i so badly want one of those fic examinations of steve's relationship with joyce and hopper but solely through eddie's pov like hear me out

steve and eddie chat a lot in the upside down (and later in the hospital, when they learn hop is alive). steve has taken charge of filling eddie in on the rest of their of-age crew without the kids butting in. he never mentions his own parents, but he talks about the rest of the party's a lot, especially joyce and hopper. eddie knows what it's like to desperately want someone to be your parent and trying to hide it from his own childhood, when he would try to be cool about wayne dropping him off at his dad's house. steve obviously adores joyce and hopper, thinks the world of them and legitimately looks up to them.

eddie isn't sure what he expects from a cop who came back to life and the world's most determined housewife, but he's excited to meet them as someone steve loves.

cue eddie's horror when he realizes that neither of them really feel much for steve rather than annoyance and vague distrust. that joyce trusts will with eddie, an accused murderer, in a heartbeat and still hesitates to leave him with steve. that hopper brushes off every ounce of steve's hero worship and joy.

he tries to broach the topic with steve, gently, and is heartbroken when steve genuinely has no idea what he's talking about. and not because he's oblivious, but because steve thinks that's what he deserves. he thinks that's the parental love that someone who was an asshole in high school needs, because that's what would make him a good person. he needs people to call him out constantly, obviously, because why else would they keep doing it? why would nancy? at least they're here. at least they're not ignoring him. at least they're not forcing him into a box. they just want him to be better.

like, this is the man who thanked a girl for calling him bullshit and telling him she never loved him. he doesn't Know that's not how you're supposed to handle things. no one ever taught him that.

and now eddie's gotta figure out how he can teach steve how to be loved the right way without outing himself and his huge crush on his love-starved dork of a friend.

Eddie doesn’t understand football but whenever he gets stuck watching it, he chooses which team to cheer for by which team colors are better.

This pisses Uncle Wayne and Steve off every time because Eddie’s “favorites” are never their teams. It doesn’t help that Eddie starts buying team merch in those colors too and wearing them whenever he can.

(Who can fault Eddie though? That Raiders jacket is the most comfortable one he owns and it just so happens to be in his colors. So of course he’s going to cheer on the Vegas boys when they get a basket or whatever!)

i was reading a scoops era steddie au where eddie visits scoops often and one thing i noticed i alway want but have yet to see (bear in mind my fic pallette is basically just shit i see on Tumblr and occasionally reading every fic a certain author has written) is a specific scene of eddie noticing stobins missing when he goes to visit them at scoops the day theyre stuck in the bunker. cause they entered the bunker after a shift one night and didn't get out until at the soonest the next afternoon right before the mall closes so if either or both of them were scheduled to work then they'd be just... gone.

and how characters around them handle that depends on how soon (if at all) they're declared missing. did robin think they'd be in-and-out in their snooping and tell her parents shes be back a little late or did she think they'd be out kinda late fucking around and just lied to her parents telling them shes sleeping over at a friend's like how we know tina was going to cover for erica? did mrs Henderson freak out when Dustin didn't bike back home (knowing what happened with will) or did she know he was with steve and trusted that they were goofing off or something?

and usually i see Steve's parents not being home but what if they were?? they could panic because steve always has some sort of excuse for why hes gone or maybe just his mom starts worrying because while his dad never really asks about him she does and she knows hes probably not at some girls house right now because he at least would have told her. or maybe mrs harrington doesn't know her son as well as she thinks she does and assumes he is out at some girls house and is relieved hes finally getting to be more like himself.

