Six of Wands

I made sure to get enough sleep last night and I approach the day with renewed energy! Clearly this paid off because we're back to duel practice and I smash it out of the park, leaving my classmates in awe of my techniques. Whilst I get lots of compliment, there's also a fair few comments about #coffeegate- all said in jest of course, I do rather like my classmates and their playful banter.

Carrying on my theme of taking on more than I can handle, whilst refusing to accept that fact, when we are give 2 tasks in class, I attempt to redeem the previous setbacks by tackling both projects simultaneously.

It's a mixed outcome. One project succeeds, reflecting my resilience and capacity for learning from mistakes. However, the other project suffers, underscoring the inherent challenge of juggling multiple ambitious endeavors. This experience serves as a personal lesson, once again highlighting the need to recognise and manage my limitations, and stressing the importance of strategic decision-making and focused effort for future undertakings. I'm not sure it's a lesson that will stick, but at least I got one task done!

The World

We have a bit of a break after this and I take the opportunity to grab Celestia and go explore. We initially head towards the hidden path, but are distracted by the numerous tapestries hanging up around the court. One in particular catches our eye. There's something a little off with the depicted door. Further investigation leads to a concealed chamber which opens up into a (rather dusty) forgotten library. Ancient tomes and forgotten scrolls line the shelves, that contain spells and knowledge, long overlooked.

Among these ancient texts, we uncover a spell thought to be lost to time—an enchantment that promises to unveil hidden truths within the enchanted walls if we can 'prove ourselves worthy.' Determined to figure out what this means, we set about unravelling the complex magical puzzle. One book leads to another, bringing us closer and closer to figuring out the answer. Though we're not quite there yet and have run out of time for now, I can't describe the sense of accomplishment and level of excitement we both feel. The shared desire to continue our exploration of the hidden facets of the school further deepens the bond we already had. I love this girl

Nine of Swords

We're back to barrier creation. I suppose that we have to learn to defend ourselves before being really effective in a fight. Inspired by Dean Windraven's shield charm (thank goodness he has that activated at all times, I can only imagine the trouble if the coffee had actually gone on him) I decide to work on a passive shield spell, one that wouldn't take concentration away from the dueller, and would allow them to focus on attacking. I need to tweak it because it still requires too much focus, but I'm happy with my progress.

Interaction 23: Undesign the defined

Wednesday, March 1st, was the beginning of the conference proper. I took advantage of the hotel breakfast assuming that there wouldn’t be much provided at the Zürich Convention Center. You see, the conference has been the primary source of income for the organization, and we had two years during which the conference was only online. So, I knew the budget wasn’t going to allow for some of the extravagances of past years. 

Unfortunately, not everyone realized that. Interaction has a reputation for providing an outstanding experience, which is fitting for a User Experience conference. I overheard someone say that they had told a co-worker that the conference always provides a lot of great food, but there was no food to be had. In fact, the coffee service didn’t start until 11:15 am. This immediately generated a bit of a scandal. How could you not provide coffee first thing in the morning? There were many people who arrived only to turn around and head back out into the cold to find a warm beverage and a bite to eat. I’m sure there were good reasons for this decision—likely financial ones. The mistake was not communicating this ahead of time. Even though we hadn’t been in-person for three years, there are expectations. I guess it fit with the day’s theme: Undesign the defined. But enough about Coffeegate. The conference was about to get underway.

Congress Hall was a very nice space. The large windows on the left wall were unexpected. I’m used to dark theaters, but the daylight made the space feel expansive and open. It didn’t seem to negatively impact the visibility of the screen.

Brenda Laurel gave the opening keynote: Designing Interactions with the Earth. This was one of those talks that just introduced a whole bunch of stuff that I wasn’t previously knowledgeable about. From Miyawaki Forests and 3-D bio printing to vertical farming and cultured meats, Brenda guided us through all of the innovative approaches companies are taking to reduce our impact on the planet. I was especially impressed with the solar canals in India that not only generate electricity but save more than 250 million liters of water annually lost to evaporation.

After Brenda’s talk, it was A.I. all the way down. Andreas Markdalen, Global Chief Creative Officer at Frog, outlined the current state of design claiming that design has lost its meaning. Then he gave an overview of all the new paradigms introduced through artificial intelligence and wrapped up with three potential narratives for the future of design. Christopher Noessel, Design Principal for Applied AI at IBM, explained how they’re equipping designers to design for AI. Norbert Krizsán asked if we can build machines that teach us instead of making decisions for us. Nadine Bienefeld talked about machine learning and trust as applied in medical diagnosis. 

Daniel Burka brought the day’s closing keynote: Can designers save lives? Not by themselves. He used his recent work with Simple, free software supporting large-scale hypertension and diabetes management programs, to illustrate how designers participate in projects tackling wicked problems.

