rehabilitation program.
Now, "that's resolved, water under the bridge." Tamerlane, 15, "is at boarding school. He's a great kid.
"And John and I are -" She stops. "Genevieve and I are actually friends. She lives here in Beverly Hills."
A moment later, Phillips adds: "I would like to heal up any bad feelings that might still be harbored between any of us. It's just that it takes a long time to get over things."
John, Mackenzie, Denny Doherty and Spanky McFarlane are still touring clubs as the new Mamas and the Papas.
"Initially, I didn't like it at all," says Phillips of the group. "But then I went to see them in '83 in Las Vegas, and I was very impressed. I got up onstage and sang with them, and it was a very heartwarming experience.
"The music is still good."
(In fact, Phillips reports, "I still make fine royalties from the albums. If you had told me in 1968 that 20 years later I'd be receiving wonderful royalty checks for those three years still, I wouldn't have believed you.")
Phillips is about as far away from '60s psychedelia this day as one could get. Dressed in an elegant soft pink designer slacks ensemble, she sits in the cool, rich atmosphere of Beverly Hills' Trumps restaurant enjoying afternoon tea.
The singer-cum-actress recently returned from Arizona and American Anthem production. Anthem - due for release next Fourth of July - marks the movie debut of Olympic gold medal-winning gymnast Mitch Gaylord. Gymnastics competition serves as the vehicle through which is told a story of relationships, according to Phillips. It'll have the look and feel of rock videos, which is no surprise; American Anthem also marks filmmaker Albert Magnoli's follow-up to Prince's Purple Rain.
Phillips plays Gaylord's mother in the movie.
"Mitch is 24 years old," she notes. "But that's all right. I'm 41. If I'd had a child when I was 17, he'd be 24. It works for me."
She laughs. "And I couldn't have a cuter kid.
"You know, I am a proud mother," she adds, referring to her own progeny: 3-year-old Austin Hines and his 17-year-old half-sister, Chynna Phillips. Note: Grainger Hines has three sons Aron Hines, and Austin Hines, and Gray Hines. Aron and Austin's mother is Michelle Phillips.
Aron WILSON: Adopted son of Michelle Phillips & Geoffrey Tozer.
Followers of the saga of Michelle Phillips have become well-acquainted with her daughter by John Phillips over the years - despite Phillips' insistence that Chynna remain out of show business until reaching adulthood.
Chynna auditioned for the '70s-updated edition of The Mickey Mouse Club before her mother put a stop to it.
Later, Chynna lined herself up with a top agent before Phillips heard of the goings-on. "I want her to have a normal childhood," Phillips said - and she promised Chynna she'd "make it up to her. I'm putting together a project for her to do when she's old enough."

Michelle with her grand-daughter & mini-me, Brooke (Chynna’s daughter)
Phillips grins when asked about casting of the her role should her California Dreamin' book be made into a movie. (Indeed, Phillips' plans to make a movie about the Mamas and the Papas predated writing of the text.)
"Isn't it obvious? Of course, I'd at least like my daughter to read for it. She's done a lot of acting. She's been in workshops since she was 12."
Chynna will be 18 in February. She's making plans to head to Japan to do some modeling.
Tumblr media
Chynna’s husband Billy and their 3 kids
Mama Phillips is already gearing up for the next chapters of her life. She's plotting her book tour. Young Austin, she reports, will be staying home with her friend and nanny of 16 years, Rosa Garcia.
She also has rounded up celebrity women friends for a calendar to be published by Warner Books, the proceeds of which will go to charity.
She's building a getaway log house in Idlewild, Calif.
And there is a whirl of other projects, friends, ideas.
"I'm starting to amaze myself," she says, in one unguarded moment. "I'm looking at myself and thinking, 'Auntie Mame. Oh, no.' "

"A Written Journey"
-Flores, Chynna Faith
Writing is like exploring; writing is like opening yourself to others. It is hard to express yourself to others; it is easier to write it. Expressing the thoughts that you cannot say, expressing the feelings that you feel. You know what to write and how to describe it because you know how to tell it through writing. There are times when you cannot write anything, the times that the mind is only blank and doesn't know what to write or to feel about it. It is part of our life.

Trash Heap Souvenir No. 0
Introduction:
Some folks say a magician should never reveal their tricks. But I’ve always found what’s behind the curtain fascinating. The more I learn about a favorite artist of mine the more I can understand their work. Love nerding out about that stuff…
“Did you know that the reason…?”
Sometimes collaborator and friend Ashlee Elfman was gonna work on an “Oral History of Blvd Du Cinema” book because the behind-the-scenes on all the no-budget stuff I’ve worked on, or how events in life shaped these ideas (domino effects), I think are a lot more interesting, and better, than the movies I make. But it fell apart. It was very ambitious.
So I’ve been toying with the idea of jotting down the history of my zero-budget productions. I’ve gone back-and-forth with it throughout the years— even doing a John Fante/Arturo Bandini sort of thing, changing names. But, eh, I’ve got nothing to hide (well, unless it involves a person who should get a fictional name). Besides, I used to write about my daily encounters on Livejournal (remember that) many moons ago. I always pull from the archives there and reshape incidents to fit whatever made-up story I’m working on. So is it really made-up after all? Hey, I did make a movie called JERRY POWELL that’s all about trusting perceptions, and more over, yourself. How much have we doctored our own memories?
Anyway. I like keeping records of things. And it’s also for any close friend’s sanity. Because I recount the same tales. Repeatedly. I think, as the past has proven, that once I jot something down, I never bring it up again. Besides, quoting a famed author, “I have nothing to offer anybody, except my own confusion.”
Bare with it, tho, if you care to read, ‘cause I speak in tangents just how my movies play out and I’m non-linear. Just know that it’ll all eventually come full circle.
“Please be patient,” says the impatient.

No. 1: 2002.
There we were on the 5-freeway headed south and it had just started to drizzle rain. Something was telling me to get off at the next Santa Ana exit, to go to my parent’s house and nab some more CDs for the road; all I had was New Order’s SUBSTANCE and it was a two-hour drive to San Diego. But I didn’t listen. Ignored intuition. It’s a double-album. We’ll be fine.
It was a few days after Halloween and I had just closed shop: Geez Louise. That’s where I had met Poul Johansen a few years earlier. Now I had inherited his gig and responsibilities at said store in downtown Fullerton: drop/pick up the register cash from the bank, open up, steam recent vintage clothing arrivals, keep track of inventory, ring-up customers, tidy up, close-up, you know, the basics. By myself. It was cool. I felt cool. Some nice responsibilities for a whatever-year-old kid. One time I even let a buddy sneak a keg into the dressing room and handed customers empty cups. But that was later.
I used to play a lot of Bo Diddley at Geez Louise. And girl group stuff. I love The Shirelles. Joey, the owner, one day came in and upon hearing the tunes I was serenating the place with joked, “What are we? A vintage clothing store?”
Joey had a stack of totally awesome albums in one of the counter drawers there too. Flipper GENERIC, Christian Death ONLY THEATER OF PAIN, Misfits EARTH A.D., it was the first time I heard all of those. I ripped them onto CD-Rs.
Anyway. There was this cheap digital camera around and I got the idea to dress-up in all the leftover Halloween costumes. I pretended I was dead and Poul snapped photos of me in a cape, head hanging upside down from the counter. Wish I still had those. I then got the even brighter idea—and I get those a ton ‘cause I’m reliably spontaneous and unreliable when it comes to sticking to plans– to hit up my friend Chynna and go visit her and her boyfriend Jon in San Diego. Why? I dunno.
“What kind of beers do you guys like?”
I’m glad she asked that ‘cause I sure wasn’t twenty-one yet and was too embarrassed to admit it, and this meant we weren’t going to hit a bar. Chynna liked Pabst. And Pabst she got.
