Even though I will hate overwatch 2 and blizzard forever (and of course have very little to none hope for d4) but while the hype is huge and it's the first day of the game I might as well play a little just to remember the good old days...

Diablo Immortal celebrates another milestone and gives away gifts
Diablo Immortal celebrates another milestone and gives away gifts
Diablo the Immortal overcame 20 million installs on Android, iOS, and PC, Blizzard boasted over the weekend. As you can see, Dark World Reaper’s free-to-play interest is on the rise, though opinions about the game aren’t getting much better due to microtransactions in end-game content. Blizzard decided to give away about this bonuses, which consist of the legendary coat of arms, gold and other…

Animation Night 165: New Gods
嘿朋友动画的晚上正在上映电影!
One day I'll make a new friend who speaks Chinese and I can ask to come up with a different intro for donghua-related posts ;p
Long time Animation Night viewers might remember Animation Night 102 a little over a year ago, in which we watched a film called 新神榜:哪吒重生 (New Gods: Nezha Reborn) - not to be confused with other recent Nezha-related films like Ne Zha.
And it was pretty sick. Essentially you've got a CGI film set in a kind of FF7-like dieselpunk world in which various mythological figures now run crime syndicates or ride cool motorbikes. The film followed someone who turns out to be the reincarnation of Nezha - where Nezha's old enemy, the East Sea Dragon King, is also reincarnated as a kind of mafia kingpin who doesn't know to leave well enough alone, and picks a fight, hoping to stop the new Nezha fully incarnating.
Tumblr media
As CG films go, there's not a lot to compare it to - except perhaps Lupin III: The First, which also has the kind of smooth, slightly stylised figures and fancy effects. It was a bunch of fun, lots of twists and turns, guys who look like Sun Wukong but aren't (...maybe?), betrayals, and of course plenty of slickly choreographed fantastical martial arts.
Well, sure enough, Nezha was the first in a series! The second film in the series, New Gods: Yang Jian came out last year...
Tumblr media
This one focuses on another character from the Investiture of the Gods, Erlang Shen (二郎神), who's got a bunch of other names, notably Yang Jian (楊戩), which is the name he takes in Investiture of the Gods. I definitely needed to read up on this guy, so here's a primer: Erlang Shen's a god, nephew to the Jade Emperor, and a rather righteous one, associated with traits like purity, decency, and slaying monsters. Physically, his major trait is the truth-seeing third eye in the middle of his forehead; he also likes to carry a three-pointed spear, and his signature technique is '72 eartly transformations', i.e. turning into pretty much anything.
In Investiture, he shows up as a discple of the immortal Yuding Zhenren (玉鼎真人) during Chapter 40, in which Jiang Ziya battles the four 'Diablo Brothers' Mo Lihong, Mo Liqing, Mo Lihai and Mo Lishou, essentially a bunch of evil wizards who are causing havoc. Now, bear with me here. Mo Lishou has a powerful flying mink (or maybe an elephant). Yang Jian deliberately lets himself get eaten, and then when Lishou sends the mink out to attack, he transforms inside its stomach, popping it from the inside as it's about to fight Jiang Ziya.
Then, Yang Jian transforms himself into the mink, and uses this disguise to get close to the brothers and steal a magic umbrella from Mo Lihong, giving Jiang Ziya the chance to win the battle. Pure TTRPG player strategems here honestly. Love it.
He also shows up in Journey to the West, in which he's sent to try and deal with the Sun Wukong problem. They have a classic transformation battle, which Yang Jian eventually wins by seeing through Sun Wukong's clever disguise as a temple, and teaming up with Laozi (yeah¸ the Tao Te Ching guy) to capture him.
All in all, Yang Jian is not a god to be trifled with.
Tumblr media
However, the main story about Erlang Shen/Yang Jian is none of these, but a folktale called The Magic Lotus Lantern, in which he plays the role of antagonist.
The Magic Lotus Lantern tells of the goddess Huayue Sanniang, who falls in love with a mortal scholar called Lui Yanchang. Her older brother Erlang Shen, here a god, does not approve, to the point that he's willing to fight her about it. However, Huayue Sanniang wins the fight using her magic lotus lantern, and marries Liu Yanchang. Together they have a child called Chen Xiang. With me so far?
Unfortunately, Erlang Shen isn't about to take this whole thing lying down. After seven years, he tracks them down by the light of that same lantern, and briefly abducts Chen Xiang, before stealing the lantern and sealing Sanniang under a mountain (Mount Hua).
Nine years later, Chen Xiang - now 16 - learns what happened to his mum. He goes on a journey running into a number of mythological figures, including Sun Wukong, who teaches him martial arts. Indeed, Sun Wukong is like you know what kid you're pretty strong, I'll make you a big old axe to get your mum out of that mountain. At the end of it all, Chen Xiang goes and battles his uncle, and loses... but at the last minute he gets a special lotus lantern powerup, which gives him the chance to win the battle and free his mum from the mountain.
youtube
Incidentally, if you will permit a tangent (that is at least animation relevant lmao) - this story was adapted to animation in 1999 as 宝莲灯 (Lotus Lantern), and in fact that's quite a notable film in itself. To briefly tell the story again, from the 50s onwards, the vast majority of animation in China happened under the roof of Shanghai Animation Film Studio. However, during the Cultural Revolution, most of the major animators at SAFS such as Te Wei were cast as reactionaries sent to the countryside to do hard labour, practicing drawing only in secret. Chinese animation entered a period where the only permitted form was propaganda films in a narrowly defined realist style.
Following the end of the Cultural Revolution, many of these animators returned to the studio, making celebrated films like 哪吒闹海 Nezha Conquers the Dragon King (1979) as well as all sorts of short films celebrating an end to their ordeal and railing against artistic censorship. However, the studio's output - and Chinese animation in general - declined in the ensuing decades, with Chinese studios mostly doing outsourcing work and younger audiences turning to anime and western animation. So far so familiar.
In 1992, the studio started to reorganise itself along Western lines, collaborating with a company called Prrfect Animation from San Francisco. [This information comes from an article in Animation World Network, which is incredibly light on details. I can't find any other mention of Prrfect Animation outside of its connection with SAFS.] The studio would soon become part of the new Shanghai Film Group Corporation.
And in the middle of that period comes this movie - a kind of turning point for donghua. You can a restoration on Youtube, albeit unsubbed. Visually it's definitely got traces of the Cultural Revolution-era style, narratively it hews fairly close to the Mouse's formula complete with songs; indeed, allegedly this movie beat them at their own game in 1999.
Anyway, we're not watching this movie tonight - vibeswise it would be a weird combo, and it's going to take a little work to find suitable subs and mux them in, but put a pin in this, we might just come back to it.
Tumblr media
So what about this film? In this world, Yang Jian is now living a quiet life as a bounty hunter. Here's the official English-language plot summary, which is very brief:
Twelve years after imprisoning his sister underneath a mountain, Erlang Shen, a god known for his all-seeing third eye, now works as a bounty hunter. A woman hires him and his crew to prevent his nephew, Chenxiang, from obtaining a magical lotus lantern that holds great power.
Beyond that? I can tell you that at some point he wears a fedora. Look, it's in that gif right there. Yeah, I'm flying a little blind on this one ^^'
As things turned out, I didn't end up seeing this at Annecy, since it clashed with Rintarō's new short film... but fortunately, it is now available in the usual places. So the plan tonight is pretty simple: we will be watching both New Gods films, first a reprise of Nezha and then the new Yang Jian.
Also! We're actually on time! I'm gonna go live a lot earlier than we've managed lately, namely 8pm UK time, which is about 3 hours from this post (if you're in the States, that will be midday Pacific time, 3pm Eastern time). The place is, as ever, twitch.tv/canmom. Hope to see you there~