maybe just one or two people in scoops troop are reported missing that night and maybe the search started for them is enough for the other's parents or friends to realize they're all missing. maybe none of them are because they each already had a coverup with the people who'd notice. maybe they spent a good few hours in that elevator regretting lying about where they'd be because now no one knows they're in danger and by the time they start looking it could be too late (obviously erica didn't seem to grasp this yet but shes literally 10 and it's definitely her fist severely traumatic life or death experience. for the others tho it could definitely be on their minds and i have seen a few fics where robin wonders about how steve and Dustin are reacting like they've done scary shit like this before together)

then morning comes and id give it until lunch with no calls or anything before parents who believed their kids were sleeping over to start worrying seriously. maybe they call the friend their child's supposedly with and get a confused parent saying they haven't seen them or maybe they get the friend picking up and confirming they're fine (like tina). but if Mrs Henderson gets worried and calls steve she'll either get the harringtons saying he isn't home right now or she won't be able to reach him. and knowing steves like a big brother and a best friend to dustin knows that if steve missing too he's probably at least missing with him and goes to the station worried about them both

and then theres the fact that scoops has to open in the morning, probably sometime around 10am. maybe steve and robin were scheduled to both work again and as 10am comes and passes scoops ahoy hasn't been touched. maybe some mall manager calls the scoops manager (forgive me ive never worked in a mall but i do work in a store-within-a-store and we have our own manager plus the big store manager) and asks where their employees are. if missing persons reports were filed that last night then the manager would be really worried while frantically trying to find someone to cover for them. but maybe no one knows they're missing yet and their manager is grumbling about their no-shows, maybe considering firing them for both disappearing without even calling out. depending on how much they know and if the reports were filed, whoever has to cover their shifts is either worried about their coworkers (probably moreso robin than steve because of his reputation) or utterly pissed that they both didn't show and they have to open scoops ahoy with a few hours delay and probably a good few karens bitching about being closed. or maybe one or the other was scheduled and while their no-show is really inconvenient at least someone's there to open and ask for backup

and then theres steves car still parked in the back where it was the day before. a bike left behind at the mall is less eyebrow-raising but a fancy car? Steve Harrington's car? Steve Harrington who was scheduled to work today but somehow isn't in scoops right now? is he skipping work while simultaneously wandering around his workplace? and whats worse is despite evidence being there *no one can find him*. maybe thats what it takes for people to realize hes like actually missing. maybe they think he was kidnapped, hopefully he just went home with some girl and lost track of time.

and then theres eddie. eddie whos been stopping by scoops for a while now. maybe he still doesn't really like Harrington but likes teasing him with Buckley or maybe they've gotten pretty close. maybe they're already dating. maybe eddie walks up to scoops one morning to find it closed or to find that one or the other didn't show up for work this morning. maybe he hears from the worker that ones missing or maybe they get a rant about how pissed the worker is to be opening alone. maybe he's the one to go to a mall manager or security officer worried about scoops being closed because he *knows* the people that are supposed to be there right now and they don't just abandon work at the same time with no explanations.

or maybe eddie visits in the afternoons and learns they're missing from their coworkers or maybe hes there because he saw it on the news and went on his our hunt. either way it'd probably end with Eddie looking around the mall for them because he knows steve isn't going to just abandon his beemer in a busy public parking lot. maybe he finds them high out of their minds while checking the movie theatre (this one i do see a lot and am obsessed with its so good) or maybe he doesn't find them at all (its a big mall and they are actively hiding from Russians who know they escaped. sure stobin are not being very secretive while high but dustin and erica are at least keeping them in less-discoverable locations). maybe he goes home knowing hes looked everywhere in that damn mall and assumes they're probably kidnapped and taken somewhere else (if he did find them tho that opens a whole can of worms for if, how, and how much eddie gets involved and while my brains gone down sone of those rabbit holes i don't think i will today)

and then they see the news about the mall fire. and eddie knows damn well that he looked everywhere in that mall but didn't see a trace of his friends but there they are on the news and apparently in the fire. maybe eddie assumes he didn't look hard enough. but maybe he sees how steves the only one with more than a few bruises on his legs, how despite them claiming he was trapped in rumble that also allegedly killed billy hargrove he looks like hes carrying himself on adrenaline alone and hovering around robin and the kids like something more than falling support beams could get to them. maybe its the fact that he look as shit as he did but wasn't laying down on a hospital stretcher like he would be if he just got those wounds.

also i swear i feel like doctor strange looking through every possible reality when i go on tangents like this. idk whenever i come up with little fics in my head or come up with different ways my favorite unfinished fics could end im always exploring as many different versions of the same scenario as i can and coming up with as many what-ifs as i can.