Chynna’s pretty much the older sister I never had. I was (am) a big fan of her comic books, particularly Blue Monday, which, as the advertisement that drew me to it in the first place noted, was pretty much Archie but with mods, punks, and rockers. I was blown away. I looked at the poster drawings in the background of the ad’s panels. These kids were listening to the same shit I was listening to! No way! I hardly knew anyone into the same things. I was pretty lonely. I wrote to her a gushing email* in which I quoted Ren n’ Stimpy (“Your grandmother sucks eggs!”).
*The email was later printed in the back of one of the issues of Blue Monday.
That got a laugh out of Chynna, and soon we became internet friends (AOL chat). A few years later I met her in person. She invited me to her birthday party in SD which revealed a very small world coincidence, the first time I maybe truly experienced something like that, but if I keep talking about it I’ll never get back to what I was originally saying…
So. Oh, yeah... Poul and I hit the road. In our costumes. And because my memory is a bit frazzled still from the terrible thing that was about to happen, I can’t remember if he was or if I was the one wearing the rainbow-colored clown wig. I’ll never know.
We were near Oceanside. And the cars on the road began to gradually slow down. It’s getting a bit dark now, and the rain is coming down heavier but it’s not pouring, you know? I went into the slow lane. It was clear. Well, save for one car a bit up ahead. And all of a sudden that car just quickly hops over into the right shoulder, as if it could literally hop over to the right. I squint my eyes at this large lump of clothing lying up ahead on the road. That’s what the car in front of me had avoided. What am I looking at here? And as Poul and I speed closer to it, we both drop our jaws, and I yell out, “Oh! Shi---”
Cut off. I didn’t finish my short sentence.
I don’t know which way I swerved. But it was like the movies. Slow-mo. We were spinning on the highway. 360. In circles. I’m seeing headlights, I’m seeing the rain drops on my windshield. My head jerks to the right. BASH!!! We crash right into the center divider.
BLACK.
I’m on the highway. Walking. Blood or rain, or maybe I imagined either or both, like a curtain over my eyes. I was swaying. I look and I see scattered blurry VHS tapes all across the lanes. I stumble.
BLACK.
I’m in an ambulance. I’m on my back. I’m trying to sit up. But I can’t stop talking. I’m wearing an Eater shirt, by the way. The ‘70s UK teen punk band. One of my favorites. I’m asking the paramedic what his favorite punk bands are. He’s keeping me conscious, telling me he loves The Stiff Little Fingers. I laugh loudly, “Stiff Little Fingers are awesome!”
BLACK.
I’m staring at what’s possibly the ceiling of an emergency hospital as I’m wheeled down a hallway.
BLACK.
I look up from a bed. I see a worried Chynna.
BLACK.
(I think) there’s my mom. And Luis, my brother.
What the hell happened?
The car had been hit from every direction. It was a Daewoo. A burgundy Daewoo. My first car. I picked that color ‘cause that was my girlfriend-at-the-time-of-purchasing’s favorite color. When my dad learned that he gave me this look. Not a bad look. Just one of those, “Of course it is”-sorta looks. It was a small car. And in that car I got to know the entire Beatles discography, and Bowie’s HUNKY DORY (and SPACE ODDITY), and the Psychedelic Furs’ TALK TALK TALK. And I bring to mind being stuck in traffic as on my delayed way to go visit that girlfriend (Amanda #1) who lived in Fullerton. I was driving from Costa Mesa where I worked as a truck-to-floor clerk (basically one of the people that got to Borders Books at six in the morning to pull the new stock from the storage rooms and put them on their respective shelves). This was quite a hike for me on that sardines-in-a-can 57-freeway going from Costa Mesa to Fullerton, listening to The Verves URBAN HYMNS on repeat. To this day, when I hear that album, I see myself on the 57-freeway in red break-light-flooded traffic as the afternoon turned into night. But now this car was an accordion. If anyone had been sitting in the backseats, they’d be dead.
This kid Aaron, the first person to get me drunk on scotch, not wasted, but drunk, and the first person to give me my first bump of blow, bragged that he decided at the last minute to not join Poul and I, and that he for sure would have bitten the dust in that accident had he. I’d squint my eyes. He had never even been invited on this impromptu San Diego trip. I Iooked up to Chynna. There’s no way in hell I would have invited Aaron out there. Aaron was one of the first in a long line of people I’ve met who wanted to share credit on something they had nada to do with.
But it was a dead body. There was a dead body on the road. In that slow lane. Before we had crashed, Poul and I had passed one of those big yellow illegal immigration crossings signs that used to appear on the freeway whenever you were nearing the Mexican border. I think they’re gone now. So, this could have been an illegal immigrant that had been crossing the freeway, had gotten hit by a car, and was now just there, dead. I still see the dude. He was on the ground, profiled, facing up, as if in a coffin; the lane, a funeral home. And he was about sixty (?) with salt-and-pepper-hair and beard and maybe a grey suit. I mean, I couldn’t believe my eyes. And I know I wasn’t seeing things because Poul saw him too.
So, what I did was immediately swerved to avoid him, lost control of the car, got hit every which way but loose, and crashed. The VHS tapes all over the place were gifted to me by my sister-in-law when she closed her second-hand shop. They had been sitting in my trunk since who knows when. Now they were decorating the highway. One of the tapes my eyes landed on before I passed out was BACK TO THE FUTURE PART II.
Poul and I had smashed our skulls together. And I had a brain hemorrhage. I was dead. But I’m stubborn and eventually got up.
“You never got me down, Ray.” – Jake LaMotta in RAGING BULL.
Just a few days before this, I had gotten fucked up with this trio of dudes I hung out with. We were all tragic figures of some sort. Well, they were. I just romanticized tragedy. They were Peter K, Lloyd L, and that Aaron dude. Actually, the only tragic one was Lloyd who had lost his sister recently, wore the word “sad” on his shoulders, and was now doing drugs and Hi-Ho Silver’ing while at it. These were the guys I hung out with all.the.time. The people that got me out of the house like no one else could when I’d be working on this one script. A script I wanted to make into a movie and then a comic book and then completely abandoned but not until after actually finishing it. See, that was the thing. I was like I’m never gonna feel accomplished unless I actually, you know, uh, accomplish something. A.k.a. finish whatever the hell I work on. I’m sure even someone older and wiser had told me that shit, “Just finish it.” I had two completed movie scripts down, man. The first one took me forever but now I was on a roll…
…I would watch black-and-white Godard movies all day. And ‘60s spy movies. And got really into both Seijun Suzuki’s TOKYO DRIFTER and BRANDED TO KILL which I’d watch on repeat, taking notes (one time I put on TOKYO DRIFTER at Poul’s house and he, a film aficionado and former aspiring filmmaker, went, “Where do you find all these cool movies?” The Criterion Collection, Poul. The Criterion Collection. But I didn’t say that.) And then I would work on my story, which was inspired by everything I just mentioned…
It was about this aspiring musician who couldn’t get a break and meet the right people to form a band and in shopping around for like-minded folks winds up getting swept up in this totally groovy spy plot that was a tribute to pop art, all the ‘60s go-go stuff I was into (I was an aspiring Mod with no money to spend on the attire—but oh, how did I try), glam rock, X-Ray zap guns, teleportation devices, and spirals ‘cause I have an obsession with black-and-white-spirals. I called it (badly) THE SECRET NOIR (“The Secret Black? Really?”). I recently found the script. Not the movie script, mind you, but the one I had adapted to be a comic book. Thought I had lost both. That rickety-old PC I typed my fingers off on as a teen had crashed. And those floppy discs? Who knows where they wound up. I still dream of making that story into a movie. I kid myself, “If I ever have a big success, that’ll be the movie I make next! It needs a big, great budget!” I mean, I wrote this whole scooter chase sequence cut to “Friday on my Mind” by The Easybeats. There ain’t no compromise here. ‘Cause that’s all I ever do: COMPROMISE.
But every night the trio would ring me up. I’d book it from the house, hop in a car, or got into my own car and we’d roam the streets of Orange County, California (and sometimes LA).
