why aren't there more mysteries that take place in nursing homes & retirement communities. i want to watch a group of deranged retirees-cum-amateur-detectives combine their powers of:
decades of life experience
boredom-fueled busybody shamelessness
access to the most gossipy next-door-neighbors in existence
"I am too old to be arrested and/or give a shit" attitude
and solve crimes. this should be an enormous subgenre.

I think one of my favorite Funtermina things is how it uses characters as narrative foils, specifically in how those characters interact with each other and everyone else.
Karin and Daan’s is the most discussed as it’s probably the most apparent within the text: their volatile opposing viewpoints on life via their upbringings (despite being extremely similar otherwise). When Karin and Daan interact, it’s like a person arguing with themself. They clash like ammonia and bleach, unable to reconcile how similar they are (haha cleaning chemical analogy) yet toxic in their association.
Marina and Levi represent the different realities of Prehevil, what with Marina’s privileged upbringing versus Levi’s absolute shitshow of an existence. And yet, they get along incredibly well and form a cadence with one another because through each other, they can reconcile their upbringings in Prehevil. Levi is the Prehevil Marina tried to escape—Marina is the Prehevil Levi hoped to return to.
Marcoh and Olivia are interesting because—and I will argue this to the death—their relationship is wholly as siblings. And they’re also deeply connected by their relationships with their sisters, specifically how those sisters formulated and defined how they see themselves. Marcoh has done nothing but live to protect his sister, while Olivia has forever lived in her sister’s shadow. Their identities revolve completely around their sisters, and this also colors their relationship with each other as siblings.
I wish it was explored more, but I think there’s a level of disenfranchisement when Marcoh fervently tries to protect Olivia the same way he protected his younger sister (edit: rb for amendment). He clearly sees her in that role, and Olivia’s already got guilt written into her about her disability making her a “charity case.” I say this also because of their different opinions on guns, power, and death: Marcoh has no bloodlust and seems exhausted when he has to hurt others, while Olivia becomes almost jubilant when she receives a gun. And those reactions to enacting violence are directly informed by their relationships with their sisters: a begrudging responsibility vs empowerment.
My favorite is probably Abella and O’saa as foils. As characters they’re probably my favorites, and their foil makes it even better.
Abella easily connects with everyone around her, ensuring that they’re all getting along (or not killing each other) and she tries desperately to help everyone, even at her own detriment. She cares, so much, even too much.
O’saa on the other hand, is the exact opposite. He actively chooses to connect with everyone as little as possible, to the point where you can kill someone in front of him and he won’t give a shit. This is, obviously, to his detriment in terms of his goal towards enlightenment. He cares too little, even if at all.
They perfectly represent the dichotomy between altruism vs selfishness, the mundane vs the macro, democracy vs individualism. Fundamentally, both Abella and O’saa get shit done, and what makes them so compelling as foils is how similar the results of their different processes are.
Both of them are the only two that are capable of saving everyone. Abella does so by interacting with many of the other contestants, while O’saa does this by ignoring everyone and just occam’s razoring that shit. They both get shit done and to the greatest net success, but in both cases, because they operate on extremes, it’s to the detriment of themselves. The game shows this literally because, well, they sacrifice themselves to Logic for the greater good, but the game also implies this detriment via their moonscorches.
Chaugnaur represents how others have reduced Abella to a sexual object for their pleasure or a mindless brute for labor. It is a physical manifestation of how interacting and connecting with others can be to one’s detriment because Abella often cannot control how people see and define her. Mastermind, on the other hand, is O’saa’s brain swelling and overtaking everything else on his head to the point where he is blind (save for the eye) and mute, only able to speak in mumbles. Mastermind is how O’saa values logic, knowledge, comprehension over anything else, becoming blind to other viewpoints save for his own. Additionally, it’s unable to communicate or connect with anyone else, only able to ruminate get never share its thoughts.
Abella is one of the first to Moonscorch; O’saa is one of the last. I love them as foils because even though they’re the most different in terms of anything, they don’t hinder one another at much all. They’re just kinda chill. And this makes sense because their dichotomies aren’t volatile like Karin and Daan’s, nor complementary like the others. Rather, they operate in balance—you cannot be too altruistic without some selfishness. To help everyone and to achieve enlightenment, you must consider both the mundane and the greater picture. Society operates on a shared democracy and on empowering individuals.
Still, the fact that even operating on the extremes has the greatest positive effect (in terms of utilitarianism) really says smth abt whether these values even matter. But I’d argue that they do matter, cause it’s that question of whether it’s worth it to suffer or even sacrifice for the greater good.
As a whole, each foil represents a central theme/motif of Fear & Hunger: internal vs external locus of control (Karin and Daan), environment dictating identity (Marina and Levi), relationships and their impact (Marcoh and Olivia), and the thematic shitshow that is Abella and O’saa.
Tldr; the game is about some girls and their boy best friends.

