A lifetime of recipes
I asked Sharon, "So, how old is this cookbook ...?
"As old as our marriage," she replied.
That would make it ... uh ... 48 years and 151 days old. It came with one of four - yes, four - crockpots we received as wedding gifts in 1975. It was the era of crockpots. (Load em' up in the morning; come home to a fully cooked dinner ... )
As you can see, it's technically no longer a book. It's a collection of food-spattered, barely legible loose pages. But those pages have been consulted as much as any conglomeration of recipes we own. Hence, it's dog-eared condition.
"Is it worth keeping?," I asked.
"Not really," she replied.
But I decided to return it to where I found it - as a souvenir.

Ive got a slowly growing google doc of depressipes that i will one day put together and share because...... i love cooking but every single recipe blog or cookbook in the world is like. So you're gonna need two hours of spare time, 1/20th of a rare and expensive ingredient, an air fryer, crockpot, instapot, and the mental health to wash a sinkful of dishes every time you cook...... Even the budget recipe blogs are like "this should only cost you $1.50/serving because you're only using ONE saffron thread!" Like girl I can't go to the store and buy one saffron thread. Also it's always scaled for a family of four like what if I'm cooking for My Own Ass

Your story 'Object of affection' has been pending for such a long time will you continue it or is in on permanent hiatus?
Hi, Nonny and thank you for so many things: enjoying my story, your continued interest in the story, and this ask!
Tumblr media
None of my series/stories are ever on permanent hiatus; I have series that have been sitting longer than OOA. I have ideas for them, but it's either not quite enough or I have all these other (new) storylines that I tend to work on and write out so I don't forget about them.
I know I am the worst type of writer (incompletes, random stories out of nowhere with no immediate follow-ups, and my posting schedule is non-existent).
I'm a squirrelly crockpot with 10,000 cookbooks full of recipes but no complete meal yet.
Add in the fact that 2020-3 is by far the most trying year I have had to deal with in a long time and frankly, the most frustrating year since 2019 (when the Unraveling began); my writing has taken a hit. I haven't had time to really write or follow-up on anything.
All I can say and ask is that ANYONE who is still following/reading me: THANK YOU for your patience and please bear with me. Something is coming; I just don't know what or when.
Actual photo of me trying to get back into my WIPs and drafts:

After like three days of thinking, if you're still open to offering adulthood advice, the plague of my existence: how the fuck do you decide what to make for dinner (including the 'what should I put on my meal plan list?' step)?
this is a hard one, because the short answer is basically just "vibes"
let's try to break it down at least into some tips, though.
in my house, any time we try a new meal or version of a recipe, everyone casts a vote: "I would do it again" or "I wouldn't do that again". this is usually done in a melodramatic way and turned into a playful fight. strict democratic majority doesn't always win if the cook is in the minority, but it's a start. meals that people would do again get added to the List.
the List has abso-fucking-lutely every communally edible meal on it. meals that are close variations on each other are all included. the List is sorted by categories like "chicken", "beef", "pork", "vegetarian", "pasta", like a cookbook. sides and desserts are not on it. you could make a separate list for them but it's not as important and wouldn't be a capital L List.
if you're looking at your List and it's pitiful, try out some of your favorite meals' cousins! not just white people taco night, but enchiladas! different stir-fry sauces! and then try some terrifying american casseroles with too much cheese and some canned cream soup!! they ain't bad!!!! look at different crockpot meats for ciabatta sandwiches, french dip et al! stuff your chicken breast with something!! go nuts!
do not consult the List when you have just eaten a full meal. do not consult the List when you are in the process of cooking a meal and your whole house smells deliciously like that food, so that the question "What would everyone like to eat this week?" is inevitably met with "idk the thing I'm smelling right now"
pose the question, "What would everyone like to eat this week?" take suggestions. write them down.
supplement these suggestions (or your blank sheet of paper if people are feeling unhelpful) with meals from the List. in my house, we cook...a lot.....like...six days a week. so when we're making a list we aim for one meal with pasta, one with rice, one Asian, one Mexican, one soup (or two in winter), a grilled meal in summer, with no more than two beefs. we try not to repeat anything sooner than three weeks, or we'll get tired of it and ruin it for much longer than three weeks. depending on what AcTiViTiEs we've got planned for the week we'll plan a crockpot meal or a sauce/soup we have in the freezer for that night. you want to balance your weekly plan with some less intensive meals so you don't get overwhelmed.
we arrange our meals into a Plan, but it's not set in stone. we were supposed to have sloppy joes on Tuesday but the meat accidentally was frozen and we didn't have time to thaw it out so we had chicken fajitas instead. not the end of the world.
and the true tip from the Cate Clan: always have pancake/waffle mix in the pantry and a frozen pizza in the freezer, so if you can't bear to make a full meal you have easy options.

