What’s his name, Marvel?

(NB: For the record, any of my criticism on this post is directed to Marvel Studios and Disney, not to the actor Haaz Sleiman (pictured above) nor Eternals co-star Brian Tyree Henry, whom I wish nothing but the best for.)

Now, I have some marketing moans about Eternals from Marvel studios.

It is August, 2021.

There's been a buzz about the MCU's "first openly gay character" recently (how dare y'all disrespect Gay Joe Russo like that), and that the character, Phastos (played by Brian Tyree Henry), will be shown in the movie to be married to another man (played by Haaz Sleiman).

The MCU's first gay couple, as Marvel studios themselves keep touting.

Anyway, I wondered to myself: what's the husband's name?

So I set to Google.

I Googled the cast list for Eternals, and this a screenshot from today of the lower end of the results:

Ah, no name.

The text under the actor's name simply says "Phastos' husband".

Okay, so I went next to IMDB, to search the 'full cast and crew' section, of which there is only 19 listed as of today (and I'd expect that list to grow after the movie releases).

These are the bottom four results on the IMDB listing, and Sleiman's "Husband" doesn't even have the word husband listed.

Below him is a named character, Karun, and two 'uncredited' characters such as 'Girl' and 'Passerby'.

Um... Right.

Now, I'm not trying to be difficult. I just want to know what this guy's name is. I also want to know: why isn't his name listed? Why isn't it easy to find?

I've browsed Google for articles on this nameless husband for the past half an hour, and the only sparse information I can find is seemingly one interview/quote that the actor (Haaz Sleiman) has given, stating that his character and Phastos share an onscreen kiss.

That's great, but what's his name?

I'm getting the impression that Husband (we'll have to just call him that for now) isn't going to have a prominent role in this movie, considering he's nameless and so far down on cast listings.

Just one up from 'uncredited', basically.

News outlets refer to his character as "Phastos' husband" only. Withholding a character's name makes no sense, unless that name/character themselves is a spoiler.

Yet... I'm not really getting that vibe from Husband, I'm getting more of a walk-on role vibe from him/this character. And if that's the case, his name won't be a spoiler, so why isn't is more widely available?

Leaving him nameless while also watching Disney/MCU pat themselves on the back for this gay rep onscreen feels disrespectful to his character.

Is he a well rounded character, or a nameless walk-on with one line?

All we know is from Sleiman's direct quote: "I'm his husband, I'm an architect, we have a child."

That's great, but did Disney give you a name?

Sigh.

I'm really trying to reserve my judgement until the movie is out (we may have to wait until 2022 if it gets delayed), and I'd love to be pleasantly surprised...

But then I remind myself this is DISNEY and Disney's track record with LGBT+ rep has often been hyped up only to fall flat and ring hollow when actually seen onscreen.

See the afore mentioned Gay Joe Russo in Avengers Endgame (2019), and LeFou's "exclusively gay moment" which was more like a vaguely gay nanosecond in Beauty and the Beast (2017). Hardly great rep.

And another barely there moment (two seconds, was it?) in Rise of Skywalker (2019) when two women share a kiss (Commander Larma D'Acy kisses her pilot wife Wrobie Tyce) in celebration at the end.

I rather fear we're going to get another two seconds, blink and you'll miss it, kiss between the two married men in Eternals.

Disney is putting so much emphasis on any visibly gay couple being MARRIED in order to kiss (while Hetero characters kiss and more without being married), attempting to package their gay characters as homely, 'respectable', and more palatable to a Het audience, but if one of these characters doesn't even have a name then how is it any better or more meaningful than the nanosecond that 2017's Beauty and the Beast served up?

How is a character going to matter when he doesn't even have a name? You're trying to tell me he'll be important to the story, to audiences? Doesn't seem like it from here.

Now, I'd love to be pleasantly surprised.

I'd love to see this character in Eternals get a name other than "Phastos' Husband" (I'll be keeping an eye on listings for a name, too.) I'd love to see him have lines, I'd love to see him onscreen generally.