Diablo IV's free-to-lvl20 trial week is not nearly enough for me to make a proper judgement on Diablo IV, and of course even at 50% off I can't afford to buy it right now (I otherwise would have, probably, because I'm a sucker and also because see below screenshot), but this is how I feel about it now that I have finally had a chance to form my own opinion:
you know, as much as I fucking hate that half (HALF) the nearly-100gb download is due to the insane size of high-resolution textures, at least they let me choose to forgo downloading them (if I were actually buying the game, I'd put up with it, but I don't need my free trial to be on fucking Ultra lmao)
that is one of my new favourite opening cutscenes (also doing the Leo Dicaprio point at the poor scholar guy. hey! I know you. what other know-yet-more ass motherfucker would be in that particular position but my Can Calah)
*playing* hmm. this feels familia-- ooooh, I see, so Diablo Immortal truly was a preview of non-mobile releases to come :/
genuinely interested in the storyline, which opens me up for typical Blizzard disappointment, but at least I wouldn't be surprised if it started flagging in Act 2 or 3
Traversals is cute
I tried a couple of dungeons and I did like the way they were laid out. class-specific boss drops is interesting
dunno how I feel about the skill trees yet (I did think having a separate tree for skeletal summons was intriguing) but at least it seems to remain somewhere in between overly simplistic and batshit inscrutable. also yay I still get to explode corpses (listen. that is always my main attack as necro LOL 💀💥💀💥💀💥)
not gonna lie, this is the main thing that makes me wish I could keep playing:
Tumblr media
character creation! I got to make a nearly true-to-life Anansi Surana! for the first time in any game! confused about the body sizes, though; I get the impression that you can be fat but only if you're a Barbarian or a Druid?? like, okay. again, typical Blizz type shit, but lol. whatever. hi, Anansi! let's go explode some corpses!

