Ohhh! So the post with the “beau but Star Wars” is from critical role :3 she’s such a cool character and you reblogged a sw fjord from the same show as well :3 makes me wanna draw them all for the au… I think the character caduceus Clay would make a swag Jedi…
my critical role knowledge is absolutely minimal, all the honor goes out to phi-guy, the op of those posts. that being said, i think caduceus would make such a nice jedi healer !! he has just the right sort of vibe for that

♔ Creative banality—
Mostly, I write headcanons, meta, snippets, and work on fanfics. I have the special talent of starting off hilarious and full of fun, then somehow everything I do take a left-turn to a forest of angst.
&—; Headcanons—more SW Clones. &—; Clonely Headcanons—Clone headcanons. &—; SW Meta—yep. &—; Clonely Meta—Just for Clones. &—; Snippets—Little ficlets and things. &—; Fics—Little ficlets and things. &—; Writing—Headcanons, snippets, Meta, Fics... kind of catch-all.

Tumblr media
♔ "Stay calm, what's the procedure!?" Tags/Triggers/Squicks: (Rules, Guide, Requests)
In general, I try to make as little demands as possible on others. Tags:
&—; TAG ALL SHIPS (e.g. #Obirex and #Rexwalker) — Q: "Why is this important?" — A: This allows for content to be filtered or browsed. &—; Tryp*phobia (small holes, etc.) &—; Major Character Death &—; Bad Batch Season 2
&—; Content Warning Tags:
Overall, I do not tag for many cw warnings, aside from ships or discourse, not unless asked. (I still retain the right to politely decline.) These are the cw tags I do use: — #cw deep sea; for sea creatures. Will be used for visual mediums, only. — #cw shell mollusks (shelled squishy things.) — #cw trypophobia: sea things do this a lot, or there is something that itches this phobia—OR—I know that if I wasn’t expecting it, it would bother me or worse... trigger me. Funfact, did you know that trypophobia is a spectrum?
&—; Mutual Breaking
— If I am mutual with someone and it is broken on the other side, I take that as a boundary to cut off communication. So, I will unfollow, block, and keep my distance on tumblr and elsewhere—including Discord. This may seem extreme and maybe it is. But I don't want to live guessing if someone doesn't want to retain contact with me. There are too many guessing games on the internet.
Tumblr media
&—; Critical Content:
Any content written that may come-off as critical of fandom interests will be tagged #[subject] critical.E.g. #rexwalker critical. NOTE: I tend to be overly zealous and cautious about this. So, even if I am simply stating that I do not ship something, I will tag it as critical.
♔ — EXTRAS I do ROLEPLAY for those interested...
— Captain Rex, can double-up or trade for ships. — 3rd person. Novella/Literate — Discord 1x1, maybe groups. — DM for more.
Tumblr media
♔ — Fandom Spouses: What is a fandom spouse? This is a partner in crime, a buddy of banality, a blorbo consultant; someone who talks at length about their beloved character, and listens to me in kind. They are a great resource for me to turn to if I have questions about said character or the meta the focuses on them. They are often a fandom best friends, though rarely the only one. There may be others in private spaces that fit this role, but they may have a much more private presence online.
— Obi-Wan @ninjigma (Obi-Wan, and over-all Jedi greatness.) — Anakin @spacingstars (Anakin, Anakin, Anakin, Anakin.)

Hot take: the term Xanatos Gambit is badly named. David Xanatos doesn’t do Xanatos Gambits, he either makes plans that involve a very simple backup plan, a silver lining, or just says “Well, I’m still a billionaire”. None of his plans are as convoluted as one (1) episode of Leverage.

Started writing a Star Wars fanfic set in the old republic. It’s about a boy who begins his education in the Sith academy on Korriban.
The body of the text has some expressions of bullying and abuse in it, but not much more than you’d find in your average YA novel, but make sure to check out the trigger warnings for the short italicized sections in the beginnings of most chapters. There’s some seriously dark stuff in there.

Critical R&B question: does Cats the musical exist? If so, is it a magicat (or generally feline) production, or like people in costumes pretending to be actual cats? Was the 2019 movie as horrifying to them as it was to us? ... I got Memories stuck in my head and started thinking (perhaps inevitably) about Catra 😔 I don’t imagine it’d ever come in-fic since musicals clearly aren’t their bag but. Inquiring minds want to know
I'm beginning to wonder if you're actually... Clare-voyant. -gets hit with a cosmic brick-
Ok, so it doesn't come up in R&B, but it is actually a side detail in a different modern au I've had as a side project. In the au Catra and Adora are both professors that have been together for 16 years since reuniting at the Olympics, but none of their coworkers know they're together because Shadow Weaver's a dean at the college and engineered their breakup when they were teens. Adora's a recent addition to the staff because she was getting her phd while also working as a physical rehab trainer, and now the college Catra works at is the only place that can afford to hire her (and she has some ulterior motives for taking the job.) Shadow Weaver is retiring at the end of the year, so they just have to keep their obvious attraction under wraps for that long until they're in the clear. Easier said than done.
But the reason why Cats comes up is because Catra's only friend on campus (she keeps people at arms length so she doesn't invite SW retribution) is DT, who is an engineer with a passion for theater who essentially can never be fired because their amazing sets always make a guaranteed profit for the school and thus they're immune to SW's menace. The two of them needle each other relentlessly but still consider the other a good friend. Anyway, DT has a habit of changing Catra's contact info in their phone depending on how they feel about her currently and when they're very annoyed they make it Cats (2019) and Catra's only response is, "What the fuck did I do to deserve this?" When they're no longer mad they'll switch it to Cats (1998) or Cats (The Good One) to let her know she's in the clear.
Anyway, in-universe Cats is kind of a subject of intense debate, because on the one hand the universe equivalent of Andrew Lloyd Webber has stated they are supposed to be regular cats, but that also means magicats would be inherently suited to play it. But some people argue that it would be racist casting magicats in the roles of cats (implying they're animals), while a lot of magicats in theater point out that there aren't a lot of roles written specifically for them and that barring them from doing ones so well suited to them (especially when it's non-magicats making that call) has some unfortunate implications in and of itself. The one thing everyone can agree on is the 2019 movie is horrible. And while that won't come up in R&B, pretty much all of my modern aus share the same overall setting, so what applies to the fake enemy professors au also applies there.