I want to see him matter.

As always, Disney wants us to 'wait and see', a line they often feed us when it comes to MCU characters.

Disney knows queer fans are here, they prove that enough by leaning into queerbaiting with their marketing (Bucky Barnes, and more recently Loki have suffered from this) but Disney rarely delivers anything satisfactory.

Writer Russell T. Davies, of fan favorite show Torchwood, recently said that Disney's attempts to show Loki as bi were "a feeble gesture". (He's right and he should say it.)

I'm not exactly holding my breath with Disney here, but I'll wait until I see Phastos and Husband for myself before I decide if it's any good or not.

Or if this poor dude ever gets a name.

In the meantime, all I want to see is Disney treating this supposedly ground breaking new character with the same respect as the other cast: list his name.

List his name with the rest of the main cast.

It shouldn't be this difficult to find out a character's name in a major movie, and especially not if the studio is making a big deal about the character being there, giving themselves points for rep.

If that name is out there somewhere (I gave up looking, it shouldn't take longer than thirty minutes to locate a name for God's sake), then it needs to be made more prominent so fans can find it.

Google and IMDB would be ideal places to have the character name listed.

If IMDB can list 'Girl' and 'Passerby' onto the uncredited roles, then we should also have a simple NAME for this Husband so we can start using it.

What's his name, Marvel?

So here's the thing

I, uh, may have an ulterior motive for making my comeback here.

Like not that I didn't miss y'all to some degree or anything (well I missed the people. Not so much the drama) but in my absence I actually found something out about myself and that is that I am deeply, hopelessly, irrevocably a fan of the genre of whump.

It's something I've danced around here and there for years now, even in my own art, very rarely in my own writing (I was usually too embarrassed for anyone to find out), but I never had a word to describe it so I ended up using terms like "nonsexual bondage" and whatnot. I basically never found anything I was interested in online in the process, because I didn't know the right word for it. It left me feeling like I was the only person in the world who was into this kind of stuff in a nonsexual way. Now that I've discovered what it is and how sharply it caters to my secret hidden lifelong desires (seriously, this shit goes back to my childhood, fuckin hell), I feel the need to immerse myself in its community, and the most comprehensive whump community I can find is on Tumblr. I honestly never even expected to come back to this blog, but well, here I am. I honestly expected it to cause me more anxiety than this, but in a way it's like returning... not home really, but maybe to an aunt's house that you haven't visited in a long time, and the familiar smell is kind of comforting even if they did change the carpets and they have a dog they never had before.

The thing that's kind of holding me back currently is that, well, I have almost 800 followers still on this blog, and I have no ides how many of you would even tolerate me posting about/reblogging whump related things, let alone be actively interested. (I'm eyeing a few of you curiously, but I'm pretty sure most of y'all came here originally for the Sonic stuff...) I guess my purpose here is to find out how many of you would be cool with my blog shifting in that direction. I wouldn't begrudge anyone unfollowing over it (hell I cleared out my old follow list when I signed back in, got rid of almost half my old follows, sorry to any mutuals that broke with), but like, for those of you who aren't interested but would like to still stick around (I wouldn't be posting ONLY whump stuff, it'd just be a focus) I'd be happy to tag appropriately so you can skip it. And for any of you who are actually into whump, please do talk to me about it! Send me a message! Seriously, I've been so alone in this for so long that finding others to talk to about it is more of a high than goddamn cocaine. (At least I'd imagine so. I've never, like... tried it.)

i'll try to split this ask into parts -

1. WRITEBLRS TO FOLLOW

i mean, everyone is v talented in their own way, and beyond "unpredictable and unhinged" i'm hardly certain what you're looking for, but if you're asking for people that i personally vibe with -

@at-lxs - rarely posts her own writing, but remains one of my most treasured mutuals - the day i get her to put content on her blog, it's over for y'all. she's so fucking funny and sharp, and either way, her tags are also always worth a visit bc her eye for detail & analysis on writing will leave you shaking

