Let’s start this off simple. He’d sleep. He would literally just close his eyes at takeoff and only wake up when they’re bringing the food around. But at some point he’d want to watch a movie with you, so you’d share a pair of headphones and get cozy next to each other. He’d get out the blanket that the plane offers and put it over you and him, lift the armrest up and let you lay your head down on his soft shoulder. You’d definitely watch a cartoon, maybe something like Turbo (movie about the racing snail) but it wouldn’t be long until you dozed off in your comfortable position, arms wrapped around one of his. He’d soon join you, after taking a couple of crazy selfies with your hilarious sleeping face, he’d carefully lay his cheek on the top of your head and also fall asleep, only waking up for the landing.

Ayooo this fvcking guy. Firstly, he’d definitely be vlogging and he’d want some action on this flight, so he’d force you to play different games with him. For example a game of cards and whoever wins pays for the others meal. Aj wouldn’t let you sleep, he didn’t get on this flight to sleep (like Chunkz), of course he’d let you sleep, but with him by your side you wouldn’t even want to. Would you get complaints? Uuuh maybe? But you’d be respectful…as much as you could. After being two crazy people you’d listen to some music together while playing the shitty games on the plane monitors, laughing at the candy crush rip offs.

Every time I start writing one of these “thoughts” I always call Kenny baby. Cause he is (please I’m crying), he’d be so so sweet. He’d make sure you weren’t sitting in front of an annoying kid who kicks your seat, or a man who keeps pushing your chair up with his knees cause there’s no space (Niko??). He’d put you first on any type of trip. He’d give you his blanket, let you sleep on him, give you his dessert when it’s meal time. And you’d appreciate every little thing, and after convincing him that he could lay down on your shoulder and sleep (cause we know our bbg needs his rest) he’d slowly start falling asleep. Being the good gf you are you’d pull a blanket over him and place a small, but affectionate kiss on the top of his head, before smiling to yourself and continuing to watch the movie that you were watching.

Sharky

Like Kenny Sharky would give you everything you need and more. He’d definitely bring two head-pillow-things, one for you and for himself. He knows how hard it is to fall asleep sometimes so he’d also get matching blindfolds to go. When you get on the plane you’re both excited. Sharky let you have the window seat on the condition that you’d take the best photos for insta stories. Flying with Sharky would generally be chill. You’d double connect your AirPods to his phone and listen to his Frank Ocean playlist and you’d end up napping on the window while Sharky draws little circles on your knee. (I need Sharky next to me rn and not this guy who keeps crashing into me w his head when he falls asleep)

Niko

Girrrlll, listen, I feel like Niko’s the type of person who’d be worried that their ears won’t unblock during the flight. Like he wouldn’t want to be uncomfortable for the next several hours of the flight, so he’d stress about it on take off. You’d obviously know about this and be there to help him (or also worry with him, I would cause my ears are pain in my life) so you’d chew packs and packs of gum until you were at a stable height. Once you stopped worrying about that…Niko would probably fall asleep. With his mouth open. On you. Look as much as you’d want a romantic trip, you won’t get it, not on a plane. Niko is our little cutie patootie and we need to let him sleep, because as soon as the two of you land wherever, he’ll be taking care of you like you’re the most precious thing in the world (which to him you are) so it’s only fair for you to get comfy in your seat, lay Niko onto you and sleep yourself (or watch a movie)

PICO PETS: PART 1

Hello, Funky Followers, and welcome to another Funky Friday! You probably saw this one coming from a mile away. We’re a blog that talks about creatures. Why WOULDN’T we talk about the biggest and most beloved monster collecting video game franchise of all time?

As we all know, however, there are kind of a lot of Pico Pets- 58 at the time of writing- to the point some don’t even bother trying to Catch ‘Em ‘All anymore. So this will be part one of many, and we’ll be talking about numbers 1 through 15! Here we go!

FYRO

This one is basically the mascot, appearing on the icons of both Pico Pets AND Pico Pets Puzzle, and being one of the three choosable starters. As you can see, it’s an ambiguous little fire demon thing. It’s cute enough, I suppose, but a little to “marketably” cute for my tastes... I want SILLY cute! And don’t worry, this game delivers in spades!

