rlly thrilled to hear both of you are doing well with ur books. if u don't mind me asking: is it financially viable? Could u do something like that and support urself or is it more like pocket money? are there startup costs? (feel free to ignore this ask if this is something you don't want to talk about)
Hey Anon,
I don't know if you're the same anon but I'll post the link to the ask that sparked this question for any who are curious here.
The answer to all your questions can be yes (helpful, right?)
Details below the cut...
Is it financially viable?
In my opinion, yes but you and I may be at very different stages in our lives. Are you a student? A parent with young children? Are you struggling to pay the light bill? Do you have time and energy to throw into writing daily or nightly around real life? These things matter.
Could I live off what I'm earning since I started self-publishing nearly a year ago? Hell no. I have a very good full-time job with benefits and an excellent retirement package. My husband and I have both agreed I can't walk away from that for anything less than six-figure earnings but I can say our mortgage has been covered by my writing for the past six months. That's meaningful to us and worth my time and effort.
Does success happen? It does but I won't sugarcoat it. For every Lucy Score, Cora Reilly and T.L. Swan, self-published romance authors who are millionaires, there are thousands out there who are making much, much less. From $20 to $10,000 in a month, it varies widely! But there are things you can to do increase your chances of hitting it big.
Also, I should mention that Amy and I are Amazon exclusive, part of their Kindle Unlimited subscription service. The good part about that? We earn 70% of our sales versus 30% if we were classified as Wide authors (people who can publish elsewhere like Smashwords, etc). The not so good part, you're very dependent on Amazon. For now, it's worth it for us and the (very different) niches we chose do well in KU.
Startup costs -
KEEP IT MINIMAL! I would not throw tons of money into fancy formatting software or professional editing if you're looking to self-publish your first novel. Do the work yourself, take advantage of free resources, sites and tools and see a profit (hopefully). I published my first book May 31st last year and I had made up my initial startup costs by the time my second book was released in late July.
What you actually need..
Royalty free images to make covers - $40 and up, up, up
Catch deals from Deposit Photos. Twice a year they do a deal through appsumo where you can get 100 images for $40. It's a steal of a deal. GIMP is free software you can download to make covers. Find YouTube videos to show you how. It's all out there and free. But it takes effort. Sorry, no shortcuts there :)
Reader Services - $10/month
Many, many self-published authors use bonus stories or free stories as Reader Magnets to draw readers and future fans to their newsletters. You need a system to funnel those readers and collect emails. Bookfunnel is who I use. Some of their services are free but you pretty much need that $10/month to make use of the good stuff. They also offer author swaps and newsletter building promos if you want to grow your list of followers. StoryOrigin is an alternative site some people use.
Newsletter - $0
I use Mailerlite which is free up to 1k subscribers. There's also Mailchimp. You can have freebie landing sites from Mailerlite. I haven't bothered with a paid website domain yet but I know this is something I'll need to look into soon.
ARCs - $10 to $20/month
Booksprout is the one I use. There are probably others. I think it's about $10/month for the beginner subscription to get those reviewers. I'm using a mid-list author plan now ~ $190/year. Some niches make use of SM more for this.
Advertising - $0 to thousands
Don't bother until you've got a book or two out there (come ask me if you get to that point). I'd say the only advertising you should focus on to start with is your passive marketing - your blurb, your cover and the keywords you enter on Amazon that make your book discoverable. Beyond that, paid advertising can wait.
However, you can use Tiktok to get your book noticed. Amy is learning the ropes of this and we've both seen people whose sales have skyrocketed thanks to one or two good Tiktoks to draw readers. One person made $10k in a month off of ONE good Tiktok. Other SMs have their successes, too. This is not an area I excel at though. I'd need one of my kids to teach me more... lmao.
Finally, I'll say, I didn't go into this thinking it would make me rich and famous. I wrote 3 million words of Jonsa out of love over the course of five years. I've written 350k words of original fiction the past year and it's paying the mortgage. Thankfully, I love what I'm writing and I've set myself a five-year plan for my 'side hustle' to see how I feel in 2027. We'll see where I am then. Fingers crossed I can claim I'm a six-figure author!
But what you can achieve in self-publishing can be phenomenal if you're writing to market (giving romance readers those tropes they love and hitting the expected story beats) in a genre and niche that has hungry readers. Our discord has verified tiers so people who say they're making 50k in thirty days aren't just blowing smoke. They've proven it. Imagine making money like that and then, if you're at a point in your life where you want to try, GO FOR IT.

