June 6 – It seems that one Mr. Nigel Berbrooke has returned after an extended unexplained absence. He was spotted at the gentleman's club last night, though only for a very short time. This author heard that Mr. Berbrooke was asked to leave only an hour into his appearance due to a particularly aggressive threat he made toward Simon Basset. It’s safe to say that he has been uninvited from the Duke’s ball this evening, and perhaps from the rest of the social season’s events as well, depending on how lenient the Duke and Duchess of Hastings decide to be.
However, information regarding his whereabouts for the past month is scarce, and this author lacks any reputable sources about what the man has been up to while away from London. But rest assured, dear readers, that any information I receive will be relayed through this very column.
Colin looked nervously at his reflection for what seemed like the hundredth time, adjusting his cravat ever so slightly. He sighed in frustration, accepting the fact that his appearance wouldn’t look quite right no matter what he did.
Tonight was Daphne’s ball, and he knew for a fact that you would be in attendance. As much as he was trying to convince himself that this ball was no different, he knew it wasn’t going to be the same. Not after his talk with Anthony. There were some concerningly similar aspects between Kate and Anthony and his friendship– could he even call it a friendship? –with you, and Colin was not too hard-headed to be able to admit that.
But he didn’t want to scare you off. As much as he liked you, he knew you were skittish after everything that happened with Lord Barlow. Besides, Colin didn’t even know if you liked him, too, or if you considered all of this as just an attempt to make you look desirable to other candidates.
Frankly, Colin wasn’t even sure he could convince you to ever marry him. Maybe just being friends, or whatever it was the two of you had now, would suffice. Truthfully, he would take anything.
Tonight, he just wanted a dance. And perhaps a chat, too.
Based on the past few times Colin had spoken with you, he had concluded that you might be his favorite person in the ton to talk to. The mere thought of speaking with you tonight stirred excitement in his stomach. Every time you engaged in conversation, he found himself utterly captivated, forgetting everything else around him. What's more, you seemed genuinely interested in his what he had to say, a rarity among the ton. For the first time, he felt truly understood, and he hoped desperately that you reciprocated his sentiment.
“You look fine,” assured Eloise. “Now can we please go? We’ll never hear the end of it from Daphne if we’re late!”
Colin grumbled in annoyance but begrudgingly made his way to the carriage. In truth, he'd do just about anything to be near you. Even if he didn’t immediately dance with you– knowing full well you would be flocked by hordes of gentlemen wanting your hand in marriage– he still liked to simply… observe you. How your eyes crinkled shut when you laughed, the way you nervously bit your lip when someone you didn’t particularly like asked you to dance, the way you fiddled with your gloves when you were itching to get out of a conversation.
Bloody hell, Colin thought, maybe he did have feelings for you. Well, not love, that would be absurd. But certainly something more than the petty rivalry that had consumed your interactions for weeks on end. It was a sobering realization, especially after relentlessly antagonizing you for the better part of seven weeks.
He was so caught up in his thoughts about you that Colin barely noticed once the carriage had arrived at Daphne and Simon’s residence.
“Colin, darling, is anything the matter?” his mother inquired, tapping him on the arm and gently leading him toward his sister’s home.
“No, no, sorry. Everything’s alright, just got a bit distracted there,” he smiled back.
Christ, he had to get a grip. You’d be put off immediately if you saw how he was acting now. He smoothed his coat down as he entered the ballroom, eyes immediately searching for you in the crowd.
He quickly spotted you speaking to a man he’d never seen before with Isabelle and Carlos by your side. Damn, thought. He’d have to wait to ask you to dance.
But it was no bother. In the meantime, he attended to his duties as the most beloved Bridgerton. He sought out his sister and Simon to thank them for hosting the ball, of course, and danced with Penelope Featherington.
Yet his focus stayed on you. He found himself glancing over to where you were every few minutes, just needing reassurance that you were still there. And also because he quite liked looking at you in general.
Colin shook his head, bringing his attention back to Penelope. He had to remind himself to pull himself together. Even though Colin had spoken to Anthony, you had no reason to believe anything was different between you two. And it wasn’t. Everything was the same. It was only Colin who had changed. Who wanted something different, something more.
“What’s on your mind?” asked Penelope after she noticed Colin’s drifting attention.
“Ah, nothing,” he responded dismissively. “Does Lady Montclair look particularly… subdued tonight, do you think?”
“Y/N?” Penelope clarified, looking over at where you were standing next to Louis.
“Oh heavens, don’t look now!” Colin whispered, panicked. “She’ll see us both looking and know we were talking about her.”
Penelope laughed in disbelief. “Could it be? That my dear friend Colin Bridgerton is finally falling for someone? Have you truly found roots in England? Is that why you’ve stayed for so long this season?”
Colin could only smile bashfully. She had never seen him quite like this. And though it was unusual, it was fairly endearing to see him so flustered over a girl.
“Well, go talk to her, then. What are you doing dancing with me?”
“Penelope, I dance with you at every ball. I can go speak with her after. And don’t tell anyone! I’m not even sure if she likes me.”
“Very well then,” relented Penelope, but Colin did not miss the knowing smile she sent him.
After the dance concluded, Colin chatted with his brothers for a few minutes before making his way over to you and Louis, wanting to avoid seeming overly eager. But once he started walking toward you, your head shot up, as if you could tell that he was getting nearer.
Your eyes met for a split second, but you immediately turned your head away, choosing instead to look at your gloved hands, which were fidgeting nervously. Colin frowned in confusion at your reaction, but continued walking, thinking that perhaps you had seen someone else behind him.
As he reached your side, he saw you chewing anxiously on your lip and his frown deepened. But he pushed through. This was what he wanted, after all. You were what he wanted.
“Lady Montclair,” he bowed. “Would you care for a dance tonight?” he asked, a hopeful smile on his lips as he reached for the dance card on your wrist.
But you pulled your hand away abruptly, refusing to meet his eyes. “No, thank you, Mr. Bridgerton,” was your curt response.
Colin’s confusion morphed into frustration. What was the matter with you?
“That’s alright, I understand if you want to save space on your dance card for more…serious suitors,” he cringed as he heard himself speak. But at the end of the day, he was well aware that you were looking for a titled gentleman to be your husband. “We could take a turn about the ballroom and chat for a bit,” he offered, looking at you hopefully once again.
You finally met his eyes, and he could tell you were searching for something as you looked at him, a pained look on your face.
“No, thank you,” you repeated firmly, an edge to your voice.
Colin rolled his eyes. This was so typical of you. You let him in for about three seconds and then went back to keeping him at arm’s length for whatever unknown reason.
“Are we really back to doing this?” asked Colin, exasperated. “I thought we were friends, at the very least.”
Your spine was suddenly rigid, and a fury ignited in your eyes. “We were never friends, Mr. Bridgerton,” you ground out. “You were simply doing Eloise a favor. Now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s someone else I must dance with.”
Your voice was cold and uncaring, and Colin was slapped with a reminder of how things used to be as you sidestepped him to go toward the other side of the ballroom.
Three steps into your journey, it was clear that there wasn’t actually anyone waiting to dance with you, but he couldn’t for the life of him figure out why you were so desperate to get away. Even at the peak of your hatred toward him, you were always open to verbally sparring.
Colin turned around to Louis, shooting him a questioning look. But your brother could only shrug. Who knew what went on in the depths of your brain? Louis had noticed you had been slightly on edge ever since you returned from Hyde Park with your sisters yesterday afternoon, but he wasn’t expecting you to be this hostile, especially after getting along so well with Colin.
Feeling his desire to speak with you outweigh his pride, Colin turned back and grabbed your hand, turning you to face him. “If what you want is to go back to arguing, I’m happy to do that,” he said, heart sinking to his stomach at the thought of going back to how things were.
He sounded positively pathetic. But he didn’t care. All he cared about was keeping this fragile dynamic alive, keeping you near him. If Anthony and Kate could do it, couldn’t the two of you?
You seemed on the brink of tears, but your voice held an unspeakable fury. “What I want is for you to leave. Me. Alone,” you emphasized each word with a pointed jab at his chest. “Please,” you whispered, your voice faltering. “I do not wish to dance with you, or to chat with you, or even to be near you at all. Good night.”
With that, you pivoted away, heading towards the refreshment table, tears welling in your eyes. And Colin was left standing there, hand lingering over the spot on his chest you had prodded.
He felt a familiar anger rising through him. It didn’t matter that you were the only person in the world who understood him. It didn’t matter that you were completely beautiful and incredibly smart, either. And it certainly didn’t matter that he’d fallen for you. Because you still hated him. And he was a fool to ever think things could be different.
Colin was rooted to the spot, unable to move as he watched you smile and greet some gentleman or other. He flinched as he saw the man kiss the back of your hand, and watched, seething, as he led you to the dance floor.
Deciding he needed something stronger than lemonade, Colin turned around and grabbed a glass of champagne, downing it in one go. He couldn’t believe you didn’t think he was your friend. What the hell else could you call it?
He spotted Eloise and Penelope chatting close by and stomped over to them. He was sure he looked like Gregory after a fight with Hyacinth, pouting with his arms crossed, but he couldn’t find it in himself to care.
“I thought you were going to talk to Y/N,” said Penelope, confused to see him back so soon.
Colin shot her a murderous look. “She wants nothing to do with me, apparently. She said the only reason I talked to her was out of a favor to Eloise.”
Eloise coughed awkwardly. “Well, didn’t you?”
“No!” shot back Colin defensively. “Not entirely, at least. I don’t know. I need to leave.”
You were still dancing with the unnamed man, and Colin was very much still seething as he watched the pair of you twirl around and smile at one another.
Usually, it was frustrating to watch you dance with other people because you were never like that with him. But this well and truly hurt. It hurt to see you like this when he knew, now for a fact, that he could never have that with you again.
“I need to leave,” he repeated. He couldn’t bear to watch you do this all night.
Snatching another glass of champagne and downing that one, too, he bid his goodbyes to Penelope and Eloise and made his way across the ballroom to the exit.
“Are you leaving already, darling? You’ve barely been here an hour,” Colin heard next to him as a hand reached out for his elbow.
Turning around, he faced his mother, who looked like she was in the middle of a conversation with Anthony and Benedict.
Colin nodded. “I’m sorry, mother. I just can’t. I can’t stay,” he responded, voice breaking as he glanced back toward you again.
Seeing you lean to whisper something in your suitor’s ear, he slumped forward, practically feeling physical pain at the sight.
“I must go,” Colin said firmly, giving his mother a quick squeeze and rushing to the door.
Violet nodded, bewildered, and followed where Colin’s gaze had been. Finding you dancing with Lord Norcliffe, Violet sent a knowing look to Benedict and Anthony.
“I suppose Hyacinth was right,” she said sympathetically.
“And don’t you dare tell her! It’ll get to her head,” responded Benedict.
---
“The Bridgertons will be in attendance tonight,” your mother informed you carefully as you sat in the carriage on the way to yet another ball.
“And by the Bridgertons you mean…”
“She means Colin, yes,” answered Jacques, earning a stifled laugh from his wife, Chiara.
Ever since they’d been back and learned of your intense hatred for Colin, Jacques had not been able to stop making a mockery of it. Usually, you were quite agreeable, and it was rare that you found yourself at odds with someone who wasn’t your sibling, so this seemingly unprompted hatred was quite amusing to your brother.
You groaned and glared at him. “No one asked you to come tonight, you know. In fact, no one asked you to come to England at all! You could have stayed in Tuscany, and I would have been much happier.”
“Ah, but then I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to tease you about this,” answered Jacques, completely unbothered by your biting tone.
“Whatever,” you grumbled in response, only slightly comforted by Chiara’s apologetic smile as she softly scolded her husband.
It had been four days since your run-in with Nigel, and three since you saw Colin at Daphne’s ball, and the thought of seeing him again made you feel sick. It was already bad enough that he was disgusting and had no respect for you, but it was made infinitely worse by the fact that you had let yourself grow to care for him. In a friendly way, of course. You could never have married him, anyway. But it was still embarrassing that you fell into his charming trap and thought that you could become something more than a conquest for him.
“Be nice,” your mother whispered in warning as you approached the Bridgertons.
You shrugged her off, not needing a reminder. You had been brought up to be the perfect lady. You weren’t about to forget yourself now. You refused to give Colin that power.
You greeted the family warmly until you got to Colin. “Mr. Bridgerton,” you said, giving him a curt nod.
Not waiting for a response, you moved to stand away from him as you looked out at the crowd. Perhaps you would find a gentleman who was actually enjoyable to talk to, though your chances seemed slim.
Colin shifted uncomfortably on his feet, watching you intently. It seemed that your behavior at Daphne’s ball hadn’t been a fluke, after all. He ground his teeth in annoyance, growing increasingly irritated by the fact that you were just standing there.
Why weren’t you doing anything? It was infuriating. Perhaps it would have been less infuriating if it were anyone else, but it seemed like anything you did was particularly vexing to him.
Making his way over to you, he stopped beside you. Wanting to slip back into the comfort of your tumultuous dynamic, Colin took a shot at your attire. “I see the modiste-”
“Don’t,” you interrupted, your voice shaking, barely above a whisper, and your gaze locked ahead of you.
Colin was taken aback. You had never, in all the time that he had known you, backed down from an argument. It seemed that you just… didn’t want him around at all. You hated him enough that you didn’t want to be near him. And in any way that mattered, it was worse than when you were antagonizing him.
“I’m sorry,” Colin said desperately. “I didn’t mean- Look, can we please talk? Just quickly, I just want-”
But you didn’t even let him finish. “There’s nothing to say.”
Colin scoffed, a futile attempt to hide how hurt he was really feeling. “What do you mean there isn’t anything to say? I have things to say, at least. Just talk to me.”
You finally turned to face him, feeling your stomach drop as you looked at his desperate eyes searching yours for an answer.
“Let me rephrase. I do not wish to speak with you, in any capacity, now or any time in the future. I do not care to hear what you have to say, Mr. Bridgerton, and I would appreciate it if you could respect that, though I know that’s not usually in your nature.”
Colin could only sputter, staring at you in disbelief as you walked away. He felt his stomach turn uncomfortably as you reached a man he didn’t know, but whom you’d danced with at Daphne’s Ball.
He had to have done something wrong. Colin hadn’t the slightest clue what, but you obviously had something against him, and it clearly wasn’t just you being silly.
He swore under his breath. You were impossible. Not even Eloise knew why you hated him! How on earth was he supposed to know how to fix this when you refused to speak with him? It was almost easier when all you did was hurl insults at him and step on his feet as he poured lemonade down your dress.
Over on the dance floor, you couldn’t help but steal glances at Colin, mentally scolding yourself every time you did. This was not how you were supposed to be acting toward the man who had jumped at the first opportunity to compromise you.
The only reason you were dancing with Lord Norcliffe now was because he had not arrived in London until after your whole debacle with Lord Barlow. You supposed he could have heard what happened from someone else, but he was safer than the rest of the men of the ton, you thought grimly. It would’ve helped if he was interesting to talk to, or even nice to look at, but you supposed you couldn’t be very selective.
Curtsying and thanking Lord Norcliffe for the dance, you made a beeline toward Carlos and Philippe across the room.
“You look like you don’t want to be here,” commented your brother, amused.
You rolled your eyes at him. “Astute observation, Philippe.”
Carlos laughed and gave you a comforting pat on the head. “But what happened to your season in England? I thought you were excited to be here?”
“My mother and father were certainly excited,” you mused, taking Philippe’s lemonade and drinking from it.
Seeing their confused looks, you briefly explained your encounter with Nigel Berbrooke, and they suddenly became very concerned.
“Ce connard! Il est où? Je vai le tuer,” growled Philippe under his breath, not wanting the rest of the ton to hear his threat (That asshole! Where is he? I’m going to kill him).
“Philippe, it’s alright,” you assured him, glancing over at Carlos and seeing that he, too, had understood your brother’s words despite not speaking French. “I believe Simon Basset took care of him at White’s a few days ago.”
“That’s just as well, or I’d have done it myself,” he grumbled, crossing his arms over his chest.
“You can just come to Spain next year, cariño,” Carlos said warmly.
You smiled up at your brother-in-law, silently thanking him for the offer even though you knew your parents would never allow it.
Colin watched enviously as you had a conversation with your older brother and your older sister’s husband. He wished he could talk to you again. Even if nothing got resolved between you, he liked to hear your voice. He loved how stubborn you were and how frustrated you got when you forgot the English word for something. He just missed you, he supposed.
Which is why, as Colin watched yet another man approach you and write their name on your dance card, he decided he couldn’t do this anymore. The watching, the waiting, the wanting. He couldn’t do any of it anymore.
“I need to leave,” he said firmly.
Daphne, who had been standing beside him, turned to face him, startled. “Leave where?”
“India, Egypt, Morocco, back to Greece. I don’t care. I just need to get out of here.”
“What? Why?” asked Daphne, still confused.
“You know why,” Colin responded flatly, giving her an unimpressed look.
Daphne instinctively turned to look at you, laughing as the man you were dancing with whispered something to you. She turned to look back at her brother with a disappointed look.
“I can’t imagine leaving would be the best option.”
“Why not?” Colin shot back. “What good can my presence possibly do?”
Daphne put a hand on her brother’s elbow, giving him a sympathetic look. However, her voice was firm. “You always leave when it gets hard, you know? You’re always the first out the door and onto a different continent. Why are you so scared of staying?”
Colin was stunned. He didn’t know his motives were that obvious. But he supposed it made sense for Daphne to know since she knew him better than most people.
“I’m not scared of staying,” Colin insisted defensively. “I just think it’ll be better for everyone if I go.”
Daphne furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head. “And do what? What could you possibly be doing that is so important that you would abandon the woman you love?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Colin argued, his voice growing strained as he felt his chest getting tighter. “None of it matters. She doesn’t love me back. I could be down the street or in Brazil and she wouldn’t even notice. She clearly hates me and wants nothing to do with me, so why should I stay?”
Daphne crossed her arms, looking more than a little disappointed. “Well, I won’t be the one to stop you if you decide to go. But really think about whether you want to be the person who leaves time and again. Things could change. It's only been a few days since she's been like this.”
She had a point, but Colin was too upset to admit it. Daphne was right. He couldn’t just leave now. If anything, it would hurt him more than being near you with you not speaking to him. It was the strangest feeling, knowing you loved someone but feeling powerless to do anything about it.
Colin knew he couldn’t continue like this. Perhaps he couldn’t leave, but he could certainly stay as far away as possible.