BUDILLY

This one displays a somewhat similar style of cuteness, but I like it a bit more by virtue of being a plant with a face, earning it some Silly Points. It’s also allegedly an artichoke, but I’m not seeing it.

FROSBIT

Now THIS is my favorite of the three starters! I love its big buck teeth and more blank expression, and how it seemingly moves around on a mound of snow. It also reminds me of a nudibranch... and people do call some of them sea bunnies, so it might be intentional!

ROUNDINO

As its description says, it's pretty basic, but its description also says it comes from a land where all dinosaurs eat pasta, which is probably the most interesting thing about it. I like how wide its mouth is, though.

SCARYCROW

Here's our first glimpse at how cool these really get! Not only is this a crow-themed scarecrow, but it got tired of scaring crows, and now haunts humans instead! That name is SO good!

CARAMELLOW

Snail and sugar together... two of my favorite things as one, and it is very cute, with pleasant colors! Also, I no longer disrespect cartoon snails without eyestalks, since there are real land snails that have their eyes directly on their heads anyway. I’m over it. Do I PREFER eyestalks? Of course. But who doesn’t? 

PETUNA

Pico Pets? More like POGGERS Pets, am I right? Petuna may be simply a flower with a face, but it is a very SILLY face, and I like it a lot, much more than I would if it was a simply smiley face in the center.

CRICKLEAF

This one’s a little cutie patootie. It may not look that much like a cricket, but it looks enough like a bug, and I like that it looks like it’s made of both leaves AND blades of grass! They rest in groups that look like bushes, which is lovely.

TERRUGA

A turtle with a rock shell is something I am surprised I don’t see more often! Also, its face is cute and torty, and it has a little mushroom on top! I would like to touch it. I bet it would pop off with a satisfying popping sound. Like those tiny mushrooms Mario can kick in Odyssey.

PORQUISH

Here you will REALLY see how special Pico Pets truly are! Since Porquish appears in the forest stage, I assumed it was just a silly bug, so of course, I loved it already. But I couldn't figure out its name... the “quish” part is obviously from “squish”, but what about the “por”? A friend said it reminded him of “porpoise”, so I looked up the word origin, and “porpoise” is derived from “porcopiscus”, which means...

SEA PIG! Porquish is a SEA PIG! They put a sea pig in their game like it's nothing. They think this is no big deal. I love SO much the fact that there is not only a sea pig in this game, but that it is played entirely for cuteness, and is also VERY powerful. It's perfect.

ORCHIDUCK

Orchiduck is already nice by virtue of being a duck. However, it’s also made of petals, which makes it hollow, making it able to float! Real ducks are already pretty good at floating, but it’s a nice look at Orchiduck’s biology, I suppose.

GUARANEYE

Another example of the wild biological knowledge on display here! There is one fruit-based monster in this game. And of all fruits, they chose a GUARANA. And they made it a cycloptic predator that stares at prey until it dies of embarrassment! Wow!

LUMIFLY

I don’t usually like fire monsters very much, personally, but Lumifly is incredibly simple, and that’s what makes it lovable. I’m glad its only facial features are eyes, and its legs are neat, too.

FUAAH

Fuaah is pretty much the star of the show. Just look at it. The description in-game calls it charming. It's OBJECTIVELY charming. The makers of this game are clearly geniuses, but for whatever reason, not quite genius enough to make Fuaah their mascot. What kind of creature do you think it is, if any? I think it should be a bird. That would be fun.

CHEWMI

Our final pet for now, this one is based on chewed gum, but I prefer to think it's made of tongue, because that would just be uncomfortable (but in a fun way). My friend doesn't like that its name says "chew me", but I think it's fun (in an uncomfortable way).