Oh and also the 1998 recording was an all magicat cast, which is part of why it's so universally loved.

Hey what do you think of all the speculation that AFO is Deku’s dad, or the other theory that Shimura is also Deku’s grandma and that his mom is Kotaro’s sister?
There’s people comparing his mom’s and Shimura’s hair and face saying they’re similar, and apparently All Might said Deku’s mom reminded him of his master. And then as for AFO being Deku’s dad, there’s just too much to dive into there but I assume you’ve seen some of the theories surrounding that. Do you think any of those are true?
No. In fact, I dislike these theories and think there is little to no basis within the text itself for such theories. I'd go so far as to say I think they would be bad writing. :P (Sorry! I get why people enjoy conspiracy theories like these, but clearly I have Feelings about it. So I shall let them loose!)
For the evidence cited--the visual similarities--it’s the same author, not necessarily genetics. It’s not really evidence. Yes, I know people cited visual similarities with Dabi and Shouto/Endeavor, but also keep in mind that we were invited by the text to ask these questions by Dabi’s unique “how sad, Todoroki... Shouto” and his characterization.
We’re not invited to ask that about Deku. There’s literally nothing in the story that makes me think Inko would have a dark affair with AFO, or that she has any sort of concern about her husband (because she stated she was married and nothing we’ve seen in the story challenges that) being a bad dude.
There’s also nothing in the story to suggest Nana abandoned two kids; literally, there’s nothing. It’s always just “her son,” who is Kotaro. Kotaro also knew about his heritage; it makes no sense thus for Inko not to, and if she does know, it makes no sense for her not to tell Deku when she encourages his heroic dreams (she just also wants him to be safe).
On writing level... the whole crux of what makes Deku interesting as a character (or at least provides potential) is that he has no place in the story besides the one he decides to make for himself. He wants to be a hero, and it is that pure desire that the story rewards with the inheritance of OFA. If this is removed, if Deku is some sort of bloodline relative, then his role loses its thematic purpose of an everyman.
It also doesn’t make a lot of sense when we already have Dabi, Hawks, Shigaraki, a traitor, and possibly even Mr. Compress going against their heroic or villainous heritage, whatever that means. Deku deciding for himself his role in the story is already present in the text; he doesn’t need a legacy for this. It adds nothing new to his character. He already knows heritage doesn’t make a person, so why add this?
As for why it would be terrible writing... see, a lot of these theories’ write-u[p will mention that Horikoshi is inspired by Star Wars! Indeed he is, but leaving aisde that inspired doesn’t mean rewriting AU SW, let me use the Star Wars argument against the theory. We... already know how people perceive an everyman character suddenly being retconned as a famous person’s child, and it is not critically well-received at all (see: Rey Palpatine, which Horikoshi is surely aware of since he like, named a hospital in his stories as homages to Rey’s home planet Jakku). It’s been pretty much universally panned as bad writing. And still, it was better done than any reveal of Deku’s father being Important would be, because the narrative did set Rey’s desire to know her heritage as a main conflict (as it set up Luke’s desire to know his father in the Original Trilogy).
Questioning about his dad has never been brought up by Deku. Not once. We’ve never had Deku wondering about his father, thinking that he’d never met him. We’ve never had him missing the man, unlike Touya, where we had increasing buildup about a missing/dead son in the Todoroki family. Horikoshi could so easily have put that in there during Deku’s interactions with Todoroki and the entire Todoroki family, Bakugou taunting him, even Deku’s response to All Might saying he’ll be a father figure.
But there’s not one moment like this. If the story isn’t setting it up as a mystery, I don’t think it’s likely to be a big twist.
What I think is a more interesting twist on Deku’s father is if the man couldn’t cope with having a son who was quirkless and de facto abandoned him, albeit perhaps through a societally acceptable reason such as a job transfer or something (culturally it’s also not that unusual for a father to take work in another city/even country and live apart from a family). If this is the case, it could actually be used to make Deku question himself and his father’s/society’s estimation of worth.
However, I’m not even sure it’ll be that important. But it’s the best use I can think of for Deku’s dad in the story, especially since we have All Might already saying he is acting as Deku’s father figure. Making Deku’s father a sh*tty representation of society, a bland blasé societal good guy who’s actually a bad dad, has much more potential than Deku wrestling with a villainous legacy.

So around this time last year I made this account, mostly after getting extremely hyperfixated on the sw expanded universe thanks to an amazing Edge of the Empire campaign I got to be a part of.
Vagrant Stars lasted for 3 years, the longest and most intense game i'd ever been a part of. My gank thief Spear got to complete their entire character arc and made it through to the end, I'm pretty proud of that little bastard.
It's been kinda obvious after the campaign ended early this summer my hyperfixation moved on from star wars to more general tabletop- standard 5e dnd, critical role, shadowrun, vampire the masquerade, whatever.
I'd love to post more swtor stuff eventually, but right now it's a non existent interest to myself and friends so it's not likely I'll finish any other classes or the expansions unless it cycles back into my interests some time.
All my sw ocs still exist, just in a bunch of aus now lmao
Anyway just thought to give y'all a heads up if anyone's still on tumblr? Lmao I'll probably just use this account for tabletop resources

Good Things in 2019
@theputterer and @the-strongest-stars tagged me in the awesome annual end-of-year Good Things meme! I’ve done this in 2018 & 2017 and always think it’s a fun exercise of both reflection and looking forward.
Oh boy, though, my first thought was, what even happened in 2019? (Looking at a calendar helped! It reminded me of a few things I forgot)
It’s been a Rough Year, friends. Between OCD and basically travelling almost every weekend in the latter half of 2019, I am very much ready for a new year and hopefully a new slate.
But this is about the positives!
Personal
Played a lot of Dungeons and Dragons! I am now officially in two campaigns. This year, I endeavored to recruit more women to play, including the wonderful @allatariel. I play both my beloved cleric, Maritsa (who I’ve been playing her years now) and my new character, Noara, a ranger elf with a red panda familiar (yeah, my DM let me do that for funsies, so I could get an animal sidekick but also still try out the Horizon Walker subclass).
