Pernice Brothers Interview: Writing to Live
Tumblr media
Joe Pernice; Photo by Colleen Nicholson
BY JORDAN MAINZER
The album cover for Who Will You Believe (New West), the first album in 5 years from Pernice Brothers, features a close-up photo of a man who doesn't "care about being seen." That man, of course, is Joe Pernice, who formed Pernice Brothers over 25 years ago after the breakup of his beloved alt country institution Scud Mountain Boys. But while Pernice may be indifferent-to-averse to the idea of celebrity or even public persona, he's not trying to remain hidden, per se. The photo that graces the cover doesn't attempt to be flattering, nor a clean-cut design: It asymmetrically cuts off the brim and top of his hat, his right glasses lens frame, the bottom of his chin, and the back of his head. (Of course, the band name and album title is superimposed on his face.) It makes you pay more attention to Pernice than you otherwise would. What is he looking at? Why? In a way, it really fits Who Will You Believe, a record that exists on a separate plane from today's singer-songwriter albums that tend to be straight diary entries combined with biography or filled with Easter eggs and callbacks. Instead, Pernice, an accomplished writer in many different mediums, shows that he can write about almost anything. The possibilities are infinite.
When I spoke to Pernice over the phone earlier this month, he let me know that he was in the middle of a particularly fruitful period. "I've been writing more songs than I ever have in my life," he said. "I go through these periods where I have a manic blast." Indeed, whether or not Who Will You Believe was born from one of these spurts, the album gives you a sense for how he works. Neko Case duet "I Don't Need That Anymore" started with an off-hand remark his mom made about having a good figure when she "needed it;" Pernice took the line and turned it into a devastating country track about a dying love, replete with twangy, chiming guitars, string swells and steady mallet percussion. He processes the deaths of three important people--his cousin, Rhino executive Gary Stewart, and David Berman--in stunning strummer "The Purple Rain", referencing the last one not with cutesy lyrical winks and nods but ones that even casual Silver Jews/Purple Mountains listeners will pick up, respectfully showing his intentions to pay tribute. Of course, Pernice still finds room for ambiguity, clever wordplay, and fun atop it all, a true songwriter's songwriter. His penchant for cultural allusions remains strong, even in conversation. Referring to a recent day where he wrote 5 songs in a day, 3 of them keepers, Pernice said, " I felt like Sylvia Plath at the end of her life when he was in a manic state of making shit," before clarifying, deadpan, "That was before she put her head in the oven."
Tumblr media
Sure, there are some tracks on Who Will You Believe that are purely sad or strange. Pernice croons on the slow "What We Had", atop acoustic guitars, tremolo electric plucking, and tambourine, "It's a comedy of errors, but it's sad / I think of what we had / It's hard to watch good love go bad." Instrumental waltz "A Song for Sir Robert Helpmann", meanwhile, juxtaposes strings, keys, drum rolls, and wordless vocalization, creepy and lurking. Its mood is inspired by Pernice's fear of Helpmann's role as The Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. "That movie scared the shit out of me when I was a kid," he said. "[Helpmann's] absolutely terrifying." Though these tunes occupy a singular mood, though, for the most part, Who Will You Believe is a fun album, Pernice's brightest and loosest sounding in years. "I always play with people who are good people. I've never made a record with an asshole," Pernice said. "When you get really good players who aren't just phoning it in, it's really cool." Past collaborators pervade the album, such as Joe's brother Bob and wife Laura Stein (formerly of Halifax indie pop band Jale). Toronto-based choral group Choir! Choir! Choir! help Pernice give his eulogies on "The Purple Rain", ending the album on an uplifting note. And his pop sensibilities, Beatles, Bowie, and Bacharach influences shine on "Not This Pig" and "A Man of Means", songs with baroque breakdowns and bouncy drum fills.