Another bit from my Steddie fix-it, Holding Out For a Hero. (ETA: new name - I'd Fall For You Twice)

(After one of them - probably Eddie - wakes up from a nightmare.)

"I don't know how you do it, man." Eddie's voice is muffled from where he has his face pressed to his knees.

"Do what?" Steve asks. He scoots a little further onto the bed, tucks Eddie closer to his side.

"Deal with it. With all that Upside Down shit. I mean, you've been fighting monsters since, what, '83? It's just been a few weeks for me and I'm scared as hell. I'm terrified he's gonna come back for me or Max, try to finish us off. Or that he'll try to take out one of the kids. Or Nancy or Rob or you," he whispers, his voice strained and halfway to a sob.

There's an almost imperceptible pause in the way Steve is running his hand comfortingly up and down Eddie's arm. But he doesn’t say anything and Eddie thinks maybe he doesn't want to get into all this feelings shit.

But then, "Me, too," Steve whispers back, almost inaudible. "I think I've been afraid ever since that night in the Byers house."

Eddie peeks over his knees, tears clinging to the edges of his eyelashes, and side-eyes Steve. "You? Steve Harrington. Scared?"

Steve glances over and nods. Swallows. "Yeah. Me, Steve Harrington. Terrified. After that first time -" he sighs. "I just wanted to pretend it never happened. You can ask Nancy, it's why everything between her and me went to hell. But then it happened again. And again. And now it's happened again and I don't know if it's ever going to stop happening."

His breathing quickens with his rambling words, his arm tightening around Eddie's back. Moving one of his arms from where it's clasped tightly around his knees, Eddie lays his hand comfortingly over Steve's where it rests on his shoulder. Feels Steve tangle their fingers together and waits for his breathing to even out.

"Like I said - you've had all this shit for years. And yet, you just keep fighting. How do you do it?"

Steve tilts his head over to rest it against Eddie's. "I really don't know. I just - do. I mean, what'll happen if I don't? That hellhole will try to invade our world again and I won't be there to help stop it. So I guess I just…" He pauses, thinking, and Eddie waits, relaxes into the feel of Steve pressed close to his side, of their hands wrapped around each other.

"I guess I just do what I can," he continues. "I take the gremlins to the arcade and I drive Robin to school and I give Dustin stupid advice about girls and I make sure there's a box of granola bars in my car for when Max 'forgets' to eat breakfast and I always restock the first aid kit at work and I learn CPR just in case someone stops breathing the next time we have to fight. Because at least then, I'm being useful. At least then -" He stops, just closes his eyes and breathes for a moment, as if he can't quite bring himself to say the next words. "At least then, I'm not bullshit," he whispers and it sounds like a wound.

Eddie squeezes Steve's fingers, trying to soothe the bitter tone in his voice that he doesn't quite understand. "So… you take care of everyone else," he says and it isn't a question.

Steve huffs out a breath. "Yeah, I guess I do. It's about the only thing I can do."

Eddie is quiet for a long moment. He doesn’t agree with that, but that’s really a conversation for another day. "Who takes care of you?" he finally asks.

Steve blinks. "What?"

"You take care of everyone else. But who takes care of you?"

Now it's Steve's turn to be quiet. "I don't - I mean - I don’t need - “ Steve shakes his head, clears his throat. “Robin. I’ve got Robin, you know. To talk to. She’s great.”

Eddie smiles softly. “And thank god for Buckley. I’m glad she’s there for you - when you let her be.”

