Tumblr Men Taxonomy

Ever since the rise of the Spamton fanbase i’ve been seeing a lot of debate on if spamton should be considered a Tumblr Sexyman or not and i think everyone saying he’s NOT is correct, but i’ve been talking with some friends and have realized a pattern in what i’d like to lovingly call a new “branch” of tumblr men/people because it’s an exceedingly common character archetype i feel us as a userbase need to acknowledge and treat separate from your oncelers and the like.

These guys? they’re all classic Tumblr Sexymen right? well, by consulting the primary sources  talking with my friends who were on the website and in the fandoms during the golden age of tumblr men, i’ve realized a massive part of sexyman culture people FORGET is that their appeal doesn’t just come from them being lanky bastard twinks. (we’ll get to sans later)

Their main appeal from a fandom perception is their actual or perceived HUMANITY. That sounds a little weird considering half these characters arent even human, but hear me out. Characters like the onceler and komaeda from dangan ronpa are just... dudes? Like they’re fucked up dudes, but they’re just GUYS. Sans too, even though not a human person, is still a very ORDINARY guy underneath the fandom-imposed angst. the appeal of these characters came from people seeing a spark of relatability and normalcy underneath all their Issues(tm) and fanwork, while portrayed as the “I can fix him” mentality came from a genuine place of exploration into what these people could BE

characters who AREN’T human, like bill cipher, wheatley, and dare I say the goddamn clock from DHMIS were QUITE LITERALLY humanized to explore a potential reality where they COULD be more of... PEOPLE despite their human nature. If they had become popular in THIS day and age, dare i say they fall into our SECOND category more (and as these interpretations of them are fanon i dare say they DO double class considering the disconnect between these common fan headcanons and fans which prefer the source material versions)

and then you get to characters like alastor or jack frost, who were once entirely human, then becoming inhuman entities, and that small bit of something left in there provides intrigue to explore them as people beyond their fun personality exteriors. 

Now, here’s where I’d like to propose the divide. Some of these characters gained less fan notoriety than others (especially because toby fox seems to be the main supplier of these guys) but they have often been labelled TSMs when I see a pretty distinct through line between them, with a little bit of wiggle room

The name i’ve been lovingly calling these guys is Disney Channel Eldritch Horrors. I am very open to new propositions however as the name implies that they are both from the Disney Channel and eldritch horrors which isn’t always correct. I haven’t found a similar name that conveys the same VIBES yet, so if anyone has any ideas for a better name i’d love to hear it. basically, the gist of this trope is that we have some weird little guys who are probably inhuman nightmares who’s appeal comes from sheer force of personality. this is where you get your weird little clown men and goofy loveable abominations. (i feel like some homestuck characters might fit this bill but i know absolutely nothing about any of them)

some of them MAY have some sort of tragedy involved in their backstory (spamton, flowey) but the main appeal of liking the character i’d argue comes more from the sheer strength of their characterization, rather than that stuff. Spamton is the closest to breeching this, but i feel for spamton fans i see way more posts about how people wanna throw him in a microwave than discussing the deep ramifications of his backtory (plus, he wasn’t ever a human person either.) Flowey on the other hand, the fandom has split asriel and him SO far as to be entirely separate characters despite the divide being less of a thing in canon, and people who are fans of just flowey tend to focus less on his backstory. 

now you’ll see i’ve also included discord in here, which is to demonstrate that i don’t think the body type for these guys has to exclusively be “some little shaped dude”, because discord tows that line, but his appeal still stays in that sheer force of personality, and he’s also very much NOT a human being. as mentioned earlier, the canon versions of wheatley and that stupid clock also probably fit this bill more. Bill Cipher is where i see this divide the strongest, between the canon character and fan reactions and he’s such a popular character that his fanbase CAN be split between these two camps i think. 

disney channel eldritch horrors i think, can be classified more on creator intent with their existence rather than fan reaction like a classic TSM. some of these characters gained more popularity than others but there’s a very specific crowd who forms to liking these characters over the TSM variety.

