there’s a bit on this page that seems to be missing from at least the official english translation, probably due what i call ‘the fullmetal alchemist problem’, which is when your manga characters’ cool names and nicknames sound silly and repetitive when translated into english because you’ve just called them the same thing twice in two different languages and now people are going to notice. but i thought it was interesting so now i’m telling you about it.
anyways, on this page in japanese dragon is identified by his full title- 革命軍総司令官/kakumeigun soushi-reikan, ‘revolutionary army commander in chief’; by his actual given name, ドラゴン/doragon; and by an epithet in between the two.
i’m pretty sure this is new- normally we just see dragon get called 革命家/kakumeika, ‘revolutionary.’ here, however, he’s called 反逆竜/hangyaku-ryuu. hangyaku means like treachery/rebellion/mutiny, while ryuu means dragon. so it's like 'the rebellious/treacherous dragon (animal), dragon (name).' it kind of reminds me of the joke in alabasta that's lost in translation where luffy starts calling crocodile ワニ/wani/'crocodile (animal)' when he gets fed up with him instead of his actual name, クロコダイル/kurokodairu.

I find it absolutely hilarious that the crocomom theory is basically canon on this app.

(guy who is very compelled by the Monkey D. family voice) your son gives you his son to raise and you scorn him for choosing his cause over his family and also because he is working to destroy everything you believe in but then one day you are going to sit on an execution stand next to your first grandson and you are going to understand that your son gave up his son so he will never be put in the position you are in because the very cause you believe in is going to kill your grandson and you are going to have to choose between him and your beliefs and both you and him know what you are going to choose because that is who you fundamentally are and when he is dead the only other person who still loves you will never forgive you and you are going to end up alone. wyd in this situation.

I have no words to express how much I hate Saturn right now.
This man believes Navy people are just tools, and I can't believe the Navy still serves under such a horrible person.
It felt good to see Bonny stabbing Saturn even though we all knew Saturn would make it through.
She has at least wounded him. She was allowed to make him bleed. Bonney won't be the one to destroy him sadly but I hope she will have a huge part in it.
Saturn called Kuma a slave, he claimed it was his natural state. No, Saturn, Kuma was born free and beloved. And he's not a toy you can destroy at will.
Kuma was born as a kind man. He still managed to keep his nice attitude even though Celestial Dragons kept torturing him. That's because he knew the world was cruel.
Kuma knew how much people suffered. He was a slave as a young child. That's such a gruesome fate!
Now I understand why he accepted Vegapunk's experiments on him. Because he didn't want anyone else to suffer from slavery. He knew what was going to happen, he knew the consequences.
So Kuma accepted this because he knew Vegapunk would create an army thanks to his agreement. Vegapunk would create an army able to destroy the Celestial Dragons and their deeds on the world.
Sabo also knew this. Dragon knew this. Ivankov knew this. Losing Kuma is something they can't afford morally.

I spy a baby Luffy with my little eye, and I need to know on a scale of 1-10, how well everyone takes care of him. (Also finally! An ask blog where Luffy is a baby 🥰)
||Alrighty I’m gonna have to answer this one in multiple parts so my apologies in advance 🙏||
P:1
🐊: I’ll start this out with the ones who are the best with him
Tumblr media
🐊: Koala is a 9, most often times when I need some help with Luffy she’s very helpful, she enjoys reading to him so I let her have full access to his nursery.
I keep an eye on them but overall I can trust her for short periods of time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
🐊: Dragon is a 7, he has the worst habit imaginable when it comes to when he wants Luffy’s attention, He is also miraculously nowhere to be seen when luffy needs changed. He constantly thinks our son hates him.
🐉: That doesn’t seem very fair

