Bias against Agamemnon 🙄

Because the bias against Agamemnon is also horrible in the scholarly field, let me show you this one, that is just atrocious 🙄 I found it yesterday while researching something:

The aristeia (ἀριστεία from ἄριστος meaning "the best") is the greatest moment of heroism and glory, where a warrior excels himself and stands out for his skills. Who are the Greek heroes performing an "aristeia" in the Iliad? Diomedes in Books V-VI, Agamemnon in Book XI, Patroclus in Book XVI and Menelaus in Book XVII.

The author deliberately ignores that, unlike Diomedes and Menelaus, Agamemnon doesn't receive any divine aid in his performance, so he could only be compared to Patroclus. Both heroes are fighting with their "human" strength alone. From Agamemnon, we're told that he kills 6 known Trojans and many others (literally too many for the narrator to name them), while Patroclus kills 27.

Yeah, probably because no one else dares to fight him? Hector is not around because Zeus literally orders him to retreat so he and Agamemnon won’t fight together (although the Iliad does not explain why Zeus does this). In Book VII when Hector asks for a single combat, none of the Greeks wants to face him at first, none. Menelaus offers himself because of shame, and Agamemnon stops him so Hector won't kill him. Then Nestor makes a speech to "scold" the Greeks, and after that Agamemnon is the first one to offer himself to fight Hector in single combat, followed later by Diomedes and the other heroes.

The biases of the author also shows when he deliberately omits that the narrator says many times that Agamemnon is the first one to go in front of the army and attack first, and is always leading the troops: verses 91, 154, 165, 188, 179. Homer compares him to a lion and a devastating fire for his incessant slaughtering.

What’s even the point of this sentence? The first hero in the Iliad who is said to have missed a spear throw is Antiphos (IV-491), then Diomedes in Book VIII, 119, and only then Agamemnon. Now, indeed, Antiphos and Diomedes miss their throw and hit someone else instead, but they’re not in single combat, there are more people around so the spear can actually hit someone, unlike in the case of Agamemnon who is fighting face-to-face with Iphidamas, not among the crowd of warriors. Is that enough to claim Agamemnon is a bad warrior? Absolutely not. Who else in the Iliad does miss a spear throw and hits nothing at all? 1) Sarpedon (XVI, 477), 2) Achilles (XXI, 169) and Menelaus (XIII, 605). Agamemnon, Achilles, and Menelaus are called great spear throwers by Homer (Menelaus gets this epithet a lot). So, according to the author, Achilles, and Menelaus would be “inferior warriors” just because they threw a spear and missed hitting anything? How is Agamemnon the "inferior" warrior, but Achilles and Menelaus missed shots don't count?

Also, by claiming that Agamenon "is the first hero to make a clean miss..." the author makes it sound like the first thing Agamemnon does is "throw a spear and fail", ignoring that during verses 84-221 Agamemnon kills 6 named heroes and many unnamed Trojans. His missed shot just comes in verse 233, but after that, he kills his opponent anyway.

Here is when I feel like... some scholars are just trolling rather than making serious work.  I mean… seriously?? SERIOUSLY? Diomedes does it too in the same Book after being wounded by Paris' arrow!!! SAME BOOK: “he (Diomedes) sat down to draw the arrow from his foot, and sharp was the pain he suffered as he did so. Then he sprang on to his chariot and bade the charioteer drive him to the ships, for he was sick at heart”. How is Diomedes’ wound different from Agamemnon’s wound? Ares himself abandons battle when wounded. Even the Trojans like Deiphobos and Helenus leave the battlefield when wounded. And again, the author makes it seem like Agamemnon has some minor wound and leaves the battlefield because he is weak. What Homer tells us is that Agamemnon is wounded on his arm by Coön, who attacks him stealthily by the back, and with his spear, pierces Agamemnon's arm, (the weapon goes through the flesh to the other side). And yet, Agamemnon does not stop fighting, faces Coön and kills him, and then keeps on killing more Trojans while being wounded, with his spear, sword, and stones.