i know you said you stopped reading them, but were there any dark romances that hit just right for you? i also struggle a lot with liking the idea of a darker romance, but not wanting to read about the mmc assaulting the fmc and they just fall for them anyway. seems like too many dark romance fall under that and i'm left there like... where was the romance in this??
the only one i read recently was twisted emotions by cora reilly which is a mafia romance/arranged marriage. it's dark-ish? like *trigger warning* the fmc was abused as a child, but the mmc had zero to do with that and instead helped her heal. not a great difference, but considering the mmc wasn't the abuser i guess that's a win? i will say i did enjoy this book, but it's one of those MY GOD HIRE AN EDITOR books because i believe the author is german and there's some major spelling/grammatic errors. it was pretty blatant so that sucked, but i did enjoy the characters and i thought she did a good job (as a survivor of child abuse/SA myself) writing a survivor healing and dealing with their trauma and trusting their partner to bring them joy during sex and intimacy.
Again, beneath the cut
I have such a love/hate relationship with dark romance because I'm not opposed to dubious consent (obviously). I think my issue is a lot of dark romance thinks it can only be dark if there is this element of emotional abuse that I find difficult to deal with, especially if its not resolved.
So like, the MMC kidnaps her, or he won't let her leave his home without watching her 24/7 because she belongs to him, to the point that he controls her phone, her finances, her friends and everything else. And I think a dark romance book could start that way but there should be growth, you know? You can be possessive and also trusting? Like why CANT she leave without an escort, why do you need to watch her 24/7? Why can't she work if she wants to, why does the FMC have to give up her autonomy entirely in order for the romance to work. I don't like that and I know a lot of people do which is fine, but it doesn't feel like a happy ending.
I also don't like the arrogant "im so hot i could have anyone i want and youre lucky im even looking at you" MMC that seems so popular in dark romance. What happened to being pathetic? What happened to being down bad for one woman to the point youd ruin the world for her, you know? You can be a piece of shit and still wet and pathetic, like sir you can really have it all.
I think my issue is the MMC is never required to grow or change and its the FMC who accommodates him and in the end decides she actually likes this/prefers it and so he is never required to compromise or alter his life for her to prove he loves her. Again. Bring back sopping wet men.
And finally, I wish dark romance would center on themes outside of just sexual assault. I am weary of the "hes so hot that sexual assault is forgivable" like girl c'mon. What if we just leaned into the murder, example, you know? That's enough to give ANYONE pause, if I was dating a man and found out he was killing people regardless of the justification I might have some thoughts like "what the fuck" and "hello 911?"
And if he is murdering its always this backflipping justification for why thats okay like i don't know, maybe we just. Call it what it is, ya feel? He's killing people, thats wild. No need to add morality to it, maybe he just likes to blow off steam by killing strangers.
Anyway all this to say no, I haven't read anything I really liked outside of fanfiction. Maybe I'll give your recommendation a shot and see how I feel about it.

Twisted Cravings by Cora Reilly {Book Review}
Tumblr media
-------------------------------------------
GENRES: Romance, Contemporary, Dark, New Adult, Adult, Mystery, Fiction
rating: ⭐️⭐️ out of 5 Stars
------------------------------------------- As the youngest brother of the notorious Falcone clan, Adamo grew up surrounded by blood and violence. Drugs soon became his way of coping. Becoming a Made Man like his brothers was his destiny but never his passion. When he becomes the organizer of his family’s successful illegal street races and one of their thrill-seeking drivers, he finally asserts his own path in the harsh mafia world. His purpose isn’t the only thing Adamo discovers on the fuel-soaked roads he calls home… Dinara Mikhailov is the only female race driver and hard to ignore. Not only because of her flaming red hair and ruthless driving style, but also because the Bratva princess is allowed to drive in enemy territory. Soon Adamo and she find themselves entangled in a passionate game that goes beyond the race track. Yet, both haunted by events in the past, their dark cravings put everything on the line. As what they crave the most, comes with a brutal price. (From Goodreads)
-------------------------------------------
I didn't like this book! It had its strong points, one of them being the plot twist which was freaking amazing! and the few family scenes but that was it for this book.