Speaking of red pandas, I accomplished my LIFE GOAL of meeting a red panda face-to-face. I got to feed Harriet at the Cincinnati Zoo for 30 minutes. She was adorable.
Completed all my dental work and had a clean bill of dental health two cleanings in a row!
Attended DC’s Around the World Embassy Day event, always fun
Attended Star Wars night at a local library, where I got to participate in a short demo/lesson on how to fence with a lightsaber!
Attended 50th Anniversary Celebration of Apollo 11 / landing on the moon (dude they projected the rocket on the Washington Monument and it looked so cool)
Returned to the NY Ren Faire and upgraded my ren faire garb
Celebrated at THREE friends’ weddings and got to catch up with old friends I hadn’t seen in awhile
Ate ice cream at the Ben & Jerry’s Factory in Vermont
Went to NYCC for the third year in a row. Got to wear 2 costumes this year: a 1920s flapper interpretation of an occamy and my Endor!Leia costume (repeat of 2017). Learned the True Pain of sewing. Created feather shawl for my occamy costume. Learned the True Pain of crafting.
Celebrated one year anniversary with hubbie down where we got married: visited the museum we got married in and actually got a chance to enjoy the exhibits, went to our favorite brunch place down there, got to check out Fleet Week and tour an aircraft carrier and uh... I think it was a missile cruiser?
Went up to PSU for a women’s hockey game for sister’s birthday (made embarrassing HAPPY BIRTHDAY sign for the cameras); also it was an absolutely wonderful fall drive on the way up there
Got to see The Rise of Skywalker in IMAX at the Smithsonian Air & Space Center with the awesome @allatariel! (thank goodness we had each other to get through that movie lol) also got to reuse my Endor!Leia costume. I did my own braids for the first time ever! (usually my talented sister does them) They looked like braids done by a n00b, but I didn’t care because they were passable and I did them myself and that was a Big Thing for Perfectionist Me (to not just... say screw it and undo it and just. give up. but to just let them be as is)
Worked hard at therapy and self care
Got a Sleep Number bed and holy shit let me tell you. i can actually sleep now.
OH! I almost forgot!!! Started playing Assassin’s Creed! I’ve only ever really played the LEGO Star Wars and Harry Potter video games so like. This was big for me.
Writing
Finally finished Learning Curve. TBH I was a bit shocked that this was in fact the only fic I published in 2019. What a travesty.
However! I have been writing
@allatariel & I sat down, overanalyzed You’ve Got Mail, and drafted up the outline for my in-universe AU, something I’ve been dreaming of starting for years. Have about 4300 words so far.
Just under the wire, I did manage to start my NatGeo AU, which I’ve been dreaming of since my honeymoon in Nov 2018
Started editing/revising my original young adult fantasy novel
Poked a little at my epic fantasy pirate travel novel idea
Books
I read exactly one book, Among the Red Stars, which I enjoyed. It’s about women fighter pilots in Russia in WW2. Inspired by real people.
Music
Saw Panic at the Disco! in concert. I went along with my sister. Not like a huge fan, but they put on a pretty fun show!
Saw Waitress on Broadway!! OH MY GOD. And Sara Bareilles was starring in it. Amazing. I freaking love her music (”How does she know / what a heart sounds like?” gahhh). She was so good, and the show was so good. I literally cried all the way through it just because I was so happy to be there, but also because of the content. Man.
Saw Sara Bareilles again, in concert, in Philly. I love her so much.
Television
Finished Critical Role Campaign 1! Oh man, what a ride. Gosh, I love that show. I really need to catch up in C2 now. I’ve started it but I’m only on episode 26 or 27.
I’m not sure whether I finished The Clone Wars in 2018 or 2019. I think it was early 2019. This show was amazing and this was the character development that Anakin Skywalker needed. I love Ahsoka Tano. I cannot wait for the last season.
Finished Rebels!!! AGAIN, what a ride!!! I still love Ahsoka Tano. I also love Hera Syndulla and Sabine Wren. Sabine’s Darksaber arc was fantastic.
The Mandalorian OMG BABY YODA!!! Yes, I have succumbed to the adorableness of Baby Yoda. Most adorable SW character forever. But also just an enjoyable story in general. This, this is how you craft a story. still NOT over the darksaber omg.
The Good Place is continuing to be good. Not as crazy about season 4, but I’m so glad they decided to limit the seasons.
Got my sister to watch Rebels!! And then even a few episodes of The Clone Wars!!! Mwahaha >)
Finally got around to watching The Great British Bake Off, what a sweet show!
OMG I ALMOST FORGOT Anne With an E!!! Gosh what a wonderful wholesome delightful show. No I haven’t watched S3 yet because I am Lawful Good to a fault and just patiently waiting for it to come on Netflix
Film
So, I woefully neglected to mention The Aeronauts in this post about my favorite movies in the 2010s and that was a Mistake. Because I really enjoyed this one
But otherwise probably check out that list. Because I don’t go to the movies that often, actually, and anything I really loved from 2019 is most definitely listed there.
Did I meet my 2019 Goals?
Writing: Fandom
Finish Learning Curve YES
...and How to Lose a Spy in 10 Days Uh, no, not so much
Begin and complete the in-canon universe You’ve Got Mail AU YES, it is begun but no it is not complete
Try to knock out a few other projects on my 30+ SW ideas Umm, I did start / poke at a few things in addition to the YGM and NatGeo AUs, but nothing really “knocked out”
Try my hand at creating more visual fan works (like moodboards/photosets, step 1, learn proper terminology) ahahahah, no.
Writing: Original
Query more agents for my completed original novel YIKES, No. But I wasn’t anticipating that I’d decide to heavily edit/revise my manuscript.
Actually get around to deciding which idea I want to work on next and work on it Yeah, sure, I decided. How nice of past!Liz to make this goal so reachable as “deciding” lol
Reading
Be more supportive in helping my friend run Book Club so that it can actually meet more regularly HA, oops. Book Club died, but kind of in favor of being able to start a second D&D campaign. At least that’s the trade off I’m looking at. I had some OCD-related glasses issues this year that inhibited reading a lot.
