Prompt #14: Attrition
((In which the writer learns there’s a theological definition, pertaining to Contrition, and also maybe riffed off The Decemberists a little cuz rhymes are hard and who has time for that. Now on Ao3))
The sound of heavy footsteps from the hall outside Howart’s chamber made him look up from his reading and realize how very late it was. The candle burned low as the stars outside the window glimmered in the pitch sky.
Perhaps the visiting Inquisitor required something; in which case, Howart had best check. The Inquisitor had been forgiving so far of Howart’s youth and inexperience in his assistant position to the elder priest of this parish. Yet he had also made it clear he expected Howart to learn, quickly, how to anticipate his needs.
Howart shoved his feet into boots and threw on his robe, adjusting it as he hurried out the door.
There was no one in the short corridor, but dim lights flickered in the sanctuary. Howart hurried that way. “Sir, is there aught that—Oh!”
It was not the Inquisitor standing before the altar of Halone. A tall elezen man in dark armor slowly turned to look at Howart. A fit elder, his hair was all iron gray, and his eyes piercing. “And what have we here?” He asked in a deep, gravelly voice.
Howart stumbled back against the wall, eyes bulging. He had grown up in the Brume, before making it into the seminary. He was familiar with the stories, the warning rhymes and gruesome songs.
'Cause everyone knows
If you stray from Halone's light
The dark wind will blow
Bringing the shadows alive tonight
Their swords split the wicked from the good
Dark knights accept penance only in blood
“Fury’s Grace,” Howart whispered as the dark knight eyed him. “Are you here to kill me?”
The older man looked him up and down, then harrumphed. “And why should I want to do that, son?”
“I-I-I tr-try to be good—”
“Do you now?” He tilted his head, studying Howart. “And why do you choose good, young priest?”
Howart swallowed, caught off guard. “Well, because…it’s what we’re supposed to…do?” What an elementary answer! Yet all his years of study seemed to have fled his skull.
The old knight smiled, like a dragon sizing its prey. “Indeed. Though what constitutes ‘good’ seems to be up for debate.”
“But it isn’t!” Howart blurted. “The polities make it clear how we are to treat our fellow man! To be kind a-and charitable, to help our neighbors!”
“Well they haven’t ground you down yet,” the knight muttered. “Keep to those polities, boy. Eternal reward in Our Lady’s Halls awaits those who keep such faith.”
“Lest the Hells take thee,” Howart answered automatically, biting his tongue as the knight threw him a sharp glance.
“Is it for fear of divine retribution that we should do good acts?”
“No!” Howart replied. “A-at least, not entirely; we should want to do good for its own sake, a-and repent our wrongs because they are wrong, and w-we wish to be right with Her. I figure for most, though, there will always be a bit of fear. ‘Tis natural. Isn’t it?”
The knight considered that for a moment, a sad smile on his lips before he turned away. “Aye, lad; I believe it is. You ought to return to your chamber, and tell no one that you saw me. Understand?”
“Y-yes.”
“Good. Fare thee well, young priest. Keep your faith.”
The knight strode out of the sanctum, leaving Howart alone.
He slid to the floor, knees to his chest, and tried to steady himself for at least a quarter bell. Eventually, however, he got up, leaning on the wall for support. He made his way down the little hall to his chamber, pausing to listen.
Silence.
After a moment’s debate, he went into his room and locked the door and shuttered the window.

In the morning, Howart woke early, bleary eyed and yawning. He swiftly handled his ablutions and went to the small kitchen to prepare breakfast for the priest and their guest. Once ready, he woke his senior, and then knocked upon the Inquisitor’s door.
It was not properly latched, so swung open. The smell and sight of the blood struck Howart like a physical blow, and he fainted.

As D’alia sips the steaming tea, her mind wanders not for the hundredth time to the letter that has been burning a hole in her bag after returning to Kugane again, lovingly scrawled in a young girl’s handwriting and begging her response. She’s been meaning to sit down with it for the past week, but she has scarcely had a moment to even breathe. Instead, she mulls its contents over in her head, no longer needing to read it to recall her exact words, but one section in particular has been niggling at her since first laying eyes on it.
Sid is still a chocobo’s arse. (I think he misses you, too, but he won’t admit it. You know how he gets). Myste and I are looking out for him, though, so no need to worry.
D’alia can almost hear the exasperation in Rielle’s voice and imagine the roll of her eyes even with the girl currently oceans away from her. It brings the ghost of a smile to her weary lips, though it vanishes as swiftly with yet another pang of guilt. Too much of it hounds her these days. For leaving the three of them behind for a budding war so far away from them. For sharing a bed with Sidurgu and withholding the fondness that has bloomed in her heart, too cowardly to face it, even lying to herself that she does so with good reason.
The former greatsword of Ser Ompagne Deepblack looms in her peripheral where it rests, freshly oiled and sheathed, beside her cross-legged form. ‘Twas a parting gift from the man whom she hasn’t heard from except through Rielle’s letters. It weighs heavy over her, even without lifting the steel in her hands.