Going back to my last post, let’s explore Garp as a character for a bit - since this chapter goes into his connections as it play with his career in the Marines.
Yes. Garp is a legend. He’s the “Hero of the Marines”. He saved the world from Rocks D. Xebec. But what’s interesting is that he got these accolades in the Marines, in spite of not following the rules and doing his own thing. A lot has been said about how much Garp is similar to Luffy. But what is ironic is that despite the perception of him as this grand, heroic figure, he is a complete failure when it comes to raising and mentoring the next generation. And it all comes down to how he approaches life: Garp views every problem can be resolved by just punching it.
Pirates running amok, breaking the law? Punch ‘em, and book ‘em.
Some rookie asking you to train him? Either punch him so he’ll go away, or let him join you in punching battleships.
Your son became a revolutionary? Either punch him when you see him, or take it out on the Marine battleships.
Your grandchildren wanna be pirates? Punch them out of those silly ideas, or take it out on the battleships.
Even Luffy of all people, pointed out that Garp didn’t so much as raise him, Ace, and Sabo, as so much as drop in, punch them, and leave to continue being a Marine. All they learned is to be scared of Garp, rather than understand why he wants them to be Marines - especially if their parents are like Roger or Dragon. He never addressed Ace’s insecurities about his heritage, or whether he really could be anything more than a fiend or a public menace. He just said that being a Marine will make it better, though given that guys like Sakazuki are around, clearly it won’t be better - it’ll just bring new problems.
Garp is also a massive hypocrite since he’s all about his personal freedom to do what we wants and pursue justice his own way. But Dragon, Kuzan, Ace, Luffy and Sabo did the exact same thing as he does, and it led to different outcomes - Garp is outraged at the results and wants them to just do as he told, but is any wonder that they turned out how they did? They just followed his example. The Marines are part of an utterly corrupt and authoritarian institution - which views bloodlines as a determinant as to whether one should be treated as a devil or a god. It wages massive campaigns of slaughter based on whatever is suspected to have the potential undermine their rule. Dragon, Kuzan, Ace, Sabo and Luffy all saw the same things. Garp was confronted with this very contradiction when he had to save the Celestial Dragons from Xebec - but he chooses not to address it. He didn’t give any of his family members or pupils the tools to deal with that at all - because if he did, they’d all be Marines right now! But how does Garp deal with it? Maybe there’s no justifiable answer and he knows it. He can’t bullshit them, or maybe he did, but they never bought it. I’m sure fans are very curious as to why Garp is still involved in the Marines, but more so - what he sees in it? How much has it really changed from when he enlisted? (Maybe not much) Has he treated Coby and Helmeppo any differently from his previous “failures”? Or is there ideological breaks there as well? I mean, Coby’s in SWORD - but we don’t know if Garp is.
It’s all very interesting. I think that this is what Oda was trying to convey with Garp and Kuzan. More than just “Kuzan has lost his way, can he be redeemed” stuff. Just look back to his talk with Smoker, Kuzan hasn’t actually changed at all. The following chapters will make that clear. But I think we should pay attention to Garp. Beneath the knuckle sandwiches he delivers, and goofy old-guy demeanour, there’s complexity there. We’ll have to see.

Man, fuck Garp extra hard because stuff like what happened to Ginny is the kind of shit he chooses to remain ignorant about.
This flashback certainly has not done him any favors. Man was vacationing while knowing full well what was happening in Gods Valley.
He either needs a redemption arc or be killed off.
If Dragon and Garp aren't on speaking terms because of Garp's 'good cop' mentality then I would get it.

one thing that gets obscured in translation is that the name of the revolutionary army, 革命軍/kakumeigun, is structured the same as the name of the marines, 海軍/kaigun, literally 'ocean army.' given that dragon discusses how he originally joined the marines intending to help people but found no real justice there, i wonder if the similarity is intentional on his part.

