"Issue #30: Time Is a Circle"

...that's why clocks are round!

The story that Cypressfoot talks about in this issue is a reference to Issue 2, where she doesn't get very far into it except saying RoseClan's name for the first time. What she does end up telling is an expanded version of Nightberry's story from Issue 7, with more details and specific character names. And yes, it does indeed confirm that Longest-Claws and an early form of his predator gang were the ones who destroyed the original lost Clans.

In the first panel on the 3rd page, I included a couple cameos of other comicker's characters. They belong to thegreatmaddu, Giogeth, Songdogx, and StarrySwirly.

If you aren't familiar with the seasonal antler cycle and are very confused by why Deepdark is covered in blood goop, he's in the process of shedding! During the summer months, while deer grow their antlers, they're covered with a fuzzy substance called velvet. This fuzz is in fact full of veins and tissue, so in mid-fall when the antlers begin to shed, they can appear very bloody as the velvet falls off, leaving those familiar, calcified pointy antlers behind.

Next issue is a big one.

The Beggining.

"GO!" Posystar hisses at his Clan, not noticing the three apprentices and kit they were leaving behind as the surviving other cats raced away.

The pale tabby she-cat huddled around the two younger toms, and watched as the other cats scampered away, her whole body quivering. The kit started whimpering and trembling as it started to rain.

"It's okay Egretkit... They're coming back..." Beechpaw mews at the tom kit, but she wasn't so sure.

The brown and white tabby tom glared at her. "They're not coming back!" He hissed, his fur bristling at the lie that Beechpaw just meowed.

"Oh StarClan! Tumblepaw, she's just trying to help make Egretkit feel better!" The other she-cat - Bigpaw - hisses.

Their meows are hushed as breathing and scuffling started becoming louder, and louder.

"BIGPAW!" Tumblepaw meows as Bigpaw started being pulled away.

Egretkit wails as Tumblepaw and Beechpaw started to pull Bigpaw, but she slipped out of their grasp and she is pulled to the center of camp, and vanishes outside of camp, like every one else. Tumblepaw starts tearing up, and started running clumsily to where Bigpaw was pulled to, splashing through the small pools in the center of camp. He felt a tug on his tail and was pulled back to where he was hiding before.

"She's gone." Beechpaw meows as her ears twitched, gazing into the rocky forest that Bigpaw had been pulled into, the smears of blood making her look away.

"I guess we could go join a different Clan?" Egretkit mews, his small body trembling as Beechpaw started grooming his soaked fur.

"We can't - Posystar would have wanted us to re-start this Clan."

"Well then... let's do it!"

Had to share this moment from my Clangen save because it was too perfect not too (yes, I'm playing on the web version because I can't figure out how to download it, shhh)

Batstripe joined the clan as a loner with her kits: Bubblingkit, Egretkit, and Droughtkit. There was already another queen (Lynxpelt, one of my original cats) with a single kit the same age, Rubblekit. Lynxpelt and Bubblingkit both died the next moon.

I was headcanoning Batstripe raising Rubblekit, and so I thought it was funny when I saw this in Egretkit's relationships:

This is the only time I've ever seen the jealousy bar, and the best part is that Rubblekit doesn't even have a relationship with her.

Egretkit both hating and being jealous of him while Rubblekit couldn't care less about her is perfect reluctant adopted siblings energy and I love it.

Story: 

Anyone who knew Pigeonfang would tell you that he was a lover, not a fighter.

Even as a kit and an apprentice, he was more preoccupied with finding "the one" than becoming the best warrior ever. Other cats whispered that it was the result of his parents' influence--as the only kit of the leader and medicine cat of Riverclan, they were bound to place bad ideas in his head. But Pigeonfang didn't care--that's just how he was.

It wasn't a surprise to anyone when Pigeonfang fell in love with a loner named Katniss, who had taken refuge in Riverclan to heal after losing her tail to a monster, and left the Clan to live as a loner with her. 

He missed his parents, but he was much happier as a loner, wandering freely with the love of his life at his side. Not much time had passed before Katniss became pregnant, and soon she had given birth to six wonderful kits, who Pigeonfang adored with every fiber of his being. 

