For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things that I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal.

It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.

Spring equinox 2023: Ancient traditions of renewal echo into the modern world

Thomas Nashe, the 16th-century British poet and dramatist, certainly looked forward to spring in his own colorful, singsong way:

The fields breathe sweet, the daisies kiss our feet, Young lovers meet, old wives a-sunning sit, In every street these tunes our ears do greet: Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to witta-woo! Spring, the sweet spring!

Sweet spring indeed – a time to observe the growing light, listen to the birds, smell the flowers and feel the growing warmth from the sun.

They’re all signs that spring equinox 2023 is arriving. This official first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere is a sign of rebirth, a time of tradition and a harmonious balance between day and night.

Precisely when will the spring equinox happen?

Some folks like things scheduled down to the minute.

The spring equinox will arrive exactly at 21:24 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) March 20, according to EarthSky. Here’s how that breaks down at various points around the world (all times adjusted for Daylight Saving Time):

• Honolulu (Hawaii): 11:24 a.m. • San Francisco (California) and Victoria (Canada): 2:24 p.m. • Santa Fe (New Mexico) and Guadalajara (Mexico): 3:24 p.m. • Minneapolis (Minnesota) and Kingston (Jamaica): 4:24 p.m. • Montreal (Canada) and Charleston (South Carolina): 5:24 p.m. • Halifax (Canada): 6:24 p.m.

Crossing over the Atlantic, here are some more places:

For some, fall is in the air

Folks in the Northern Hemisphere are looking forward to longer days, flowers and a burst of greenery. But for people living south of the equator, this equinox means they are heading into fall.

So for Chileans, South Africans and Australians, among others, this is a time to look forward to cooler autumn weather.

For people who reside near the equator (in places such as Quito, Ecuador, or Singapore), none of this is really a big deal. They get roughly 12 hours of daylight and nighttime year round.

Spring equinox has another name

If you ever hear anyone say “vernal equinox,” it means the same thing.

The term equinox comes from the Latin word “equinoxium,” meaning “equality between day and night.” And vernal also comes from Latin and means “spring.”

Why does spring equinox happen?

The Earth rotates along an imaginary line that runs from North Pole to South Pole. It’s called the axis, and this rotation is what gives us day and night.

However, the axis tilts at 23.5 degrees, as NASA explains. That positions one hemisphere of the planet to get more sunlight than the other for half of the year’s orbit around the sun. This discrepancy in sunlight is what triggers the seasons.

Spring, the most inspiring of the seasons

The effect is at its maximum in late June and late December. Those are the solstices, and they have the most extreme differences between day and night, especially near the poles. (That’s why it stays dark for so long each day during the winter in places such as Scandinavia and Alaska.)

But since the winter solstice three months ago in December, you’ve probably noticed that our days have been getting longer in the Northern Hemisphere and the nights shorter. And now here we are at the spring equinox!

Going forward, the Northern Hemisphere will be more exposed to the sun than the Southern Hemisphere. That’s why it gets increasingly warmer as we head toward the summer solstice in June.

The equinoxes aren’t exactly ‘equal’

It turns out you actually get a little more daylight than darkness on the equinox – and how much so depends where you are on the planet.

How does that happen when it’s supposed to be 12 hours of day and 12 hours night?

As the US National Weather Service explains, the “nearly” equal hours of day and night are because of the complex way a sunrise is measured and the refraction of sunlight in our atmosphere.

This bending of light rays “causes the sun to appear above the horizon when the actual position of the sun is below the horizon.” The day is a bit longer at higher latitudes than at the equator because it takes the sun longer to rise and set the closer you get to the poles.

We got that truly equal day/night split a few days before the official spring equinox. That’s called the equilux.

Get oriented

If you’re a sky watcher, the website EarthSky points out the equinoxes – spring or autumn – are a superb time to orient yourself. The equinoxes are the only two times a year the sun rises due east and sets due west for everyone on the planet.

EarthSky says the equinox is “a good day for finding east and west from your yard or other favorite site for watching the sky. Just go outside around sunset or sunrise and notice the location of the sun on the horizon with respect to familiar landmarks.”