The night was out. Chilled but rather comforting on the skin. You were outside, waiting as your sister had already taken the carriage in a haste. Not a few moments ago she had a little encounter with Colin Bridgerton. One that you witnessed from afar. You could tell by your sister’s expression that she was displeased. Distressed to say the least. Once again had Colin Bridgerton said something to upset your sister. It was getting out of hand and you hated him for it. Hating how he toggled with your sister’s feelings.
They had been friends for a while now, but your sister desired more. He was the only good gentleman that gave her attention during the balls. Even if it was just a little. It wasn’t his first slip, but this time you clearly had enough of him. Now that your sister had run off with the carriage, you were left to return home on your own. Waiting for the carriage to return to the estate of this night’s ball would take awfully long.
Rubbing your arms gently, you hesitantly decided what to do. Go or stay? Slightly turning your head you noticed in the corner of your eye a figure approach. Once you fully got a glimpse of him, you rolled your eyes with annoyance. – “Y/n.” – Colin said approaching you. – “Good night Mr. Bridgerton.” – you answered coldly turning your posture away from him. – “Do you not need a chaperone?” – he asked making you stop in your way. With a deep sigh, trying to temper your annoyance down, you turned back to him.
“Certainly not from you.” – you answered with a forced smile. He stared confused at you. Trying to process the meaning of your words. He slightly came closer to you. – “Did…did I say something to offend you?” – he questioned. You scoffed making him furrow his brows dumbfound. Colin and you hadn’t been the closest, yet he considered himself acquainted with you through your sister. – “To my sister you did!” – you bit back finding his act of stupidity tiring.
“Pen?” – Colin. – “I…I don’t understand.” – he answered. – “Why do you minimize my sister?” – you asked him boldly. Colin was taken back by your reply, looking surprised at you. – “Minimize… no, Y/n… I…I wrote to your sister everyday this summer with little reply.” – he said with a charming smile. You smiled in return as Colin flourished from seeing you smile. Yet your smile had other intensions. – “Oh, yes I know all about the letters you wrote her. Letting her know about all your adventures. I am well aware of that Colin!” – you pressured on.
Colin chuckled nervously. – “Are… are you going to make me say it out loud?” – he responded feeling a bit foolish. You quirked your eyebrow up unintrigued.  – “I missed her.” – he told you. You busted out in a laugh. – “You miss her?” – you positioned yourself stronger, fiercer to go up against your sister’s good friend. – “You miss her, but you would never court her is that correct?”
“Y/n I…” – Colin started finally losing a bit of his  boyish foolishness towards you. – “I overheard you!” – you called out. – “At my mama’s ball last season… telling everyone you would never ever court Penelope Featherington.” – You felt yourself get a bit emotional, defending your sister against her best friend. Against the one she loved. Some voices approached as it drew Colin’s attention briefly away from you. – “Bridgerton.” – one of them greeted as they passed. Colin bowed his head to them before leaning a bit closer to you. Lowering his voice he spoke – “Perhaps we should go where there’s somewhere private?” – he suggested.
“Because I embarrass you?” – you said loud enough for anyone walking around to hear. – “My sister can change her entire wardrobe and gain confidence but that would never take away that she is the laughingstock of the ton.” – you outed in anger. – “My sister doesn’t deserve a cruel man like yourself in her life.” – you picked up the hem of your dress. – “Good night Sir!” -  you saluted coldly at him before taking off in the night. Colin watched you leave with a certain guilt eating at him.
Two days later you were with your sisters and mama at a garden event. Your sisters sitting down in a chair underneath a tent, waving themselves some cool. Your mother was chatting with some of the other mother’s. You had no idea where Penelope was. You on the other hand were playing battledores and shuttlecock’s with some of the other season’s participants.
You stood on one side with a girl you were quite familiar with. On the other side were two gentleman. The shuttlecock went high up in the air as the boys knocked it to each other. You were waiting for the shuttlecock to come your way to hit it to her and then back to the boys without it touching the ground.
Somehow your attention got drawn away from the heavens. Seeing Colin Bridgerton clearly look for someone not far from you. – “Miss Y/n!” – one of the men called out as the shuttlecock went your way. Your attention was back as you calculated the moment your battledore hit the shuttlecock. The shuttlecock went up in the air as you thought back of annoying Colin.
The shuttlecock came down once more as you needed to pass it to your companion. Yet you let the shuttlecock come lower, batting it away with your battledore towards Colin. You watched as it hit him in the head. The shuttlecock fell in his hand as he looked down at it confusingly. Rubbing his sore head with the other one. The girl at your side pointed firmly at Colin to go and fetch it. You sighed loud going over to him. The moment Colin noticed you approach, he dropped to a bow. – “My shuttlecock.” – you said offering your hand for him to lay it in.
“You hit me.” – Colin responded. – “Must have slipped.” – you responded sarcastic. Colin was all but amused. – “Now my shuttlecock.” – you insisted upon. Colin was about to give it to you till he changed his mind last moment. He had taken a deep breath, moving the shuttlecock behind his back. – “I’ll give it back if you allow me to apologise first.” – he started throwing a charming smile at you. – “You should apologise to my sister.” – you made clear not wanting an apology from him.
Colin tensed his jaw, as he had hoped for another outcome. – “I…Y/n.” – he sighed out. – “I don’t require your useless apology. My sister needs to be apologized to.” – you told him clearly. Colin sighed loud getting worked up by your attitude towards him. – “Fine! If you don’t accept my apology, you might not even deserve it.” – he snapped back. – “I don’t even want it!” – you fired back. – “Fine!” – he finished. – “Fine!” – you repeated loud.
“Good luck getting this back than!” – he showed you the shuttlecock again. You slapped your hand at it as Colin had pulled it away in time. – “Give it back!” – you called out to him, getting some attention from bystanders. – “You don’t deserve this.” – he mocked, taunting you by showing you the shuttlecock just out of reach. You groaned annoyed as he moved it behind his back. You knocked into him full force to reach for it behind his back. A bit too forceful perhaps?
Colin stumbled backwards as you fell with him. With a loud oof fell you on him. Now having the full attention of those around you. You were very much aware of the staring eyes. You pushed yourself hard off him. He felt the air get sucked out of his lungs. – “Eat it!” – you cursed at him storming off. Colin sat up, swallowing nervously at the sudden attention. Getting up, he saw Penelope look his way. He shamefully turned his head away, getting up and taking his leave.
**
Lights were flickering in the warmth of the room. Music filled the room. Dancers were taking in the centre of the room. You stood by the side with your two other sisters and mama. Your gaze went across the room. When your eyes fell upon Colin, you glared at him. He glared back at you, turning his head proudly away. You stubbornly looked away as well. Looking down, you fidgeted on your dress. Somehow it pained you to see him act so coldly towards you.
You didn’t intend on doing so but the more time you spend with Colin, arguing and bickering, the more you felt drawn to him. You shouldn’t be falling for him, but yet you were. Some novels say that you grow more attracted to those things you hate the most with frequency. This might be the case for Mr. Bridgerton and you. Mama nudged you hard making you lift your chin back up. She gestured to you, to smile so you could attract more eligible men.
Not being in the mood for her interfering, you took off. Blending through the crowd to escape her. Pushing yourself through the crowd. Coming to a brief stop, you came face to face with your sister Penelope. Your eyes widened briefly before you rushed off to the hallway to avoid her. Penelope blended with the crowd, lowering her head when she saw Colin near. He was clearly in pursuit of someone.
Almost panting he disappeared through the same door you had left moments ago. It made Penelope think doubtfully. You exhaled loud setting your hands on the desk from the room you had run off to. Clutching your heart, you felt it beat faster. Faster then it normally did. Was this Colin’s doing? Shaking your head you didn’t want to think about him. It was wrong to think of his that way. Your sister was madly in love with him. You couldn’t… not for the sake of her. – “Y/n.” – you jumped back startled at the hearing of your voice.
Colin had entered the room, shutting the door quietly behind him. You rounded the desk, creating more distance between you and him. – “Shouldn’t you dance with my sister.” – you sarcastically suggested to him. He exhaled soft, practically done with your flight modus. Done with how you kept pushing yourself away and shoving your sister to the front. – “Y/n.” – Colin started as you didn’t want to hear it. – “You keep doing it Colin. You keep minimizing my sister.” – you told him.
“Ignoring every hint she throws at you, and you too blind to see it. I hate how you ridicule my sister’s feelings towards you. She is not some object.” – you ranted out as Colin came nearer, going round the desk to reach you. – “You tell her you miss her, but you won’t court her. Why?” – you asked desperate. – “I can’t court her.” – he answered standing face to face with you.
“Why?” – you repeated wanting to have a clear answer. Colin felt himself be swept up by the heated moment. – “I just can’t.” – he responded loudly feeling his hands tremble to get a hold on you. – “Answer me. Clearly!” – you called out getting up in his face. – “Because I want you!” – Colin shouted back, practically panting from the tension released inside of him. Your eyes widened.
Colin grabbed for your face. The hell with being a gentleman. The hell with your reputation and his. In this moment he just wanted you. He forced himself forwards, pressing his lips on yours. Your gaze widened more at his touch. His lips gently brushing against yours as you fell under his spell. Giving in to the sensation as it was beyond this world.
Butterflies flattering around inside till they suddenly dropped with realisation. Guilt. You pushed Colin off, breaking off the kiss. Colin blinked confused at you breaking it off. Stunned you held your hand before your mouth. As if something was stolen from your lips. A kiss perhaps? – “My sister…” – you whispered out knowing just how much she loved him. – “Y/n…” – Colin said wanting to approach you.
“No!” – you called out clear, taking a step back. – “I…I can’t do this…” – you told him running around the desk. Throwing the door open and taking your leave. Colin went around the desk as well, standing in the door opening. One last attempt to call out to you, but you were out of reach.
Exhaling deep, he lowered his head, heart broken at the loss of touch. He never courted Penelope but he found himself falling for you. Her sister. The sister that yelled at him. That wasn’t afraid to speak back even when some might find it out of turn. He liked how sincere you were, but also caring and free. A bright personality when one got to know you, truly know you.
Penelope bit the sour apple down. A single tear fell down her cheek, yet her face stood bitter. Bitter with hatred for what she had just seen. Her own sister fleeing a room with Colin Bridgerton showing himself in the door opening. It was clear to anyone that you had been in there privately with him.
Penelope made her way to the carriage. Rushing to get home. In the carriage she pulled out a piece of parchment from her reticule. The carriage hobbled yet she maintained balance. Taking out a pencil, she set it down on the parchment.
Dearest gentile reader…

hope for the future
Tumblr media
colin bridgerton x grumpy, wife, fem!reader
summary: you share your fears about not being able to conceive with your husband, colin
warnings: infertility, mentions of pregnancy
-
You were stood in the corner of a ball, hoping to avoid everyone’s eye contact as you didn’t want to talk to anyone. You weren’t usually talkative anyway but today you were having an especially awful day. You sighed to yourself as you quietly sipped on your champagne.
You and your husband’s dream was to have multiple children yet after a year and a half, you were still yet to conceive. Recently you had felt more timid than usual, your inability to get pregnant taking a toll on you. Almost like you had jinxed it, Colin came walking over cheerfully. “How are you, dear?”, he questioned gently. “Fine.”, you said whilst shrugging your shoulders nonchalantly. He looked at you with concern written over his soft features. “Are you sure?”, he asked. “I’m sure.”, you answered as tears welled up in your eyes. You could never hold yourself together for long.
He carefully took your hand and lead you outside away from any prying eyes. “What’s wrong, my dear?”, he whispered in a cautious tone. You rolled your eyes at your incapability of keeping yourself together as tears cascaded down your face. He looked deeply into your eyes as he used his thumb to wipe away your tears as you sniffled.
“My dream is to have children… and so is yours!”, you hastily added, shaking your head. “We have been married for one year and six months and I am still yet to conceive a child, Colin. What are we doing wrong?”, you huffed frustratedly as you rubbed your eyes once Colin had removed his thumbs from your cheeks. “My dear, my main priority is you. As long as I have you I will be happy.”, he said with certainty. You gazed at his pristine blue eyes, seeing the genuine look they held.
“Yes, I will be happy with you Colin but there are some days when my life does feel a tad bit incomplete.”
“Especially when it seems that everyone around us are having children, like Daphne and many others.”, you stated. You could never express your emotions well and this was hard for you. More water slid down your flushed cheeks. You always regretted crying in front of people but you could not control it, once the tears had appeared there was no way to stop them.
“Darling, why didn’t you just tell me that you were feeling as such?”, he questioned. “Colin, you know how I am in these situations.”
“You do realise that it could be my fault and not yours, right?”, Colin whispered.
He cleared his throat before offering you his arm: “Shall we head off then?”, he looked down at you. “Yes, of course, my dear.”, you replied.
When you entered the carriage after Colin graciously guiding you up the steps, you turned your head to look at Colin as you noticed him staring. “What are you looking at?”, you asked teasingly. Colin snapped back to reality. He mumbled under his breath. After seconds, Colin tackled you and kissed you passionately. Roughly nine months later and you had the first of your many children.