Peter and Lloyd were already friends. And I had worked with Peter at the Boarders I mentioned. Aaron, I knew from The Block, this outdoor mall where, in 1999, a bunch of rando punk kids I wish I’d been friends with hung out. He worked at the Van’s Skate Park there and rolled up on me once when I was wearing a Subhumans tee. He showed me his Subs tattoo in return-- similar to the one I’d get later in Atlanta. Now he had ran into me while I was working at Geez Louise. But he looked different. No longer dressed like an anarcho-punk, but still missing teeth ‘cause they’d been kicked in at a hardcore show or whatever the hell he had said. Now he was dressed kind of sharp. Button up. Nice pants. In all black. He told me he worked down the street. At the In-and-Out Burger on Harbor. What?
“Dude, you know they’re all Christian? There’s bible verses at the bottom of their cups.”
One of my friends growing up, Deez, his cousin worked at an In-and-Out as an entry-level manager and made bank. And I’m talkin’ bank for a teenager. They take care of their employees. $18 bucks an hour in 1999? You kidding me? “If you don’t go to college, you’ll be flipping burgers,” I heard the old-folks saying. Well, that motherfucker makes more money than you do on retirement. I figure Aaron’s doing alright.
On a lunch break I go over there. I see Aaron outside the entrance, back in his dirty punk clothes. He’s spanging, suckering customers to give him change. He tells me he’s made over fifty dollars in a couple hours. He says let’s hang but, “Let me get out of my dirty work clothes.” Aaron goes inside the In-and-Out restroom. Few minutes later he comes out looking all spiffy, shiny, and new; his punk ‘drobe stuffed into a bag.
The rest I’ll skip ‘cause I don’t remember how the four of us all actually started hanging out together. But one night we jumped this grade school’s fence and Aaron offered us blow. I’m pretty sure it was everyone’s first go. I mean, I had only smoked weed once at this point. This stoner friend of mine named Angie who I went to Santa Ana Middle College with (at sixteen), and who had gotten me into The Doors and The Misfits and The Smiths (her three favorite bands), always encouraged me to smoke weed with her. But, nah. I kind of grew up in a bubble, or my own universe of invention, and I was content with my movies and my music and my comic books, and, well I didn’t want my parents to wig the fuck out (again; more on that later). Plus I had all this Catholic guilt. But screw this. I was in a band. I was never at home anymore. My dad and I had stopped trying to kill each other all the time mainly ‘cause I just made sure to avoid him by celebrating my last couple years as a teenager being out with friends and experiencing goddamned things instead of just learning about them from a television screen.
“If I ever catch you with marijuana, I’ll kick you out the house!,” my dad would yell.
Well, he never said anything about cocaine...
We all did huge key bumps. SNIIIIIIIIIIFFFFFFFFFF! SNIFF! SNI—II-FF! SNIFF! SNI-- whuuuuut… the fuck. This thing going down my nostril, dripping into my throat, making my mouth all numb. What is—ohhh, I gt it. Aaron later became ours and everybody else’s coke dealer. I think we all had equal addictions because of this. But days before the big crash – ha-ha, I’ve never referred to it as that, but it may stick—we’d all gone to someone’s place. It’s all foggy now, but I had ripped for the first-and-only-time cocoa puffs. Basically, weed peppered with coke out of a bong. When Peter took a rip, I couldn’t stop laughing. He thought he was on fire and ran outside of the house screaming. We had to calm him down.
So now I was all paranoid…
Oh my God. The hospital is running blood tests. This shit’s gonna show up in my system. They’re gonna know about all the fucking drugs I’ve been doing. My parents are gonna know. Oh, man. I am so fucked. Or was I? I mean, I think my parents at this point were realizing that I was way different from my much older brothers (we’re talking about 20+ years difference) and that since I’m the first one born in the states that, well, dealing with me was gonna be a little bit different and that I took no advice and kind of did what I wanted without permission. I had already been arrested at fifteen. But I graduated out of high school two-years before due date, so they couldn’t hold anything against me. I also always used the band as an excuse: “I’m going to practice in Ventura.” That was usually a two-to-three-day venture. I had a job (I always had a job, since the age of twelve or thirteen). I paid for my own things. I didn’t drink. What’s there to worry about?
If anyone found out anything about any drugs, no one mentioned a word. They were totally devastated because of the accident. But I’m far from a hypochondriac and someone that can’t handle too many unnecessary restrictions so I couldn’t be in that hospital bed any longer. Against the medics’ wishes, I ripped off whatever IV bags were stuck to my veins, got up, got dressed and my mom took me to the junk yard. I can’t even describe my car’s make-over.
Poul thought I had died. He said when he saw me being carted into the ambulance he thought, “That’s it. He’s gone.”
Months later, during band practice, Poul abruptly stopped drumming and let out a huge scream. That’s when he learned he had cracked his ribs in the accident.
He had said, “My cousin’s a lawyer and she basically said the only person I can sue is you, which I’m not going to do.”
“Can we sue the car manufacturer?”
“Why?”
“The air bags never ejected.”
No one did, tho. Or if someone did, I never caught wind.
One thing, tho. One thing. There was one miraculous thing that happened here. Before the accident I had a limp. I walked all funny. And now? If you could believe it, could walk just fine.

11?
thanks for the fanfic day ask!
11. What’s a fanfic idea you haven’t done yet?
I posted a screenshot of my wip file here but to dig a little deeper into some of those Danny Phantom documents, I haven’t yet done:
AU where ghosts looks like humans outside of the Ghost Zone and Jazz stumbles upon a full ghost Danny trying to hide in an alleyway one night, and convinces him to come home with her since he doesn’t have anywhere else to go. He has to survive living with the Fentons and meeting the few people Jazz regularly brings over to the house - her unlikely friend Spike, Sam and her best friend Tucker, the football players she tutors, and Valerie who is honestly just there for the tech after her father loses his job because of ghosts
Fully human Dance AU that had super fleshed fleshed notes for a multi chaptered fic (and I did actually do some art for it while I was still working at the dance studio but I’m not sure all of it got uploaded to tumblr?)
Fic where the Fentons rescue a nearly-unconscious Dani from a ghost attack, bring her home, and then she has to deal with waking up with the over-enthusiastic Fentons hovering over her when waking up because sure they’re friendly now while they think she’s human but she doesn’t trust how long this will last
15 pages of 100 word drabble wips
Fic about the ramifications of people dying in Amity Park after the Accident, and the increasing number of ghosts that people recognize coming out of the GZ
10 pages of alternating scenes about the Fenton Family relationships from Jack and Vlad’s perspective in a weird sort of Father’s (and Not Father’s) Day fic
plot bunny adapted from jeanette9a: Danny runs away when he first gets his ghost powers. He and Vlad have never met. But Vlad finds Danny lurking around in the forest around his castle. When he happens to observe the boys struggles with his powers, he decides to help Danny. But after a while it's time for the reunion. And that turned out to be a sticky situation when your step dad wants you to kill your own dad. What would you do?
French Future Fic (FFF) - 20 pages of notes for what would be my long chaptered fic. Where Danny accidentally kills Sam via friendly fire in a fight with Vlad and, devastated, runs away to another continent, refusing to contact friends or family for years as he tries to put the ghost stuff behind him. But it doesn’t work because ghosts are everywhere. And Tucker, who has never given up on trying to catch up with Danny, joined a branch of the GIW and ends up developing tech and trying to train a better generation of agents. When he finally meets up with Danny, he convinces him not only to not run again, but to come see what he makes of the new recruits. Which ends up with Danny working as an unofficial all-knowing consultant for the new team while trying to repair his relationship with Tucker and stay out of the GIW’s clutches
A few more Gray Ghost Week prompts which were going to be more in the Nerves (Ghost Hunting Camp AU) and For the Sake of the Song (1920s Superphantom crossover) universes, plus a Hunger Games AU where Valerie knows she shot Danny, she knows she did, but instead of crumpling to the ground to the sound of a cannon, he turns, locks eyes with her, and starts running her way -
58 pages of ideas that haven’t gotten expanded out enough to get their own docs yet
Move-In Security of Amity Park (or MISAP), a new city program courtesy of Mayor Foley. Outside pov, Post PP.
