The Butterfly Effect (Dustswap)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
DISCLAIMER: Flambeworm370 owns dustswap by himself anymore, and i will no longer have any involvement with it. It would be appreciated if Butterfly Effect began getting credited as Flambe’s au, and not mine, thanks The idea for Dustswap is that the main characters shown in Dusttale (which are practically Sans and Papyrus) get their "roles" swapped, which are considered "The Murderer" role, and "The Follower" roles respectively. I'm sure by now many of you might already know this, so I won't be getting into full detail about the concept, as it can be basically described as nothing more than "Dusttale but the characters get swapped primarily for the story".
The Butterfly Effect would begin with Sans, rather than letting Papyrus confront the human,  He'd try to get Papyrus to avoid them in order to prevent him from getting into possible trouble. Papyrus is stubborn, and insists on trying to talk to the human, but Sans believes it'll just end in disaster. Unable to decide, they both agree that going to a higher up may be the best option. They go to meet Undyne, but things start to become heated after Undyne completely goes against Papyrus. Papyrus wants to convince the human that they can change, believing they can do better, BE better, if they just try, while Undyne not only wants to kill the human in order to harvest their soul, but also to stop them from taking more innocent lives. Leaving Sans stuck in between of both of them. This confliction of ideas ends in a fight between the three, leading to the accidental "death" of Sans, due to Undyne shoving the blunt side of her spear up against his head in a poor attempt at getting him away from her. This "death" would end up in Papyrus snapping, believing Undyne has just killed Sans in cold blood, he'd use an attack strong enough to not only stun her, but straight up kill her (using the "letting your guard down" defense concept, in which if you aren't focused, your defense will be close to being none). Her death causes Papyrus to break out from his rage fueled state. In shock and panic Papyrus flees the scene, he runs home, to his room, and curls up in his bed hoping its all just a bad dream. At that moment Papyrus believes that, not only was Undyne's death his fault, but Sans's as well. The second thought would almost immediately be broken after Sans surprisingly enters Papyrus' bedroom, wearing his hood up. He would find his brother curled up in his blanket, still freaking out. With that, the deal between brothers would happen. Sans would not necessarily reveal to Papyrus how he was alive (the attack from Undyne made him use a "shortcut" by accident, faking the idea that he had turned to dust.) Rather, he comes to Papyrus with an idea on how to make the human change, a way to force them to stop, this idea would be for Papyrus to become strong enough in order to stun the human, because by this point Papyrus wouldn't be strong enough. The idea behind "becoming stronger" would be to kill off other monsters in order to gain EXP (Sans would have this idea after returning to the scene and discovering that Papyrus had successfully killed Undyne.) At first, Papyrus would of course deny this idea, but after some clever convincing from Sans, his brother who he trusts fully, Papyrus would reluctantly agree, walking out from his room along with his brother, still holding onto the blanket he was curled up in, believing that it would bring him some comfort and protection from the things he was about to do.
That's the beginning of the story really; an accident between Papyrus, Undyne and Sans leads to Papyrus's breakdown and Sans's head trauma.
The character of Papyrus in this AU is meant to have a bigger contrast between the start and the end compared to Sans in Dusttale, as at first, Papyrus would be almost completely reluctant to kill, and sometimes chickens out before sans forces Papyrus to kill. As his LV increases Papyrus would begin to slowly grow tougher overtime, and not care as much for their deaths he as did before, with the thought of "the human needs to change" becoming more prominent in his mind. The last stages of his insanity would show that he has become absolutely unhinged, not fearing killing anyone that Sans would command him to, and even sometimes enjoy it, there would be scenes where Papyrus would be seen audibly laughing while murdering some more important monsters. (like Mettaton for example.) His "peak unhinged" stage would only be achieved at the second phase of his fight, being the only instance where his full on blood shot eyes would be seen. So basically, Papyrus' character by default in Dustswap is an unhinged maniac, with his "brakes" being sans himself. Another detail is that Papyrus would place down traps across the entire underground, with the traps getting progressively more fatal and brutal as the story progresses, being a reflection of his growing insanity, as his puzzles that were meant to just slow down the human would turn into gruesome traps meant to "teach them a lesson".
Sans, on the other hand is much more mysterious, a character that hides himself in the shadows, slowly growing more and more insane as he and Papyrus' journey goes along due to his head trauma. (Such injury being the reason why Sans would even have such an insane idea of sacrificing innocent lives, because he wouldn't be able to think straight and rationally). Due to sans not treating his wound his trauma only grows worse and worse overtime, causing none of his magical abilities to work, or at the very least, he cannot use them without having a splitting headache (This is why sans isn't just doing the killing himself, on top of Papyrus already killing Undyne beforehand.) Some extra details about him would be that he's a stalker, a complete creep and pretty much a psychopath. He would steal frisk's belongings, stalk them across the underground,  taunt and threaten them whenever given the chance, even purposely leading the human into Papyrus' traps just so he can watch them get viciously murdered. Another detail to point out about sans is, during his later stages he would begin to grow delusional and would start to take things into his own hands, such as confronting Asgore about what He and Papyrus are doing. (Not to fight but to talk.)