Try to read at least one book for myself outside of Book Club lol WELL the one book I read this year was not part of Book Club sooo
Goals for 2020
Writing
I’m not going to make this a completion goal, but instead...
...I’d like to just focus on creating a regular writing schedule/habit. Whatever the project, I just want to make sure I carve out significant time each week just to write. I don’t want to set a specific goal like “x hours a week” for now, but I want to make sure that I am writing each week.
To achieve that (because what are goals without maps):
If the words don’t immediately jump onto the page, then I’m going to try outlining or summarizing. I’m going to let go of overthinking how sentences are phrased, and just pretend I’m describing the story idea to a friend.
That blank page is staring at me and I’m just going to fill it with words no matter what I might think of them!
And I’m going to let everything else expand from there. And see how that works.
Edit my original manuscript
Query more agents re: original manuscript
Look into the idea of perhaps forming or joining a writer’s group for original writing oh gosh that is so scary
Other
Get back into reading
Develop a routine for working out
Eat healthier
Continue focusing on therapy goals
Get around to watching: Black Sails, Mad Max: Fury Road, Arrival
Get better at responding to things in general
Tagging: @allatariel, @magalis, @mythologicalmango, @skitzofreak, @threadsketchier, @brynnmclean, @ruby-red-inky-blue, @siachti and anyone else who sees this and wants to do it!
Happy New Year y’all!

About how long would you say you’ve been rooting for Reylo?
I tend to dive into things intensively, so while I knew there was an intriguing dynamic to Rey and Kylo's TFA interaction and I enjoyed what was teased in TLJ when it came out, I think it was a random wading into Reylo fanfic circa Aug 2019 that really got me into the fandom in a deep way. (Throwback to me thinking: eh maybe I'll give Reylo oneshots a try? And BOOM four months later I'm in a daze wondering how I've read like 80 fics, ended up in a writing discord - shoutout to The Writing Den! - and have five stories cooking in my head at one time.)
I like that the fandom takes what was on film in TLJ and expands the contours of that universe, stretching it into all sorts of configurations that somehow still made sense thematically for what Rey and Ben were going through. Whether that's in the context of warring lawyers (eversoreylo), Kyril Ren and Irena (voicedimplosives), archaeology Rey and Ben (disasterisms), a Harry met Sally AU (slipgoingunder), or Canadian politics (saint_heretical)... the creativity of the fandom and how it grapples with SW themes through all these different lenses of interpretation blows my mind. IMO it shows how SW's story themes can be individually interpreted, yet utterly universal.
What did you think of the way Rise of Skywalker handled Rey and Kylo’s relationship?
It felt like a backstep/retcon to what had happened in TLJ. I think CT and JJ wanted to make certain narrative choices but couldn't fully commit to them for whatever reasons, and the story suffered overall in a big way 'cus of that.
TRoS clearly went into the enemies -> lovers arc but leaned way too far into 'enemies', making the arc to 'lovers' within 2.5 hours way very weirdly paced, so it didn't feel like it was earned. The reaction of the audiences I was in for both screenings validated that. At the first screening, there was awkward laughter because it felt so left-field in the context of the film. In the second screening, the GA people I was watching it with felt 'this is really unnecessary' which I can understand because of the lack of buildup in TRoS to that moment.
Reylo in TLJ was at its best because there was time for it to breathe. I rewatch the force skype scenes often and the complete silence, the subtle acting, and the framing of those scenes, is so unusual and bold for a blockbuster at that level. There was also so much gorgeous subtext in what was going on, you could read into it what you liked, but there was definitely an attraction or a pull there for both characters.
You could tell that Adam and Daisy were delivering equally layered acting work in 9, but it was extremely rushed and weirdly edited. The ensemble could also have been a greek chorus for the audience/a bellwether for how we should be feeling towards Rey and Kylo in 9 but they didn't really utilise them that way and Palpatine ended up overshadowing the entire story as the big bad. The more interesting choice obviously was Kylo as the conflicted big bad and a redemption arc, but maybe Disney just isn't ok with that or was pushing for a different direction.
Overall, 9 made me wish we had more time to live in the push-pull dynamic between these two characters and the longing they have for each other despite all the odds, but luckily we have fanfic and art for that, which is why it's so great. Just a shame the film couldn't line those pieces up well enough for a satisfying landing.
Do you think the film understood why you, and other people, felt like Rey and Kylo had something together? Did it get their chemistry?
I'm sure they understood it on some surface level but CT was the wrong person to write that story imo. And JJ on some level disliked RJ's choices so he was trying to wind it back to the TFA dynamic which was more enemies-enemies with a subtext of them being compelled by each other, but not necessarily with a romantic resolution.
I think it's testament to the intelligence of the fandom that we saw the train tracks being laid in ep8 for a more interesting ending, just that whatever story-wrestling/behind the scenes drama/ego was going on at DLF meant nobody was able to actually able to execute that story with the justice it deserved. Locking out the story group also seems like a huge mistake and would've avoided a lot of the larger plot holes they seem to have ended up with, the dissatisfying Reylo arc in ep9 being just one symptom of it.
What about the handling of Kylo’s redemption? Was it something you had to think through in your stories?
How I envision Kylo/Ben's redemption and Rey's response to it is summarised by a lot of the fic that's already out there! And in the fanfic thread I've pinned on my Twitter. e.g. Starstuff by voicedimplosives, Morning by disasterisms, Astrometric Binaries by pontmercy44, Tactical Surrender by Trebia... there are a lot of ways it could have gone. A recent comic (08 Jan?) by Miss Bliss is also a great example and she distilled it down to 15 simple panels, not to say she simplified the ethics of the redemption arc of course.
The biggest effect that TRoS had on me as an aspiring creator/writer is because the film DIDN'T give me the redemption arc, I'm interested to explore how that looks like in fanfic. So maybe that will become a theme in my writing. Let's see!
I'm still laughing about how they yeeted Ben into the pit though. Can't believe those leaks were actually true.
What did you think of where Rey landed at the end? There had been a lot of excitement around Star Wars having a female protagonist. Do you think she lived up to the promise of her character?
