Film Journal 1

The Skeleton Dance

Produced and directed by Walt Disney and animated by Ub Iwerks.

1) Technique section: It was named as the first Silly Symphony animated. It is a black and white cartoon (Inkblot).

2) Representation section: The film is about a dance of 4 human skeletons, to the rhythm of the music, while other characters and elements of the context begin to interact with the skeletons to the rhythm of the music. I believe that what they represent here is the naive way of having fun through music and festivity, in this case, macabre. It´s a modern film example of medieval European "danse macabre" imagery.

3) Reception section: I consider that it is an extremely funny, cult and representative film of a specific time in the world and of an economic boom in the United States, after the end of the First World War, it reinforced the intention of a moment of creative avant-garde and spirit of celebration.

Scott Mildenhall: Sigala's found a new preset! It unmasks itself as the same old thing in new clothes by the time of the first instrumental break, but nevertheless, between this and "All Day and Night" there's hope for the outbreak of a trance revival. With Becky Hill given several different ways to display her powerhouse credentials, "Wish You Well" would be a fitting catalyst. [8]

Crystal Leww: Thanks to her days on The Voice UK, Becky Hill seems to be one of the few dance music vocalists that seems to always command credit. And that's good because Becky Hill continues to churn out the hits. Between her work on that massive Heldens debut single and her collaborations with MK, her voice has been a dive-off-the-edge-of-a-cliff, heart-pounding driving force of nature in dance house. Sigala, for his part, has consistently shown that he's no one-hit wonder himself. This is better than "Just Got Paid" due to sheer simplicity, less good than "Show You Love." That's still pretty good. [7]

Will Adams: Between recent output from MK, Jax Jones, Camelphat and now this, it seems there's more space for trance sensibilities in dancepop than ever has been this decade. It's a welcome change; finally producers have learned it's possible to communicate emotion in a house banger without the standard piano chug (which only briefly appears at the outset here). Instead we get those peppy Sash! synths, which work surprisingly well with Becky Hill's powerful belt. [7]

Iain Mew: The belting is more important than the sentiment, and Becky Hill is perfect for it. The production and the way it avoids sticking to any one level of artificiality is more distinctive than Sigala has managed in a long time. The synth line that zigzags through and builds the steps for Hill to climb up for the chorus is a particular pleasure. The only downside is the nagging feeling that I could be listening to it in "Likey" instead. [7]

Alfred Soto: Becky Hill works best when talk-singing instead of belting, or, rather, her convictions show fewer seams; that's more than I can say about Sigala's DJ clichés. [4]

Kayla Beardslee: Essentially a remake of Sigala's song "Lullaby" with Paloma Faith, down to the soulful British singer. But although it's not original, "Wish You Well" is fun, energetic, and summery, and that's good enough for me, even if the track does sound a little confused about whether it wants to be angry or gracious towards the ex. Ian Mathers: The average TSJ score of the six songs made in part by Sigala when I search the site is juuuust over 4.06. By that standard, then, this one is just a little above average. [5]