Enchanted to Meet You - Colin Bridgerton
Tumblr media
A/N: I am so hype for the new season, and Colin isn't even my favorite Bridgerton sibling. When I was thinking of who should get Enchanted, I knew the story had to happen at a beautiful ball, so really this was one of the only choices. (There may be more Enchanted inspired fics, who's to say!) Hope you enjoy!
TS Prompt #6: Enchanted
Pairing: Colin Bridgerton x Reader Word Count: 3.0k Synopsis: After years of knowing, and not liking each other, Colin and the reader meet again at a ball, and share a magical evening together.
"Isn't that your second glass?" Eloise asks, a glass of champagne in her own gloved hand.
"No. It's my third," you say. She doesn't even try to hide the un-ladylike snort she lets out.
"I thought your mother said one."
"She did," you say, peering about the crowded ballroom for her deep red dress. "But, as this is my third ball of the season, I thought it only fitting."
"I'm sure she'll see it that way, too," Eloise says sarcastically.
It was true, this was your third ball, but the three glasses of champagne didn't really have anything to do with that. The matching numbers did add some kind of magic to the night, but truly, you just needed them to get through the evening.
It was your first year out, and after three balls, you weren't sure you would ever find someone to marry. It wasn't like you hadn't had callers. You had blossomed in the last year. So much so, that people often did a double take when they looked upon you. It wasn't so much that they weren't interested in you, but that you weren't in them.
This evening was looking to be another night of forcing laughter and faking smiles with men you had no interest in. The thought of another glass of champagne was too enthralling.
"I don't believe it," Eloise says, leaving your side. You watch her nearly run across the ballroom, and run into the arms of a man. When they break away, you see it is Colin, returned from his travels around the world.
It is hard to believe, but he has become more handsome, in his travels. You spent years and years at the Bridgerton household, and never found Colin anything other than annoying. He was the brother closest in age to Eloise, and he spent most of his time picking on the two of you.
But walking towards you now is a man. A very handsome man, whose smile seems to make your insides melt. You think you might melt, too, as he walks up to you.
"Have we met?" he says, taking your hand in his.
"Are you joking?" you ask, watching as he places a soft kiss to your gloved hand. "Colin, it's me."
"Y/N?" he asks quietly, his brow furrowed as he studies your face.
"Of course it's Y/N, you idiot," Eloise says, slapping his arm.
"You . . . you look completely different," he says.
"Bad different?"
"No, no, not bad at all," he says. He stares at you for a moment longer, seemingly speechless.
"Oh cut it out, will you?" Eloise says, "Both of you are staring like you've never seen the other before."
"Well, he looks different, too," you say, "A good different," you add, looking to him. He smiles, his mouth turned up to one end in playful amusement.
"Eloise, I hope you do not mind if I ask Miss Y/L/N to dance," he says. Eloise begins to say she does mind, but your mind is only on Colin as you drop your hand into his.
You are trembling as he leads you out onto the dancefloor. You have danced this dance hundreds of times before, and have done so to this exact song at the previous two balls. But now, the man in front of you is Colin, and that makes it completely new.
When he pulls you into his arms, your chests a touch closer than societally acceptable, you aren't breathing.
"Hello," he says softly.
"Hello," you say, as the music begins around you. Your moves are instinctual, as you let him lead you into the dance. He is still studying you, his eyes on every angle of your face. You laugh at his ministrations.
"What?" he asks.
"You act as if you don't know me."
"Well, I don't."
"I've spent nearly every summer at the Bridgerton household."
"No, that was Eloise's annoying childhood friend, that wasn't you," he says, his eyes locking on yours.
"Well, it has been a while since we've seen each other. And I have changed."
"I can tell," he says deeply. Goosebumps appear along your neck, and you watch his eyes track them.
"You've changed, too," you say, "Traveling agrees with you."
"Thank you," he says. He spins you out of his arms and back in. "How are you enjoying your first season?"
"Truthfully, it has been pretty boring so far."
"Boring?" he asks in surprise. "Don't tell me you've been a wallflower."
"Oh, on the contrary, everyone seems to notice how much I've changed," you say with a grin, making him laugh, "It's just, I haven't found their company as agreeable."
"And how about my company?" he asks, his voice quiet again.
"I'm not sure yet," you say thoughtfully, studying his face. "But so far, you are certainly a far better dancer than any of the other men I've danced with."
"Really? I'm honored."
The music comes to an end, and both of your hands linger for a moment longer on the other. The dancefloor starts to shift as couples enter and leave. You are supposed to be dancing with Lord Charmbord for the polka.
"Care to have some more fun?" Colin asks.
"What?"
"If you don't mind leaving Lord . . ." he trails off as he touches your wrist again, glancing at your dance card. "Lord Charmbord in the lurch, I'd be happy to prove that my company is much more enjoyable," he says. There is mischief in his eyes, and you know you will go wherever he wants you to.
"Where to?" you ask.
"Meet me at the fork in the gardens," he whispers in your ear, as he walks past you casually. Again, the goosebumps appear.
You walk off the dancefloor, keeping your head down so that no one, especially Lord Charmbord or your mother, see you slip out onto the terrace.
There are a few couples lingering out on the balcony, but they are too involved in their conversations to notice you move down the steps to the garden. You move silently as you look around for Colin, or anyone else.
Scandal would be sure to follow you if anyone were to catch you out here, but you can't bring yourself to care right now. This is the first time all season that you have felt anything, and you aren't going to let it go.
As you round a bend in the gardens, hands grab your waist and you nearly scream out. Quickly, though, Colin turns you around and reveals himself. You clutch a hand to your pounding heart.
"You frightened me," you say.
"I'm sorry," he says, laughter still in his eyes.
"No, you aren't," you say with a laugh.
"No, I'm not. But I am glad you met me here."
"Well, I was promised good company,” you say. Colin straightens, a smirk on his face, as he extends his arm to you.
“A promise I intend to make good on.” He leads you deeper into the maze like garden, as if he has explored it before. Before you can ask, he says, "You know, I used to play with the lord's son when we were kids. He knew where all of the hiding spots were in here, and challenged me to hunt him down. It took a few years, but I was eventually able to find all of his spots, and a few of my own."
"So if I asked you to hide right now . . ."
"You would not find me."
"You assume so little about my seeking skills?" you joke.
"No, just that my hiding ones are much more polished."
"Ah. Well, I should hate for us to have to split up, anyhow."
"As would I. You know, I still can't truly believe that you're you."
"I really haven't change, Mr. Bridgerton," you say.
"No?" he asks, looking you over thoughtfully. "Well, perhaps I have."
"You have."
"How so?" he asks, a small smile on his face. You look him over for a long moment before smiling back.
"You've gotten taller," you say. Colin lets out a tut of laughter.
"Indeed."
"But, I'm sure it's also your travels that are to blame for the man I met tonight."
"I would agree with that estimate," he says, "I learned a lot during my journeys that I am not sure I would have ever discovered at home."
"I can't help but feel envious," you say, "I've always wanted to travel, too."
"Really? Where to?" he asks.
"Anywhere, truthfully. But I've always been fascinated by Florence."
"It is truly gorgeous," he says with a nod.
"You've been?"
"I have. They have absolutely the best food of any of the places I've been. But what's more is they even have the best dances."
"The best dances?"
"Yes, they've taken our plain old quadrille and changed it into something magical," he says. He seems to notice the excitement in your eyes, because his smile only grows. "I couldn't help but notice that you're an accomplished dancer."
"Oh, please," you say, self-depreciatingly, "I'm passable, but certainly wouldn't call myself accomplished."
"I had no complaints," he says softly. He waits for you to give him a smile before continuing. "And if you spent one day in Florence, I know you would out dance every woman in there."
"They are truly that good?" you ask.
"Would you like me to show you?" he asks. He has come to a stop in the center of the gardens. A large fountain trickles softly behind him, the air moist with the shooting spouts. You study him for a moment, waiting for him to say he was joking, to turn back to the Colin you had known.
"Are you serious?" you ask.
"Of course," he says, holding out his hand.
"There's no music."
"You don't need to hear the music to feel it," he says, taking your hand in his and pulling you in close. "Just follow along. It's got the same steps as the quadrille you know, but with a little more movement."
You nod your head and focus on the moves. Without music playing, it is a little harder to get into the rhythm, but he is correct, after a few steps, you can feel the music echoing inside of you.
His hand on your waist presses slightly, making your hips move more fluidly. You are certain if anyone were to see, it would mean scandal, but you cannot fight the smile growing on your face. Again, he shows you how to add more movement into a step, bringing the two of you closer again.
You have danced through one whole song in your head, and you don't want to stop anytime soon. Never in your life before have you danced like this. You feel so free, so graceful. And it is at this feeling, that you trip on an upturned stone and crash into Colin's arms.
The music has stopped playing in your mind. There is only the soft sound of water, the trill of crickets, and your pounding heart.
You have never been this close to a man. Your chest is flush against his. You can feel his breath, and watch as he looks down, too, at your bodies pressed together.
His eyes catch yours and everything seems to slow. There is only his warm brown eyes, locked onto your own, and the hand on your back that moves softly, comfortingly.
"Colin," you whisper. He smiles widely.
"I like when you say my name."
"I've said it a million times before," you say with a laugh.
"You've never said it like that."
"We should be heading back," you say. The hand on your back grows firmer, like he would do anything to keep you against him.
"No one knows we're out here," he says.
"My mother will come looking soon."
"Y/N," he whispers, his head ducking so that his words dance over your neck. You shiver slightly, and his smile only grows.
"I see what you mean," you say, looking back up at him, "I like the way you say my name, too." The look on his face is purely prideful.
"Don't go back inside," he says.
"We'll both be ruined."
"What if I don't care?" he asks.
"You do care," you say gently, "And so do I."
"Perhaps you're right."
"I am right, Colin," you say, beginning to pull away. He pulls you back in and your lips are a breath from his. His eyes flicker between your own and your lips, that are practically begging to be kissed. Your eyes close, against your better instinct, and you lean in.
Snap!
In an impossibly quick moment, Colin has pushed you out of his arms and ducked into an alcove of the garden. You wait for someone to appear, for your reputation to be ruined, but no one comes. Another minute passes and Colin comes out.
"Perhaps, you should get back inside, Y/N."
"Where did you run off to?" you ask, jumping again at his appearance. Before he can answer, you sigh. "Right," you say with a laugh.
"Let's get you back inside," he says. "That was too close."
Colin does get you back into the ball without scandal falling on you.
When you find your mother again, her face is nearly as red as her dress. Clearly, she has not followed her own rule regarding glasses of champagne. She says that Lord Charmbord had been searching for you, but you can't even begin to pretend to care.
For the rest of the ball, your eyes are always on Colin. Unfortunately, you don't get to spend any more of the evening with him. The closest you get is a moment on the dancefloor where you briefly switch partners.
His hand meets yours at the same time his eyes do, and once again, the world around you is gone. There is only the music and his face, looking at you in a way you can't precisely name, but that you're dying to know.
But just as soon as it happens, it is over, and you are back in the arms of a man you have absolutely no interest in.
As the night comes to a close, you bid Eloise and Lady Bridgerton goodnight. You can't help peering around the both of them for Colin, but just when it appears he is not coming and you have turned towards the exit, he calls your name.
"Miss Y/L/N," he says dashingly, "I would be remiss if I didn't bid you a goodnight."
"Goodnight, Mr. Bridgerton," you say, watching as he bends down to kiss your hand. Quietly, so that only you can hear, he says, "Say it just once more, please."
"Goodnight, Colin," you whisper. When he stands up straight, he is fighting off a smile. He bids your mother goodbye, and then you are getting handed off into your carriage, and ripped away from what feels like the first real night of your life.
The ride home is quiet. You answer your mother's few questions, but when she can see you're in no mood to talk, she sinks into her own thoughts.
The countryside is dark, but as you look out upon it, you can't help but wish. Wish that this was the very first page of your story with Colin, not where your story line will end. That he was as enchanted by you as much as you were by him. And pray that he is not in love with someone else.
At home, when you finally get into bed, you are restless. You toss and turn well into the early hours, questions rolling about your mind, all about Colin.
Too early the next morning, you are awoken by a lady's maid. The day after a ball is always busy. Gentleman callers all morning, and mothers and daughters in the afternoon, to get caught up on the morning callers.
While your handmaidens go about getting you dressed and pinning your hair up, you can't help but relieve the night before. It sparkles in your mind - truly the most perfect night you could have imagined.
You pray that it is not the last, but you know that you have to remain practical. Besides the looks and smiles he gave you, Colin did not lead on that he was interested in marriage anytime soon. You, on the other hand, were very interested in getting wed off this season.
As you walk down the steps to your sitting room, you assure yourself that it will be okay, if Colin does not feel the same.
"It is too early for callers!"
At the foot of the stairs, you hear your doorman arguing in hushed tones. You can hear another voice, but not clearly enough to match the sound to its owner. Before you can open the door and find out, your mother comes bustling down the staircase and passes you.
"Who could it be at this hour!" she says, ripping open the door.
Colin Bridgerton is standing in your doorway, a bouquet of orange tulips in hand. His eyes are wide when they circle to meet yours, but then they soften.
"Y/N," he says gently. The doorman stutters a response at this lack of formality, so Colin corrects himself. "I mean, Miss Y/L/N. Mrs. Y/L/N," he says, turning to look at your mother.
"I apologize for the early arrival, but I wanted to be the first here," he says.
"The first here for what?" your mother asks in shock.
"To call upon Miss Y/L/N, of course. You see, I shared quite an exquisite time with her last night, and hope that I may spend more time in her good company."
"Really?" you and your mother ask in unison. You laugh, and feeling bold, walk towards Colin. Still keeping a respectful distance from him, knowing that your doorman was watching closely, you take the tulips from him.
"Really," he says. "I was enchanted to meet you again, Y/N. Please don't have someone waiting on you."
"Not at all," you say. "Would you like to come in for tea, Colin?"
"I would love to," he says with a grin that nearly takes your breath away.