now, one last proposal in taxonomy, is that the twink body type vs lil shaped guy is an indicator of which category a character may fall into but it is not the primary factor and can be overridden by personality 

sans is a weird lil guy in classic toby fox fashion, but i think his status as a Tumblr Sexyman should not be questioned since his fandom was the closest thing to the replication OF the onceler fandom and his appeal was very steeped in his more darker aspects of the character. fizzarolli on the other hand, is very much a lanky beanpole dude, but he also is a stupid chaotic jester man who’s sheer VIBES overpower his body type and his popularity is for that personality. this is a rare phenomenon, but i realized it to be the case through some friends’ OCs, as calling some characters “tumblr sexymen” felt incorrect the deeper i thought about it

so uh... thank you for coming to my ted talk? i have a weird fascination with fan culture around these two specific camps of characters and i felt that i wasn’t able to express why i loved my weird jester men so much until now, as i felt my attachment to them felt a little conflated with a different TYPE of fan culture, and so i spewed my word vomit into something somewhat coherent.

what’s starkid? your posts have me intrigued…

oh, anon, thank you for giving me the opportunity to usher you through this door.

the short of it is that starkid is a musical theatre company best known for 1) their pop culture/genre parody musicals and 2) the professional recordings of said musicals that they've uploaded in full on their youtube channel. (these guys know how to treat their fans.) what really hooked me on them was how well they were able to balance the campiest, most out-of-pocket, balls-to-the-wall bullshit with genuine, emotional beats and characters you truly feel for. they will have you on your knees punching the sand over some motherfucker named slippery when wet. it's phenomenal. nobody understands an assignment like them.

if you're looking to get into starkid as a whole, i definitely recommend starting with twisted: the untold story of a royal vizier, which is, in the most reductive terms possible, "aladdin, but if jafar were elphaba from wicked, ft. disney villains all stars." it sets the bar for starkid stuff in my opinion; every beat, both comedic and emotional, hits, the conventions of the genre are either fantastically subverted or fantastically taken to their logical extremes, each and every actor ate and left no crumbs, and the music is just [chef's kiss].

the starkid posts i've been reblogging specifically are from nightmare time (nightmare time 2 in this case), which is an anthology of supernatural horror/comedy stories set in the small town of hatchetfield. the hatchetfield universe was first introduced in the stage musical the guy who didn't like musicals, then expanded in a second stage musical: black friday. the nightmare time short stories serve to further worldbuild the hatchetfield universe by fleshing out the residents, the town lore, and the supernatural forces in whose maw the town sits. if you're a fan of small town eldritch horror and building up a puzzle with pieces from branching timelines, definitely go check it out. i recommend starting with tgwdlm and black friday for context, and the nmt webisodes can then be found here.

Top Ten Gruesome Disney Villain Deaths

Here’s the thing about Disney animations: they’re proper nasty. No, seriously; they’re all about young people who suffer enormous hardship and bereavement. They’re full of betrayal and murder and scenes of abject horror. Nobody dies in Pinocchio, but a bunch of kids are mutated into donkeys and the main character’s dad is eaten by a whale. Lilo and Stitch? Dead parents. Lady and the Tramp? Killer rat. Dumbo? Racism. See? Darkness shrouds the House of Mouse.

One of the ways the films are surprisingly grisly is the manner in which the villains are dispatched. I’ve written before about great Disney villains and their penchants for great musical numbers, but another common connection is that the films end with them being bumped off. It’s not universal – sometimes they’re just deported (Frozen), arrested (Pocahontas), or, well, appear to suffer no punishment at all (Cinderella). And, of course, there is the depressing modern trend for Disney movies to not have a villain at all, something that doesn’t appear to be changing in Strange World (which, from the teaser at least, appears to be one of the “non-musical adventure” films, sadly denying us yet again a proper Disney Villain Song).  