Watching Overly Sarcastic Productions and thinking about immortal roommates tonight... Ava's origins are extremely murky and will remain so, but if we want to imagine something, we might imagine Minoan Crete, which would put the time of her birth at around 1900 BCE or even earlier (an absolutely mind-boggling number of years ago). Ava will never confirm it in so many words, but she'll make references/jokes to bulls and volcanos every now and then that make Bea go 👀👀👀. That's if we want her origins to be semi-based in real history and not something completely out there like the Kaktusverse or something.
whoops, only just now saw this and this, and to answer the latter rq because i feel it might be weird to answer it now but it feels ruder to not, but fav genres are mostly like first person shooters, + street fight esque hames, RTS gamex & platformers
Tumblr media
haven’t and don’t play many games, so fav games would probably be spiderman ps4/2018, minecraft, super smash bros, kotor, & command and conquer generals + earthworm jim 1 & 2. not a fav but diablo 2 is immensely fun
i keep meaning to branch out, i wanna try more of the what’s it’s name, a tier or w(e games like bioshock, skyrim, mass effect, god of war, assassins creed (bc defo agreed on the hot women + the historical setting is defo interestujg), portal
or something
also pls do elaborate on the skydrim modding 👀)
anyway back to the program
Ava: how do you know i was around when the minoan crete was around
also ava: *has a bunch of misc random bull & bull themed paper weights & knick knacks & plushies scattered theoughout the apartment esp on ava’s side of the bedroom*
also ava: beatrice, lilith, you won’t *bull*ieve it- beatrice & lilith: you got arrested again didn’t you?
GL-18200
real ava origin is that she just spontaneously started existing out of nowhere /j
she’s literally older than the universe itself
no but more seriously i feel a bit like: (see below meme) because i don’t know too much about it but am 👀👀👀 regardless
Tumblr media
also what’s the kaktusverse? 👁️
ava & lilith and probably later on bea defo got up to so much crimes because whenever they got caught by local law enforcement *mushroom voice* you cannot kill me in any way that matters
some random bits
keep meaning to mention but 1) lilith was the daughter of a military leader
lilith pre vampirification was like, briefly a military leader, mostly through coercion because the forces she was commanding, b4 she cane into command, were loosing badly, the town (probably lilith’s hometown) was almost destroyed and while they already had vv few competent peoplr let alone leaders among them (tbf they really didn’t have a need for em, but then the town was ambushed), even the few were either injured or dead so when they noticed lilith still being alive, and thanks to knowing about her dad + thx to lilith’s dad, knowing that lilth had showed a good amount of aptitude in fighting and military strategy shit, they coerced her (probably through threatning some friend or family of hers) into helping “just to fight off the invading forces” and so they did
but the forces wanted lilith to help them invade other places to “recoop looses” and what not, so that wasn’t the end of the coercion
lilth ended up faking her death so she could get out of the deal without putting her friend/s and(or family at risk, but it also meant she couldn’t return home to keep them out of danger
And then not long after that, like a year or two later lilith became a vampire
i think ava lilith & beatrice all probably need to skidaddle off by themselves every so often (to varying ampunts and degrees obv), and while ava & lilith are mutually aware of that and did the majority of the communication shit over it a while ago, beatrice isn’t on the same page
So a bit into beatrice formally moving in with ava & lilith, she just kinda gets antsy, in large part because the mental gymnastics of convincing herself people don’t care or don’t care very much, are at an all time high and in all honesty, while it might seem counter intuitive ava & lilith’s near constant prescencex are making it worse
but beatrice can’t manage to make herself say that until one day she ends up turning full tail (literally) and just is like 🏃‍♂️
lilith finds her a bit later at some mcdonalds or some fast food place (thanks to the becoming a werewolf stuff, beatrice has a lot bigger appetitie that she’s still adjusting to which means there’s a good few times where beatrice unwittingly finds herself suddenly feeling weak from not enough food and so ends up just having to go with the closest source of food she can find that won’t take her a bunch of effort to eat pr like poison her or anything ((ava & lilith, but esp lilith because she can relate makes sure to watch out for how much food beattice’s had in a day and do shit like keeping snacks on hand, eyc to try and minimize these incidents))) and just sits with beatrice until she’s ready to talk
beatrice & lilith are probably often the best at talking each other out of whatever dumb mental gymnastics they’re doing now because of how similar they are
also lilith & beatrice are, depending on who you ask surprisingly chaotic, they’ve accidentally gotten involved in a few disasterous shenanigans (which is a lot different from purposely doing so)
lilith started courting beatrice but completely forgot to mention so poor beatrice is vv confusedly flustered to death several times over by lilith
also ava 🤝 lilith 🤝 beatrice: god’s sleepiest soldiers
ava wants to spend time w lilith so she (im)patiently waits until nightime but she also wants to take full use of sunlight so she also is awake during the day, which, esp since ava gets tired a lot quicker than the average person means ava quickly learns to take several naps during the day or else be knocked out cold during the most inconvenient of times
sometimes those naps happen during night so lilith often decides to just nap w ava when that happens, and they never really change that system, so basically they’re vv used to taking naps several times a day, especially with each other so not napping would throw them off their rhythm and also they’re probably so used to the routine that they begin feeling sleepy when they see the other taking a nap, regardless if they woke u literally just an jour or so ago