Over the sandy dunes - Colin Bridgerton X Reader
Tumblr media
A/n : I love this request!!!! I saw it pop up in my inbox and I just HAD to write it ASAP, thank you so much for the request <3
When Colin Bridgerton left London to escape all of the recent turbulent events, he felt he could breathe again. With no Lady Whistledown looking over his shoulder or a hundred debutantes wishing for a dance, he could simply relax. It was in his sixth week abroad when he took rest along the shores of a beach in Greece. He had woken up early to catch the morning sun rise and be alone with his thoughts. He liked the guides he had, but to find true solitude with no one around was a rarity even in the smallest of towns. Laying on his back he stared up at the sky as the stars retreated upwards into the deep blue, and as the first rays of light pricked his noses and ran into his eyes he sat up to gaze upon the marvel.
His view, however, was obstructed. Up ahead was a woman on the beach, standing close to the thrashing sea and wearing a light dress with a lilac shawl that was tussling with the burgeoning winds. Normally he would have hated this interruption as he had woken up early specifically to be alone, but when looking at her form and how she seemed to sway ever so delicately he couldn't help but advance.
“Lovely day, isnt it?” As he uttered these words she quickly spun around in shock, making him realise he was probably far too close for comfort ad taking a step back. As she assessed the moment and relaxed  she spoke. “Yes, it is beautiful. I’m sorry, I thought I was alone here.” Colin chuckled. “Did you not see me laying down mere metres behind you?” She joined him in a laugh. “I have been walking along the shore for quite a while now. I fear my gaze was fixed on the horizon, nothing could break me from it.”
A moment of silence fell between them. “Colin Bridgerton” he reached out his hand. “I am unsure if I can give you my familial name, but please, call me Y/n.” She gave him her hand and he planted a soft kiss onto it. “You speak with a similar accent, are you from London?” He enquired. “Not quite. I do have relatives in the city, but I live further North, close to Lincoln.”
Colin broke a smile. “Ah, well then, that explains it.” She looked at him, puzzled yet entertained. “Explains what?”
“Well I was unsure of how I could have never seen a face as beautiful as yours during a ball.” She looked down, and bit her lips. “If I may be honest, I was meant to debut this year, but I find the whole event to be pure drabble.” They shared a laugh. “In truth, I much prefer this to a ball. Endless exploration available at my very fingertips. It’s a wonder, is it not?” She looked at him, then towards the sunset, and she was returning his gaze once more he took her in, kissing her as she cupped his face.
This lasted for only a second before he pulled away. “I apologise, that was improper.” “Mr Bridgerton it was-” Another voice called down towards them from Colins residence. “Mr Bridgerton, there is a matter you must attend to!” Despite looking at his forlorn beau, he ran up the sandy dunes and over the hill, leaving Y/n alone.
Hours later, after sitting with the incident and realising he hadn’t allowed her to speak he ordered a carriage. According to his guided there was only one possible place anyone of her status could stay close by, but when he arrived he was informed that the family had left earlier on in the day, whilst refusing to give them their whereabouts. Upon his return to England he attempted to find her. Asking around if her name was known but without her last name, his efforts turned up nothing.
Colin fidgeted with his cuff, it had been slightly wrinkled earlier on yet he had no time to change it. He was never really a fan of these events, but knowing that Y/n detested them as well made it worse. The one event they conversed about, yet the subject was how she did not intend to be in attendance. His stomach churned thinking about it. How could he have left? No no, not just left, run up the dunes to get away from her. He had to take a breath and stop himself. It had been a year, he thought, he must move on. As he calmed and took a moment the doors swung open to announce another guest.
“Lady L/n and her daughter, Miss Y/n L/n”
His gaze was transfixed on her. As she came down the stairs her hand grasped by Colin, already a couple of steps up from his eagerness. “Miss Y/n, I believe I owe you a dance” He proclaimed, stroking her finger as he did and wondering about her ring size.

bridgerton sister ran away just before the beginning of her season and discovered by Colin in St Petersburg under a fake identity and bought back home
The Familiar Barmaid
x bridgerton!sister
Pronouns- She/her
Warning- Mother issues
Word Count- 933
Summary- The reader wants to be an author, but unfortunately, she has a season to get back to.
Tumblr media
Y/n Bridgerton had never dreamed of being married like her other sisters (Eloise excluded). Y/n loved reading, she imagined her own stories and stashed her written stories under her bed. She craved to be an author like the ones who made the books she admired. Her mother however had other plans for her since day one; come out, become the diamond of the season, and be courted by a handsome gentleman I loved who hopefully had an amazing title. I never craved that life I much preferred to live in the fantasy worlds I created in my head. This leads us to my escape from the Bridgerton household the night before my season.
I had packed the most important things to me; my writings, my favorite books, and the leftover money I had been saving from my gown fittings. I quietly took my horse out of the stable at night and rode the horse to a place no one would know Y/n Bridgerton.
I rode my horse for as far as she could go taking breaks in dingy inns that my Mother wouldn't dare to step foot in. By the time I was in St Petersburg, I was already short on funds. It was a better place to settle than most it had gorgeous views and so many new things to write about. As luck would have it the bar in town was looking for a barmaid. Unfortunately, the bar owner could tell very easily that I had no experience. Shockingly he gave me a chance! He said I reminded him of his daughter who recently married so her room above the bar was also available. It felt like fate like I had been sucked into my very own fantasy book.
I spent my days writing in the nearby park and the nights dealing with town drunks. Honestly, they weren't too bad just demanding their drinks. I learned quickly and I became their favorite barmaid only because I made the drinks the fastest but it still made me feel accomplished. It was a bittersweet feeling to have the town drunks appreciate me more than my mother but at least I was appreciated.
I felt true relief once the season was over no longer worried they would find me and make me a last-minute entry. The bar was just closing and I was washing the grimy tables when the chime of the door startled me. The man was bundled his scarf nearly covering his whole face.
I turned to him and frowned politely "I am so sorry sir we are just closing."
The man gasps once he hears me speak "Y/N?"
I quickly back up accidentally sending a chair to the ground with a loud thud, "I think you have the wrong woman sir."
My boss exits the backroom at the commotion, "This fella bothering you Rose?"
"Are you serious Y/n? Rose? Be a little more original," the man unwraps his scarf and my fists immediately tighten.
"Colin, what are you doing here?" I practically growl.
"You know this man Rose? Seems a little too uptight for you, but I am not here to judge your taste in suitors." My boss chuckles finding his comment hilarious.
Colin gags, "That is my little sister I'll have you know! And I am bringing you right home Mother has been worried sick about you!"
I roll my eyes "She probably did not even know about my absence until Lady Whistledown announced it. How did she cover it up? Am I in the States visiting my cousins?"Colin's face turns beat red which tells me I am right.
Colin tries to change the subject, "Your sisters miss you dearly, Daphne was devasted you were not there for her wedding."
I gasped, "Daphne is already married! The season just ended!"
Colin rubbed his arm, "There were a lot of issues with this season Y/n… honestly we all could have used some of that Y/n wisdom. I especially could have used some of that wisdom." He mumbled the last part seeming very embarrassed to admit it.
"Oh, Colin… I am so sorry. I miss my siblings all dearly but I am not meant for the home carer life. I am meant to be out there writing about anything I can get my hands on." I gesture to the world around me.
"That is one good thing about your departure, no one thinks you are Lady WhistleDown anymore," He smirks.
"Oh what a pity I did like causing fear and scaring the men off with the promise to write about them," I smile.
Colin sighs, "I will make you a deal Y/n, travel with me during my studies. You can explore the world that way, but you must write to Mother and the rest of your siblings and let them know you are safe."
"You know she or Anthony will just drag me back home," I frown.
"Not with me by your side, I am sure I can convince Anthony and she can convince Mama." He smiles as the plan begins to form in his head.
I smiley widely, "You have yourself a deal Colin Bridgerton."
He smiles back as my boss lets out a few stray tears, "You truly are just like my daughter, just as stubborn and hot-headed. Be sure to visit your welcome back anytime."
I gave him a side hug, "Oh boss you big old softie."
Colin laughs, "Y/n you are truly something."
"Why thank you," I take a bow. "Shall we take our leave?"
"We shall," Colin smiles.

As you grew up you moved to France when you where 15 which broke Colin’s heart being only able too see you once in summer and once in winter when you visit you’re family when you come home when you’re 17 he can’t help but kiss you you tell him that as much as you want it you two can’t do that he tells you that he will marry you so it does no difference if you do it know or wait until you’re actually married you can’t help but smile that he really wants to live up too his promise he gave you all this years ago. When you’re 22 you’re mother thinks that you toyed around long enough traveling the world and it’s now Time for you to get married as a maid makes you ready for the ball she tells you that all man would be happy to be you’re husband you can only scoff everyone tells you that you’re the prettiest diamond this year but no man would be interested in you if they knew you aren’t a virgin anymore but nobody will ever find out and you really only want to marry one man either way. As you arrive at the ball all eyes are on you you simply smile Colin can’t help but rush over to you he hasn’t seen you In years and is so happy to have you back and this time he won’t let you go again. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
5 years
you ran as fast as your chubby legs could take you. colin ran after you, running through your mothers treasured rosebuds and into his family’s garden. he yelled your name and finally you stopped, sitting on the grass, your mother would be mad to see your dress ruined. you fidgeted with the fabric and colin slid into the spot next to you. you two were kids, and looking back it could’ve just been the expectations that made colin say that, but deep down, you wondered if he meant it.
“when we grow up,” colin opened his hand and revealed one of your mothers blooming rosebuds, he tucked it in your hair, albeit messily, and smiled a toothy grin, “im going to marry you.”
you didn’t know what the feeling was back then, but you’ve come to realize that it was the feeling of your heart swelling with love.
15 years
it had been almost ten years since colin’s promise. you were smart as a child, and ended up keeping the wilted rosebud that he had put in your hair, putting it in a box for safekeeping.
as you were preparing to head over to the bridgertons for tea, which was really just spending time with colin as he read to you, your mother had called you down to the drawing room. you were confused, your mother had never used the drawing room for anything. but that made you wonder if this was serious.
you went anyway, and your father was suprisingly there too. he smiled weakly and you sat down.
“darling,” your mother began, looking at your father for encouragement, “your father got a job in france. paris, to be exact. we’re moving next week.” as the words left her mouth you swore you could hear a pin drop. it was like your entire life had flashed before your eyes.
you didn’t react, you just got up, and immediately took off next door. you could hear your parents shouts as you left. the afternoon sun was beating down as you ran across your garden and to the bridgerton house.
you skipped all the formalities as you ran into the family room, and you looked at all the faces of colin’s family. colin was nowhere in sight and you were struggling to hold your own tears in. you struggled to get a deep breath in as you went outside and saw colin going up the steps. he saw your distressed face and immediately he ran up to you.
colin took you to a secluded area in his garden, knowing just the rumors that would be spread if anyone saw him holding you.
you cried for what seemed like hours. hours that colin just sat by your side and let you use his coat as your personal tissue.
finally, you stopped crying and you looked at colin. you explained what had happened and he scoffed, your beauty in this moment was absolute that he hardly listened to what you had said. even as your arms were wrapped around his waist, the blush on your teary face was enough to make him kiss you suddenly.
you kissed him for ages. the faint taste of strawberries on his mouth, and the soft sprinkles of touches of his fingers.
“i promise, that the minute you come back, when it’s time, you will be my wife.” he kissed you once more.
18 years
you had been back in london a handful of times since your family had moved to france. your home next to the bridgertons was still in your family’s name, just had a few caretakers in the rest of the year that you didn’t visit.
you had no real reason to come back to london, if it weren’t for colin bridgerton, of course.
you met with him for tea, and you caught up with him.
he smiled at you, pouring you another cup of tea, his eyes lingered on your lips, and as you reached, his eyes drifted to your breasts. he fought hard to keep himself composed, especially when you flickered your knowing gaze to his, and coyly sipped your tea.
“you’ll be the death of me.” he whispered, knowing his family was behind him. now as you were a grown woman, you couldn’t be unchaperoned with a man, anyone forbid just the thought.
but both you and colin had planned for his sneaking over to your manor later in the night. but for now, you tried to be civil.
“i wanted to tell you that uh..” you paused, setting the tea down. colin had asked about your family and why they didn’t come with you, especially when a girl like you should be preparing for her debut, and your parents were instrumental in that.
“the reason i’m not debuting in this years season is because,” you paused, and you fidgeted again, cheeks blushing red. colin reached over and put a hand on yours to stop you from fidgeting.
“tell me, my love.” he looked at you worriedly and you sighed, “i’m going to study abroad in brazil. and then most likely greece. until i’m twenty, which then my parents said i will debut.” the words left you so suddenly and colin looked at you, expression unreadable.
you gulped, watching colin pull his hand back. he nodded, “brazil? greece?” he knew his older brothers were just a few feet away but he couldn’t help the raise in his tone, “was france not enough for you? not enough that you have to leave me again, and again!”
you flinched slightly and as colin stood up, huffing as he walked away, you felt defeated, especially with the eyes of the elder bridgertons on you.
you hadn’t expected the knock on your bedroom door. in fact, you had totally forgotten about it.
you opened it, and colin stepped into your bedroom, which conveniently was on the first floor.
colin looked at you and held your face in his hands, “i’m so sorry.” he kissed your cheek and you nodded, holding onto his arm.
“i understand. i- it’s not ideal, but you know me..” you tried to give a smile and colin nodded, “you know the minute you finally come back after being,” he laughed, “worldly, im going to show you a whole new world.” he promised.
you kissed him deeply and your hands found the buttons of his coat, “why don’t you show me now?”
colin paused, pulling back, “i- are you sure?”
“are you sure that you’ll make me your wife?” you raised an eyebrow.
he nodded, “of course, my love.”
you pulled the buttons open with a swift move, “then i’m sure.”
it didn’t take long before colin had tore your clothes off, and he had slipped inside of you. the feeling was unmatched. for the first time, since those first teasing kisses and feels, colin could now finally truly, worship your body.
dawn broke when you had finally called it quits. you were exhausted, and colin was mildly snoring. you nudged him, reluctantly you sent him off, afraid the maids would see him on his way out.
he kissed your forehead as you snuggled into your bed, watching him leaves you would explain the mess to the maids later, but for now, you saw colin in your dreams.
20 years
your return to england permanently had been the talk of the ton. your family had moved back to your home next to the bridgertons and you were to finally take up your part as a wife. obviously to colin, your parents even assumed he’d be one of your callers.
presenting yourself to the queen was nerve wracking. even more so when she declared you her diamond of the season, and you suddenly had to step up your game.
when it came time to the first ball of the season, you were nervous. colin hadn’t called on you in the first week and now entering the second, you were beginning to get worried. to think, you actually hadn’t seen him at all.
you had gone over to the bridgertons on the second night of your arrival. they invited you and your family for dinner and there you didn’t see colin. you did chat with daphne and anthony, who both redirected your questions about colin.
was there something someone wasn’t telling you?
your arrival at lady danbury’s ball was highly anticipated. you were the diamond afterall. your dance card was filled not even ten minutes after you arrived. it made you smile, but still no sign of colin. it was difficult to say that you had a clue where he was. in the time you were in france, colin had written only a few times, and because you were so busy with the fast tracked life there, you hardly did too. you wondered if maybe this whole marriage thing was just a heat of the moment thing, and he had got what he wanted.
your suspicions of his whereabouts only grew when you met the colorful penelope featherington at lady danbury’s ball. you hadn’t met on your visits, but seeing her now, she seemed to be eloise’s best friend. you chatted with penelope and she seemed to ask a lot of questions.
“how long have you known the bridgertons?” you glanced slightly at her dance card and saw it was empty. you felt your heart sink for her, especially when she seemed so eager to dance.
“my family has lived next to them for years. it wasn’t until colin and i began spending time together that our families got closer.” you nodded and penelope smiled.
“spending time?” she bit her lip nervously and you nodded again, “i was four and he was five when he shoved me face first into my mamas rosebuds-“
“-and we spent the rest of the afternoon helping her gardener plant new ones.” the voice was like music to your ears. you resisted the urge to hug him right then and there but you turned around and found colin looking at you with eyes that practically left you naked.
you smiled, “only after you picked the thorns, quite literally, out of my side.” you had the brightest smile on your face and colin shared the same. a laugh sparked between the two of you, only broken by penelope.
“colin! you’re back from greece!” she had a look on her face that you knew all too well and you raised an eyebrow as you looked towards colin, “greece?”
colin looked at penelope and back at you, “will you excuse us, pen?”
colin looked at daphne and gave her a nod to follow the two of you outside. couldn’t be unchaperoned, like always.
“pen?” your voice finally broke as the three of you went outside. it was quiet, and no people were outside, so you let it all out.
colin began to speak but you raised a hand, “no. you listen to me, mr. bridgerton-“ your tone was surprising to colin who merely nodded and let you speak your piece.
“i’ve been back in town for nearly two weeks and there’s been no sight of you. your family has dodged my questions on your whereabouts,” you glanced at daphne who smiled sheepishly. she knew everything about your relationship with colin. you trusted her, even with the information that you had slept together. “and you come back here thinking all will be well when you cut into my cute story, which did work for a moment but that girl,” you huffed, face getting red, “she has the biggest crush on you, if you haven’t noticed, and you start out by calling her ‘pen’?! don’t you dare give other girls cute nicknames besides me, colin bridgerton!” you tried to compose yourself and colin was nodding, but you continued, “and greece! you practically crucified me for going to greece and you went?!” you practically screamed.
colin reached out suddenly, and held you steady as you broke down, “i- you had me so worried. i-“ you sniffled, “i thought after everything, after that night, that you didn’t want me anymore.” you cried.
colin pulled you into his arms suddenly, not caring of the scandal, “if you had let me explain- i would’ve told you that i was in greece buying your engagement ring.” he said it so casually you had to blink to make sure you heard him right.
you pulled away and looked at him, a smile on his face, “what?”
colin pulled out the ring and opened the box it was in, “now, i could either give it to you now, or we can have some extravagant event where i will propose to you in front of everyone and it’ll be this whole thing.” he seemed to ramble on and you shut him up with a kiss.
“i love you, colin bridgerton.” you whispered, and colin held your waist as he slid the ring on your finger, “i love you more, my love.”
the return to the ball after your hot and heavy kissing was bewildering. daphne had slipped away to give you some privacy but had come back just in the perfect nick of time to make it seem like she had never left.
you ran first to your parents and showed them the ring. your mother congratulated you, and your father nodded, “fine young man, that bridgerton.”
penelope stood off to the side with eloise. a broken expression was on her face as colin announced your engagement. a congratulations throughout the ballroom was met and penelope tried to seem happy.
“what’s wrong, pen?” eloise only turned her attention off of you and her brother to look at her friend.
“i- nothing. im really happy for colin.” she tried to hold an upbeat tone but eloise shook her head.
“i’ve tried to tell you for years but- my brother has always loved y/n. since he was a kid, he’s promised to marry her. it’s quite endearing actually, but after hearing the story over and over again, it gets annoying. he actually told all of us not to say anything to her as a surprise. he had gone to greece to get her that ring, actually.” eloise smiled, “she’s really perfect for him.”
penelope’s heart shattered as she nodded, walking away from her friend and she began to breathe heavily, frantically until she hit a corner. the hallway seemed to be empty until she heard daphne’s voice floating down from the library.
penelope could hear your laughter and colin’s murmurs.
“-and now you don’t have to worry about nerves on the first night! you already got that over with!” daphne laughed, you and colin laughing along with her.
penelope couldn’t even believe what she had heard. you and colin had sex already? before you were even engaged?
penelope smirked as she knew what she could do with this information, lady whistledown could destroy y/n’s reputation.
without noticing, penelope, who had her ear practically glued to the door, stumbled into the room as daphne opened it.
“penelope?” daphne looked at penelope who was on the floor.
“oh my god, are you alright?” you grabbed her hand and tried to help her up but she shrugged you off, “don’t touch me.”
you pulled back and colin went to help her up. unsurprisingly, she let him.
“i-“ daphne looked alarmed as she thought back to the conversation and penelope looked at you, “i heard everything.” she muttered and you nearly fainted.
just anyone else knowing, even though you were engaged, it would destroy you.
colin stepped forward, “if you know what’s good for you, pen, you won’t say anything.” he tried to seem harsh, and it actually worked.
things were put into perspective that colin would also be destroyed, involved in a scandal like this was practically forever.
penelope balked, nodding, “i-“ she didn’t say anything as she looked at you briefly before fleeing.
daphne put a hand on her chest to steady her rhythm and you looked at colin who sighed, “i’m sorry, my love.” he kissed your forehead.
22 years
marriage was a blissful dream. you woke up everyday to seeing the love of your life next to you. not to mention the child that colin had given you, just recently.
you were heavily pregnant, any day now and you’d be parents. colin kissed your belly goodnight and goodmorning, and everyday you would go over to his family home and spend time with everyone there.
as a wedding gift, your parents had given you the manor, and it was perfect, being able to see his family just next door, and in a place you were raised in to raise your own child.
your daughter was born just after daphne’s wedding to the duke. she had been your little gift, born in the bliss and love, you realized something.
“colin..” you looked down at your daughter, who just a few hours old, still didn’t have a name.
“remember that rose bud you had given me?” colin nodded, he was snuggled closely to your side as you looked down at your daughter.
“what if..” you smiled, cooing at soft hair that was like colin’s, “we name her rose?”
colin smiled, “rose bridgerton?”
you nodded, “what began it all.”
“it’s beautiful, you brilliant woman.” he kissed you once before muttering something about the name bud for your son.