Belated bday fic about Valerie and her fractured relationship with the A Listers (beginning of the wip posted here)
Alex Rider crossover where they become international pen pals for a school project and wonder if they can vaguely vent about some of their respective problems to each other without spilling secrets only to realize that they may both be dealing with some truly awfully ridiculous stuff (wait so you’ve been nearly killed several times by the guy who wants to adopt you as his son?? me too???)
40 pages of more ideas for Apricity, probably including enough complete sentence-stories to post more chapters (note to self...)
14 pages of ideas for “short” things that wanted to grow longer than I had capacity for at the time, apparently
Fic where Danny is battling Spectra in Fenton form, the Fentons barge in to save him, and Spectra realizes just how much misery she could feed off of if she targets them instead to the point that they’ll only get out alive if Danny outs himself by using his powers
6k worth of notes of a 1920s Swing AU superphantom crossover of epic proportions co-created with Chynna (I don’t know what your username is these days ahaha)
Fic where Danny was being held prisoner in some abandoned ghost-proofed warehouse? And gets rescued by a teenager who has absolutely no clue what is going on but has to follow the orders of a half starved kid talking about ghosts in order to get them both out of there before it’s too late
Danny in a hospital because his ghost half is killing him and no one can figure out why
AU where Maddie worries about Jazz who sounds like she’s having full blown conversations with her dead brother when she thinks no one else is around to hear
Ambitious idea I don’t feel up to writing exploring a Danny who hates the fact that after his growth spurt he starts to look and sound like Dan. To the point that he takes down the mirror in his room and stops talking unless absolutely necessary. Sam and Tucker, of course, understand, but no one else does.
Plus some oneshots I wanted to expand into full fics (Nerves, Who I am, Introuvable, etc). And the few chaptered fics that haven’t been updated in a while because I haven’t written anything in a while whoops (Teenage Ghost Punk, Footballer’s Wife, UltraViolet)
Plus the other, you know, 50 documents of superphantom and other fandom wips that I wish I wish I wish I could write haha

Cramp’s Comic Recommendations For Fans Of Classic Rock And Co.
Tumblr media
Allright here we go. This is my current list of comics/manga/graphic novels you might enjoy if you’re into classic rock. Before we get started I’d just like to let you all know:
- This list is far from being complete. I’m sure there are many more groovy comics out there that I’m simply not aware of yet so if you have any suggestions feel free to add them :)
- I know I said “Classic Rock” but some of my choices may drift into other musical directions
- Needless to say I do not own any of the following images. They all belong to their rightfull owners and I’ll use them as visual reference material only.
- Sorry for eventual misspelling
Let’s go ^^
1. Bob Dylan Revisited
Tumblr media
Let’s start with an obvious choice. This is a collection of 13 well-known Dylan Songs, each of them graphically interpreted by a different artist. The most striking feature therefore is the high variety of different art styles. Some of them are cartoony, some are very abstract while others are almost photo realistic.
Dylan’s mesmerizing lyrics have always been inspirational and these beautiful depictions truly are a sight to see.
Including works of Thierry Murat, Lorenzo Mattotti, Nicolas Nemiri, François Avril, Jean-Claude Götting, Christopher,  Bézian, Dave McKean, Alfred, Raphaëlle Le Rio, Maël Le Mae, and Henri Meunier, Gradimir Smudju, Benjamin Flao, Jean-Phillippe Bramanti and Zep.
Tumblr media
Zep’s take on “Not Dark Yet”
Tumblr media
Jean-Phillippe Bramanti’s interpretation of “Knocking On Heaven’s Door”
Definitely worth checking out not only for Bob Dylan Fans.
2. Baby’s In Black” by Arne Bellstorf
Tumblr media
I’ve seen several people in the Beatles fandom complain about the lack of Stuart Sutcliffe material when it comes to early Beatles history.
Well, here it is: a graphic novel that focuses on the relationship between Stuart Sutcliffe and fotographer Astrid Kirchherr who took the very first professional photos of the Beatles during their time in Hamburg (1960-61).
Told mostly from Astrid’s point of view this comic presents itself in a grey and melancholic tone that fits the rather sad story. Bellstorf’s drawings are simplified and charming (they remind me of early sixties children book illustrations which suits the setting’s time period)
Tumblr media
If you’re interested in early Beatles history (especially their Hamburg days) you should give this one a try.
3. Blue Monday by Chynna Clugston Flores
Tumblr media
I really wish I had known about this amazing comic series a few years earlier, not only because this is a slice of life/coming of age story with teenage characters who are actually likeable and relateable but also because “Blue Monday” is an overall highly entertaining depiction of early nineties teen culture/rebellion in an American suburb that comes with a lot of references to Britpop, mod culture, Buster Keaton movies and Adam Ant (to name only a few).
To quote the author herself: “It’s like Archie on crack, with cursing and smokes”.
The art style of Chynna Clugston Flores is very vivid and expressive and has a certain stylistic touch of anime/manga (like a lot of comics from the early 2000s). I also really enjoy all of the graphic fashion details in this one. Plus, this is the first comic with it’s own soundtrack and that’s always a nice bonus.
Tumblr media
I’d recommend “Blue Monday” for fans of Britpop, Punk, New Wave and early 1990′s culture.
4. Punk Rock And Trailer Parks by Derf Backderf
Tumblr media
Another story about growing up in American small town madness, this time set in 1980s gritty Punk subculture of the former rubber city of Akron, Ohio. Protagonist Otto who likes to refer to himself as “The Baron” becomes fascinated with Punk after attending a Ramones concert. He meets several Pubk icons (thus as The Clash, The Plasmatics, rock journalist Lester Bangs and many more) and becomes someting of a local punk star himself.
Derf Backderf (who is best known for his highly acclaimed graphic novel “My Friend Dahmer” and his Eisner award winning comic “Trashed”) created a comic that is as “raw and dirty as punk itself”. His art style is an unique combination of expressionism, underground cartoons and punk magazines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Punk Rock And Trailer Parks” is a must-have for punk fans (especially if you’re into The Ramones and The Clash. It made me a huge fan of both of them).
5. “CASH - I See A Darkness” and “Nick Cave - Mercy On Me” by Reinhard Kleist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two biographical graphic novels by Reinhard Kleist, both of them tell the story of a fascinating personality in rock history and both of them are incredibly well drawn. Kleist’s art is full of life and movement and very atmospheric due to his impressive use of stark contrasts.
I personally love his semirealistic way of drawing people and I’d highly suggest you to check out his other works too. He made a lot of biographical comics that really amazed me.
Tumblr media
CASH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cave
Definetly worth reading. Not only for Johnny Cash and Nick Cave fans.
6. Nowhere Men by Eric Stephenson, Nate Bellegarde, Jordie Bellaire and Fonografiks
Tumblr media
I talked about this one a while ago but I’ll gladly do it again since it’s just too cool. “Nowhere Men” is set in an alternative past/present and future where scientists became as popular as pop stars (catchphrase “Science is the new Rock n` Roll”) but somewhere along the way something definetly went wrong.
The hype of science shares obvious similarities with the beatlemania of the 60s and the founding of Apple back then. Furthermore, the characters are partly inspired by well-known personalities of Rock history. There are many more or less hidden nods and references to musical popculture wich is why I put it on this list.
Nowhere Men is a thrilling sci-fi dystopian that requires an observant reader because there is a lot of jumping back and forth i time and inbetween information. The art style is realistic and full of very vibrant colours.
Tumblr media
I found myself reading this multiple times to get all of the details in the world building. A thoughtful and brilliant writing indeed.
7. P.I.L. by Mari Yamazaki
Tumblr media
Japan 1983: 17-year-old Nanami couldn’t be more frustrated. Her grandfather loves to spend all of their household money on useless luxury junk and her strict school criticizes her messy hairstyle. Caught between teenage rebellion and responsibility as she tries different side jobs to earn at least a little bit of money, Nanami also has a thing for punk music and overall everything originated from England.
