Behold the new album (9 Feb 2024) by The Pineapple Thief!
I read somewhere that the drummer (Gavin Harrison) doesn't repeat a drum fill. (I can't validate that. But the variety in his drumming is quite something. Like the variations in so many of Rush's albums/songs. Outstanding.)
And a lot of appreciation to the other band members who do their bit - not seeking their showing-off moments.
Musing:
I wonder if it is just a personality thing - bassists, keyboardists who build the background music/ambience to allow the other instruments to shine. Like the keyboards in the title song.
I wonder if we will develop sensitivity to notice those who don't seek to be noticed.
I also wonder how ex-band members feel when they are no longer part of a band and the band releases an album that gets 'highly regarded' (think: Keith Harrison, Dan Osborne – ex-drummers for The Pineapple Thief; Mike Mangini - ex-drummer for Dream Theater; Charlie Doiminici, ex-vocalist for Dream Theater; Blaze Bayley/Bayley Alexander Cooke - ex-vocalist Iron Maiden).
Great appreciation to all band members:
Bruce Soord / guitars, vocals
Jon Sykes / bass, backing vocals
Steve Kitch / keyboards
Gavin Harrison / drums & percussion
Completely unexpected moment(s): (Song 02) Every Trace of Us - at 00:40 (Song 05) The Frost - at 01:13

Best New Heavy Metal Releases Week of July 15, 2022
Finally, back to somewhat normal after the covid crap. Thank you modern medicine! Be careful out there, this new BA5 variant is not a joke.
This week started really strong, then faded a bit and then finished strong. At the beginning, I thought I was going to have a shit ton of recommendations, but like always, it evened out. A lot of good Death/Thrash metal hybrid this week along with an album that has my pick for the Power Metal song of the year so far. Let’s just get to it then.
Inhuman Condition-Fearsick (Death/Thrash)**
Saw this band live a while ago. Talk about an insane work ethic. These guys are in like a 147 other bands and continually pushing out material. Remember Ribspreader from my highlights last week? Yup, same guys. Where that band is more Death Metal forward, Inhuman Condition is much more Thrash Metal focused. Still more Death Metal in the vocal delivery but very thrashy in the music with killer riffing and great leads. Great guys to talk to as well. Very fan friendly. If sheer effort could make you successful, these guys should be huge at this point.
Midnight Spirit-Emptiness Outside (Melodic Death)**
Melodic Death out of Russia that leans into the melody more than most in the genre. Very good use of groove in certain sections that let the songs breathe and almost give it a Thrash metal vibe. Usually, this type of approach leads to bands trying to add clean vocals to the mix and 9 times out of 10, that is a terrible idea. Thankfully, Midnight Spirit did not fall into this trap. Great songs throughout without ever feeling like they are using a formula. Just a great listen from beginning to end.
Exul-Path to the Unknown (Thrash)**
Yet another incredibly talented band that is unsigned that puts out an incredibly professional sounding album. This is just all out 80s era Thrash Metal worship without sounding dated. If I’m not mistaken, this band is coming to us out of Poland which has been kicking out some fantastic Metal bands recently. Sent the band a message hoping to get this one on vinyl, as this is directly in my wheelhouse of my favorite genre. Unfortunately, there aren’t plans just yet, but I remain hopeful at some point we will if there is a label smart enough to snap these guys up.
Remains-Grind ‘Till Death (Death/Grind)**
Need some fast and angry music that still has groove and songs that can be differentiated from each other? This isn’t usually the case with Grindcore style Death Metal but it is here. This band is still all about the get in and get out nature of Grindcore but it has great production and really well-written songs. Shout out to the drummer here, he is absolutely crushing it.
Fellowship-The Saberlight Chronicles (Symphonic Power)**
Ok, this highlight is going to be long, but please indulge me on this one as I unabashedly gush about this album. This album is STUNNINGLY good. To think that this is a debut album and it is this damn good is insane. You want an album that will just make you feel good? That has this over the top feeling of happiness from start to finish? Just get this album already. Is it cheesy? Probably, but who cares when it is done this well? In any case, you would have to be a serious fun hater to not at least appreciate what this album puts forth. I will just point to one song although I could really talk about any of them. Track 8 “Glint”. This song just epitomizes what is so great about this album. Everything is just working in such perfect harmony, driving this song forward. The symphonic elements never overpower the song but add that soaring feeling of joy across the entire soundstage as the song moves. The drums aren’t simply keeping the beat but match perfectly where the song is at. Giving moments of silence when needed and power when not. The way the drums track the guitar solo is absolutely brilliantly done. The vocals are exceptional and I think even more so because of the lyrics. I will be the first to admit that I could care less about lyrics. I have always viewed them as the cherry on top, but damn. This is poetry level lyrics and he sings with such conviction and joy that it is seriously palpable. Damn, how many times am I going to say “happy” or ”joy” here? Listen to this album, or at the very least, this song and you will see exactly what I mean. Easily my song of the year so far. Years ago comedian Dave Attell had this joke about naming his kid pizza pussy Santa Claus because everyone in the world loves at least one of those things and they make them happy. He might need to add this Fellowship album to that list.