Pairing: Anthony Bridgerton x fem! reader
Summary: Maybe all of his visits aren't exactly to see your brother
Word count: 1.9k
Warnings: unedited, fluff, mentions of unrequited love (or is it) and I think that's all

“The feelings that hurt most, the emotions that sting most, are those that are absurd – The longing for impossible things, precisely because they are impossible; nostalgia for what never was; the desire for what could have been; regret over not being someone else; dissatisfaction with the world’s existence. All these half-tones of the soul’s consciousness create in us a painful landscape, an eternal sunset of what we are.”
You once read that in a book, and could not help but relate to it.
The worst feeling you could ever feel is that, the one of unrequited love. The feeling of loving somebody and knowing that somebody does not feel the same for you.
It is ridiculous, that feeling that you get when you see him, when he takes a moment out of his day to even talk to you and ask you how you have been, leaving you happy that he even talked to you when you know he only did it out of courtesy. But you still lived for those moments.
Birds chirped, the sun hitting your face and the wind breezed your skin while you read one of your favorite romance books, the pages held carefully between your fingers.
You were immersed in the pages, paying zero attention to anything but the love story in front of you.
Pride and Prejudice.
Ever since you were little, you wished to live a love story of your own. You wished for the kind of love Mr. Darcy had for Elizabeth. One where a man loved you so deeply he would do anything for you. One where you were the only woman he could ever think about. It was all you could dream of.
But that was all it was, a dream.
Men in the society were nothing like the ones you read in books. They were arrogant, selfish, pompous bastards who cared nothing but to have a beautiful lady on their arm that made them look good.
You wanted someone kind, who didn’t care whether you were beautiful or not, that loved his family fiercely and protected his loved ones with everything he has, so they would not be hurt.
Someone who was affectionate and paid attention to the things you loved. Who took time out of his day to talk to you and ask you how was your day, and that he was interested in what you had to say.
And the only one you could think of that fit those requirements was your brother’s best friend. But even then, you doubted he had an interest in you.
You were Simon Basset’s younger sister, the Duke of Hastings. Or well, you were his half sister as his father remarried again once Simon was 9 years old in hopes of having a son who was not an ‘idiot’ as Simon’s father used to say but what a shock when instead of the son he desired so turned out to be the exact opposite and that was when he lost hope.
Simon, oh sweet Simon. He was the best brother you could ever ask for, of course he was very overprotective of you and would chase suitors who he thought did not deserve you away, which meant every single one, but you did not know what you would do without him
Even with you being his half sister, he cared very deeply for you and did not hate you for what his father did to him.
“You are still reading that?”
You snapped your head up coming face to face with the viscount. You held back a smile and slightly bowed your head feeling yourself starting to become giddy at his presence.
“Viscount Bridgerton” You greeted before looking back at your book, trying to appear uninterested “Not at all, I have finished it weeks ago but there is no harm in reading it again, is there?”
“Not at all” He shook his head “ but surely you do not enjoy reading the same thing over and over again, do you? I, for one, do not enjoy reading about silly things about love in silly books” you look at him in disbelief
“They are not silly, I think everything I read in these books are incredibly beautiful, and yes, I do enjoy reading these things” you responded “Why did you even decide to come outside to judge the books I read? My brother is inside in his study, go and bother him instead”
He let out a laugh “ Now why would I do that when you are here just waiting for me to bless you with my presence” you glare at him making him laugh once again “okay, I already fulfilled my purpose, now I will leave, I will see you later, princess” he winked at you before starting to walk back to your home
You make sure he is inside the house before you smile widely, shaking your head remembering the encounter.
You could not even count on both of your hands the number of times Anthony has been on your home the past few weeks. It would seem as if he was also living here from the how much he frequents here. Even if Simon was not present, he would still appear to keep you company for a few hours, chaperoned of course. If you did not know better, you would have assumed he appeared constantly at the Hastings House just to see you but of course, you did know better.
But you cannot even complain, you certainly did not mind seeing him around your home. You did not mind one bit.
Tumblr media
It had not even been 2 days before the viscount appeared once more in your home. You were not surprised to say the least.
“Back once more?” You said when you saw him walk through the door, walking down the stairs. He turned towards you and smiled “It seems as if this is your home from how frequent you are seen here now a days”
He laughs “Oh come on, it is not as if you do not enjoy my presence around you” he teases
“Quite the opposite, my lord, I consider you a nuisance” You responded amused, holding back your smile “Like a fly constantly buzzing around my ear, very much annoying” you stopped in front of him
“Well ouch” he exclaimed hurt but you knew better, you could see the laughter dancing around in his eyes, you swatted him on the arm playfully.
“My brother is not here, I assumed he would have told you he had some business to attend to in Clyvedown and would not be back until 3 days from now” You informed him after
“Oh really? I was not informed of that” He feigned confusion “Well, now that I am here, I am sure you would not mind me making you company for a few hours, you know, so it does not go to waste the trip I made here” he added once he saw the face you made
You thought for a few moments before you responded “Well alright, I suppose there is no harm in that”
“Wonderful, shall we go to promenade?” Anthony offered
“Now?” You questioned “But I am not even dressed to go promenade and even if there are people in the park, as soon as they see us together they will think we are courting”
“You look beautiful regardless, it does not matter hoe you are dressed” He compliments “Come on, let’s just go, no one will even be in the park”
You just laugh before gesturing at him to go on, shaking your head at his silliness.
Tumblr media
“No one will be here, you said” You tease as you walked along the trail
“Well….” He trailed off “I lied. I knew there would be people here, it is a sunday, after all, everyone comes to the park on sundays” he looked away from you
You furrowed your eyebrows confused. Why on earth would he want people to see the two of you together? Does he not know the rumors the ton will create about the two of you? And they would mostly affect him as he is the one that does not want the ton to think he has plans of marrying any time soon. But maybe you should not worry much, you are his best friend’s sister after all, you hope they will only think he is keeping you company as your brother is out of town. On the other hand, if the ton thinks you are courting, your suitors might cease.
“Why would you lie?” you asked “I mean, I have no problem of being seen together, but people might get the wrong idea and any suitors I have might back off. And I plan on marrying this season, at the latest next season if I do not find anyone I even remotely like” you pursued your lips at the thought of not marrying because of a misunderstanding.
Of course, it is not like anything will happen if you do not marry or get engaged soon. But what you meant is that if gentlemen think Anthony is courting you, they will not approach you, or well they will since men always go after a lady when they think someone of importance is courting them, but you do not want a man to pursue you because someone of high social standing is interested in you and they want to see what is it that strung him in, but because they like you for who you are.
You do want your fairytale love story after all, or at least marry for love.
“Maybe I want them to get the wrong idea” Anthony mused, you snapped your head towards him quickly
“Do you want me to become a spinster?” you looked at him incredulously “because I will if no 0one wants to court me in the next 2 seasons”
He laughs at your comment “No, not at all” he shook his head “ what I meant is that, maybe, I want your suitors to back off so… so that I can pursue you better, without anyone trying to come between us” you stare at him shocked, stopping in your tracks
He stops along with you, laughing at your expression. “Are you going to say anything?”
“ I just – what – I do not know – what about Simon?” you stutter, your mind still trying to comprehend what you just heard
“What about him?” Anthony shrugs nonchalantly
“Will be not be mad if you start courting me? I am his little sister, and he is very protective over me” you noted worriedly
“He is the last person who can be mad at me courting his little sister when he himself is courting mine” he answers and you nod, looking around as you noted some stares that were upon you both “So?”
“So, what?” you looked at him curiously
“You never answered to what I said” your face twisted in confusion at his words “ Will you let me court you?” He looked back at you nervously. Ah right. That.
You hummed in realization “Alright” you nodded “Just know I am very hard to please” you teased
“Good thing I have much experience in how to please a woman” He joked and you shot him a glare making his playful expression disappear when you turned your head away from him “ Right. Sorry. If I am going to court you, no speaking about how much I pleased other women” you shot him another glare making him wince
You huff, taking your hand out of his arm and walking away “Hey! Y/n, I am sorry, I am not going to speak anymore” he called out from behind you “Wait for me, will you? I am sorry, just do not be mad or annoyed at me” You let a smile come onto your face at his pleading.
This will be fun.

The smell of fresh bread filled the small room in Italy, they sighed a breath of comfort pulling the bed covers around them as they sat up in bed. Beside them, Colin was still fast asleep, his back bathing in the warm morning air.
Tiptoeing they moved across the room, throwing on a dressing gown and stepping out onto the balcony. Below them most of the local people and tourists were already going about their days. The ring on their left hand glittered in the sunlight.
“I’ll get you a better one once we return to London” Colin said from behind them, he wrapped his arms around their waist and rested his head on their shoulder.
Still holding their hand out they exhaled, “I can’t imagine there ever being a better ring than this”,leaning back in his chest.
The wedding was perfect even if it was just the two of them, the vicar and two local people to bear witness, it was nothing like the rich and lavish weddings the upper circle of London had. But to them both it was the finest wedding anyone living and dead had ever had.
He held his new spouse and rocked them, “what do you say to visiting the Tower of Pisa?”. They turned to face him and kissed his cheek.
“We should bring a picnic, like we would in Hyde park”
Tumblr media
Colin held onto their hand the whole way, growing tighter as the crowds grew. It was truly a beautiful day. Many people, tourists and locals had also chosen that day to visit the Tower of Pisa.
Colin laid the blanket onto the floor and helped them sit down, a smirk rose. “I could get used to this treatment”. Colin kissed them, a rush went through them. The freedom to kiss him without worry was intoxicating.
“Wait until we return to London” he said, laying down with his head in their lap. They went on to play with his brown hair.
“How will we even explain? Both our families would have the news by now.” They said worriedly.
“We’re married now and that can’t be undone. Certainly not after last night” he laughed. They laughed too, playfully hitting his chest.
“We ran away. I was my Aunt's heir and you’re a Bridgeton! The rumours will be impossible to escape” they said.
“So we never return?” He asked.
“Even if we don’t they would just find us” they sighed. He sat up and kissed them again.
“What about a life on the run? We changed our names and live free?”
They raised their eyebrows, “neither of us can live without our comforts. Sallow as it is, I like my life and I don’t want to live anything else”.
He put himself back into their lap, “thank god. I regretted the words the moment I spoke them” he smiled shyly.
“What would life be like then? Back in London” you asked.
“Our own home, we could stay in the summer house” Colin suggested. “Parties every week, tea on the lawn, days in bed without a care in the world”.
“Summer tours each year” you grinned.
“So much to see so much time”.
“And I get to spend it all with you, what could be more perfect?”.