i’m gonna write down all of the people who are rooting for luffy and/or if he asked would probably help him out with little to no hesitation bc it’s actually insane.
First, Shanks. An Emperor of the sea. His entire crew. They’re all rooting for Luffy to become King of the Pirates.
Next, Koby. A future admiral of the marines! (he will be one.)
Multiple high ranking members of the revolutionary army. The top two ranking members being his father and brother.
Like 4 (ex) warlords?? Boa and Jimbei are obvious. Mihawk is 100% rooting for Zoro so he counts. Crocodile is literally his mom so…
Kuma is literally both of those combined and he knew from the beginning that Luffy was gonna be great.
Multiple Whitebeard commanders (and we all know Whitebeard himself believed it)
Multiple islands??? Whole islands are rooting for Luffy.
Giants⁉️😭
The right hand man of the PIRATE KING.
more probably

So……
Finally we are actually getting some info and not skipping to someone else!
Tumblr media
I gotta say… I did not see that coming but I’m loving it!!! Some good old war tactics and not just charging in head first (coughLuffycough). Love it. It shows exactly how long this has been building up for! So far we have only speculated how good of a strategist Dragon was based on few little cues but to actually see the extent… I’m glad I was right! No offense to Luffy: it’s fun to see him punch people, but this is more my piece of cake. Also… KARMA IS COMING BACK BITCHES!!!
Tumblr media
Anything that can make Dragon make that face is a big no-no in my books… This is going to be fun: I can’t wait to see them all fight seriously!!! Also… is that Shanks? Or his evil twin maybe?
Tumblr media
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!! Finally! Someone said it! People really need to take Dragon’s words here and tattoo them on their foreheads. We need more of him in the real world… I’m real glad we are getting some answers to the key questions we (o at least I) had on the revolution. Again, we always speculated and there were debates around but to have it put black on white is great!
Tumblr media
This opens a whole fucking gate on how different the revolution is from what Luffy is doing, for example. They are an army: they fight a war that is bigger than all of them and it needs sacrifices, it’s not all happy-go-lucky. Yes, they know there are bad and good kings. Yes, they are saddened if something happens to the good ones. BUT! They know the general public doesn’t and won’t understand that. They know that things are too complicated to be just black and white but that sometimes that’s all people can see. And they are not above getting their hands dirty if it’s what is needed. They all have a heavy weight on their consciences but they will gladly carry it if it means that the generations after them won’t have to. Sabo’s cold statement here and Dragon’s sarcastic comment just a second later make that very clear. Their hands are covered in blood already. And I adore that Oda is going with this more realistic version of a war and has not just decided to put together a bunch of idealists that are destined to fail. I love how it all works as a sort of balance to Luffy and the Strawhats. The revolutionaries are older, more seasoned realists and the Strawhats, while not exactly idealists either, are more dreamers and optimists. I know I’m generalizing but I think it gets the point across well enough. And I’m in love with all of this. Good job Oda!
Tumblr media
Yeah, I can see why that might look quite incriminating… I wasn’t so happy about the revolutionaries all just believing Sabo did it so easily if it was just a headline but I understand now that we know there was an actual picture. Like: boy, I raised you since you were a child, you are my most trusted and my second in command but wtf are you doing with a dead body in your living room?!?!?
Tumblr media
Happy to see them holding their grounds on a one on one. Sure, there were handicaps and all but still! That’s no small feat! It took like a fuckton of samurais plus a dragon to do that before and Morley is just here swinging that trident around!
Tumblr media
This is gonna be bad. This is going to be very, very bad. God, I hope we are sticking to this storyline and not cutting to someone else. I NEED ANSWERS ODA! NOW!
And now that I said it, next week we are going to see fucking everyone but this. You’re all welcome.
Love the Strawhats to pieces but I am realky enjoying these last chapters without them. Distance makes the heart grow fonder, right?

let my heart out of its cage
dragon & luffy | general audiences | dragon pov | time travel | 6.1k words
Fourteen years before the first Pirate King is executed, the second Pirate King is born again. In which Luffy is a very unsubtle time-traveler and it takes Dragon longer than it should to realise his son isn't quite normal.
