the systematic cruelty with which schools treat pupils with sm needs to be exposed and stopped. it is traumatising and it makes things so much worse. i don’t care what a teacher’s intentions are, if they make a pupil feel unsafe just to ‘get them out of their comfort zone’ they are a bad person and should not be in education. 🌹🌹

I loathe loathe loathe the acronym STEAM (as in "science, technology, engineering, arts and math"). My reaction is perhaps outsized to its awfulness, but I feel it encapsulates so much of what is wrong with education policy today, and the mindlessness of jargon.
"Oh I guess people say art is important too, let's show that by squeezing it into the important money making disciplines. It's just the same really. Let's not investigate why we're assuming art will only count if we shove it in with the tech stuff. Social sciences? Humanities? History? Never heard of her. We're making one acronym to rule them all hahaha. Everything you need to know is covered by it. Shh. Don't think too hard."
And I say this as someone who likes science and is currently taking a fuck ton of science classes.

Despite staged optics, Houston setting up uncertainty for Nova Scotia schools.
A few weeks ago, the Nova Scotia government issued a new funding announcement for school construction as part of its new fiscal plan. $208.5 million, in fact. The announcement was pushed out via the government’s various social media platforms, and was accompanied by an image of a smiling Tim Houston, MLA Brad Johns, and a seemingly quite-pleased-to-hear-about-the-funding-announcement…

There is a clear north-south divide in education: children who live in the north of England are more likely to live in poverty and be absent from school, both of which are correlated with lower educational achievement. This is according to a recent report published in 2021 called ‘Child of the North‘. Child of the North: Key Findings 27% of children who live in the North of England live in…

how education fails people with situational mutism
“people with selective mutism can spend years without talking at school or even with people they trust. This can further take an emotional toll on these individuals who spend years in silence with no support or understanding from anyone, devastating their self-confidence and well-being and destroying the trust that future educators will meet their needs.” this is a big one. i spent years not speaking at school, and overtime i communicated less and less there, because no-one recognised my anxiety and my needs.
just because a person’s face is blank, doesn’t mean they aren’t anxious and struggling. just because they appear defiant or like they don’t care, doesn’t mean they should be treated as such. we are not your typical ‘quiet kid’, even the toughest looking person there is could have sm.
my school’s SENCo (special educational needs coordinator) called me ‘quiet’. she couldn’t recognise that i spent years not only not speaking, but also being frozen with fear, unable to move, literally biting my tongue when class got funny because i was so scared to laugh or even smile.
she couldn’t see that i was alone all the time and that i was terrified of school and my classmates. schools operate on a basis where they only provide support if parents raise an issue, or if the pupil raises one. people with sm, often their parents don’t know, and they themselves get anxious about reaching out for help. they are ignored and ‘slip through the system’.
the huge problem is that sm can be triggered. a change in environment such as moving to new school or workplace, can cause the onset of sm. when i entered secondary school, the very first day on the bus on the way there, was the first time in my life i truly felt i couldn’t speak. it terrified and confused me. this sudden onset is a problem because people in that environment: teachers, peers, coworkers, all come to believe that you are ‘always’ or ‘naturally’this way and that the specific environment is not the problem, or in fact that you yourself are not facing a problem. i was ‘Quiet’ in school since the start, so people didn’t treat it as the problem it was.

The New Education Policy
NEP 2023 is a comprehensive reform of India's education system. It was launched in 2020 and is the first major reform of the country's education system in 34 years. The NEP aims to make education more accessible, equitable, and inclusive. It also aims to develop students' critical thinking skills and creativity. The NEP 2023 is a bold and ambitious reform of India's education system. It has the potential to transform the way that education is delivered in India. However, it is important to note that the NEP 2023 is just a policy document. It will take time and effort to implement the NEP 2023 and to achieve its goals.

Celebrating Educator Experiences: The Role of Anecdata and Case Studies in Understanding Teaching
What the heck is “anecdata”? Last week, while tuning into a podcast featuring Dr. Andrew Huberman, a renowned neuroscientist with a vast online following, and Tim Ferriss, famous for his self-experimentation and books like “The Four Hour Workweek,” I stumbled upon an intriguing term: “anecdata“. This blend of ‘anecdote’ and ‘data’ was used repeatedly to describe the evidence underpinning their…