@holotones - woohoo fucked up, deliciously good writing time!! if you like unhealthy relationships, body horror, and cowboys, i legit can't recommend haeji's blog enough. they write in basically every genre known to man, which is also a huge plus - if for some reason you don't love everything they post, you are guaranteed to find at least one thing you do

@llesbianwrites - HER WRITING KNOCKS ME OFF MY FEET EVERY TIME I SEE IT AND THAT'S THAT ON THAT. i still get breathless thinking about hungry ghosts, and i want peter's intro inscribed on my gravestone. read it or/and perish

@carumens - one of the first writeblrs i followed when i joined - she's so open and welcoming, it almost helps distract from how much my heart aches whenever i think of sunflowers at night :')

@aelenko - abby's blog features one of the only non-fantasy wips on this list, since it's not smth i typically care for - which should alone be testament to how crazy talented abby is to make me care about hers. she's also got new fantasy & dark academia wips that make my heart go TWICE as wild because,,, ohhhh my godddddd

@emdrabbles - worldbuilding. worldbuilding everywhere. also six of crows content, which frankly i don't think the world can ever have enough of. also also guaranteed to be the coolest person you'll ever meet, but also a certified bully of taller people (everyone) so look out for that 😔

@viviuyn - her writing has so much going on, how can you NOT be captivated? i don't even like vampires technically & i still can't stop thinking about that excerpt she posted about the man who loves his vampire gf a little too much :'>

@acrimoneous - two words: CODENAME HAMLET. bonus words: wip of the century. also leaves literally the nicest comments, i get a little emotional whenever i see them

@zuiderhaaks - i didn't think it was possible to go feral go stupid over every single thing a person posts, but eva somehow proves me wrong each time. if you like themes of divinity, with a nice heaping of Oh God Oh Fuck Am I Crying Right Now, can't recommend high enough tbh

2. TAG LISTS

a tag list is a list of people who've asked to be tagged whenever you upload content related to your wip! so like, let's say you have my wip, requiem. someone asking me to join the tag list means that, when i post writing on requiem, i'll tag them in it - whether in the form of a self rb (my preferred method), under a 'read more', in the comments, etc. it helps to keep track of the people who have asked on a notes doc, i've found, or else it just gets messy - esp if you have multiple wips, but not people interested in following each and every one

3. HOW DOES WRITEBLR WORK

kind of like how you'd think, i reckon! you post your writing in whatever form you please and roll from there.

some general tips i can give you on it though include -

make an intro post detailing who you are, what genres you like, what you're hoping to post/follow, your interests, etc. this'll help you find other people in the community

use tags like "writeblr", "writers on tumblr", "original writing" and "wip introduction" (for when you first post your projects)

don't stress over number of notes, they'll come come to you. but also lower your expectations like a Lot in regard to them if that's smth you care about. 20 notes is considered 👌👌

and legit don't stress or put yourself down. we are all just sitting here man

In the wolf au, is Kirishima dating Denki, hanta, Mina, ect or is just kinda a wolf thing? Not that I mind either way I'm just super curious lol. Also it's so lovely, your work is so sweet.

Ohohohohohohoho I’m glad you both asked about Kirishima’s pack cause boy do I have answers - okay first things first, Kirishima is only dating Bakugou and he’s the only wolf shifter in the pack (well, Mina is also a shifter, just not a wolf shifter)

In the AU pack dynamics are loosely based on how wolf packs work in the wild: in nature usually there’s an alpha couple (the “alpha male” and his mate) and the rest of the pack is made out of their pups! So by all means it’s just a family unit - once the pups are old enough to fend for themselves they leave the “pack” to form their own family - they’re social animals, so they need a pack to be happy and safe, and that reflects in the AU too. In this universe though it’s pretty normal for wolf shifters to date/marry non-shifters or shifters of other kinds, and when that happens the resulting kids might or might not have shifting abilities, which results in the process of forming a pack being a bit all over the place