Anyway, it’s not enough that the baddies frequently die, but they also have a tendency to die horribly. These are kids films that, alright, don’t feature fountains of gore, but still go to some nasty places. Immolation, dismemberment, damnation, and lots and lots of falling off tall things. Seriously, Disney villains don’t half fall off things. I could have had several more here. So that’s this list: a celebration of the macabre and the gruesome, the violent and the extreme. From body horror to, well, actual eldritch horror, Walt Disney Animation Studios really runs the gamut. And this is the company that gets called saccharine, sappy, and soft! Nobody’s soul is dragged to hell in My Neighbour Totoro. Although, to be fair, there is an extended sequence where you’re lead to believe a toddler may have drowned, so I guess that’s nasty enough.

Right, here we go. Parental guidance is advised. Ten best Disney deaths.

Ripped to pieces by a pack of hyenas (Scar, The Lion King, 1994): Scar is spared by Simba but, in his own hubris, ends up falling into a pit full of hyenas – the same hyenas he’d just thrown under a bus to save his own skin. The hyenas pounce on him, and as we see from a shadow cast by flickering flames, proceed to tear him apart and devour him. Think about this: he’s literally ripped apart and eaten alive. I know he killed James Earl Jones, but that’s still horrible.

Hit by train and explodes (Sykes, Oliver & Company, 1988): in an underrated and largely forgotten film, small-time mob boss Sykes ends up chasing our heroes (a bunch of dogs, mostly) down a subway track, his demonic and imposing car riding the rails like a train. But, wouldn’t you know, there’s a train coming the other way, and poor old Sykes drives right into it, his car exploding. There’s nothing to imply wider casualties, but this is a brutal end to a villain, like something out of a Bruce Willis movie.

Literally dragged to hell (Dr. Facilier, The Princess and the Frog, 2009): Dr. Facilier is dealing with dark magic, his “friends on the other side”, promising them souls and all sorts to satisfy their demonic urges. When his plan fails the bill comes due, as Mordo would say (from Doctor Strange, keep up!), and these freaky voodoo dolls and tribal masks come to life, dragging Facilier screaming into a grave, his fingers gouging channels in the ground as he tries to get away. He fails. That’s dark.

Hanged by vines (Clayton, Tarzan, 1999): Clayton is another villain undone by hubris, trying to kill Tarzan despite our hero warning him of the dangers of the jungle. He ends up falling from a great height (of course), hanging himself in some vines and presumably breaking his neck. Nasty enough, of course, but the animation really oversells it, the vines going taught as he falls, the shadow of Clayton’s body illuminated by flashes of lightning, his limp feet swaying in the breeze. Quite grisly, all told.

Falls off cliff then crushed to death by a boulder (The Wicked Queen, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937): after seemingly killing Snow White, the evil Queen – still in her haggard old woman disguise – is chased through a stormy forest and up a cliff by the dwarfs. Attempting to crush them with a huge boulder, providence intervenes when her outcropping is struck by lightning and she tumbles to her death, the boulder and huge chunks of the cliff-face falling after her. As if to solidify the whole thing, two nasty-looking vultures then wheel their way down to feast on what remains. So this was how Disney’s first film ended: seven blokes chasing an old woman to her death, after which she’s eaten by birds.

Falls into pool of molten lead (Frollo, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, 1996): Once again we have a confrontation up on top of something, once again we have a villain hubristically, vengefully lunging for one final kill instead of just escaping. And the gargoyle he’s resting on crumbles, its face contorting demonically, before filthy old Frollo plumets into a pool of molten lead, the damning implications of which are pretty heavily signposted throughout the film. Again, I will say: he literally falls into molten lead and is burned alive.

Stabbed through the chest by a boat (Ursula, The Little Mermaid, 1989): there’s not really anything poetic about this one, nor is there really any kind of hubristic overreach. Ursula seems victorious until sexy Prince Eric sails a shipwreck from the bottom of the ocean and plunges its broken prow straight into the Sea Witch’s chest. Really, it’s just how visceral and nasty it is, as Ursula flails her tentacles and slowly succumbs.