Leigh plays Tellius prt 12
Tumblr media
I forgot how dramatic Geoffrey can be. But I guess with a best friend like Bastian, he would have to be a little dramatic.
Tumblr media
I love how Ike continues to value his work as a mercenary above everything else. Of course, I don't think this high level of integrity is common amongst mercenary groups, but the Greil Mercs have always been different. Like how Greil himself would take work without pay, if it meant helping out someone in need. They fight for people, not for ideals such as honor or glory.
Tumblr media
Now, I remember this map giving me so much trouble when I was a kid. This was the map that had me give up on not losing any units. I remember sacrificing Calill here, back in 2007, just so I could finally advance to the next chapter.
So when it came time to face this map again, 16 years later, I was feeling rather nervous.
Turns out I had no reason to be nervous, because I wiped the floor with all the enemies without issue. The boss gave me a scare at first, when I realized he was activating a skill in battle. I was afraid it was Resolve, but it turned out to be Parity, which was far less intimidating.
Tumblr media
What a gorgeous scene! I love this moment between Elincia and her retainers. Their friendship is so great, and I'm glad that they got to be reunited.
Tumblr media
This may be my shipper goggles blinding me again, but... was there something in that letter you don't want others seeing, Tibarn?
Tumblr media
I understand where he's coming from, but it is jarring to be see a young boy say "Kill 'em all!"
Tumblr media
Love this base conversation. Ike cannot be bothered to figure out what the hell Bastian is talking about half the time. And we learn that, though Ike's not a fan of desserts, he does drink tea! Unsweetened, I imagine, but still. Idk why, but I really love the idea of manly man Ike sitting down and having a cup of tea. Maybe he even used to have tea parties with Mist as a child. Too cute!
Tumblr media
Here comes Largo. I do think this entire conversation is hilarious enough to justify Largo's existence as a playable unit, but otherwise I have never used him and probably never will. That being said, I love his character development in Radiant Dawn, where he goes from a fame-seeking beserker for hire to a humble restaurant owner and doting father.
Tumblr media
I made Jill another custom javelin, and I named it Diablo because of how much it cost. Plus it's red, to match her armor!
Tumblr media
Funniest NPC? Funniest NPC.
Tumblr media
They don't go into it, but I can imagine that Soren must be really nervous at this moment. He's about to lead a discussion in front of an army that includes judgemental Begnion knights, beast laguz, and hawk laguz, including the king of the hawk laguz. That's a lot of pressure, especially for a character who doesn't feel comfortable talking to anyone that isn't Ike. He did a brilliant job, though! It probably helps that he has an A rank with Ike now, so his biggest insecurity has been put to rest.
Kudos, Soren! You're going to need that growing confidence when you're promoted to chief strategist of the Laguz Alliance.
Tumblr media
I love how Ike is just so taken off guard here. This conversation also raises some questions for me. Namely, how long do pegasi live? Didn't Elincia say that this one belonged to her great-grandmother? Are they just like... immortal?
Tumblr media
Time to seize Fort Pinell! This map is a little intimidating due to its sheer size, especially it doesn't have many choke points. However, I managed to beat this map on my first try. Luckily, they let you take a ridiculous amount of units, so I managed to just cross the field by lining up my defensive fighters in a long vertical wall to keep my squishies protected. Meanwhile, Ike, Soren, and Ranulf destroyed the entire upper right section of the map all by themselves.
Tumblr media
The Black Knight fight is coming!! I'm so nervous ahhhhhh
Tumblr media
It was also around this point that I realized that it would be nearly impossible to achieve one of my goals. I intended to get Ranulf to level 20 with as many capped stats as possible. Unfortunately, after doing the math, it looks like the only stats it's possible to cap are strength and defense, because you get him so late in the game, and his stat caps are so ridiculously high.
For example, you get him at level 9, which means he will only level up 11 times. In order to cap his strength, he has to level up strength 10 times, which is possible, but not without a lot of resetting. Meanwhile, in order to cap his defense, he has to level up his defense 13 times, which is only possible if you get him to level up defense Every Single Level, plus give him a Draco Shield for that +2 defense.
As much as I love Ranulf, I want to use that Draco Shield for someone else if I can. So in the end, I only capped his strength. And I was only able to do so by burning through the rest of my bexp. Ugh!
Was this worth it, or a massive waste of resources?
Probably the latter, but what's done is done.
Either way, Ike's 1v1 match with the Black Knight is imminent. I would like to save Nasir if I can, so I'm hoping that I get lucky with triggering Aether.