A lot of the discourse has already covered this but my take is: in TLJ Rey was the centre of the story, all of her actions were driving the plot and it was a female-centric story about incredible themes like self-discovery, belonging, loyalty, 'lightness', 'darkness', attraction, sexuality. And TLJ was very nuanced in presenting how Rey's role shaped the overall story, the symbolism in the film (all of which had meaning or at least tried to), and her clear growth through it.
With TRoS it felt like her needs took a backseat and were kind of ancillary to the action of what was happening. Or that she was a lot more of a passenger to the story. I guess that's how I would sum it up. If I think back to how TRoS ended I don't think there was a satisfactory character conclusion for ANY of them... and don't even get me started on how they did Rose completely dirty.
There’s criticism of the movie that argues it’s akin to “fan fiction” and that is has too much fan service. As fans and fan-fiction writers, how do you react to that?
It doesn't actually bother me that much. I think it comes from a place of negative stereotyping and misunderstanding of what fandom is all about, especially for the Reylo community – because apparently believing in romance, redemption, and love is meaningless, simple, and weak.
The people that are in the fandom and know it well know that the fandom has a lot of diverse views in it, different perspectives, and some of the most startlingly intelligent and thoughtful people across the spectrum including creators, readers, analysts, community organisers etc.
The fact that there's a WHOLE ECOSYSTEM with fanfic and fan art and discord servers and gift exchanges and comedy memes and metas and all of this stuff just enhances my enjoyment of it overall. And it's an ecosystem that despite critics' attempts to dismiss it since 2015, continues to thrive.
I challenge those skeptics to look at some of the novel-length Reylo work on Ao3, the detailed sketches and concept art, the hours of thoughtful podcasting and REVIEWS OF FANFIC and say this community's not worthy of credit or attention. Even if you don't like Reylo, there's a discussion worth having about why people want to engage with it on a deep level and the transformative work that's come out of it.
We are doing this for free. Out of enjoyment and fun and discovering meaning. The level of artistry and engagement in this fandom is really astounding in that way.
I wish people would talk more about *that* side of the Reylo fandom rather than dismissing it as 'fluffy romance 50 shades in space y'all are rabid crazy' or whatever.
TLDR the question of whether Rey and Kylo have/had toxic and abusive dynamics is an interesting one to ask and we need to continue having the discussion, because from my POV it wasn't 100% clear cut from TFA, and it evolved in TLJ and in TRoS. BUT it should be situated in the context of the broader fandom and the range of views within it, + the many other interpretations of the Reylo relationship through fic and art, which The Atlantic's article missed.
Are you still writing any Star Wars fanfic? Tell us about it! (Don't forget your Ao3 handle!)
I'm late to the game but am interested in writing SW fanfic as a way of exploring my own capacity to write and create, so yes! Did my first drabble in mid December and have a few ideas cooking, the first which looks like a two-chapter modern AU oneshot. Watch this space…

15 Day SWTOR OC Challenge
Day 12: Alternate Universes: Do I have any AUs for them? What’s different, and what’s the same?
Arro: I think up new stories for Arro every day! A lot of them allow him a quiet, private life with Lana and some close friends. Some involve crossovers into different titles or settings (Medieval fantasy, Dragon Age, Diablo, and even real earth as an ordinary human). Most of these are just images in my head of him looking around markets, browsing through stores, or brandishing a blade (always has a blue blade). But there are two AUs that I have given some serious thought to. 1.) In a Universe where Lana isn’t Cipher Nine, and where Theron, T7, and Senya are killed, thereby robbing Lana of her most critical allies and skills. Ten years after Arro was placed in Carbonite, Arcann manages to find and crush the last of the powers that would have participated in the Alliance. Lana is left alone in her search, and at the doorstep of despair. After years of persuasion, Koth convinces her that she doesn’t owe Arro the rest of her life. She marries Koth and the two live on some backwater world in a galaxy that has been stamped into the ground. Five years later, a bombing by bandits destroys their home, with their two year old daughter inside. Zakuul Knights arriving too late to save her, but when they clear the rubble, Lana discovers that her daughter has been protected by an Astral Projection of Arro (she can tell it’s not a ghost). The Knights are shocked too, and most of them know exactly where to find him. They are pretty done with Arcann by now, so they aid Lana in breaking Arro’s box out of Zakuul without anyone being the wiser. Arro wakes up. Fifteen years have passed and everything he knows has changed. The Republic is a fractured dictatorship, the Empire is now several warring states and the Galaxy is bankrupt. The Jedi are gone, his friends are gone, and his wife has understandably moved on (Koth is kinda aggressively assertive here, perhaps with good reason). Arro leaves Lana’s once he has recovered enough. He doesn’t ask her to come with him, and she affirms to Koth that she has a different life now; one with Koth and their daughter. Koth does note how that hurts her but he’s satisfied (she’s made her choice, and it’s in his favor). Arro travels around, searching for a new purpose in a Galaxy that moved on beyond him. I hate myself for putting not only Arro but also Lana through this post-apocalyptic hell of a story. 2.) Years after ending the Zakuul war, a new cult called the Order of Zildrog rises up. They head to the planet Malachor, repository of Sith Knowledge and artefacts, where they corrupt an old Terraforming Alchemical device and set it to destroy the Galaxy. They lock the controls so that only Arro can stop it. If he saves the galaxy, an obvious stasis trap is set to hold him for eternity. If he refuses, the Terraformer will destroy the Galaxy one star system at a time. This was meant to be the “Storm” from Satele’s prophecy but it had me even more depressed than the previously mentioned AU. This would lead to an AU in SW: Rebels, where this corrupted Terraformer would be what Maul was after, but finds long dead (haha!) and frees a Jedi instead. After spending four thousand years in a prison, Arro laughs at the Rebel Alliance Councillors’ call to his Sense of Duty (remember the guy who also played Anderson of TV show Sherlock? He’s the guy I picture making the demand in a childish manner) . Arro has sacrificed enough for the Galaxy. He might overthrow Palpatine just to prove he can (as he is, to his dismay, called the Bane of Empires, so what’s one more Empire?)