Ages rapidly, falls from a window, then crumbles to dust (Mother Gothel, Tangled, 2010): yet again – yet again! – we have a Disney villain falling to their death, although here I’d argue she was dead before she hit the ground. The magic that kept Gothel youthful dissipates, so she ages like that guy from Last Crusade, before – and I think this bit is often overlooked – cute li’l chameleon Pascal deliberately trips her up so she falls out the window to her death. Yes, she’s so far gone that by the time she reaches Earth she’s nought but dust, but all the same: murdered by a lizard.

Falls off Big Ben (Ratigan, The Great Mouse Detective, 1986): as we’ve discussed, the most common way for a Disney baddie to die is to fall off something tall – what we call the Reverse Tom Cruise – and I could have picked a few more here. But there’s something about this finale, a feral Ragitan chasing a dishevelled Basil round the clockwork innards and onto the face of Big Ben, that feels more visceral and, oddly, down-to-Earth. The fight is a brutal struggle, the climax of an action movie, before that final fall. Also just think how high this is for a mouse. He’d hit the ground like a water balloon full of passata.

Turned into a firework (Shan-Yu, Mulan, 1998): Shan-Yu is a nasty piece of work, one of the most violent and murderous Disney villains. Ultimately, however, he’s bested by Mulan in a thrilling rooftop battle, the climax of which is when he’s hit with a rocket that sends him flying through the air and into a tower of fireworks. All the fireworks go off in a tremendous explosion, no doubt scattering bits and pieces of Shan-Yu across a wide area as his charred and tattered remains are turned into a beautiful lightshow. Aw, this one was quite nice actually.

Going Back to Roots

With all the new shake-up on Twitter going on and most of us moving here or elsewhere, I've decided it was a good time to rebrand my streams/content as well as get back onto a schedule that does make me happy.

When I first started, I was primarily a horror streamer as those have been my favorite games for years. Eventually I moved away from those for reasons I honestly do not remember now, but I kinda decided that I'm not happy where my channel is going. I miss my State of Decay, Left 4 Dead, modded Rimworld, modded Minecraft, etc. and I think starting to slowly push content back that way will be things I enjoy going forward. I'll definitely do Genshin and Disney Dreamlight Valley on the occasion as well as collabs, but for the most part I'm going back to horror survival/horror games.

Also have a new horror eldritch model coming up so can't wait to see that!

6. What did you think of Zhan Tiri as the big bad?

watching season three was a bit of an exercise in managing expectations and constantly reminding myself that at the end of the day this is a children’s show on disney channel and they were never going to go as hard with the horrifying protean eldritch horror angle as i would have liked, but i’ve been super into zhan tiri as a concept since queen for a day and when i watched painter’s block for the first time i was delighted because it seemed like a pretty strong signal that zhan tiri wouldn’t be a one time deal; i love the lore and her eclectic aesthetic and her quirky followers and the gremlin baby look (shdhsfbdsh), i love the manipulative chessmaster angle.

also season three validated a lot of the way i wrote zhan tiri pre-season three; i had her pegged as a skillful manipulator and in once a handmaiden in particular… man, the bitter snow vibes were strong in handmaiden. and it’s a sort of small silly thing the way she introduces herself to rapunzel and cassandra by making them say her name gave me so much life because that’s how i did it in bitter snow too (and so did pathygen in strings which everybody should read) and i love winning

and when season three wasn’t validating my headcanons it was very politely leaving them untouched. i think the only zhan tiri headcanon of mine that season three broke was the specific nature of her manipulation of demanitus, wherein i imagined her betraying him first. 

my one disappointment is with… sort of everything after she actually gets her hands on the drops. my favorite thing about zhan tiri throughout the rest of season three was that, despite her evidently having powers once she was released in cassandra’s revenge,* she still relied on manipulation to get what she wanted. she earned every single one of her wins by out-thinking, out-planning and out-maneuvering her opponents and i love that it’s so unclear whether being in the lost realm for two thousand years weakened her or if she just prefers to achieve her ends through cunning and artifice. also a boomerang is such a thematically perfect weapon for her to use because it requires precision, skill, and forethought and it attacks in ways and from angles that most people don’t think to defend. 

