Zenzile Miriam Makeba
Zenzile Miriam Makeba (1932-2008), sometimes called Mama Africa, was a South African musician and civil rights activist.
Born in Prospect, South Africa to a Swazi mother and a Xhosa father, Makeba's early life was full of difficult events. When she was 18 days old, her mother was arrested, so Makeba spent the first six months of her life with her mother in jail. After moving to Transvaal, her father died and Makeba worked as a nanny. In 1949, she married a policeman, who beat her and then left her. She also had both breast and cervical cancer.
Makeba was interested in music from a young age--she sang in church in four languages (English, Xhosa, Sotho, and Zulu). She liked both South African and African American songs, and grew up listening to records of Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald. She started singing professionally as the only woman in men's groups, like the Cuban Brothers and the Manhattan Brothers. Makeba eventually joined the all-female group the Skylarks, where she became famous, though she received no royalties from this work.
She became internationally famous for her voice and her on-screen appearances, and Makeba travelled and lived in Europe and North America. In 1960, when attempting to return to South Africa for family funerals, Makeba discovered her South African passport had been cancelled and she was exile from her home country. Makeba continued to sing and and fight against South African apartheid in the United States, where she was critically successful but commercially unpopular. Her activism caused her to be declared a stateless person, as her South African citizenship was revoked, but throughout her life was granted honorary citizenship in ten countries.
Makeba became a diplomat and a symbol of African independence. She was invited to sing at many countries' independence ceremonies, including Kenya, Angola, Zambia, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), and Mozambique. She was a delegate to the United Nations and met many politicians.
In 1990, Makeba returned to South Africa. Mandela, whom she has also met personally, helped convince her to come back. She spent the end of her life working, fighting, and singing. She suffered a heart attack on stage in Italy, and could not be revived. She was remember as a genre-spanning singer-songwriter, one of the faces of the anti-Apartheid movement, and as a woman who believed in a bright future worth the struggle. Listen to some of her most popular songs and performances 1. Qongqothwane ("The Click Song") performed live 2. Pata Pata 3. Ndodemnyama we Verwoerd 4. Miriam Makeba's 1964 Speech to the United Nations

I used to believe, much like others, that I was born too late to explore and discover the earth.. but this week alone we have found a new sunken temple off the coast of Egypt full of artifacts that are fairly in tact. Every month someone finds more ruins of an ancient civilization we had no idea about in the jungles of South America. This week alone in Zambia we have found freakishly preserved 500,000 year old logs that were woodworked with VERY unnatural notches within them - which is nearly 200,000 years older than the earliest Homosapien fossil we've ever found, potentially making humanity much older than originally believed. There is an unbelievable amount of great mystery still out there to be discovered. The adventure and discoveries of our past and our future are endless.

By Jonathan Taylor
(Los Angeles Times) — Jet-lagged and exhausted, LeVar Burton rallied his youthful energy as he exited customs at New York’s JFK airport and climbed into a waiting limo. He had just traveled from the Zambezi River in Zambia, where he had filmed a segment for the April 4, 1982, episode of ABC’s “The American Sportsman.”
The car made its way from Queens to Manhattan, dropping him off at Central Park. He was there to shoot the pilot for a new public television show aimed at encouraging early learners to love books.
The show was to be called “Reading Rainbow.”
He was not entirely sure what the job was, and certainly not aware that it would become one of his signature roles. It didn’t matter. The son of a former teacher and a passionate believer in learning, reading, exploring and growing, Burton was all-in on this new adventure.
“Everything about it just made sense,” Burton says, more than 40 years later. “It was about literature and the written word, it was about kids, it was about having kids discover the power of literature through the medium of television and that was why ‘Reading Rainbow’ was such a radical departure from other shows of its era.”
From the moment he first met the “Reading Rainbow”crew, Burton demonstrated not one iota of star attitude.
“He showed up, got out of the limo, and I said, ‘Hey, how are you?’” Cecily Truett, co-creator, head writer and producer on the show for most of its run, recalls. “He said, ‘Well, I just got off the red-eye, so…’ I said, ‘Well, what can we do for you? How can we make you comfortable?’ He said, ‘You know, I’d love to have a glass of orange juice and a toothbrush.’ And that was it.
“He walked right on to the set, he ran through his lines and for the next 25 years he was on the set, on time, with his lines memorized....”
