Danger I Can’t Hide by CelticSky
Summary:
“Don’t,” Tomlinson’s voice was low, gravelled, hiding out in the night where only Styles could hear it. “Stop it. Calm down. You can’t do anything.”
Styles’ chest heaved. Tomlinson had him pinned against the wall, his forearm strong against his ribs. The night air crackled around them and all he could hear was the overlap of their breath, desperation, exquisite need and pain and desire and longing and lingering resistance.
He couldn’t take his eyes from Tomlinson’s lips. The way they fell open to expel air against Harry’s jaw. His tongue darting out to wet them between desperate words, making them glisten in what little light there was. His eyes were lidded and unseeing as he himself looked down to stare at Styles’ mouth.
~~~
Flying Officer Styles and Sergeant Tomlinson would have likely never crossed paths in a time of peace, their lives laid out neatly, predictably before them.
But then the world became unrecognisable. Too soon they grew accustomed to fear, surrounded by death and destruction, not even their freedom a certainty any more.
Until they found eachother.
Comfort. Companionship. Understanding.
Another person to lose.
WWII-fic anon here: Thank you all so much for your responses, you are all so wonderful!! The thing is, yes, I probably would not pick any war related fic anyways, but with — and this is very personal, I know — WWII related topics, I feel a kind of burden that is heavily related to guilt and shame, due to the history of my family. I do know that my ancestors wrongdoings are not my fault, it got much better during adulthood, but still, combining the topic with a Larry fic — it feels wrong. BUT: I am longing for a captivating fic and maybe, maybe this can be a (kind of weird) step of healing, so I am going to give it a try… Again: Thank you all so very much! 💕
Be gentle with yourself. If the fic feels like too much, don’t force it. But I think you might enjoy it—it’s much more focused on their relationship and the day to day chaotic and intense experience of being at war than anything to do with the politics or the atrocities of the particular war they’re fighting. I hope you end up liking it. ❤️
I started Danger I Cant Hide seeing your post about it and finished it in two nights… It’s soooo good I too wish it would never end. That fic help me through a tough sleepless week… Thank you for the recommendation!!!!
Do u have any other fiction that you wished it’d never end? Mine is Walk That Mile.
Oh god, I finished it recently and I can hardly move on from it. Danger I Can’t Hide is so so good!
What comes to mind as an outstanding fic I read this year and that I never wanted to end, is the Hogwarts AU The Serpent and the Lion. You don’t need to be a Harry Potter nerd to understand or enjoy this one. Harry’s and Louis’ chemistry is absolutely amazing. The author wrote such a compelling story, I could’ve read on and on and on.
I haven’t read Walk That Mile yet, but I heard great things about it. Maybe I should finally give it a go, though after DICH I need some sweet fluffy domestic fics as a reset first.
Read Danger I cannot Hide but I generally cannot focus on details in stories and fics unless they're things I'm extremely passionate about. Like that comment about spitfires vs hurricanes? Could not give you one detail BUT I LOVED THE FIC. is that weird? I think it's my undiagnosed/self-diagnosed ADHD but thats the thing I can only focus on big picture and plots and while I'm reading a paragraph my eyes are already eyeing what happens at rhe bott of a page. Does anyone else end up doing this?
I think many people with ADHD experience this. It can also be processing or tracking disorders that make reading details difficult. Honestly, it could be so many things. 😅 But I’m glad you enjoyed the fic nonetheless. I seriously caught so much more of the detail on the second read. I was too stressed the first time to retain all of it.
your apartment fills with the mouthwatering scents of buckwheat and dashi as you begin to unpack the takeout that's just been delivered. but even with your stomach already growling, you pause, confused.
“kento?” you call to where he’s is leaning against the counter.
“yes, love?”
you count the boxes again, frowning. “why did you order three? is one for your other girlfriend?”
“of course not,” he replies, unfazed by your teasing accusation as he continues to scroll through his tablet. “she doesn't like soba.”
you throw a napkin in his direction when your see the small smirk curling on his lips, shutting off his tablet to look over at you.
you wait, watching him expectantly.