Another fun fact: The sun sets faster during the equinoxes than during solstices – and it’s true for both hemispheres. The reason? The setting sun hits the horizon at the steepest possible angle to Earth, EarthSky says.

The sun sets more slowly during solstices when the Earth’s tilt is most extreme. And the effect is more dramatic the farther you get from the equator. That’s why the sun never sets at all in the Arctic Circle during the time around the summer solstice.

Special sites and modern celebrations

In England, the mysterious stone structure of Stonehenge has been a popular gathering place for solstices and equinoxes. English Heritage organizes the events, and if you aren’t fond of big crowds, the equinoxes draw fewer people than the solstices typically.

In Mexico, the Mayan site Chichén Itzá has special equinox ties. At the site, the impressive pyramid known as El Castillo was aligned so that a shadow outlining the form of a snake of light (Kukulcán) descends the steps on the equinoxes.

And it’s not just well-known ancient sites that traditionally get in on the action.

Pike Place Market in Seattle will be celebrating its annual Daffodil Day. When shoppers visit the market, they will get a free bundle of daffodils while supplies last.

The city of Zenica, northwest of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina, holds its annual Cimburijada or “Festival of Scrambled Eggs” on the first day of spring.

Cultural influences

Cultures around the world celebrate the equinox. Here are a few:

Nowruz is the Persian New Year. Also known as Nauryz, Navruz or Nowrouz, it means “new day.”

It’s no coincidence it falls on the first day of spring. The Iranian calendar is a solar calendar, meaning time is determined, through astronomical observations, by Earth’s movement around the sun. So, the first day of the year always kicks off with the vernal equinox.

It’s a celebration of new beginnings: wishing prosperity and welcoming the future while shedding away the past. That’s why families use this time to deep clean their homes and closets and buy fresh clothing.

In China, trying to stand an egg upright is a popular game during the spring equinox, according to VisitBeijing.com. The custom is thought to go back thousands of years, and it’s believed that if people can get an egg to stand, they will have good luck. And people across China eat local spring vegetables.

In Japan, Vernal Equinox Day is a public holiday (on Tuesday, March 21, this year). Japan is thoroughly modernized, but its people still adhere to old traditions such as visiting family graves and holding family reunions to mark the spring equinox.

Meditation: What do you most hunger for - wealth, peace, health, love, the good life? Jesus addressed this issue with those who sought him after the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves. Were they simply hungry for things which satisfy the body or for that which satisfies the heart and soul? Jesus echoes the question posed by the prophet Isaiah: "Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy" (Isaiah 55:2)? There are two kinds of hunger - physical and spiritual. Only God can satisfy the hunger in our heart and soul - the hunger for truth, for life, and for love.

Jesus also spoke about the works of God and what we must do to be doing the works of God, namely to believe in God' Son whom he has sent into the world. Jesus offers a new relationship with God which issues in a new kind of life: A life of love and service, and the forgiveness of others which corresponds to God's mercy and kindness; a life of holiness and purity which corresponds to God's holiness; and a life of submission and trust which corresponds to the wisdom of God. This is the work which Jesus directs us to and enables us to perform in the power of the Holy Spirit. Do you hunger for the bread which comes down from heaven and thirst for the words of everlasting life?

"Lord Jesus, you alone can satisfy the deepest longing and hunger in our hearts. May I always hunger for the imperishable bread, that I may be satisfied in you alone as the True Bread of Heaven. Nourish and strengthen me that I may serve you with great joy, generosity, and zeal all the days of my life"

As we enter into the third week of the Easter season, some of you have walked with the risen Christ, listened to Him interpret the Scriptures, and recognized Him in the breaking of the bread (see Lk 24:15, 27, 30-31). Like millions of Christians throughout the centuries, you have cried out: “It is the Lord!” (Jn 21:7)