P.I.L. tells the story of conflict between two generations who aren’t as different as they might seem. Sometimes funny and heartwarming, sometimes with a bit of drama this is a charming slice of life/ coming of age josei with a more simplistic but aesthetical pleasing art style.
Tumblr media
as the title might suggest, Nanami is a big fan of P.I.L. and other bands of the punk, neo punk and new wave movement such as The Stranglers and The Killing Joke
8. Yellow Submarine by Bill Morrison
Tumblr media
A comic adaptation of an animated film such as Yellow Submarine? Yeah, I was skeptical at first too but hear me out: This is really great. Morrison did an amazing job at capturing the trippy and psychedelic feeling of the legendary Beatles film. As the 1968 film used the medium of animation as an actual form of art to accomplish things only animation can do, Morrison did the same thing and used the advantages of the comic medium to accomplish things only comics can do. And it works. It really works.
Every single page of this colourful book has a different panel layout. Some of them are so beautiful and creative that I’d love to have a full-size poster version of them :’D
Tumblr media
If you liked the film, if you love the psychedelic age, you’ll probably like the comic too.
9. In The Pines by Erik Kriek
Tumblr media
“In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines...”
5 Murder Ballads, some might call them dark Country Music, each of them beautifully illustrated by Erik Kriek. Atmospheric, dark and gritty and always on point to match the spine-chilling western-like storytelling of these ballads, great for fans of horror literature a la E.A.Poe.
Tumblr media
10. Andy - A Factual Fairy Tale by Typex
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Allright folks this is it:
Typex’s “Andy” is by far one of the best comics/graphic novels I’ve ever red. It defenitely is my personal favourite reading of 2019 (and tbh I kinda doubt anything will top this anytime soon)
This is more than just a biographical take on of the most enigmatic pop-art artists of 20th centuary’s America, this is a portrait of the 20th centuary itself. There are so many references to art, history, literature, music and more that I could fill a book counting them all. And of course this is a monument for the medium of comic itself. Typex really managed to show what comic’s are capable of (At this point I’m really sorry I can’t explain it better I’m not good in writing stuff like this yet...)
Visually one of the most appealing things are the different art styles Typex manages to pull off so well for every chapter in Warhol’s life because each of them are a mirror of their zeitgeist. The introduction of Warhol’s childhood during the 30s is drawn in a cartoony style of old news paper comic strips. The chapter of 1967 has a psychedelic edge. The chapter of the early 60s shows similarities with the works of Roy Liechtenstein
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So many icons from the 1930s-1980s have a cameo in this graphic novel it’s just amazing. If you’re even remotely interested in anything of this time period you’d definitely should read this. (seriously, READ THIS). But at this point I’d also like to mention that this comic does not shy away from showing very explicit content and sensetive topics (please keep in mind this has a mature rating for a reason)
Yeah so I couldn’t give this piece of art enough praise. It is absolutely brilliant, a masterpiece in every sense and word.I wasn’t too aware of Typex before but appearentely he also did a graphic novel on Rembrandt. I’m gonna read this too.
Some honorable mentions:
Tumblr media
California Dreamin` by Penelope Bagieu
I haven’t red this one yet so I can’t say anything more about it. But I wanted to let you know that a graphic novel about the life of Cass Elliot exists.
Tumblr media
Before Watchmen: Silk Spectre by Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner
One of the prequels of the legendary “Watchmen” by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. It’ “only” an honorable mention because you’ll have to be familiar with the Watchmen universe to fully get all of the story. This prequel focuses on Laurie Jupeczyk, the second Silk Spectre and her own adventures during 1967, the summer of love in San Francisco.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hip Hop Family Tree by Ed Piskor
Another one I haven’t fully red yet, but so far I’m loving it. It basically tells the history of Rap and Hip Hop from the early 70s to the mid 80s. The art style is intentionally old-school wich really fits it’s tone and setting.
Tumblr media
Fritz The Cat by Robert Crumb
I suppose I can’t make a list like this without at least mentioning an absolut icon of the underground comix movement. Crumb created the adventures of this nasty junky cat during the 60s. Fritz can be seen as a satirical mirror of counter-culture’s zeitgeist.
Tumblr media
and speaking of Crumb, his “Heroes of Blues, Jazz and Country” trading cards are neat too...
Tumblr media
allright that’s it for now. like I said, if you have anymore suggestions, feel free to add ^^

Death | Obituary - Cause Of Death
It will undoubtedly occur, and thank heavens it has: Sloans Lake Managed Care, a Denver-based back up plan, has become the first U.S. organization to pay for otherworldly mediations.
?We made this program since we felt that a missing piece of the treatment of medicinal services, from a repayment perspective, was profound,? says Neil Waldron, the company?s president and CEO. ?It costs nothing [for companies] to include and it?s actually an ignored piece of the general treatment of an individual.?
The greatest test Sloans Lake looked from the outset was characterizing precisely what the item would be. The organization composed a team of delegates from Denver's otherworldly network to assist, and at last thought of two expansive definitions for outpatient directing administrations: Spiritual Guidance, which assists people with bettering comprehend their profound lives and how that identifies with their lives overall; and Spiritual Counseling, which fuses convictions and confidence into treatment to support people, families, or gatherings adapt to specific emergencies or the general weights of life.
Sloans Lake at that point set up a system of nondenominational suppliers for individuals and set up a $10 co-installment for six visits for every schedule year.
Having propelled the advantages program barely a year back, Waldron expects around 100 clients out of a participation of 70,000 to utilize it this year. ?It?s an advantage that is not widely used on the grounds that it will in general be utilized around an individual emergency,? says Waldron. He?s been satisfied by the positive response of the profound network everywhere to the new program, however ?we haven't heard any response from the insurance agencies. I'm somewhat bewildered by the quietness.?
Dr. Herbert Benson, leader of the Mind/Body Medical Institute of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center isn't astonished. He has dedicated a lot of time to advocate the estimation of otherworldliness and recuperating in medication to insurance agencies around the country. ?They are tuning in, however they don?t have plans to execute anything yet. Any new activity draws reluctance from individuals who just practice routine measures,? he said. ?It?s simply a question of time, yet one needs to keep up the endeavors of instructing individuals.?
Individuals need and need to bite the dust with a reasonable still, small voice, with an inclination that the weights of this life are past, and with an information that their desires will be conceded,? composes Megory Anderson, a scholar, instructor, and liturgist who runs the philanthropic Sacred Dying Foundation in San Francisco. Right now useful asset, the creator shares customs she's planned throughout the years to help people during the time spent kicking the bucket. Thomas Moore has composed an attentive foreword.
Numerous individuals from the Baby Boom age have made unique ceremonies for their relationships and the births of their youngsters. Presently they are hoping to bring similar sorts of profound measurements to the time encompassing the withering of a friend or family member. Anderson gives a lot of thoughts in Sacred Dying, starting with the production of a consecrated space for the individual who is going to traverse to the opposite side. She recommends joining strict images that may have importance for the person. She at that point talks about the significance of purifying the spot; containing the space; diffusing outside clamors; and fusing scents, music, and supplications.
Two of the most extravagant parts are on customs to discharge passionate sorrow and ceremonies to comfort the body. In the principal, Anderson uncovers the requirement for the perishing individual to relinquish weights of outrage, blame, and incomplete business. In the second, she shows the recuperating excellence of touch. Sitting vigil is a respect that requests worship and receptiveness to what emerges at the time. The withering individual's desires are constantly foremost.
Consecrated Dying additionally remembers sections for kicking the bucket alone, finishing life support, and the period after death until the burial service. Anderson finishes up with fitting readings, supplications, sonnets, melodies, and writings for use in the ceremonies.

Wow, so this is a bit exciting! I know I’ve been quiet for just over a week now, but things have been going on ooc that’ve been super stressful. BUT!!! I just came back from my semi stress induced hiatus and found that I surpassed 100 followers! So that’s kinda’ neat af! So it’s time for some shout outs, ay? God I hope I don’t forget any of y’all but my memory has been a disaster so if I do I’m so fuckin’ sorry and it ain’t anything personal I promise! So without further ado...Philip Defranco vc: SUP YA BEAUTIFUL BASTARDS, I HOPE YOU’RE HAVIN’ A FANTASTIC FRIDAY WELCOME BACK TO MY RP BLOG AND LET’S JUST JUMP INTO IT!