Chapter 6: in a world of boys he's a gentleman
series masterlist previous part || next part
Tumblr media
pairing: colin bridgerton x enemy!fem!reader WC: 4.2k words
Warnings: period-typical gender roles, Eloise being the best, Colin finally having brain cell(s), but then very quickly losing aforementioned brain cells
Summary: It took precisely two days in England for you to utterly despise Colin Bridgerton. It took him approximately twelve hours after that to hate you right back. But he doesn't care that you're the only person in the ton who doesn't like him. You're set to marry someone else anyway, right?
Tumblr media
May 30, 1816 – One week has passed since the unfortunate revelation of Lord Barlow’s true nature, and Lady Y/N Montclair has yet to make an appearance at a ball. Could it be that the Duke’s betrayal has left her too disillusioned? Perhaps the eligible gentlemen of London have failed to meet her exacting standards. One can't help but wonder if Lady Y/N be present at tonight’s ball, where the ton's most eligible bachelors will undoubtedly be vying for her attention now that she is decidedly searching for a new suitor. Who among them shall be lucky enough to capture her attention? This author does not know, but hopefully, this evening reveals more of Lady Montclair’s intentions.
Colin was grinding his teeth, his right eye twitching slightly as he glared at Eloise, with whom he had been arguing for the better part of the last hour.
“It’s not like I haven’t tried to be agreeable! She’s just impossible,” he ground out.
Colin was about finished with having to face criticism from his sister when you were the one who had ignored his attempt at a truce.
“It certainly doesn’t help that you rile her up every single time you see her. She’s trying to find a husband, mind you!” Eloise shouted back.
She had grown quite close to you in the past weeks, and she knew the kind of pressure you were under tonight. It was your first ball after finding out the Duke had sneaked away from the Bridgerton ball with Miss Barrington, and your full focus would be on finding a new suitor. Eloise generally preferred to stay out of your neverending conflict with Colin, but she knew he would never understand what you were going through. The very least she could do was ensure that he acted decently toward you, though it seemed like even that would prove a challenge.
“Exactly! I was the one who wanted to warn her about Lord Barlow’s betrayal, and now she thinks I’m the one who gave him access to our courtyard,” snapped Colin.
He couldn’t believe Eloise. How could she not see that you were one of the most infuriating, unpleasant, and insolent people in the ton? Why was she so intent on defending you? Colin was irritated beyond belief, and he wanted nothing more than to never speak with you again after the horse races. You had promptly ignored him after accusing him of orchestrating Lord Barlow and Miss Barrington’s escapade, and he spent the rest of the afternoon angrily stealing glances at you as you chatted pleasantly with his sister.
And to learn that you still wanted to find a husband? You could become a spinster, for all he cared. And he didn’t. He didn’t care. About you or about Lord Barlow, or frankly, about anything that had transpired since the Bridgerton ball. All he knew was that tonight, he would be forced to watch you bat your eyelashes and giggle softly as you talked to countless men when all he got from you were angry stares and sarcastic laughs.
“She’s the one who doesn’t want to be on good terms with me,” he added stubbornly, crossing his arms.
Eloise let out an exasperated groan and rolled her eyes. “Colin! Can you not find it in yourself to set aside your dislike for her and understand that she is an unmarried lady who just lost a titled man she was practically guaranteed to marry? She is in a precarious situation, not to mention feeling heartbroken and betrayed.”
In truth, Colin thought, he didn’t understand. He couldn’t even begin to. He had never faced that kind of pressure before, certainly not about something as trivial as marriage, and suddenly he felt guilty for wanting to spend the entire evening tormenting you so he could avoid watching you amass suitors.
Sensing that her words had struck a nerve, Eloise took advantage of her brother’s waning resolve. “You are Colin Bridgerton, Mayfair’s sweetheart! I don’t understand why you can’t act that way with her.”
“She doesn’t want that! She doesn’t want me!” Colin yelled, pinching the bridge of his nose as he screwed his eyes shut in frustration.
But Eloise didn’t let up. “I’ll wager she wants that tonight. You don’t need to kiss the ground she walks on. Just be civil and refrain from any ungentlemanly conduct. It’s her first ball since the Lord Barlow scandal, and she doesn’t need to look bad in front of a crowd of eligible bachelors.”
“I don’t ever do it on purpose!” he defended.
“You could’ve fooled me,” scoffed Eloise. Then, softening her tone, she added, “Just tonight. Please.”
“Fine,” he relented.
If it was so important to Eloise, he would do it. He supposed he would want someone to do that to Eloise if she was ever in your same position. But he was already dreading the night. He had never particularly enjoyed balls, and he knew tonight would be especially dreadful. Usually, your arguments provided prime entertainment, and if he wasn’t allowed to fight with you tonight, he would just have to endure the monotony of the ballroom without any respite.
---
You drew in a sharp breath as you entered the ballroom, looking around at the crowd nervously. Charlotte placed a comforting hand on your shoulder and led you toward the back of the room. Had she chosen to go to the furthest place from the entrance simply to torture you? You were nervous enough as it was; you didn’t need the added anxiety of having everyone’s eyes on you as you walked through the crowd.
You had opted for an elegant white gown tonight. Well, your mother had suggested it and you had inevitably agreed to wear it.
“It’s meant to look like a wedding dress!” she had exclaimed earlier. “It shows you’re still in the marriage mart despite everything that’s happened, and you’ll have gentlemen queuing up to dance with you.”
Whatever the reasoning behind the gown, you had to admit that it was beautiful. It accentuated your figure, and you could already feel plenty of keen eyes on you and more than a few furtive whispers. Though you couldn’t make out exactly what people were saying, you were sure you heard your name mentioned several times. However, you smiled gracefully at everyone anyway, wanting to avoid being seen as a complete laughingstock after losing Arthur. The Duke, you corrected yourself. He was no longer Arthur to you.
“Y/N,” you heard Eloise’s excited voice beside you.
You turned to see her smiling face and squeezed Charlotte’s hand to let her know she could go on without you.
“Hello, El,” you greeted, smiling wide.
“The balls have been torture without you! I’m so glad you’re finally here,” she gushed, taking your hand and leading you to a less crowded part of the ballroom.
You relaxed slightly. At least one person here didn’t hate you. But perhaps she was the only one. As you kept speaking with Eloise, you realized that not a single bachelor had come to ask you for a dance. Usually, you had to reject quite a few gentlemen within the first few minutes of being at a ball, but your dance card remained empty tonight.
Swallowing nervously, you looked around the room and assessed the gravity of your situation. Plenty of people were staring at you, but no one had moved toward you. Were they waiting for someone else to walk up to you? Did they not want to be the first to dance with you? Or did this mean that Lord Barlow’s actions had well and truly ruined you? Feeling the familiar beginnings of tears forming in your eyes, you quickly started to panic. What would your parents say?
You were trying to focus on Eloise’s words, but all you could hear was your rapid heartbeat, and you were surprised people around you couldn’t hear it, too. Your stomach flipped uncomfortably as you realized that you might have truly fallen out of favor with the ton. The thought made you feel sick. This wasn’t how you wanted the season to go. How you needed it to go.
Just as you were ready to bolt outside in search of fresh air, you felt a tap on your shoulder. Your stomach clenched, and for a fleeting moment, you hoped it was Colin Bridgerton. As much as you weren’t looking forward to the inevitable antagonism you would face from him, and as much as you knew that he wasn’t interested in anything from you other than an argument, the thought of engaging with someone of the opposite gender provided a fleeting sense of relief. Anything to momentarily divert your thoughts from the Duke's betrayal and the disheartening realization of your diminished standing in society. Although knowing Colin, he would probably bring up the subject just to spite you.
However, as you turned around, you came face to face with your brother. A tiny rush of disappointment coursed through you, and you crinkled your face in confusion. It was a disconcerting realization, indeed, to find yourself yearning for the company of Colin Bridgerton, the very individual you despised most in the ton.
Leaning down close to you, Louis asked lowly, “Ça va?” (Are you alright?).
“Louis,” you rolled your eyes and nodded, trying to convince him–and yourself–that you were fine. “Ça va” (I’m alright).
“Excuse me just a moment,” spoke Eloise as she looked between you and your brother. She squeezed your hand and turned around, leaving you with Louis.
You cringed, internally hearing your parents scolding you for speaking French around her. But Louis, unphased by Eloise’s exit, spoke again. “Non, j’suis serieux. On peut y aller,” he insisted (No, I’m serious. We can leave).
It was nice of him to check up on you. But it only left you feeling worse, a sobering reminder that your situation was dire enough that your brother was actually being sweet to you.
As much as you would have liked to, you knew you couldn’t leave the ball. It would only make it worse to flee now. Your parents had already allowed you a weeklong break from social events, and they would be most displeased to find out that you were giving up so soon after your re-entry into society.
So, you steeled yourself, forcing yourself to keep your tone light. “Leave the ball? For me or for you?” you asked Louis, poking him teasingly.
He relaxed upon hearing your light tone, letting out a breath as he smiled down at you. Your parents had asked him to be especially careful with you tonight, and he was left with sickening worry. You were his little sister, and as much as you had your differences, he still thought himself in charge, at least partially, of your wellbeing.
The worst part was that he knew exactly the kind of man Andrew Barlow was, and he was beside himself with guilt that he had even let the man near you. But you seemed to be getting through it, he noted, relieved.
Colin was rooted to the spot across the ballroom, staring at you as you engaged in easy conversation with your brother. How you could be so disagreeable toward him, and completely pleasant with everyone else was absolutely beyond him.
But what really caught his attention tonight was your attire. You were wearing a white gown, and he briefly wondered if that was what your wedding dress would have looked like. He couldn’t help it; you looked positively stunning, and he was angry because he knew if he even attempted to talk to you, you would most likely bite his head off.
Colin jumped as he felt a tap on his shoulder, slightly embarrassed at having been discovered staring at you. He turned around to face his mother and Eloise smiling far too innocently for his liking.
“Colin, go dance with Y/N, please.”
“Can’t Benedict do it?” Colin pleaded. He would do anything not to have to speak with you right this moment. It was far better to look at you from a distance, where he could pretend you didn’t completely despise him.
“He’s dancing with Penelope Featherington at the moment, so no. Colin, it’s one dance!” Violet responded, exasperated.
“It’s not like she won’t have anyone else asking her,” grumbled Colin unhappily. Though, come to think of it, he hadn’t actually seen anyone ask you for a dance tonight.
“Colin,” Eloise pleaded. “If they see you dancing with her, they’ll be more inclined to speak with her.”
Remembering his conversation with his sister from earlier, Colin accepted defeat, mumbling a low “just this once.”
He found himself growing increasingly nervous as he made his way over to you, and he clenched his fists to keep his hands from shaking. What had gotten into him? This was merely a dance like any other. He’d done it many times before, and he could do it with you.
He cleared his throat as he reached your side, drawing you out of your conversation with Louis.
“Not you, too,” you sighed upon seeing him. “I’ve had enough of a difficult time today without your input.”
Colin was momentarily unable to speak, though he quickly recovered. At this point, he didn’t know why kept being so surprised that you thought so lowly of him.
He was not like the rest of the cruel members of the ton, he thought defiantly. And he would show you just how unlike them he was. This was the real Colin Bridgerton, not the insecure, combative version of him that seemed to slip out whenever you were near.
“A dance, Lady Montclair. I came to ask for a dance,” he said patiently, a soft smile playing on his lips.
“I beg your pardon?”
“Don’t act like you’ve got a full dance card,” he rolled his eyes. Alright, maybe he couldn’t completely shake his hostile demeanor.
"Mr. Bridgerton, that is-”
“Please.”
“Why?” came your indignant response.
“We can say we’re both doing it for Eloise if that will make you feel better,” he said, eyebrows raised.
Unsure, you turned to look at Louis beside you, who gave you an unimpressed look and gently nudged you in Colin’s direction.
“Fine,” you huffed.
He let out a breath and reached for your dance card. “Thank you.”
Suddenly, Colin became hyperaware of his surroundings. Every sensation was heightened, and it was almost too much for him to hold your hand as he led you toward the dance floor. He had never had this much physical contact with you, bar the times you had not-so-accidentally stepped on his foot, and he was struggling to maintain his composure.
Your hand felt so delicate in his, and he was actively resisting the urge to interlock your fingers with his. Where had that come from? Why was it that he could never get a grip when he was around you?
Colin was forced back to the present moment as you reached the dance floor, and he carefully set one hand on your waist and used the other to hold your hand, getting into position before the music started playing.
His stomach was in about a thousand knots, and he awkwardly shifted his hand placement, unsure about whether he was making too much physical contact with you. With the way you looked tonight, Colin would have been happy to keep his hands on you all night, but he was sure you did not share the sentiment, and the last thing he wanted was to inadvertently make you uncomfortable. If he was going to make you upset, he would much rather have done it on purpose and off the dance floor. But that’s not what Eloise has asked of him, so he settled for gingerly holding your waist, his fingers carefully touching the smooth fabric of your dress.
Much to his chagrin, Colin stumbled slightly as the music started in an attempt to begin dancing with you. This was not at all how the most charming member of the ton was supposed to act, he scolded himself, cringing. Perhaps it was a good thing you had never agreed to dance with him before this, and that he never got the chance to properly pursue you as a suitor. If merely a turn about the dance floor with you had him feeling so out of sorts, he couldn’t even imagine what kissing you must have felt like.
Except now he was imagining what kissing you would feel like. His gaze suddenly fixated on your lips, and he wondered why he had never noticed how inviting they looked. It would be so easy to simply lean down, ever so slightly, and touch his lips to yours. Perhaps it would cause a scandal, given that you were in the middle of a ball, but he rather thought it would be worth it. Just a few-
“Keep your hands to yourself, Mr. Bridgerton” your sharp voice cut through his musings.
Colin blinked, brought back to the present moment in an instant. It appeared that, in his rather improper daydream, his hold on your waist had tightened considerably. Irritation bubbled up inside of him as he softened his grip. It seemed that nothing had changed between the two of you, after all. His attempts at playing nice had been, as per usual, futile.
“I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the concept of dancing, Lady Montclair, but it necessitates at least some level of physical contact,” he snapped, glaring but still unable to look away from your lips.
Unfortunately, his words were punctuated by another stumble as he fought to stay upright and keep moving to the music, and he had to hold onto you to avoid toppling over.
“What is the matter with you?” you hissed. “Did you never learn how to dance?”
Colin looked down at you, grimacing and expecting to find the furious glare on your face he so often received. But your eyes were elsewhere. They were skittishly looking around the room, and your mouth was settling into a deeper and deeper frown.
He noticed you anxiously chewing on your lip, your hand slightly shaky in his, though you were doing well to hide it. He felt like an idiot. Of course you were uneasy. It was your first dance trying to find a new suitor, and he was making you look like a fool in the middle of the dance floor. Colin felt his own anxiety melt away, replaced by a strange protectiveness he wasn’t sure he was familiar with.
“Just look at me,” he whispered as he twirled you.
You were too anxious to do anything but follow his instructions, and your eyes shifted to him instantly. He looked concerned, and you wondered whether it was concern for you or because he had almost fallen face-first in the middle of the dance floor. Either way, you were grateful you had something to focus on that wasn’t the constant obvious stares you were getting from everyone around you.
But, as Colin twirled you once again, you made eye contact with a man you had danced with on a few occasions. Before you could smile politely, he turned away to whisper something to the person beside him, and your face fell. As you returned to face Colin, you couldn’t help but look over his shoulder to see who would be the next person to prove that you were ruined.
You felt a squeeze at your waist, and your eyes came back to Colin’s.
“They don’t matter. Pretend it’s just me and you,” he said softly, reeling you in effortlessly. “Well, perhaps your sister as well, just in case you attempt to murder me.”
You couldn’t help it, you let out a soft giggle and bit your lip to keep from bursting into laughter. And though you were still surrounded by people surely itching to see you stumble and fall, you felt the rest of the ballroom fading away. As long as you kept looking at Colin, and he kept looking at you, there was nothing that could distract you.
“I haven’t been in England that long, but I’m fairly certain murder is illegal here,” you quipped, smiling warmly at Colin for what was probably the first time.
“I’m fairly certain it’s illegal in every place I’ve been to, but I’m not so sure that would stop you,” he said back, a positively rakish smile on his face. But you were far too distracted by his mention of his travels to notice.
“You’ve traveled? Eloise hasn’t mentioned much,” you said curiously.
“I’ve mostly traveled by myself,” he explained, now completely composed, previous stress forgotten, and finding himself enjoying your company. “My family doesn’t have the same penchant for adventure as me, so I usually set off on my own.”
You hummed thoughtfully. This, you hadn’t expected. Now you knew that you and Colin shared a love for travel, and it was a very unpleasant feeling, indeed. You had spent so long trying to distance yourself from him, and it was slightly disconcerting to know that the two of you had something in common. Especially something so embedded in who you were.
“Where was the last place you went to?”
“Greece,” he answered, smiling down at you. “I came back just before the season started. My mother was quite upset with me when she saw my tan.”
You laughed, perfectly picturing Violet’s hand over her chest as she saw her son after spending weeks in the sun. “You’re mad! If I had your kind of freedom, I certainly would not have stayed in England for as long as you have. Why haven’t you left since?”
“I- I’m not sure,” Colin answered. Why had he stayed so long? Usually, he liked to travel during the summer months, but he had stayed put so far and had no upcoming travel plans. “I suppose I am enjoying the season this year.” Was he really, though?
But you had already moved on to your next question. “The language is quite challenging, no? Did you learn at all? How long were you in Greece?”
Colin could have kissed you then and there. His family rarely showed interest in his travels, seldom responding to his letters, and once back in the ton, no one else bothered to inquire about his time abroad. Thus, he found himself pleasantly surprised by your curiosity, even if it was you—of all people—who displayed it.
As your conversation unfolded, Colin realized he was thoroughly enjoying himself. The effortless banter, combined with the tingling sensation that coursed through him whenever your hand grazed his neck, made him feel as though he were soaring high above the ballroom floor.
What if you had said yes that night at the Danbury ball? What if you had accepted his invitation to dance? Would it have felt as remarkable, as natural as this moment? Or was the allure of having you in his arms heightened simply because you had already rejected him?
Colin supposed he might have fallen for you that very night at the Danbury ball, had the circumstances been different. He could have seen himself, in a fit of romantic fervor, asking for your hand in marriage mere days afterward. Perhaps, then, it was lucky that you seemed to have an instant disdain for him. It likely spared him from acting the fool. Though truth be told, he often found himself behaving quite foolishly in your presence regardless.
As the dance ended, Colin found himself yearning to continue speaking with you. He grabbed your hand in his, feeling much more composed this time, and led you away from the dance floor. But he barely had time to turn back around to face you and continue your conversation before a trio of suitors came up and asked you to dance. Before he knew it, you were being swept away once more, this time on the arm of someone else.
Colin congratulated himself on a job well done as he made his way back to where Eloise stood, deftly declining a gentleman's offer to dance. It was a triumph, he thought, that Colin had gone more than five minutes without arguing with you, and you had even laughed at something he said! It felt far better than whatever hostile rapport the two of you usually had.
“Thank you,” Eloise smiled gratefully at her brother. “Now, was that so difficult?” she added in a teasing tone.
“I will have you know that yes, it was,” answered Colin stubbornly, but he knew he was lying even before the words came out of his mouth. Gliding across the dance floor with you in his arms had felt like the most natural thing in the world.
Even now, as you twirled gracefully in the arms of another, Colin found himself not seething with jealousy as he might have expected, but rather in a state of awe. There was something enchanting about the sight of you, and he couldn't tear his gaze away.
Then, unexpectedly, your eyes met his over the shoulder of your current dance partner, and you bestowed upon him a heart-stopping smile, silently mouthing a 'thank you'. Colin had to feign a cough to cover up the giggle he had just let out. A giggle? From Colin Bridgerton, certified rake? What on Earth were you doing to him?