After the keynote, they brought all of us Regional Coordinators on stage to recognize our local groups.

The activity of the evening was local agency tours. I had other plans. It was Jason Mesut’s birthday, and I joined his party at The Penthouse, a hip, Japanese, rooftop restaurant, lounge, and nightclub. Good friends, good food, good times.

See, Anons, if I hadn’t been here for over 5 years and seen the same thing play out over and over again, I may have given credence to what you’re trying to sell me. But I HAVE been here over years and KNOW FOR SURE that the ones who get this outraged by Sam’s “behavior” as it relates to women he dates are Extreme Shippers, ex-Extreme Shippers, Regular Shippers, Closet Shippers, and what I call Shipper-Sympathizers. Why do I say this?

Because back in the day, when there was the outrage over Amy Shiels, and then Cody Kennedy, I was still a shipper. And I was one of the ones who treated them horribly and harassed them, and I saw what sides people fell into (I’ve since apologized directly to them for my bad behavior). There was the Shipper side who was PISSED at Sam for not frolicking in pools and on the beach with Cait, and showed public HATE towards the non-Caits. There were the Mean Girls who hung out with us, who weren’t necessarily Shippers, but they were our friends aka Shipper Sympathizers, and they got sick pleasure out of trolling just for the sake of trolling. AND then separately, there were the Super Fans. The ones who had been book fans and then became Outlander TV show fans, and they were appalled at Shipper, Mean Girl, and Shipper Sympathizer behavior. There were also the Regular Fans who may or may not have read the books, but were mostly TV show fans, but were not Shippers. The latter two categories: Super Fans and Regular Fans did not get involved in talking about Sam or Cait’s personal lives and looked down on those who did. 

Those categories have not changed much in 5 years. I can assure you that Super Fans and Regular fans are not spending their time tagging Sam directly to scold him about being in Hawaii. They don’t focus on Sam’s personal life, they’re not invested in it, therefore nothing he does in that regard “disappoints” them. They’re about the books, the show, the charities, and Sam’s other endeavors. As long as Sam fulfills his obligations to those, they don’t care what he’s doing on his off time. Are there Super Fans and Regular Fans who have heard about Sam being in Hawaii with Gia and maybe thought he could have made a different choice? Sure. BUT the difference is they are NOT tagging Sam or Gia complaining to them directly, or whining about it all over social media. And they are certainly NOT creating hate sock troll accounts to hate on Sam and Gia. That category is reserved solely for Extreme Shippers. The ones who PUBLICLY proclaim that their ship is still sailing and Sam and Cait are secretly together are just fronting for their back alley alter egos who reside as hate sock troll accounts on Instagram and Tumblr. Kim the Flutist is a perfect example of this duplicity. On her regular Flutist account, she’s all love and light and support for both Cait and Sam, despite now being blocked by both of them. But in the dirty back alleys of Instagram slums, she herself has admitted, she resides there as Outlanderlover2013, and used to be fameho_ who HATED HEAVILY on Sam’s ex, Mackenzie Mauzy. And it’s pretty clear she’s at least one of the current Gia hate accounts on IG. That’s what’s so sick about ES. They can act all sweet and normal to people’s faces, but their true angry, miserable selves come out via their other social media personas.

So, you can keep coming back sending me these types of Anon Asks trying to convince me that Sam’s “really done it this time” because now it’s not just Extreme Shippers who are angry at Sam, and therefore trying to legitimize the outrage, but I’m not buying the manure you’re selling. Because I know what’s what and who’s who. And the what’s what and who’s who is that ONLY shippers and anyone related to them get this riled up and hateful over how and with whom Sam spends his off time. I looked at the accounts of the people complaining to Sam and there is NOT ONE that is not in some way related with shippers. Not one. 

I would bet good money if it had been Sam and Cait who had holed up together in Hawaii during the quarantine, all these faux outragers would be sending them messages of support “you made the right choice not to take a long flight back to the UK, so wise of youuuuuu.” And shipping them food, embroidered blankets, pillows, homemade masks, etc, etc, etc. That’s all she wrote, folks. TRUTH and FACTS. Simple as that. 

PS. As for Sam, he survived The Barbie Wars, Parisgate, Snorkelgate, Countergate, Kitchengate, Capgate, Fistbumpgate, Handgate, Baseballgamegate,Lemongate, Coffeegate, Tunagate, assorted other Gates I can’t remember... he’ll survive Hawaiigate, and come out even better on the other side. Because the MAJORITY of fans can see that the good outweighs the bad--no one stays mad for long at Samshine. He was born under a special star. And that’s just the way it is. No.Matter.What.The.Haters.Do.