Blizzard has it's problems, don’t get me wrong.
But Diablo 4 is really good.
The Transmog system is nice, even if some of the items are bugged at the moment. The Story is great, and makes up for 3′s mistakes. The side quests all feel good, and the skills/skill trees are refreshing after 3′s and Immortals lackluster showing. The music still fucking owns, and the fact that they recorded each instrument seperately and plug and play at random for varieties sake is a nice subtle touch. It’s something that you won’t notice at first, but after going through the zones a bit, it helps stop THE GRIND from getting stale.
The only thing holding the game back is that map progress doesn’t carry over to a new character. I mean, thier rewards carry over, but like, if i’ve been to a place, don’t make me manually find it again, especially when there’s an option to SKIP the story with a new character if I’ve beaten it with another. Just let me farm sidequests and dungeons.

Design Disagreement
So I’m playing a game called Rise of Cultures, which is basically Civ series except not strategic and extremely chill? It’s got a research system but it’s on pretty heavy rails. Your main resources are Workers and research points and real-world time, and then...resources. Like, wool and bronze and stone and so on. And the whole thing boils down to, set workers to doing something, wait until it’s done, gather enough resources to build/upgrade the next thing or unlock the next research, if it’s a build/upgrade assign workers to it, on and on and ever upward.
There are two things I find kind of repulsive in the design.
First, it has various places where I’m pretty sure that by the math you get worse at something, in an oblique way, by upgrading the building that does it. This is...incredibly stupid.
The best example is the farms. You hit a certain upgrade level and farms now need 5 workers to man them instead of 4. But they only produce 10% more food now. At the point where this happens you have 4 farms and 18 workers. So if you upgrade your 4 farms you literally can’t produce as much, because you upgraded. Using all 4 farms to produce 300 every 2 minutes would get you 600 a minute. You upgrade and now you can only use 3 farms to produce 330 for 495 a minute, and you’re only using one less worker!
Second, it has different options for time scale of food gathering. You have one kind of farm that gives you food every 2 minutes, or 10, or 60. Then the other farm gives you food every 2 hours, or 4, or 6. As a general system I like this! It gives the player control over how much they want to interact, with the lower time counts giving extra flexibility for swapping your workers around to other tasks if you’re paying close attention to the game.
The problem is the ouptut. The game gives you more resources/minute for shorter gathers. At base level the 2-minute gather is about 100 food a minute, and the 6-hour gather is less than 50 food a minute. You’re allowed to queue up 3 gathers, so if you want to do the 2-minute gather you’re babysitting the game every 6 minutes or less, which is absolutely mind-killing. And because one of the things that holds up other tasks all the time is shortage of food, advancing quickly will call for getting food as fast as you can.
I respect that it’s not up to developers to actively stop players from playing in un-fun ways. If you make a strategy game you can’t reasonably stop players from using bad strategies that lose all the time. You can’t stop Pokemon players from collecting every Pokemon and trying to keep them all at the same level as they advance even though that becomes exponentially harder with time. You can only do your best to make sure all strategies are visible as possibilities, so the players are empowered to decide how they want to play, from super easy to nuzlocke.
But
a) This fact isn’t immediately obvious. The farm just presents 3 tiers, with Little/Medium/Lots of food as the reward and a tiny time cost underneath. So I’d been playing for over a week before I recognized that the food/time ratio was getting worse when you invested more time. and
b) This design, especially in a game where food can be a block on progression, recommends the worst way to play the game. You should be optimizing your game’s strategies, if you’re putting a thumb on the scale at all, toward recommending the most fun way to play. Unlike the player-hostile designs in, say, Diablo Immortal, or Neverwinter, this bad design doesn’t even serve the developers. The systems that reward you for coming back 1-2 times a day serve the developers great; They keep the whales engaged enough and 1-2 times a day is also how often they let the free players watch ads for in-game loot. Making players want to be constantly on will just lead to faster burnout.
c) Larger time investments have their drawback baked in. You’re committing your workers to be useless for all other stuff for X time. Cutting it short gives you nothing. All else aside, having the longer gather produce less per minute just feels wrong.
If you want constant engagement in your game you should include a minigame. You should be giving your player something to constantly do, in your game. You shouldn’t make it so players get more by manually telling their farms “yes, keep doing that” every 2-6 minutes.