"it's…for yuuji.”
“ah,” you realize, unable to keep from smiling. “your protégé.”
“he’s more like my intern,” he corrects, taking two plates from the cabinet.
you grab a third, following him to the dining table to help him set up. “you fired your last intern because you didn’t like how he organized your files. yet this one is sukuna’s vessel, and you’re bringing him soba.”
nanami pulls out your chair, kissing the top of your head before settling in his own seat. "you don't approve."
"it's not about that. if you say he's not dangerous, of course i believe you.”
he looks at you for a moment, and you can practically see the gears turning in his head as he figures out what to say.
“i just…don’t want him to feel so alone,” he says softly. “you heard about what happened at the detention center. gojo’s trying to hide him from the higher-ups right now, but we don’t know how long that’ll last. he’s just a kid, and gojo’s has a lot going on. so i— i want to look out for him.”
he glances over at the takeout bag, where the third box is sitting. “i may not be able to protect him like gojo can, but i can at least make sure he’s eating.”
you know he’s been exhausted lately. you can see it in the lines on his face and the slight sag of his shoulders when he trudges home at the end of the day.
yet he still finds time to care for a student that’s not his own.
and oh, if that did not make your heart skip a beat, knowing you were loved by a man capable of such care. you can’t help but watch him, almost unable to wrap your head around how lucky you are.
“you’re staring, dear.”
you sigh loudly, rising from your seat to wrap your arms around his shoulders, kissing his cheek. “i think my heart might burst if i find another reason to love you more than i already do.”
he takes your hand, pressing his lips to your engagement ring.
“you love me plenty already. which is why you’ve already set a third plate out to invite yuuji to eat with us, correct?”
_____
“and then nanamin charged in and chopped it up just like this—”
nanami watches you watch yuuji swing a single chopstick menacingly as he recounts their last mission.
“he just charged in, hm?” you ask calmly. “yuuji, you’ll tell me if my fiancé is being reckless, won’t you?”
“yes ma’am!”
the blond sits up, clearing his throat. “surely that’s not necessary.”
“he’s so stubborn, isn’t he?” you ask the boy sitting across from you, even rolling your eyes.
“sure is! he’s pretty bossy too.”
nanami’s scoffs as if he’s annoyed, but secretly…secretly he couldn’t be more pleased.
he’s always wanted to be a lot of things in his life. a good sorcerer, a good employee. a good man.
but all of those things he thought he needed to be to live a full life are irrelevant.
because nothing is more fufilling than being needed and being loved.
“You know now that Regulus isn’t an asshole it’s getting harder to ignore the other thing.”
Lily simply raised an eyebrow. “What other thing?”
James sighed, waving his hand in the air. “You know. The thing we all know but can’t say in front of Sirius.”
As Lily connects the dots, a slow smirk appears on her face. “Is the thing that Regulus Black is good looking?”
James scoffs. “He’s not just good looking. He’s the most gorgeous man I’ve ever laid eyes on - the way his hair falls in perfectly styled curls, his inquisitive eyes hiding so much knowledge -
Lily rolls her eyes. “Okay lover boy. I’m beginning to see why we didn’t work out.”
But James doesn’t stop. He’s on a roll. “I love it when he says my name. Even when he’s annoyed with me - “
“Is that so Potter?”
James jerks up in his seat, hitting his leg on the table in his haste.
He feels himself blush as he meets amused grey eyes. Lily is cackling in the background.
“So.. How much of that did you hear?” James asks, aiming for subtle and missing it by miles.
Regulus smirks. “Enough to know that apparently everyone should find me hot.”
James groans loudly, burying his face in his hands.
“Is there any way you can forget I said that?”
Regulus leans in and smirks - a very dangerous expression on him that James should not find as hot as he does.
“Only if you forget that I think everyone should think you’re hot too.”
And oh -
Well. What Sirius didn’t know couldn’t hurt him.