A little detail would be that sans' "do you wanna have a bad time?" phrase would change into "i'm having a good time, and that's all that matters", showing confidence that Papyrus will indeed be able to beat the human and how much he enjoys seeing the human suffer.
To go briefly over some of the events that would happen within the story, there would be a scene in which Sans and Papyrus would split up; Papyrus heads for Mettaton while sans would go searching for Alphys in the true lab, which would lead to the specified events: Papyrus would have a violent fight with Mettaton, ending up with Papyrus smashing Mettaton's body into pieces, leaving nothing more than half a torso and a head, to which he would violently punch before eventually letting go, fully deactivating the robot, and thus, killing it, but he would do it all with a desperate expression on his face, showing that, at this point, the stuff he's doing is not because he has to, or he is being forced to, but it's now nothing more than pure instinct, an instinct that he cannot hold back anymore. Sans finds Alphys hidden inside the true lab and ends up having a long and heart-aching chat with her, threatening and manipulating her into thinking that, she could have stopped this, she has eyes on the entire underground and could've have prevented the human from killing anyone outside the ruins, but because she could not muster up the courage to put her foot down and help them, she was now bound to pay the price of seeing not only Hotland, but the entirety of the underground begin to succumb to the madness, with the only thing he would leave her being a suggestion for her to probably "get rid of her herself before someone else does it for her", before locking her down in the true lab, leaving her fate to be uncertain. After both of those scenes, there would later be a scene where the human meets Sans right in the spot where Mettaton's fight happens, he says nothing more than "hey, you're probably waiting for the show star to show up, right? well, sorry to bust your bolts but, but i don't think he'll be able to head in right now." before throwing Mettatons severed head onto the floor, laughing as he walks away.
Near the end of the story Papyrus meets the human in the judgement hall, Sans absent from the situation, Papyrus begins to let out a few words about the stuff he has been doing just to achieve his initial goal, to make the human change. But, while that is happening, Sans would be inside the throne room having a chat with Asgore who has locked himself in the throne room, protecting the souls from Sans. Asgore demands that Sans stops his brother, this however falls on deaf ears as Sans begins to make a deal with him, He wants Asgore to hand over the souls for him and Papyrus in exchange for leaving him alone, but Asgore knowing fully well that if he gives up the souls, the underground, maybe even the entire world is at risk, it'd game over, leaving the two to argue over this until sans turns around, before he leaves he tells Asgore that he better savor his last few moments of peace, every second counts, because whoever comes through that door, won't be there to have a nice chat.
Sans then heads back to his brother so they can have their "final fight".
After that, the fight would proceed between the skeleton brothers and the human. This would consist of 2 phases (working similar to how sans' fight would go in the original game), with the first phase involving the player having to destroy the Gauntlet of Deadly Terror before they're even able to lay a finger onto either of the skeletons, Papyrus acting somewhat reluctant with his attacks during this phase, while Sans would be using the gauntlet itself to attack the human. After the gauntlet is successfully destroyed, Sans goes into a state of pure delusion and would try to throw a last magical attack in an attempt to kill the human right then and there. (as by this point in the fight, the human would be always down to a single HP,) which causes his injury to grow so large that he suddenly drops to the floor, in exhaustion and dies. this would quickly lead to the second phase of the fight, where Papyrus would finally breakdown and completely lose it, being the first time in which Papyrus would actually show his fully blood-shot googly eyes, and the part where Papyrus would be giving it his all, not being afraid anymore to hurt you, but in fact, wanting to do it, claming that "ITS ALL YOUR FAULT, IF YOU HAD JUST LISTENED TO ME, HE WOULD BE STILL HERE!!!"
And with that, the story of The Butterfly Effect would end The result of a manipulative brother fighting against the cause behind it all An unhinged monster against a cruel human.
Fun facts about the AU and it's characters:
Despite previous claims affirming that Dustswap/The Butterfly Effect is based around a take on Dusttale called Dusttale: Renewed, Dustswap nowadays does not follow any specific Dusttale take, and would most likely fit in better as an au based around the canon universe of Dusttale, following the idea that "it happens in an universe where it's story is possible to happen"
The main reason for why sans doesn't start killing himself is because of the injury he received from Undyne, The injury makes it painful for him to use any sort of magical attacks, with things such as throwing bones or even turning a soul blue gives him a splitting headache if used.
Papyrus does not have any kind of glowing eye like sans, but instead has his LOVE/EXP be translated through his googly goofy eyes, that will progressively grow more blood-shot along the quantity of kills that papyrus gets.
Sans cannot show his glowing eye.
As stated in the ref, Sans always has a thick black shadow casted over him, that happens because sans is usually found in darker spots from the underground, and sometimes even purposefully breaks down lamps or any source of light in order to leave him in the dark, claiming that it feels "comforting to be hidden".