After meeting your beloved older Brother raised from the dead, you’ll never be the same. “The old order has passed away; now all is new!” (2 Cor 5:17; cf Rv 21:5) Everything is different — life, people, time, money, possessions, church, and work. You no longer work “for perishable food but for food that remains unto life eternal” (Jn 6:27). Like Sts. Andrew, Peter, James, John, and Matthew, some of you are called to leave your jobs. They’re not compatible with the risen life. However, most of you are called to do your jobs in a different, risen way. Like St. Stephen, you will be “filled with grace and power” (Acts 6:8). You will receive such wisdom (see Acts 6:10) that your word will build God’s kingdom, bring down the strongholds of the evil one (2 Cor 10:4), and even make you worthy of being persecuted (Acts 5:41).

Work as if a dead God-Man has risen from the grave and now lives in You. Jesus has risen! He lives in you! Work for Him.

Prayer: Father, may I work harder and more joyfully for love of You.

Promise: “The way of truth I have chosen.” —Ps 119:30

Praise: St. Fidelis left his law career to become a priest, joining his brother George as a member of the Capuchin Order.

Against the Cult of the Reptile God

It’s been something, I’ll tell you. The seasons pass and the heart is seasoned. I’ve wandered places on this planet I didn’t even see on a map. Long Lake where orcs live with humans and even make families together. Even met some trolls whose ancestors are younger than Gelden. In fact, they thought me fortunate to have met xer. I do too, just not like I’m xer messenger or hold any authority from xer.

I wandered. You might call it aimless. Watch my feet, and most times I’ve learned something interesting.

For example.

Not all bows are made from a tree. Some are built of horn and sinew and even cloth. Stronger and more durable it took three months to craft and the orc who crafted it was not cheep.

I don’t know how they did it. That quiver can hold a lot more than it looks. The instructions were clear on how to make it work. Remember what I put into it or I might lose it forever. Not a word on why it works, though.

For now, I’m sort of homesick. My children will be fifteen in a couple months. I might just want to be there for that.

I miss them.

So, I crossed the Gray Range on the King’s Highway. I’ve taken to covering my horns, little spikes that they are, just to keep the conversation friendly. The trees here about are anxious. Most branches within reach are missing, but the rest is left to heal. And game is very sparse. Too many people, not enough resources.

My journey brings me to Orlane, a town a days travel from Mochyndun of the Kingdom of Whelm.

First thing I notice is the chill. Sure, late autumn, summer was kind of short. That’s not the chill I feel. It echoes badly with that one wound.

I wander to a run down farm house.1 They didn’t pack, just left things as they were. Looks to have been a year or so ago, so if there was a struggle it would have been washed over by dust and rat dung.

I dropped a bucket into the well for some water, but my heart warned me not to drink any.2 A taste didn’t tell me why. At this point, I’ve come to trust my instincts. Besides, I have this other going for me. My mug, a little focus, and I have water enough to bathe in.3

Some of it spills on the floor and I watch as it finds a little crack to pass through. I focus on the icon,4 feed it some light, and watch as the trap door opens wide, just by pushing dirt around. A little more thought while I dance my fingers over my other hand and I have a flame on a candle to give me light.

The basement is a little wet, and otherwise unmolested. The place looks good for a night’s rest. So, I look around, and find a chest. Of course I’m curious. Inside I find a cloak,5 fancy, buff, nice trim around the edges. Am I greedy? I can sense something special about it.

I drop my battle rattle and try it on. I feel sheltered, though it feels as fresh as silk. The shine is a little loud. So, I put my own cloak over it, secure my things, and curl up in the chest.

I must be getting bigger. Another finger and I won’t breath in here. I’m wondering if there is a way to charm the box to be bigger on the inside when I feel the weight of the day weigh on me.6

No, not the weight of the day. Someone is trying to lull me to sleep. Ha! But it’s telling me something is going on here. Are the people who drove this family out still at work, here? Let’s find out.

I can feel the wight of a body outside the chest. I hear it open, carefully, trying not to make a sound. My eyes are only just open enough for me to see a huge7, orchish man with an ugly scar across his face reach in and lift me on his shoulder.