Akahte has several AUs. In one, she successfully retrieves her family from the Space Station, then stages her death. Kai’rene helps cover the last of her tracks and placate the skeptical Darths Marr and Vowrawn. Akahte reaches the Jedi, through Kai’rene’s old friend Jedi Master Timms. The Jedi are moved by her circumstances and offer her a quiet retirement anywhere she chooses. She chooses the Kalikori village on Tython. While here, she also shares her knowledge on the Force, and her own insights and theories, which are kept for study by Masters only. In another, she eventually accepts the role of Empress when most of the problem Councillors (Ravage, Mortis, Rictus) die off. With Kai’rene as her Champion, and with the backing of Darths Marr, Vowrawn, and Acina, she turns the Empire into a far less cruel, meritocratic society. She backs Prowle’s attempts to bury the hatchet with the Jedi, and both Orders learn to coexist, with the Sith definition of their codes drastically altered so that they are no longer mindless warmongers. Under her, the Empire becomes a paradise and a center for culture, arts, learning, and healing. She goes on to become the greatest Sith to have ever lived.

SW AU - Fate of the Master Chapter 18
<- Previous Chapter
Ahsoka herded the Skywalker family onto the ship. She'd been adamant none of them were getting involved with the Death Star situation until they had figured out how to work things out amongst themselves. She and the akul were coming, she'd claimed, purely as mediators and protection. Anakin was pretty sure Bail wouldn't have let Leia leave if Ahsoka didn't go along. Obi wan had offered to come too, but Bail had begged him to stay and help get information about the Death Star. Ahsoka had assured them both she could handle any issues that came up. "If it came to it," she had said, "I'll sic the akul on them."
Anakin didn't know where they were going or what she had in mind. All she'd say was that she had two destinations. And that the ghost crew were on standby to lend a hand at the second one. Assuming they survived the first.
The first couple days of the trip passed relatively quietly. Luke and Leia spent much of it talking between themselves or playing holochess. Anakin spent a lot of time meditating to emotionally prepare himself for the scars that were going to be ripped open. And Ahsoka spent most of her time on the bridge staring out at the stars racing by or meditating herself. They would talk a little bit, but she wouldn't give any clues about where they were going. At first she'd kept encouraging him to try and talk to his kids, but after a while she gave up.
By the fifth day, they were all getting a little tired of being cramped on the ship and tensions were starting to rise.
Anakin walked in on Luke showing Leia how to use the force, and he couldn't help but smile. Although they both stopped when they saw him. He found himself aching to train them, but they'd need to trust him first. Instead of forcing his presence on them he joined Ahsoka on the bridge with a deep sigh.
"I'm not sure this is a good idea." He said to her. She was sitting with her eyes closed. The akul near her feet. "They don't even want to be in the same room with me, not that I blame them, but how are we supposed to talk? Through the wall?"
"Maybe that's not such a bad idea," she laughed softly.
"You're not helping." He said with frustration.
"What do you want me to do?" She asked opening her eyes at last and looking at him.
"I don't know. Even when Padmé was pregnant, I never thought about what being a dad would mean. And now, after everything that has happened, coming into parenthood when they're teenagers... it's frightening. I never had a dad. And the closest role model I had was the most evil person in the galaxy."
"Would telling you to trust your instincts help?" She asked.
            "Probably not." He replied.
"You first started taking care of me when I was a teenager. How did you approach it?"
"By the skin of my teeth." He said. "I spent half the time just trying to keep up with you. And the other half, trying to make sure you didn't get yourself killed."
"Okay, maybe I'm not the best example, but you did just fine with me. You talked me through things, you let me figure things out. You showed me how to learn from my mistakes. And when I wasn't driving you crazy, you loved me."
"I loved you even when you were me driving crazy." He said. “Probably more.”
She smiled at that. "Well maybe... that's where you need to start."
            "By driving them crazy?"
"No, by loving them even when they are driving you crazy." She said playfully bumping him on the arm. "Think about what you wanted when you were their age. What you wished Obi wan would do or say, and start with that."
 ---
It was early evening when they landed on Naboo. Ahsoka admittedly enjoyed Anakin's surprise that this was where they had been headed. But she could also sense the anxiety in him. She'd chosen Naboo as their first stop because of Padmé. Where she was taking them, she hoped, would keep them from killing each other. Which, terrible as it sounded, was a real danger.
Leia had an attitude, and really no desire to have any kind of a relationship with Anakin. Luke wanted a relationship with him, but was scared. Add the influence from his sister and it was a more volatile mix than she liked. Anakin wanted to be a good dad, but he was afraid to give in to the emotions and he was struggling to overcome his past. So she'd figured that Padmé was the one common ground they all had and they needed to start somewhere. She sincerely hoped that with Padmé looking down on them, it would be enough to keep Anakin from letting his anger get the better of him.
When they got to her planned destination, she turned on them. "Okay," she said, they all looked at her. "Senator Organa talked to the Queen, who was nice enough to grant us access to this place. But there are ground rules: do not destroy anything, do not kill each other, and none of you are coming out until you've worked it out." She pulled some cuffs out of her bag, "and I swear, I will put these force binders on all of you if I have to." They nodded a little scared of her. Good, now we're getting somewhere.
"What is this place?" Luke asked.
            "You'll see." She answered vaguely.
"You know, there were probably plenty of dark rooms on Alderaan you could've locked us in." Leia sassed.
Ahsoka didn't satisfy her with a response. She just turned around and unlocked the padlock with the key she'd been given by the groundskeeper. The door opened but the room was so dark nobody could tell what it was.
"In you go." She said. She shut the door behind them and put the padlock back in place.
"Wait, you're not coming in?" She heard Anakin say from the other side. He sounded a little frantic.
"Good luck," she whispered knowing he couldn't hear her.
"It's so dark in here! You couldn't give us a light?" She heard Leia say.
"You'll get one soon enough," she murmured. And slunk down to the floor and rested her head back on the door. "Your turn, Padmé." She said out loud.