And the first person I want to talk about today, by far one of the most requested people in my life is the girl behind @zombcy. For those of you who don’t know, Reed and I actually met back when season two of Stranger Things basically first dropped and bonded over Will and El and the friendship sort of just went off from there. From that moment on it went from IC discussions that were sometimes hours long to ooc discussions that could sometimes be even longer-- so much so that we actually met up in person together and had a fucking blast together. Needless to say Reed is definitely one of my soul sisters for life and she makes me emotional in that I am so honored and lucky every day to know someone like her and I genuinely don’t know where I would be right now if I didn’t have her. So thank you for being you, Reed. Your portrayal of Will is absolutely breath-taking and the life and effort you put into him truly shows and I love you so much.
Then in slightly more insane news, let’s talk about this situation involving two friends who kind of drifted for a while and then somehow managed to find each other by chance in the rp community again. And the person I’m referring to is @voicemade. Charles, you are the worlds most handsomest man and a budding witch with a whole future of magic and enchantment ahead of him. I thought of you every day and missed you so much during the months we parted ways and I swear to god this time, now that we’ve found each other I refuse to let go of you because my life is so much sweeter, lighter, and brighter with you in it. You make me laugh, blush, smile-- you’re just such a good guy and an excellent friend with such a passion for the characters you write and I wish one day to be half the writer you are. I really fucking love you and I’m so glad to have you in my life!
AND FROM THAT, I WANNA’ SHARE SOME MORE PEOPLE I LOVE TODAY AND TODAY IN AWESOME BROUGHT TO YOU BY SEATGEEK...
@lovermade Bri, you are an absolute shining light okay? And your take on Eddie is absolutely flawless. Whether you know it or not, you are beautiful inside and out-- your eyes alone knock my socks off. You’re fucking hilarious. You immensely talented-- you have a wonderful gift and you’ve been getting me through one of the toughest points in my life and I only hope that I can do the same for you. Because you deserve all things good and lovely and kind. And I just hope that life will be kind to you and always be kind to you. You are truly one of my best friends-- and you’re another soul sister of mine. No matter what your doubts may tell you: please don’t ever change, because everything about you is so bright and wonderful. I ALSO LOVE YOU.
@packedmind LISTEN THE FUCC TO ME ELI, YOU CRACK ME THE FUCK UP AND I JUST REALLY LOVE YOU. I think honestly you have such a creative way of viewing characters from all angles and you make plotting and writing a lot of fun and you’re just such a teddy bear. I feel like I can tell you anything and you would immediately try to understand and just do whatever you could. I just hope you know that if you ever need somebody, I got you already? It’s an honor to be able to call you a writing partner. I will always be grateful!
@punchesback YOU!!! ARE!!! ABSOLUTELY!!! FLAWLESS!!! AND I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! I love your Joyce AND your Lucas and I love that we can talk for hours about character theories, opinions, and plot ideas together constantly. Because I love knowing that there are people here who are just as passionate about these characters as I am. You’re so fucking smart and you’re so easy to talk to. Your speaking voice alone is just so warm and welcoming and your writing even comes of that way too-- like a paint brush that glides across a canvas with water colors. It’s such a gift, truly, to be your friend. Please keep on truckin’.
@dartmouthed YOU HAVE THE CUTEST VOICE IN VC CHATS AND ALSO I LOVE YOUR WRITING AND WE SHOULD DO MORE OF THAT. I’ve always adored you, even from afar because I tend to be the worlds shyest person of 2018, maybe ever. But I love talking to you and I really just enjoy seeing you on my dash and watching you pour that silly curly haired boy a big tall glass of goofy mixed with heart. I love your portrayal and I love you so fucking much. Also your laugh is 10/10 would make you laugh just to hear you laugh.
@hawkinslead / @quaevivit CHYNNA!!!!!!! I FUCKING LOVE YOU SO MUCH!!!! AND I LOVE YOUR WHOLESOME CANADIAN HEART. You are a true ride or die and that goes both ways. You’re generous, beautiful, sweet and an amazing writer and some of my best memories over the past few months have been with you. You’ve gotten me through some pretty rough times and honestly I hope that you’ll be a friend for life. And I think you will be. Because I know even when we get busy and can’t talk for a few days for whatever reason: we can pick up where we left off and that will always be something I’m grateful for. I want to talk to you about collecting records and taking silly polaroid pictures and tease you about Degrassi for the rest of my life. I love you always, alright?
@loyaltyburdened You will always, always get a special shout out because you were the very first person to interact with my Eleven back when I started my blog in October and honestly after not having written or role-played in years, that’s something I’m never going to forget and it still sticks with me to this day. I was so nervous and you melted away every concern I had. I am so fucking grateful with you because I think without you...I may have just not even bothered try. I might have very well just given up. And then I would have missed out on meeting a bunch of incredible people (including you!) so I am forever thankful for you. Always. Thank you so much for giving me that chance...thank you so much for being so kind and welcoming.
And just some final little honorable mentions to: @boybard @derryfright @byerstrange @boyfading @boyfound @shezooms @floatedtoo @derryrich
And if you wanna’ see the full versions of any blogs I mentioned today-- anything at all, links are in the description just above! And that’s where I’m going to end today’s follow forever and remember if you liked what you read today HIT THAT LIKE BUTTON and if you’re new to this blog be sure to hit that SUBSCRIBE FOLLOW button and as always my name is trustbitchin I love yo’ faces and I’ll see you tomorrow!

Writer Notes: The Wicked + The Divine Christmas Annual #1
Tumblr media
Spoilers, obv.
There's a backbone of Specials which I consider essential to WicDiv's plot. This is one of the main reasons we've ended up putting the Specials trade into the schedule before the last trade in the series rather than after it – as fractally as WicDiv is structured, this is information you should know before the end rather than after it.
They also work off a weird time-switched aspect – so they're read at the time of publication (for single readers) and also at the latter point in the story (for trade readers). In other words, they're revealing different information and to different import depending on whether you read them as they're released or as they're collected.
Which is an interesting challenge.
The Christmas Annual is the first Special which doesn't work like this. Looking at the schedule, we thought it healthier to add an extra month to the gap between arcs. The next arc is six issues, as is the one after that. We decided to add another special, and then saw what would be fun to do.
This was a boon for me. The problem is never not having enough material, y'know? The difference between something I'd like to do and something that is essential I do is narrow. Jamie had the idea of going back to periods we skipped and showing some of their key moments. I initially kicked against it a little, but when the thing I was trying proved too hard to make work, it seemed the simplest thing to do for me, and seemed a cute gift to the fans in a year that's been pretty fucking brutal.
(That we rarely get happier than bittersweet speaks to me, really. All happiness is tinged with sadness. “I love you” is married to “and one day we will all be dead”.)
But it was also a fun time. We got a gang of our favourite people together and did a bunch of short stories. Most of all, I got to write a bunch of people I haven't written for a while. I've missed them.
How were the stories chosen? Rapidly! The main limitation was not choosing anything which would spoil anything in Imperial Phase: Part Two. The Specials are designed to be spoiler-free for any trade which isn't released when it's released. We also wanted to show a bunch of kissing and similar social activities, as for a book which has as much emotional and sexual stuff driving the characters, there's relatively little on panel.
I wrote 'em, showed them to the gang, and then we worked out who we could ask to draw them. I was expecting I would remove several of them, but they all ended up going in, with tweaks in some cases in the story's focus. In terms of the characters selected, I definitely paid attention to characters who had relatively little screen time – so, Lucifer, Inanna and Tara.