“For 155 shows,” her husband, Larry Lancit, another of the show’s creators, producers and directors, added.
Burton had to hurry back from Africa to New York because a skeleton crew was waiting to shoot the pilot episode, including anxious documentarians Truett and Lancit and fellow creator and executive producer Twila C. Liggett, a onetime elementary school teacher who had realized TV was the ideal medium to reach and influence young children. If “Reading Rainbow” delivered on its promise that a children’s show focused on the joy and value of reading could be set in the real America rather than on Sesame Street or in Mister Rogers’ neighborhood, it would get the blessing from PBS.
It did the trick. This month marks the 40th anniversary of the national premiere of one of the longest-running children’s shows in the history of public television.

Yknow what
Fuck it,gonna come up with a new post idea for every week. A Spotify Discover Weekly Top 5 to share the weird shit i listen to.
1. The Air-Conditioned Nightmare - Mr. Bungle. A wacky track that reminds me of the whole music style of Tally Hall and MM with a very tiny bit of LD sprinkled in there.
2. Thy Mission - The Garden & Mac DeMarco. Kept this baby on replay a few times, letting their chords and experimental ways carry me away. A Beautiful Combination of Indie and Experimental Rock
3. Love and Freedom - Keith mlevhu. A Classic from a Striking time in Zambian History. 1976 was when this Zamrock gem came out,12 years after Zambia gained independence from Britain.
4. Summer in a Small Town - Cleaners from Venus. "I'm not going mad, I'm not going mad." Perfectly sums up my feelings on this Psychedelic track,Astonishingly crafted by these English Aliens.
5. What's inside a Girl - Daughters. A very messy cover of the Cramps Classic..in a good way. The Psychobilly style is prevalent, with their Noise Rock roots creeping in there. They absolutely kill this cover, which (in my sole opinion) i find better than the original.
*Disclaimer:I am not a pro at discerning genres meticulously, but i say it as i hear it. Sorry if i got any die-hard fans upset.

Book review - Cry of the Kalahari by Mark & Delia Owens
Many of you probably already know Delia Owens as the author of Where the Crawdads Sings. It’s a book that I liked a lot, so I decided to read this book as well. It’s a memoir of the 7 years she and her husband Mark spent completely isolated in an uninhabited area of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve called Deception Valley studying wildlife. I enjoyed this book as well and learned a lot about the animals there. However, when I looked up Mark and Delia Owens to learn more about them, I found out that after this book was published they were involved in a very problematic incident in Zambia, and are still wanted for questioning over a murder that occurred there. I’m going to describe the book first and then describe what happened later.
The book has chapters supposedly written by Mark and supposedly written by Delia, but the tone of all are the same so it doesn’t really have 2 separate voices. It begins in 1974, when Mark and Delia first went to the Kalahari with very little of their own money and no one funding them. As the years passed by, they wrote letters to universities and zoological societies with their findings and secured grants that allowed them to buy radio tracking collars and a plane, but in the beginning all they had was a truck and their journey into the desert was quite dangerous.
Despite the truck breaking down, wildfires, losing their water supply due to a hole in the storage container, and almost running out of fuel many times, they managed to persevere there. Their main animal of study was the brown hyena. Very little was known about them compared to the larger spotted hyenas of the Serengeti. Their behavior was very odd, as they were thought to be solitary, but constantly left scent marks that other hyenas would find. Eventually, Mark and Delia discovered that they were not truly solitary, but the reason why remained unclear for a long time. In their own words:
“..after several months, a sketchy picture of their social organization began to emerge. We were sure that the 7 hyenas in the area were not solitary animals but members of a clan. Through muzzle wrestling and neck-biting contests, each had gained a particular rank in the social hierarchy, which was displayed and reinforced in greeting. Ivy, the only adult female of the group, was dominant...
Usually, when 2 hyenas met on a path, they would confirm their status through greeting, then separate. Neck-biting followed only when the status was not established, or when a hyena tried to rise through the ranks...
Lions, wolves, and other social carnivores usually sleep, hunt, and feed with at least some members of their group. But though the browns lived in a clan, they usually foraged and slept alone, only meeting with other group members occasionally, while traveling along common pathways or a kill. They have a limited repertoire of vocal signals, and none with which to communicate with over large distances, as do the spotted hyenas. This may be because the dry Kalahari air does not carry sound far, or perhaps because the territories are too large to transmit and receive even loud calls effectively...