In Kirishima’s case, he was born by two non-shifters who had shifter blood in them - as a wolf shifter his wolf side needed a pack to feel well (let’s say, other wolves to play with and learn from and so on) so as a kid he used to spend a lot of time with Fat and Amajiki (both wolf shifters!) who acted as a surrogate pack for the wolf in him - now he’s old enough to have his own pack tho! And while ideally that would mean he builds his own family with another wolf shifter, he ended up falling for Bakugou, who’s a non-shifter and a man, which means the family plan sorta went down the drain. His wolf still needs a pack to be happy tho, and that ended up meaning he latched onto Mina (a childhood friend) and Kaminari and Sero (Bakugou’s close friends) who by this point are as close to him as if they were actual family.

So in theory Kirishima’s wolf side sees the pack as himself and Bakugou as the alpha couple and Mina, Sero and Kaminari as the “pups” - practically though Kirishima’s human side has a perfect grasp on his wolf’s instincts, so all in all it ends up just being five pals loving each other like family, no power imbalance at all (…he does get clingy after his pack members spend time with people outside of the pack, but he doesn’t ever try to stop them from socializing outside of the group and cuddles and general close proximity are all he needs to make his wolf feel better!)

…as you can see, I spent more time on this AU than strictly necessary haha

Think happy thoughts, like… actually, I’ve been thinking about this since the fight against Rappa, but does Kirishima’s unbreakable form still have a cooldown period? In the UA file there was noted how after he breaks it he needs a while to get in back up, but against Rappa he just kept on pulling it back up every time it got broken? So?? Was that just the moment’s adrenaline making him able to keep going, or did he actually get rid of the cooldown? If he did he doesn’t have a drawback anymore!!! You go my small rock son!!!!

He’s perfectly stable with Kaminari, Sero, Shouji and Tsuyu! (Kaminari and Sero cause they’re friends, Shouji and Tsuyu cause the resulting fusions are the only two Mineta fusions with no sexual tendencies at all. They just. Suppress that side of Mineta completely) He’s more or less stable with another few in the class, but the only perfectly stable ones are those four!

Uhmmm lemme see if I know how to word this properly… it is true that I ship every possible couple out of the four of them, and it’s also true that I ship the ot3 separately too (though I always prefer it if Kiri and Baku are together for ~otp reasons~ haha) and I guess I don’t mind the ot4 either? They give me a warm feeling and I love to think about them happy and together all flopped over each other and being affectionate and loving, but all of this can happen with them being in a really close frienship too, right? And I generally prefer them in that sort of relationship

The reason why is mostly that… how do I put this, every couple and trio have their own very singular dynamics, right? Bakugou and Kirishima’s relationship is gonna be different from Bakugou and Sero’s or Sero’s and Kirishima’s or Kaminari and Kirishima’s, they all have different moods and different feelings and so on, which means that they will have different ways in which they’ll develop too, I don’t know if you’re following me. I’m not saying that it’s impossible for all four of them to develop romantic feelings towards all the other three at the same time starting from such different relationships, it’s completely possible and that’s why I don’t mind the ot4 at all, but when I have such a huge playground to enjoy so many different friendships and relationships and dynamics, boiling them all down to the same “they’re romantically into each other” cuts a lot of the fun, for me!

So tl;dr what I mean is that I don’t mind the ot4 and I might draw for it in the future, but it’s more entertaining for me to pick a couple/ot3 and see how the other dynamics shift because of it then just put them all in the same relationship!

Also, I’m a fan of the idea of the four of them ending up being overly affectionate and tactile with each other anyway, so in the end romance or not what’s missing is just the kisses, isn’t it? I don’t draw n sfw anyway haha

Did your caption get deleted from my blog?

When I have a computer I will give this post it's own section on my tumblr.

I haven't been on tumblr for a year or two and when I came back on I have joined a different community and lost my old blog. This new community seems to have this extremely weird fixation with having the caption underneath a photo to remain through all reblogs. This was not a thing the last I was on tumblr.