Unrealistic Expectations
Tumblr media
I can’t help but wonder about something while joining the masses in doing mindless activities. Said activities done sometimes simply out of habit, constantly scrolling news feeds, social media, or YouTube. What I wonder many times while doing this is how we’ve become quite entitled in many aspects. While I can point to many different examples, this became extremely clear these last two weekends when I played the Diablo IV beta. Plus, gaming is a big theme on this blog of sorts, so I’ll stick to that. This opinion is gonna get a be spicy, if you will.
The amount of complaints for a game that is in Beta, not even a demo, but in beta, truly astounded me. Should this mean we don’t point out issues? Absolutely not. However, claiming you have been ripped off when getting access to a beta period because it “didn’t work right” is simply not valid. You got exactly what you paid for. Access to a beta. You’d think people in the glorious “PC Master Race” would understand what a beta even is and not say these things, but here we are. Now I have to be clear and even in doing so, someone will get mad. I think the same crap mentality goes into why one would be mad for sharing a difference in opinion. Activision-Blizzard is a company rotten at the core. They deserve much of the hate they get. Without getting into all the toxicity in the workplace and keeping it focused on the topic of gaming, they released Diablo: Immortal. One of the absolute worst games put out under the disguise of an awesome IP, just to nickel and dime people when it comes to the true replay value of a Diablo title. The end-game. The nonsense behind microtransactions, battle passes, and the like are issues gamers are very well aware of. Diablo IV is supposed to be the opposite along with a “cometic only” battle pass. I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise. I realize this is a risky move. One I’ve already dumped my money into. I’m not going to deny myself the enjoyment of a game I know I’m not going to avoid forever if at all because of nonsense they did that I have no control over. I’m sure it is the same stance people are doing with Hogwarts Legacy. I held my tongue on this because there is no point. We want to enjoy what we want to enjoy. Things aren’t as black and white as we sometimes like to think. Every choice to purchase or not purchase should be based on our own merits and this will also mean that some things we don’t purchase, due to similar reasons. If someone doesn’t buy D4 due to their shit treatment of workers, that would be legitimate. If someone doesn’t purchase Hogwarts due to the dismissal of trans rights seen in the game, I get that too. I’ll see many playing both games regardless and we need to let people enjoy things, so I shut the hell up.
Having gotten a bit sidetracked here, back to the main point. Why do many of us swear we are game developers or experts when we aren’t? Because we aren’t, what some may be doing is consuming facts from experts and sometimes expressing opinions solely based on that, without personal experience. Something that at least should be shared, if you’re going to present that kind of take, instead of presenting yourself like an authority figure on the matter. It’s crazy. Whether is it a game, TV show, whatever, the biggest issue are the keyboard warriors and trolls throughout. Maybe to some this is entertainment…but it actually holds no value and doesn’t lead to any productive discussion. I ignore these takes or choose not to engage, but I see them. They exist. I just find myself continuously shaking my head as a result. Getting the nonsense out of the way, my secondary thinking is even while I likely enjoy Diablo IV or really whatever else, am I making the most of my time?
Knowing gaming is a huge hobby of mine, I’m trying to make sure I do so with intent. Not just playing whatever is new and/or on sale. As I say this, I’m still a bit guilty of the latter point. Thanks Steam. Buying a Steam Deck that I love (free from a company bonus, btw) that I love doesn’t exactly help the matter. Where do I truly want my money spent? Am I doing it for the right reasons? Can I park my money in certain investments and put it to good use? You can do both but intent matters here. You’ve gotta have balance. If we all had a bit more of this, we wouldn’t be so quick I think to jump down someone’s throat for something that they don’t agree with. Gaming is turning into topics I like to avoid due to the amount of people with one way or no way mentalities. Said three topics are religion, politics, and sports. While people who can discuss these in a meaningful way exists, misery loves company and there are many looking for a fight. I’m just not interested in this anymore as it is no different than wasting time with whatever other time-consuming thing that is probably bad. If I do some of these very things in moderation and with an open mind, it becomes more fulfilling as well as staying true to myself.
By the time this goes live, I will have already purchased or am close to purchasing a Paperwhite. Why? I want to combine two things that are the core of my being outside of work. Gaming and finances. While a Paperwhite will not allow for gaming in the traditional sense, gaming has rich lore in book formats. Instead of worrying about potential challenge in a game, I can imagine it as presented instead. Sometimes I do this through YouTube by listening but then I just end up doing it too long. I want to avoid that where possible. I also want to read more on finances to enrich my life. I can do both in one place with the paperwhite. I am choosing the Paperwhite instead of a Kindle because I won’t be able to install apps that do the same things as my phone can already do. I’d be tempted to pick up the phone to check whatever it may be and consume accordingly. This is something I can take on the go. It would be more educational however, because I also have a Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch. If I actually want to play something, I can have that on the go as well. A theme I am embracing more and more by the day. A backpack with items of value to keep on the go, carry stuff for work, have a notepad to write down the important stuff. All this is like rediscovering myself. Seeing things in a new light. Maybe in clearing out the clutter, it leads to new habit and more meaningful connections with people I find myself talking to most often.
To conclude yet another post a bit scatterbrained but with a purpose, I simply say to anyone with eyes on this, take a moment for yourself. We seek hits of dopamine in several aspects of our lives. Are we managing this, or it is managing us? To circle back to Diablo IV, it is certainly the latter for people with nothing better to do than complain about a test period in a video game. Mindset is key for both what you consume as well as how you choose to treat yourself when having free time.