He gave them Clan names. Grousekit, Magpiekit, Buzzardkit, Starlingkit, Egretkit, and Swankit, so they would always have a piece of their Clan heritage with them.

The next few moons of Pigeonfang's life were the happiest he had ever been. But then Leaf-bare came around, and the blizzard hit. Snow blanketed the ground as far as the eye could see, and the chill seeped into the stone of their cave home. But he had to at least try and hunt. Otherwise his precious kits would starve!

The hunt was long and arduous, but Pigeonfang was eventually able to catch a squirrel, which would at least be enough to feed the kits. By the time he had gotten back to the den, night had long since fallen, his bones were aching, and he was just so tired. 

He set the squirrel down and immediately flopped down to sleep. 

He could have sworn he heard a crunching noise, but he was so tired, he decided not to deal with it until the morning. That was exactly what happened when, come sunrise. a shriek of horror echoed in his ears, and he looked up to see Katniss staring at him in horror and Grousekit hiding behind his mother's legs, staring in confusion.

Pigeonfang mumbled sleepily, asking Katniss what the big deal was. But as his body shifted, he heard a strange noise. Like crunching leaves, but not quite. He stood up and looked down, and his world immediately shattered. 

The bodies of the rest of his kits were lying in a crumpled pile, fur matted with blood. Immediately the dots connected. Pigeonfang tried to tell Katniss that it was an accident, but she wouldn't believe him, and honestly, Pigeonfang knew in his heart that she was right. 

With one last hiss to stay away from Grousekit, she grabbed Pigeonfang's last precious kit by the scruff of his neck and whirled away into the snow. Pigeonfang chased after them, crying out for Katniss to stop, but he lost sight of them almost immediately.

That didn't stop him from trying to find Grousekit again, though. He kept on searching, and searching, and searching, but he never could. The older he got, the more determined he became, neglected to groom himself or even eat. He became skinnier and skinnier, but still he persisted.

Finally, many moons later, the scent he had been searching for for so long finally reached him. But it was intermingled with other scents too. Pigeonfang tried to leap at the rogues, but his muscles, weak from a lack of nutrients, buckled beneath him. 

All he could do was stare in horror as he watched the rogues leap at his last surviving kit's throat, and the death would be all his fault again... 

But then two more cats leaped out, Shadowcan cats, one reddish-brown and one golden, and they drove back the rogues without effort.

Pigeonfang watched as Grouse talked to the ShadowClan cats--Myrtlewing and Aldereyes--and listened to Grouse agree to join Shadowclan. As he watched the trio walk away, he let his body go limp and smiled. His son would be with the Clans now, safe and sound. As long as his son was safe, he could die happily. 

And die happily he did.

--Yes, Grousemane's siblings all having bird prefixes was intentional! The whole family has a bird theme, with Katniss being named after Katniss Everdeen, who has her own bird symbolism :3.

--Grousemane wasn't with his siblings that fateful night because he had a nightmare and went to his mom for comfort. Had he not had that nightmare or woken up a few minutes later, he would be dead.

--The kits were probably all around two moons old when they died and Katniss and Grouse left Pigeonfang, so Grousemane probably forgot about Pigeonfang over time.

--Had the rest of the kits survived, [Star] thinks they all would have become Clan cats, with Buzzardkit and Starlingkit joining Grousemane in ShadowClan, Magpiekit going to either ThunderClan or SkyClan, and Egretkit and Swankit reuniting their grandparents in RiverClan. Their warrior names would have been Buzzardblaze, Starlingstrike, Magpieshade, Egretfeather, and Swanstream :3

Mistshard returned to camp with a newborn she-kit named Birchkit. He’d found her while gathering herbs.

A rogue brings her kit named Ice to the Clan, stating she can no longer care for her.

Sapstorm died from dehydration and heat stroke.

After wandering out into the territory, Rosepelt was later found dead. The Clan mourns her.

Pinepeak and Jayshade had an affair, giving birth to a single kitten they name her Owlkit.

Pearlight brought a litter of 2 kits back to camp. She says she found them abandoned, possibly by a rogue or kittypet. She names them Turtlekit and Troutkit.