Honestly everybody talking about how Philza and other cc's have unfollowed Forever which does show how serious the situation is but like the fact Bad has completely stopped talking about Forever (and is avoiding talking about him) + has taken a hard stop to liking any fanart with him in it just shows how fucked this all is like...
When you got Badboyhalo (who was not afraid to speak his mind when he believed the green dude was being hit with false allegations) to go completely radio silent about you that's how you know you fucked up.

A Speech For the Colonist.
It is my opinion that communist movements within the US fail because they refuse to address decolonization.
It is my further opinion that the contradiction between colonizer and colonized supercedes the contradiction of class. The Native American Nations are colonized, Black people are colonized, Hispanic people are colonized. Colonization is the key to white supremacy and white supremacy is the key to class within the United States and Canada.
If you talk to most white communists about decolonization within the United States you'll get things like, "Well, decolonization will come with the revolution because we'll give the people the autonomy and resources they need to care for their communities." This is the exact same rhetoric that alienated black revolutionaries from the American Communist Party in the 60s. "Under communism every worker will have what he needs and be able to give according to his means, so we don't need to worry about race."
Comrade, we do. We do need to worry about race. We cannot simply wish a reality away because in our minds Everyone Will Be White in a communist society.
We need to acknowledge the fact that every single White Person within the United States, and the rest of the Americas for that matter, is a colonist. Our institutions are colonial. Our industry is colonial. Our cities are colonial. Our infrastructure is colonial. Our lawns are colonial. Every single aspect of our lives has its roots in colonization.
We still plunder the earth like we're sending silver and timber back to England and Spain.
By pretending that we are not colonists we make it impossible to address the ways in which we colonize. By ignoring the ways in which we colonize we fail to address the ways in which we are imperialist. By failing to address our imperialism we fail address capitalism.
We are colonists. Pretending that this isn't the case doesn't make it any less reality.
You'll acknowledge the fact that we live on stolen land but would you hand Seattle back to the Duwamish? Would you cede Delaware back to the Lenape? Would you take up arms, and then lay them down to a nation of people that are unlike you? Would you take up arms and lay them down again for a nation of people that you might not agree with politically? Have you confronted your fear that they would treat you just like we treat them?
For that matter, how have you addressed your conception of Black Nationalism? Any white communist will tell you that Nationalism as a concept is counter-revolutionary but how do you address the fact that there is an entire race of people who were ripped from their homes and forced to colonize another land? The solution certainly isn't Liberia, which is itself a colonial exercise.
How do you address the fact that any black person will tell you that a nation created for and by black americans would be a pretty good deal in their book? How do address the fact that our colonial nation isn't their nation and they know it? What do you do? Do you call them reactionary? Do you tell them that their desire for a home of their own is because we orphaned their ancestors and that they need to get over it?
Comrade, these are the questions you need to answer. You need to listen to the people we have colonized and you need to really observe our material conditions.
We live with the unique situation that, as a result of a vicious and often ignored genocide, the colonizers are the majority ethnic group within the colonized land. White people make up 57% of this country. And unlike other colonized regions, there's no France for us to return to. There's no England, there's no Belgium, there's no Netherlands, there's no Spain. The working class white is stuck here. It's up to us to address our own reality and to understand that, ultimately, no way and no how can we be the face of revolution within the united states.
No white led communist movement will prosper because, even now, we still have too much to lose. Our people will never start the fight as we are now. Understand that.