This lack of a loud voice might seem to present a problem for animals who roam separately in jointly owned territory... However, the hyena’s well-developed system of  chemical communication through scent marking - pasting, as it is termed, probably takes the place of loud vocalizations...
So, the brown hyenas were a curious blend of social and solitary: They foraged and slept alone; they fed together at large carcasses, but carried away the remains for themselves at the first opportunity; they did not use loud vocalizations to communicate with each other, but did leave chemical messages. And, at least for a while, the females allowed the youngsters to follow them when they searched for food...
Despite the fact that they always foraged alone, brown hyenas, we now knew, we social - and quite social at that. But animals associate for adaptive purpose, not because they enjoy being together. Lions, wild dogs, wild wolves, primitive men, and spotted hyenas hunting in a group are able to kill larger prey than can a single individual. Brown hyenas were scavengers, for the most part, and they rarely hunted. But since they did not hunt together, why did they live in a clan and share large kills left by lions? Why did they need each other? Why did they socialize at all? There was a single answer for all these questions, as we were to discover.”
Aside from hyenas, the authors also made important discoveries about Kalahari lions and how they are different from Serengeti lions. The Kalahari is a much harsher environment, and therefore there is more mixing of lions between prides, and in droughts the prides often disband completely so the individuals can spread out over larger territories.
The level of detail the authors went into about all of the animas was amazing. The overall tone of the book was pretty calm. The authors focused almost exclusively on the animals, and I found the book to be a pretty relaxing read. Which makes what I found out about the authors more surprising.
‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘‘
So after this book was published, the 2 of them got kicked out of Botswana for criticizing the government too heavily. There was really no indication of this until the last chapters, when Mark and Delia explained the issue of the thousands of miles of  fencing meant to curb foot and mouth disease causing the deaths of thousands of antelope when they had to migrate to water during a 2 year drought. They said that the government was in general good about conservation given the abundance of wildlife reserves in the country, but they had to take this issue more seriously, and it would likely upset the cattle ranchers and ultimately not much would be done. They said that people warned them that they might get kicked out if they pressed the issue too hard, but it didn't sound like they believed it. But anyway, it did happen, and for their next research project they went to Zambia and studied elephants.
While there, Mark became heavily involved in anti-poaching campaigns. Delia apparently separated from him during that time due to his excessive risk taking. But ultimately they got back together, and published the book The Eye of the Elephant, which was another success. While they were in Zambia, ABC also did a news segment on them called “Deadly Game: The Mark and Delia Owens Story.” During that documentary, a poacher was shot and killed, and they aired this. The cameraman who shot the murder claims it Chris Owens, the son of Mark Owens and Delia’s stepson (who was never mentioned at all in the first book - sounds like Mark abandoned him those 7 years), who delivered the fatal shot. Several people have also accused Mark Owens of later dumping the body into a lake off an aircraft. It was never found.
Overall, it sounds like Mark may have been operating a shoot-to-kill poacher policy in a country that didn’t have one. Mark, Delia, and Christopher are all wanted for questioning in Zambia and are unlikely to return there. This all sounds eerily similar to the plot of Where the Crawdads Sing, where the main character Kya commits a “justified” murder, and never returns to the town where she was accused.

A Washington state mother was charged last week with assault of a child after it was discovered that her daughter was receiving excessive medical treatment for unverified conditions.
Sophie Hartman of the Seattle suburb of Renton, Washington, who is white, adopted two Black children from Zambia where she worked as a missionary, according to court documents obtained by Atlanta Black Star. The children were removed from her home on March 17, 2021. One of Hartman’s daughters was held at a hospital, and doctors at the medical center informed authorities of the child’s “suspicious medical history.”
Hartman carried her 6-year-old daughter to an estimated 500 medical appointments over the span of about five years, according to charging documents filed on May 24. Doctors said that as a result, she has received an “unnecessary medical procedure,” as well as a surgically implanted feeding tube, with a cecostomy tube, to flush out the intestines. Though doctors advised against it, the young girl was also committed to a wheelchair and wore leg braces at least as early as 2016, court documents said.
In 2018, Make-a-Wish granted the child a wish. In a video sent to the foundation, Hartman explained that her daughter had Alternating Hemiplegia of Childhood (AHC), a disease she said could cause her child to become paralyzed at any time.