Sans clothes turning greenish is meant to visually represent his sickness.
Papyrus, compared to Dusttale sans, is extremely violent and sadistic, but only when he's stressed out, as when he's in a more calm state, he's seen as more of a "soulless husk" of himself than anything else.
Sans would die in all three routes, as in order for you to progress the fight, you need to pass the part where he attacks the human, and ends up killing himself.
Sans would constantly attempt to keep items out of the humans reach, such as emptying out the stores and taking weapons laying on the ground, doing it only to make your life harder to deal with the monsters that Papyrus end up missing. (There would be moments where you'd encounter Sans holding a sack full of shit he stole).
There would be several scenes where you would be able to get a glance at sans stalking Frisk, with most of them being through Papyrus' puzzles and traps, as he seemingly enjoys watching the human fail and die.
As you would be able to assume, sans resorts to threatening and manipulating when it comes to dealing with people on his own.
In here, while they don't exactly swap themselves as characters, their "roles" are swapped out from the way that both flowey and temmie act towards frisk While temmie is just a simple sales clerk like all the others, Flowey serves as some sort of companion to you, even if unnoticed, and that is more explictly shown in the genocide route, soooo, what's better than to swap their significance in the story? Here, Flowey takes the role of the sales clerk, being the only monster in the entire underground that will be able to give you anything useful for your journey, most precisely, weapons. Now, of course, it would be very weird for Flowey to suddenly want money off from Frisk, but that's not how the "weapon sale" would work around Flowey He would give you the weapons in exchange of favors rather than money, favors such as going here, going there, grabbing him something, etc. etc. Simple stuff, he would just be the one that provides you weapons. Now, temmie on the other hand, would be the only character that would be able to provide Frisk healing items, as Flowey is not able to give them those kinds of things, leaving Frisk to take onto the scaredy's temmie's offer on partnering up in exchange of some Temmie flakes
it's that easy
Both of them would not have much impact on the lore themselves, aside from the fact that, close to the ending of the story, your last encounter with Flowey would involve Frisk going to the usual place they usually meet up, only to find flowey dead on the spot
Some little fun facts about the characters:
The reason Flowey began helping you is because, after discovering what papyrus and sans were doing, he felt like it would be unfair for the skeleton brothers to be so strong when compared to Frisk, as, despite not giving half of a shit about Frisk themselves, he would enjoying watching that timeline unfold in a bit more of a "fair sense" if that makes sense
Temmie would start giving out normal temmie flakes, which give very low hp when consumed, but he would later on learn how to make better "tem flakes", that would end up working better as healing items
The only items that Flowey would be able to give would be the ones found in waterfall and hotland, as he's unable to properly get inside new home
The reason he's found dead before the ending is because he attempted at stealing the Real Knife off from new home, getting quickly intercepted by Sans in the process
Some info I never really released because I was planning on making drawings for it, but judging as i won't work on this AU any longer, its better if I directly addressed this. The AU does have endings planned for it.
There are exactly 3 endings Flambe and I have planned out. They are all based around the outcome of the final fight in the judgement hall.
The 3 endings would be as followed: The "In vain" Ending. Simply put, it's what happens when the player beats Papyrus, and continues on with their journey, not much else to say. The "Price of Victory" Ending, where Papyrus manages to kill off the player. This happens if the player dies during a specific moment in the fight, or if they choose to give up when they die, (Which would only be accessible following Sans' death.) The players death would trigger an ending cutscene, it would consist of papyrus grabbing frisk's lifeless body, and slowly carrying it in his arms as he makes his way to the throne room. The last scene would have Papyrus entering the room, and dropping frisk's corpse onto the floor, before leaving. Ending on an image of Asgores terrified expression. Tho, you would still be able to reset after that, don't worry. The "Soulless God" Ending can only be achieved if the player give the correct series of responses when questioned by Sans during his encounters. This leads to him thinking more on the idea of getting ahold of the souls in a last ditch effort to overpower the player. This causes Sans' dialogue to change before he succumbing to his injuries, ranting about the human souls Asgore is holding, inadvertently letting Papyrus know of where they are located. This ends the fight with Papyrus stunning the player, rather than killing them, before he flees the scene, managing to get ahold of the souls from Asgore, implying Papyrus had to brutally kill him before doing so. After absorbing them, the situation goes terribly wrong as Papyrus would not be able to contain all the power of the souls, along with the LV he has accumulated. He would become a god with all the power but none of the control, and would lead him unintentionally removing the human as a whole.
On a side note, the Soulless God ending is the true ending of Butterfly Effect, having a different outcome than the others if it were to be achieved in a legitimate game. If achieved, the game would close itself after the humans supposed deletion, changing the icon of the game, and leaving the launcher nameless as, if the player open the game again, they'd be met with a still image of Papyrus distorted face staring back at them. You would not be able to reset, leading to the game permanently being softlocked.