And once Agamemnon leaves the field because after the blood dries the pain is felt and becomes unbearable (Homer compares it to the pain of a woman in labor), Hector can join the battle and he says that the best (ἄριστος) -of the Greeks- has left (verse 288).

so..... seriooouslyyy.... I don't understand why people hate Agamemnon SO MUCH that they ignore the source material. There's plenty of other verses in the Iliad that show Agamemnon's bravery and strength, and even Socrates (Xenophon) would praise Agamemnon for being a good king and a good spearman (warrior). I'm baffled.

if you don’t mind me asking, what are your thoughts on Parisians? Seeing as you’re from France. I’ve met plenty of French people(my city has a lot of French tourists) and I’ve heard mixed opinions. Some hate Paris and others love it but when I hear tourists talk about it they usually complain that the city is filthy, expensive, dirty, and “ghetto” for lack of a better word. Also that there’s very incredibly rude and egotistical Parisians who treat everyone like dirt. while I’ve never been to France, I have a theory that most people write it off as just being Paris, but that other parts, specifically southern France, would be with friendlier interactions from the people there. Do you think that would be somewhat correct? Or would you say Paris is a good example of the rest of the country? I’ve always wanted to go to Nice and Bordeuax more than Paris

Parisians are or appear rude because they think you owe them politeness but they can disrespect you if you annoy them (passive agressive or direct). Also they are very much stressed… always on the go, going to point A to point B as fast as possible… some parisians think they are bettee than the others because of their opinions and you’ll know it by the way the express themselves ; very much like : 🤓🙄🚬 « well no, you can’t understand because you are not like us » « you don’t know what you’re talking about » and they use sarcasm a lot! (That’s actually french lol).

But if you surround yourself with good parisians they are fun to be with, very unpredictable but also very much engaged in their belief!

As for Paris… please avoid that city… especially the subways! I know it’s way less worse than NY’s subways but still… avoid it. Paris IS filthy, smelly, beautiful but at the same time boring. It’s boring when you visit the touristic places but it’s amazing if you go to parks, smaller museums, places that are not glamorized by the whole world. It’s worth it! « Jardin des Bagatelles » IS WAY MORE worth it than the Eiffel Tower or Le Louvre if you love nature, HUGE regal garden!

The rest of the France is way more friendly than Paris, the south is very welcoming but they have a hot temper compared to parisians who try to hold on lol. They are very polite and LOVE polietness! It’s really a thing in France. They are more welcoming over foreigners but you have to speak french if you want to have friends… that’s logically the least you can do… coming in a country and not being able to talk a bit of the langue to maintain a small conversation is annoying and shows some disrespect over the people and their culture… French are proud of their history, culture and such beware of what you say in front of them 😂

We love trash talking our own country but we hate it when foreigners do!

France is really a good spot to travel to but the experience is better if it’s not only Paris but the other part of the country. Traditions, local culture and such are different from place to place and the landscape are wonderful at the south and the west/north-west for me!

People say that?? I haven't seen anyone say that she trapped him. Yes there are many(majority) cosplayer believers. And she was blamed later on bcs of how hard she was trying to keep that sham going. I am not saying that tae didn't take part in it, but his participation ended in Paris. Jn on the other hand wasn't even letting go till dec.

As for that jin thing, yeah I came across that too. It was actually quite bizzare coz the stand they took is seriously odd. According to them jk was equally emotional when jin was enlisted as when tae enlisted but less so when hobi went. Jk himself said that he was more upset when hobi was going. And how he was when tae went is honestly not comparable to any of the times before. He was holding back tears the entire time. Problems with abandonment? That's new. They're not the only ones though. I've seen some Taekookers frame this as Jungkook being upset solely with the inconvenience of enlistment; taking him away from his work. Some of them genuinely believe that it's a magical forever relationship that's not affected by anything.

extremely religious takes on the enemy lmao. i think because i'm a sucker for tech being used in spy movies that the airport scene was my favourite. 1. ethan not being found through the cctv- what a fun intro! 2. benji with the bomb- nice to see him do something...( i mean you made me think him running in the airport trailer scene was important 🙄)