Robinchaser and Bumblebuzz return to camp with a litter of 2 kits. They name them Cedarkit and Thistlekit.

Foxpaw, Erminepaw, and Apricotpaw are apprenticed to Salmontail, Bluebloosom, and Gulltail.

Cliffleaf has decided to use her skills to become the Clan’s newest mediator.

Flamedance happily retires to the elders’ den.

Although excited to become an apprentice, it takes Birchkit a lot of coaxing from Mistshard before she’s able to touch noses with her new mentor Oatmeadow.

I'm glad I was finally able to call back to Issue 8, and see where Daffodilpaw has been mentally since then. As with all our apprentices, she's done some growth since then, and Slugpelt's conversation with her kids in Issue 18 affected her deeply. A concept I think is interesting but not explored enough is when someone is fully aware they have a problem, or could possibly fall into something bad, but still know they might be unable to resist it. That's what Daff is dealing with.

We've also got a follow-up on Mallowstar's discussion with Cootstorm in Issue 6. Seems like he's gotten more steadfast in his plans since then! Blacknose is a big influence on him, since she's a stone-cold badass. She doesn't take shit from anybody.

I always love drawing the BlackMallow kittens. That's a given. It was briefly mentioned in Issue 25, but Cormorantpaw loves kids, and he's great with them. He treats them with the kindness he wishes he'd been given.

Personality: Egretstep was always mysterious and elegant. She enjoyed having an air of mystery around her and was almost always calm and collected. Egretstep doesn't like her Clanmates much, but she tolerates them. She’s always been curious about life outside the Clans and plans on finding out what it’s like someday soon.

Backstory: Egretkit was the middle kit in a litter of three. She was always quiet, sticking with her brother and ignoring her sister. But when she became Egretpaw, she became more and more distant from her Clan. She met a rogue molly named Cloud who lived across the Thunderpath and she went to visit Cloud often. Cloud had a son named Pepper who was Egretpaw’s age. Egretpaw became Egretstep for the elegant way she walked. Egretstep went to meet up with Cloud again, only to learn that Cloud had died. She and Pepper became closer and closer, and eventually, the two confessed their love for each other. Two moons later, Egretstep had a single kit, a little gray and white tom she named Cloudkit. She is still refusing to name the father.

Name Rules Part 1

All Clan names have a prefix and a suffix. In this post, I will cover the rules of prefixes in this verse. Rule 1: The prefix must be something the cats are aware of. If they don't know what it is, they can't use it as a prefix. Rule 2: The prefix must describe dominant fur colour. The prefix must be obvious and specific. The only exception to this rule are Name Change names, which will have a separate post of their own. So this means no naming a pure white Kit Stormkit because they were born during a storm. That white Kit must be named something like Snowkit or Frostkit or Egretkit. This also means no Echokit to describe that the Kit is an 'echo' of some other cat. The prefix has to obviously describe the colour of the cat in question, and it has to be specific enough that even someone from another Clan can guess at the colour accurately. For this reason, no Featherkit or Birdkit. Use the specific bird instead. Rule 3: Each prefix may only be in use by one cat in a particular Clan. So let's say a Queen named Redfur has a litter of Kits, and one of them is red. Let's also say the Deputy of her Clan is Firefur. There is no cat in her Clan with the prefix Russet-, but the Leader of a neighbouring Clan is Russetstar. She can't name her red Kit Firekit because Firefur is still alive. She can name the Kit Russetkit, since Russetstar is in another Clan and there's no Russet- alive in her Clan at the moment. Now if a red Kit is born after Firefur dies, Firekit becomes an option, but there can only be one cat in the Clan with the prefix. Again, Name Change names have an exception that will be detailed in their post. Rule 4: No derogatory or morbid names. That means no Dirtkit (because dirt is used as a euphemism for cat waste), no Bloodkit (because that's morbid)... This also means no giving Name Change names to Kits, even if you get a Kit who is born, perhaps, without a tail. This is because Kits are still young, and they may not easily understand why Name Change names are honours and not punishments. It also involves consent; Name Change names must be consented to, and Kits are not old enough to consent.