(*she floats in cassandra’s revenge; teleports in race to the spire at least once and i think arguably twice [the spire appears to have only one entrance, and ziti either sneaks back in through it while rapunzel and eugene are right there, or she teleports in behind the staircase]; possibly teleports and possibly is invisible in tale of two sisters given how quickly she pops in and out and the fact that cass doesn’t see her even though she’s in cass’s line of sight when she slips the broken mirror into rapunzel’s bag; gives cass some kind of telepathic glimpse into her own mind in handmaiden and again, more implied teleporting and invisibility plus the grapes and potion which personally i think she just conjured; and in plus est en vous we see her shapeshift on a small scale when she goes full gremlin and hisses at rapunzel. plus there’s the recurring theme of her shadow appearing as the monster form.)

my absolute favorite zhan tiri moments are when, in race to the spire, she steals the key from rapunzel by throwing the boomerang directly underneath rapunzel’s hand, causing rapunzel to reflexively lift her hand into the returning flight path, allowing the boomerang to snatch the key on its way back; and the implication in plus est en vous that zhan tiri (1) knew cass didn’t trust her, (2) would react to this distrust by putting her in a rock cage, and (3) would forget to extend the rock cage through the floor on which it sat, and to counter this she picked up a vial of acid in the demanitus chamber hours before cass actually turned against her. both are small moments that suggest so much cleverness, foresight, ability to improvise, to use people’s strengths and weaknesses to her advantage, to always have a contingency plan. also it’s funny as hell

so when she got her hands on the drops, turned into a giant monster, and just clobbered everyone through raw brute strength… i mean, don’t get me wrong, that was cool and i loved every second of it but it was also, kind of, zhan tiri where did your brain go? and i know the point is that she gets what she wants and arrogantly assumes nobody can stand against her now, but the thing is… zhan tiri just spent a whole season running around in the tiny body of a six year old and relying on mundane methods and the occasional magical party trick to get what she wants so it does feel a little out of character to me that she would take this left turn into Raw Power Is The Only Thing That Matters when cleverness has always been her greatest asset.

then again if she had kept her brain she probably would have won so like +1 for the demonic idiot ball for saving the day lmao

7. Do you have any post-series headcanons?

almost all of my non-zhan tiri headcanons revolve around bitter snow / the saporian cass au/rewrite thing i’m writing so i haven’t even begun to consider post-series headcanon stuff but i will say that immediately after the group shot at the end of plus est stalyan dumps brock and hooks up with caine and they run off and become pirate queens together and also sing a lot it’s a crime they didn’t let laura benanti sing

1. What’s one genre you really love the idea of, but are disappointed when you go to read/watch it?

Fantasy. I’m just so tired of the misogyny, racism and homophobia. So fuckinh tired.

3. Which of your OCs is the kinkiest?

oh boi. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don’t know????????? My stories don’t have a lot of romance or smut in them?(Not against either in other’s stories I’m just not good at storylines involving romance?)

4. What is the one thing you most want a fan to say someday?

idk I’m pleased by the smallest things. Just an I love your stories is more than enough for me. But what I truly want is the insanely detailed meta that fandoms produce like wow never planned that but thats neat kind of meta you know?

5. Which OC do you think readers will like the most?

Kai i think? ik everyone will hate aux cause she is a confident female character. But I’ve seen people fall in love with kai so easily lmao.

6. Were your OCs born naturally, with pharmaceutical assistance, or via c section?

I’m not sure if you are asking in canon or if this is some kind of metaphor?

But in canon, kai was natural. 

Fun side note tho: I have a whole world (it’s in the ideas folder for now. I haven’t written anything for it I think.) in which the difference between c-sections and natural births are really important and kind of form the basics of world building and the magic an individual can have.