The akul was looking at her curiously. "I know," she whispered to it. "It's going to be a long night." She didn't even hope they'd be best friends by morning, but she was hoping at the very least they'd figure out how to be civil to each other. At least then they'd have a starting point. She pointed to the fields beyond the graveyard. "You might find something to snack on in that direction. Just go easy." She said patting the akul on the head. "I'd go hunt with you, but I have to make sure they live through this." It rumbled and took off in the direction she'd pointed. It stopped to look back at her once and then disappeared in the darkness of night.
 ---
It was pitch black in the room Ahsoka had put them in. He couldn't see either Luke or Leia even though they couldn't be that far away. It was the one thing he admittedly missed about his Vader suit; built-in night vision.
He tentatively tried to walk forward, running into what seemed to be a table height smooth surface. Why had Ahsoka left them in the dark? Did she think if they couldn't see each other, they wouldn't be able to kill each other? He turned to the right and took a few steps forward.
"Ouch! That's my foot!" Came Leia's voice. Great, she already hated him, now he was stepping on her.
"Sorry," he murmured, backing away. He felt like he couldn't do anything right. He was tired of feeling like that. It reminded him of what Ahsoka had said on the ship, ‘remember what you'd wished Obi wan would say or do and start with that...’ the thing he remembered wishing for the most was Obi wan to stop criticizing him so much. He wasn't sure that really applied at the moment.
He tried walking around the other side of the table thing, using it to guide his movement. His eyes were starting to adjust, but there wasn't much to see. Ahsoka would have no problem in here, she had a predator's vision. He managed to stop in time before bumping into Luke.
He knew he should be the one to start the conversation first, but he had no idea what to say. What would they want to hear, or not want to hear? What did he even have in common with them? They both showed force sensitivity, but offering to train them right now, was probably not the best opening line considering how quickly it would lead to questions about what had led him to the dark side.
"So?" He started. Was it safe to talk about the weather? Or this nice room they were locked in and couldn't see? Or dive immediately into the bigger wounds? "I imagine you probably have burning questions. Who wants to start?" He tried to sound nonchalant, but neither Luke or Leia responded immediately. I'll get you for this, Ahsoka.
But just before he could say anything else, a bright light came on outside. Shining through a stained glass window, shedding the room in a soft bluish glow. His breath caught in his throat as he looked up at the window. It was the most beautiful representation of Padmé he'd ever seen. And that's when he realized what he thought was a table was actually a coffin.
"Oh," was all he could say as the emotions overwhelmed him. This was where Padmé had been buried. It was her mausoleum. He had never given much thought to it. He knelt down at the foot, tears rolling down his cheeks before he could stop them.
Luke glanced at him. "Is that?" He started.
"Our mother," Leia finished for him.
"Padmé Neberrie Amidala," Luke read off the plaque. "Princess of Theed, Queen of Naboo, and senator of the Chommell sector and Naboo in the Grand Republic. A true servant of the people. Born 46 BBY. Died 19 BBY. Beloved daughter and sister." He finished reading. "Why doesn't it say wife and mother?" Luke asked.
"Because of me..." Anakin spoke at last. They both turned to look at him. "I was written out of her story because so few people knew we'd been married. And they didn't mention the both of you, to protect you from me."
"Did you love her?" Leia asked.
            "Too much." Anakin replied.
"So if mom was a queen, and you're a princess," Luke said to Leia. "Does that make me a prince?"
"I'm a princess only because I was adopted by a royal family, not because of our mother." Leia said. "I don't think it counts."
"You both are royalty." Anakin said, standing up. "I'm the only one here that never was."
"Was she the queen when you married her?" Luke asked.
"No." Anakin replied. "But she was when I met her."
"Dad..." Leia said and then stammered embarrassed, "I mean... Senator Organa, told me some things about mom, but never anything about the two of you together."
"You can still call him dad, if you want. We all know he deserves the title more than me." At Anakin's statement, Leia softened for the first time since he met her. "Did he tell you anything about me?"
"No," she said, "he said he didn't know much about you."
"Okay, then I'll start at the beginning, I guess. I was a slave on Tatooine. The Hutts sold me and my mother, your grandmother, to a Toydarian named Watto."
"Watto?" Luke interrupted. "I know Watto. He's an old beggar in Mos Eisley. He owned you?"
            "Yes," Anakin replied.
"Wow," Luke said. "I hated being a moisture farmer, but I can't imagine being a slave."
            "Me either." Leia said.
"You probably had slaves." Luke said.
"Of course not!" She replied offended. "We had people that worked for us, but we didn't OWN them. They could come and go. My dad was always against slavery. He even felt the clones were slaves."
"I thought the clones had free will?" Luke said.
"They did, but they were created to serve the republic. If they did not, they were considered deserters and punished." Anakin answered.
"So they were slaves." Luke concluded.
"Yes." Anakin said flinching. He'd never really thought about it. He'd loved each and every one he'd met as an individual in spite of their identical faces. It was easy to forget that even though they seemed to always be ready for a fight, they'd been designed and crafted that way. Designed to want to fight. Designed to follow orders. Designed to kill and be killed. All at the whim of whoever was ordering them around. He made a mental note to apologize to Rex. It suddenly bothered him that as someone who had always been so against slavery he couldn't recognize others in the same position. And that he'd let it, no...  helped it continue after becoming Vader. It made his skin crawl.
He looked at the two faces of his beautiful children and even though their expressions had become less hostile, he felt completely undeserving of their attention and love. And maybe that was why they struggled to see eye to eye. How could he expect them to want him around or love him, when he couldn't even love himself?
"I knew our grandmother had been a slave, but I didn't know you had been one too. What was it like?" Luke asked.
Anakin felt his muscles tightening as his fists balled up. How do you explain that kind of hopelessness and fear? To know what it's like to be a slave, you have to live it. Which is probably why so many senators had never cared enough to put it forward as a priority issue. They could never know what it was like. But to his surprise, Leia was the one that answered.
"You can't just ask him what it was like! It was probably dreadful!"
            "Sorry," Luke said.
"So if you were a slave on Tatooine, way in the outer rim, how did you meet a queen? It doesn't seem likely that she'd take a pleasure trip there." Leia commented.
 ---
As Anakin told them the story of how he met Padmé all those years ago, he felt lighter and lighter. It was painful too, but it made him feel better to get it off his chest. They listened to him and asked questions, and he was surprised at how much easier it was to talk to them in just a short amount of time. It helped to imagine what it must be like each raised in vastly different worlds, each with some information but plenty of missing pieces, finally getting to hear how it all came together.