Ultimately, Pernice is one of those songwriters who views music as a satisfying puzzle. Though he writes all of his songs on acoustic guitar, theoretically making them easy to play solo live, the tunes undoubtedly shapeshift as he records them. He describes a song like "Hey, Guitar" as "a balls-out, heavy tune"--it's got massive electric licks layered atop jangly strumming and shiny keys, and ripping distorted squalling between verses, fading in and out at the end like an AM radio hit. "I don't think [it] will translate [live]," he said. "[But] you don't know whether [it's gonna be a train wreck] until you do it. Every song was a new song the first time." You can bet he's looking forward to figuring it out, one of the most thrilling parts of music to him. After all, it's only now he's just beginning to dive into an almost 20-year-old song, "Say Goodnight to the Lady" from 2005's Discover A Lovelier You. "I've been working on it lately, and it's started to feel like my song."

I knew that Pernice had written at least "The Purple Rain" as part of a mourning process, but reading about the context behind Who Will You Believe, I tried to see if I could construct something more broad. Before writing the record, his son retired from playing high-level youth baseball, which Pernice coached, and Pernice went from being on a baseball diamond most of the week for over half of the year, to not being on one at all. As such, I asked him whether songwriting is a way for him to generally process any sort of life change. As it turns out, it's much more. "I write songs so I can manage to function," he said. "It's just a necessary thing for my well-being. It could be anything. The act of doing it is the thing that makes me feel good and not crazy. A lot of times, the subject might not even be all that important in that regard." And so I thought back about the album cover, wondering what Pernice was gazing at during the photoshoot, realizing that, too, doesn't matter. What he feels about songwriting is the way I feel about listening. Both of us--all of us--are just trying to take in the world as best as we can.

Alice Audrey Farr, born Mosman, Sydney, New South Wales, on August 1, 1956.īEATRIX. This book is dedicated to those who helped me write it.ĪRACHNE. The I becomes an alphabet, the my becomes ours. Thus my ideas weigh with those of others. I absorbed it all with gratitude and worked with a discipline and strength I felt I owed them. Throughout the many drafts, I had readers, arguers, encouragers, critics and researchers who worked for the book, the idea, their own reasons, with implicit faith in my purpose to uncover a truth to tell the truth and not resort to a gossipy theft of their ideas and their lives. The merging of the diagrammatic and chaotic was a poem. It is dependent on inspiration, excitement, the tides of language and having the time. That was to ensure a symphonic and historic depth.
#HUNTING LESSON ROSE TAIPAN SERIES#
The first draft was a series of diagrams, and nouns. The daring to make a novel from geometry was possible in the rarified air of a ‘sinecure’. Christina Stead had given me two clues with her mention of maths and ‘no men in it at all’. ‘Everywoman’ was women the singular does not compute when one investigates the nature of the feminine.Ī worker, no longer a taxi-driver, now a writer with an office and a title, albeit for ten weeks, my job, then, was to put my theories into practice: a daunting project when it became clear to me what I had to do. It was necessary to get to know a mob of women, all searching for their own freedom. I could not squeeze this ‘everywoman’ out of my mind. Simply screening an accurate description of one’s life with a facade of false names and places was not satisfying to me either as a writer or a reader. Fiction is a literary composition wherein the writer creates above, below and around the real world. I was sick of sorry women, in my own and others’ stories, who were not in control of their own downfall.
#HUNTING LESSON ROSE TAIPAN FREE#
I had been hunting for an ‘everywoman’, the free archetypal female, to underlie a possible Hamlet, Peer Gynt, Candid of my gender. Since 1974 I have been developing theories of the feminine aesthetic in literature.
#HUNTING LESSON ROSE TAIPAN HOW TO#
Two or three years later, I was writer-in-residence at Monash University, wondering what and how to write, suffering the culture shock and absurdity of changing from ‘taxi-driver’ to ‘writer’. But she took me to lunch at Monash University, where she was writer-in-residence, and discussed the mathematical aspects of my first chaotic attempt at long fiction, Lots Of Potential. Perhaps Remember The Tarantella started with Christina Stead’s challenge to me: it’s very difficult to make an interesting novel with no men in it at all. Graphic novel is a stupid term that often encompasses things that are not novels, but I used it as a blanket term for anything comics I read that were bound rather than stapled. Minis are shorter works, stapled, and generally self-published by the artist, or done by a small press like Shortbox or Youth in Decline. I was totally lazy about crediting creators on series because my actual list for that is a grid, keeping track of each issue. Similarly, when listing creators on trades, I tended to only list writer and artist which is enough for some books, but sometimes there are many more, inkers, and colorists and letterers, and maybe I’ll do better next year.