I would like to state first and foremost that only two people have contacted me being upset about this. EACH of those two people made NO effort to ask the caption be returned, made NO effort to ask why, and made NO allowance for me to respond back before blocking me. THIS IS NO WAY TO GET WHAT YOU WANT!?

Not only did I learn this action from tumblr, but in my opinion, I hold legitimate reason for doing so. That of which I may explain later, if I decide these psychos deserve an explanation.

Seriously, what the actual fuck? Why the actual fuck is this a fucking issue? Like what? People have blacklists for this shit are you SERIOUS lmfao? Whaaaaat!? I honestly think its kind of funny but I'm also really fucking annoyed lmfao.

I didn't even know this was apparently wrong lmfao? Everyone wants to attack you rather than ask or explain lmfao. Psychopaths!

*I also believe in anarchy, so any form of trying to penalize me for this rather than just ASKING me to do what you needed is going to make me intentionally not do it that much more, so please keep in mind that its your own rudeness preventing things like this from being resolved. Ask nicely and I just may*

Moving forward, though. So there is this LOVELY thing on tumblr called a "source." The source option on a photo allows you to link your tumblr blog to the photo in a way where your URL becomes a clickable link underneath the photo, as well as the photo itself also becomes a clickable link back to your own tumblr. This feature was designed so that in the event a caption is removed, your credit of the photo will always remain. There is also a second option, more reliable, as a source can be changed. That would be to watermark your photo. Watermarking your photo means editing it so that the URL of your profile is listed on the photo itself, in the event that the photo is reposted, source is changed, etc. These two options alone should be enough in most cases to have your photo credited. That being said, this is still the internet, you post your personal photos you will always risk them being stolen, unfortunately.

Contrary to that, I DO understand that in some cases a photo may need multiple forms of credit, or a caption necessary to further explain a photo, etc etc. There are times where a caption may feel kind of necessary.

That being said, I DONT feel it necessary to leave captions such as "i love this wig," "got weed?," "Come smoke with me," "this is cute," etc. etc. etc. At no point is any of that necessary to credit your photo, in which case it isnt necessary for me to reblog that with it.

Which brings me back to, why the actual fuck is that so damn important to some people? Like man, talk about letting little things bother you.... I am beside myself that people get that worked up about it. Sorrynotsorry I didn't care what you personally thought of the damn picture? I do leave credit for photos necessary as well as couldn't give a shit less if someone deleted one of my captions. Lol. I don't even watermark my photos. I honestly don't care. Someone deleting the caption on my photo would be the most meaningless thing that could ever happen to me.

Another thing I am confused about: I have only ever experienced this in the tumblr-stoner community? The one fucking group of people thats supposed to be chill as fuck? Like what? Y'all angry as hell lol take a fuckin dab or meditate or something cuz y'all need to chill the fuck out. I'll tell ya the real-life-stoner community is a wholllllle lot more laid back than the tumblr-stoner community. I really dont get it. Yall just chill. Its not that big of a deal I swear.

Mind you, I am a professional photographer with almost a decade of experience. I DO understand crediting photos. Truly, in so many ways, I do. However, I don't get why its so important that everyone knows you thought that tree looks cool. Especially with how many other reblogs have the caption. And one not bothers the hell out of y'all? I literally have 40 followers and I've used this account for like two months lmfao relax. You arent missing anything. I get stoked when someone reblogs a post from me. Like me deleting it has no affect aint nobody even finna see it lmao. Because my ONLY assumption is that you are super desperate for followers and likes [popularity] so that you must be super extra sure that everyone knows you posted that photo? Literally my only guess. Why else could it bother someone SO much?