Time to play.

With a new Marvel show to look forward to every couple of months, it would seem like Marvel would soon run out of ideas to the uninformed fan. However, it’s actually quite the opposite. Along with Loki and Hawkeye (which are awaiting release) and Ms. Marvel and She Hulk, (which are currently being filmed), there is a whole slew of shows that are getting the Disney+ treatment.

While fans would love it if these characters could get their own show, this current slate will take fans all the way through to the end of 2022. Whether they are spin-offs of shows that fans haven’t even seen yet, beloved comic book series, or even second seasons of shows that fans thought were limited, there’s so much to look forward to.

8 Echo

Though there are some mistakes from the movies that the show needs to avoid, Hawkeye is shaping up to be one of the most action-packed shows from Disney+, and it could rectify some of the problems that the MCU encountered with the character. But one of the most interesting bits of information revealed about the show is that Alaqua Cox will be playing Echo, a superhero who is deaf and has photographic reflexes.

And she isn’t only going to be in Hawkeye, but her own spin-off show is in development too. She could also make an appearance in the other shows in development, as she has a history with Moon Knight and she was a part of the Secret Invasion narrative.

7 Moon Knight

Though many people haven’t heard of the character, Moon Knight could be one of the most exciting new heroes in the MCU, as the character is like Marvel’s answer to Batman. Moon Knight is a millionaire who uses his wealth to build the tools he needs to fight crime, and he’s also an expert detective.

Oscar Isaac will be portraying the character, and it’s currently in pre-production. The shooting hasn’t started yet, but it’s due to begin very soon with filming planned in Budapest.

6 Loki Season 2

Though the first season of Loki is yet to even hit Disney+, season 2 is already in development. After the two trailers and about a thousand different logos, Loki is one of the most anticipated Marvel shows of them all.

Considering how all of the shows are presumably limited series, it’s a load off knowing that some of the shows may get a second season. It also hints at the quality of Loki, as the studio heads must be happy with the result if season 2 is already in development without waiting to see the fans’ reception.

5 Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion has been hinted at for a few years now. Ever since the Skrulls featured in Captain Marvel, comic book fans were speculating on when their classic story would be told in the MCU.

The series will center around Nick Fury getting to the bottom of the 'invasion,' and will see Talos as well as several other characters appear. No one even knows even if Fury and Talos will be on the same side. The show has just entered pre-production, and filming will be taking place at the end of 2021.

4 What If... Season 2

Loki isn’t the only show that already has a season two green-lit, as the second season of What If... has been thrust into development. However, it’s hardly surprising as the show is essentially a bunch of alternate realities.

Based on the past 20+ movies in the series, there are an infinite amount of ideas to explore. Given that What If could plant Spider-Man in the Battle of New York that was in The Avengers or even follow Thanos becoming a member of the iconic team, the show could go on for several seasons.

3 Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special

Currently in pre-production, the Holiday Special probably won’t be entering production for a good while, as director James Gunn has his hands full at the minute. He’s currently promoting Suicide Squad and shooting the HBO series spin-off, Peacemaker. But once all that’s done, he will be back in the MCU and it will be Guardians season.

With many of the MCU shows being limited series, Holiday Special is very limited, as it’s a one-off episode. And though it’s far away, Holiday Special is one of the few shows being worked on that has a scheduled release, (which is late 2022, presumably in the holiday season, ahead of the 2023 release of Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 3).

2 Ironheart

Being described as the new Iron Man, Riri Williams (also known as Ironheart) is just a kid in the comic books and will likely be one of the youngest superheroes in the entire franchise.

Her and Tony Stark’s own protege, Spider-Man, are so young to be fighting crime, but the Ironheart show, which is currently in development, will probably play on this. And given how Riri builds her own suit out of Stark’s armor in the comics, it could fill that Iron Man-shaped hole fans have in their hearts.

1 Untitled Wakanda Series

Black Panther director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that there will be a Wakanda series, and it’s exciting because of the stories it could explore.

