OC New Year's Challenge Day Three: In My ＿ Era

For Nicky Connors and Johnny Lawrence, 1984 starts out promisingly before rapidly deteriorating. As he sinks further and further into Cobra Kai, Nicky realises just how bad it's getting and tries to stop things, but this causes tensions to rise until the two have their biggest argument yet - and Johnny says something he can't take back. The result is months of not speaking, even as Jimmy and Bobby try and mediate between the two - Johnny eventually resolves to try and fix things, but then Daniel LaRusso shows up and Johnny takes out his anger on him instead of actually solving anything. After the events of Halloween, Nicky - heartbroken that her friends would've gone this far - calls them all out before shutting them out. This is a wake-up call, especially for Johnny - but it's one that's come far too late, because now there's no way Nicky will speak to him, and he doesn't know how he can ever come back from that even as he realises he must change things. But things aren't as hopeless as they seem - Nicky just knows that she can't be the one to keep reaching out, that if Johnny wants to make amends he's really got to commit to that, and as the AVT approaches everything's up in the air, and not everything will go the way it might've done...

Hi, yes! Sorry this took me forever to get to, but here we go!

The Post Anon Is Referring To // The First Slideshow Post

Okay so, in chronological order - I'm not putting the slides on again bc they make everything so long;

CHARLIE! Charlie/Charles/Charlus is... not that deep. We can give it all the in-story explanations we want, but the fact of the matter is that I was writing a Farland Files fanfic love letter and I just reused the name. I assume that Purplemango picked it either because they liked it, there's canonically a Charlus Potter he can be named after, and/or as Charles it follows the convention of Potter-Names-Mirror-English-Royalty, but I haven't ever worked up the courage to ask them. Probably never will.

SORREL! Okay so I'm mostly sure that Sorrel showed up in a googled list of Indian names, and it won my personal aesthetic contest - I know his middle name did, I don't remember WHAT his middle name WAS, but it means blue; Sorrel means red, and the Potter could refer to brown and I personally found that clever.

Having said all of this, when I just googled the name to double check, I found out that Sorrel is ALSO term for a plant, spinach dock is also known as common or garden Sorrel. I'm very sure that part isn't on purpose, but the Cobra Lily (Charlie) and Hyacinth/Hydrangea (Sorrel) aus are largely built on me hoarding as many plant names as I feel comfortable with and making them plot points so- *fingerguns* -it works out!

Moving on, I already mentioned the story behind CONNOR! The au was getting to the point I needed names to visualize, I couldn't choose, so I handed my phone and the googled list (no clue what I googled, that was three years and like 9 this-au-has-developed-into-a-whole-new-au-s ago) to my little sister. She said Connor. I said okay.

Honestly, either Sorrel or Connor is my favorite twin. They've just got shiny personalities. It's a close competition tho

TRISTAN! yeah yeah, his spelling is still being decided, chill, it doesn't matter until I start posting the au. I wish I could say something clever but I haven't even checked what Tristain means, unlike the others. I think. Actually, have I ever looked up what Connor means?

Back! Connor means Lover Of Hounds and I- wheezes I cannot. This is Hilarious. Unreasonably so. Little Ruler and his baby brother, Lover Of Hounds.

This tangent added like five minutes to this post and I have NO REGRETS

It also looks like a Gaelic name, which means there's a chance the list I gave to my sis was those, bc I do and will advocate for Irish Lily Potter at any and all given opportunities. If that wasn't what I was thinking it SURE IS NOW

Anyway, back to Tristan; I looked him up after I finished my Connor tangent, and I have once again been blessed in writing because the name could not be more perfect for the au if I tried.