The new episode of our saga in Diablo Immortal is available! In this video we enter the Elder Rift. The Elder Rift is one of the main ways to acquire XP and high-level weaponry in Diablo Immortal. When activating the Rift, you are teleported to a dungeon full of enemies and with a simple objective: kill the boss before time runs out. This is a great way to evolve your character, so participate whenever possible.

Last night we had, 'The Game Awards' for this year. Unfortunately, my interest in the winners, as always was nil, especially knowing that Diablo 4 had something planned for the event. More suprisngly though were the amount of announcements that were made. So without further ado, these are the games I am actually HYPE for.

Banishers: Ghost of Eden came out of nowhere and I have a cheeky feeling much like A Plagues Tale, it might be the start of a new franchise. Set in the late 1600's- you get to play a pair of ghost hunters, Red and Antea. The interesting / cool thing is, Antea herself is a ghost (at least from what I could tell). The game is a 3rd person, story game and from the TINY glimpse of gameplay right at the end, this could turn out fantastic.

Hades, is awesome! I spent a good 2 weeks on/off trying to kill that not so humble father and failed 😢. Once it had dropped of gamepass I sort of let it be, that I would never get to defeat him. Now with the suprise announcement of Hades II it's time for me to jump back in and get ready. The sequel puts you in the shoes of Melinoë, the Princess of the Underworld, an immortal. The short trailer highlights a ton of new abilities, bosses, gorgeous artwork and more importantly more of that amazing music. I can't wait.

No Bioshock games in years and just like buses we are getting 2, in 2023. Well ok, not Bioshock per-say, but Judas, a brand new game by series creator Ken Levine, looks great. It doesn't tell us much, but is full of weird powers, 50s inspired robots, space and crazy combat. Exactly what the doctor ordered. I'll be keeping an eye out for this one.

Diablo 4. Diablo 4. DIABLO 4. Before we get into the trailer, we finally have a release date; June 6, 2023. And you know that pre-order button is being SMASHED. The trailer movie though.... Blizzard, do not miss when it comes to their cinematics, especially any relating to Diablo. Having recently heard from the previews, how important and intrinsic the story seems to be to Diablo 4, this trailer, somehow managed to elevate my excitement even more. It's a simple, short scene but it tells us so much. We're back in hell. What looks like Inarius, Archangel of The High Heavens leading a set of humans, to find and get to Lilith. We've never seen angels portrayed this way in Diablo. Inarius has this unnerving power about him. The demons are frightened of him, while the humans seemingly would follow him to their deaths. This is a man angel on a mission, and Lilith is in his sights. June 6 better hurry up.