Steve looks away, but Eddie keeps pressing. “Have you told her you’re still spending every night in a hospital chair? That all you’ve been eating is those granola bars you keep in your car? That you haven’t heard from your parents since before spring break?” Steve shoots him a look and Eddie just raises his eyebrows. “I’m convalescent, not stupid. You think I haven’t noticed?”

He doesn’t get an answer.

“How can she take care of you, like, really take care of you, if you haven’t told her any of that?”

Steve sighs, rubs at his forehead. “Eddie, it's not anyone else's job to do that. To take care of me."

"And yet you've made it your job to take care of all of them - well, all of us, I should say." He squeezes Steve's hand again. "So how come you won’t let anyone take care of you?"

Steve sighs. "It's not - it's not like that. I can take care of myself, no one else needs to worry about me."

"Sleeping for nights on end in that back-breaking chair is what you call taking care of yourself?" Eddie says with a wry twist to his mouth.

Steve is quiet for so long, Eddie thinks he's not going to answer. But finally, "I don't want to be a bother," he answers softly.

"Steve Harrington, you are many things. But a bother is not one of them," Eddie declares. He can’t help but think how, if someone had told him even two months ago that he would one day be assuring King Steve that he is in no way, shape, or form an annoyance, he would have laughed in their face. But now? "Scooch in and get comfortable and let someone - let me - take care of you for once," he insists, trying to tug Steve to lay down next to him. "I'm not letting you fall asleep in that damn chair again, not when there's plenty of room right here. And tomorrow, you are getting a real breakfast before you go to work.”

Steve resists for a few moments. “Eddie, c’mon, you don’t have to - you need your rest, I’ll be fine.”

But then he makes the mistake of looking down and Eddie is peering up at him from under his lashes, big doe-eyes pleading, and Steve lets himself be pulled down. He shifts, careful of the spots on Eddie’s body he knows will sometimes flare with pain, but stays close, his arm still around the other boy’s shoulders.

Eddie settles closer, pulls the blanket up over both of them. Their eyes meet and Steve feels something stutter in his chest, has to close his eyes against that gaze that he knows now sees him far too clearly. He feels Eddie relax against him, feels his breathing slow, starts running his fingers through Eddie’s curls, trying to ease him back toward sleep.

Nuzzling his face into Steve’s neck, Eddie sighs out, “Maybe now we can both get some sleep, yeah, Stevie?”

Steve smiles tiredly. “Yeah, Eds.”

He feels one of Eddie’s hands gently tuck some hair behind his ear, stroke softly down to rest on his cheek. “Shhhhhhh,” Eddie whispers.

“Mmkay.” Steve mumbles, as the rhythm of Eddie’s breathing - safe and steady and oh-so-alive - finally lulls him to sleep.

just want to say this is an impressive work of mug scholarship

and that I'm probably not qualified to write it but I hope there's a story where Steve visits the trailer during a peaceful time and is like... why do you guys have all those mismatched mugs hanging up on the wall (because at his house everything matches or it's Out) and Eddie is like EXCUSE YOU every one of those mugs has a Significance and a Story attached to it, this is a family history, and proceeds to relate the story for any mug Steve points out (with gestures, character voices and sound effects)

to the end of his days Steve isn't sure whether those were real pre-existing stories or Eddie was making them up on the spot because he's good at improvising but either way it was enjoyable to listen to his tales

maybe at some point when he's pretty much a fixture there Steve brings in a mug he chose and diffidently asks if there could be room for one for the story of how he and Eddie met.