"In Arthurian legend, Tristan (sometimes called Tristram) was a Knight of the Round Table and the tragic hero of the medieval tale "Tristan and Isolde". The tale has been retold in many poems and operas. This ancient name may derive from a Pictish original, Drostan, but the form was probably influenced by the French term "triste", meaning "sad". Gosh I WISH that was why I picked the name, the actual story is so much less cool; I wrote the outline leaving a T in place of the name the whole time (bc I kept trying to use Sorrel but NO I wanted it to be a NEW AU) and I know a guy named Tristan so it made sense to just. expand on the T.

WILLIAM: Will's name was given to me by the same person who helped make the Obscurial Au (Will's au) playlist, and I have no clue what their tumblr handle is but their Ao3 is Lonelyroads. I complained about how I couldn't find twin names that weren't either taken or have Negatory Vibes, and Lonely offered up Will, which follows the aforementioned Potter's-Named-After-English-Royalty tend/convention and looks good with Harry and has good nickname opportunities.

So yeah! That's all of them - there's no overarching trend but they each have their stories.

apparently, Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger support Israel

Disappointed to hear this because im a big fan of these two especially Stallone, i love John Rambo, I love Rocky, I love Cobra. I love T-800, I love John Kimble.

warmups observations that I felt like recording for posterity:

- jonas brodin's new cross-ice passing partner today was, in fact, connor dewar. for some reason

- he also seems to always do some sort of stretching/yoga routine at the dots. upward facing dog/cobra position at the very least.

- even tho kirill is sometimes very blase on the ice he is ALWAYS having fun in warmups. like a little kid. beloved

- boldy missed many shots at the empty net (are we surprised). later he skated over to the boards and seemed to be trying to hit a specific sponsor logo over and over because he must have shot the puck at a fixed spot about six inches off the ground like 12 times in a row. from like a foot away. he then nailed his final one timer at the net.

- middsy almost ran over lettieri bc they didn't see each other coming. I love slapstick.

- kirill does a stretch at the dots as well that makes him look, in the words of @.ferbz, "like a cat in heat". make of this what you will idk either.

- I love when they do little sets as part of warmups. like. starting behind the net, passing between a four guy unit, shoot. next group of four. yEs babe I love intentional group warmups.

- merrill's kids were there. I'm sure he went over to them but I never actually saw it happen skfjsjd

- dewey standing next to other dewey. middsy skates into them at low speed and flattens them into the glass. my biggest regret of the day is not getting this on camera </3

When branching out into the OC Community, I connected to you all, primarily through the OC Creator Bingo. You have all become good friends to me, inspired me, been lovely commenters (both on my fics and in replying to my comments on yours), introduced me to new fandoms, sent me asks, and talked me through elements of my fics.

@shrinkthisviolet helped me dip my toe back into the Star Wars fandom, which was one of my first and treasured fandoms. I never would have watched the Obi-Wan Kenobi series without her. Lucy Kenobi was probably the first Star Wars OC that I read.

@come-along-pond and @the-time-lord-oracle have helped me (whether they knew it or not) by getting back into reading Doctor Who fanfiction, revisiting one of my favorite Doctors, and inspiring me to create my own OC for the fandom, which has made the 60th Anniversary of our show even better.

How did your Cobra Kai/Karate Kid OCs come to be?

So, the first was Nicky Connors and she came about the same way most of my OCs came about - to give one of my favourite characters a friend, with the added layer of 'what if Johnny had a friend outside of karate who tried to help him but wasn't able to' and I was drawn to this concept as it developed into 'what if Johnny had a friend outside of Cobra Kai who still wanted to learn karate but wasn't allowed in Cobra Kai itself because John Kreese is an asshole' and I really loved this idea, and the OC herself as she grew, of how she sees Johnny and the rest of the Cobras as friends, as people who are just being led down a very bad path and yet being unable to really stop that because she's only one person, and sometimes one person isn't enough to help...only for it to turn out that she does have some influences (and later, her friendships with all of them get repaired after they make amends.)

As for her adopted son James in the CK era, I'd already decided that Nicky couldn't have biological kids, but wasn't bothered by this in the slightest and was happy to adopt - she was going to have a whole bunch of kids to start with, but honestly I think just the one is fine.