Sea Foam ~ Disney Villain Recruiters Fic
“So I shall die,” said the little mermaid, “and as the foam of the sea I shall be driven about never again to hear the music of the waves, or to see the pretty flowers nor the red sun. Is there anything I can do to win an immortal soul?”
The ocean is large and beautiful, the sound of the crashing waves calms the ears of the worried crow as his emerald eyes stare at the figure standing on the water's edge, sad eyes staring back at him. Slowly and suddenly the male started to shrink and grow light with each ocean wave. The crow rushed over and grabbed hold of his dear friend, gasping when he feels the sea foam drip from his fingers. "No... No no no NO NO NO! Don't go please!" He plead and begged with each failed attempt to cling to him, his heart ripping apart like a cruel paper cut out of paper. He can hear the wicked cackling echoing around them as the life leaves the stormy ocean eyes before the full body turns to foam and float away in the ocean, leaving a broken hearted man left to cry and wail into the ocean skies.
Malfie gasped as he woke up, his green eyes readjusting slowly to the night of his room, his breath shaking in and out his lungs like a lost ghost within it's chambers. Slowly he sat himself up, a halo of dust dancing on top of his head, his stomach was swallow like he had just thrown out his hunger yet a hunger arose once more as his chest was tight and cold.
Soon, a small sob escapes gentle lips as his face twisted into a way of horrid pain and agony. More and more sobs left until he fully cried himself enough to start a bath filled with tears. Alone in a dark room he cries, unaware of a on looker with pain across a lovely face.
Malfie started his morning as he normally does, dressed and with a confidence fueled smile on his beautiful face. Light steps walked across the stone floors of his master's palace as he hurried his way to the entry way to leave out into the world.
"Malfie"
The crow stopped right away when hearing the elegant strong voice of his master, turning his head to see the beauty of whom she is standing tall by the stairs, her horns a gentle angelic form with the sunrays behind her. He quickly took a bow, "Yes my royalty?"
Maleficent stared down at him, her topaz yellow eyes cold with a fire within deep down the caves. Silence filled around them like a waltz. "You look tired." She finally spoke. Malfie couldn't help but let out a confused croak from the words not matching her tone. "I'm terribly sorry?" It didn't mean to sound more like a question of his own but it just rolled off his tongue.
The fae let out a long sigh, "Just be caution today."
A buzzy warmth filled the small chest as Malfie smiled and nodded. "Of course my royal Queen!" He said before he bid her a goodbye as off he went to town pass the large doors, his arms turning to large black feathered wings. "Diablo," Said Maleficent as she turned to her loyal crow who stands perched on a statue. "Due make sure he's safe." The raven jumped and flew away after Malfie, leaving the fae to watch and ponder a query. . . What caused such tears within her minion's face?
Tumblr media
Malfie landed right where he always has and made his way to the courtyard to see his fellow recruiters stand about. Among them his eyes stopped. The morning sun making white and light lavender hair look most glowing like sea form from the sea, the skin flush and more alive than first glace, focus yet tired eyes looking at a golden colored paper.
He felt his heart begin to play a little tune in his rib cage as a smile formed the moment he saw his best friend. Joe turned his head and catches the bird's look and gave a meek wave. Within a flash he was sea form before Malfie blinked a bunch to regain his original sight with a quickened sinking heart and fast breathing. His skin felt pale cold as he stopped smiling. He turned his head away from Joe's worried eyes and started walking away.
Above sitting on a roof is Diablo, watching the scene closely, opening his wings and flying after the younger to make sure he doesn't lose sight on him, seeing as Joe went after him as well.
Hidden with the shadows away from the others Malfie stands trying to settle the tears that threatened to burst out his eyes. "Malfie." The crow froze in stiffened shock as Joe's voice speaks behind him. He dare not move a single inch in fear of being spotted even though he already has.
The octopus walked over and firmly grabbed his wrist, twisting him around in a heel until they're face to face. Joe stared down at him, Malfie's eyes away from his own. He can't bring himself to look at those eyes of his one true best friend, his companion, his equal, and only see the dream he had over and over like a broken record. "Did I do something?" His words hurt Maflie. "Wh...What...?" "I said did I do something? Why are you avoiding me?" Usually Joe would do this tone in his voice to hide any other side of him behind a tough exterior like a crab with it's shell as Malfie was brave enough to see, but this time his voice was soft low and gentle like a comforting fire place within castle walls.
A sniffle escapes Malfie's nose as he finally looked up at him. "L...Looking at you make me sick..."
Joe's eyes narrow in sadness as Malfie cried and continued, "Y-You will leave me alone...like my flock...like my master soon enough...Like sea foam on the ocean waves you'll drift away from me...and I can't stand it..!" Malfie kept crying and crying, his voice now broken and unable to make normal words.
Suddenly, a warmth hit his cheek and then his mouth as their faces became close and near. His heart rate slowly went back to a happy rhythm while his body soon leaned in in relaxation as he pushed his lips back towards the cold yet warm ones against his. In perfect peace the memory of that dream disappeared... along with it the worries of his pains...
From above, the loyal raven watched before opening his wings and flying onward to the sky towards the castle he was once in. There seated in her throne the fae queen of power sat waiting for one of the two birds within her care, her yellow eyes shining in curiosity when Diablo seated beside her, his small head enjoy the pet of her finger curled. "So? What is it?" She asked, watching the bird scratch his wings with his beak before letting out some caws. Maleficent listened, her lips slowly growing in a straight line and her eyes began to warming with softness. "So it seems Malfie was worried of what the Sea Witch would do... How pitiful." She mumbled, glancing to the left wing where she saw her servant leave earlier that morning, her eyebrows narrowed and frown. "I'll have to give a little chat about the contract she has hold on that poor boy."

I think the most useful side effect of having "don't tell me what to do" as a foundational personality trait is that a lot of the hooks that mobile games, social media, and other predatory apps employ to keep people using them are completely repellant to me. I immediately get angry and lose interest
this is useful beyond a doubt but it's kind of annoying in specific circumstances. like I do want to keep playing Diablo Immortal because I find the ARPG shoot-and-loot gameplay loop to be fun and relaxing and I also weirdly like the way the Diablo formula was mobile-gameified? like it works for me somehow. but the mobile-gameification that doesn't work for me is all the log-in-daily-or-miss-out bullshit. my body refuses to comply on sheer principle. I haven't even finished the storyline yet at least let me finish the storyline bloody hell