I'm honestly sick of Adamo's bullshit! I really loved Adamo in the first few books! and was looking forward to when he will have his book, but, in the last two books, he started to get on my nerves with his rebellion phase. I was on his side in the beginning but, his continued butting head with Remo is frustrating TBH! and this book was the cherry on top! Adamo actually says in this book that his problem with Remo is because he sees himself easily becoming like him. How he atually is fascinated with the Torture and what Remo does, and if he lets himself he is going to enjoy it! Wait, what? you want to tell me that Adamo butted his head with Remo because he can see himself becoming like Remo and enjoying it but at the same time doesn't want to, so he was acting like he was disgusted! that when he killed for the first time, his torment because he didn't feel guilty not because he was actually guilty?!! YOU WANT TO TELL ME THAT THE BABY I WANTED TO BE PROTECTED IN ALL THOSE BOOKS WAS JUST AN ACT?!! you dear author destroyed his character for me, if you made it as if he went through Dinara's plan because it was the right thing to do, you would've made him a hero. but no you needed to kill his innocent image to make him a blood-thirsty killer!
I don't hate Dinara, she just didn't click with me!
this book except for the little excitement about the plot twist was boring! I just wanted to get finished with it. the romance didn't move me at all, and I wasn't invented into it! I'm sad to say this was the worst book of all the other Cora Reilly books I've read!

Did you have some romance novels that stood out to you this year? Or certain authors you’d recommend?
Hey Anon!
I love this ask! There's a ton of different niches in romance which was something I hadn't really thought about when I started thinking of making the switch to writing it. I miss jumping around and playing with different genres in Jonsa but, if you want to make money, it's best to establish a pen in one of the niches people are reading and crank out the books. (*whispers* this chic loves making money for writing)
However, even though I found one that appealed to me and dove into it headfirst, I've enjoyed checking out some varied stuff when it comes to reading.
Here's a few I loved:
Priest by Sierra Simone - it's older (released in 2015) but damn it's hot while also having complicated characters and their 'forbidden' love story.
Give Me More by Sara Cate - It's part of a series but this was my favorite of them so far. Threesome stuff isn't for everyone but what you think is going to start off as a h0twife story is much more involved than that and had some great personal growth for all three main characters.
Blind Side by Kandi Steiner - college/sports and fake dating all wrapped into one. I've mostly read characters who are past college age this past year but I really enjoyed this one.
Pippa Grant's The Girl Band Series, especially Mister McHottie and The Stud in the Stacks. She's writes hilarious, whip-smart romcom.
The Takeover by TL Swan- lots of her books are loaded with drama with a capital D (which is sometimes great and sometimes too much for my tastes) but this one made me laugh out loud so many times and I really loved the female lead. I loved the guy too but wanted to strangle him a time or two :)
By Fate I Conquer by Cora Reilly - I love (most of) her mafia romances and this latest one was really a great dark romance with some Romeo and Juliet vibes. The niche is violent though so not for everyone.
Anything and everything by Olivia Hayle! I absolutely love her style of intelligent, steamy, banter-filled, city-life romances. I've read them all and wound up buying several of them.
Thanks for the indulgent ask, Anon! *flies off to reread some faves*

What makes a good Dark Romance Book?
Is there a good dark romance book or there's no good dark romance book? If you're just scrolling down and you somehow saw this post because we have the same tags, then please have the time to read my thoughts.(please keep in mind on what I ask) this started when I was craving to read a dark romance book, I wanted to have a big bad villain or main love interest to fall in love with FMC. So I decided to go search it with my trusty app "TikTok", there were so many book recommendations for dark romance themes but the one that was mostly recommended was "Haunting Adeline" by H.D Carlton. I was interested with the short summary and I was ready to read it, but when I was minding my business I saw this one post who was talking about what dark romance was supposed to be, talking about how they were supposed to be a morally grey mmc or a vampire mmc. And when I check the comment section a lot of people hated Haunting Adeline. I was really conflicted on what I was doing and reading since I was diagnosed with depression last year(my mom says whatever your reading it can affect your thoughts and mood) and I was doing better and happier and I didn't want to waste those efforts just to go back being a pit of messy sadness and anger. So what I did like any sane person do was to avoid reading it, I still have it just not read it. I was really conflicted on what was going through me and I should start avoid reading dark romances, however there was that ever longing of having a dark villainous love interest fall for the Female lead and see her as their love of their life and their vulnerability. So I started asking google if there was any good dark romance books and I received nothing, i mean sure it'll show dark romance books but not GOOD dark romance books. If you're confused on what I mean here's my category:
Good Dark Romance:
Good dark romance books are where the main love interest is mysterious, have gone through a very traumatic past and morally grey philosophy. They're like an anomaly you want to discover and hold it onto your own hands; here are my top picks that I think are good dark romance books. Trilogy of "Blood of my Monster" by Rina Kent and "Sweet Temptation" by Cora Reilly
Dark Romance:
From what I understand from dark romance enthusiast, they're are willing to kill, destroy, blackmail and etc. just to get the girl.(for those who read Haunting Adeline please tell me if I'm mistaken but did the main love interest rape someone or rape the female lead? Cause that has me spiralling my Insanity.)