Summary: Penelope tries her effort into turning Colin's eye to her. Realization hits you as you have a hunch of who the writer of Lady Whistledown is. Bad blood brewing between sisters.  [ part 1 & part 2 & part 4 ]
Tumblr media
You had excused yourself from Colin, heading back inside. Where the warmth wrapped around you like a blanket. The loud muttering deafening out your clear hearing. A pair of dancers almost knocked you over when you rushed by. Coming to the window, where you had spotted your sister, she was gone. The spot empty. Looking around suspiciously, you wanted to know where she had gone too. Some bystanders glanced your way, whispering as you ignored them.
You could care less about them. Getting on the tips of your toes, you tried to overlook a few high heads. With your sister’s new wardrobe it wasn’t easy to spot her. Her bright colours exchanged for more plain colours. Blending more easily with the others. Turning your head, your eyes widened brief seeing that Colin had returned inside.
Looking searchingly around as well. You dropped your feet flat on the ground, lowering in height. Ducking a bit, you didn’t want Colin to find you. Some lords pulled their noses up at your curious and suspicious behaviour. Finding your way to the crowd lowered as if you were looking for a lost earing.
Lifting your head a bit, you came in contact with Benedict Bridgerton. He sat down, mouth half stuffed with a sweet, the half bitten part in his hand. You smiled sheepishly at him. Benedict moved his free hand to the side, pointing. You followed his point seeing him point at your mama. You thanked him with a nervous smile.
Straightening your back a bit, you walked off casually. Benedict quirking his eyebrow up at your strange, but funny acting. You pretended to make your way over to mama, till you hopped aside, disappearing into the crowd. Where ever could she be? Looking left and right. Then your eyes locked. Pinpointing her.
She stood by the walls, her dance card dangling down her wrist. Her gaze was focused elsewhere. Not far from her stood a group of ladies. Chattering away. Your sister tilting her head a bit, as if being able to hear better. Her expression emotionless. Silently you made a big turn around to reach her out of surprise.
You reached the walls, practically glueing yourself to it. Your reputation was already ruined by gossip, so you could care less for your mischievous acts. Quietly you approached her. Coming to stand beside till she noticed the company that had joined her. She glanced at you. – “Are you not dancing sister?” – you asked gesturing at the dancers. Penelope kept looking in front of her. – “I am trying not to draw any attention to myself.” – she replied. – “I saw you with Colin earlier.” – she added leaning a bit to you.
You clasped your hands together below, leaning a bit forwards. – “What a keen observation sister.” – you answered with a hint of sarcasm. You caught her looking, smiling intentionally at her. Penelope smiled back at you. In silence you both stood, looking away from each other. For the first time in forever it felt awkward standing with your sister. As if being near a stranger. You became aware of some curious eyes once more.
Seeing their heads come together to whisper and gossip. Ladies and lords probably discussing your purity. It hurt. Seeing the entire ton be against you, but perhaps you deserved it. After all you did kiss Colin. Not your intended, not your fiancé and certainly not your husband. Despite all the lies and the hurt, a part of you deserved it. Deserved to be judged like that.
“Best not to draw attention to yourself.” – Penelope spoke softly. It made you widen your eyes at her. Turning around, you left feeling already judged too much. You returned to mama, waiting there till the dreadful ball was over. The carriage ride back home was horrible. Your mother sighing loud as she undid one of her pins from her hair. – “This is a nightmare.” – she called out.
“I’ll have to marry my daughters off to farmers at the rate of this. Congratulations daughters, you better get used to the life of work.” – she said sarcastic. Phillipa busted out in tears, leaning her head against Prudence’s shoulder. She sighed again. – “I had such high hopes for you Y/n. Guess I overrated you.” – she turned to look outside.
Her comment made you lower your head, letting your hands slip in the folds of your skirt. The carriage hobbled on the cobble stone as it rode into your street. Mama got out first, your sisters following. You got out last, feeling miserable as hell. You immediately went to your room, crying on your bed.
Penelope lifted her head up as the door to the Parlor opened. Colin Bridgerton entering. – “Colin.” – Penelope spoke getting up. Colin bowed to her, before approaching him. – “To what do we owe the pleasure?” – she let out with curiosity. –“Are… are you here alone?” – he asked. Penelope let out a soft ‘yes’. – “Would you like some tea?” – she offered, gesturing at the small table. Colin nodded. Penelope poured him some tea, handing him the cup.
Colin took a sip as Penelope was staring at him. It made Colin furrow his brows. – “What is it Pen?” – he asked almost humorously. – “Nothing.” – she responded mesmerized back.  It made Colin set the cup down with a sheepish chuckle. – “It is just…” – she started catching his attention. – “Your eyes…” – she began. – “A remarkable shade of blue.” – Gazing wondrously at him.
Colin stared back at her, caught up in her words. The front door opened as you entered alone. You walked past the Parlor, hearing your sister’s voice. – “and yet somehow they shine even brighter when you are kind.” – you heard her speak. Curious as to who your sister was speaking, you cautiously opened the door a smidge. Enough for you to look into the room, with one eye. Your eyes widening seeing her stand with Colin Bridgerton.
Colin cleared his throat, drinking his tea as if parched. You backed away from the door in stunned. Slowly figuring it out, you made your way over to the stairs. Stomping loudly as your presence was known now. Penelope turned around in shock. Colin with a quizzable brow. He moved forward, thinking perhaps an intruder had come to the house. Penelope’s eyes shifting thoughtfully, narrowing her eyes slightly.
Upstairs you rushed to your sister’s room. Swinging the door open as you didn’t bother to close it. Immediately you went towards her desk. Pulling the drawers open. Searching vigorously through the papers. Some flew out of the drawer from your force. On her desk stood a little box as you opened it, ruffling with your hand in it. Nothing. You went towards her dresser, searching through her clothing.
Nothing. The covers got pulled back from her bed. Nothing, not even under the bed. For a moment, you felt impatient. Biting your finger a bit. Till your eyes fell upon something else. You crossed the room, hearing a plank creek. It made you pause. Putting more pressure on it, to hear the difference. It creaked more.
Kneeling down you let your fingers brush over the wooden edges. Till you felt that you could lift the plank a bit up. Eyes widening, you pulled the plank up. Almost aggressively you forced your hands down to the wooden box and papers. Reading head line after head line. Dearest gentile reader. Dearest gentile reader. Dearest gentile reader. Throwing a few pages around you, you couldn’t stop reading them. All editions of Lady Whistledown you had read before.
The realization hitting you. The one who wrote such filth about you, was closer than you thought. Your own dearest sister. Quiet wallflower Penelope Featherington. Shy as a mouse, but loud with a mighty pen. In shock, you got up, holding numerous pages of filth. There were rushed footsteps on the stairs. Penelope barging into the room as she bumped against the doorframe, panting.
Her eyes widened at the sight of you with her papers. You slowly looked up to her, holding the numerous papers up. – “You… you did this…” – you said still trying to process your discovery. – “I can explain.” – she started coming closer.  – “Filth after filth!” – You started throwing pages at her. Penelope got started as some pages flew against her.
“You wrote about me!” – you screamed out throwing the last of pages at her. Bending down, you picked up a few more. – “Does this satisfy you sister!” – waving the pages at her. – “I saw you with Colin!” – Penelope called out full of emotion. It made you throw the pages at her out of anger. – “So you decided to write lies about me!” – you yelled at her. – “You know I like Colin!” – Penelope answered justifying her acts. It made you scream in agony. – “If you just stayed away from him, I wouldn’t have to write about you!” – Penelope made clear.
Pacing around, you felt yourself get emotional. Lip trembling as you tried your best not to cry. – “You are the devil!” – you cried out with tears in your eyes. Penelope swallowed, finally cracking to her own emotions. – “It was only meant to teach you a lesson.” – she said. – “Is that what you were doing?!” – you shouted at her. – “By writing about me in your latest sheet! By telling the entire world about things I entrusted you with?” – you finished with anger.
“It was the only way I could convince you to leave Colin alone.” – she responded with emotion in her voice.  You took a step forward to her, wiping your cheek clean. Your expression turning cold. – “The only person you were interested in glorifying was yourself!”
Penelope briefly looked away. – “I do not even know you.” – you said to her taking a step back from her. You turned away from her, wiping more tears away that kept coming. Penelope’s expression changed with anger. – “All you ever do is talk about your sisters!” – Penelope called out in frustration. – “You’ve all these dreams and ambitions, but I am the one who did something great, and you cannot stand it!” – She yelled out.
You returned to your sister, inhaling deep. – “I wish to never see or speak to you again.” – you told her coldly. You went towards the door till you stopped, finger thoughtfully against your lips. – “I wouldn’t put your hopes on Colin, Pen.” – you said to her. – “He’s not interested in you.” – you let her know, wanting to have the final blow.
Your words cut like a knife through her heart, making her gasp soft. You left her room, crying your eyes out. Penelope grabbed a pillow and threw it in agony at the wall. Rushing down the stairs, you didn’t expect Colin to still be here. – “Y/n?” – he said with concern at the foot of the stairs. With a trembling lip, you walked over to him, wrapping your arms around him.
Colin got startled for a second. – “What is wrong Y/n?” – he asked, moving his arms around you. You only wrapped your arms tighter around him, wanting him to comfort you. Colin hugged you better, stroking your back. Penelope had come into sight, standing at the railing of the stairway, looking down at Colin and you. You curled up a smile, knowing your sister was watching.
You moved a bit back in the hug as Colin saw the tears on your face. He touched your chin, concerned for you. – “What happened Y/n? Who hurt you?” – he wanted to know. You simply turned your head, looking at your sister up on the second floor. Colin looked past you to her as well. Penelope gripped onto the railing, staring bitter down. – “Pen?” – Colin asked you confused.