The first couple are some posing practices I did with characters I don’t do much with except for practices. xP  It seems that my demon character Mardirith saw that I was drawing lots of cartoon demons lately and wondered why he wasn’t in on the party.  This chaotic-neutral brat demands to have at least one page in a sketchbook dedicated to him, so there he is (I wonder what would happen if he met Bendy...there’s an inky-bus joke somewhere, but that might be slightly poor taste). xP  From an unrelated universe is my snow-leopard angel Anyka mid-flight...this one’s prompting me to do some more bird wing studies, otherwise I’m happy with the pose.  The third is my attempt at drawing a realistic tiger face head-on...and when I pulled up a photo to check my work, I was happy to only make a couple minor corrections. o.o  PROGRESS.

And of course I had to end it with more Bendy practices, because this toon is too flippin’ adorable still...his design is getting better by me now, at least, but I sometimes keep forgetting to add his bow-tie o.O also the rubber-hose style is great for posing practice, still much fun. x3

That's not the message they were going for. They aren't saying anything like that. Those cartoon characters are like... Legit monsters, creatures, whatever. And they are living with humans. Thats the whole thing and I think Welcome To My Life is a very chill, moderate pace, very good minisode. But that's not the plot, hun. You had me and then you lost me

All right, so I was planning to reply to this on the weekend, but I’m ending my hiatus earlier than expected so I thought I would go ahead and answer this. Under the cut, because it got longer than I expected:

Here’s the thing that I think might have lost you: I started the post with the assumption that most people already know what queer-coding is (not to be confused with queerbaiting). In effect, a character is written and portrayed with certain traits usually associated with queer people. I would have explained that in the post itself, but I was mainly just trying to write out my basic thoughts.

Welcome to My Life is a really good example of queer coded characters! I’m not entirely sure why you felt the need to defend it when I already stated how much I enjoyed it, but the point wasn’t whether or not I liked the short itself. The point was the underlying message, which was acceptance, right? Clearly. It was a cute little short film about a nice boy making friends with someone who learned to accept him despite their differences. Easy for kids to understand, teaches them a good moral.

I was only using it as a brief example in the original post, so I’ll go into a little more detail here about examples of queer coding in Welcome to My Life. There are three big moments that stand out to me:

The interview with the parents  “I mean, back when we were young, there weren’t as many monsters running around. But in today’s world, there’s all kinds of people.” “And people are becoming more, um, more tolerant of, you know, like, different kinds of parenting styles and different family configurations. So accepting a monster just kind of goes along with that.”

Honestly, this is the main one for me. This is about as explicit as they can get without actually saying “this whole short is a metaphor for growing up with queer parents.” Just the use of the word “tolerant” here is pretty telling, because that’s one that gets tossed around a lot when it comes to MOGAI rights. The mention of different family configurations is important to, since that’s a pretty obvious nods to same-sex marriages. T-Kesh’s parents also point out that there’s no real difference between their son and the other kids and that they all get along very well. That was all deliberate on the creator’s part.

The fight with Ian “I don’t look like your sorry face!”

Look, I’m pretty quiet about about my orientation for the most part, and especially was when I was younger, so I’ve never had any issues with bullying. But for people who are openly out, or whose parents or even siblings are openly out, this is, unfortunately, really common. People know. And a lot of people don’t like it. And Ian’s thing in particular here was that he didn’t want to be associated with T-Kesh or seen as being in any ways similar to him. Ian, a very obviously straight human kid, didn’t want anyone (especially T-Kesh himself) to so much as imply that he might be gay a monster. He even says himself that he doesn’t like T-Kesh saying that Ian is like “a version of him.” 

The fact that Ian is religious “You know that guy?” “He goes to my church!”

This was kind of a throwaway line from Lucas, but I think it’s really important that they put it in there. We all know that 90% of the time, homophobes and the like are going to be religious. So while saying that someone goes to church isn’t anywhere near the same as saying they’re going to hate queer people, in this context it definitely has that connotation. It would have been easy to have Lucas say that Ian is his neighbor, or in one of his classes, or that they go to the same gym. Instead, he goes to church.

Look, I’m not saying that you have to agree with me, or that Welcome to My Life was created primarily as an analogy for queer kids and families. But the people who made it made some very obvious and deliberate choices to give it that feel, and while I think it’s great, I also think. Well. Refer back to the original point for my thoughts on the queer-people-as-monsters metaphor.