7. What is the single emotion that is the absolute hardest for you to write? (loneliness, loss, hopelessness, joy, etc)

uhhh hopelessness is the hardest cause it hits me hard. But actually writing it is easy cause I feel it so much?

8. If your OC were a cookie, what sort of cookie would they be?

Kai would be oatmeal chocolate chip cookie

9. How important do you think it is to describe a character’s appearance?

I tend to go  under than over with physical descriptions. But that changes with the POV. Kai files away important info especially strength and societal position and hidden weapons because of his past. But Sacrus on the other hand is attracted to the shiniest part of a person(as in the most attractive like a brilliant smile or pretty hair or twinkling eyes) because his artist brain is already figuring out how to put it on paper.

10. And, spitballing off that, which OC do you think is the prettiest?

ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm they are all pretty in their own ways but the thing is none of them are conventionally(read euro centric) beautiful.

One of your OCs is on an impromptu road trip and stops at a gas station in the middle of the night to pee and grab something to eat. They pick a drink, a salty snack, and a sweet snack. What are they?

kai would go for blood obviously, he wouldn’t really pick something salty unless he is in pain because salt is a vampire painkiller in my verse, he would totally go for cakes tho(sweet tooth idiot) preferably something blood flavored.

Your absolute most evil OC is startled by a toaster popping. What happens next?

the evilest of my ocs is an otherwordly eldritch horror that sucks life magic and color out of the world so uhh it would probably destroy the toaster?

Your sweetest OC goes up to the McDonald’s counter to get their order only to discover that after twenty minutes of waiting, the order is wrong, and this is the third time this has happened today. What happens next?

I don’t really have sweet ocs tbh but the closest is sel who would just accept his fate and drink the wrong drink. He would probably tip them too. But if it happens to someone he loves the barista would probs get a strong talking to and the drink returned(he would compensate with a bigger tip tho).

One of your OCs is in a Disney animated movie. What’s the “big” song of that movie? (Pocahontas’ was “colors of the wind,” Aladdin was “a whole new world,” Hercules was “zero to hero” etc.

None of them are straight enough to be in disney movies but kai would probs be let it go(sorry but it kind of fits him?)

Do you think having to write while stuck out in the wilderness by yourself (in a heated cabin, food and water but no wifi, tv, or phone service) would help or hurt?

help probably? unless i get terrified. For someone who loves isolation I sure am a wuss.

But not having wifi might hurt cause sometimes i get fixated on one little detail and it would help to just get it out of my system(like naming a character or some fact) by just looking it up.

You have written or thought about writing dirty fanfiction. What is it?

I used to be a fic writer lmao. I deleted everything so eh. I’m not gonna go into details tho.

Someone offers you thirty million dollars to ghostwrite a book about how Hell is real and all dogs go there, good or bad. Do you do it?

uhhhhhh yes? what kind of question is this? Do you know how many dogs I can have with 30 million dollars?????

romance or horror? romance is a really hard genre to write tbh. (for me). I have mad respect for romance writers. Horror is a no cause im a wuss.

# my perspective has even changed since i made that post #bc that was before the reigan sans poll #which kinda changed tsm culture a bit. Kinda Funny How An Event Meant To Analyze Or Celebrate A Culture Ended Up Being A Relevant Milestone To TSM Studies And To How The TSM Culture Itself Is Seen And Understood By The Masses. (why am i talking about this so seriously?)

yeah no genuinely i’m utterly fascinated by it? like..?? when i first saw it happening it was like haha oh this is funny and then even when the wild shit with the finals of the poll went down and all the memes were made i still was just enjoying the ride. but like??? in retrospect it kinda feels like that poll REDEFINED sexyman culture in a way?

like i think when spamton became everyone’s next obsession kinda STARTED the reframing in the public eyes but the poll really cemented it. i think ever since the poll, tumblr sexyman has become like… a lot more CELEBRATED? i remember back when TSMs were starting to be discussed by more widespread sources (the izzzyzzz video essay comes to mind, lots of video essays popularized the phrase in a less niche circle) they were very critiqued in the whole “fandom latches onto any character who is a twinky white man and if theyre not human they’re turned into one” and i think that definitely IS still a criticism of the culture but i think since the poll and an overall shift in tumblr culture as a whole they’ve very mucu been almost heralded as mascots for tumblr as a whole.