Now, the Barnes family started out as side characters in my first Mike fic, trying to settle (the ghosts of my past). I wrote this around three months before S5 came out and by this point I'd given up on watching past S4's mid-point because the whole thing was so bad, but I'd heard rumours that Mike would be returning in S5 and would likely join Cobra Kai and that pissed me off because of all the antagonists he has the least stakes in the situation - like he didn't know and probably wouldn't care about the history, he was literally paid to be there and sure, he lost out on the big payday but like. That was ultimately down to Kreese and Silver for making it complicated instead of just reopening CK anyway.

So then I thought 'what if Mike went and had a normal life with a family and had no interest in being dragged into another insane revenge plot', so that's what happened, and what I wrote of Leah and Elaine and Alex I liked (especially Elaine and her plan to set fire to the CK merchandise that was sent, like the chaotic streak was there already). Elaine herself became more established after S5 came out - I didn't watch it, but I was delighted to find out my prediction about Mike was correct, like he did go on to have a normal life! And he was still in the Valley so his family would be too, and I was always annoyed by the Sam-Tory fight so I thought 'what if someone stopped it' followed by 'what if that someone was Elaine' and hey presto, a fic was born! And I also gave more details about her older sister Sarah because I hadn't mentioned her yet. Leah became more developed after I took what canon gave us - co-owner of the furniture store, which she'd inherited from her father who had also been Mike's boss back in the day.

Gemma is an interesting one - because she initially started out as Johnny's daughter from a previous relationship, Robby's older sister, though the jury was out on whether Johnny knew about her or not. This version of her I had for at least a few months, but it didn't go ahead because:

When it comes to creating legacy OCs, especially children, I have to have some kind of connection to the canon character in question, some element of 'they'd be a good dad' and I just wasn't getting that with Johnny

I also didn't see how I could make this story fresh - Johnny's already abandoned one kid, do we really need to see that rehashed?

Then when I was writing my Cobra Kai Mini Rewrites I realised I was much more invested in having him repair his relationship with his actual, canon kid - but I wasn't going to give up on the OC after how much work I'd put into it, so I thought ' what if she was his cousin', which soon sparked off a whole thing about Laura's family because we know very little, but my headcanon was always that she was kicked out at 18 after falling pregnant with Johnny and I thought 'what if she had a much younger sister who came looking for her decades later and had a kid' because I love tragic family dynamics, but also I just found the idea of Johnny having an aunt who could be his sister and a cousin who could be his niece, because the age thing makes it a bit strange for him.

Also I liked the idea of having the running joke of 'I know she looks like my kid but she's not my kid' with most people Gemma runs into assuming this because they look very similar - and sometimes she'll play up to this solely to troll Johnny because it's very funny to do so.

A guide to hockey nicknames

It’s hockey season my friends, and as a true Canadian who’s spent the last little while glued to the WJC and watching the leafs get sniped day after day, I’ve obviously been thinking about hockey nicknames.

So naturally, I decided to create this little guide. Drop what your hockey nickname would be, I’d love to read them!

Most of the time your main nickname depends on your last name, but there are many nicknames based on first names too.

Most common nicknames based on last names are a shortened version of the name accompanied by an -Sey/ Sie, or a simple S or E

Examples:

Mitch Marner - Marns, Mitchy

Auston Matthews - Matty, Tony, Tone

Connor Bedard- Bedsey

Michael Bunting - Bunts

Alexander Kerfoot - footie

Brady Tkachuk - chucky

Brad Marchand - Marchy

Patrick Marleau - Patty

William Nylander - Willy

Last names may also be shortened and given an -Er

Examples:

Kristopher LeTang - Tanger

Joseph Woll- Woller

Brian Spencer - Spinner

Steven Stamkos - stammer

Alexander Steen - Steener

Sometimes nicknames will be a pun or a play on words related to your last name