Information on the series is currently unknown, as there isn’t even a title yet, but given how the Dora Milaje turned up in Falcon and the Winter Solider, it will tie in nicely with everything that’s going on over at Disney+. And now that Zemo is locked up in Wakanda, chances are he will show up again.

New on Sports Illustrated: COVID-19 Is Having an Impact on the Market for Veteran Contract Extensions

While Jamal Adams and Dak Prescott in the news, it's worth noting that uncertainty over the salary cap is clogging up the market. Plus, notes on Day 1 of the NFL's Quarterback Coaching Summit.

It’s Monday afternoon, let’s go …

• With Jamal Adams’s contract situation in the news, it’s certainly worth looking into how slow the pace of veteran extensions has been in general this offseason. Digging through it, I could find just three examples of guys getting big-time extensions with years left on their deals since America went into lockdown, without a trade being part of it (DeForest Buckner and Darius Slay got paid as part of trades). One was Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey, another was Texans OT Laremy Tunsil and a third was Bills S Jordan Poyer (whose deal was done before things went really crazy). Meanwhile, contract-year stars like Joey Bosa, Jalen Ramsey, Ronnie Stanley, Ryan Kelly, Alvin Kamara, Dalvin Cook, Chris Godwin, George Kittle, Keenan Allen, Patrick Peterson, Von Miller, and, yes, Adams are waiting for theirs. So the natural question: Is this COVID-related? And the answer is yes. The looming revenue shortfall doesn’t just make cash an issue for some teams, it also makes projecting the cap a problem. If there are big losses in 2020, that means the league and union will have to borrow from future years to keep the 2021 cap level to this year, which could mean ramifications reaching into 2022 and ’23. You may remember back in 2010 and early ’11, teams were hesitant do long-term deals for guys because of salary cap uncertainty. Same thing, to a degree, this year. Which might mean a lot of guys waiting a while for deals. And that could add an interesting twist to the seasons of some teams.

• And that brings us to Dak Prescott, and how the uncertainty over the cap might make it tough to project how a deal at $40 million per season will be accounted for in the coming years. Let’s say he does a deal with flat cap numbers. And let’s say, absent the pandemic, the cap was going to be around $270 million in 2023, which may be conservative based on the expected influx of TV and broadcast money. Under those conditions, Prescott’s deal, then in its fourth year, would account for 14.8% of Dallas’s cap. Now, let’s say, the coronavirus impact knocks the cap number in 2023 down to $220 million. In that case, Prescott’s deal is accounting for 18.2% of the team’s cap. That’s a pretty massive difference, when you consider this is one of 53 contracts. And it doesn’t mean the Joneses won’t get Prescott done. But it does explain why it could complicate things for him, and the other 13 guys who are currently franchised.

• Speaking of that, Prescott became the ninth franchised player (and 10th tagged player, if you count Cardinals transitioned RB Kenyan Drake) to sign his tender. That leaves five guys unsigned in the group: Bucs OLB Shaq Barrett, Bengals WR A.J. Green, Chiefs DT Chris Jones, Jaguars DE Yannick Ngaukoe and Broncos S Justin Simmons. All the tagged guys have until July 15 to do deals. So what’s the difference for these five? They can wait until Week 1 to sign, if they’d like, without losing a dime, because they’re not under contract.

• I really enjoyed Day 1 of the NFL Quarterback Coaching Summit (a joint venture by the Black College Football Hall of the Fame and the NFL), which I wrote about in last week’s GamePlan, so here are some good tidbits. Titans coach Mike Vrabel was the first speaker, and he dove into his philosophy on leadership (“We will treat you the same as you treat the team”), and how to interview (he passed out iPads on his interviews, rather the traditional “book” that coaches keep) before explaining keys in assembling a staff. I thought maybe the most interesting part was how he said having diversity of race and background on hand was important, to give a staff the best chance of reaching every individual player on the roster. Also, he mentioned how it was important to support the ambitions of assistants, and that losing them to promotion “means you’re hiring the right people,” and he listed the trainer with the GM and owner among the most important relationships a head coach has. There was also this, on the idea of culture: “When you’re winning, culture is easy. … Culture is what you look like at the worst moment. I hope everyone has a good culture at 7-1, but what does it look like at 2-5?”