IMF team: luther talked more than he has in other movies and i demand more. thanks. i kinda wish they'd use the team more ig. because they are literal field agents so they can fight? i hope? and the whole train scene benji was just gone like waiting thinking "wow he should be here by now" like LET HIM DO SOMETHING!!!

the fact that the entity has control over lots of techy stuff so benji n luther cant really do much??? makes me sad. like let them talk to each other :( i like the gadgets. i liked the little banter luther n benji had.

lastly- the scene where ethan jumps off the cliff- only women are in his flashbacks?? like i thought we'd established the IMF team as his. family lowkey y'know. it was just like okay...

in venice: white widow wasnt bad i guess. the benji dupe voice- love how it played on ethan's loyalty! i think it showed well how dangerous the enemy was- but for some reason i'm still more afraid of the past villain- lane, due to the many examples and horrors he's actually committed. ig im not into the blue ai enemy.

grace: my one thing is that i get that she might have had to be brought into the team to be safe BUT compared to ilsa, she is a pickpocket. a crime commiter at best. she is not at the level of a field agent (unless plot armour??) . not much fighting skills. to me she's kinda a liability. not to mention her constantly running away like. i was endeared to her at the airport because of her confidence. i get that maybe she becomes aware of the world-threatening shitshow she's been dragged into unwillingly but still. idk if she's cut out for the job. compared to ilsa a literal ex-agent with ties to MI6. even on the goddamn train she didnt really trust ethan YOU almost DIED?! if not for the plot armour of ethan parachuting into the carriage. girl literally almost killed him by handcuffing him to the car like very funny he just saved your life. literally not trusting ethan on the piano scene What? i dont care thats shes a orphan you've literallly been through so much. with ethan.

also paris i didnt even know if they ever said her name? she was angry and dressed up and had some rabid dog scenes (like go girl) but i hope she does more in the next part! like the part where she holds up ethan and grace with a stab wound (woah. strong)

other stuff: the dutch angles being used in like 50% of the shots like CALM DOWN i love the mi:1 references but were they always so disorieting maybe im just getting old

the scenes? ilsa dies and ethan looks a bit distressed. the scene where they're hugging was so like woah okay but felt really like. shoved in there like. Okay yeah something bad is gonna happen to her 😭😭

in the end, rogue nation + ghost protocol are still my #1s. characters like brandt and ilsa had really interesting backgrounds and fit into the IMF team easily- the films centering around their teamwork is why i got so into MI in the first place. grace doesn't offer any like addition i dont think she can even bicker with the team for funsies (like brandt/ilsa) . she's not cool shes a poor girl that didnt know what she was getting into 😭

things i did like:

action scenes. awesome((besides the lack of luther and benji there)) ilsa being awesome in the desert

the cinematography (beautiful. as always.)

Yes! Anon... the same pattern has been implemented with or to Val.

Yes, Anon, the same Jared did with Val. After pap pics with Momma (dinner involved) their so called relationship died. Val has been spending a lot of time with momma Leto and suddenly Jared was no longer connected with Val and what is more interesting… he was no longer fighting for this connection and his beloved girlfriend. Make the shows focus be at least 90% J&C screen time and let S&C be themselves off camera as pre 2016.

AHHHHHH GOOOD DON'T REMIND US ABOUT APRIL/STERLING!!! 2 years later and I'm still so pissed about that getting cancelled. Like the show was actually good!!! AGHHHHHHHHH SCREW NETFLIX 🙄🙄🙄

God, has it been two years?? But I knowww, I honestly still think about it and what could have been. In recent history I can't think of a cancelation I've hated more, it deserved at least another season so much. It was so sharp, so funny, so sweet. It makes me sad, tbh, to see a show like that not do well.

And gosh, April/Sterling, they were sooooooooo good, I'll never get over how perfectly they were done in every way. I can't believe I'm not gonna see the two of them together again and resolve the s1 ending...