I better stop there, as I know how attention spans are nowadays. Until next week and, as always,
BANG THY HEAD!!!

i JUST started listening to sleep token and went to the tag only to find you there, please tell me more about this band?? collective?? i need more
You got it buddy! One order of a full Sleep Token beginner primer, coming up!
Sleep Token are a rock? metal? genre blending collective based out of England, tho nobody's 100% sure of where the members are from because they are also a masked and anonymous project. Their style of music varies greatly from album to album and song to song. From soft ballads, to electronic music, to indie, to progressive / prog metal, to post-rock / post-metal, and now with their newest singles, a definite shift into heavier sounds with roots in djent and -core genre elements like breakdowns and scream vocals, let's just say they are very diverse and there are not many bands that sound the same out there. Their blending is pretty unique, and imo will prove to be genre-defining in the coming years. They are signed to Spinefarm records and they're touring as we speak in Europe.
They formed in 2016 and self-released their first EP called One that same year. Their second EP aptly called Two was released in 2017 on Basick. They currently have two full length albums out on Spinefarm, 2019's Sundowning and 2021's This Place Will Become Your Tomb, which are the crux of the material you wanna look into. I always advise that you listen to the whole albums front to back because artists plan these tracklists deliberately, so we owe it to them to consume their output the way they intended us to, but! I also realize nowadays nobody does that because of Spotify and streaming, unfortunately, so: for Sundowning, I'd recommend Sugar as a first track because it touches on both the soft and harsh sides of the album beautifully; and for TPWBYT I'd say start with Alkaline (bonus points for a delicious video to get you into their visual side too). On January 6th and 7th 2023, they released two new songs to showcase their new sound, Chokehold and The Summoning. These two singles seem to be the optimal path currently to get into the band. There are rumors of a new album called Take Me Back To Eden to be released this year, there's a tracklist floating around online though we don't know if its legit, and there are also rumors for new singles coming out, at the time of writing this, tomorrow and in two days, on the 19th and 20th of January 2023. There's also a recording of an acoustic show called From The Room Below floating online, with new takes on their previous songs and a few choice covers like Billie Eilish's When The Party's Over, surprising crossovers that are emotional experiences.
Now, visually and in theme, you'll notice the band has a storyline of sorts. The lore of Sleep Token is this: the band was formed after an ancient deity called Sleep (a reductive name that doesn't encompass the deity's nature at all, but its true name cannot be spoken in any human tongue) revealed itself to the singer, Vessel, in his sleep. Sleep appears to be a powerful force worshiped in ancient civilizations, that gave them the blessing of dreams and the curse of nightmares. Since this apparition, Vessel's life purpose has been to worship and make offerings to Sleep via music. The members of the band are all called vessels, we can infer vessels for Sleep. The singer is Vessel I, but the fandom's moved to just calling him Vessel. The other members are just called by their numbers. II is on drums, III is on bass, IV is on guitar. They're all vessels. They wear masks to hide their identities, with what seems to be full body black paint and some variety of stage costumes including hooded coats and capes and now apparently full pauldrons and void wizard staves.
You'll come across some specific lingo when encountering Sleep Token content or in the fandom. These terms mostly come from their official social media so they use them themselves, it's not fan made. "Worship" is the tagline, kinda like "Nema" is with Ghost. You'll see fans telling each other that all the time. To Worship is to take part in enjoying the band in any way you can: listening to the music, watching videos, streaming their stuff, spreading the word, going to shows, buying merch, etc. Sleep Token's shows are called Rituals, like Ghost's. Pictures and videos are referred to as Sacred Moments, or Sacred Moments in Time. The bands they tour with are called Brethren. Sleep Token's songs are called Offerings. Because they are written as a means to Worship the Sleep deity. Offerings can also be in the form of instrument playthroughs, videos, etc. What the band produces. When you listened to new material or acquire merch, you also Consume. A note on their anonymity to finish: while there are rumors about who the band members are, nothing's confirmed and the band's explicit wish is to maintain this anonymity, so it fundamental to respect those wishes and not try to dig. They value art for art, they let the music speak for itself, and they explicitely wish for their music to be detached from who they are as people. Let's leave the magic in place both for them and for us!