Jamie's Cover
Using a bought Photoshop filter, this actually a lot more work than Jamie was expecting. It is wonderful though. It is to my eternal regret we never actually arranged it as a Christmas Merchandise thing. This is a delight to me. Really, we're aware that Jamie doesn't do many playful covers, so this was an opportunity we grasped with both hands. For all the iconic drama, there's also a playfulness to WicDiv that doesn't always show up on the covers.
Kris Anka's Cover
It's a Christmas Annual in the mode of a British Annual – in that these are annuals released at Christmas rather than having Christmas as a major theme per se. Anyway, despite all that, Inanna and Baal in hot make-out beneath the mistletoe is an absolute joy. I am pleased we get to do this.
IFC
The main editorial note to Designer Sergio was “Tackier! Tackier!”
The photo was taken in North London cocktail bar “Every Cloud.” Jamie is probably drinking some manner of Old Fashioned. I think I'm drinking some kind of Buttered Rum-containing cocktail. Chrissy draped the only decorations she could find over our heads.
1-6
Kris Anka! Jen Bartel helped out on inks on this as well, due to time constraints. Kris is currently on a Marvel Exclusive, so we had to get permission to do this story. Marvel said yes, so thanks to them enormously.
Yes, if you examine the timeline, Valhalla was certainly erected quickly. And yes, “Erected quickly” is a major theme in this story.
It's one of the lighter stories in the issue – obviously delineating what we know about Baal to this moment says a lot, and the same for Inanna.
I tried to write the scripts to the artists, but I also was interested in leaving it open for them to express things in their own ways. Generally speaking, I let the artists choose how to show the characters in a sex scene, as I want to see their own interpretation. It was a delight to see Kris go as far as he did here.
We did wonder whether we'd be okay with showing hard cocks. We're told that hard cocks are fine, but ejaculation is the problematic limit. I'm glad it's not an issue. This is a hot scene, but it's primarily a romantic one.
I love what Matt is doing with the panel on page 5 – the pinks and purples of Inanna here.
Baals expression on the first panel is very funny, as is the confidence in panel 3 of it.
7-8-9-10
There's seven stories, but several were just two pages. We realised the best way to do it would be to group the shorter of the long ones with the short ones so all collaborators get 5-6 pages each. This makes it much easier with trade royalties down the line, and organising 5 artists (plus colourists and flatters) is a significantly easier one than organising 7 (and their associated collaborators).
This is the first of the stories coloured by Tamra Bonvillain. I've never worked with Tamra before, but we loved her work, approached her, and she said yes. Thanks for joining us on this journey.
The artist here is Rachael Stott, who is probably best known for her Doctor Who work, but is about to do Motherland for Vertigo with Si Spurrier, which looks excellent.
There was quite a lot of careful balloon work here, to try and guide the eye and provide the necessary exposition (or really, reminders – all this is building upon or just showing events that have been alluded to earlier.) The eye-guiding is key – for example, due to a minor quirk of the first two panels, the Shard is hidden by the column which means that the view in the second panel feels instantly wrong. We end up disguising the shard with the dialogue so it's far less noticeable.
This event is alluded to by Lucifer in issue 3 of WicDiv.
The penthouse is the one we see in issue 1, which I presume is rented by the Pantheon for their purposes.
Writing Lucifer after all this time was a pleasure. Well, pleasure may be the wrong word. She's herself, and she's always very able to show bits of herself. Lucifer says things that no one else in the cast does, which is obviously one of her huge problems.
Yes, the first panel of page 9 did make me think of an OBJECTION! style WicDiv Phoenix-Wright-esque game.
The panel is also a place where we really had to do the work to put this in continuity – the obvious assumption would be that Baal is pissed off about Lucifer sleeping with Sakhmet, which is only really a minor cause of WTF-ness.
That Lucifer explicitly fucked with Baal and Inanna was hinted at early in WicDiv and made explicit in WicDiv 23. Inanna didn't consider the relationship exclusive, as he doesn't see why anyone would automatically assume a romantic relationship is exclusive. Inanna's great weakness is not always realising that everyone is like him.
The “You're a bad person” ties off why Lucifer and Sakhmet never slept together many times, also mentioned in issue 3. Sakhmet, I suspect, just doesn't like the complications and drama. She is deeply averse to complications.
The last three panels are classic comedy steady-angle shots. That the sprinklers aren't visible led to adding an alarm sound at lettering, to avoid the possible assumption that Baal made it rain indoors or something.
Reading this I find myself thinking about Lucifer in the Special versus Lucifer in the Annual – in the sense that we're seeing her much more humanly, which is leaning into what makes her comic (and awful). The last three panels are not ones you could imagine in The Faust Act, as seen through Laura's star eyes. Nice fucked off expression in the last panel from Rachael.
11-12-13-14-15
Chynna Clugston Flores is just one of my indie comic crushes. Blue Monday is basically one of those key links between 90s and 00s comics. Bryan Lee O'Malley pitched Scott Pilgrim as Blue Monday meets Dragon Ball Z. We pitched Phonogram and Blue Monday meets Hellblazer. She's a wonder.
As such, writing for her was a dream, and I was explicitly writing for her. While this is much more rigid in terms of panel shapes than Chynna would write for herself (the steady angle on the two people in the front seat is very much me trying to write a sort of claustrophobic talking heads kind of set-up) but I'm really exploring a very Chynna type place.
I've been thinking of Dionysus as a “Umar” for a while. When thinking up Dio, the image of writer Umar Ditta leading the Thought Bubble dancefloor was definitely in my mind, and I thought it'd be fun if they share a name, despite being very different dudes. (Not least that Umar could bench Dionysus now.) I asked Umar, and he said yes, so Umar he is. His first comic Untethered has just come out, and is well worth your attention.
This is the second sort of story in the special. One is just showing some key things which impacted the rest of the book, which were usually sexy funtimes. The other was showing some key relationships in the pre-pantheon lives. We've said that Dio was a friend of Baph and Morrigan, but never actually showed what that meant. It was good to get it here.
For those studying the timeline, this is the same day as Hazel become Amaterasu. It would also be the same day Dio takes a photo of Morrigan, and Cameron sits in the tunnel waiting for Morrigan. Busy day!
If I call out my fave Chynna moments, we're going to be here forever. Cameron with his sign on the rain is a joy. Honestly, this is such an odd thing – it makes me imagine what a Blue Monday set in the Midlands would be like.
There was a panic when page 12 arrived and I thought that Chynna had (for some reason) reversed all the seating orders in the car and had the car riding on the wrong side of the road. This is obviously a disaster, because the only way this story works is the characters' speaking order is based upon where they're sitting. But then we realised that the page had been flipped in the dropbox for some reason. Phew.
The quote is from Young Avengers 13, which came out a week or two before this arrived. Yes, I know.
(The question who wrote YA13 in this universe, when Kieron Gillen's career ended with Phonogram: Rue Britannia, is open.)
Page 13 was designed to be a mood break of the lived-in autobio, and Chynna really goes for it, in terms of the leaves and the panel breaking. Not using techniques in the whole piece makes them especially meaningful when they turn up. Tamra also did wonders in the colouring, going for the spooky autumnal reds, teals and purples.
(Tamra and Matt basically split the issue near 50:50.)
This is definitely a more Morrigan way of publicising gigs rather than standing outside shitty clubs and passing out flyers.
The WHAT!? panel is everything I could have hoped for.
The “Oh god. He puns. Morrigan fucked a punner. A wet punner's in my car.” immediately made me feel that I'm trying to channel a Warren Ellis character.
The off-panel MOTHERFUCKER is also a delight.
16-17-18
Emma's one of my favourite people, but I haven't worked with her since a B-side in the second issue of Phonogram: The Singles Club, with a Kate Bush short story. (EDIT: Plus in the Young Avengers Afterparty, which I’d blanked. This is the second time that’s happened to an artist from that. Which, given the time period I was writing that, is unsurprising). So it's lovely to get back with her, and she does some of my favourite work in the Special. Do go and have a look at her Breaks, which she draws and co-writes.
When Tara has had so little panel time, trying to work out how to approach her is key – and Emma manages to find a place which is clearly her, but also informed by Tula's iconic take. Matt also brings us much of those choices to the page in the colours.
