Thinking about how colds can cause inflammation and congestion that makes a person’s face tender, sore, and so sensitive to touch. Their nose feels so full, but no amount of blowing provides relief. If anything, it exacerbates the inflammation, and even touching their face with something as light and delicate as a tissue becomes too much to bear.

Mucus Buster
Everyone's got lingering congestion this year, so as someone who's no stranger to phlegm, and inherited the folk wisdom of a stage actress (the show must go on!) I share with you my recipe for making things better:
2L water
the juice and rind of one lemon (just dump the juiced rinds in, don't zest them, you maniac)
a small thumb of fresh ginger, sliced in coins
about a dozen cloves, some star anise, peppercorns, and maybe whole cinnamon or allspice or whatever else you like, in a tea ball (except the cinnamon if it doesn't fit, obvs)
good dollop of honey, to taste
Bring the water to a boil then dump in all the stuff. Keep it hot but not boiling – a slow cooker is good for this. Keep this pot on a low heat all day and serve yourself a mug every so often, adding water as necessary. At some point you will need to add a new lemon and some more honey, but the spices can generally carry over two pots if you're drinking it regularly.
The acid helps clear the gunk, ginger is good for the circulation, and clove/aniseed/pepper have some sort of decongestant/soothing properties. Honey is both nice and antiseptic, and apparently is a cough suppressant as well? Anyway, I just got over another run of Covid and this was wasn't 100% effective but it worked better than phenylephrine.

Thought of the day: the heaviness that comes with illness.
When the person is hit full force by their illness in the morning. They can barely open their eyes, alarm clock blearing next to them on the nightstand, but even opening one eye a crack costs so much effort. The lids feel leaden and swollen, and the mere thought of having to lift an arm to silence the alarm is pure agony.
When a person crashes after an entire day of muddling through their work despite coming down with a nasty cold, so as soon as they reach the sanctuary of their home, they collapse under the weight of their illness, barely able to make it to the sofa or the bed. They all but manage to kick off their shoes and jacket before they flop down, pulling a blanket halfway over themselves with heavy arms as they start to shiver from fever, falling asleep with the lights still on a mere minute after they lay down.
When a person has not managed to get up from their sickbed unattended for days. Their bones feel as heavy as stones, each movement costs them so much energy that it leaves them a panting, sweaty mess. Needing their SO/ friend to help them sit up whenever it is time for food or medicine. Having to be guided to the toilet, their SO's / friend's arm tightly wrapped around their waist to support them, while they lean heavily onto them.
Just a poor, sick person suffering under the weight of their illness.

A caretaker that’s extra worried about a sickie who’s not quite better yet. The sickie’s fever’s gone, and they’re not as congested as they were at the height of the illness, but they’re still lightly sniffly and sneezing every so often. The sickie insists they’re ready to venture back out into the world, but the caretaker notices on their trip to get coffee that their shivering sickie is moving sluggishly alongside them. They can hear them breathing extra heavily when they sit down in the car to drive home. It’s not congested breathing so much as it’s weak from days of inactivity. And when they finally get back home, the caretaker watches the sickie like a hawk as they try to do some light catch-up work that they missed over the course of the week. For the rest of the morning, the caretaker is always one step behind the sickie doing housework, playing with the pets, and just enjoying not being so bunged up and miserable anymore, ready for when the sickie eventually crashes.
It isn’t until the sickie lies down on the couch and falls asleep at lunchtime that the caretaker wraps their arms around them and pulls them close to their chest. The sniffly sickie wakes up at their touch and sighs:
“I think I needed another day of rest.”
Cue the caretaker and sickie spending the rest of the day on the couch cuddling under a thick blanket and watching comfort movies. Yes, tomorrow they’d have to go back to work, but today they can just relax.

The Secret to Fighting Colds in College
Always prioritize sleep (even when you aren’t sick)
Sleep boosts your immune system more than emergen-c ever could
The second you start feeling off: guzzle water like there’s no tomorrow
Im serious about this. Your pee should be clear. Keep drinking water.
Have a stock pile of meds to combat cold symptoms. You can’t cure a cold but it’ll make your life easier
I like to have allergy meds, cough meds, and generic stuffy head meds in my apartment at all times
Some meds you can take together BUT ALWAYS READ THE LABELS FIRST. If a drug appears on each label DO NOT take both
Always mark the time you took your meds. 4am you will not be helpful when it comes to avoiding overdoses
When in doubt, don’t take another dosage
Eat actual food. (You should do this anyway but especially when sick). Eat those fruits and veggies
DRINK WATER
E-mail professors ASAP if you think you’ll fall behind on materials and assignments. Most profs will be chill about giving you extensions
SLEEP 8-10 HOURS A DAY MINIMUM
Seriously your body needs sleep when sick
Colds can last anywhere from 3-10 days. Not giving yourself rest will ensure you end up with the 10 day cold
The work you do while sick will not be good so prioritize getting better and then tackle your assignments
Please do not go to class. This is how colds spread through the study body like wildfire. Most schools have better sick policies since Covid so do your classmates a favor and stay home.