Simple Crockpot Recipes For A Three Course Meal
I never thought a crockpot can be so versatile. On a recent challenge with a couple of friend, we came out with a three-course meal; appetizer, main dish and a dessert, all done in with a crockpot! With the help of our cookbooks, you can make wonders. Let me share the crockpot recipes with you and try it for yourself. Maybe you can argue that this may not be a three-course meal, but it sure was a party-saver…
Smoked Sausage And Beans
2 lg. pork-n-beans (3-21 oz. cans)
1 pt. chili sauce
1 c. barbecue sauce
1 c. sweet and sour sauce
1 1/2 lbs. smoked sausage (sliced into bite-size pieces)
On a 12-inch Dutch oven, place all ingredients in Dutch oven. Mix together.
Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees.
Crock Pot Chicken In Mushroom Gravy
3 whole chicken breasts, halved
1/4 c. dry white wine or chicken broth
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 (4 oz.) can mushrooms, sliced
Salt & pepper
Place chicken pieces in crock pot. Season with salt and pepper. Mix wine and soup. Pour over chicken. Add mushrooms. Cover and cook on low for 7 to 9 hours or high 3 to 4 hours. Recipe may be doubled in 5-quart crock pot.
Spiced Fruit Cobbler
4 cans or 1 qt. fruit
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. cinnamon
2 tbsp. sugar
1 pkg. white cake mix
1 1/2 c. water
1 1/2 c. water
2 eggs
Place drained fruit slices in bottom of Dutch oven. Sprinkle with spices and sugar. Blend cake mix, water and eggs.
Pour over fruit mixture. Cover and cook 25-35 minutes at 350 degrees.

kept the Hobbit bread in the fridge overnight and it didn't go soggy (maybe bc the bottom of my bread is much thicker than the recipe writer's? I uh, ran out of counter space to roll out the dough on lol) so I'm hopeful that means it'll last a week or so. going to take some slices to work for lunch (we have a toaster oven I can heat them in) and try and freeze the other half.
also, that cookbook has a recipe for lamb bone broth which I'd like to try since I'm terrible at remembering to buy broth and having a freezer stock of it would be nice. it has to sit in a crockpot for at least 24 hours, so maybe I'll start it monday night since I work from home tuesday...i love my crockpot dearly and I know they can generally be left alone for a workday without combusting, but leaving one running for that long without supervision sketches me out a bit.

Re: depression meals. It ticks me off honestly, like the people writing those recipes don’t actually understand a depression meal.
Do you have a crock pot? The fix it & forget it 5 ingredient cookbook has some good recipes in it that can stretch, and some don’t involve chopping. For example, they have a mountain bike soup which is broth, v-8 juice, barley/rice/spaghetti (whatever you have), pepperoni/ham/bacon (I use pre-cut ham cubes), and a can of green beans.
oh brilliant i do not have a crockpot but i might have to invest …. i hate cookjng deeply regardless of my mood so ive been subsisting off of Huel for like months now (#NotSponsored) and its honestly great but maybe ill branch out into more real food

Yo, does anyone remember back in like 2017 in the BTS vlive channel+ chatroom, there was this big thing about us buying Jin a crockpot and sending him a cookbook with our own personal crockpot recipes? Or was the a fever dream?? 😭

Betty Furness has two new items to show us today! On the top right, she shows a Westinghouse Home Sunlamp, and on the top left, she wears a coat to demonstrate the superpowers of the clothes dryer. On the bottom, a plug in roaster is being sold. It looks kind of like a crockpot, but it would cost you $580 today! She's holding the cookbook that comes with it on the left, and showing a meal made with it on the right. The meal is pork chop casserole, baked potatoes, and chocolate nut pudding for dessert. None of that sounds particularly appetizing to me, but I'd eat anything Betty made me!