first time, benedict is very much in love, masturbation, ben is a little shit but reader is even worse
just lovers (b.b)
Tumblr media
you've finally married your best friend. now just for the wedding night.
a smirk on his face, he grasped your left, and kissed right over your ring finger.
‘i shall see you tomorrow morning, then, my lady?’
you scoffed internally. just friends? what a fucking idiot.
───✱*.。:。✱*.:。✧*.。✰*.:。✧*.。:。*.。✱ ───
benedict admitting his feelings was, arguably, the best thing that had ever happened to you. within days of your mutual admission, the two of you were courting, and after a month he had already asked you to marry him. many in the ton whispered about your rushed wedding; you had gone from eligible to betrothed in weeks, and women everywhere were desperate to know exactly what had gone on between the two of you.
little did they know that what happened between the two of you was all you thought about.
in the lead up to your wedding day, benedict was all that was on your mind. you were looking forward to all of it; the domesticity of life as a married woman, waking up to the man you love every morning, having beautiful children. all you wanted was the bliss you saw on daphne’s face every time she looked at her husband, the love you knew that violet still felt for her deceased husband, and the playful romance that you had watched brew between anthony and kate at benedict’s side.
most of all, however, what you fantasied about was what could have happened had you and benedict been left alone that night. when your best friend had explained to you how a woman comes to be with child, he had explained that it started with kissing and progressed until the man… entered the woman. you knew nothing more other than that your mama would explain it to you the night before, and by god did you itch to know what you and benedict were to do. if you had known all those years before that it would be him with which you would do the act, you might have told him you were a visual learner.
───
smoothing your nightgown over your thighs, you waited in anticipation for your mother to begin speaking. you hadn’t slept correctly in days, and right now, less than twelve hours before you were to be married, you felt almost sick with excitement and nerves. taking your hand in her own, your mother finally spoke.
‘as you are to marry, it is my duty to explain to you what will happen. you will lie in bed together at the end of the night, and he will touch you between your legs. then, he will enter you with himself, and it will hurt, but eventually you may enjoy it and come to bear children.’ you looked at your mother in shock. yes, you had an idea of what was to come, and certainly more of one than most girls your age, but you had no idea it was to hurt, or that you might enjoy it. for a long time after your mama kissed you goodnight, you led facing the ceiling, wishing you could skip all of this and finally be benedict’s wife.
───
finally, finally the guests had left, left you and your husband alone. husband. you rolled the word around in your mouth, and as you followed benedict up to what was once his bedroom but had now become yours, it was all you could think to say to him.
‘husband, benedict. you’re my husband. we’re married.’ he stopped in front of the doors to his chambers, gazing down at you with an almost wistful expression, stroking your cheek ever so gently before leaning down to press a kiss to your lips.
‘and you are my wife, now and always.’
he pushed the doors open and you were in his room, alone. it wasn’t the first time, but this time there was no anthony coming to dismiss you for taking too long, no propped open door as you conversed and maybe, looking back on it now, flirted with one another. you’d been in this room a million times; you had helped him paint the walls, embroidered with your feet tucked underneath you on his bed, even slept in here once when benedict had insisted on taking the guest room when your carriage had broken down overnight. he told you many years later that he hadn’t changed the pillow you slept on for weeks, until the scent of your shampoo had all but vanished and he could no longer pretend you were sleeping next to him. but for now, you were mr and mrs benedict bridgerton, newlywed and glowing, and you had each other and that was enough.
he leant down to kiss you once more, cradling your jaw in his large hand but this time he tasted different, tasted of heat and desperation and lust, just like he had that night on the terrace. but this time there were no interfering mamas, no colin on watch, and you could do whatever you wanted to him. so you did. you started with his chest, one that you caught yourself looking at more often than you’d even admit to yourself. you undid the buttons one by one, admiring each new exposed inch of toned flesh and the look of innocent wonder on your face had benedict pulling himself back together before he let you take him apart. you pressed soft lips to his sternum and he shrugged his shirt off, strong arms now open to your gaze and it was almost too much. you kissed from his left bicep down to his elbow, nosing into his scent as your lips trailed down down down to his hand, where you kissed over the ring that now adorned it, smirking up at him much like he had not a month ago. he laughed down at you with his favourite lopsided smile, like he always had, and suddenly it hit you. it had never been any different; the two of you had always been destined to be here, right now in this moment, and the intensity of it left you drunk. you had read a play once, and he called it… what was it… star-crossed. and if any two people had been forged from the same star, it was the two of you.
you led benedict to the bed, sitting down with your hands on your lap as he stood above you shirtless.
‘you know, darling, as gorgeous as you look in that dress, it’s not quite fair that i’m half naked and you’re still trussed up.’ you pulled a silly face at your husband’s joking, and soon resolved that you’d show him. you might have… forgotten to wear undergarments on your top half, and when you stood up and dropped your dress, benedict’s jaw also seemed to have had some assistance from gravity.
‘cat got your to- oh!’
your humorous chastising of his staring turned into a noise you’d never heard as he sat on the bed and slotted a thigh between your legs and, placing his hands on your hips, ground you down onto it. bare chests pushed together, benedict supported all of your weight as he pressed you against him, humming triumphantly at the gasps that left your soft lips. even through your hazed pleasure, you could tell that benedict thought he had the upper hand. and that would not do.
‘f-feels good, benedict. feels like when-when i-i touch myselff,’ you moaned, writhing against him as his movements against you stuttered against you and then stopped, looking down at you with an expression like you’d told him you had two heads.
‘what did you just say?’ he demanded, a steely look in his eye as his jaw clenched. you could feel the same hard thing from that night only two months ago, and you resolved to ask him what it was once you had finished concentrating on bucking your hips, desperate for friction.
‘that night, the night we k-kissed,’ you murmured, looking into his eyes. ‘i felt… funny, between my l-legs, and i remember how you said that’s how we have babies, y’know?’ you looked up at him again, almost as if repenting and excusing your actions. ‘so i wanted to know what it was. so i t-touched it.’
benedict felt like he might start to cry. his innocent little wife, corrupted before he’d even had the chance to show her all the ways in which a woman can be pleased, and by his own hand. he could have cum right on the spot. instead, he resolved to find out further. gripping your chin, he forced you to make eye contact again, and your furtive gaze made him want to kiss you all over.
‘did it feel good?’
you were desperate by now, rubbing yourself about him, and you reached for his hip. instead, you found something long and hard, and benedict found himself making noises much like the ones you were currently emitting.
‘it did. does this?’ you enquired, toying with him from outside his pants, leaving him a squirming mess. ‘my lord, may i ask? i felt this that night, pressing against me, between my legs. what…’ you trailed off, which benedict took as his cue to continue.
‘my love, it is how i enter you. to have sex.’
sex. it was a new word, and your hips stilled as you contemplated the implications.
‘and is sex how you have babies?’ he let out a breathy chuckle and you hit his arm gently, frowning.
‘my darling, it can be a great many things.’ benedict trailed a hand down from your shoulder to your nipple, tweaking it and smirking at your cry of surprise. ‘it can be fun. it can be done on your own, like you did to yourself, you dirty girl.’ you blushed at his words. ‘it doesn’t have to make a baby. that only happens when i cum. do you know what that means, my love? did you make yourself cum?’
you shook your head. ‘i don’t think so. i did it until i started to feel weird, and then i stopped.’
‘it can be wonderful, my love. do you want me to show you?’
you nodded, and that was all he needed.
rising from the bed, benedict picked you up and then laid you down atop his bed, covering your frame with his own. placing a kiss to your sternum much like you had done to him, he kissed his way down until he was at the last piece of clothing you had on, a pair of blue underwear. daphne had handed it to you that morning, whispering something about tradition, and you had gracefully accepted. when you looked down to see benedict dragging them down with his teeth, you made a mental note to send daphne flowers. expensive ones. before you could process being naked in front of him, benedict’s tongue was in a place that your own hands had only briefly explored, and your hands shot to his messy hair as you writhed against his tongue. strong arms came up to pin your hips to the bed, and you could feel him making shapes against you with his mouth. you concentrated hard, and stars exploded behind your eyes as you worked it out; benedict bridgerton, branded by his very own tongue against his very own wife. despite his arms covering your waist, you bucked up against the intensity of his touch, and once he slid a finger inside you you were done for. you babbled cries of his name as your stomach exploded, toes curling and knees pressing either side of benedict’s head as he licked and sucked all the way through your orgasm, his hands clutching your knees as you shivered.
he worked his way up your body, pressing kisses to the inside of your knee, the dip of your hip and the peak of your ribcage before finally your sweaty forehead, looking at you with such love in your eyes it would have scared you if anyone else looked at you that way. not your benedict, however. you felt nothing but wanted.
‘did that feel good?’ you rolled your eyes once more, before rubbing a hand down his front to his pants, where you could feel him, achingly hard in your palm.
‘i want to make you feel that good, my love, please.’
it was an offer he could hardly say no to.
he was soon stripped naked much as yourself, and nothing could have prepared you for what he looked like under his clothes. his cock, as he told you it was called, was throbbing between his legs, long and hard and pointing upright, begging to be touched. when you reached for it, however, benedict brushed your hand aside, making you pout up at him. all you wanted was to explore every inch of your body much like he had yours.
‘there’s plenty of time for that, my dove. years. but right now, i might explode if i can’t get within you right this second.’ you would have been worried about it fitting in you - it was quite large, and you knew you were quite small down there. you knew, however, that benedict would never harm you intentionally, and so you led back, your husband quickly following and covering your body with his own. benedict grasped your left hand, using his other to guide himself to you.
‘i love you so much, mrs bridgerton.’
‘i love you too, ben.’
and with that he pushed into you. the sting was overwhelming for a moment, and you had to grit your teeth to stop the cry that threatened to push its way from your mouth. benedict mouthed over your face, kissing away tears that you didn’t know had fallen, and apologised over and over for hurting you. it was taking every muscle in his body to restrain himself from pushing into you and fucking you silly. it was, after all, all he’d thought about since he was a teenager, and even despite all of his experience with other women, he felt like a nervous virgin all over again, eager to please.
‘i’m okay ben, truly. you can move,’ you smiled up at him after a moment, and he brushed a lock of hair behind your ear before sealing your lips in a loving kiss and pulling his hips back before pushing them forwards once more. the burn, whilst not completely gone, had dissolved from something uncomfortable into something more welcome, and a moan erupted from your mouth as you gripped his shoulders.
‘so this is why mothers don’t tell their daughters about it,’ you gasped to your husband, who looked down at you quizzically. ‘if my mother told me it would be this good, i would have been having sex with you for a very long time.’
benedict groaned and dropped his head into your chest, biting gently at your breasts as is thrusts got harder and harder.
‘my love, i’m not going to last very long. i-i can’t stop myself.’
you stroked his back lovingly, kissing his shoulder and the top of his head as he looked down into the place where your bodies joined, speaking sweetly.
‘it’s alright, my lord, let go, finish inside me.’
and with that, benedict was done. he’d imagined for years how you might say those words, the inflection of your voice, the way your voice would go high-pitched and breathy and here you were, beneath him and begging him to cum inside you and he was finished, pushing deep into you and letting go with a grunt of your name before withdrawing and lying beside you.
you looked down at your hands, which were still intertwined, and led basking in your newfound marital bliss. it was benedict who ruined the silence for you, turning on his side with a cheeky grin plastered on his face once more.
‘so, tell me again about how you touch yourself when you think of me?’

“Fine, she’s behind me.”
“What?”
Y/N poked her head out,
“Hi.”
Tumblr media
“Eloise please leave.”
“No way, brother.” She stood there with her arms crossed,
“Eloise,” Y/N grabbed her shoulder, “I’ll be back soon ok? Let me just talk to him.”
Eloise nodded, and left to resume her conversation with Penelope.
Y/N just stared at Colin and shrugged,
“So? What do you want to tell me?”
“I wanted to apologise. It was unwise of me to imply that you won’t do well on the marriage market.”
Y/N let out a unladylike snort, before covering her mouth,
“You could definitely say that Colin.”
She paused, as if in thought, then turned back to face him,
“I wouldn’t have cared if the comment came from an ancient, balding lord. But it hurt because you said that Colin, you know how worried I was about me being able to attain a respectable husband. And your comment was like a dagger to my heart. And for your information, I could easily get a husband, but I’ve been holding myself back for someone, who I now see doesn’t deserve me.”
As she said this she took a step closer and closer to Colin, who simply stared at her with a dumbfounded look on his face.
“Who did you hold yourself back for?”
“You, Colin.”
“How could I hold you back? What do you- Oh.”
“Yeah Colin. I’ve waited, and waited. And every time you spoke about some other charming debutant you broke my heart. But then you would be so charming to me, touch my arm for slightly too long, and that would give me a glimmer of hope. Hope that maybe you felt the same way. And this cycle continued, and it broke me every time.”
As she finished her rant, she let out a shaky breath. She turned to walk out of the secluded area of the garden, but Colin lurched forward and grabbed her upper arm,
“Y/N wait-“
She screwed her arm out of his loose grip,
“Colin no, you can’t fix this now. You’re engaged now, remember?”
She stared at him, with a hint of fury and- a sense of hatred? As Colin opened his mouth, she spoke again,
“People warned me about you Colin. I didn’t listen and I allowed myself to be stuck in your trap. God, I wish I did listen…”
She walked out of the secluded area, leaving Colin stood there, shoulders slumped and a defeated look on his face. He wished she would look back but she didn’t. How he yearned to tell her he felt the same…
He felt a pat on the back and looked down, it was Eloise,
“Let’s get you a drink brother, you look like you need one.” He allowed himself to be pulled by her to the drinks table.

Sickness and Siblings.
paring: Bridgerton siblings x sister! reader
warnings: Nothing really, perhaps my Regency-era writing style?

words: 1.1k
a/n: In my opinion, your name would start with 'H' to match with Hyacinth. However, this is not my oc fiction, I used 'Y/n', imagine your favorite name with 'H' or not, it's up to you ❛ ֊ ❛

Being bedridden was more tiring than actually being ill for Miss Y/n Bridgerton—Doctor's orders, after all. And she despised every moment of it. It was just a few sneezes, a cold, but the doctor was being dramatic and unnecessary. She should be out playing with Hyacinth and Gregory or following around her brothers as she found that more entertaining. She huffed.
Violet cast a sad look at her youngest daughter, who was begrudgingly lying down on the bed. Hovering over Daphne to get her a suitor, mentally preparing Eloise next, keeping an eye on the kids, the last thing she needed was convincing her youngest daughter to take her medicine as per the doctor's instructions—a tiring sigh escaped her lips, not unnoticed by Y/n.
"You need not worry, mama. Why can't I leave the bed already? I feel alright"
"Dearest, you know why" the bed dipped slightly as she moved to pat Y/n's head. She loved Y/n, very dearly, but she needed to help Daphne get in the good graces of the Queen herself. The above-mentioned sister visited Y/n in the early morning to check on her, just for a moment before leaving to prepare for her visit to the Queen.
"The faster you drink it, the faster you get better, my darling" Violet was in hurry, yet Y/n was having none of it.
"It's too bitter!" she protested. The cough syrup was not her favorite at all.
Not too soon, Anthony barged into her room, "Daphne needs you, mother". He did not waste a single second. A wrinkle formed on his forehead and a frown on his lips.
"But Y/n needs my care now-
"I'll take care of my dear sister" he gave Y/n a knowing look, abruptly cutting off his mother. He was completely aware of his sister's antics when she got sick.
A kiss to her head and casting an apologetic glance, Violet bid her daughter goodbye, leaving her in the care of her eldest son to see Daphne.
"Now, Y/n, be a good girl and drink your syrup" he tried coaxing her.
"I do not wish to" she defied him, getting annoyed by the passing second, eliciting a glare from Anthony.
"I'm serious, take your cold medicine, Y/n or i will forcibly shove it down your throat. Do not test me, you know i will" he said sternly.
"If you keep looking at me like that, your wrinkles are going to permanently etch on your forehead forever, brother" she giggled at her own jest. Her smile vanished slowly, she sunk the bed a little, pulling the blanket up to her nose when the grim expression on his face did not change one bit. Perhaps, she crossed a line?
Things were truly hectic in the Bridgerton manor for the past few weeks. She could spend a few minutes with each of her brothers and sisters if she was lucky. And Anthony definitely had even more responsibility as the Viscount and carefully hovering over Daphne like a Hawk. And lately, he had been looking more stressed than ever and little Y/n wondered if she did, in fact, angered her brother by her playful comment.
"Is that so?" he walked towards her. His expression softened subtly at her reaction. Did his sister really think he was angry at her?
Anthony Bridgerton would never admit that he quite enjoyed his sister's antics and playfulness. He was the father figure she had known all her life, just like Hyacinth and Gregory.
His mind wandered to the time when she was just a toddler— an energetic, curious one at that, he blissfully reminisced at the memories, how she would follow him around all over the manor, trying to mimic him adorably. While Hyacinth clung to their mother more often, Y/n easily preferred playing with her brothers more, especially Colin. A small smile graced his face at the fond memory, replacing his frown. If he could, he would trap her at that time.
He was thankful for her playfulness. It reminded him that she was still his kid sister, still his baby and there was no hurry in finding her a suitor soon. If it was upto him, he would never marry his baby sister off.
Thought of Daphne crossed his mind, pulling him back to the present.
Watching his expression ease into a smile made Y/n relax and more comfortable.
"You are going to regret making that remark, sister"
"What-"
Her words were cut off. Fits of giggles escaped her lips as his fingers tickled her neck and sides.
"I apologize! I apologize!" Y/n squealed in delight, laughing and clutching her belly.
"That's better" he ceased tickling her. A wide grin plastered on his face, matching hers.
After serious convincing and coaxing, she agreed to drink the bitter syrup after a bribe was promised to her by her brother—a pair of new shoes and a copy of a new book by her favorite author.
"Brother, will you stay with me today? I'm feeling already bored" she pulled up her blanket, looking at him hopefully.
He looked apologetic. "I can't, today, Y/n-"
"It's alright" she lied. she tried to give him a genuine smile. Staying in bed all day is one thing, but to be alone was even worse. But she understood how busy everyone would be.
Sooner, the door to her room was flung wide open, followed by sounds of matching footsteps of Hyacinth and Gregory. Benedict, Colin, and Eloise followed them next.
"There she is! sick little monkey"
How Y/n got that nickname is a story for another time.
She stuck her tongue out at Colin at that comment.
Anthony smiled. She was definitely still his kid sister.
"Do not tell mother" Benedict placed a box of chocolates on her lap.
Y/n gasped, "You are my favorite brother!". She hugged Benedict sideways, still sitting on the bed. He put his arms around her neck, hugging her back.
"You wound me, sister" Colin feigned hurt, clutching his heart, making her chuckle.
"I jest, you are all my favorite" she admitted honestly, looking at all her brothers. Gregory reached for the chocolates on her lap. "Maybe except you" she grinned.
"Are those my chocolates?" Eloise moved closer to inspect the box.
"They are mine now"
"We can share!" Hyacinth announced.
As much as Anthony had to leave, he was glad his siblings would keep Y/n company.
Laughter and playful banters filled the air as the siblings settled around Y/n and on her bed, now sharing the chocolates and keeping her company throughout the day.
Hyacinth and Gregory told her all the plans and games they would play after she recovers.
Eloise told her theory of Lady Whistledown vaguely until Y/n got bored.
Benedict patiently and gladly listened to Y/n, snuggling her, while she rambled on about whatever came to her mind.
Even Colin offered to read her one of her favorite books.
"Can you read this chapter again?"
"Again?" he inquired.
"Yes, please"
How could Colin resist that face? And so he did, till she fell asleep.
And Daphne played Y/n's favorite song for her on the piano in the evening.
Y/n was, after all, their darling sister. And she loved them dearly and was grateful to have them.