• Also great was a panel hosted by my buddy Steve Wyche of NFL Network, one that included Steelers owner Art Rooney II, Giants owner John Mara, former Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome, Bucs coach Bruce Arians and Texans limited partner Javier Loya. Both owners acknowledged the trend toward offensive coaches, and it was interesting to hear Mara admit that he’d fallen victim to those sorts of things in the past. “A lot of us have fallen into that trap, looking at the Sean McVay, the Kyle Shanahan, and you think you’re just going to get the next one,” Mara said. “I look at the head coach now as more of a CEO. I don’t care if he’s an offensive play-caller or a defensive play-caller.” Rooney echoed the point, saying that looking at the Steelers’ stability, from Chuck Noll to Bill Cowher and now to Mike Tomlin, there has been a common thread. “The most important thing all three of them had in common, they’re all great communicators,” Rooney said. “If there was one thing we were always looking for in a head coach, it would be that.” Rooney also advocated for finding a way to slow down the process of coach hiring (it’s how he found Tomlin, even with legit candidates in house), though he added that he understood how competition for guys makes that idea difficult to implement.

• Arians, for his part, was passionate on the call. He said doing your job well, whatever that job might be at the moment, should come first, because that’s how you build respect among your peers. “Respect among your peers is the most important thing,” he continued. “I had respect among my peers, I didn’t give a damn if I got a job.” So what difference can that respect make? Arians recalled telling anyone who’d listen, on Vic Fangio, “If he’s not at the top of your list, you’re missing the boat.” Arians also pointed out how his very diverse staff is made up of a lot of guys he identified as potential coaches when he had them as players, which is something he hopes coaches get more aggressive doing. “These guys all played for me, so I had a long pool of guys I worked with,” Arians said. “You don’t hire strangers in my office, you hire guys I trust.”

• Another point of discussion was how narratives (i.e. hot candidates) can drive coaching searches. That’s where Newsome jumped in, explaining that the Ravens always keep lists of coaches of interest. “We create our own lists,” Newsome said. “We come to a collective agreement on the people we want to interview, and that’s based on the information we get when we talk to our area scouts, and our coaches and people around the league.” That, he mentioned, is how they found an Eagles special teams coach to be particularly intriguing. John Harbaugh’s been a pretty good hire.

• Sorry to sink the whole column into this—but it really was a pretty awesome deal, and there’s more coming Tuesday. Among the other parts of Monday’s festivities: Ex-Browns coach Hue Jackson with a detailed breakdown on the first 30 days on the job for a head coach; Saints assistant D.J. Williams on being a quality control coach; Stanford OC Tavita Pritchard on QB drill work; and Maryland OC Scottie Montgormery and Bucs OC Byron Leftwich on staff/coordinator dynamics. (I’ll try and get you some more info Tuesday on Twitter.)

• One thing from Falcons coach Dan Quinn, left over from this morning’s column, that I found particularly fascinating: He’s going to build all the possibilities he can think of for the fall of 2020 into his training camp schedule, and that means all of them. “What I do know is the teams that adjust the best are gonna be the ones that preform the best. Because what we’ve all seen is there’s been a lot of moving parts and things have changed, so there’s gonna be change during the season—players out due to COVID and all that,” Quinn said. “So during camp, when we do get together, we’ll have time where, and I’ll do it for myself first, OK, I’m out, or the playcaller’s out, where we keep showing them, here’s where adjustments have to take place, and we’re able to hit them, so we have contingency plans.” Pretty smart thinking there, and it’s not exactly hard to conjure a scenario where such a contingency plan might have to be enacted.

• The NFL re-opened its New York office on Monday. So if you want some good news on where all this is headed, there’s some for you. And, by the way, the Raiders opened their facility in Nevada, too, which means they’ve officially left California after spending their first 60 seasons in the nation’s most populous state.