Okay I GUESS. so why do I delete captions? Literally because I run a themed quality blog and it deminishes the quality of your overall blog to have text posts. I really dont wanna give away everything I do to make my blog look pretty but that and strictly high resolution photos. Its like my two biggest things in running my blog. I cant even begin to say how much sometimes I REALLY wanted to reblog a photo and didnt because it just wasn't sharp enough. It is what it is for me. Sometimes I cant even do what Id like just to uphold it. If you find that untrue look at my blog. To the very beginning. No text posts anywhere (well, rarely), but every source remains. I have EVEN gone out of my way to find original posters when I see someone has stolen their photo, so I can reblog from the original post. I cant tell y'all how many blogs I follow that repost y'alls photos. And yet I get attacked for deleting "look how pretty the shatter is" when theres a blog who didnt just delete your caption, but took away your source AND put their own caption. Lol. To be honest its such olllllllddd news to delete text posts and its sad I even have to explain this to the new generation of babyboomers on tumblr.

Stop ruining tumblr and being hateful.

This whole website is supposed to be a loving home for the land of misfit toys. Not have blacklists where you spam people with hate and blocks over the most petty bullshit? Especially when you never asked to resolve the issue in the first place and only attacked the person. That makes YOU the asshole, not me.

ANYWAY, so how can we resolve this? Well, if you, for some reason, need a caption returned that you feel had credit to it, message me without blocking me immediately after, so I can know which photo. It literally would take me a few seconds to remove the old photo and reblog it again. All you had to do was ask!

Today, we hope to continue motivating y'all to get involved in the 2011 DiabetesMine Design Challenge!

One of the new faces on our Judging Panel this year comes from our sponsor, the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF). Dr. Sophia Chang is Director of CHCF's Better Chronic Disease Care program. She's an internist who's done a lot of work with AIDS patients and also medical research examining health disparities in breast cancer care.

Sophia's also a really down-to-Earth lady who clearly cares a lot about the well-being of patients and sees technology as a powerful means to that end:

DM) What are some of the ways that you see technology already helping to achieve "Better Chronic Disease Care"?

SC) It's playing out in a variety of ways. From the health care provider side, greater numbers are adopting electronic health record systems, and in turn, opening up "portals" or views of those records to patients. We see this as an important step towards better communication between patients and providers and hopefully improved support systems for patients to manage their chronic conditions.

On the patient side, the plethora of automated systems to provide feedback to support better self-care (e.g., mobile technologies) is both exciting and at times overwhelming. The key is to develop technology that is easy to use, and can be a part of the workflow for providers and "lifeflow" for patients — and even more ideally, that supports better and more meaningful communication to optimize treatment and management plans. In other words, we need to use technology to make the job of managing chronic conditions simpler and more effective.

All sorts of handy new tools are being developed for people to manage their chronic illnesses better in their daily lives. Can you share some good examples you've seen, even outside of diabetes?

Some of the most effective tools simply monitor the daily status of a person, such as a scale to monitor the weight of a person with congestive heart failure. Noting that the patient may be retaining fluid (maybe they ate a lot of salt the previous day) and a simple mediation dose change can potentially prevent them from having difficulty breathing and requiring hospitalization.

These monitors can be very simple, just a scale that attaches or transmits its information via a phone line. The more difficult part is how that information is fed, either back to the patient with a clear plan for what to do, or to a provider to work with the patient on an action plan. This is the more complicated part.

Some systems use automated telephone monitoring. I've seen this in Spanish for diabetes care, for example, to help affirm medication dosing and other lifestyle changes. And insulin pumps, while still somewhat cumbersome to use, have been a huge breakthrough. I trained in medicine when we still only had two types of pig insulin and our ability to manage glucose levels was still pretty rudimentary.

You stated in our contest video that patients manage their illness 99% on their own. So true! How do you see social media and the ability to connect with a community online making an impact?

It's actually 99.99% of the time. We know and understand that making behavioral and life changes are best done in the context of a support system, whether it be family, community or social network. Especially for those who cannot easily access their peers in their community (and even for those who can), social media provides a very powerful tool to identify peers and share concrete tactics on how to manage their conditions (the kinds of things health care providers rarely have the time, or even experience, to help patients with).