Thoughts:
What I want to read for a dark romance story is like "Crossed" by Emily Mcintire the never ever after series. I want a man who's willing to kill and sacrifice for the girl, bend and break himself to shreds until he gets his happily ever after. I just want to read a dark romance book in a people's standards, cause I felt that in order to live the fullest of your life is to be part of the society. You have to be where people feel comfortable and satisfied, cause if you don't you're just someone who's called crazy. I know how to separate myself with fiction and reality and sometimes my depression gets me because of the story but I'm able to bounce back and realize these are just works of fiction(and I knew what I was getting myself into). And I've always wanted to feel be part of the world or a community who feel the same I feel and not criticize unless correct me if I'm wronged. A lot of people say it's not a good excuse to use "Oh it's a dark romance book" and it's not right for young teenagers or adults reading this, and I agree but didn't the author wright tags or warn readers how it's for mature audiences before reading? Isn't a person fault for reading it regardless of the warnings? If a person wants to read a dark romance book and read through the trigger warnings but enjoyed the book shouldn't the person just relax and love the book? It doesn't mean they support the mmc doings or romanticize it but rather they just love the idea of it. It's also the person fault if they read the book regardless of the warnings and started hating the book. It's not the book fault but the person themselves, the author realize how gory and mature for this to be published in public and wrote down trigger warnings how it's only for mature audiences ONLY. And Im just scared that people are just going to hate this post on what I made when all I wanted was to hear a person thoughts on what they deem is a good dark romance story for them.

I’ve never watched any of the Godfather movies or watched HBO’s The Sopranos, and I’ve always loathed the way that the mafia and organized crime is glamorized in pop culture. When I learned that “mafia romance” had become a popular sub-genre of romance novels in the past decade, I was disgusted. I had no intention of ever reading a word of it.
But then I read Bound by Vengeance by Cora Reilly in search of dubcon/noncon-leading-to-love and I liked it so much that I read her other twenty mafia romances set within the same universe.
I’ve read mafia romance novels by other authors since then and now I find that I don’t care that they’re unlawful and evil men as long as they love their women and treat them well. I tell myself it’s not really different from the pirate sub-genre of romance novels that were popular in the 1990s when I was first started reading romance novels.

By Virtue I Fall by Cora Reilly
Sins Of The Fathers book 3
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my first read by this author and I loved it! I loved the characters I loved the forbidden love the drama and the sexy times there was also heartache and emotions I love the mafia princess falling for her bodyguard trope and this one was nicely done especially with there age difference I loved the drama the angst this was definitely a beautiful story about loving someone you’re not supposed to the forbidden aspect was delicious I’ll definitely be reading from Cora Reilly backlist !
By Virtue I Fall, the highly anticipated and jaw-dropping dark mafia standalone romance from USA Today bestselling author Cora Reilly, is live now!
Love is an inconvenience Anna Cavallaro doesn’t have time for.
She only has one goal: to become a fashion designer. Chicago’s elite already copies her style religiously, not least because she’s the daughter of the city’s notorious mafia boss.
When she’s accepted at a world-famous fashion institute in Paris, her father’s condition is to take her bodyguard along.
Anna definitely wouldn’t mind a few weeks of no-strings-attached fun with her brooding protector.
Santino Bianchi became the Outfit’s enforcer because he liked the thrill of the hunt and kill.
Babysitting his capo’s daughter is an honorable assignment he can’t refuse. His thoughts about Anna? Not so honorable.
Santino’s ignored Anna’s persistent flirting for years. Now, far away from home boundaries begin to blur. But Santino doesn’t have any intention to be the reason for a failed engagement and the ensuing scandal.
A summer fling in Paris.
Only two things stand in Anna’s way.
Santino’s iron will.
And…her fiancé.
Fall in love today!