Ivan: He didn’t come home again last night. Oscar: Well.. he ain’t gonna be cheating on you, is he? Ivan: I dunno… Oscar: C’mon, he can barely strike up a conversation with a tree. Who’s he gonna be cheating on you with? Ivan: A lumberjack? Oscar: Pfha-.. right. Byrd: Daddy look! I’m a dancerina! Oscar: An amazing one at that! He wants a tutu... Ivan: Wren too? Oscar: [cackles] God, no.. she’d probably clog the shitter with it. Ivan: He can have one of Pixie’s-.. I’ll bring it next time. Oscar: Alright. Ivan: I gotta drop Jude off, anyway… Oscar: Try not to stress about it, eh? Ivan: Jude, Jessie, or Bruno? Oscar: All of it, man.. I dunno. [Ivan snorted, rolling his eyes at Oscar and ruffling Byrd’s hair as he headed outside to fetch Jude] ... [Robin idly twirled a daisy between his fingertips, his and Jude’s legs sprawled beside each other as they lay in the long grass] Robin: It might not be so bad; you’ll probably make loads of new friends n’ stuff. Jude: Maybe, but I wanted us to go to big school together. Robin: Why, so I could sit around not talking to you? [Jude scoffed a half-hearted laugh] Jude: I’d still prefer-… Ivan: Jude! Jude: Gotta go! See you next week. Robin: You’re not sticking around for the weekend? Jude: Mom n’ Gavin are having some sorta party they want me there for on Saturday. Robin: Sucks to be you. Ivan: How y’doin’, bud.. enjoyin’ the treehouse? Robin: Uh-huh. Jude: No grown-ups allowed though! Ivan: Rude. [Ivan chuckled as he threw his arms around Robin and squeezed him farewell; he gave the best bear hugs] Ivan: I’m gonna bring y’brother a tutu next time, fancy one? Robin: I’m good, thanks. Ivan: How ‘bout you? Jude: Only if it’s blue. Ivan: I’ll see what I can do. Robin: You’re both poets-… Jude: And we didn’t know it!

I need to watch Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure to reach my final conclusion on if she's even attracted to men
#girl help i keep thinking about sharpay and ryan being each others only friend growing up#theyre not very good at interpersonal relationships#romance is foreign to them. they dont care about playing romantic interests because they only view romance through the lens of theatre#fake. not real. an act to entertain an audience. so they dont understand why it would be weird#neither of them have ever kissed anyone#sharpay likes things that make her look better#because her whole life is a performance#so she wants troy because hes a shiny accessory to her#thinking about hsm 2 where once again when she tries to perform a romantic song (with troy this time and not her brother)#she still barely fucking looks at him#all of her attention is on the (nonexistent) audience#and ryan. ryan hm#ryan usually performs alongside sharpay#its usually an in universe performance. theyre on a stage. theres an audience#and all of his attention is on pleasing that audience#an exception to this is during the gay baseball song#where theres a different kind of audience BUT#ryan barely looks at them#most of his attention is directed solely to chad#talking flirting teasing being cocky and annoying but clearly addressing him directly through most of the song#first time this has happened with ryan. take that as you will#ANYWAY i can see sharpay as completely uninterested in romance but she hasnt realized that about herself#and she THINKS she wants it. because she sees it as glamorous#or maybe shes a lesbian i dont know#she might be a lesbian#the deciding factor is sharpays fabulous adventure#if she has chemistry with the guy in that movie then shes just repressed and clueless#if she doesnt shes aro#or possibly lesbian

no, no, i don't mean "witch" in the cartoonish old woman with crooked teeth and warts sense, no i don't mean it in the second-half-of-the-20th-century-sitcom sense either, or even the modern pop feminism sense, i mean it the umineko way, which is "someone who understands the narrative through and through"

it’s still so... hm. i'm not sure what words to use here tbh.
but to give the one character that has received such preferential treatment through early access development and full release even more new content + new lines even though he already has a wealth of scenes, detailed animations, incredible world responsiveness, that about totals to having a third more content than everyone else...
all the while the other characters, their romances, their stories and the way the world they're in reacts to them are still either a barren wasteland or bugged to the point they can’t be triggered.