When a sick character already knows that their night is going to be terrible, and they dread going to bed.
When they lie down their symptoms just seem to amplify. At night, their stuffy nose becomes a wall of concrete, their fever gets even more uncomfortable, and the annoying tickle in their throat turns into a cough that is impossible to suppress, and leaves them sweaty from the effort.
Bonus points if another character acknowledges their symptoms.
"Good luck trying to sleep with that cough tonight!"

A gets sick very suddenly. B takes over tasks that would usually be left to A.
A sick doctor being looked after by their partner
A sick chef having food made for them for the first time in ages
A sick knight having someone else protect them for once.
A sick singer having their partner hum a gentle tune to them as they fall asleep
A sick florist who needed to deliver an arrangement last minute but can’t, leaving their allergic partner B in charge.
A sick librarian being read to while their head hurts.
Just an unexpected but welcome change of pace.

"how can one human being be this snotty?" someone with a bad cold gets asked. maybe it's in disgust.
however it was said, before they can even think to reply, they have to gasp for air and give their red, streaming nose a fierce yet exhausted blow. the sound is extremely wet. "sbnuuurggg...." they start to answer, but then their gaze goes vacant, and they hitch. "uh... wiiih- wiiih - iiih -" they snap forward in three explosions of snot that they can't cover completely. it flies out through the sides of their tissues or handkerchief. "iihGUSHou! uuhhSHOU! UHSHUU!" after the sneezes comes another noseblow as they try to mop up the excess snot, then a series of thick, wet snorts. "...Sbnnurrrffgl! snrf. snrff. wi - wiiih- wid dif'icu'dy," they manage to get out, finally. they already have to blow their nose again. "sbnuuurrgg." their cold is so terrible. they're a helpless, snotty wreck before it.

When a character has such a sneezy cold that they carry around tissues. Either a neatly pressed handkerchief or the chaotic singular ratty tissue.
On the other hand - a character with a sneezy cold who has nothing but the sleeve of their hoodie…

There's something about nighttime-illness that makes it so, so special to me. The dimmed lights, the rustling of bedsheets when the sick person tosses and turns, or moves closer to their SO, snuggling up against them or curling into their chest for comfort.
The disrupted sleep, disturbed by fits of coughing or fever, depraving the sick person and the SO alike of sleep.
The soft whispers and hums of reassurement, worry, love and care.
Hands groping around in the dark, for a desperately needed tissue or handkerchief that has been lost somewhere between the sheets.
Soothing caresses in the dark, hands finding the blanket to tuck in a shivering sick person, the lamp on the bedside table being switched on and off and on and off again, following the ebb and flow of the sick person's symptoms.
Just a sick person suffering at night and their SO taking care of them 🌙💕

on my mind today:
A person coming home from work, flopping down on the couch next to their partner, sneezing stuffily, and grumbling the phrase:
“I think I caught your cold.”

A has been coughing for days now. The kind of deep, painful cough that makes one almost gag, and makes their abdominal muscles so awfully sore that they end up trying their best not to give in into another coughing fit.
B is sitting on the couch next to A, reading and just having some downtime, as A is lying down with their head on B's lap, trying to rest.
A's breathing is all shades of noisy and messed up. There's a deep, rhythmical wheeze deep in their lungs, and a gurgly, phlegm-filled rattle every time they breathe.
B: "A, love? You should cough. Your chest doesn't sound good at all."
A, whining: "No... abs hurt too much."
B: "I know, dear, but this infection is turning ugly quickly. You need to shake loose this ick in your lungs before it turns into pneumonia. If we're not already there, that's it. Here, let me help. Take a deep breath."
A complies, filling their exhausted lungs with air as much as they can, and B pushes forcefully on their diaphragm, eliciting a semi passive cough from A. They repeat the process a few times, and A manages to clean their chest a tiny bit.
B: "There... better?"
A nods and smiles weakly, finally a little less wheezy.

Introvert who never really got sick in the past due to their anti social tendencies
Enter extrovert, their partner/roommate/best friend who’s always coming home with some kind of cold or infection.
Introvert catches absolutely EVERYTHING off them