It's useful, as this story almost acts as a prequel to issue 13. It's essentially the first time Tara pitches what she wants to do to Ananke, a moment which is at least alluded to in 13.
I wrote the story originally as two pages – specifically, the last two pages. I talked about it with Editorial Assistant Katie, and she noted it's a shame we never actually see Tara happy ever. Which struck me as true, and a problem – at least in part this Special is about showing different sorts and times of happiness. So I added the first page, which is my best pitch for Tara at her most positive. This is the unspoken stuff that's under the surface in issue 13, and Tara talking about the drive is one of her main bits of happiness. I talk about how the cast are all me in different ways? Tara definitely includes the part of me which never feels better than after having written something I think is good. I've certainly done the “if get a disease which means I have six months to live, have I got time to finish writing WicDiv?” maths.
Much like issue 13, I wrote considerably more captions than are used on the first page. You write it like a diary entry and then edit to the core.
I always say that an artist can make the script their own, and that I try to write to the minimum number of panels. Of all the artists in the script, Emma's the one who added most panels. This looks great, and is very much a part of her style.
Quick call-out to Clayton in the second panel of page 17: that tiny string of notes positioned either side of those captions is beyond perfect.
The last page is all kinds of sad. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I'm pleased with how the masks work on the page.
19-20
Second Rachael story. She's an enormous Lucifer fan, so was very excited to do this.
This is as simple as the stories get, in terms of a tiny yet meaningful continuity insert. This was there already, but I felt underlining it and reminding people of it at this point in the narrative is meaningful for obvious reasons.
(I had things I wanted to do in Imperial Phase II which I never found space for – or when I did find space, felt off and wrong.)
Writing Laura captions again after all this time was definitely a thing which took a while to find again. But I liked it.
(Spangly New Thing has captions to the fore again, for various reasons, so them as a formalist element is certainly on my mind.)
21-22-23-24-25-26
This absolutely was formative Indie Crush mode. Carla Speed McNeil's Finder was one of my initial loves when I came into comics in the early 00s. It's just astounding stuff. I'd suggest starting with Mystery Story, I suspect, but there's two big omnibuses of it, and I'd recommend just getting them. She's continuing doing other Finder stories alongside her work elsewhere.
It was originally 5 pages, but Carla suggested an extra page. I'd deliberately left an extra page space in the issue, in case anyone wanted more space... and Carla grabbed it. Good work.
When writing this, I was thinking of Carla's storytelling... but I also realised that a part of Carla's storytelling is to warp and make her own. Seeing what she would do with my script was a big part. I wanted the Carla magic applied, and she did – the extra page is a big part of that.
Notice how Tamra uses the palettes to distinguish the two different settings. Eleanor in the dark and Hazel in the light seems pretty useful, right?
That Lucifer and Amaterasu were friends and knew each other were one of the elements of the background I never had a chance to really run with, for obvious reasons. In the same way as I wanted to do some Dio/Baph pre-scenes, doing a Lucifer/Amaterasu: The Early Years appealed.
H's fanart was mentioned in issue 15, I believe.
As much as it's a dual story, it's really more about Lucifer. Amaterasu may not even appear to really aware of how much she's been slighted in the story. Or maybe she is? It is Eleanor's perspective. This is also the first dialogue we've ever had as Eleanor, rather than Lucifer reporting Eleanor. The resentment and anger is so much cleaner, the saying the unsayable aspect with less glitter.
Hazel is right. Eleanor is mean.
Adding a page appealed for various reasons, but at least part of it was that it's the only in-story chance to see a Lucifer performance. There was an alternate cover in the first arc, but it's not the same – though it's probably the same performance. We've talked about her Brixton performances before, and this is there. This would be a gig that Laura saw, as previously referenced.
The last page (and final panel of page 5) is a take on a scene that's already on canon – specifically, the story as reported in the WicDiv Magazine Special.
The last-minute panic of the issue was Jamie realising we'd forgotten to have Amaterasu’s facepaint on her in the final panel, so that was a quick patch from Tamra. Phew.
The “I'm sorry” panel is A+.
As an example of the Carla Speed McNeil of it all, the last montage of shots is her addition, which brings a visual closure to the sequence.
27-28
Back with Emma Viceli, with a missing scene after issue 8. The actual core details were alluded to in issue 10, but this actually takes us there. If you remember, at this point Inanna and Baal are no longer in any way romantically involved, but fucking the best friend of someone you were with is almost always drama. The purple and red colouring seems to make that be the subtext there.
We checked Laura's age here repeatedly, to ensure she was 18 in these images. It would be actively illegal if we messed up.
Clearly my fave thing is the call back to issue 4's PLAY IT COOL gag.
This issue's structure came after all the art started coming in. It's a mix-tape curation – in terms of what's the best order to take people on a journey. Things like Kris' story being first seemed obvious – his was the alternative cover after all, featuring Inanna and Baal, which makes it a de facto lead story. That this story is furthest along in the timeline made it a suitable end, plus that we open with Inanna/Baal. The real thing is that it's a story which ends with something resembling a concluding beat. “This is going to be complicated” feels like something that ends an issue in the way that many of the stories don't. I suspect the only other credible option was Chynna's story, with Dio/Baph riding off down a motorway. What feels like it could be an ending? What feels like Closure?
IBC
The titles were all added in the last minute, when we realised the best way to actually discern which story was which for the credits was to actually give them a title.
SUMER LOVING was miscorrected to SUMMER LOVING at every stage of production, and had to be changed back every time. There is no love for Sumerian humour in the modern comic market place.
Anyway – off for the season now. The Imperial Phase II trade drops in January, followed by The Wicked + The Divine 1923 special in February and the new arc in March.
Thanks for reading.

2018 Second Round Travel Grant Recipients
Tumblr media
Photo: Andrea Nixon performs in Toronto during Canada Music Week
During the second round of travel funding in 2018, award in July, the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC) approved support for 65 artists and projects travelling to 29 different cities in 10 different countries.
Travel grants have long been an important offering from the Edmonton Arts Council as we encourage collaboration, professional development, and exhibition opportunities that either aren’t available in Edmonton or that provide artists with a larger audience. Similarly, EAC’s Executive Director, Sanjay Shahani, feels strongly about the need for artists to travel for networking and to showcase their work. “It’s important to give artists opportunities to connect with artistic communities, and to support artistic collaborations. Artists need to be at major events, gatherings, and conferences to connect with their peers. If we can provide a small contribution towards helping them go to events—for instance, supporting a band playing at a major festival in front of producers and presenters to potentially get booked—that’s important.”
“It’s important for our artists to collaborate with international artists, so that the work that they’re doing here in Edmonton has staying power, so it’s not just shown and seen in Edmonton, but has the potential for touring, for dissemination, and for distribution.”
Even in the digital age where meetings can happen over Skype and artists can be discovered on YouTube and Instagram, travel is vital to starting and growing careers in the arts. “Travel is just one really important piece of sharing an artist’s work, it allows artists to build relationships which you can’t do any other way,” Shahani says. “Most art forms require collaboration, most art forms require relationships between artists and arts communities.”
If you’ve got a travel opportunity in mind and need support, the deadline for the final round of 2018 travel grants is October 1, 2018. Click here for more information; applications open on September 1, 2018. The EAC grants team is willing and able to provide consultation before an artist chooses to apply; if you’ve never applied to an EAC grant before, are wondering if your project is eligible, or have any other questions about creating a strong grant, email your questions to [email protected] or call 780-424-2787. Artists residing in Edmonton for at least one year can apply for up to $750 to support travel for the purposes of training, development, presentation, touring, networking, and/or marketing.
The current travel grant recipients sought out unique opportunities, or were invited to showcase their work, around the world. Diverse art projects and training opportunities—in visual arts, dance, music, writing, installation, theatre, poetry, and film—were supported from Calgary to Tel Aviv. Get some inspiration for your own projects and opportunities by seeing what our current travel grant recipients are working on—and where they’re going.