ok i want to talk about aziraphale’s reaction to The Kiss. (yes i’m talking about The Kiss again, it lives rent free in my head)
he looks both desperately confused and angry. he’s upset in ways he can’t fully express to crowley or honestly, even to himself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and i think what’s happening here is that azi can’t handle the fact that crowley’s actually leaving.
because crowley always comes back. after the bandstand breakup, he comes back. after saying he won’t help hide gabriel jim, he comes back. in multiple minisodes where they say they don’t need each other or it’s been decades apart, crowley always comes back.
and this is the crux of the issue, crowley is always the one to come back. crowley goes back to the bookshop, crowley shows up to save aziraphale in azi’s damsel in distress moments. crowley is always the one coming back. never aziraphale.
yes of course azi loves crowley. i think, in some ways, he understands that love more than crowley does for most of the story (even if it’s HEAVILY repressed, and that’s on religious trauma). but azi never does the coming back. he does the waiting. he waits for crowley to realize he was wrong. he waits for crowley to save him (because saving azi makes him so happy).
i think. maybe just a little. aziraphale thought that crowley’s Kiss was him coming back. that it was crowley realizing he was wrong and that he should come back. (also, just throwing this out there. AZI KISSED BACK. AZI HELD CROWLEY AS CLOSE AS HE COULD. HE LEANED INTO IT.) but The Kiss wasn’t crowley coming back. it was a last goodbye. a last “we could’ve been Us. do you see what we’re losing? DO YOU?!”
obviously there was a lot going through his (and crowley’s) minds. a lot of emotions, a lot of pent up anger and frustration, a lot of everything honestly.
but i think part of azi’s anger and sadness post Kiss is because he genuinely thought crowley would come back. because crowley ALWAYS comes back. azi can’t admit that he’s wrong (and if i’m being honest, i don’t think either of them is really wrong per say but that’s a topic for another day)
and the thing is. crowley didn’t come back but he didn’t leave either. yes he walked out of the bookshop but he stood there waiting for azi right up until he was sure azi was actually gone.
for once he gave azi the chance to come back.
crowley didn’t hide in his car. he didn’t drive off before aziraphale could say something else. he stood outside the bentley in clear view. crowley wanted azi to be the one to come back for once. he would’ve been so elated if azi had come back and gotten in the bentley. but azi didn’t. because azi doesn’t do the coming back… at least not yet.

I think it’s interesting that you get to see all three chosen’s living spaces and like for all their bravado they live empty, pathetic lives and the game goes out of it’s way to instill the idea that they’re all desperate to please their gods in ways that are dark mirrors, or at least narratively parallel to our companions. We are a hair away from being our dark other, brother
Except for karlach.

tlhod’s Gender Situation as written in 1968 (published in 1969) was about a man from Earth who goes to another planet inhabited by alternate-bio ambisexual humans who are completely like Earth humans in every other respect. The man from Earth at first expects them to be like men in a way that’s recognizable to him, and that expectation causes him some struggles in relating to them, but he then comes to accept them on their own terms.
An updated look at that Gender Situation might be about a nonbinary person from Earth who goes to another planet inhabited by alternate-bio ambisexual humans who are completely like Earth humans in every other respect. The nonbinary person from Earth at first expects them to be like nonbinary people in a way that’s recognizable to them, and that expectation causes them some struggles in relating to them, but they then come to accept them on their own terms.
Mutatis mutandis since “nonbinary” is a way, way broader category than “man” (hello multigenders I love you) but people who have never heard of gender are going to have a different, for lack of a better word, thing going on than someone who is familiar with a gender binary and has rejected it.
(I also think having a normal earth queer person interact with members of a fantasy gender/lack of gender would be interesting. Real deal meets metaphor. It’s like if an actual trans woman met Jadzia Dax.)

Feeling conflicted about the cyberpunk thingy impulse is going for because like yeah it’s a great theme and I like the aesthetics a lot but what I really like most about cyberpunk is the themes of corporate alienation and/or transhumanism etc etc which I know will not be addressed at all and in fact it’s kind of stupid of me to expect that at all from a minecraft series. Does anyone else get that or just me
