So I'm 9 films deep into my Puppet Master marathon and... How do they make them look so much worse with subsequent films??
Let's use Jester as an example, I think it's really apparent with him.
Here's Blade in Puppet Master and Puppet Master 2.
Notice the glossy look, the sharp angular cheeks, the precisely painted makeup and general level of craftsmanship involved.
Now let's look at the same character in Puppet Master: Axis of Evil
Keep in mind, textually this is THE SAME PUPPET. Look at the less detailed eyes, lacking makeup or really any kind of border. They just roughly smudge into the rest of the face. The sharpness is lost due to the rough, matte texture of the sculpt.
I don't want to disrespect the artists who worked on these films. Someone still had to put time and effort into making these. I just wish the same level of care and craftsmanship had gone into the newer films.
The obvious lack of stop motion in the newer films is also very disappointing. It was really the highlight of the first few entries. Look at this shot from Puppet Master 2
And compare it to this shot from Puppet Master: Axis of Evil
I swear to god I'm not cherry picking, that was the most charitable clip I could find of a puppet in motion, that's a shot they decided was good enough to put in the TRAILER.
It's just really sad watching this franchise degrade throughout a marathon. Puppet Master 2 was made for less than $800,000. A low-end Blumhouse film costs about $5,000,000, for reference in terms of low budget horror. You're telling me that Full Moon can't afford to toss that much money into a project along with enough passion to end up with a good movie?
Charlie. Charles. Mr Band. I am speaking to you directly. I'm a fan! I bought your book, I watch your movies, I subscribe to the streaming service. I'm not asking much. Just make a good movie. Please. I'll write it for you!! Just get someone who can make the puppets look good. They are the stars, after all.