Support your local library, your local comic shop (especially Hub Comics if you’re in the Boston area), and indie comic shows like MICE.

The Wylde Interview: Jenn Murray
Tumblr media
NORTHERN IRISH ACTRESS JENN MURRAY IS AMASSING AN EXTRAORDINARILY VARIED BACK CATALOGUE OF WORK; FROM HER DEEPLY DISTURBING BREAKOUT MOVIE DOROTHY MILLS (2008) – PLAYING THE EPONYMOUS, DISTURBED TEEN – TO LIGHT COMEDY, IN THE DELIGHTFUL JANE AUSTEN FLICK LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP (2016), AND ON TO HER TURN AS THE SHY CHASTITY BAREBONE IN FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM (2016). ADDING TO THESE ROLES, SHE’S IN THIS MONTH’S MEGA-RELEASE MALEFICENT: MISTRESS OF EVIL, PLAYING ALONGSIDE MICHELLE PFEIFFER, AND WE MANAGED TO STOP THIS MERCURIAL PERFORMER FOR 5 MINUTES, FOR A WYLDE CHAT-AND-SHOOT…
Interview by David Newton / Photography by Etienne Gilfillan
Wylde:  Could you briefly outline your character in the upcoming Maleficent: Mistress of Evil movie? What do you most like about her?
Jenn Murray: My character is called Gerda and she is Queen Ingrith’s right hand woman and devoted servant. Gerda is skilful in weaponry and other perhaps more sinister tools. What I most liked about Gerda was her focus, she was incapable of being distracted. She had no interest in being seen in a spotlight. She worked hard without seeking reward.
You exploded onto the acting world with your debut performance in the deeply disturbing movie Dorothy Mills… was that a difficult role to take on so early in your career?
I find the difficulties in a career as an actor are not the roles specifically but how you maintain your confidence and creative satisfaction when you are unemployed. Dorothy Mills was a gift of a role. I had an amazing scene partner in Carice van Houten and everyday was pure joy. Even though it was my first job, I was aware of how lucky I was to land such a complex role and I savoured it. They bleached the crown of my hair every Friday night. Note to twenty-one year old self: say no to a weekly bleach! It was a strange movie, unsettling and very atmospheric. I am so proud to be a part of it.
I hear from our photographer Etienne that you’re not a fan of musicals? Why not? I love them!
Yes, I appreciate the unbelievable talent and discipline that goes into them but it’s just not really my bag, so to speak. I do think Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago is utterly magical; the performance is primal and that is thrilling to watch.
If you could move eventually into directing, what sort of movie would be your debut film?
My focus would lean towards writing and producing, rather than directing. To be a director is such a massive undertaking, I don’t think I would want that responsibility. The films I want to make are the films I want to see. Manchester By The Sea, Last Of The Mohicans, When Harry Met Sally, Thelma and Louise are all films I adore. The land plays a role, whether it is autumn in New York City, or the dusty roads around the Grand Canyon. I like intimate, urgent conversations amidst nature. I like characters who show fortitude and resilience against circumstance or themselves. My aspiration would be to tell stories that make an individual watching feel expansive and hopeful.
And who would you cast in it? (In other words, who are your favourite actors right now?)
I love actors! There are so many I admire, it would be hard to choose. I like an actor who hand themselves over to the spectator without vanity. In a dream scenario I would like to work with John Hawkes, Kyle Chandler, Marion Cotillard, Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki and Christopher Walken.
What do you most fear?