there’s so many factors here i can think of beyond the poll and spamton too honestly: stuff like blorbo becoming a loved and accepted term, tumblr as a whole flourishing as a website as every other social media crumbles around it, and the resurgence of some older fandom culture

i think it’s super interesting because the term almost feels less rigid now, like some of the arguments i made for TSMs versus disney channel eldritch horrors i don’t think apply anymore because i very specifically looked at the way fans interpret the perceived personalities and “humanity” of the characters, which is certainly a lens to look at them with, but i think it’s almost more loose and less defined now. the post i reblogged a lil bit ago about how the character has to be Weird and Unconventionally Attractive is definitely a good start but i think it even goes beyond attraction? i’m not sure if there’s that much of a typically defined common thread between these characters at all. i think a sexyman is whatever the general fandom culture makes of it

well, okay, at least finding your channel meant I found some cool animations. still, I barely understood any of them.

i. HAHDJIAHSJS god i am. i did not expect a post of me talking about tumblr men taxonomy to inspire anyone to look at my youtube channel but i’m glad you enjoyed the incomprehensible monstrosity that it is regardless. genuinely thank you! it means a loy

for uhhh…??? context because APPARENTLY i have some sort of observer audience now, i will leave that under the cut for anyone curious about fandom history of a stupidly insular community

i was/am a fan of a niche webseries/podcast thing called discord murder party (DMP), which has now ended after 4 years. most of what’s on my channel spawns from the incomprehensibility of a single discord server size fandom making memes and in jokes which cannibalized itself, and as you can probably see if you look at my upload list, most of them revolve around dreamland, which is the animatic to the song by the swingrowers, i made last year around 3/4 of the length into DMP.

now, dreamland became a huge meme within this extremely niche webseries community to the point where the joke (mainly being based around my personal hell of the animatic being something i tried to make one years prior then failed and it continually coming back to haunt me) kept finding new ways to invent itself and multiple people in the community covered it and made meme versions of it

this culminated in that hour long cinematic shitpost with the salt and pepper diner playlist but with various versions of this song and it has far too many layers of what’s essentially a large friend group’s 3 year history of memes. catatonic is the same: it’s a meme animatic i made for the anniversary of dreamland which i didnt intend to put as much effort as i DID but it just kept going

now for the last small piece of context to tie this nightmare together you may have noticed if you go into my animations playlist the single video that’s not on my channel with a very long title. that’s the animatic i worked on OFFICIALLY for this show. i got brought on as essentially an ascended fan for the last 6 months of the show’s run as an artist and this spawned a whole OTHER wave of in jokes and memes which are borderline incomprehensible without me walking through every step of the way. also it… kinda ended up getting me into art school so thats neat??

ALL THIS IS TO SAY is that i don’t actually super recommend watching dmp to get these jokes. almost all of them are fandom memes that ARE connected if you have it EXPLAINED WHY but DMP is a very very long show that has a ROUGH first 2 seasons and if you know nothing about it you will probably not have a good time because the quality and style shifts rapidly in the second half

HOWEVER COMMA this is where i go to plug and say the director of DMP will eventually be working on a new show called chaos van, and a little behind the curtains peak is that the two main characters of that show are what INSPIRED me to write the tumblr men taxonomy post, because if charlie was a man i argued she would be a TSM with the disney channel eldritch horror body type and Oz would be a DCHE with the tumblr sexyman body type.

the show is only in early production but it’s planned to be a lot more accessible and easy to jump in on (you dont need to have watched dmp even though it’s technically a continuation) and is a real fun pitch: it’s a multiversal road trip where a god of stories and a god of chaos are on the run as they meet absurdist set pieces and characters while learning to fight gods!

so. yeah. lmao