I'm literally talking to a friend right now about Astrid and Lilly Save the World and can't help but compare it to April/Sterling and what that managed to do after how we'd shipped Faberry and Paris/Rory, how it's such a fulfillment of a uniquely f/f ship trope. I hope AALSTW does it well too but I'm always gonna miss what Stepril did first, and so well. The casting, the writing, the acting! How they went from childhood friends to rivals to this adooorable little couple! There was so much thought and effort in their writing.

I just got finished loving her Venice/VFF/Paris looks on the red carpet. I posted and reposted the tons of ppl wishing her birthday wishes on her special day. I recently talked about how I loved her interview in her new British Vogue shoot, and how she was open about discussing some of the things she's been going through. I've written literal dissertations on here (with pictures and receipts!) about why Zendaya is a great person, why I'm a fan of hers, why ppl shouldn't be hating on her for no good reason, etc. In fact, I've defended her so much in here, that some antis and trolls actually think that I secretly work for Zendaya's team (yea right 🙄). (Writed this today, but actually watched the movie on the 23rd of august, but I went through the screencaps for recap)

- This is not a movie I would watch as a kid. I probably watched maybe in kindergarten or rented it cause I have nostalgia for some scenes but maybe I never watched it fully or maybe just got them from picture books or the Disney magic English vhs. But I actually remember the live action movies more. Specially the cruella cake scene. But haven’t watched them in sooooooooooooo long. Kindergarten really

- It’s a cute movie, not a fave tho. As far as animal movies go, I prefer lady and the tramp, aristocats, rescuers, lion king, bolt…

- The opening credits are really cute. It’s not just illustrations. Very playful

- I romanticize London and Paris a lot cause of movies like this 😭😭😭 the aesthetic is just so good

- Nothing looks better than sleeping beauty, but if I didn’t know anything about these movies production I don’t think I would consider this movie’s animation and art style a downgrade compared. As I said, nothing competes with sleeping beauty, but 101 Dalmatians isn’t and didn’t need to be that and instead the artists gave it just a unique art style. The backgrounds in this movie are gorgeous. I love how messy the art is

- I love the beginning of this movie a lot. Pongo is so funny. My fave scene is the ladies passing with their very similar dogs 😭😭😭😭 character design at its best and I love that these ladies make small appearances through out the movie. I don’t think dogs reflect their human’s appearance irl but it was such a fun point the movie made. I love it. Best part of the movie

- Anita and perdita are so classy. How did these too lazy asses got them to fall in love with them? 😭😭 no, but seriously, pongo and roger are charming, cute and clumsy type. And he writes music???? I’d fall too, who am I kidding

- Thinking of going to read my books to the park too, maybe I’ll get lucky

- their meeting goes from awkward to cute so fast 😭😭😭 I love this whole beginning

- But the wedding is so cute and simple. And the dogs on the outside, the roses, the glass church window illuminating, UGH GOALS GOALS GOALS both anita&roger and perdita&pongo. They are sooooo cute

- Cruella was never one of my fave villains but I see why she’s so popular. She does have killer 👀 fashion sense. That coat looks so fab I want it for winter

- Why hasn’t Anita cut this woman off her life? She’s showing too many red flags in just 2 minutes 🙄

- Roger has no business being this petty but I love him 😭

- The iconic cruella song. It’s for sure one of the most recognizable from Disney

- Feel so bad for perdita, being pregnant and now worried her kids might be taken away from her. One even almost dies 😭😭😭😭 this poor dog

- The waiting for the birth of the pups to be over scene is so tense and a rollercoaster omg I really feel the anxiety and excitement and sadness and relief

- The dead pup scene is so sad but so well done. It’s precious. Pongo looking sad and patient putting his paw on roger’s knee while roger tries to save the pup ugh precious

- Why did cruella just do a jump scare 😭😭😭😭 WOMAN WHY ARE U HERE

- Roger and pongo being fed up with this woman is so funny 😂 I guess dogs and owners really do look like each other. They have the same glare and black spots 😭😭

- Roger is THE man

- The doggies watching tv scene is also very cute. I love the distinct personalities already showing. Cuteness overload

- The tv shows and commercials in this movie are so good.

- I think from now on is when I start to lose interest. Idk, the beginning scenes are just my faves