I fear rodents. When I lived in London, one climbed up through the sink drain and scuttled along my jars of seasonings, smoked paprika, red pepper flakes, garlic salt. I silently and swiftly packed a bag and went immediately to a friend’s house. I did not resume normal breathing for several hours. It was the size of a kitten.
Stage or screen: you are extremely adept at both, but do you lean towards either one in particular?
I love both. I love acting, you see, so whichever way it unfolds, I am game! I feel particularly exhilarated by a live audience; they give you energy and you give yourself. It feels sacred. Lately, it can feel if something is not documented by a photograph or a video, it has less meaning. But I think the moments that are present and private in an art form are essential for the human spirit. I saw Adam Driver in Burn This recently and I already know I will never forget that performance. In film, I love how the camera can see what you are thinking. I like the collaboration and the early mornings. I like the pocket of silence when the camera rolls and the First AD yells “Action!” and you go searching with your scene partner. I have been so fortunate to work with real masters of their craft. Colleen Atwood, the costume designer on Fantastic Beasts and Ellen Mirojnick, the costume designer on Maleficent, are two women that I am so inspired by. They take you in, they think of the story, they pick up a material, a colour and they create an epic painting. When I have a costume designed by one of them, I feel I have an extra layer of confidence around me to take a leap with the character.
I believe you have a fondness for 1980’s movies; which ones, and why?
I do! The fondness is for so many reasons. Firstly when I was a child, my older brother and sister were watching these movies and so, if I was lucky, I could sit with them and watch for fifteen minutes before I had to go to bed. I love Back To The Future and The Breakfast Club, Alien and Ghostbusters, Working Girl! I liked the structure back then, when a camera would sit on two actors for pages of dialogue with the confidence that the audience would not lose interest. Sigourney Weaver played characters who were smart and fun and aspirational, yet attainable. Also in the Eighties there was less interest in celebrity culture and so you were an actor because you wanted to act, not because you wanted to be famous. There was less focus on pleasing a mass audience and more dedication to telling a story that was authentic.
You look amazing in the clothes we got you to wear for our shoot; there’s a moody, character-actress quality to the pictures. What do you gravitate towards, fashion-wise?
I like Ralph Lauren and Carolina Herrera, both fans of the classic white shirt! I like clothes that make you look comfortable and chic. I gravitate towards someone who has a signature look that is timeless. I think Keanu Reeves always looks great in his black suits and desert boots and Sofia Coppola in her tailored suits and silk dresses. I adore silk scarves. The production team of Maleficent had a black silk scarf made for me, and I was delighted. I have a weakness for a great leather jacket. I found this 1950’s brown leather baseball jacket at a market in Los Angeles. I definitely did not need it but I couldn’t resist.
Finally (our favourite question!): what strange dreams have you had recently?
I dreamt Jack Nicholson was cooking me dinner in an attic the other night. He had a mini fridge and he pulled out mince meat, fresh figs and a can of coke!

Humming bird hawk moth, Colleen Shaw
This painting is about light and joy. I had been watching a humming bird hawk moth in my neighbour's garden. In the painting the moth has become mixed in with the plants in my window sill. Also I had been looking at Picasso and the painting "Owl on a chair with sea urchins" and I wanted to recreate that fantastic orange light. At the moment I am really pleased with this image and want to explore further light and angular forms. It also reminds me of Winifred Nicholson and the paintings where she looked through prisms. I think this painting is the beginning of a new range of work for me.

Olympic Eventing: Swiss Land ‘Final’ Tokyo Slot, But Team Chances Still Out There
Switzerland claimed the last Olympic team place for Olympic 2020 at the FEI Eventing Nations Cup final at Boekelo in the Netherlands on October 13th. Their squad has been coached since the winter by Andrew Nicholson and it certainly shows. They finished the best of the teams in the overall Nations Cup rankings not already bound for Tokyo Olympic.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Eventing fans can book Olympic Eventing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
The Tokyo factor added an extra frisson to Boekelo’s traditionally lively end-of-season party. But Boekelo might not quite be the Tokyo last-chance, because “qualification” has a strange interpretation in equestrianism. You can be qualified AND ineligible simultaneously.