He was watching them just as closely as they were watching him. And as the time passed, he started seeing little pieces of Padmé in them. He saw pieces of himself in them too, but thankfully not the bad stuff. Leia sometimes reminded him more of Ahsoka than Padmé, but they'd both had more than their fair share of sass. Luke was more mild mannered, and it reminded him of his mother, Shmi.
He'd been really terrified of what Ahsoka had planned for them, but he was finding himself more and more grateful for this opportunity to just sit down and get to know each other. Even though they were in Padmé's tomb, it kind of felt like they actually were a real family. The stained glass image of his late wife, was so realistic, she could have been standing there. He hoped that wherever she was, she was smiling at them.
He made a promise to himself at some point during the night, that no matter how many mistakes he'd made in his life, he would do whatever it took to make it up to them; to give them the best possible life he could.
 ---
Ahsoka paced back and forth outside the mausoleum, she really hoped they were getting along in there and that forcing them together like this hadn't been a fatal mistake. The akul had been gone for half the night, and returned from his hunt with something for her to eat too. It was agitated watching her pace, but she couldn't help it. She sincerely wanted to open the door and check on them, but this was something they needed to figure out without her. Especially if she ended up not sticking around.
The truth was though, if they were going to destroy the Death Star and the empire, and rebuild the Republic, they were going to need the Skywalkers. Even though she'd stopped letting herself be consumed by the fate and destiny talk from before, she couldn't deny the power each one of them possessed. Anakin had once told her that no one person could change the course of the galaxy. But then he'd proceeded to do exactly that. Yes, he'd been the unwitting marionette in a bunch of different people's games, but it was truly his power that tipped the scale, regardless of which side he fought for. He'd been unlike any other Jedi. And he'd been unlike any other Sith. And now he was unlike any other regular person. He would always be special even if he no longer had a role to play as the Chosen One.
And with two children in tow, probably equal in power to him or at least off the charts... this whole family would be a force to be reckoned with. They needed each other. Luke and Leia needed to be trained by him, and he needed something to live for and fight for. Thankfully, the emperor, was dead. And no matter who might try to take his place, the Sith had been shattered too. There wasn't, she hoped, anybody still out there that could try to take advantage of their combined power.
Maul was the only one she could think of, but she doubted any of them, especially once they bonded, would fall for any of his lies. If they got through tonight. Their true training could begin.
Just before the sun rose, she unlocked the padlock and opened the door. She was surprised to find them all huddled together under the window asleep on the floor. There was hope for them yet, she smiled to herself. That went even better than she'd imagined. She almost didn't want to wake them, but one of the conditions of using this place had been to clear out before sunrise so it could open to visitors who wished to pay their respect.
 ---
Anakin felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up. Ahsoka was standing over them. He smiled sleepily at her and tried to get up, only to realize that he was pinned down. Leia was cuddled up behind Luke and they were both resting on his chest. His back was aching, he could only guess that he'd fallen asleep in such a weird position to accommodate them.
Ahsoka stepped back and snapped a holopic of them, "for posterity" she'd said. He just wanted to stick his tongue out at her. He hadn't thought that whatever she'd had planned would work, but once again, she had proven she knew far better than him. How did she just know how to handle all this stuff now? Or was it because of her it was actually working?
He'd been starting to notice that she seemed to be looking for a kind of exit from his life. He really didn't want her to go. He understood what she was trying to teach him, but even if he learned it, he still wanted her there. It was admittedly weird to think that sitting in the very tomb of the person he'd once thought he could never live without. But he had a strong feeling that Padmé would understand. He knew his life shouldn't revolve around another. But was it so wrong to want to be with them? To want them close?
He'd loved Padmé with everything he was. He'd once thought that she was his heart and his own could never beat without her there. But now as he looked up at Ahsoka, this beautiful person inside and out, who for years he'd had a very different kind of relationship with, he was starting to understand that there can be two hearts, they just beat for each other. And he loved Ahsoka, he didn't want to live without her in his life in some way. He was afraid to let her go, but it was more from a knowledge of what his life would be like without her rather than whether or not he would survive.
He never could have imagined all those years ago, how a snippy, little kid, could become so important to him. But then he glanced down first at Leia and then Luke, and he supposed, it wasn't all that surprising. The Jedi had been right, he'd always had attachment issues.
"Ahsoka..." he said, needing to tell her before the kids woke up. "Without you, I am a scarred and broken person. Without you, I am a mess. But the truth is, I will still be that with you there. It's just that when you're there, it doesn't seem so bad..." he trailed off hoping she understood what he was trying to say. "That's how it's always been, I just never fully understood that."
He reached up one of his mechanical hands to her and she took it.
"I don't need you to stay so that I'm okay; I want you to stay, because I like you here." He said.
"Then here I'll stay." She replied. She leaned down and kissed the shiny metal of the hand she was holding. And even though he knew it was impossible, he was certain he'd felt it.
Then she gently helped him rouse his sleepy kids and they walked back to the ship, Luke and Leia yawning the whole way.

Note
for the tropes thing: fix-it fic, daemon!au, hero/villain
Fit it: 10/10, absolutely, give me ALL OF THEM. has there ever been a series that didn’t make a decision that made fans go “We Can Fix That”?
Anyway, Critical Role AU where Scanlan 2 survives longer than he did during the Vecna fight and one of them can cast Wish and save Vax okaY PLEASE
Daemon AU: i’m so sorry, have we not been properly introduced? hi im alex and i’m always a slut for daemon aus!!
Every single fandom needs one. It should be a fandom law tbh. I have the beginning notes for a Wynonna Earp, Elementary, and Psych aus. whether i’ll ever actually write them remains to be seen, but They’re There.
Hero/Villain: yes yes yes. awkward “well, u were the first villain we fought but turns out this OTHER person is like WAY WORSE so i GUESS we need ur help” enemies to awkward friends to lovers PLEASE
it’s everything i wanted sw///an que///en to be, before they started literally trying to murder each other and i was like “mmmmmmm maybe not”