Welcome to the fold! Worship!

I'm late asking this but what was the best and worst of the Progs and Meg in 2023?
I'm late replying but here we go!
Tumblr media
For Dredd in the progs, I really enjoyed the short stories. THE NIGHT SHIFTER, SHRINE, FLUSHER and DISCIPLES OF DEATH were all favorites, although I admit that last one was mostly because of the cute Scottish goth girl.
Other than Dredd, I liked THE OUT, THE ORDER, DURHAM RED, the BATTLE ACTION crossover thing, FERAL AND FOE, DEADWORLD and BLADERS. I especially liked ROGUE TROOPER (I'm a sucker for Ennis), VOID RUNNERS (Boo Cook keeps getting weirder and I love it) and AZIMUTH (gorgeous art, intriguing story, and one of those classic 2000AD "You thought it was a new series but NOOOO!" twists that I really dig).
I didn't really like ENEMY EARTH, I think the art just doesn't fit the premise. And JOE PINEAPPLES should've been by all accounts a cool fun heavy metal last goodbye, but it turned into a weird meandering bunch of nonsense (with some cowardly anti-vax shit thrown in for good measure). LOWBORN HIGH and PORTALS AND BLACK GOO both had the same problem for me: strong, very British premises that don't go as far with the Britishness as I'd like them to. And DEVIL'S RAILROAD, I really wanted to like it but it just kinda lost steam very early on.
The big mehhhh of the year was the end of HERSHEY, though. I tried my best to meet it halfway and to its credit it did deliver some cool panels and nice pages, but in my eyes, it really squandered the last chance for Hershey as a character to present her side of her relationship with Dredd, to leave him with any kind of nugget of character development. It didn't do nearly enough with what I think is years and years of truly compelling relationship work and all the great Simon Fraser art in the world can't fix that.
I still bought a print of that one cover tho'.
Tumblr media
For the MEG, I liked almost everything. STORM WARNING, SURFER, DREADNOUGHTS, LAWLESS (fan-fucking-tastic last chapters), MEGA CITY 2099, all good stuff. I also enjoyed the shorter Dredds in the second half of the year, like RATINGS WAR and FITTING THE DESCRIPTION, but ONE-EYED JACKS... I dunno, neat premise but it went on a bit too long and wasn't super exciting either. Didn't really grab me. Same with Dark Judges.
That said, the most important 2000AD thing in 2023 for me was not in the prog or in the meg. It was here:
Tumblr media
Molcher's I AM THE LAW is a monumental book, one of the most thorough if not THE most thorough look at Dredd in its context. It's also heavy as all drokk, a real gutwrencher of a book, the kind of shit you can't read more than one and a half chapter without getting utterly depressed, ravenously angry, or both. It's a bleak, tough book but also a necessary one. That it's an official Rebellion product, to me, serves as a line in the sand, a very explicit statement about how they perceive Dredd. In a time where companies are running over themselves to claim their works are "not political" and "only want to entertain", Rebellion publishing Molcher's titanic work and advertising it next to their Case Files collections is something worthy of respect.
(Also, I may be a little biased on account of being in the Special Thanks for the book...)

Bandcamp Wrapped: What are three of your favorite purchases this year?
As always thank you for finding a way to include the iPod Haver in Spotify Wrapped, so:
Hope is Heavy, from Acid Magus. They actually put out a lyric video for A Planet, A Deathstar off that album last night.
youtube
Acid Magus is really doing the psychedelic rock/prog metal crossover right. I think I still prefer Wyrd Syster but this album comes with a seven minute reimagination of the first three Wyrd Syster tracks if you buy it so, I mean. I'm not complaining.
catharsis from Covet. We all love Covet, impossibly talented math rockers who always hit, this album is a really cool dreamy interminable flowing thing. Pull track for this album is definitely vanquish.
Curta'n Wall's Siege Ubsessed! is one of those things you start listening to as a bit, a goof, look at this funny ren-faire-ass music, and then discover you have had it on loop for three days. Genuinely having a hard time picking a pull track, but here's A New Castle is Born which I think covers the vibes.
Curta'n Wall is an alias of Abysmal Specter, the guy who started Grime Stone Records. A lot of Grime Stone leans too lo-fi for my taste, but if you like dungeon synth they're really worth following.