Eddie (banging a nail into the wall): there is now

I'm supposed to be working on a 6 pages essay that's due Monday, that I only have the thesis statement written for. but instead, I'm writing a response to a ask I got about Untuned Piano Nancy. And I do not think the person who asked me it was aware of the can of worms that they where opening when they asked it. Because I pulled up receipts. I'm pulling quotes, explaining the thoughts process and the reason that Steve is doing these things and why Nancy doesn't understand them And I do not think, this is what they meant for me to do when they asked the question. But it's too late to go back. I'm basically writing an essay about why I don't like Nancy Wheeler all that much. And I'm, I'm kind of sorry?

ok so ive been trying to think of modern music that eddie would like and. MANESKIN. Eddie would love maneskin

i mean, they're very anti conformity, they actually use real instruments, not to mention he'd be sooo in love with damiano, they write songs about being unique and different, as well as songs that are fucking kinky as hell.

i can also totally see eddie dragging steve to a maneskin show and steve getting really into it because eddie likes it and he loves seeing eddie get excited about music.

do u have any particular sexuality thoughts abt eddie the way you do abt steve?

not really at least in the same way? i don't think!! :0 w steve we have a lot of basis to go off of bc we get 4 seasons of specific characterisation expressly to do with how he interacts with romance + girls + his own reputation thereupon so it's really fun to extract stuff from that but with eddie he's sort of more of a blank slate but also funnily, in comparison, we do get a LOT of character building back story and development even through implication that makes it a different kind of interesting thing to gather stuff from 🤔 it's also funny that we know way more about eddie's home life than robin OR steve's LOL literally just funny...

i think it's fun that the gay hc is so popular with eddie and i get it he is a little gayboy tbh and i also think it ties in significantly with how... you can tell from extrapolation and just basic like, relation that eddie is this guy who was outcast by society BEFORE he developed his own counterculture against it and the way he wears his specific type of anti authoritarian anti mainstream bubble wrap is in line i think with some sort of intrinsic part of him, and others, that he may feel he needs to protect and defend against. a not insignificant part of a lot of actual counterculture is being against the bigotry and oppression that goes hand in hand with society at large and, fundamentally, the loudest voices against oppression and the leading forefront will always be and SHOULD always be the victim and survivors of it, and a gay metalhead with a punk rock attitude in the 80s is the easiest thing in the world to imagine. i think we as like lgbt people and anyone else who has a certain hand in... allyship can pick up on this really easily with eddie and see ourselves in that part of him that feels different than the same vein social ostracisation like, dustin and mike go through, even if on the surface it appears similar.

so yeah basically i think he's literally gay. i don't know if the quote unquote gay CODING was intentional and i'm going to go with a definitive Not but i will enjoy the spoils nonetheless. i also think it's significant that a lot of the real life inspiration for eddie specifically WERE gay kids and probably that is where this unintentional coding springs from... the hunt the freak line is a very important one to me as well for this specifically with that it's him and robin, a canonical gay woman, meeting him on his level without skipping a beat. this is also where i disagree that obviously his death was not "bury your gays" because anything picked up on was not something that was figuratively put down 😭😭 the duffers did not have EDDIE circled on a whiteboard with 💯 GAY -> pointed to it we literally just think he's gay.

also just bc i kind of side stepped the sexuality hc itself unintentionally HEH i think he could also be bi sure and all this remain true!!! though i don't think he had any feelings for chrissy (and to me reading that scene as him having a crush on her comes off... different. soz.) potential age gap notwithstanding. i think bi eddie could be fun and also hilarious bc it means he had even more of a quote unquote chance and still erm. committed virgin sacrifice </3 i do agree with the like general consensus of him being bi feels different if only because erm... there is a lack of actual evidence that he is inclined one way or the other and being assumptive of his supposed attraction to women in order to undercut the gayness is like a very classic homophobic. thing. and also weirdos ruin it

if eddie is bisexual i think it is purely in theory for him as well as us (lol) and he would probably be SO annoying stoner-esque "why limit your love to just one half of the population mannn" type about it despite never getting any bc he's scared of girls in a gayboy way. also i do not see truly any part of him being some sort of behind the scenes suave seductor of women DESPITE what the horny minded may or may not think... he is not looming over any girl being some sort of manic pixie edward cullen reject he goes home and neurodiversely plays the same chord over and over again on his guitar then passes out wearing jeans he is literally a wet eyed loser not a wattpad BAD BOY.