“She can lose the ability to talk and go into all different types of seizures and have extreme pain. It’s really tough,” Hartman said in the video.
The 31-year-old mother also said that even the “best pediatric specialists” have no idea what to do, and that “…she needs access to oxygen because her breathing shallows and slows; she depends on her feeding tube when she’s unable to eat.”
Medical providers informed detectives that they did diagnose Hartman’s daughter with AHC, but only based on the symptom details that Hartman provided — symptoms that were only witnessed by her, according to search warrants.
A Seattle Children’s Hospital physician advised detectives that according to medical findings, it was likely that the child was not afflicted with the disease.
In 2019, “a group of (redacted) specialists and providers at Seattle Children’s Hospital” requested consultation of the Safe Child and Adolescent Network (SCAN) due to alarm concerning “a pattern of parental requests for increasingly invasive procedures based upon undocumented signs and symptoms reported by the parent,” read investigative reports.
A report warning of the risk to the child was “co-authored by four medical professionals of the child’s care team,” and was “reviewed and signed by the medical director for Seattle Children’s Hospital.”
“This situation is a case of medical child abuse … ” said the report. “It is not necessary to know the possible motivation of a caregiver, only the outcome of the behavior. It is my concern that this pattern has resulted in unnecessary medical testing, medication, procedures, surgeries and debility of this child.”
In February 2021, the report was sent to the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families. The Renton Police Department was contacted, and commenced their investigation.
Detectives also discovered diary entries written by Hartman, in which she allegedly described several instances in which she lied about having various diseases, such as meningitis and mono, in her youth, said court documents. Detectives noted that in one entry Hartman allegedly transcribed, “when it comes to suffering, I am a compulsive liar/exaggerator.”
Hartman penned an account of her work in Africa in a book that she said initiated her decision to adopt, reported The Independent. She received a flurry of interest once she publicly revealed the youngest daughter was diagnosed with AHC, and A GoFundMe page was established for a wheelchair.
The child’s various procedures date back to 2016, according to court documents. They also revealed that Hartman allegedly searched for “cochlear implants Black child,” “how to get paid to take care of a member of the family with a disability,” “making a pretend model of hearing aid,” and “funeral songs” on her iPad and iPhone.
In March, the child was taken from the care of her mother and monitored for 16 days at a local hospital, according to investigators.
“At no point during her admission were there any findings or reported symptoms to support any of her prior diagnoses. All the available evidence obtained during the course of her admission suggests (redacted) is a health young 6-year-old,” said court documents. Within the two week stay at the hospital, the child was able to eat and drink on her own, run and walk without the use of any aids and “demonstrated no need for a wheelchair”
Hartman was charged with second-degree assault of a child and second-degree attempted assault of a child. The state requested her bail be at $100,000 based on the defendant’s likelihood to commit a violent offense and interview with the administration of justice.
Hartman’s attorneys released a statement asserting that the charges “are based on false statements and misrepresentations of the medical record by a doctor at Seattle Children’s Hospital who has never seen the child or spoken with Ms. Hartman.”
In addition, they vouched for the legitimacy of the daughter’s illness, writing, “Contrary to the allegations of the King County Prosecuting Attorney, the child’s diagnosis was made by more than one doctor, is legitimate, and is based on a substantial record beyond the reports and information provided by Ms. Hartman.”
“That record includes independent medical examinations by multiple doctors, direct observation of the child by doctors and nurses at Duke and at Seattle Children’s Hospital, standardized testing results, videotapes of the child’s symptoms, MRI, EEG and other diagnostic tests. The King County Prosecuting Attorney has the medical records from Duke as well as records from Seattle Children’s Hospital amply supporting the diagnosis and the consistent reports of Ms. Hartman,” the statement read.
“Sophie Hartman is the mother of a young child with a rare neurological condition diagnosed and treated by doctors at Duke University Medical Center. … Ms. Hartman is innocent of these charges.”
Representatives of the Make-A-Wish Foundation released a statement soon after news broke of the investigation. “We are deeply saddened and dismayed to learn about the alleged child abuse case involving one of our former wish families,” read a statement provided to Q13 FOX. “This is a very serious allegation and any threat to the well-being of a child is not in alignment with the child-centered focus of our mission. We hope this matter is quickly remedied in the best interest of the child.”