Tumblr media
Despite all the format manipulation aimed at admitting new countries, Olympic hopefuls still have to meet the Minimum Eligibility Requirement (MER) before occupying the place they have supposedly clinched. And the MER deadline for the team contest – a minimum of three riders of prescribed competence – is approaching like an express train: December 31st.
For newbies China and Thailand, it’s a case of so near and yet so far! Those two countries won their region’s quota place at a special competition in Saumur, France in May, amid much fanfare from the FEI. But the competition was staged at the old two-star/new three-star level. Rather less public attention was drawn to enormous “ask” of now mastering the next level up in a matter of months: the MER requires one completion including a cross-country clear, at the new five-star long format, or two at the new four-star, a long and a short.
While I may have missed something on the FEI database, it looks like two Chinese eventers have obtained the MER so far, the experienced Alex Hua Tian who ran as an individual at Beijing 2008, and Liang Ryuji. Thailand has just one, Weerapat Pitakanonda – both he and Liang secured their MERs in under five weeks at their first four-star attempts in Europe this summer and, it has to be said, did so fairly comfortably. China has a further three rider’s half-way there with four-star short qualifications, and Thailand one.
Tumblr media
There are 13 remaining opportunities to obtain Olympic MERs worldwide, largely at events in the Americas and Antipodes. Riders are now prohibited from chasing MERs within 24 days of starting a “Long” CCI cross-country or within 10 days of a “Short.” That is a new stipulation, preventing horses being over-run at last-minute competitions which have had a strange way of appearing in the calendar before previous Games.
But can China and Thailand, in all seriousness, achieve this? And if so, given the precarious nature of Eventing, can they feasibly keep four horses fit and well to start in Tokyo Olympic from such a minute pool of participants? China has invested all its effort in the pre-selected six based in Europe this year.
So at least one team place is likely to be back in the pot soon. Who benefits will be decided by the special Olympic rankings table – most likely northern European. The FEI will reallocate if needed by February 17th. Canada is maybe just a notch too far down this list. However, the top two competitors from the Group D Olympic Eventing ranking list will be invited to compete. The list is currently topped by Karl Slezak and Colleen Loach, but Holy Jacks-Smither is on her way to Les Etoiles de Pau CCI5*-L in hopes of improving her ranking.
I chatted about this with Alex Hua Tian, who seems pretty sanguine about China’s prospects for Olympic 2020 and looks at the long-term. The mere possibility of a team presence has, he says, already piqued interest at the national level, and if they don’t make Tokyo Olympic, the European experience has stood China’s embryo team in good stead for a crack at Paris 2024. He also reminded me that it took Japan (third in the Boekelo Nations Cup final) two Olympic cycles to develop the strength and depth to be competitive in time for Olympic 2020. Given the chance, other non-traditional nations can catch up quickly and see off some of the well-aired concerns about the dilution of quality.
Meanwhile, Boekelo’s customized version of the Olympic three riders/no drop-score system was unexpectedly entertaining. At least it seemed so to me compared with last year’s trials of the new Olympic 2020 format at Mill street (Ireland) and Strzegom (Poland;) they were so bewildering I thought my head would fall off.
The Boekelo teams all seemed determined to complete their original trio. But I still harbor fears that someone who has been a spectator for half the competition will end up mounting the team podium next year. We saw how real that possibility could be at Boekelo when New Zealand finished fourth out of 12 good squads, despite calling up their substitute after the dressage, having accepted 20 extra penalty points.
Jennie, of course, she is still shown as a non-completion on the individuals’ scoreboard, just the kind of contradiction that will make casual observers glaze over when watching Tokyo Olympic on TV. Diehard fans have been digesting the substitution formula for months, but still probably watched Boekelo with one eye on the “bluffers guides” thoughtfully published by Horse & Hound and Eventing Nation.
Even the FEI’s own press release about Boekelo says the scoring caused a lot of head-scratching! The Boekelo commentators certainly had difficulty trying to distill it to a few words – good luck explaining it on Twitter next year!
